Sony's TCM-200DV cassette recorder offers a multitude of features which make it an excellent choice for a cassette voice recorder. The two channel, one track recorder promises accurate recording. An essential playback feature is the playback speed control. With this adjustment, you can adjust the speed between thirty percent of normal and negative fifteen percent of normal. This is a great tool for those transferring interviews or lectures. If you find yourself fighting to hear the cassette player via the built-in speaker, plug earphones into the recorder and your troubles will be lessened. In fact, Sony has installed a L/R monaural earphone jack for clear and unobstructed hearing.

There are two options in powering this recorder. The first is an optional AC adaptor. If batteries are more useful, use the required two AA batteries; these batteries will run for up to twenty-five hours. With the LED battery level indicator you can be watchful of remaining battery time. With automatic shut-off, you can be assured that you will not be wasting batteries needlessly.

i'm a 17 year old filipino student writer/filmmaker and when an idea pop into my mind, im always armed with a pen and paper to write my ideas and to review it later. there were also times when pen and paper are not appropriate, while in the bath, while sitting at the toilet, while walking, etc. so I decided to buy a voice recorder to record my ideas everywhere and anytime. I'm considering a digital voice recorder but it is out of my budget. microcassettes however are good and small in size but it cant be played in ordinary cassette players. i originally bought a cheap 375 pesos or about $6 Platinum cassette recorder but the microphone is so bad so i needed a replacement. im considering an aiwa model with Voice activated recording, 2x recording time and a tape counter for about 34 dollars but because of sony's clear voice recording, i got this tcm-200dv tape recorder for 36 dollars. i really love the cool features such as 2x recording time, speed control VOR or Voice activated Recording, Clear Voice system which filters sound to make it more audible and its design. the microphone in the aiwa model is positioned in the hood of the recorder which is very bad because you cant direct the microphone to the sound source you want; sony however, positioned it excellently in the body facing up so you can direct it easily to the sound source. the VOR also is nice but it needs a litte practice to use and is so sensitive. the only thing lacking in this product is a tape counter. the recording is excellent and you can use it on meetings and during class because the mic is sensitive enough to "hear" sounds from a distance. overall, i recommend this product for students and professionals. you will really deserve what you pay for.

Good For Class & Mtg Lectures
I use this for class to record lectures. I sit in the front and I pick up adequate amplification. However, if someone in the 4th through 6th row asks a question, it is a difficult to hear. During playback, I have to turn up the volume on those sections.

A few things I wish I had were
* a LED light signalling that I was recording. I have accidently forgotten to press the record button and just hit play. So, I have dead air.
*Auto shutoff when I am recording and get to the end of the tape. It doesn't shut off and it makes this screeching (but not too loud) noise when it hits the end of the tape. Which is kind of embarrasing. i have to pay attention to where the tape is at, which you can see through the window.
* It doesn't have a counter on it, so if I am taking notes, I can't write down the position I am at during the note taking.

Yet, for the price, I got what I paid for. It is a decent recorder. I have no complaints, only suggestions I want to get when I upgrade to another recorder.

Good for voice
I got this recorder to tape rehearsals with my band. Unfortunately, it's not well suited to that purpose--both settings on the microphone are too sentitive to record such loud sounds as drums and amplified guitar. The best bang for your bucks!
I've been using this Sony for recording church services for a couple years now. Obviously, this is not a high-tech operation. I convert the tape into digital format for editing on my PC to create CD's. I've been able to make some great tapes so far and I'm recording in a huge "cathedral" type church. For the size and cost, I think it's great. I don't think I'd use it for listening to music as the microphone is rather "noisey". I recommend this for persons who aren't ready to make a major investment in high-tech recording equipment.

Pay a little bit more for important features
The Sony TCM-150 is about the cheapest cassette recorder on the market at this time.For five to ten bucks more you get voice activation, an external microphone jack, a tape counter, and extended play/record.The models with these features are the Sony TCM-200DV (without the tape counter) and the Panasonic RQ-L31.Of course, in all these cases, you're getting a cheaply made recorder intended for lectures, notes and inteviews.If you want something for music or that's built to take some punishment you'll have to pay more.

