The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The massive 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos, and MP3 collection.
  • Processor: The 2.16 GHz AMD Athlon XP 3000+ processor offers a high level of performance that's equivalent to a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor--speedy enough for PC gaming, graphic design software, and multimedia creation. It also features a 333 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a 512 KB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The S6500NX comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (1 x 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1 GB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: This desktop PC comes with two optical drives: a CD-RW and a DVD+RW (for writing data and video files from your camcorder to discs). The speedy CD-RW drive has 48x write, 24x re-write, 48x read speeds, while the DVD+RW drive has 4x write, 2.4x rewrite, and 8x playback speeds (DVD movie discs require 8x). It's compatible with the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The S6500NX comes with a Compaq Productivity keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Sound and Graphics
The S6500NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board. The sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The video/graphics card--Intel Extreme 3-D Graphics--has up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for good range of gaming graphics and multimedia video playback, but might not stack up for ultra-realistic 3-D PC games.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the S6500NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), three 3.5-inch bays (one available), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP2 slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 8 USB 2.0 ports (2 in front, 6 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)

2-0 out of 5 stars Some major issues . . .
This desktop computer does not have one of the faster processors available, but there are other more pressing major problems with the system.

The OS is Windows XP Home Edition, with a 90-day trial version of MS Works 7.0. This means that after the 90 day period, you have go out and buy a copy of Microsoft Office. Compaq's decision to load "trial version" software is pure idiocy! After the trial period is over, you're totally helpless, and can't even save a document. A major inconvenience to say the least. The fact that trial software is loaded should be prominently disclosed to all buyers before they purchase. You'll notice that it this is not mentioned in most descriptions of the system.

The processor is an AMD Athlon XP 3000+, with a listed speed of 2.167 GHz. Not the fastest, but adequate for most routine applications, including a program like Photoshop 7.0. Basic RAM provided is 512MB, upgradeable to 2G. The large capacity 160GB hard drive is a plus, and most users won't have to worry about running out of space for a while. The drive is partitioned, with essential files located on a separate directory with restricted access to help prevent accidental deletion of files.

The unit has a CD/DVD burner, CD ROM drive, and floppy disk drive. The DVD drive functions with Record Now software. The software available to view DVD's are Windows Media Player, and WinDVD. The computer has an abundance or ports, with 8 USB 2.0 (two on the front face), two firewire, one parallel, and one Ethernet. Internal modem is a basic 56K.

Another major drawback to this system concerns game play. The video and audio cards support some games, but not most new high end games. Many games do not install properly and cannot be played on this system. Other games load and can be played initially, but crash at specific points such as level changes. Apparently the stock components must be upgraded in order to accommodate these games. Anyone seeking processor intensive gameplay should not get this system.

Those few consumers who are not at all interested in gaming, word processing or writing documents may find this a suitable purchase. Buyers should be prepared to either buy MS Office 2003 separately, or load in an older version of the software. Those interested in playing games are better off getting something that doesn't need to be upgraded. With this castrated system, Compaq definitely does not deliver a winner.

5-0 out of 5 stars A pleasure to drive
I went looking for the eMachine ... and came across this computer.... I happened to look at this Compac Presario .... Compared favorably in every aspect. Has better ability to connect all those extras from the front of the computer. Then I looked at the package of 17 in flat screen screen and printer INCLUDED. Details, ... included screen and color printer....I will sell the sealed color printer ...and keep the screen. ...
Very happy with the computer (I better be, it is only one week old).
Great deal. I'm Happy.
Personally, I wish they would just price it without the rebates, but it is a marketing gimmick and that is why they do it. Also, I read somewhere, something like 25% of the people NEVER send in their rebate form...go figure. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
Not so large that they’re prohibitively cumbersome or so small that they’re prohibitively pricey, Gateway’s newest eMachines blend sensible styling with today’s most desirable amenities and enough power for all but the most demanding notebook users. This model, the eMachines M6811 Notebook PC, sports state-of-the-art 64-bit power, DVD recording and a movie-friendly widescreen display, and is therefore an excellent choice for those seeking a notebook equally adept for entertainment and multimedia pursuits as it is for business.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (processor), a massive array of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today’s notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU’s on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The eMachines M6811 is equipped with an extremely powerful AMD Athlon 64 3400 Mobile Processor running at 2.2 GHz and featuring 1 GB of Level 2 cache for enhanced data access speed. This is one of the new breed of "64-bit" processors, which differ from traditional 32-bit processors in that they deliver substantially faster, more capable computing. There is, however, one catch -- in order to take full advantage of the capabilities of a 64-bit processor, you need to use a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit applications. Unfortunately, few 64-bit apps currently exist. Nevertheless, 64-bit processors are fully backward compatible with today’s 32-bit software and do provide some performance increase. Ultimately, a 64-bit processor is a good idea for anyone looking toward the future.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The eMachines M6811 incorporates 512 MB of RAM of PC2700 DDR RAM, expandable to 1.2 GB. This is an average RAM allotment and speed in midlevel and high-end notebooks.

