Amazon.com Product Description

Some consumers don't mind paying a little extra for the privilege of owning the absolute latest state-of-the-art gear. For the rest of us, there's the Compaq Presario 6016US desktop. Fast and powerful, while just a notch or two removed from the cutting edge, the Presario 6016US is an affordable yet proficient machine that should handle all but the most demanding applications.

For the Presario 6016US, Compaq has selected a 1.53 GHz AMD Athlon XP processor with 256 KB of Level 2 cache. This speedy CPU is the brains of a capable processing engine that also features 512 MB of fast DDR DRAM (expandable to 1 GB) and an integrated 32 MB nVidia GeForce2 chip. The system bus speed is a reasonable 266 MHz. In plain English, the Presario 6016US is ready to run virtually any application currently on the market, although ardent gamers or animators may want to add a faster graphics card at a later date.

Sporting a respectable 60 GB hard disk, the unit offers plenty of onboard storage space for all your programs and files. It also features a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for your smaller applications and a 24x (write) CD-RW drive through which you can record and play audio CDs and transfer and archive your data. Compaq has not included a monitor or speakers, allowing you to select such components separately or perhaps make use of your existing audio-video setup.

The Presario 6016US is packed with amenities to enhance your everyday computing, including six USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a serial port and parallel "printer" port, an integrated 56K modem for basic Internet and e-mail access, two free PCI slots for future expansion, and a scroll wheel mouse. The system's Compaq Internet keyboard features several one-touch buttons for convenientaccess to various Internet and multimedia functions.

To help get you started, Compaq has pre-installed a variety of software applications, including Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft Money 2002, Microsoft Works 6.0, Quicken Financial Center/Quicken New User Edition, Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe 2001, and plenty of Internet and multimedia tools and utilities. ... Amazon.com Product Description

HP has designed its Pavilion ze4430us Notebook PC to meet the needs of those who require satisfactory performance and wireless connectivity at an affordable price point. It won't efficiently drive the latest games or break any speed records, but the Pavilion ze4430us should suffice quite nicely for most typical mobile business and leisure applications.

At 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.62 inches, the unit is of average size. It is conveniently lightweight though, at a mere 7.25 pounds. Inside, HP has installed a capable yet cost-effective 1.8 GHz AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ processor with battery-conserving PowerNow Technology, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1024 MB), and an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory.

The system features an adequate 40 GB hard disk for file and application storage and a convenient DVD+CD-RW combo drive for listening to and burning music CDs, archiving data and playing the latest movies. DVD writing is not offered in this stock configuration. The system's crisp 15-inch XGA TFT display supports images of 1024x768 resolution, and its 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio chipset and integrated Altec Lansing-designed speakers deliver accurate, full-bodied sound.

Controlling the Pavilion ze4430us is a snap. The unit features a full-size 88-key keyboard with embedded numeric keypad, a Touch Pad with on/off button, and a dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad. Other amenities include two traditional USB 1.1 ports for plug and play peripherals (high-speed USB 2.0 ports are not included), an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for fast interaction with external devices such as digital camcorders, and an S-Video TV-out. Communication facilities include integrated 802.11 b wireless LAN, an RJ-45 Ethernet jack for fast "wired" network and Internet interaction, and a 56K modem for low-speed e-communication.

Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Corel Productivity Pack including WordPerfect 10 and Quattro Pro 10, and Intervideo's WinDVD DVD player. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Looks Like a Notebook, Acts Like a PC
As a (poor) IT Manager trying to make my first impressions, I was somewhat limited in the amount of money I could spend for a new work-related laptop. Fortunately, HP had the answer.

The ze4430us is listed as a value notebook, with not quite the speed of a Pentium 4, but with greater potential than the Celeron. After working with multiple 2.4ghz Pentium 4 processors, and after comparing the abilities of both, I will always consider an AMD for my chip needs. This laptop runs faster and multitasks office applications at a much faster rate than the 2.4ghz P4 this chip is aimed at (hence the 2400+ nomenclature). I was already impressed.

The RAM is on one chip for 512mb, instead of the industry standard of 2 256mb chips. While this might not seem too important, it means that to upgrade the RAM, you spend a lot less money, and you don't have to throw your valuable RAM away. Even with the 64mb that the ATI Radeon 4x AGP controller permanently allots to itself (this figure is adjustable), you have plenty to work with out of the box.

