Amazon.com Review

Back in 1999, Apple introduced its desktop video production program that would soon change the way filmmakers thought about video. So much has been said about digital video and making home movies on your computer, it's easy to forget that just over two years ago the options were limited. Professional-quality systems were prohibitively expensive, while consumer software was often awkward, unstable, limited, or frankly, not very fun. Final Cut Pro put an end to that, at least for Macintosh users. Sure, version 1.0 had some unpleasant quirks common with initial versions of software. But its pleasing design, simplicity, and solid integration of tools assured users they were working with something special.

Final Cut Pro 2.0, the long-awaited upgrade, adds several key enhancements, while the same QuickTime-based architecture and concepts from 1.0 remain intact. Improvements in FCP 2.0 include the new Media Manager, which is great for copying clips into a new project and deleting unused portions of clips. FCP 2.0 offers better support for Adobe AfterEffects plug-ins, 24 fps (frames per second) editing for film compatibility, and OMF export to pro audio mixing tools like Pro Tools. Add a PCI-based RTMac effects card, and motion effects can be viewed without rendering via QuickTime.

Control of FireWire-based DV (digital video) cameras is a snap. Final Cut will look for devices at startup. From the application you can shuttle your footage to precise locations and capture video and/or audio to a selected hard drive, and log your clips with reel number, description, scene number, and notes. Final Cut Pro 2.0 uses standard source, record, timeline, and bin windows. These are referred to as the viewer, canvas, timeline/sequence, and browser. Simply import your digitized video clips into the browser. Double-click the clip and it pops into the viewer. From here, you can easily set in-and-out points, create filters, and add motion effects in the viewer, then drag the manipulated clip into the timeline.

Apple claims processing power of Final Cut Pro has increased by 30 percent or more. In our test-run of Final Cut Pro 2.0 on a 350 MHz G4, we did notice a performance boost over 1.0 in terms of speed. We chose to build a quick, rough documentary-style edit. Using footage of a street demonstration, we quickly laid out short segments directly from the browser to the timeline. In the timeline we trimmed each clip by dragging its edges (a little window pops up indicating the new clip length as it's trimmed), and made some minor-level adjustments in the audio.

Final Cut allows you to open multiple sequences in one project (as well as have multiple projects open at once), unlike other programs. This is a great feature for building and fine-tuning individual segments or scenes and merging them later. For our street demonstration video, we created four segments of thematically related footage, simply clicking on the tabs (Sequence 1, Sequence 2, etc.) in the timeline to move effortlessly back and forth between the sequences. These window tabs reduce desktop clutter and streamline accessibility to the features of the program. Clicking the Effects tab in the browser window brought up the list of over 75 effects and transitions. By dragging the Dissolve icon between clips we easily added smooth transitions to our segments.

We have, of course, only scratched the surface of what Final Cut Pro 2.0 is capable of. Anyone working seriously with video on a Macintosh should consider Final Cut Pro. For the price, it's the best application you can get. It rivals systems that cost 5 to 10 times as much, and has quite simply revolutionized the desktop video medium by giving consumers and industry professionals access to the same technology. --John Bosch ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but over priced for what you get
I bought a slightly slower version of this two years ago and I was okay with it then. I just recently gave it up because:

1. It crashed a lot.

2. It was feeling pretty slow compared to my desktop at work (I run a lot of the same e-cad software on both).

3. I never seemed to get much more than an hour of battery life after the first year.

I switched my entire setup to Linux (I'm bought a cheap Celeron based laptop, dumped windows and installed RedHat). For less than half of what I paid for my first iBook I have a much faster machine with a 14" LCD and no Windows! I suggest you consider the same.