Last word on the 150: The odds are you're going to need at least one of those extra features - especially voice activation.Pass on this one and pay just a tiny bit more for something better. ... Read more

Great printer; not a very good scanner
The HP PSC 1350 is an excellent color inkjet printer. Text and images are clear and vibrant.

Unfortunately, the built-in flatbed scanner leaves much to be desired. Colors come out looking "washed out" or inaccurate. The images are blurry, and if you apply the built-in sharpening, the edges become jagged.

Nevertheless, the scanner is good enough for making quick black & white copies like you would with a Xerox machine. Just don't expect it to be good enough for photographs. Get a real scanner for that.

Great printer, but beware the ink prices!
I was thrilled to find a multifunctional printer for such a good price. It prints gorgeous photos even without the special photo ink, the scanner is the best I've used so far, the copier function is super easy to use, and the card reader was a nice surprise (I thought it was only for printing directly from a memory card - turns out you can use it to open files from the card on your computer). I haven't used the proof-sheet function yet so I can't comment on that.I only have two gripes with it: 1. the top of the scanner doesn't come off - this would make it a lot easier to scan/copy book pages or other things that aren't completely flat or are larger than the scanner itself; 2. The ink costs a small fortune! Even at a military exchange store, where prices are usually pretty low, it's $25 for black, $35 for color. I guess that's how they make up for the low price of the printer itself!Overall, though, it's such a great item that I had to give it 4 stars.

Best bang for the buck
This printer is a really good value. I am just heading off to college and I think that this printer can do everything a college student needs to do. It can do everything from print out my essays, to creating high nice looking photographs (the printer includes 15 sheets of photo paper). The all-in-one also make copies fast and with good clarity. This printer is with out a doubt the best bang for the buck.

Great printer!
I have no problems with this printer. The photo printing is excellent (more than what I expected). It is a great size for a multi-function printer (I thought it was going to be huge like a lot of the other multi-function printers but its not!). If you are looking for an inexpensive printer yet still has quality, then this is the one!

HP blew it on this one
After our HP multi-function printer was damaged in a lightning storm we purchased this cheaper version. What a mistake! After finally getting the software to load, when the paper isn't jammed, it shakes and sputters until it finally spits out a damp feeling print. I guess you get what you pay for. Not bad
I used to own this model of Sony DVD player. It played DVD's and CD's well for about two to three years and gave out. I replaced it with another Sony DVD player which lasted a little under two years.

I like Sony products, but I was disappointed to see it last such a short amount of time. I also have a Panasonic DVD player which has outlasted both Sony DVD players. Just make sure you fill out the warranty in case anything goes wrong. It worked really well when it worked. So Good Luck!

A Decent Multidisc Player
The Sony DVP-S575P is my smallest and lightest midi-sized, multi-voltage (works from 110-240 V) DVD player to date. The output on this player can be considered somewhat comprehensive: 1 set of RGB out (Progressive/Normal output), 1 set of AV (Video/Left/Right) out, an S-Video out, an Optical Digital Out plus a Coaxial Digital Out. The only thing missing is a DVI output for easier connection to LCD displays.

Disc type compatibility of this DVD player is somewhat better than my older Sony DVP-NC615, which occassionally refuses to play DVD-R discs.

As with most Malaysian Sony DVD players, the DVP-NS575P plays not just Region 3 discs but also American and European imports as well. Have yet to test the player for Regions 4,5 or 6 as I don't own any titles from those countries.

The remote control however was a disappointment: Sony has appearently decided no one reads English characters anymore and have replaced almost all the words printed alongside the buttons with symbols. Also, some of the more basic controls like Disc Repeat can only be activated if you have the player connected to a TV, as there are no direct buttons on the remote to activate them.

While My Sony 5-DVD Changer DVP-NC615 has lasted over two years as my day-to-day CD changer (and still kicking), I'm keeping my fingers crossed for this new model in view of the negative reviews posted here.

Paid USD 96 for it at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Fact is that this a very good dvd player for its reliability and money. It will play any dvd I throw at it; dvd-r/rw and dvd+r/rw as well of a bunch of my cdr's. I burn every dvd I rent from netflix and I still have not ran into any problems with this dvd player,and best of all its a SONY...

