Good screen, good features, VERY thin and light, and better input methods and syncing than any Palm. Having the choice of transcriber, block input (i.e., Graffiti), character recognition, and keyboard for different situations is great. Pocket Word and Excel are included, as is Reader (load in a few books - it's great for boring staff meetings or waiting in line at the store). Programs like Notes, Tasks, and Calendar all have better functionality than their Palm counterparts. And these days, you just can't beat the price. Well, that's not true. Yes you can, with Dell's new PDAs. But those things look like bricks, compared to the Toshiba. For me, Toshiba's slim design was very important. Issues include a low expandability (only 1 SD slot) and a relatively slow 300 MHz proc - slow as in it's not 400 Mhz, mind you; it's still plenty fast for everyday use. Plus, it's less stable than the Palm OS. As a comparison, I had to restart my old Palm maybe once or twice in the year that I used it. This Pocket PC, I have to restart about once a week. It's somewhat annoying, but I find it an acceptable trade-off for the better features.

The way you get the VCR to record, or stop recording, isn't completely intuitive to me, and the programming options are minimal. It doesn't rewind tapes too fast either. The good thing is, you can record a TV program while watching a DVD. The DVD player, however, is even worse--it takes forever to load a disc, move between chapters, etc. and it's very finicky about disc condition, sometimes refusing to load/play ones at all when my Pioneer unit in the living room doesn't even flinch. Although it does have the desirable side-mounted speakers, there's only one on each side and they're a paltry 1.5 watts each, hardly adequate for DVD soundtracks or playing music CDs. But, at least is has digital audio output if you want to use an external amp and speakers. The remote glows nicely if you've left it in direct light, doesn't have awkward buttons at the very bottom, and you can use many of the buttons by feel, however, a lot of them are same-sized and in a perfect grid pattern, and while the button glows the labels do not, so in the dark they really all look the same. The on-screen menus aren't the best I've seen either. Overall though, I'm pretty happy with this product except for the slow and finicky DVD player. The flat screen does provide a good picture, and the speakers aren't too bad for low-volume listening. It's certainly nice to only have one remote for three devices, and which can actually control all the features. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description The player holds up to five discs, and you can set it to play them randomly. It'll play back songs randomly among each CD sequentially, or randomly among all the discs loaded at one time. The carousel tray allows access to load and unload discs while one is in play, so you'll never have to interrupt the music. The SD6915 has playback options galore. Along with the aforementioned DVD-Audio and Super Audio CDs, you can play CD-R and CD-RW discs loaded with your music in either WMA or MP3 files, homemade DVD-Rs, and, of course, DVD-Video discs. You can even use it as a JPEG viewer to display digital photographs on a television set in the JPEG digital format. Just pop in a CD-R/RW with your favorite photos and start the show. Want to get a better look at something on the screen? Use the Digital Picture Zoom to select an area of the picture you want to magnify. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces superior color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. You can also expand letterboxed films to increase the viewable area onscreen. Video isn't the only thing to benefit from this player. The SD6915 has a 5.1-channel output with Bass Management for onboard decoding of Dolby Digital, DVD-Audio, and SACD content with control of independent channel parameters (speaker size, delay time, etc.), including control for bass reproduction. Use this feature to customize the player's multichannel audio output to your particular home theater system. Coaxial and optical TosLink Dolby Digital and DTS surround-sound outputs are also available. These use a single RCA-type or optical output jack to send signature multichannel audio to an audio/video receiver with a compatible input. What's in the Box Features Reviews (1)
It won't turn on if it's set to output in progressive scan. It has annoying 1/4 second audio drops if you watch a DTS movie. It's response time to buttons pushed on the panel or remote is miserable. Product Description Features Reviews (2)
Then this system came along. My initial budget was $1,200 (About $500 for the receiver and the rest for speakers.) The Toshiba SD-V55HT is an out-of-the box home theater system packed with features to free up my shelf and upgrade my audio life. Priced at less than $300, this was an easy buy. I have had the system now for 2 months and I'm very happy with it. The system comes with a VCR and DVD player and stereo receiver housed in one unit. The receiver has 5 different sound modes including Dolby Prologic II, Movie, Music, Matrix and 3-D Surround. In addition, there is also By-Pass which determines the type of audio is being received and handles it accordingly. It has one additional input in the back for my Xbox and another in front for the occasion when I want to hook up my video camera which I haven't tried yet. The speakers are lightweight. At 60w each for the 3 front speakers and 2 rear speakers and 100w for the subwoofer, this system is ideal for a small room which I have. The setup was a breeze. This is "stereos for dummies". Each of the speakers is color coded with a matching speaker wire. The manual helps you figure out how to get everything in the right place. The trickiest part is probably was getting my TV and cable box wired up properly, but essentially, its standard