2-0 out of 5 stars dell 17inch monitor
I was very dissapointed with the style and appearance of this item and would like to return it,but did not because it is to heavy for me to lug around, and I did not save the packaging. This is a very old monitor, the color is dark, it has to be resized each time I sign on. I emailed the seller for tech support and got no response as yet. There was no manual or any written help included in the packaging.I would rather have spent the money on a newer model. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars All the power, all the features, half the price!
I finally got my Axim X5 from Dell recently and I simply love the thing. It met and surpassed every expectation I had. The price is incredibly low, and there's almost no trade off what so ever from devices twice the price. It's an incredible deal. The size doesn't bother me one bit, and it fits very well in my jacket pocket.

The Dell runs just about anything I can throw at it, and it does it at an incredible speed. Having used only a Jornada 525 previously, I'm amazed at the 400mhz Xscale. Pocket TV plays video so smooth it's plain incredible. Video easily plays 3x faster than my Jornada. Games run fast and smooth, not even a hint of frame skip. The buttons are responsive, easy to use, and support multiple presses at once. This is wonderful, as so many in the past have failed to listen to what gamers really want. Dell listened, and they did it right.

The screen is bright and clear, not a hint of anything less than perfection. Using headphones, the sound is loud and completely static free. It could easily replace my Nomad II MP3 player if need be. Too many people whine about the size... get over it. If you want an ultra thin device, this isn't for you. So simply move on and go whine to someone else. I myself am just fine with the Dell's size, it's price and specs more than make up for it. Anyone willing to pay more to get much less is missing something in my book. Size can be important, sure, but only to a point. The Dell is no bigger than the high end Ipaqs and is in fact much smaller than an Ipaq with a CF sleeve. What more could you possibly ask for.

Basically the Axim will run just about the same as any other 400mhz Xscale out there, which will run just about the same as any 300mhz Xscale out there, both of which will probably run about the same as any 200mhz ARM out there... which all means you're not gonna notice a big difference in anything at all. Some programs will run better than others, it's a case by case thing. The vast majority will run 98% the same.

Now, to really notice a difference you'd have to be doing like me... going from a 133mhz Jornada 525 to a 400mhz Axim. There's a nice speed boost for ya. I've went from 6 fps on Pocket TV to 24 fps. From 2-3 fps on large video with no landscape support, to 18 fps full screen landscape. I'm sure with time and tweaking I'll have that at 24 easily.

See, the big joy of the Axim is what it offers that so many others don't. Dual slots are a wonderful thing to people like me. The screen is lovely. The sound is crisp. They come with a 1yr VERY fast replacement warranty. That's unreal. Incredibly long battery power, longer life ones to come, replaceable battery, spare charging slot, coolest sync cradle ever... the list is huge. Toss in $... worth of free software in the form of the top selling Rosco Picture Viewer and IA Presenter (PowerPoint viwer). All for a price that's half of what the Ipaq owners paid.

I simply love my Axim. I admit, I don't do much mobile computing and I would never make full use of a laptop. I'm simply never far enough away from a desktop computer to need a laptop. The Axim however, fits the need perfect. I've got a small device to store every bit of information I could ever need, and it's completely portable. It doesn't replace a PC, it enhances it. I can do things with my Pocket PC I would have an incredibly hard time doing with even the smallest of notebook computers.

A typical usage of the Pocket PC for me is while waiting in lines, or just waiting in general. I've got several amazingly fun games stored to play, ebooks to read, music to listen to, websites to read (news, weather, tech, stocks), and much more. I also use it to keep track of all my tasks, appointments, assignments, notes, and alarms. The Dell comes with Rosco Picture Viewer, so I store photos of friends and family. (I'm not the type to carry pictures in his wallet) I also carry my entire art gallery. Sometimes I use it to reflect, sometimes to use as reference, sometimes to show. For whatever reasons, it's there when I need it.

