The Basics
In the world of computers, customers pay a premium price for top-level state-of-the-art gear. Fortunately, there are plenty of powerful, capable choices just a notch or two below the pricey state-of-the art trendsetters. One such computer is the HP Pavilion A362N Desktop PC, a unit that's suitable for virtually any business, home, home office, or even home entertainment situation yet isn't priced inordinately high. Top amenities include a DVD burner, a powerful 3D graphics card, and an impressively spacious hard drive.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Pavilion A362N, HP has installed a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading technology. Hyper-Threading, a new Intel innovation, allows a single CPU system -- which most are -- to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications. Running at a snappy 3.0 GHz, this particular CPU would be considered fast even without its Hyper-Threading.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Pavilion A362N features 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory, an average allotment in today's desktop market and perfectly satisfactory for most single task and multitasking assignments. The system is also constructed to support later RAM upgrading, to a stunning total of 4 GB (eight times the stock allotment and more than any user will probably ever need).

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The Pavilion A362N features one of todays most respected graphics cards, an ATI Radeon 9200. Sporting 128 MB of video memory and futuristic architecture, this card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in industry leading computer games and 3D animation packages.

Display:
HP has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Pavilion A362N produces sound via an audio chip integrated on its mainboard. This is a typical setup for many PCs, producing satisfying but not earth shaking output and six channels of surround sound. Speakers are not enclosed.

Hard Drive
At 160 GB, the internal hard drive is one of the most spacious in any desktop PC, offering enough room for a massive allotment of files and applications and ample music, video/photo and multimedia libraries too.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features dual optical drives - a fast 48-speed CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a versatile DVD+RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn music and data CDs, play DVD movies, and record home videos to long-lasting DVD media. Moreover, two drives allow you to make extremely quick copies of any CD.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than six high-speed USB 2.0 ports -- two of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. HP has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a 7-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections. The system's two available PCI slots may be used for add-on audio cards, video cards, and the like.

Operating System and Software
The Pavilion A362N features an extremely comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. HP will also pre-install the Microsoft Money 2003 and Quicken New User Edition 2003 financial centers, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite and an impressive assortment of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Keyboard and Mouse
To help free your workspace of cumbersome cables, HP will include a convenient wireless keyboard and wireless mouse combo. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony’s stylish and inventive Vaio PCV-W10 may just represent the next big step in desktop computing. In contrast to the bulky multicomponent setup of a traditional PC, the Vaio PCV-W10 sports a sleek all-in-one, fold-open design that more closely resembles a notebook. Fashionable, functional, and space-efficient, Sony’s latest PC is a revolutionary jump into the future that could change the way you compute.

The PCV-W10 is not built to satisfy the true power user. Although it does feature an impressive 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB) and a large 60 GB hard drive, the unit is constrained somewhat by a serviceable but far from state-of-the-art 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor and a 32 MB SiS 650 integrated graphics chip. Well suited to most home and home office use, Internet surfing, light gaming, and many basic business-related tasks, the PCV-W10 is nevertheless not ideal for high-end, graphics-based rendering applications or the latest crop of 3-D games.

It is, however, ready to satisfy fans of multimedia entertainment. Included inside the PCV-W10 is a combination CD-R/CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the system’s 15.3-inch LCD viewing screen for its DVD-friendly 16:9 wide aspect ratio. Music aficionados can play their CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the PCV-W10 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface, a Sony Vaio keyboard and hassle-free optical mouse, three lightning-quick USB 2.0 ports for the new breed of plug-and-play peripherals, and a high-speed IEEE 1394 interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, and a broad range of Internet, multimedia, and antivirus and recovery software. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

One of Compaq's most affordable PCs, the Presario 4400US desktopcomputer is a solid choice for those who can't afford or don't require the speedand power of a pricey state-of-the-art machine. Powered by a reliable Intel 1.3GHz Celeron processor with 256 KB of L2 cache, 128 MB of 133 MHz SDRAM, and an 8MB accelerated video card, the 4400US offers plenty of oomph for applicationssuch as data management, word processing, Internet surfing, and some 3-D graphicdesign. It is, however, less suitable for demanding 3-D applications such ashigh-end graphics or gaming.