With a 15" display (only xvga), a touchpad that you can deactivate, integrated (if somewhat tinny) Altec Lansing speakers, and a dvd/cd-rw combo drive, this computer seems to have it all. Then we come to the integrated 54g wireless LAN card. Even the (overpriced) Centrino system only has b support (as of Feb 12, 2004). The increased speeds are extremely noticeable, expecially with a fast broadband connection.

For the money spend (an open box deal for under $1000), I could not ask for a better computer. Keep your Prescotts and Banions, Intel, I won't buy another laptop until AMD puts a 64 into a notebook.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great all around notebook!
I bought this notbook at Best Buy for $1049 if you account for the mail in rebates($200 worth). The first one I bought had a dead pixel, but I returned it to Best Buy a day later and they gave me a replacement no problem. The notebook seems to be great so far. I haven't got the TV Now button working, but the TV out through the Radeon driver options works flawlessly. I don't understand what the difference would be.

The notebook is even capable of running some games. I've tried Quake 3, which ran with no problem at all, although my PC image quality is better. Wireless networking works without a hitch. The button on the front of the laptop to toggle the wireless on/off is very nice for security risks. Battery seems to last a while. I recommend running the battery configuration program when you first get the laptop (do it at night cause it takes a while (about 8hrs)). Screen quality is great, very bright when plugged into AC power. At $1049, this thing seems to be a steal. I purchased the $250 extended warranty from Best Buy which covers you for 3 years. I think seeing that the first notebook had a bad pixel, the warranty is worth it. Will also cover you when your battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, which will inevitably(SP?) happen.

5-0 out of 5 stars good price/performance
Well, it was cheaper at BestBuy ($1100). This is a nice machine. Large screen. NO FLOPPY, but has a nice CD burner/DVD. The scrollpad on the touchpad is a nice "touch". The button to switch off the touch pad is thoughtful. Hardware supports XP hibernation mode, which is very nice. The RAM and CPU speed are appropriate for heavy multitasking, XP handles multiple windows/tasks just fine.
The builtin wireless is great. Only gripes : the speaker grille looks "cheap", the CPU fan exhaust looks like it'd let lots of dust into the inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful!
Very easy to use, although i wasn't the one to hook it up...works very well in wireless areas. i'm also amazed at how long it lasts without having to be charged (almost four hours!!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Great price for a comfortable laptop
Nice 15'' screen, decent RAM and Hard Drive amount, fast CPU... a great laptop at a very reasonable price. I'm coming from an Apple notebook and I'm definitely not going back. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Value for Right Buyer
Used 18 mos. without problems. Lightweight and compact for a 15" screen = easy travel/moving around house. Battery life average, occasional lock-ups due to ISP. Usage 50/50 wifi surfing vs. business(word/PP/excel). For someone with similar needs this computer is a 5 star great buy. Like any product it's only a great buy for the right applications. Lack of dedicated video ram, inexpensive video components, basic 256K ram, processor speed, 1024 screen make this a bad "2 star" fit/value for the wrong buyer. For business, surfing, carrying-around its great. Those with game, design, and video focus should look elsewhere.

2-0 out of 5 stars just say no
I have had this computer for over a year and I have had nothing but problems. It locks up the whole time I use it, it shuts down with no warning (and does not automatically save your work). It is nice that it has a wireless card slot, but can barely use it ~ the heat sinc gets to hot and shuts off the wireless card.

I am sure that there is more!

I would recommend this system!

2-0 out of 5 stars arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgg!!!
This computer locks up on me all the time!! Multiple- we're talking more than 5 on bad days- times a day. I don't know if it is just my computer that has a problem or what, but it is really frustrating. Today it has locked up over and over again. It has also happened (not today, but sometimes) that the computer will just turn itself off. Just like that. No goodbyes. No kiss on the cheek. Nothing. Kaput. I want to smash my computer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Cheap, light, 15" notebook, but with unimpressive components
There are not many 15" notebooks in this price range, but HP has achieved this by using second-class components. The 15" display is a low quality 1024x768 pixel display with a well over 45ms response time. A 15" LCD should have 1280x1024 pixels in order to provide a sharp image. You need at least a 25ms response time to avoid "trails" in games and other high frame rate applications. 1024x768 should be for 14" LCDs only.