Basically Pocket PC's have filled a deep need in my day to day life for mobile information. I always longed for a laptop, but now that I've used Pocket PC's I no longer believe I need one. I love Pocket PC's and the Dell is by far the best one I've owned, and in my opinion, the best deal on the market today without question.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dell Axim X5 400 MHz Beats Competition
I've had several handhelds over the years. First a Palm III, then a Sony Clie, then an HP, and now my Dell Axim. In my experience, the Dell Axim totally blows away the competition. With it's range of features and it's software. The Dual Memory card slots is yet another plus.
The only downside to this otherwise excellent product is the bulkiness. Even though it isn't much larger than the competition, but you can tell the weight difference between my HP and my Dell Axim. The Axim is a couple of ounces heavier.

There are some problems I encountered with some of the accessories though. For example, my SanDisk CompactFlash card will not play music. If you want to play MP3s on your Axim, I recommend a Lexar SecureDigital card. A 128 Megabyte card will hold about 25 songs. (I do not recommend downloading music, doing so could bring serious legal charges or fines against you. Buy the CD, then use a program to rip a track, then copy it to your Dell Axim.)

That's about it! To put it in short, my Dell Axim does everything I need it to do, and I'm sure it will live up to your expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best pocket PC for the price
This is a great pocket PC. I am not a hard core techie like my husband and I find it easy to use. It synches with outlook, which was key for me. Also, there is plenty of good software to download for it. I like Avant-go and e-wallet. The buttons are programmable so you can use your downloaded software with ease. For example, my home button now simply brings me the news. I do reccommend getting more memory if you want to store photos or video clips, etc...

2-0 out of 5 stars Buggy
The Axim has a bug that even Dell customer support will grudgingly confirm. Sometimes the unit will stay on after you power it off and slowly drain down the battery. After a few times of this, the reserve battery drains as well, and POOF! no more data.

happens to me on my Axim. No software fix yet.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Dell
The Handheld worked well while I had it on the charger (not the cradle) every day but I have had numerous problems with battery life. The back-up batteries have also run down rapidly and I am really sick of having to re-enter my data. Also the cradle charger doesn't work! I wrote to Dell Australia via their web site but have had no response, and I was out of warranty when these problems started appearing. I would recommend you consider a more well-established brand over the Axim. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The best PDA for the best price!
I purchased my 300 MHz Axim X5 from Dell in mid December and it arrived about 2 weeks later. This is my very first pocket PC, although I did have a Palm V about 2 years ago. This thing just amazes me. The screen is nice and bright... the style is very comfortable to hold (rubber sides).

My choices for pocket PCs were the Toshiba e740, the HP IPAQ 1910, and the Dell Axim X5 - mainly because they were all under $... after rebates. The 300 MHz Axim is by far the cheapest and the best value since it has dual expansion slots (SD and CF). I am currently using a Netgear CF Wireless adaper card to surf the internet anywhere in my home.

Bottom line... the Axim is the best PDA for the best price. I love mine!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect For Anybody
This is the first PDA that I've bought, but when this gets old I'll definately buy another Dell if they continue to make them. The pre-installed Pocket PC 2002 is perfect for writing Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, or just viewing them. There are 3 different methods to input letters including a handwriting transcriber that you can personalize to fit the way you write. It took me about 2 minutes to set up my computer so that I could share files between the two of them. You can view all types of pictures on your Axim with the awesome colored screen. The operating system's name says it all, this is definately a Pocket PC because of all of the things you can do with it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Axim X5 is the worst that could happen with you
I ll be short. I am really tired of explaining in details what i HATE about Axim X5, and how I regret that I was on a cheap side and bought this monster. I noticed that some of the happy Dell customers are happy for the first couple of months. Wait till your warranty expires!!! This axim x5 is good only for 6-7 months then its good for hammering nails. I am sure that nobody is happy about an idea of buying a new Pda from Dell every 8-10 months, except for Michael Dell.
So quality is bad, and I am really surprised as they do pretty good laptops and desk tops.
Customer service: God!! Send some mercy!!! Listen, I speak with an accent, I live in New York, I got used to dozens of accents. But I refuse to understand this ridiculous mumbling, robot's phrases, like "Or Mister Smith, I understand your frustration". Yeah right... But what kills me the most is the fact thaty they LIE to you. "Did you sent my axim 5 back???" "Yes we did!!" 3 weeks later no results!!!