The 4400US is far from a bare-bones machine. Compaq has taken advantage ofrecent hard drive price drops to equip the unit with a sizable 40 GB hard drive. It has included a fast 24x (write) CD-RW drive for recording and playing musicand archiving data, a 3.5-inch disk drive for archiving and transferring smalleramounts of data, and a SoundMax III digital audio card for clean, accuratesound. A spare bay is reserved for future drive expansion, four USB ports forfun plug-and-play peripherals such as digital cameras and joysticks, a parallelport for non-plug-and-play printers, and a serial port for older mice andexternal modems.

Online fans will love the unit's incorporated Compaq Internet keyboard. Inaddition to the standard array of keys, it also offers several supplementarybuttons for convenient one-touch access to e-mail functions and favoriteInternet sites. Even the system's mouse is equipped with a Web-ready scrollwheel for easier navigation. An integrated 56K modem delivers basic Internetconnection speed.

In order to keep the price as low as it is, Compaq has not outfitted the 4400USwith a monitor or speakers. Prospective customers are thus given the freedom ofselecting separate components, a perfect situation for those who favor a certainbrand or style or may already own such equipment from a previous system. A copyof the latest and most stable Microsoft operating system, Windows XP, and avariety of multimedia, data protection, and Internet applications complete thepackage. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good value!
Its pretty sweet. I thought all i would do with it was surf the web. But now i have a DVD ROM installed and put in an additional 256 MB of memory. the memory upgrade is necessary as Windows XP uses a lot of RAM. An additional 256MB should suffice.
i have an internet cable connection and downloads are a snap. the cd burner works well and viewing dvds with the graphic card provided is very good.
all in all i think this is a very good machine if u dont want extreme performance.
I would reccomend this machine as there is a lot of room for upgrades and the processor provides more than adequate performance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good, inexpensive family machine
Notice to hard-core gamers or bleeding-edge types: this isn't the computer for you!

But for anyone who wants solid performance at a reasonable price, I highly recommend this machine. Compaq's quality is well-known, and this package includes some nice features for a family computer. The 1.3GHz Intel Celeron provides speedy graphics rendering (though gamers would no doubt disagree!) for most home applications and kids' games, and 128MB RAM is a good start for most people. The 40GB hard drive should provide more than enough room to hold even the most bloated new applications (of course, I remember the days when I thought I could *never* fill up a 400MB drive!). A pre-installed V.90 modem and 10/100 network card make Internet connectivity a snap, as does the Windows XP network setup wizard (though, again, I did it manually as I was adding this machine to an existing network). By the way, for those running Win 98 or Me, XP is a great leap forward in operating system stability and speed. No more "blue screen of death" or inexplicable system lock-ups!

I did drop in more memory (512MB), which improved processing speed noticably, and also installed a GeForce AGP video card with 64MB VRAM. Most run-of-the-mill users probably wouldn't need to do that, but I run a few graphics-intensive applications and it helped them quite a bit. The cost of these additions was minimal.

There's no monitor included in the package, but quality 17- and 19-inch monitors are available very inexpensively these days. I completed my setup with a 19-inch ViewSonic, and it "gilded the lily" of this system.

If you're looking to upgrade from your older Pentium-based system, or want a second computer for the kids, I would recommend this package without reservation. ... Read more

Manufacturer

The BasicsHP's Media Center m1070n Photosmart PC features similar functionality to HP's awesome top-of-the-line Media Center m1090n Photosmart PC but with considerably less power and storage space. Perfect for general users and multimedia fans who want high-end perks such as DVD burning, integrated seven-channel audio, cordless remote control and all the latest connectivity but don't want to pay a premium price for cutting edge performance, the Media Center m1070n is a strong bang-for-the-buck desktop computer that makes quick work of all but the most demanding tasks or applications.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Media Center m1070n, HP has turned to Intel and its new Pentium 4 520 CPU. This is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at 2.8 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a fast CPU and a strong centerpiece to a midlevel system.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Media Center m1070n features 512 GB of fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM main memory. This is an average allotment for a computer of this caliber, but its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is more than enough for most multitasking situations and complex applications. Moreover, the system is constructed to support RAM upgrades to a stunning total of 4 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The Media Center m1070n features a strong graphics card, an ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI-E with 128 dedicated MB of video memory. A video card with dedicated memory is far preferable to cards that share the system's memory, and this card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in most computer games and 3D animation packages. Serious gamers who demand perfect frame rates at extremely high resolutions may want to upgrade to a 256 MB video card, such as the Radeon X600 PRO PCI-E found in HP's Media Center m1090n.