Not that you could play newer games with the Via ProSavage graphics chipset. The now defunct S3 graphics company designed it years ago. Via bought up the graphics division, and is probably selling this ancient chipset for next to nothing. This is fine for card games but don't get your hopes too high.

At this price range you can get a 14" laptop with a superior graphics system, faster CPU, and faster memory (this computer is equipped with slower SDRAM not the twice as fast Double Data Rate SDRAM that is standard on 90% of the notebooks sold today). I suggest the HP xt125. Dell, and Gateway have good offerings in this price range as well.

On the good side you get a 15" screen very cheap, and the DVD drive is a little faster than most notebook offerings (16x vs. 8x). It is also very light for a 15" notebook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice for the money, but...
after a couple rebates, i effectively paid about [money] for this machine, and at the price, i'm not sure you can find a better box. part of me is wishing i'd blown another [money] for a beefier dell -- would've gotten a bigger hard drive than 20gb, a faster video card, s-video out, and stuff like that. but if you can live without the bells and whistles, this is a fine little machine.

out of the box, you get a 15" monitor, a dvd-cdrw drive, 256mb ram, and a 20gb hard drive. in words, it comes with pretty much everything you need to get started.

contrary to what a lot of people are saying, the computer is fast, particularly in floating point calculations. this may or may not be applicable to most users, but for me, i run mathematica, cubase, and logic predominantly, and the athlon is simply a better processor for these sorts of applications.

the video performance is really lacking. i didn't anticipate this would be a problem, but getting blocky dvd output can be annoying. it only happens occasionally, but when it does it's very irritating. and don't even think of playing any 3-d games on this; it will give you a grand three frames per second for most new titles. that is worse than bad.

essentially, you get what you pay for. hp skimps on the hard drive and video card, but the bottom line is that this is probably the cheapest laptop with a 15" screen out there. all told, if you can deal with its shortcomings, i would definitely recommend it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good computer for that not so on the road person.
The Goods:
DVD/CD player
External volume buttons
default DVD player
Easy access Internet buttons
Programable buttons for personal shortcuts on keyboard
The Bads:
Battery (4 hours if you just have it running on standby)
Video card is part of the mother board

Overall this is a great laptop. My main use for this computer (gameplaying, DVD watching, CD player) is probably not the ideal use for a laptop. But I believe you should be able to customize your computer the way you want it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars deployment ready pc
As a member of the armed forces I'm set to leave home for an extended period of time and I couldn't imagine leaving my beloved desktop behind. As a member of the armed forces I also couldn't imagine being able to aford an acceptable replacement that I could take with me. I shopped around for over a week and the HP ZE4145 was the best value I could find anywhere. It was the combination of price and features of the ZE4145 that convinced me that it would be worth buying a laptop. I ordered it while away on training and it was recived by my wife who is a computer novice. She managed to get it registered and running DVDs on our home TV via the s-video tv-out port. She even set it up for easy one-touch operation.

For me it will be a great source of entertainment while spending countless days away from home. I have accumulated a nice collection of DVDs in a short time,I already have several computer games to play, and a collection of hundreds of MP3s. All of which the ZE4145 can handle with ease. The LAN port allows me to network with my shipmates who also have notebooks. The 40gig HD give me pleanty of room to streach. The 15" screen is the envy of many other notebook owners onboard. The video card can be set to use up to 64MB of RAM and with 512MB you can manage to lose it.

I haven't had a single problem yet. I love my new notebook.

3-0 out of 5 stars A WELL-PACKAGED ALL-ROUNDER, BUT NOT A TOP-GUN
For sure, there is no questioning the fact that "HP Pavilion ze4145" is a good laptop PC; but I must add that at any price higher than the stated Amazon.com rebate price, it does not worth a second look. Yes, it came with an Athlon XP 1800, a 512MB DDR RAM, and a 40GB Hard Disk, but that is nothing extraordinary. Moreso, as we brace for 2003, both the 512MB DDR RAM and 40GB Hard Disk have become mainstream components for laptops. Some even parade 60GB Hard Disks!
In fact, anyone who is in touch with the component-versus-price fluctuations in the computer industry will not be impressed by this HP Notebook. Do not forget that its 'almighty' Athlon XP 1800 has a raw speed of 1.53GHz, which is nothing outstanding. And, before you scream that it is faster than a comparable Pentium 4; note that Pentium 4 CPUs come with built-in extended-instruction-sets, which enable them to run optimized software twice as fast as comparable Athlon CPUs would.
In conclusion, I would say that despite the fact that I regard this "HP Pavilion ze4145" as a good all-round PC, I still maintain that it is not by any means a top-gun: both in price and in build.