Video:
CPU’s are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system’s graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. Dedicated video memory is far preferable to "shared" video memory, where the graphics controller appropriates a portion of the main system memory. With 64 MB of video memory at your bidding, you’ll have no problem accurately displaying 2D graphics and many 3D apps as well. Serious gamers and 3D artisans who absolutely need ultra-fluid, top-level visuals for today’s most challenging 3D applications may want to upgrade this component, though most notebook veterans should be quite satisfied as is.

Display:
Some of today’s largest notebooks are equipped with massive 17-inch displays, while many super-compact "ultra-lights" sport substantially smaller 12-inch displays. The eMachines M6811 features a midsize 15.4-inch display in the same widescreen format favored by moviemakers.

Hard Disk:
The eMachines M6811 features an 80 GB hard disk. While this isn’t a particularly large hard drive by desktop standards, it’s quite impressive in a notebook and ideal for those who need to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD+R/RW drive through which you can do all of the above. The unit’s 2.4x DVD+R/RW, 2x DVD-R/RW, 6x CD-R and 10x CD-RW burning speeds are typical.

Audio:
The eMachines M6811 is equipped with an integrated audio chip, built-in stereo speakers, a microphone jack and headphone/audio out.

Keyboard and Controls:
You’ll control your notebook via a standard mobile keyboard and a touchpad with vertical scroll zone.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The eMachines M6811 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11g wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a handy 6-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDA’s and the like.

Operating System and Software:
Gateway has fitted the unit with today’s most popular operating system, Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition. Other applications include Microsoft’s Works 7.0 productivity suite, Microsoft’s Picture It! Standard Edition 7.0 digital photography studio, and an array of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today’s most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and bulky for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that generally aren’t as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 7.5 lbs and 14 by 10.4 by 1.6 inches, the eMachines M6811 is of medium size.

Power:
The unit is equipped with an 8-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1300NX offers all the power and versatility you need for a home desktop PC. Focusing on affordability, the SR1300NX has room to grow with the ability to add up to 1 GB of RAM and a wide variety of peripherals via its seven USB 2.0 ports. It comes loaded with a 60 GB hard drive, 256 MB of installed RAM, 2.0 GHz AMD Sempron 3000+ processor, a CD burner, and a multiformat memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: While it offers more than enough room for everyday computing needs and a decent-sized multimedia library, the 60 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is small compared to other desktop PCs in this range. However, you can boost your storage space by adding optional external hard drives via the USB 2.0 or Firewire ports.
  • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 2.0 GHz AMD Sempron 3000+ found in this desktop is compatible in speed with Intel's 2.8 GHz Celeron processor. It's speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3D gaming. It also features a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 256 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The installed 256 MB (PC2700) is underpowered for today's demanding office productivity and multimedia applications and immersive 3D games. You'll want to take advantage of the 1 GB total RAM capability (2 x 512 MB); however, maxing this out requires the replacement of the installed 256 MB DIMM.
  • CD/DVD Drive: To keep this desktop as affordable as possible, the SR1300NX comes with just a CD-RW drive, which can burn audio, video, and data files to CD (instead of a combo DVD/CD drive). It has a fast 48x read/write speed and a 32x rewrite speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop PC comes with the Compaq Productivity keyboard and scroller mouse, both of which connect to the PS/2 ports on the back of the machine.
Graphics and Sound
The SR1300NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board. The sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The video/graphics card has up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for good range of gaming graphics and multimedia video playback, but might not stack up for ultra-realistic 3-D PC games.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1300NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (one available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 microphone, 1 headphone
  • 1 line-out, and 1 line-in jack
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate),Norton Personal Firewall 2004 (60-day security update subscription), RecordNow, iTunes, PC Doctor, and SpySubtract.

