The Internet reviews of the HP 5450 were a mixed bag with some people stating that it wasn't a reliable machine, some going as far as saying that they had to make a hard reset every day. I bought my HP 5450 about a month ago. Overall, I have been positively surprised by it's reliability. Many of the negative points stated in the December/January reviews have been dealt with efficiently by HP. For example the headphone jack on my machine is a standard headphone jack. With a 128 megabyte SD memory card, I have been using the iPaq as an MP3 player with no problems. The finger print reader works impeccably, always on the first time scan (I did have to practice for about 20 minutes using the training program supplied with the machine as you need to use a swift steady motion). The fingerprints are now saved in the ROM of the machine so that even if you do a Hard Reset (i.e. restore the machine to it's original configuration), the machine is still protected with you finger print. This makes your machine useless to any "would be" thief. If you take the backlighting down to a reasonable level, you easily get 7 to 8 hours of battery use. I have a second battery which I have been using when I travel. I also have the option of charging the machine when I go on long trips as there is a standard adapter which allows you to plug in your power cord straight into the Ipaq (instead of through the cradle). There is also the option of slow charging directly through the USB chord so you could leave your power chord behind without being left completely stranded. Both Bluetooth and WLAN connections work fine and are relatively easy to set up if your phone and wireless gateway are properly setup. They do use up more battery, especially the WLAN. I turn them on for a few minutes when I need to get/send my emails and turn them off when I am done. There is also a nifty backup software which allows you to backup all the RAM contents into ROM (the Ipaq file store) so that if you go on holiday, you can backup all your programs and databases to restore them later in case your memory got erased due to an extended "power outage". Size and design are exceptional. Only a little bit bigger and heavier than my previous Palm m515. The Windows Pocket PC 2002 software is even more user friendly than the Palm OS. Please note that I bought my Ipaq in Hong Kong where it comes with a 1250Mh battery as standard. It seems that Amazon's is only 900 Mh. A great machine... Well worth its price!

With the 5450/5455 I have been able to (within an hour) hook up to my WIFI system in my house, setup wireless synching and get up and browse the web. Something that I think would have taken multiple steps with my Tungsten. Here are the things I like and dislike about the 5450/5455: LIKES: 1. Integrated WIFI - The wave of the future. No need to slap add-on cards or boards to the unit. It is all built in. DISKLIKES: Overall I am a little sorry to say that after a month of usage I CANNOT recommend the iPaq for anyone but the most diehard enthusiast. The device is wildly buggy on WIFI (reported in just about every iPaq discussion forum, requires numerous soft resets ever day and frequent HARD resets (ie All data gone bye-bye). After about a month I've found this platform to be buggy, slower than Palm and just not as convenient. It does not break any new ground whatsoever for the average user. And to top it all off, the web browsing that I loved initially turns out to be dog slow -- even when connected wirelessly to my DSL. Avoid this product.
1st thing this thing looks AWESOME. forget the size of the 1910 because this looks sleek and stylish....it looks smaller than it actually is. second is the speed. its not really slow at all; same speed as 3950 clicking about, and yes its a few frames slower in games. now onto the good points :) the bluetooth wizard is a snap and i connected to my t68 in a few minutes. the wifi is also simple once u understand how it works, and the signal is as good as a laptop card! however it does kill the battery pretty quick. next thing; the battery; its **slightly** lower than the 3950 but only slightly shorter operating time. it is also removable and hp offer a high capacity battery. the great thing about it is that the screen is **soo** bright its unbelievable; i never need it higher than the lowest backlight setting (one above none) because its so bright so i get about 5 or 6 hours life. if u turn the backlight off completely (which u can in some situations) u get around 7 to 8 hours life. the sound is slightly lower than the 3950 but its not like you need it that loud anyway. i listen to music pretty loud and i never turned it up to full volume. the biometric feature is AWESOME once u get the hang, its great playing with it when u are bored :) the dpad is a bit stiff to begin with but once u get used to it and it loosens up it gets more usable - a bit small but i prefer it to the old ipaqs. i have 2 negative points: 1. the case that comes with it will scratch the finish on the ipaq if u take it on and off. so leave it either always off (and get a new case or none at all) or LEAVE IT ON (i left mine on) or u will ruin the finish on your ipaq. 2. the video and game speed - its bareable (nowhere near as bad as e740) but a bit slower than previous ipaqs. hp are addressing this as i type and once the new driver comes out the 5450 will be the fastest model out so far. also in the future you can use this ipaq as a phone aswell. how do i know? well there is a sim card slot behind the battery, and it uses a cut down version of pocket pc 2002 phone edition - so in the future there should be something to allow you to use it as a phone!! all in all an awesome product well worth the money; head and shoulders about the toshiba, the dell and the rest. if u have the money BUY it u will not regret it. there are a couple of dodgy ones floating around (with bad screen speed and wifi) but u can return it if u get one BUY IT BUY IT BUY IT!! ... Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the Presario 2145US is a 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ processor. Compaq has complemented this cost effective CPU with a generous 512 MB DDR SDRAM system memory (expandable to 1024 MB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 4X AGP graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory. As such, the unit is not the best choice for 3-D games, animation or drawing packages and high-complexity business apps. Sharing the data storage duties is a sizeable 60 GB hard disk and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive data and watch your favorite movies. In its stock setup, the system will not allow you to record to DVD media. At 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.57 inches and 7.25 pounds, the Presario 2145US is slightly below average size and therefore comfortably portable. The unit is equipped with a large 15-inch display screen capable of crystal clear 1024x768 resolutions. Other features include two USB 1.1 ports for plug and play peripheral connections, an 88-key keyboard, a Touch Pad with on/off and dedicated up/down scroll surface, and a pair of internal stereo speakers. Communication connectivity options include a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access and a high-speed RJ-45 LAN connector. The computer doesn't come with a wireless communication option, or FireWire and USB 2.0 ports for fast data interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003, Microsoft Works 6.0, and a variety of multimedia applications. | |