1-0 out of 5 stars The power supply exploded
In addition to numerous other problems that this laptop has had over the past year, its power supply just EXPLODED.

So not only does this laptop have shoddy hardware, it's a fire hazard.

4-0 out of 5 stars Still working after 3 montsh
I've been using this laptop regulary for 3 months now and wanted to give a report on how it's doing. The good: runs quiet and doesn't overheat, screen is still good, dvd playback is fantastic, relatively stable, burner still working (no coasters yet). The bad: hibernation doesn't work, the video card has a problem with direct x and is subpar for games (I have constant lock ups playing Half Life and video card isn't supported by newer games like America's Army), problems with the touchpad (it also feels flimsy). If you are a student like me, I'd definitely reccomend this laptop. It's got more than enough power to type a report, watch a dvd, or burn some music. Just don't count on being able to play games on it. If you get hp laptop, get one with an amd chip. It seems like the ones with pentiums have more problems and don't perform up to their specs from what I've read in the reviews here.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad Batteries / Bad Motherboards
I purchased my notebook computer in November of 2001. At the same time I purchased HP's [$$$] 'Support Pack' which extends the warranty to 3 years and guarantees a 3 day turn around time. Fed Ex picks it up and brings it back and HP picks up the shipping. I wasted my money
I have owned my computer for 12 months and it hasn't worked properly for 8 months. The battery will not fully charge. Sometimes it will charge to only 3%, sometimes to 70%. But it will not fully charge no matter how long you try to charge it.
I have performed numerous system calibrations and BIOS upgrades and I have sent it in for repair 3 times...This time they replaced the motherboard. The problem isn't fixed.
My computer still doesn't work...
Save yourself a huge headache. Buy a computer that works... ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good specs, bad Design
This notebook has great specs and features but the packaged shell is cheap and poorly designed. The keypad is not as smooth as Dell or Toshiba. One has to apply more force per keystroke that reminds me of old manual typewriters. The result is A LOT more typos - some keystrokes register, some don't.

This goes for all keys, touchpad, and switches.
The choices and placement of characters on keypad could be better. The placement of the non-alphabet keys are not intuitive. These Home, Page Up, Page Down, End, delete, Pause, Print Screen keys seem crammed into the upper right hand corner, very closely packed next to each other such that accidental mis-strikes are also common.
The screen is big, but that means loss of resolution. The XGA screen on my other notebook is smaller, but sharper than this HP Pavilion's XGA screen.
The wireless G card on this notebook seems to be weak because it keeps dropping connections. The wireless B on my other notebook seems to perform better - connections do not drop.
Finally, despite the width of the notebook, ports most often used are crammed next to each other. The power adapter plug is VERY snug against the USB ports. And for some strange reason, the USB ports are horizontally stacked so this makes for a tightly fitted trio of wires.
While the HP Pavilion has some desirable internal qualities, it's physical qualities are irksome. I would not recommend this notebook because it's poor design will always be a source of irritation. If I didn't own another notebook as a comparison, I'd never know the difference, but being the owner of a Toshiba and past user of Dell I have to say that HP's can use some improvement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best for the money
4 friends bought notebooks at the same time Dell, Sony, (2)Toshibas all of theirs had P4 chips, and this HP simply outclasses them- 3 my friends admitit! And they paid $500-$900 more! Their notebooks weigh a full pound more, they are thicker, and the P4's are much louder requiring a loud cooling fan.

The S video, Firewire, serial ports are awesome features. Made several videos already with the firewire. Screen resolution is beautiful! Graphics card is good- handles computer games well.
Best feature- touch pad w/scroll wheel. I'll never buy a notebook again without one.
Cons- Sound is average for notebooks (not like the new Mac power books). If it had USB 2 it would be my dream come true. Good Job HP- fantastic machine

5-0 out of 5 stars Very useful & economical notebook
This computer works terrific even with demanding applications like the music production tools I use. Altough it is not designed for that kind of work, the processor works pretty good and has enough RAM for almost any application.