Dimensions and Weight
This desktop PC measures 15.35 x 7.17 x 16.54 inches (HxWxD) and weighs 30 pounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one awesome notebook
You can't argue with 3 hours of battery life, an awesome AMD processor, DDR RAM, Radeon Graphics (shared memory 16/32/64MB user-selectable), JBL speakers, a 15" screen, a DVD/CD-RW drive, and the wireless multiport.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Satisfied with the Compaq 900US!
My desktop PC was too outdated, so I decided that it was time for a new computer. Since I'm a student and on the brink of going to college next year, I decided that my best bet would be a mobile, notebook. Like most computer users, I sought various sources of opinions before settling on the best one. Why COMPAQ? My old desktop was a HP Pavillion and it included tons of software. However, most were never used and my HP Pavillion was "preset" to a certain look, such as the way in which all the programs under Start up are labeled and grouped. I think Compaqs are less "customized" to a certain look, you know what I mean? Its simplicity allows you to customize it to your taste without having the need to delete excess junk.

Well, I considered several Compaq models... the 732US, 725US, and the 900US. I chose the 900US, because there is more GB, considerably faster, and a larger 15" screen. Although it is not that light, the size is alright and absolutely manageable. I'm not going into the specifics, because I believe that has already been said.

Overall, I am VERY satisfied with this notebook. It has almost everything I need and the price was economical. Although the software selections weren't great, Microsoft Works 6.0 is adequate for all my lab write-ups, essays, spreadsheets, graphs, tables, and all those extra fun stuff. Besides, this laptop is expandable and upgradable! This is great selection for any home user, college student, and typical office user. I believe it consists of all you need as far as workability is concerned. I believe this notebook will suffice to provide for the typical gamer. Initial setup was a breeze and Windows XP is easy and fun.

I am able to transfer images from my desktop, edit images, and more. A serious digital artist may need a better screen though. Nevertheless, IT IS 15" and the 1024X768 is awesome... perfect. The screen is clear, nice, and bright. The sound is great with CD's AND DVD's, but music from the internet, AOL radio specifically, can be sketchy at times... probably due to my internet connection though. By the way, DVDs play GREAT!

This notebook is fast, slick, economical, and it fulfills all that I need in a computer. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. I love using it :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need
This Compaq has all the hardware you need plus the speed. You can always add software (Compaq is frugal with the software). Yes, the cd drive gets hot...all the notebooks my friends have do also. Not a problem. Your battery time will vary depending on what your doing. Cd burning sucks the battery down fast...
The screen is just fine. It seems that to get the u or s screen you have to $pend alot or trade down in RAM.
It is heavy with the battery installed. You get ALL the ports you could need incld.I'm very Happy with my Compaq 900US...you will be too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a Compaq notebook that's fast and affordable!
I just bought my Compaq 900US two days ago and it was worth the wait. I waited months for Compaq to come up with a fast and affordable laptop other than the 700 series notebooks that are limited to 384 megs of RAM and 133 speed. I am extremely impressed with the performance, battery life, options, and accessories. The price is perfect too.
I compared this to the Compaq 1505US, and found them to only have a couple of things different and saved a couple of hundred with the 900US. AMD has always kept their promise with their processors and they sold me when I compared the Athlon with the pentium. AMD is less expensive and I only wish people like myself would break away from the pentium loyalty. You can't go wrong with this one. I'm sure this could replace mostly any desktop out there.

4-0 out of 5 stars Overall a good buy
I've just got my Compaq 900US notebook a few days ago and I am pleased with it. I've been unable to find any good reviews on the system; hopefully this will help future purchasers.

