Speck Products' clear SkinTight Mini Skin protects your Apple iPod mini from scratches and bumps without bulking it up--that would defeat the whole "mini" concept, of course. The Mini Skin features a removable lanyard that lets you wear your mini like an article of clothing. (Hip folks in Japan wear their cell phones this way, too.)

The SkinTight iPod Skin stretches over your iPod mini from the bottom opening. Speck's iPod Skin is reportedly the only skin that protects all four top corners. The Skin's shock-absorbing, tear-resistant Kraton plastic will probably outlast the player itself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent FM Transmitter
Before I write my review, I want to say that this is my first review here on Amazon.com. Well I guess I must be way out of the loop here as I just discovered this type of a device, a way of connecting audio devices to your car without the need for the conventional cassette car adapter. I've been looking at these things for a few days now and decided that I was going to go with the Belkin TuneCast II Mobile FM Transmitter from Best Buy.

I go there only to find they didn't have any, so I decided I'd get this one instead, which surprisingly, (at least not at the time of this review), wasn't listed on their web site, So before I left I bought along my Sony Walkman with a few tapes I love listening to so that I could test this thing out when I got it.

As the instructions say, insert the RadioPlay in to your cigarette lighter, connect the mini headphone jack in to your portable device, select the FM station you want the sound to come through, select the same FM channel on your RadioPlay and your good to go. Living here in Maine, USA there are no stations on 88.1, (I checked before I bought this and you should too).

There is an 88.3 which is clear as a bell but there is nothing coming in on 88.1, so I chose this as my default station, (I didn't test the others). Turning the sound all the way up on my Walkman I was able to hear it coming through the speakers, and boy is it cool! Using my CD player I was able to adjust the bass, treble and volume accordingly to get the best sound, and it's very good.

Some people complain you hear static noise coming from the speakers, while this is true, (it doesn't block this), it plays over the top of it and unless your playing a ballad or listening to speech, this won't be a problem, the static noise was quiet anyway, so for me it wasn't a big deal.

The sound highly depends on your car stereo setup, the clarity of the recording and I'm sure your audio device would have something to do with it. I do have an MP3 player but I didn't test this, I would probably say that if your MP3s are at 320Kbps, 44Kz Stereo, you could probably get it sounding at 128Kbps with a little less clarity. If you could get CD sound or close to it, you'll just hear a bit of static in the background, (particially with songs that don't have many instruments or as I said ealier, ballads / speech).

On the packaging, it doesn't state what the range is, so I'm not sure if for example, the person driving behind you could pick it up, they might be able to, but it probably wouldn't be all that clear, no big deal. Overall, this thing rocks, I can't wait to test this out with some other tapes and my MP3 player, absolutely well worth it! ... Read more

Amazon.com Review

Conventional wisdom has long held that bigger means better when it comes to headphones. The thinking has been that a larger headphone isolates and covers the ear, letting it experience sounds more fully. Shure's E5c earphones are on the vanguard of a new school of thought: Tiny is actually better. Shure has managed to cram dual-driver speakers into small earphones that isolate the listener from virtually all background noise. If you don't mind the secret service look, and you're ready to spend more on your headphones than you spent on your MP3 player, the E5c's won't disappoint. In this case, you really do get what you pay for.

Design
While the E5c earbuds are larger than other earphone-style headphones, they're still stunningly small. The cord, which includes an inline crossover unit that separates high- and low-frequency signals, is thin and pliant. A bendable stiffening material is added to the section of cable that runs behind the ears, allowing the listener to loop the cables over and behind the ear-- a simple and discreet solution. The gold-plated, 3.5mm input connector has a low-profile elbow bend to minimize accidental unplugging and snags. Shure includes a detachable in-line volume attenuator that controls volume without the need to fiddle with your player or listening source. The attenuator did seem a tad larger than it needed to be and, because it is not built into the E5c cord, it must be plugged in at the end of the cord. More than one tester said, "Why not just change the volume on the iPod instead of this doo-dad plugged directly into it?" A solution that places the attenuator nearer the listener's chest would be a welcome addition, but it's admittedly a minor niggle.