4-0 out of 5 stars My iBook runs PC industry standard CAD under emulation
I love this thing. I bought the 512 MB RAM and the Airport Card. I use it for all the normal office stuff when I am away from my desk (A WinTel machine). I was sitting in a very boring meeting the other day and used the time to work on the design of my wife's bathroom remodel. I had installed Virtual PC (my version seems to run best in OS 9.2), Windoze 98, and the industry standard CAD (latest version). Finished the floorplan by the end of the meeting....way coolio! I also use it for Photoshop and enjoy running wireless on the net from my backyard while yacking w/my 4-year old daughter. I love the 12" screen; very compact and light!

4-0 out of 5 stars Is cute.
I did work on Pc. I was.. and, i am a Mac enthusiast. Mac Os X is not a perfect OS. XP is much more better.. but the beauty of Mac, the naive semplicity of OS X are cute. I recommend not to use it for intensive work (like programming...). iBook is for teens and for education.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellently thought out, extremely portable machine
I love apple for their attention to design detail. From a power adapter that can be both a brick, or attach a longer cord, to batteries whose charge you can check without turning on the computer, to the built in high quality wireless, everything about this computer is fit and finish.

The software suite is excellent, with Apple's iApps providing a top notch integrated environment for working with digital media. The digital camera/booklet printing integration is particularly impressive, allowing you to produce high quality coffee table books out of your vacation snapshots.

Although not as fast feeling as other computers, once I upgraded the included RAM, the operations felt almost snappy, and it's been a dream to use.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT, NOOOOO PROBLEMS
I love it, no problems!! I recommend, starting with OS 10.2 or higher and get rid of anything less than that! Also, get the airport and airport card. Wireless internet, it's fantastic!! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I finally got it right
I confess it took me a while to get the hang of these little guys, that's why I'm giving them 4 stars only. Having tried my friends original headphones and realizing they were very unconfortable and actually hurt my ears after wearing them for a while, I decided to buy the in-ear Apple headphones when I first got my ipod. At first I tried the medium and the small ear caps since I don't have particularly big ears, but as it has been mentioned before I only managed to get them stay into place when I wasn't moving, excercising or chewing! To my surprise when I tried the large size caps they stayed in my ears even when jogging! What a delight! I'm no sound electronics expert or anything, just a regular music lover, and I must say that with these headphones I have discovered sounds in my favourite songs that I didn't even know were there! A little tricky at first but in the end, a satisfying purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Baloney, these earphones are terrific!
I've got 15 sets of headphones and earphones surrounding me as I write this, and the iPod in-ear phones blow away all of the ear buds and most of the headphones.

They're probably only 4 or 4.5 stars, but I gave 'em 5 to offset the 1-star reviews. Maybe these guys got pre-production phones or had problems with them; mine are excellent. The only complaint I agree with is that cord sounds are transmitted to your ears, so you have to take extra care positioning the cord. But I'd rather have that than having ear buds jiggle when I run or even walk down stairs.

Regarding the tone, they're much flatter in frequency response than ear buds. The lows are not exaggerated, and the highs are very articulate--the ear bud fans probably never heard the highs from their iPods before. They sound very much like my Sennheiser HD 280 Pro phones.

2-0 out of 5 stars There OK
well the sound is clear and pretty-comfortble, but if you have a ipod and the headphones that came w/ it are a hole lot better, The "IN-ear headphones" dont have bass, only a little bit of bass, so it would rate the "IN-ear headphones" 2 out of 5 and the ones that came with the ipod 5 out of 5 (they are just a little big or small (differs on ear size) (of course). so dont get them, if you dont care about bass and all that junt then i guess u might want then

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Fit!!
This are the only earphones that fit in my ears. I love the sound of them and I would highly recommend them.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not On My Wish List
My Headphones were working great but i dont know what's going on with them..my sound is sounding horrible and the wire is very weak so u can get a short very fast.DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but cord is way too long
They are great, the sound quality is great, and the remote is extremely handy. My one and only complaint is that the cord can become annoyingly long. It is basically the normal headphone length, doubled with a remote in the middle.