Died in 5 months
This product is "cheap" and you get what you pay for in this case.Sony has made the product "cheap" enough to make having warranty service more expensive than buying another unit.Be aware that if you have problems you will probably be forced into buying a new unit.I will say that Sony customer support was great up until they gave me the bad news.Most support you would have to just assume your only option is to buy another unit!

Slim yet powerful performer
This replaced an aged Sony DVD player which lacked DVD-R or MP-3 playback.Got this at an attractive price and even got free shipping.Performs quite well although navigating the on screen is a tad less intuitive than on the older model.It also takes a bit loinger to detect the disc type, perhaps essential to good playback.No 5.1 analog connections as I had before, just optical so until I can get the correctoptical cable (didn't need this before) I cannot take advantage of the built-in DTS capabilities.

REAlLY COOL
This discman is such a cool discman. as you can see from the pictures amazon.com provided, it looks like there is no next of previes song buttons. But its kinda like the ipod. Insted of little tiny buttons its in a shape of a cirlce and its nice big buttons so cool

Almost Perfect
I bought this to replace a 7 year old Sony Walkman CD. The old unit had been dropped a couple of times and eventually became annoying, (pausing at random moments, skipping songs, etc.) I think the old one was a good unit, it just couldn't take all my abuses. I didn't think a "sports" model would survive any better, since it is just the same thing, but water resistant.

This model runs well, reads burnt CD-R without a problem, and sounds 50% better than other brands in the same price range. They put the AA battery pocket inside the CD lid instead of under it, so I can leave the duct-tape replacement cover out of this one. It appears to be more frugal with batteries

I only gave it four stars for two design flaws. The clip-over-the-ears earphones are not an improvement over the older headphones. They tangle, the bass is a little thinner, and they don't cooperate with the earpieces of my glasses. The other flaw is the colored cover over the LCD window. The bright orange plastic makes it harder to read the LCD and I think it will be the first thing to get scratched, making reading even harder.

This will be my third Sony CD player in about 12 years. The sound and durability still make it a good buy for the money. ... Read more

It has been three years since I bought my last Apple computer.

When I saw this G5 20" widescreen that now comes fully loaded, I was very impressed. It was loaded with TIGER (OS X.4) which ran like a Benz!

Thats before I got this big boy home!

Wow, loaded with wireless networking, bluetooth and a fast DVD double sided burner using a high speed connection, it is rocket fast and a state of the art machine!

It was easy to connect and all I needed for my own taste was an extra 512 meg of ram at $75.00.

I can now use Adobe Photoshop along with iPhoto and other applications all at the same time, and the spinning wheel is a thing of the past. The iMac is now a VERY fast aand smooth running machine.

I have the wireless Apple keyboard and mouse that came with mine and it only adds to the thrill of this zoom computer.

I could go on and on...but....

Pro's- the entire iMac !!!!

Convenience of DVD worth the degraded video quality?
I am a point and shoot type: Kids/parties/family stuff. No pro training or desire. I just wanted a new camcorder to video the little ones as they grew up.

I haven't bought a camcorder in 10+ years and I did a lot of research. I was ready to buy a Sony DCR TRV38, but the new DVD recorders had just come out. These are 2 different categories of camcorders, but each has its appeal. I decided to give the DVD201 a try for the convenience of direct DVD recording. I have compared the two (borrowed my parents' TRV38 for comparison) side by side. Here are my impressions:
1. Size: the DVD201 is smaller and felt good in hand. Very easy controls.

2. The DVD201 didn't have a touch screen LED. That's good for me!! Its LED screen is 2.5" versus 3.5" on the TRV38. Sony has incorporated a new technology for the LED that lets you see it in bright sunlight. This feature was EXCELLENT!! It actually worked. I never had to use the viewfinder because of screen "washout." It easily beat the TRV38 in that department. The TRV38's LED was unusable in bright sunlight.