I am tired of dell,

1-0 out of 5 stars Dell doesn't care about you or your data.
I bought one of the Dell Handhelds and found that the SD slot did not work after buying three cards to try. I ended up calling Dell Support to help troubleshoot my problem and they told me to perform a "hard boot". They failed to tell me that this would wipe all my data on the device and I lost two days worth of information on it. When I found that this was the case and the representative didn't mention that it would wipe it all, I was very frustrated. Worst of all, it didn't fix the problem. When I asked to speak to a supervisor, I was informed that they didn't have one because "they've all gone home". As a result, it's been sent back and I'm very happy with my iPaq--and its support. Buy a Compaq, they know that data is important and my calls to support don't get treated as a casualty of doing business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pretty amazing for its price!
INTRO:
Hey, if you're reading this review, you are thinking whether to buy this or not. If I were you, I would buy it. This is because this little handheld is pretty amazing (with some attachments).

CAPABILITIES:
Well, first thing first. This is my first Pocket PC. I bought DELL because my computer is DELL and it's pretty good. With the optional SD and CF card (if you're going to get one of these, i recommend to buy a large SD card. This is because if you buy a CF card, your CF slot is full, forcing you not to put in additional attachments such as GPS, camera, ect.), you can add music, MOVIES, books, maps, and virtually anything digital memory. Without the optional SD and CF card, you can still add these, but the Dell Axim does not really have the memory. If you happen to buy the GPS from Pharos (recommended by DELL), you cannot fit the headphones because its right next to the CF slot.

PROS:
This DELL Axim is pretty slim, and pretty fast. It also features BLUETOOTH technology for wireless stuff. It has a CF slot and a SD slot. Also has a "Hard Reset" which is basically like "reformatting" except it takes less then a minute. You can watch movies, listen to songs, never get lost (GPS), take photos, and virtually anything with the optional attachments.
SIMPLIFIED:
*Slim
*Fast
*Bluetooth
*CF and SD Slot
*Hard Reset
*Play movies/music
*Never get lost (GPS) OPTIONAL
*You can do virtually anything (digital) with the optional attachments

CONS:
A cradle for fifty dollars? I don't think so. The customer support can be better, if you know what I'm talking about. I tried to call them for something simple, asking for the foldable keyboard, and they put me on hold for 30 minutes! Small memory (32 MB).
SIMPLIFIED:
*Cradle for fifty dollars?!
*Customer Support sucks
*Small Default Memory (32 MB)

BOTTOM LINE:
If this is your first handheld to buy, buy it. It is the best you can ever get in the price range. But before you go off and buy it, read the recommendation below.

ADDITION TO THIS PRODUCT:
256mb Lexar SD Card
128mb SanDisk CF Card
Screen Protector
Pharos GPS
Pharos GPS Car Kit
VEO Camera

CONCLUSION:
All the above products are optional. But I do recommend you get the first 3. Go get this product. It's well worth the money! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Larger Than Life
I have thoroughly enjoyed my 19" Dell Color Monitor due to the great resolution and "larger than life" screen.

5-0 out of 5 stars DELL P992 Monitor
I have been using this monitor at 1024 x 768 resolution and have found picture quality to be sharp and very detailed. I am really impressed with photos taken using my FUJI S602ZOOM using the Finepix Viewer as a slideshow.

This CRT monitor is a bargain as they are becoming less popular due to Dell's 19" FP TFTs. I have been given to understand that text can be 'fuzzy' on the TFTs and can honestly say I have never experienced any 'fuzzyness' with this superb CRT.

Image is stable and sharp.....a quality product from DELL.

I will wait for a while when TFTs become cheaper and DELL have ironed out the 'fuzzy' problem with text.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dell, Compaq, and Retail
I use to use this 19" monitor at 1280x1024 but it started to get way too blurry so I scaled down to 1024x768. The monitor isn't very bright. The monitor at work is amazingly crisp to where I can easily read text at 1280x1024 with the Compaq's 17" monitor. I'm now rebuilding my home system using all retail components (retail components, not system). I'm saving a lot of money and I can kiss dell drivers and OEM hardware problems goodbye. The dirty secret is that OEM means that it didn't pass quality tests to be retail. ... Read more