The system comes equipped with an Athlon XP 1700+(1.47Ghz and a 266Mhz FSB), 256 MB PC-2100 DDR Ram, ATI IGP320M chipset and integrated graphics, a 30GB 4200 RPM ATA 100 hard drive, and DVD(x8)/CDRW(8/8/24) combo drive and a 15" TFT screen (1024x768 max resolution).

What I like: The screen is large and bright, though in my opinion not as good as a high quality CRT. The graphics capabilities are average and will be enough for a person who wants to play the latest games at lower resolutions and detail settings. I was able to run Jedi Knight II at 800x600 with high quality and Return to Castle Wolfenstein at 640x480 with medium detail settings. I've also done some benchmarking using 3dMark 2001. The scores at the default setting were around 2600. I haven't noticed any ghosting, which can occur when images on the screen move very fast. The sound is fairly loud and sounds good on DVDs and MP3s or music Cds. The notebook runs MS office apps with ease and all programs start almost instantly. Also, I've hooked it up to my TV with an s-video cable and an audio cable and watched a few DVDs without any problems. In addition, the battery life is outstanding going over 3 hours if you do basic tasks like typing. It also lasts for over two hours if you watch movies or play games. On average, I would say it lasts just over 2.5 hours. That is better than most P4 based notebooks, especially the ones using desktop CPUs. Finally the system comes with a mail in form for a free wireless card to connect to the Internet. You only have to pay shipping and handling plus tax on the shipping.

What I don't like: The system can run hot near the memory, especially when the CPU runs at its full speed. It never gets to the point where it will burn you though. Don't believe this is only an athlon problem, because I've used a P3 1 GHz Compaq Armada 500 notebook that ran as hot, if not hotter. If you set the power settings to "max battery" the system clocks itself down substantially and the system runs cool. The speakers can also crackle or get distorted when a music file or game with a lot of bass is playing. This does not happen often and is not really a huge problem. Another thing I don't like is the preinstalled software. The system comes with MS works and a load of other useless apps like AOL and CompuServe. I just uninstalled all of the apps I didn't want. In addition, the system is a bit heavy, but lighter than many "desktop replacements" like the Dell 8200. Also, I would have liked to have seen USB 2.0 ports, but a simple add on card ... could fix the problem. It does have a fire wire port though. Finally, the documentation is not very good, though a CD-rom with more detailed instructions is included. If you know nothing about computers you should still be able to figure things out. For people like me, with more expertise than the typical user, I would liked to have had more detailed specs and information.

Summary: I would recommend this system to anyone who wants good performance for a low price. If you like to play games don't expect the performance of a Geforce 4, or even 3, but some gaming is possible. What kept this system from getting 5 stars was the documentation, extra software, and average game performace. This system can do and MS office apps, plays DVD movies, and burn cds (with Adaptec Easy CD creator). If you need a notebook for college, a desktop replacement (if you don't want to run Quake 3 at 300 FPS), or just a system to travel with, the 900US is a great buy. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
Not so large that they’re prohibitively cumbersome or so small that they’re prohibitively expensive, Gateway’s newest eMachines blend sensible styling with today’s most desirable amenities and enough power for all but the most demanding notebook users. This model, the eMachines M6810 Notebook PC, sports state-of-the-art 64-bit power, wireless connectivity and a movie-friendly widescreen display. If you want a larger hard drive and DVD burning capabilities, you’ll want to check out the slightly pricier eMachines M6811, but the eMachines M6810 is nevertheless a solid and affordable choice for those seeking a notebook equally adept for entertainment and multimedia pursuits as it is for business.

The eMachines M6810 is equipped with an extremely powerful AMD Athlon 64 3400 Mobile Processor running at 2.2 GHz and featuring 1 GB of Level 2 cache for enhanced data access speed.

The eMachines M6810 incorporates 512 MB of RAM of PC2700 DDR RAM, expandable to 1.2 GB.

The eMachines M6810 features a midsize 15.4-inch display in the same widescreen format favored by moviemakers.