I am happy with my purchase, no problems at all: silent, powerful & fast (not the best PC of course), not heavy, well made, clean screen, nice touchpad and keyboard, great connectivity (WiFi, VGA, Ethernet, USB, FireWire, you name it!) and super value. Bad points: a weird noise sometimes when reads CD's, and the speakers... well as a music professional I wasn't expecting much anyway from those tiny things; I use a PCMCIA pro audio card instead and works terrific.

3-0 out of 5 stars Adequate
I purchased this computer in November of 2003 from Amazon.com. I am not particularly hard on my computers. Since I've bought this computer, I've been extremely busy, and haven't had the free time to do much more than check my email. As a resuly, the computer has essentially been sitting on a desk since I've gotten it.

This Saturday, I had to send it in for a repair. The screen completely died. I've only had this computer for five months, and it isn't as though I've been hauling it around, abusing it, or even using it a whole lot. While I'm not saying this is a bad computer--after all, I've only tried this one--I feel obligated to post this problem. The computer has to be sent out to Texas; I'm in Illinois. I'm going to be without a computer for over a month. I like this computer--I really do. Aside from this, it's been a great little notebook. This incident, however, doesn't bode well for its reliability.

5-0 out of 5 stars First Laptop
This laptop is absolute dream. Previous reviews list this laptop to have a video card with "shared memory." What they mean is that it's an integrated video card. This is NOT true. The video card is not integrated. I am very satisfied with this laptop, installing the drivers from the windows update site actually took away from my display capabilities (use the drivers at hp.com). I have had no problems with the touchpad or the keyboard. Convenient and best of all: MOBILE ATHLON- It is a step-by-step processor and only allocates as much speed as required to perform tasks (conserves battery power). Played Unreal Tournament on this while my friend was on his HP Intel 4 laptop, mine lasted 25 more minutes on a full charge than his while running a very demanding game. Great computer, a must have. ... Read more

156. Averatec 3150HW Notebook PC (AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ with PowerNow,512 MB RAM, 30 GB Hard drive, DVD+CD-RW combo)
by AVERATEC

Asin: B00016WQTQ
Catlog: Personal Computer
Manufacturer: AVERATEC
Sales Rank: 344
Average Customer Review: 3 out of 5 stars
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan

Amazon.com Product Description

Extremely thin (10.6 by 9.6 by 1.2 inches) and very lightweight (a mere 4.3 pounds), Averatec's 3150 series of mobile computers are some of the smallest standard notebooks on the market. Though not exactly a power user's dream rig, this model, the Averatec 3150HW, is a smart option for those who require excellent portability and a fiscally sensible price point.

Powered by a trio of cost-effective components -- a 1.4 GHz AMD Athlon XP-M 1600+ processor (with PowerNow and QuantiSpeed technologies for improved battery life and faster data movement than previous AMD processors), 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory (double that of the marginally less expensive Averatec 3150P), and an integrated S3 ProSavage8 graphics controller with 32 MB of shared video memory, the Averatec 3150HW delivers midlevel computing prowess. Users can expect solid performance for standard 2-D tasks such as word processing, spreadsheets, Internet surfing, contact management, and basic drawing. However, sophisticated business applications and complex multitasking will likely tax the system's capabilities. Furthermore, the unit's graphics engine will not effectively handle mid- to high-end 3-D gaming or animation.

The Averatec 3150HW features an adequate 30 GB hard disk on which to store your important data, and a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. You'll monitor your activities on a 12.1-inch XGA TFT display capable of sharp 1024 by 7678 resolutions, and listen to your tunes via built-in stereo speakers.

For such a small and affordable notebook, the Averatec 3150HW is very well connected. Communication options include integrated 10/100 Mbit LAN for fast networking and Internet access, a 56K modem for slower dial-up environments and 802.11b wireless for those times when you can't plug in. Other important amenities include three fast USB 2.0 ports for data streaming with external devices such as scanners and digital cameras, a Type II PC Card CardBus slot, and an 85-key full-sized keyboard. An IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for swapping data with digital camcorders) is not included.