Display:
HP has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Media Center m1070n produces stereo and surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. The two more costly computers in this series (the m1090n and m1080n) also feature a three-piece Altec Lansing speaker system, whereas this system does not.

Hard Drive
At 160 GB, the unit's internal hard drive is spacious enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Further storage possibilities are offered in the form of the convenient HP Personal Media Drive, a docking slot located on the front of the computer tower that accepts portable hard drives.

This system features two optical drives -- a DVD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs and DVD movies, and a DVD+R/RW drive through which you can burn music and data CDs, play DVD movies, and record home videos to long-lasting DVD media. Moreover, the unit's two drives allow you to make extremely quick copies of any CD or DVD.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than six high-speed USB 2.0 ports -- two of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. HP has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 9-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections. The system's single open PCI slot may be used for add-on audio cards, video cards, and the like.

Operating System and Software
The Media Center m1070n features an extremely comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's beefy Windows XP Media Center Edition operating system. HP will also pre-install the Microsoft Money Standard 2004 and Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial suites, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package, HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software, and an impressive assortment of multimedia utilities. Last but certainly not least is HP's own Personal Video Recorder for recording and archiving up to 200 hours of video from sources such as cable and satellite TV.

Control
To help free your workspace of cumbersome cables, HP will provide an HP Media Center keyboard with convenient one-touch hotkeys and a corded optical mouse. To help you relax when you're watching movies, playing games or listening to music, the system also features a handy wireless infrared remote control. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

As one of the most affordable members of the expansive Compaq Presario s5000nx roster of light- to medium-duty PCs, this particular model, the Presario s5010nx-bDesktop PC, is definitely not recommended for anything other than the absolute basics. Its price is certainly right, especially considering that this is a complete desktop package including a monitor and speakers. But if you intend to go beyond such general duties as word processing, personal finances, email and CD burning, you should either check into another Compaq model or plan on upgrading key components.

The Presario s5010nx-b is driven by a price-conscious 2.5 GHz Intel Celeron processor -- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added a minimal alloent of RAM memory -- 128 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) -- and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with just 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system is not intended for 3-D games, midlevel 3-D graphics, heavy-duty multitasking, or even marginally demanding business applications.

To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5010nx-b is equipped with a smallish 40 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW drive that supports fast CD burning and playing but no DVD operations. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). A 17-inch monitor and a pair of JBL-designed desktop speakers complete the hardware package. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

As one of the most cost-effective models in HP Pavilion's lineup, the Pavilion 514n Desktop PC delivers modern computer basics at an incredibly affordable price point. Those who constantly strain their computer with processor-intensive applications, the latest 3-D games, and severe multitasking may want to look elsewhere, but the Pavilion 505n is a solid choice for those who can't afford or don't require the blazing speed of a state-of-the-art machine.

At the heart of the Pavilion 514n lies a surprisingly capable 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor. HP has matched this budget-conscious CPU with 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM, an integrated Intel Extreme graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, and a respectable 60 GB hard disk. Other data handling tools include a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications and backup needs, and a CD-Writer/DVD-ROM combo drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive large amounts of information, and, when the work is done, enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters.

The Pavilion 514n sports a number of amenities that only a few months ago were reserved for more expensive systems, including a full half-dozen ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for speedy interaction with plug and play peripherals, a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse, a convenient HP Internet Command Center keyboard, and a pair of small but adequate Polk Audio desktop speakers.

The unit does not offer an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for interaction with supporting peripherals such as digital camcorders, but it does feature a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access and a 10/100Base-T networking interface for high-speed e-communications. Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, the versatile WordPerfect Productivity Pack and Intuit Quicken Financial Center. HP has not included a monitor, thus allowing users to independently select a model based on their own preferences. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Had it for 4 months but........
As of Sept 2003 the PC would not power up. So I have to ship it to HP in CA to see what's the matter. Thank God it's still in warranty! The tech support was good and I hope the repair will be the same.
The reason I gave 4 stars is because the shared graphic card can't be upgraded.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Microsoft Works
Be warned, in the event that it matters, that the Microsoft Works Suite listed is NOT part of the software package. It was not included on my computer and an HP representative tells me that this listing is an error. I'm slightly annoyed. It's not really the reason I bought the computer, but I did note the inclusion of this software when I was making the decision.