Hard Disk:
While the unit’s 60 GB hard disk isn’t particularly large by desktop standards, it’s considered quite adequate in a notebook and therefore satisfactory for those who need to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a small library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

This system features a CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can play and burn CDs and play DVDs.

Audio:
The eMachines M6810 is equipped with an integrated audio chip, built-in stereo speakers, a microphone jack and headphone/audio out.

Keyboard and Controls:
You’ll control your notebook via a standard mobile keyboard and a touchpad with vertical scroll zone.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The eMachines M6810 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11g wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot.

Other applications include Microsoft’s Works 7.0 productivity suite, Microsoft’s Money 2004 financial center, and an array of multimedia and Internet utilities.

At 7.5 lbs and 14 by 10.4 by 1.6 inches, the eMachines M6810 is of medium size.

Power:
The unit is equipped with an 8-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars I am a gamer
After doing a considerable amount of shopping I settled on the T2200 just before christmas. I am very pleased. I play ALOT of games including BF1942 and Mechwarrior4. I have no problems running MW4 while listening to mp3's off the hdd while running a voice com program. I picked up a G4 mmx video card for the AGP when I left the store. The only thing I could have done better would have been to get a Ti video card instead of the mmx. I have no complaints about the emachine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good for the money.
I did my homework before laying down the cash for this system, and I'm glad I went for it. Granted, Emachines may have been less than stellar in the past, but new ownership has hopefully changed this.
The specs are impressive, especially at the price point. I'll be filling the AGP slot with a better graphics card at some point, but the built-in is fine. I'm not a gamer, though, so my main reason for upgrading will be a TV-in and out (Tivo on a budget).
512 Megs of memory is huge, and the DDR doesn't hurt, either. Memory prices keep dropping, too, so when the time comes, going to a full Gig won't be too painful.
The two optical drives are fast and reliable, and again, when the time comes, adding a DVD writer won't be that bad.
As for the HD, 100 Gigs should keep you happy for a while.
I did install a slot fan right off, from recommendations I read, but haven't had any heat-related problems yet. I plan to add a HD cooler very soon, though, along with a case fan or two. I figure, why not spend a few bucks if it protects the system.
So, what you have here is a nice system for burning CD's, email, whatever, with quite a bit of potential for upgrades down the line. No, it's not the fastest or best, but it's more than adequate for most uses. Those who need more tend to know exactly what they want, and are willing to pay for it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice Machine for the money!!!
Ok, I've read the reviews and appreciate what each had to say. I've owned 3 PC's in about 4 years and all of them were built by a local PC shop. Barring none, they were mostly nothing but headaches and problems. I was thinking of sinking alot of money into an Apple/Mac due to all I've heard about their stable OS but knew I'd take a beating on the high price tags and less software options. Well, when the last PC I owned started bluescreening and even shutting on and off at will, I decided it was time to do something. Looking at the emachines of the past, I wouldn't have touched them. However, it looks like emachine is trying to become more of a major player in the PC industry and is trying to match quality and cost in attractive mixtures. I decided on this T2200 emachine when I saw all that one got in this machine. Granted to the gamer savvy, this is not the machine for them to have. Yet my son who likes games says it does ok on the games he has. I don't like some of the software however as it is incompatible or interferes with other programs (ie. winamp can't play with their version of CD/DVD software as the latter keeps taking over. I finally had to simply delete it. Another thing I found annoying was the xp log off for multiple users. Sometimes it won't log off and you have to hit ALT-CNTRL-DEL and get out with the windows manager. I also had to delete the fax software when I bought a new printer/scanner/copier as the accessory fax sofware kepts taking over instead of the fax software included and meant for the printer. What I do like is the fact that when something messes up (or the operator messes something up) you can go back to a previous time when everything was working ok on the PC and RESTORE it to those exact settings! That is so cool and it has already saved my "bacon" and kept things running smoothly. You can't beat the configuration of this ecconomical system for those of us who email and write and do finances and surf the internet alot. Sometimes it is faster than others but I suspect there are a multiple of reasons for this (especially when you are on the internet). The 6 USB ports are really great and I had no trouble setting up the machine or periphials like printers, digital photo reader, palm, etc. I use the machine in my basement office and it seems to stay cool enough that way. Also, I have a little circulating fan and I think that helps as well. Heard others say how hot it got ... perhaps mine is a fluke, but it doesn't get that way (lucky me). It is a joy to finally have a machine I am not always fighting with to run properly and my family thinks the personal touch of xp where they can go to their own startup page, is great. I will tell you that emachines warranty is ... enough to get and have peace of mind. However, beware that if you purchase your emachine from a retail outlet store like BB, or Staples, etc., they will seek to sell you their warranty without explaining that it isn't emachine's warranty you are purchasing. I paid an additional [money] for the identical warranty emachines has online. If you purchase one of these PC's, don't get the retailer's warranty unless you think it is worth the money and convenience to bring the PC to the store instead of having Emachines handle it. One thing, the few times it locks up, there is no way to shut the machine down outside of unplugging it (which I've had to do with no adverse effects). This Emachine is a good mixture of technology and affordability for the middle of the road PC user. As a pastor, I find it works well with my Bible software and my Office 2000 software. I may be simple in what I want a PC to do, but since my time is valuable and at a premium, it is finally great to have a machine that does all I need and at a price I could afford. Stability of XP and all the features of 512K ram, 100Gig HD, speedy processor (compared to my old 500mghtz) and the USBs and CD/DVD/CDRW drives sold me. So far I'm VERY PLEASED with the unit and would recommend it to anyone (other than really serious gamers) who wants alot of features and reliability in an affordable package. WAY TO GO EMACHINES!!! Oh, my son had never heard of EMACHINES before but even his friends are pretty impressed with the look, feel and all you get for the bucks. Buying this PC sure makes me look smart around the home and I just bought a lessor model for the office I was so impressed. I've taken my old machine back to the man who built it and said, "fix it and sell it as I'm through with it." I don't think I'll be saying the same about this one. :-)