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition heads up the preinstalled software bundle, which also features Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package and a DVD playback utility. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3-plus hours with the enclosed Smart Li-ion cell. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid Averatec
I bought an Averatec 3150H notebook in January. The first one had defective battery and I returned it. The replacement had problems with screen, I sent it in for repairs and it's now been in their repair shop for over two months waiting for parts. Averatec product quality is inferior and their service is non-existent. Don't waste your money on this brand.

4-0 out of 5 stars small, light and works well
Had many features I wanted; however, wish it came with XP Professional and a little larger HD (40- 80 Gig). works well; runs a little hot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for money!
I wasn't familiar with the brandname, but took a chance after reading all the positive reviews on CNET. I bought this laptop because it was light (about two-thirds the size of most laptops) and affordable (almost half the price of laptops similar in size and functionality). Plus, on a frivolous note, it's sleek and stylish.

I should mention there are some drawbacks. The keyboard layout is a bit awkward; the space key is very short and the placement of the Ctrl, Fn and Del keys are not standard. The computer has a tendency to run hot and when the fan kicks it, it's quite noisy. There's no firewire port. The battery only lasts about 2.5 to 3 hours. (Incidentally, regardless of what kind of laptop you buy, it's important to look after the battery properly. Li-ion batteries will lose effectiveness if they are overcharged or left in full charge without use.)

Those are fairly minor complaints, though. Overall, I'm very pleased with this laptop. I've had it for a month now, and it's been a real joy to use. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Does it all for great price !
Got this notebook a couple weeks ago from HP's Refurbished products. Paid less than $800 including delivery. This notebook has everything I need including a CD Burner, DVD Player, 1394 port, large/fast 30GB HD, and built in ethernet. The keyboard is great, especially the scroll device below the touchpad. As far as the CTRL key being in the wrong place, it's easily adjusted to - can't understand why anyone would make a big stink about it.

The performance seems to be very fast including digital picture editing. I haven't done any video editing yet so I can't comment on that. The display is more than adequate and seems very bright to me.

My only beef with it is all of the software Compaq preloads on it. Can't say that I wanted or use any of it.

For the $$$, I'd buy another in a heartbeat !

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Combination
The 910 US combination by Compaq gives you almost all the power you need for most users. Ergonomic and sleek design, almost 6.5 lb. weight with one battery makes it a good elegant choice which will look good on your desk as well feels lighter on your pocket.

3-0 out of 5 stars 910US - Great value notebook with a bad keyboard design
This is a really solid low-end value notebook. Everything is perfect... EXCEPT the amazing fact that Compaq decided to place the rarely used "Fn" function key in the lower left-hand corner of the keyboard. This key is located exactly where the Ctrl key belongs. I absolutely guarantee that any experienced user will accidentally press this "Fn" key every single time that they attempt to press the Ctrl key. This is beyond frustrating. This design defect alone is sufficient reason to pay few hundred dollars more for some other brand.

The annoying "Fn" key is supplemented by an extra large Caps Lock key. Wow. yOU WILL BE TORMENTED BY ACCIDENTALLY PRESSING THIS CAPS LOCK KEY ON A REGULAR BASIS.

Other than these issues with the keyboard, this is probably the best notebook available for [the money]. Most people focus on the CPU speed when comparison shopping for notebooks. In reality, extra memory and hard disk space is the more beneficial element to be looking for. 256MB and 30 GB make this Presario superior to most competitors.

Tough call... A great notebook with a bad keyboard design.

4-0 out of 5 stars The 905, avec CD burner.
To begin with, it looks great. It's black & silver, sleek & reasonably svelte at 6.5 lbs. The HP genes are apparent in its design and the result is pleasing. The CPU is an adequate 1.33 Athalon XP; it's quite capable of most daily, non-graphics intense tasks, but not as good as an Intel P4. System memory also just adequate at 256 megs, though this can be doubled easily enough. The hard drive is a generous 30 gigs. A DVD/CD-R/W combination drive in included. All the Compaq's connections are in the right place, though missing is any USB 2.0 port. The video card is in line with the other components, with a 16 meg ATI card onboard driving a very sharp 14.1" active matrix display. (I am a fan of ATI graphics cards because they have been quite reliable over the long haul and because upgrading them from ATI's nice website is a snap) Overall, this is a good, basic machine made by a company that looks like it's here to stay. ... The integrated sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio).