In an effort to match the earphones to ears of all shapes and sizes, the E5c earphones come with a number of earplug "sleeves" packaged in what Shure calls a "fit kit". Our testers had little trouble finding a sleeve that felt comfortable. We especially liked the expanding foam sleeves that, like those foam dinosaurs that grow in water, expand to fit the contours of the ear canal.

Lost in Sound
With the E5c earphones comfortably placed in our ears, we listened to a range of music genres encoded in both music CD and MP3 format. The most common response was, "Wow, I never knew this song had all these other instruments." Indeed, the E5c's have such dramatic clarity and frequency response that we were left wondering how we'd ever listened to music any other way. They're that good. The earphones produce the sensation that the music is actually inside one's head. Bass vibrates the cerebral cortex, high ranges dance in the frontal lobes. While Shure posts impressive impedence and sensitivity ratings for the E5c's, the truth is in the listening and we were simply blown away. In loud, crowded environments such as airplane cabins and teeming Seattle coffee shops, we heard absolutely nothing but music, a sensation that is both eerie and liberating. Anyone who says there is no difference between high-bitrate MP3 and CD audio tracks should strap on a pair of these earphones. The difference is striking.

The earphones remained comfortable after extended use, especially with the expanding foam sleeves. Listeners with especially small ears may want to give the E5c's a trial run; they are somewhat larger than the other, more affordable earphones in Shure's "E" line. This concern aside, if you have the ears, and the earmarked funds, for the E5c's, you are in for a listening adventure like none other. --Joshua Gunn

Pros

  • Simple, compact design
  • Designed for compatibility with most ears
  • Did somebody say something? We were lost in sonic bliss.
Cons
  • Costs more than many things it plugs into
  • May be a tad big for small ears
  • Volume attenuator could be better designed and integrated

5-0 out of 5 stars iTrip: Use your iPod in the car
You are looking at the coolest iPod accessory in the world. The iTrip FM transmitter for the iPod can play your music through any FM radio in your car, at a party, wherever the mood strikes you - and you have a radio.

It's clear that the iTrip is made specifically for the iPod. This gives iTrip advantages over similar devices. For example, with the iTrip, you can have the cleanest possible signal - because you can choose any radio station on the dial to tune for the best performance possible. You do this by 'playing' special station codes directly from the iPod itself. Simple.

Another advantage of the iTrip is that it needs no batteries, it receives its tiny amount of power from the iPod, and it can rotate out of the way to charge the iPod while still in use. No more batteries ever again.

There's not even a power switch - just plug it in and go. It shuts off automatically after 60 seconds of silence - just like the iPod. The iTrip is the ultimate accessory for the iPod because it allows you to share the music and share the fun beyond your headphones. Don't leave home without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars a very acceptable compromise
i just bought my itrip after trying several other fm transmitter units. this is by far the best - there's no wires connecting the ipod to the transmitter or the transmitter to the cig lighter - very, very clean. i like the fact that i can now match a station on my radio to a selected station on the ipod. no more 'fine tuning' that drifts no matter what. i keep my volume control down to the lowest portion of the recommended scale (griffin says 40% to 80%) as i find mine works best at or just below the 50% mark. i have an original ipod with the firewire port on top. the itrip fit perfectly and there is no interference with the protective leather case i use. when operating, i place it on my dash or console - the signal is about the same. there is some noise when getting under very high tension electrical wires or alongside some old clunker running bad ignition wires - but this interference fades quickly and hasn't overpowered my music to date (i've noticed the same at times listening to an fm station on the high end of the dial). i live in the nashville metro area with many stations and have found the factory preset (87.9) works well. installation from the included cd was a breeze and i found the instruction booklet was very clear. a great way, a great price, and easy installation to get my ipod music to go with me when i hit the road.