fare. Once you are up and running, you can run the setup to tell the system where the speakers are to optimize the audio experience. The system is silver and black with nice lines. The bookshelf speakers are short and small. It fits in well in my messy sun room without standing out. The big win is the addition of a DVD player, MP3/CD player and a VCR in one unit. Everything plays great. I have no complaints about the sound but I upgraded from my television speakers. The remote is fairly familiar to handle the VCR, DVD player, MP3/CD player and radio. But you can't give up your other remotes. It doesn't handle the television or the cable box. This is really a bother since my TV is also a Toshiba. The MP3 screen display unfortunately doesn't make good use of the space. The left half of the screen displays the track and navigates folders fine enough. The right have is reserved for manually assembling a play list which I will likely never do.I would have rather liked to see a full-screen with each track well displayed and this split screen only when I decide to build a play list. The presets for the radio are a bit tricky. Each slot can hold an AM and FM station. This gets confusing when you switch to the radio and the wrong station comes up. I would have preferred that each slot is configured for one station and either AM or FM. A minor nit. This plug-n-play system came with a DVD player, a CD and MP3 player, a VCR, AM/FM, cable and two other inputs. No doubt about it, at $299 this is a great price. Comparable systems lacked a DVD player, MP3 player or the VCR for the same price or more. One day, I am may still upgrade to the system of my dreams, but this is a nice step in the right direction. Pros: Packed with features and well worth the price. Cons: AM/FM seems like a poor add-on. Bottom Line: Boat-load of features for a great price for a small room. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material. As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 30HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail. Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them. Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver. The set's stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices). HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements. What's in the Box Features

Amazon.com Product Description Toshiba's SD-H400 digital media server offers the convenience of no-fee PVR service with the option for immediate upgrades alongside high-quality, progressive-scan DVD-Video playback--all from a single, easy-to-use component. The SD-H400 houses an 80 GB TiVo Series2 PVR that comes with TiVo Basic service, providing free, limited TiVo features right out of the box, with no subscription fees. TiVo Basic service offers the ability to control live TV through features like pause, fast forward, rewind, and slow motion playback of live television; three days of electronic program guide; and manual recording capability by time and channel. The SD-H400 is the first device to offer TiVo Basic service. The SD-H400's DVD-video section is equipped with a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter for maximum color purity, detail, and resolution. When connected to a television via the unit's ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, you'll be ready to enjoy Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive technology with either DVDs or TiVo PVR playback. The SD-H400 can also play formats such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, video CD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CDs. Because the SD-H400 is built on TiVo Series2 technology, you have the ability to upgrade to full TiVo service to enjoy features such as Season Pass (the ability to record every episode of a program no matter when it airs, automatically), WishList (which finds and records programs that feature your favorite actor, director, or genre), Search by Title (which helps you find any show when all you know is its title), 14 days of program guide data, richer recording options, and an easy-to-use scheduling interface. (Full TiVo service costs $12.95 a month or $299 for a lifetime subscription; visit www.TiVo.com for detailed information.) Another upgrade available to the Toshiba SD-H400 is the TiVo Home Media Option, a premium package of networked home entertainment. This configuration takes full advantage of the SD-H400's capabilities as a digital media server. The Home Media Option--an upgrade available via phone or broadband connection--lets you use the SD-H400's USB port to connect the SD-H400 to your wired or wireless home network and PC. The Home Media Option adds the following features to the SD-H400: streaming MP3 files and digital photo viewing from a PC or Macintosh for playback through your TV or home-entertainment system, remote scheduling (through which you can schedule TiVo recordings from anywhere you can access the Internet), and connection to another TiVo Series2 PVR within your home (so you can share programs between the two units--for, say, viewing a program in the bedroom that was recorded in the family room, and vice versa). The Tivo interface on this machine is the best feature -- Tivo Service rocks. One note is that this one comes with Tivo Basic -- a limited (but still good) version of the service. You get a 45 day free trial of Tivo Plus (the regular Tivo service). The Tivo unit is just a Tivo Series 2, 80 hour unit. I'd like to point out that the network issues in the reviews of this machine is not unique to this one. It's a problem with all Tivos. This machine supports several USB network adapters, including the Microsoft MN510, which is still available in stores (most of the supported adapters aren't available anymore). The DVD player is excellent -- great picture quality. It also plays MP3, which is a handy feature if you have the machine hooked up to a stereo.
