Amazon.com Product Description The PCV-W10 is not built to satisfy the true power user. Although it does feature an impressive 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB) and a large 60 GB hard drive, the unit is constrained somewhat by a serviceable but far from state-of-the-art 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor and a 32 MB SiS 650 integrated graphics chip. Well suited to most home and home office use, Internet surfing, light gaming, and many basic business-related tasks, the PCV-W10 is nevertheless not ideal for high-end, graphics-based rendering applications or the latest crop of 3-D games. It is, however, ready to satisfy fans of multimedia entertainment. Included inside the PCV-W10 is a combination CD-R/CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the systems 15.3-inch LCD viewing screen for its DVD-friendly 16:9 wide aspect ratio. Music aficionados can play their CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed. Sony has enhanced the PCV-W10 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface, a Sony Vaio keyboard and hassle-free optical mouse, three lightning-quick USB 2.0 ports for the new breed of plug-and-play peripherals, and a high-speed IEEE 1394 interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders. Pre-installed software includes Microsofts Windows XP operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, and a broad range of Internet, multimedia, and antivirus and recovery software.

Amazon.com Product Description The 4400US is far from a bare-bones machine. Compaq has taken advantage ofrecent hard drive price drops to equip the unit with a sizable 40 GB hard drive. It has included a fast 24x (write) CD-RW drive for recording and playing musicand archiving data, a 3.5-inch disk drive for archiving and transferring smalleramounts of data, and a SoundMax III digital audio card for clean, accuratesound. A spare bay is reserved for future drive expansion, four USB ports forfun plug-and-play peripherals such as digital cameras and joysticks, a parallelport for non-plug-and-play printers, and a serial port for older mice andexternal modems. Online fans will love the unit's incorporated Compaq Internet keyboard. Inaddition to the standard array of keys, it also offers several supplementarybuttons for convenient one-touch access to e-mail functions and favoriteInternet sites. Even the system's mouse is equipped with a Web-ready scrollwheel for easier navigation. An integrated 56K modem delivers basic Internetconnection speed. In order to keep the price as low as it is, Compaq has not outfitted the 4400USwith a monitor or speakers. Prospective customers are thus given the freedom ofselecting separate components, a perfect situation for those who favor a certainbrand or style or may already own such equipment from a previous system. A copyof the latest and most stable Microsoft operating system, Windows XP, and avariety of multimedia, data protection, and Internet applications complete thepackage. Reviews (2)
But for anyone who wants solid performance at a reasonable price, I highly recommend this machine. Compaq's quality is well-known, and this package includes some nice features for a family computer. The 1.3GHz Intel Celeron provides speedy graphics rendering (though gamers would no doubt disagree!) for most home applications and kids' games, and 128MB RAM is a good start for most people. The 40GB hard drive should provide more than enough room to hold even the most bloated new applications (of course, I remember the days when I thought I could *never* fill up a 400MB drive!). A pre-installed V.90 modem and 10/100 network card make Internet connectivity a snap, as does the Windows XP network setup wizard (though, again, I did it manually as I was adding this machine to an existing network). By the way, for those running Win 98 or Me, XP is a great leap forward in operating system stability and speed. No more "blue screen of death" or inexplicable system lock-ups! I did drop in more memory (512MB), which improved processing speed noticably, and also installed a GeForce AGP video card with 64MB VRAM. Most run-of-the-mill users probably wouldn't need to do that, but I run a few graphics-intensive applications and it helped them quite a bit. The cost of these additions was minimal. There's no monitor included in the package, but quality 17- and 19-inch monitors are available very inexpensively these days. I completed my setup with a 19-inch ViewSonic, and it "gilded the lily" of this system. If you're looking to upgrade from your older Pentium-based system, or want a second computer for the kids, I would recommend this package without reservation. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description The Presario s5010nx-b is driven by a price-conscious 2.5 GHz Intel Celeron processor -- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added a minimal alloent of RAM memory -- 128 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) -- and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with just 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system is not intended for 3-D games, midlevel 3-D graphics, heavy-duty multitasking, or even marginally demanding business applications. To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5010nx-b is equipped with a smallish 40 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW drive that supports fast CD burning and playing but no DVD operations. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). A 17-inch monitor and a pair of JBL-designed desktop speakers complete the hardware package. Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the Pavilion 514n lies a surprisingly capable 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor. HP has matched this budget-conscious CPU with 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM, an integrated Intel Extreme graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, and a respectable 60 GB hard disk. Other data handling tools include a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications and backup needs, and a CD-Writer/DVD-ROM combo drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive large amounts of information, and, when the work is done, enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. The Pavilion 514n sports a number of amenities that only a few months ago were reserved for more expensive systems, including a full half-dozen ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for speedy interaction with plug and play peripherals, a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse, a convenient HP Internet Command Center keyboard, and a pair of small but adequate Polk Audio desktop speakers. The unit does not offer an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for interaction with supporting peripherals such as digital camcorders, but it does feature a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access and a 10/100Base-T networking interface for high-speed e-communications. Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, the versatile WordPerfect Productivity Pack and Intuit Quicken Financial Center. HP has not included a monitor, thus allowing users to independently select a model based on their own preferences. Reviews (4)
Otherwise it's great.