The remote is fun and handy, and works when your iPod is on hold. The play/pause turns it on and off when held down as the normal button does. It also has it's own hold button. Overall, it's great. However, I think the cord could be shorter and if the price was lower, or you could buy them for cheaper w/out the included normal headphones (and use the money to buy a different type, use the ones you have or whatever) then this would be great.

4 stars

5-0 out of 5 stars Price is set at real value
Although these may not be the best earphones, they are exceptional, especially for the price. Just about the best earphones you can get cost about $500, but if you want exceptional, but not the best, these earphones are for you. The remote, along with your ipod comes in handy if you have your ipod in your pocket, or if you have it in a case. The little remote if fun to have, because it makes it so easy to adjust the volume, and it creates joy in the user. I think that this is a good pair for $40, especially the earphones. Unless you are willin to spend $120 or more, these are the best earphones for their price.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice remote, problematic ear phones
I like the remote - it is well designed and easy to use. It features a pause/play button, track skip (forward and backward), volume, and a hold button so you don't hit the buttons by accident. Especially handy when the iPod is in its case.

The earphones sound pretty good, however, it's hard to keep them from falling out of your ear which is a shame.

Also, the white color of everything is good and bad - on one hand, it's fun because you advertise that you're using an iPod to everyone. On the other hand, it's bad for the same reason because they're so distinctive, some one may steal your iPod!

3-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic features and sound, but some problems
The remote control for iPod is inspired. I love it, and use it all the time. It's fragile, though, and I've been through two of them, working on my third, in less than two years. I had the remote in my purse, dropped my purse, and a nail polish bottle falling on the remote caused the back cover to break off. Not good.

The earphones have great, great sound, tremendous range, but... They are much too big for my ear canals. Wearing them for longer than fifteen minutes is painful. I'm investing in Sony earbuds for this reason. They tend to fit smaller ear canals better, and the EX-71SLB Fontopias definitely fit better, with their three sizes of bud covers. Can't go wrong there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent device!
I use my IPod mini mostly at the gym. The remote is a handy little device that clips into either the mini, or full-sized IPod. The earphones produce great sound, but like so many "in-ear" devices fall out easily. Apple really needs to produce and include an "over the ear" type of headset.

The remote control has a clip so it can be attached to clothing. It is fully functional, including volume and hold switches.

Buy some decent Sony headphones, and you've got quite a good combo. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars expensive
I haven't actually tried this armband, but wanted to tell you about my discovery: I was about to buy this $30 item, when I realized that my new mini iPod fits my radio armband strap like it was made for it!(Sony Walkman Radio SRF-M80V, the orange and white one that it seems like every runner I see has) So check what you already have before purchasing--I run with it every day!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT product, BAD price.
Thie armband is a wonderful THEFT DETERRANT. Though velcro, is a safer bet than the eprovided ipod clip.

Putting on and taking off the arm band is just involved enough to prevent theft or loss. Before a theft could be completed, it would be noticed by the wearer.

But, the amazon price is bad. Go to comp usa or microcenter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have exercise accessory
If you plan on using your iPod Mini while exercising, you need to get this great arm band! The velcro closer holds tight (but not too tight) and doesn't slip while you are jumping around or running on the treadmill. It fits so nicely on my arm that I often forget I'm even wearing it.