I didn't really need another DVD player at home (we already have 5 other stand-alone DVD players), but if that's the only way to get TiVo Basic service, so be it. Plus, the price I paid for this Toshiba (no rebate) is only (a bit) more than a stand-alone Series 2 TiVo (after rebate). For (the money), I got a progressive-scan DVD player, progressive output for TiVo, AND free life-time subscription to TiVo Basic service. What a bargain. TiVo Basic Service: One feature I don't get with the Basic service is the show search feature. However, we got the TiVo to help with managing the shows that we KNOW we want to watch. With young children, we really don't have time to watch the programs that we didn't want to watch in the first place but are suggested to us. So I won't miss that feature. For new movies we have had Netflix 4-disc service since 2000. You can always navigate using the program guide to set up recording if you want to watch something. If you visit TiVo forums such as tivocommunity.com, you'll see that other TiVo owners complaining about the fact that you can no longer use TiVo Series 2 for anything, including manual recording, without paying the (monthly) fee. With the Toshiba SD-H400, not only you can use it for manual recording, you have a 3-day program guide available to you over the phone or wireless network. If the Plus features are important to you, then you can always upgrade to the full TiVo feature for the same fee as a stand-alone Series 2. It goes without saying that we have no intention of upgrading. To get program guide via wireless network: To record one channel while watching another: Any cons? Wireless adapter: Since the TiVo software it comes with is version 5.1.1, it does not support the newer versions of the Linksys USB wireless adapter (I got a v. 2.8). You will need a landline to download a new TiVo software to upgrade to version 5.1.1b for the Toshiba to recognize your network adapter. Video extraction or copying: Like the stand-alone TiVo Series 2, there is no easy way of extracting the recorded video from the Toshiba device without opening it up (voiding the warranty) and load some files onto the base Linux operating system. The only other way is to video capture (analog cable to digital to analog to digital again) it back into a PC. Not the most elegant solution. Upgrade: according to TiVo specialists at Weaknees, it's not simple to upgrade the HD on the Toshiba. You can replace the 80G HD with a larger one, but it will not see beyond the first 80G. Weaknees is working on a solution.
For those who would like to simplfy their electronic gadgets for their TV, this is an excellent product. I was able to free up a DVD player for another TV in the house.
I love the unit, and once you get used to it, the Tivo service is really great. However, after a mere seven weeks of use the Live TV function would "lock up". After powering off the unit, doing resets, and reformatting the hard drive, the unit would still lock up on a single frame every 2-3 hours of use. Toshiba Customer Service wasn't much help -- just told me to do a reset. I was able to finally get a replacement unit, but it took a lot of effort. Great idea and cool features, but the reliability of the SD-H400 is suspect in my mind.
I also like the fact that I can connect this to just one component input on my TV and both the TIVO and DVD work fine. As for noise, I don't hear it at all. DVD plays virtually every type disk I tried, including DVD+RW. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description The set's built-in DVD player is compatible with DVD-Video, DVD-R, DVD-RW, VCD, audio CD, and recordable CDs filled with JPEG digital photos or MP3/WMA audio files. LCD screens offer a number of benefits over CRT monitors and televisions, including general ease of use, long screen life with no risk of image burn-in, and space savings. This 1,366 x 768-resolution set boasts not only 2 ColorStream HD high-definition (up to 720p) component-video inputs, but also a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) for a direct digital connection with an HD set-top box or HD satellite receiver (sold separately). HD Dynamic Contrast increases contrast and color saturation to create deep, rich images. The intelligent circuitry analyzes both the dark and bright areas of the picture, separately optimizing the dynamic range in each area. Picture enhancements include luminance transient improvement, green enhancement, and blue stretch. This circuit is only active in sports mode and works with all inputs. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals. I've been hoping that Microsoft and its partners would get networking right some day. The Toshiba e740 looked like it might be the answer. With its built-in WiFi wireless network adapter, it appeared that the e740 at least would provide useful local area network connectivity. However, like most WiFi devices, the e740's range is too short and the battery drain is too high. Oh, well, how about wide area networking with a wireless modem? I was able to find one wireless modem that would plug into the e740's compact flash slot. This modem, its name escapes me, adds 5 inches to the e740's almost 5 inches and costs an arm and two legs in monthly fees. With the modem in place, the e740 takes on the form factor of a clamshell handheld Windows CE PC. Forget that. I'm trying to replace a Blackberry wireless e-mail device. I'm now looking at Handspring's Treo 300. It's got everything that the Blackberry delivers including size plus it's a wireless phone, has a color screen and supports web browsing. Wireless networking is part of your phone service and the cost for wireless phone and networking (from Sprint) is about the same as I'm now paying for separate wireless phone and Blackberry wireless e-mail. For the record, I'm an IT consultant and author specializing in electronic communications. The latest edition of my book "Mastering Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server" (Sybex), is available from Amazon.com.
Check out those built-in slots for memory cards on the e740. The Compaq requires a bulky "expansion sleeve" (which effectively doubles the width of it) to read the memory cards I use in my Canon digital camera - the Toshiba does not as the proper MMC slots are built-in. Wireless is a big factor too. Compaq has "Bluetooth" wireless capability, but for me it was completely useless since I don't have any Bluetooth-compliant printers, etc. The Wi-Fi Wireless in the Toshiba allows me to leverage our Apple Airport network - ten minutes after the thing charged up I could surf the web wirelessly from anywhere in my home. I can't stress how cool this really is when you just want to check news headlines, etc. and not have to deal with the hassles of booting a laptop. Battery life on the e740 is about the same as the Compaq (I play a lot of MP3's), but the Compaq did sound louder on my Sennheiser headphones. My only complaint with the e740 is its design; cosmetically the device looks positively 1999, particularly with its round chrome operational button. The e740's features place it way high on a usability scale, which makes it this author's choice of Pocket PC's available today. I have heard that the next generation of wireless PDAs from all manufacturers will either feature Wi-Fi or wireless phone capabilities, so you may want to just wait four more months and see what the future brings, but if you must have a Pocket PC today then this one should suit your needs very well.
Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations - Toshiba