3. Image quality: Hands-down, the TRV38 wins here. I was a bit disappointed with the DVD201. Why? Read the review of the Sony DCR-HC40 at camcorderinfo.com and you'll see that they weren't impressed with the CCD (sensor) of that camcorder (it got unsatisfactory marks for low-light quality / and video quality in general). Unfortunately, that CCD is the SAME ONE USED IN THE DVD201. In order to make the camcorder smaller, Sony had to reduce the size of the CCD to 1/5". They claim that "new technology" compensates for the smaller sensor......NOT REALLY!! The larger 1/4.7" CCD of the TRV38 shows in the quality of the video. Both have the same 690K effective pixel resolution, so what gives? Does it matter? Not really!! The bottom line is that the TRV38 provides richer, fuller, and brighter video quality than the DVD201 (for $200 less). The DVD201 video looked gray and washed-out compared to the TRV38. Maybe it's the media itself; mini-DV versus mini-DVD. Maybe it's the sensor. Maybe it's the recording format. It doesn't matter why......the video quality doesn't compare to cheaper units. [side note: the TRV38 has consistently earned very high marks for video quality and low-light ability]

4. As far as low-light ability, the TRV38 "wins" here too, but not by that much. I thought the DVD201 was comparable here with the TRV38. In low light, both videos were a bit grainy. The "Super nightshot plus" gimmicks were just that; gimmicks. The DVD201 does look better due to color being incorporated into the nightshot IR scene. Not a big deal, however.

5. Here's where the new Sony shines: The convenience of the DVD201 is unmatched. Simply pop in a mini-DVD (expensive media, however) and record away. Unfortunately, you have to "finalize" the disc before playing it in a DVD player. The manual warns that this process could take 1 minute to 2 hours?!? HUH? I have burned several so far and it never took more than 3 minutes. Here's the real kicker: Pop the finalized disc into your DVD player and watch it right now!! It's that simple. You will be enjoying your videos while everyone else with a mini-dv camcorder is still trying to hook up the darn camera to the TV with cables. THIS IS THE SINGLE BIGGEST REASON TO BUY THIS CAMCORDER..........Convenience. You don't have to download anything to your computer, compile it, burn a DVD (on the computer), and then pop it into the DVD player.

6. My kids love to watch their home videos...right now!! This camera eliminates the need to hook up anything to your TV with cables (where little hands can break an expensive camera). If you loathe the thought of taking video on a mini-DV, downloading it to the computer via hotwire, compiling/editing your obviously amateur video, re-writing it to a DVD with a DVD burner, and ONLY then get to enjoy it "effortlessly" on your TV, then the DVD201 is for you.

7. Here's the downfall, however; Not much editing ability with the DVD201. Using a DVD-R disc, you burn the DVD as you are taking the video. If you use a DVD-RW, you can download the video to the computer, erase, edit, and rewrite with it. (Apparently, the supplied editing software sucks, but I can't comment because I haven't used it). I will probably never edit much, so I don't mind. If you love to edit, think twice about this camera.

PROs: Small size, good feel, excellent LED screen, ultra convenient DVD media (can eliminate computer interface if desired), perfect if you don't care about doing much editing, excellent image stabilization, "finished product" for kids' review very quick (shoot the video, finalize disk, ready for DVD player, DONE!!), good sound quality

CONs: Video quality not as good as cheaper units (looks gray/washed-out), expensive media, sound of DVD spinning captured on tape (low "whir" audible), a bit grainy low-light performance, no wind filter, not much editing ability

HERE'S THE QUESTION TO ASK YOURSELF: Is the convenience of the DVD media worth an extra 200 bucks at the expense of video quality? I'm still debating. Don't get me wrong. The video quality is good, but not great. The DVD201 is a good point and shoot camcorder, but isn't video quality what it's all about? Maybe. Maybe not. Convenience is a huge factor for some of us. One thing is for sure; the DVD201 beats the heck out of the JVC VHS-C I'm replacing. Of course that camcorder is 10+ years old.

BOTTOM LINE: Who will buy this camcorder? People who place convenience at the top of their list of features and are willing to sacrifice some video quality to get it!!!

Glad I waited for this model to be released!!!!
This is a nice camcorder it stacks up well against the competition regardless of recording medium. Feels solid, lcd doesn't wash out in the sunlight, small form factor and great image quality. The main reason I bought this because I wanted I wanted to go with DVD though. The main reason to choose DVD is for the convenience of being able to pop it in a home DVD player. The way it splits scenes into DVD chapters is a nice feature. It's obviously a trade off with being able to edit your footage easily as you can with DV tape, but I never got around to most of the editing I wanted to do. For me it is better to concentrate on shooting good quality video that doesn't need editing, similar to my preference for shooting well framed and exposed still images that don't need post processing.