4-0 out of 5 stars Dandy Little Computer
I ran into many initial problems with this computer. It would freeze sporadically as well as consistently under certain circumstances. For instance, I could not use the sound card while dialing into the Internet. When I say freeze, I mean it totally freezes. No errors, but the display won't update, neither the keyboard or mouse functions, sound ceases, etc. Have to turn it off and back on. The initial reaction I have is the motherboard is bad. After all, I had bought it open-box at a local retain store, and so it must have been returned for the same reason, right?

So I go to return it, describe the problems, and wouldn't you know it, it works fine, even through the modem-sound conflict. I was told the problems I was encountering are because "Office 97 and Windows XP Home aren't compatible." I've been computing for 14 years, programming for 6, and know that's not the problem. I'm told to run System Restore (heard that before, heh) and that of course doesn't improve things any. Therefore, matters were taken into my own hands.

XP is taken off. Windows 2000 [Pro] is the OS for people like me. Buy it before MS removes it from the market place ($... on Amazon, provided you have a relatively recent version of Windows), it's the best version of Windows Microsoft has ever made, as far as I'm concerned. I won't go into details of other software, as it's irrelevant. As I could afford it, other changes followed. The onboard video [is weak], so an AGP Radeon 7000 (64MB) (Sixty-four bucks here on Amazon, you can't go wrong) found its way into the system. Next, another 256 MB of PC133 RAM for forty-bucks came in. There were other upgrades, but these two brought performance up to par with a similarly configured P4-1.8 GHz system. The Athlon wins at some things, the P4 at others.

I wouldn't recommend a system like this to just anybody. Most of these upgrades (not my choices particularly, but _something_) are really necessary for this system to perform. Moreover, most users wouldn't be comfortable performing them.

The other big limitation is the lack of expandability. It has 3 PCI slots and 1 AGP. There's only 1 free drive bay. I maxed out all the internal expansion opportunities to a point where I had to remove the modem and rely on Internet access shared by another computer. The system also has a limit of 512 MB RAM.

As for my problem with the system freezing, it declined significantly in moving from Windows XP to Windows 2000, and further when I began using the "Hibernate" feature in Windows. I won't go into details of how Hibernate works, but if I can boot my system faster and it's more reliable, well, where's the down side?

2-0 out of 5 stars If you get one that works it would be a good deal
I had my reservations about buying an eMachine, they have a terrible reputation for both quality and customer service. Unfortunately, I went against my better judgement and decided to buy the T1400. It seems like a good PC for the money and it is as long as there are no problems. Within a month ours started to randomly reset without warning, it didn't matter what you were doinf it would just reset. I called eMachines and they sent out a new power supply (apparently a bad power supply is a common problem with eMachines...). After the new power supply was installed the same problems started again, the resetting has become worse and we have progressed to the point where it will turn off and won't restart for at least 30 minutes. Emachines will repair it under their warranty but I have been told it would take anywhere between 5 weeks (the eMachine estimate) to at least 10 weeks (employees at both Circuit City and CompUSA told me to expect a long wait of at least ten weeks...). Now I will not have a PC for at least five weeks... I think I'll send it in for repairs and sell it when it comes back. I'll never again buy an eMachine, don't trust anyone who tells you they're better than their past reputation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great PC
Ive had this pc since april and it has worked great- good value for the money- but of course you have to buy many other things to go with it. But its great value , its fast performance and ive had no complaints with it since purchase. It has dvd/cd rom -256 mb, 80 cb, and has a great look to it. This one shown is blue but mine came in Black/Silver color. Very nice/highly recomended. Worth Money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Old news
This system cost as much as much faster systems. Why pay the money for a 1.8GHz CPU when you can have a 2.4GHz CPU? Maybe this was a good deal last year but it's out of date now.

5-0 out of 5 stars MORE BANG FOR THE BUCK
I looked at several computers in this price range and this system for the money was the best. The fast speed of the AMD 1.8Ghz processor is great and with all of the software and expandibility this system simply can't be beat.Plays DVD'sand burns CD's flawlessly. My friend paid twice as much for another system and this Compaq(HP)package not only outperforms his but comes with more features. Highly recommend it. ... Read more