2-0 out of 5 stars NOT A GAMING MACHINE !! BEWARE
I'm writing this review in the hopes that consumers like you will read it, and hopefully avoid making the costly mistake I made.
I recently purchased TWO T2200SE machines, one 6 months before christmas and the other about 2 weeks before christmas.
I got then with the intention of using them for gaming and running web development software, which I was anticipating and expecting it to run......WHAT A CROCK!
It locks up, jams the system, is slow to shut down, and to make it worse, their tech support staff are a bunch of monkies.

Why would I want to run my brand new machine in 640x480 256 colors to run a game ? what would be the point ?
My old PC sporting a stinkin CYRIX chip did a better job.
Another thing, they messed my order up 3 times, and then didn't even ship it FEDEX 2 day delivery like they promised they would, nor did they refund my money.

It might be a cheap machine, but consider exactly WHAT you are paying for

Oh and the T2200 SE machine, the big ATI RADEON video card they go on about....it's a PCI CARD not an AGP so it totally spoils the point of having it anyways! The machines have ONE fan, and run hot if they've been on for a few hours....and if you want to remove the casing to install another fan, you'll VOID your warranty.

I'm totally disappointed ! This PC would be great for someone who wants to browse the web, play a few games, but not multi-tasking...this PC is incapable of it....as you'll find yourself restarting every hour which is ANNOYING !

I wish I had just customized my own PC with the parts I needed and wanted, but now I'm stuck with these for the next year or so.
Think about it...PRICE and QUALITY often go hand in hand..

2-0 out of 5 stars For this price you can do better
By cutting down on things you don't really need like a 100GB hard disk drive, you can (at this price) get things you do need like good graphics.

Overall this machine has decent features. The AMD 1.8GHz CPU (the model number is 2200 but don't be fooled) is adequate for most users (though it does lack SSE-2, something that will hurt down the line) and it has plenty of ram and very large hard disk (something I don't really endorse right now considering the very high return volume on 100GB+ hard disk drives).

The main weakness is the graphics: the S3 ProSavage8 is a very old chipset architecture that won't play any recent 3D games (at quality levels worth playing). [I should note that Amazon incorrectly states it has Intel Extreme Graphics which are much better, though not high on my list.]

E-machines offers better computers that this, and so do it's competitors. I would keep looking. ... Read more