A quick review of the components: Video: Built "Intel Extreme" graphics (can not be upgraded) - This is fine for most users, and will play all the games out today. However you will not be able to play newer 3D games at there highest settings, and this will only get worse as the years go by. On the other hand 2-D games will run fine on this system for many years to come. So I would not buy this system if you want to play the latest 3D games. If you want to play 2D games (such as card games or strategy games), or pre-rendered 3D games (such as Myst style games), you will find that this system won't even blink. The other components (hard disk, ram, CD-RW drive, DVD drive) are all perfect for the typical user. They should be more than enough for the life of the system. It has built in networking for those building a home network, or who want to connect to a high-speed Internet provider via Cable or DSL. It also has USB 2.0, which is great for MP3 players, scanners, and other external add-ons. With USB 2.0 you can also add high-speed upgrades such as extra hard drives or a DVD burner without opening up the computer. A nice feature for those not technically inclined. The speakers are small and the sound won't be great. Try them out, and if they don't work for you replace them. The software bundle is good: DVD player, MP3 software, Photo editing software and the Word Perfect productivity suite cover 90% of your software needs. HP reliability is very high, so for most, but not all users (those 3D gamers I mentioned), this is a good low cost computer system you can expect to last for a long time. If you are looking for a good low cost monitor to go with it, look at the Samsung monitors. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the Pavilion a200n lies a 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor. HP has matched this budget-conscious CPU with 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM, an integrated Intel Extreme graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, and a smallish 40 GB hard drive. Other data handling tools include a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications and backup needs, and a CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs and archive information. The Pavilion a200n is rather short on amenities. The package does not include a display or speakers. Nor does it feature a DVD drive for playing and burning DVD discs or an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (normally used for fast data movement to and from external devices such as digital camcorders). HP has included a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for speedy interaction with plug and play peripherals, a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse and a convenient HP Multimedia keyboard. Connectivity options include a low-speed 56K modem and a 10/100Base-T networking interface for high-speed e-communications. The impressive bundled software package features such useful applications as WordPerfect Productivity Pack 2002, WordPerfect 10 and Quattro Pro 10, Intuit Quicken New Users Edition, and the Windows XP Home Edition operating system. By the way the other reviewer is nuts, because I upgraded mine with the stuff he says you can use in about 30 minutes. Everything worked fine and it was all just the cheapest thing they had in the store. And while I didn't upgrade the ram I looked and there is a free slot, standard size for DDR-Ram.
(1) Try to add more memory and/or hard-disks -- the HP cases (2) Try to replace anything that goes out -- HP unfortunately Still, if you want something that works out of the box and would rather buy something new if you need to upgrade or change, HP is a reasonable computer to get. ... Amazon.com Product Description Driven by a reasonably peppy 2.7 GHz Celeron processor and a minimal alloent of 256 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory, the Pavilion a400n isn't intended to keep up with the latest Pentium 4-infused units but will certainly suffice for the majority of tasks it will be asked to perform. HP has enclosed an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, and a large 80 GB hard drive on which to store all your files and programs. The system features two optical drives -- a CD-RW drive and a DVD drive -- thus allowing you to burn and play audio CDs, archive files to compact disc, watch DVD movies, and quickly copy files from one CD to another. In this stock configuration, DVD writing is not supported. Other key amenities include a front panel-mounted 7-in-1 digital card reader for accessing memory cards from devices such as PDAs and digital cameras, six high-speed USB 2.0 ports (one of the front) for exchanging information with external devices such as scanners and external drives, two FireWire ports (one on the front) for fast interaction with digital camcorders, two available PCI slots, a front-mounted microphone and headphone port, and six-speaker surround sound audio support. The package does not feature a speaker system or a monitor, thus allowing you to choose from the many alternatives currently available. Communication facilities include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up surfing and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface for high-speed e-communications. An HP Internet keyboard and HP mouse with convenient scrolling wheel complete the hardware picture. The bundled software package features such essentials as the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center, and a variety of multimedia and security utilities.

Amazon.com Product Description Sporting a 2.50 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256 MB PC2100 DRR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario S4100nx delivers good value but is far removed from Compaqs top-of-the-line Presario 8000T series. To store and transfer your data, Compaq has equipped the unit with a surprisingly large 80 GB hard drive (more than enough space for most users), a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, and a whopping half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals.