People have complained about the price, but this was a thirty bucks well spent for me. I don't leave home without it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but expensive.
I found the armband very convienient and comfortable. I even threw it in the wash a couple times (note: I have a front loading wash machine--gentler on clothes.) It compliments the Ipod very nicely and slides onto the Ipod very slick-like. As other have mentioned, it is pricey. That's why I gave it 4 stars.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very convenient
Nice quality device, velcro with high quality leather band. Price is a bit steep but worth it. When I exercise it's not convenient to hold my ipod the whole time, I need the arm band so it becomes like a part of me. Unlike some, I don't have time to 'make my own' and there are no armbands which fit ipods in particular, so this is the only option. Good thing the quality doesn't suffer.-Andre G Clovers ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This connects an I-POD to a PC's USB Port 1.0 or 2.0
I get an IPod from someone. It's cable doesn't fit my USB port on my PC. I found out it came with a fire-wire cable. I searched for fire-wire to USB cable changer, but I found they don't exist. I saw this (Apple iPod Dock Connector-to-FireWire-and-USB 2.0 Cable), but I thought you had to have an I-Pod Dock and I didn't know what it was. Well, the Dock Connector refers to the port on the bottom of all I-Pods. You plug the "dock" connector to the bottom of your I-Pod (it's dock), and now you can plug the USB cable to your PC's USB port, whether you have 1.0 or 2.0 (2.0 is just faster). Also, now you take the extra fire-wire cable and plug it to your charger, so you can keep charging while your using your I-Pod on your PC. The alternative is buying a fire wire card and installing it in your PC, a little more expensive, a litte more work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised
I use this to hook my new iPod up to my USB 2.0 PCI card. This can only be used with the new iPod, as it uses the Dock Connector. My thoughts:

USB 2.0 worked relatively well. A few things that users should know: USB 2.0 shares bandwidth with all devices that are using the master hub. Therefore, the more you have hooked up, the slower the speed for each device is. I happen to just be using the iPod with my USB 2.0 PCI card. Another note: the iPod cannot take full advantage of USB 2.0. The iPod can only handle the 400 Mbps data transfer rate that FireWire supplies. The extra 80 Mbps does not make a difference in this situation.

Using this cable initially for my iPod (my computer's OS is Windows XP), I found the installation painless, and it works as advertised.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Straightforward to Use, but Great Anyway
Basically, most people don't have a Mac computer, so most people only have USB connectors on their computers. So go to TARGET and get this Dock Connector for $14.95. It works great for USB ports, and the great Apple interface makes updates a breeze. Overall, great product for computers other than Macs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fuctional
I was surprised by the fact that the USB cable wasn't included with my iPod, I was disappointed when I first got my iPod and wanted to put songs on it. It needs to be clearer that this cable is necessary for Windows users without FireWire ports. Also, if you look at the information on iPod on apple.com, it makes it sound like the dock is also a necessary purchase for a Windows, when it actually isn't. This product works fine, no flaws after almost a year of owning an iPod.

5-0 out of 5 stars the only choice for most
the cold hard facts today are that most people do not have a MAC computer. its also a fact that most computers have USB ports, not fire wire. You have two alternitives: a fire wire card for around 40 dollars, or this cable for around 20 dollars, you make the choice. if your like me, the only thing you would use the fire wire card for would be your iPod, which to me seems like a waste of 20 bucks, but if you have a lot of fire wire appliances, then you may wanna pick up the card. For any other reason than that, this cable is the only solution.
On the upside, you can dowload music on to the iPod and have it plugged into a power outlet at the same time so your iPod doesnt run out of batteries half way through downloading, thus cancelling your download. This isnt such a big problem for MAC users, since the iPod actually charges while downloading, but for windows users, most of us, it sucks the batteries dry when downloading. This cord is almost a given necasity for PC users, inless you want to waste 20 bucks! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Come on!
They say it is soo easy to dock the Ipod mini. WRONG! My Ipod mini got scratched, so thats when I decided to put the skintight cover on, to cover it up. Then I got a regular Ipod dock, and thanks to the cover my Ipod mini fit perfectly, and not only was it cheaper, I got the same things that the mini dock could do.

2-0 out of 5 stars No Cables !!! (useless?)
Hi
I ordered this along with my Ipod Mini (which is back ordered), I'm very suprised and disapointed that this is just a little piece of plastic with 2 connectors: I was (wrongly...) assuming that ordering this meant I could have 1 connection at work and another at home... it is actually not useful on its own...