Now you can record directly onto 3-inch DVD-R and DVD-RW at resolutions comparable to MiniDV.
Best of all, the DVD media can easily be viewed on most current DVD players and PCs, making playback a snap. You can even capture still JPEG images up to a maximum resolution of 1152 x 864 thanks to its 1-megapixel CCD imager. It's like having both a camcorder and digital camera in one. The DCR-DVD201 also includes all of the options you'd want from a Sony camcorder, such as a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Tessar® lens, 10X optical zoom, Super NightShot Plus night recording system and Super SteadyShot picture stabilization. Good but not great camcorder-
The DCRDVD201 camcorder is a pleasure to use because it is not difficult to operate, has many great features, and probably its best feature- it is very small and lightweight.
It does not take hours of user manual reading and fidgeting around with the camera to begin using it, and ocassionally referring to the manual to use its more complicated features is all you need to do.
The steady shot is always on and makes recording and viewing easy. The super night shot works well also, but unless your nocturnal, it doesn't get used too much.

The image mixer software that comes with the camera is not as self explanatory as the camera is, but with a little extra effort and time, the program is versatile and capable of handling all your editing needs.
The hype over the DVD camcorders is over done. Unless you buy and use the expensive little DVD-+R's to record onto, and have nothing to edit, there is little benefit to recording directly to a DVD. But if you use the DVD-RW's so you can edit, erase, and re-record, you are going through the motions of putting the video on your computer anyway; which you can do with miniDV or another recording format. In short, the DVD's that you record to is just temporary storage, if you, like most people will edit your recording before putting the video on a final DVD-+R.
I say all that to say- suprisingly, the picture quality is argueably not as good as miniDV and if you are going to have to transfer your recorded material to a computer to edit and finalize anyway- you may want to save yourself the extra $500 and buy a camcorder that doesn't record onto DVD-+R's. ... Good and Cheap.
These things were more or less perfected about 20 years ago.Since then, manufacturers like Sony and Panasonic have only made incremental improvements and cosmetic changes to the basic design.I have one of this model, and it lived up to my (low) expectations.Reception in both bands is quite good.Sound quality, as one would expect, is a bit tinny, but clear; far better for voice broadcasts than music.Fit and finish is decent as well, and the belt clip is metal rather than plastic, which means you can actually use it without fear of it snapping off and smashing your radio on the floor.But hell, it's so cheap that even if you do break it...well, it's just a cheap radio, albeit one that will probably outlast your CD player.

Best 10 bucks I've spent in years!

2nd Sony Dsc-l1 Very Upset
I loved the style, size, functions, and picture results of this camera. Only problem--- it breaks very easily.

My first camera the button controler was loose and did not work. Got it replaced shortly after the purchase.
Seocnd camera, after a few weeks the lens would not open.

I even kept both cameras in a large padded case.

I wish the sony dsc-l1 was more durable and reliable- then it would be a perfect camera.

So far so good.
Well, this is my 3rd digital camera, and my second Sony. I recently sold my Canon SD110, which was an excellent camera but I needed the $$$. This camera I wanted it to be an upgrade, so I went from a 3.2 to a 4 megapixel camera. I am very happy so far.

Probably the biggest selling point is the SIZE, Wow! My Canon was a bit thinner, but this is smaller and with more megapixels for 25$ less than my Canon when I bought it new.

For me, Canon and Sony are in a dead heat when it comes to consumer friendly/amateur/high resolution/amazingly compact cameras. Canon has a bit of a technical edge because they seem to have more features and better photo quality (probably not discernable to the naked eye). But Sony has the technical edge on simplicity and size. You decide which is best, but both brands are excellent.

I am happy so far, and I highly recommend this camera. If you want great, high resolution photos, with a metal encased camera the size of a chubby snickers bar(just shorter) for about two-fifty$, then this is the camera for you.

It's going back
One reviewer mentioned that their L1 broke on the 29th picture.I never even got that far - it arrived with a malfunctioning zoom.Also, image quality has been highly erratic (could be the flourescent problem another user mentioned).This is my first digital - I'm an experienced SLR and computer user, but I found the menu to be cumbersome, and the LCD very small.The camera is very "cute" and compact, but I'll be looking into either a different Sony or Canon for an exchange.