4-0 out of 5 stars Correction
Someone earlier wrote;

>Radio quality is only 92kbps<

That is misleading. The new HD Radio signal is only 92kbs, but regular FM is analog, limited only by the multiplex stereo system in use that forces a high frequency cutoff at 15KHz. Technically, analog FM (without the required cutoff) would sound better than CDs, as it does not have the low bit rate of even CDs, and as a transmission system does not have problems with hiss as did old old tapes, or problems with scratches as did old LP records.

Of course most FM stations now play CDs or MP3s, and they often compress their signals to make themselves sound louder. But technically, FM sound is about as good as it gets, transmission-wise.

3-0 out of 5 stars The search goes on...
I needed a way to play my iPod through my car speakers; I expected loud, great sounding quality of sound. I have tried cassette adaptors, which are just horrible.

This is a FM transmitter, meaning that it transmits a radio signal to a specific radio bandwidth, e.g. the popular radio stations you listen to like 95.7FM, plays its music through that specific bandwidth. The iTrip has about 100 different FM settings that you can select and play through. Problem is, a lot of FM stations are already taken up, and, a lot of stations do not work well with the iTrip. So really, more than half of the stations that are provided are useless.

Next, is the difficulty of finding the perfect station. I mean, who really has the time to go through each station to see which one works the best? I sure don't. I use the default setting of 88.1FM, which is fine, half the time. Other half of the time it is filled with static, and often, other bandwidths take over the dinky iTrip's frequency.

The sound quality is of course, radio quality. This means, poor quality. Default CD quality is 128kbps. Radio quality is only 92kbps. Which is, pretty bad. I was trying to play my iTrip on my friend's system in his car, and it sounded horrid. Also, I am one of those obnoxious people who like to play their music loud. Only problem with the iTrip is that if you turn the iPod's volume more than 85%, than the static gets 5x worse and the quality gets 2x as worse. The car speakers can only go so loud as well, so for people like me who turn their music up all the way, the iTrip does not provide that.

The only good thing about this is the "aerodynamic" shape and merging with the iPod. It fits right on top of the iPod, and doesn't have any cords. Very convenient. It also does not need to use batteries, nor does it need to be charged. It uses power straight from the iPod itself. So no cords, no batteries. That leaves the iTrip alone in the race for the best iPod radio transmitter.

I give it 3 stars because it is very convenient when compared to other radio transmitters of its kind for iPod users. However, it cannot be used for any other types of devices of course, so if you're stuck with just a CD player one day without your iPod for some whacked, random reason... you are stuck with just your earphones. The quality is horrible 65% of the time and finding a good radio station is hard. But besides getting direct connection with your stereo through adaptors and having the right deck for your car, this is the next best thing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Works Well in D.C.
I have an iPod Mini and have been using the iTrip with this for about three months now. It works extremely well in the car (2001 Volvo)and through my home and work radios. I live in the Washington, D.C. metro area. I've used this in Baltimore and on drives out to the Eastern shore. I only occasionally get a little static which tends to go away within a minute or less. I am buying a second Mini and iTrip for my wife. ENJOY. ... Read more

Speck Products' Mini SkinTight iPod skins protect your iPod mini from scratches and bumps, so you can enjoy your favorite music on the move without damaging your music player. iPod skins are made of odor-free Dynaflex, a strong, soft, rubbery polymer that feels comfortable and secure in the hand. In addition, the skin preserves the mini's most notable feature--its diminutive size--unlike much of the clunky competition. To apply, simply stretch one of the skins over your iPod mini from the skin's bottom opening. Listeners can easily access the headphone jack, FireWire port, and hold switch thanks to the skin's multiple cutouts. This triple pack of iPod mini skins comes with a trio of different-colored skins: one clear, one green, and one blue. The pack also includes a single removable lanyard (strap) so you can easily wear your iPod mini around your neck.