1-0 out of 5 stars Dock your mini without the scratches!
As has been pointed out on message boards, you don't need the mini dock to dock your mini! The standard iPod dock works just fine. If you put the belt clip that came with your mini on it upside down, you can use it to brace the back of your mini and it stands up fine in the larger dock. The larger dock is also cheaper!

1-0 out of 5 stars No Good Use
There is no good use to this. If you want to connect your iPod to your home stereo system, just use a FM transmitter. They actullaly work better! And all this does is scrtach up the front and ruin your precious iPod mini.

4-0 out of 5 stars Necessary evil
As another reviewer noted, the dock is necessary to play your music through a stereo. The dock provides the required 'line out' function to hook to your reciever. It also serves as a cradle for charging the iPod. A fm transmitter will also allow you to play the ipod through the stereo reciever, but what you get is radio sounding tunes instead of stereo quality.
Another reviewer said the dock stratches the front of the ipod. I haven't yet had this trauma, and would probably cry if it were to happen. I push my ipod in at an angle, and it seems to avoid that nasty problem.
My only complaint is that for what you have to pay for an ipod, it should be included and not a separate extra. Docks are included with ipods over 15 gigs, so why do the little guys have to pay more? ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sure, why not

4-0 out of 5 stars ??
Why on earth would anyone buy applecare from amazon.com? I mean, really, come on.

2-0 out of 5 stars Question is, who serves who?
Be prepared to hear Apple's Service Representative tell you that, "Amazon is not an authorized reseller" and that you must fax them a copy of your sales/shipping document, and also fax them a copy of the enrollment number of the service plan along with its bar code (which is on one of the sheets of paper inside the "protection plan" package).

If you have a fax machine at your fingertips, I guess this isn't a really big deal, but if you don't, and if you are handicapped and can only walk with great difficulty, you might decide the whole thing really isn't worth the hassle.

Also be prepared to read your iPods serial number which is indistinctly, dimly, and microscopically etched into the backside of your machine. My tired, old eyes required my best magnifying glass with intense light to make it out, and even then I managed to mistake 2 Qs for Os on my first attempt.

On my first request for service I found the iPod representative to be pleasant enough, even affable; but, upon reflection I realized that other than to recite the things I must FAX to them, she hadn't so much as given me the time of day, let alone an answer to the question I had asked her.

2-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, limited coverage
Considering that this policy only extends the warranty for one year, it is expensive. Coverage for the iPod's biggest problem, its battery, is vague. Apple simply defines as non-defects some apparent battery problems, such as the fact that the battery drains very rapidly when the unit is not in use and turned off. Plus, the battery can drop drastically in usage time, and Apple protects itself by saying this: "Service coverage is available ... for battery depletion of 50 percent or more from original specification." What other company clearly states that precipitous product failure is not covered by either the original or extended warranty?

5-0 out of 5 stars For just Pennies a day....Peace of Mind!
The iPod and iTunes redefine what digital music should be: great audio on a superlight device with stunning design, fast download speeds, and ample storage for your music collection. Now, with the AppleCare Protection Plan for iPod, you can be sure that your music will play on.

AppleCare representatives can help troubleshoot your iPod and its connection with iTunes.

Apple offers the same complete service for both Mac and Windows users.

Investment protection
Every iPod comes standard with 90 days of phone support and one year of hardware service coverage. The AppleCare Protection Plan extends your service and support coverage for your iPod, its included accessories, and iTunes to up to two years from the original purchase date of your iPod.With this plan, you get direct access to Apple experts for answers by phone and anytime access to web-based resources. If your iPod or the included accessories should need service, Apple-certified technicians will repair it or provide a replacement using genuine Apple parts.

It's recommended that you purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan with your new iPod to take maximum advantage of the coverage the plan provides. This comprehensive plan is available for all iPod models, within their one-year limited warranty, that connect to either Macintosh computers or Windows PCs.

Peace of mind at home or on the road