A Great Design!
This is the first digital camera I ever got, and man, did I not regret purchasing it. There is so much that I can say about this camera, but I want to keep it down too a minimum.

Pros:
*Design - Slick and portable: Pretty much the height and length of a credit card, and the width of two CD Cases. So compact, I easily lose it in my pocket sometimes!
*Picture Quality - 3x Optical Zoom with 3.4 Megapixels and a Carl Zeiss lensframe. Don't understand what I'm saying? Neither do I, but damn if these pictures aren't good looking.
*Weight - Remember the really old cameras where you had to put them on a tripod, put your hand up holding a huge bulb, and hide your head under a cloth to take a picture? Well yeah, this isn't anything like it :-P
*Video - Not really something to point out here, but I just love filming video on my camera with friends (I've made over 100 videos, and I have a 1 GB Stick, allowing to film up to 46 minutes per video!)

Cons:
*Microphone - Filming takes a little used to, considering the microphone is on top of the camera where I usually put my index finger to rest
*Scroll button - Looking through the menus and previews of pictures/videos can be tough, being that the scroll is just a tiny knob that you have to push to the left/right/up/down.

In my opinion, a great first buy for me. I worship this thing for what it can do, even if it does not do as much compared to other types of cameras. If you want to start out small and relatively cheap, this product can be a great thing to buy.

Great little "on the go" camera
I've been a long time user of Sony digital cameras. The two I currently have (P5 and P100) have performed beautifully over the years. I've never had a lick of problem with either. So, when I decided to buy a small compact camera that I could throw in a pocket I decided to go with Sony again. After looking at the T1 model, I wasn't too impressed with the picture quality. Too much of a compromise was made to get the unit small. Then I can across the L1. It has been the perfect little camera. It's small- about the size of a Snicker's bar- so I can keep it in my pocket. The pictures are terrific- 4Mp meets all my needs. The picture quality has been superb too. Much better than the T1. Although I mostly run it off of full auto mode, it does have nearly as many manual options as my P100 has (ISO, scenes, quality). And to top it off, the camera is fast. Power on to first shot plus shot to shot timing is lightning fast. I've been very happy with this camera.

There are a few things that keep me from giving it a full 5 stars. First, while the LCD is sharp and works well in most lighting, it's still on the small size compared to other cameras. There is room on the camera where they could have put in a 1.8" or even 2" LCD instead. That would have made a big difference. Also for some reason, Sony chose to go with a separate bracket for tripod attachment instead of putting the screw mount right on the camera. This is a pain. Fortunately, I don't use a tripod with the L1 very often.

Overall the L1 is a great little camera. For the cost, it's portability and picture quality can't be beat ... Read more

Perfect for self portraits !
The swivel lens is by far the best feature of this camera.It allows you to take very creative shots from many different angles.The swivel also serves two other purposes - (1) By swiveling the lens, it turns the camera on and off and (2) In the closed position, it acts as a lens cap protecting the lens from damage.Also new to the F-series is the inclusion of a viewfinder.This is helpful when the lcd screen is obscured by sun glare.

One aspect where this camera really shines is in taking unassisted portrait photos of my wife and me.All I do is stand the camera on a level surface, rotate and zoom the lens for proper framing, click on the timer and quickly get into position with my wife.And since the lcd is facing us, we can easily adjust our positioning.Also, since the camera acts as its own tripod, the pictures are always crisp (No more hunting down strangers for assistance and no more badly taken shots).

Picture quality is very good for a 5mp compact.I have found that the key to taking good photographs with this camera is by utilizing the manual and preset settings.Most people use the auto mode in their picture taking, and most of the time this is sufficient, however, I have found that by leveraging the built in Scene modes, I get a much clearer and crisper picture.

Battery life is excellent with over 300+ shots on a single charge.However, I would still recommend getting an extra one for backup power.

One accessory that I would recommend getting is the docking station.This item serves a dual purpose.It downloads your photos to your pc and charges the camera at the same time.

Because of its form this camera also has a strong WOW! factor.Every place I go, people always ask what kind of camera it is.They are quite surprised to hear that it is a Sony product.I guess most of them associate Sony digi cams with the candy bar shape of the P series.

For some reason this camera is not available at the usual retail outlets (at least not yet).It's a shame because in my opinion, this is one of the most versatile cameras I have ever purchased.

Good Pictures but Big Flaws
I really like the lens quality and picture quality overall. My experience with it over the past 4+ months (which includes a 2 week vacation) are the following:

PRO's
- Fast start-up for more spontaneous shots.
- Good Image quality.
- Swivel lens gives nice, low eye level shots. Might be fun for pets and kids

CON's
- Colors can be a bit bluish sometimes
- Swivel Lens doesn't allow that many great shots of people with backgrounds. Since the distance from the lens to people (in self portraits) depends on your height and arm length, your mileage will vary. I'm about 6', and found the camera's ability to swivel back at you to be limited for capturing people and backgrounds. I bought the optional wide angle lens (x0.7) which helps... but that attachment prevents you from rotating the lens back into the camera body. This means it won't fold compactly for travel anymore.
- My biggest gripe, and this is a very big one, is that mode selection can be buggy due to the software. I've had almost 2 dozen instances in which the mode selection dial has failed me. In those instances, there is no way for me to access the set-up mode, the playback/review mode, or the movie mode. I find that extremely irritating and I don't know of any solution. I've tried taking the battery out, turning the power off, taking the battery out while the power is still on (Can you see how desparate this flaw can make you?). This flaw kills the camera for me.

UPDATE: Seems like the mode selection problem above was due to a faulty motherboard that Sony replaced. Their customer service handles the problem quickly and professionally. LOOK before you leap
On the positive side, it is an attractive unit.

In the negative side, it will not directly record unless you use the "+" format. Unfortunately this is not compatible with many DVD players.

In other words, buyer beware.

Sony gets an A+ in my book!
To start, reading some of the other reviews on this page it seems many either are trying to do things with the wrong equipment attached (Laptop? Throw all the memory you want in it, but the bus speed is what kills you, use a desktop!) or who are not familiar with NERO software (probably the best for the PC). If you don't know how to use NERO, find another. DVDxCOPY had no trouble copying one of these DVDs for me.

I took this unit out of the box, connected my video camera (8mm) and then had a DVD in about 2 hours that played fine. I connected to my DESKTOP PC (1.8ghz, 512RAM, WINXP) and made a nice set of menus on another job and burned another "PERFECT" copy. The quality is a great considering the source.

To me this unit was worth its weight in gold! My kids have been watching home movies in their own DVD players all weekend. I found several clips that I did not know that I had on hand as well. The best part is that it is "STAND ALONE", I made 15 2 hour DVD without a PC while I was at work all weekend.

Since I am so far away from were I grew up (1400 miles), this year I am planning to send a set of 25 (2 hour) DVDs out to my Grandmother, Mom, Dad, and a couple of others.

Buy this unit and enjoy it! Remember, those old films only last so long in storage, and on a DVD you can bounce around pretty fast to parts you want to see.

Excellent DVD Burner
I purchased this item from TigerDirect (highly recommended as well) and it is absolutly excellent. I have burned my camcorder movies (Sony as well), photos from my computer and music as well. There isn't anything this burner won't do. I did alot of reseach before I finally bought it. It was a very good choice. Sony makes some excellent products and this is one of them.

Prohibited Recording a Major Problem
Part of the appeal of the Sony DVDirect is the ability to perform double duty - acting as a stand-alone DVD burner and an external DVD burner for the computer. This machine won't allow a connection for both at the same time. The lack of a simple switch from computer to stand-alone mode is very poor planning.

The biggest problem, as others have stated, is the "prohibited recording" system. The system is clearly too sensitive. It misidentifies home movies and television programs (recorded many years ago) as being protected works, possibly due to the instability of the tracking, audio/video glitches, etc. I've not attempted to copy any program that would be "copy protected" yet I've still made about ten frisbees. The "prohibited recording" system will activate in the middle of a recording, rendering the disc unusable. As another reviewer mentioned, it also activates with no warning light. You'll only known your project is ruined if you have your eyes glued to the unit screen.

The DVDirect creates some great options, including using the unit for "Live" DVD recording at events. Sadly, it's claim to backup-to-DVD your collection of old VHS to DVD is randomly inhibited by it's "prohibited recording" system.