Otherwise it's great.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellant computer!
This HP Pavillion 524n is way cool. I hooked it up in about 5 minutes and I'm already jammin' to Ministry of Sound Radio online. Buy one today!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good system for everyone except for 3D gamers
This system is a good choice for most people looking for a reliable, low cost computer. HP does a good job of covering the needs of most users, but this system has a week spot: 3D gaming.

A quick review of the components:
CPU: 2.2 GHZ Celeron - all the Celerons sold in new systems today are based on the same 'core' as the P4. The only difference is that the Celeron has about half the on-die cache as the P4. This is one of the things that will impact 3D gaming, however it won't have a major affect most other applications used by normal users.

Video: Built "Intel Extreme" graphics (can not be upgraded) - This is fine for most users, and will play all the games out today. However you will not be able to play newer 3D games at there highest settings, and this will only get worse as the years go by. On the other hand 2-D games will run fine on this system for many years to come. So I would not buy this system if you want to play the latest 3D games. If you want to play 2D games (such as card games or strategy games), or pre-rendered 3D games (such as Myst style games), you will find that this system won't even blink.

The other components (hard disk, ram, CD-RW drive, DVD drive) are all perfect for the typical user. They should be more than enough for the life of the system. It has built in networking for those building a home network, or who want to connect to a high-speed Internet provider via Cable or DSL. It also has USB 2.0, which is great for MP3 players, scanners, and other external add-ons. With USB 2.0 you can also add high-speed upgrades such as extra hard drives or a DVD burner without opening up the computer. A nice feature for those not technically inclined.

The speakers are small and the sound won't be great. Try them out, and if they don't work for you replace them.

The software bundle is good: DVD player, MP3 software, Photo editing software and the Word Perfect productivity suite cover 90% of your software needs.

HP reliability is very high, so for most, but not all users (those 3D gamers I mentioned), this is a good low cost computer system you can expect to last for a long time.

If you are looking for a good low cost monitor to go with it, look at the Samsung monitors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars internet nervous no more.
I think my wife and I are just about the last people any-where to take the plunge into computerdom. Im 63, and it was embarassing to pick up a K-mart or Wall-Mart flyer in the sunday paper recently(last five years or so) and not have a clue as to what some of the stuff was that was being advertised. Our daughter finally convinced us to buy a computer. We decided on HP stuff(monitor-hp pavilion mx75)(printer-HP deskjet 5550) along with the 1.3 intel processor was about all we would need to find out what was going on in the world around us. We bought our stuff from Best-Buy in MCallen Texas. The price was right and so are the people working there. My only complaint is this thing is almost to much fun to shut off. Time goes by way to fast while im playing around 0n line. We went with verizon because they are our phone co. Anyhow, bottom line is we sure do like this computer. So do other people who have seen what we bought, and what the price was. Im going to watch football now. Goodby, and thanks for building a computer we could afford. Don and Mary James. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Ultra-affordable but not very powerful, the HP Pavilion a200n Desktop PC is built for folks who don't want or don't need to drop a lot of dough on a high-end machine. Those who constantly strain their computer with processor-intensive applications, the latest 3-D games, and heavy multitasking will want to look elsewhere, but the Pavilion a200n is otherwise a solid choice for the budget-conscious user.

At the heart of the Pavilion a200n lies a 2.4 GHz Intel Celeron processor. HP has matched this budget-conscious CPU with 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM, an integrated Intel Extreme graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, and a smallish 40 GB hard drive. Other data handling tools include a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications and backup needs, and a CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs and archive information.

The Pavilion a200n is rather short on amenities. The package does not include a display or speakers. Nor does it feature a DVD drive for playing and burning DVD discs or an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (normally used for fast data movement to and from external devices such as digital camcorders). HP has included a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for speedy interaction with plug and play peripherals, a two-button PS/2 scrolling mouse and a convenient HP Multimedia keyboard. Connectivity options include a low-speed 56K modem and a 10/100Base-T networking interface for high-speed e-communications.

The impressive bundled software package features such useful applications as WordPerfect Productivity Pack 2002, WordPerfect 10 and Quattro Pro 10, Intuit Quicken New Users Edition, and the Windows XP Home Edition operating system. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good system, not the fastest
My dad bought me this system for school work and for surfing the web. Works great for that. Of course I like to game, and it was okay but not great at that. So I ended up buying my own video card and a 2nd hard drive.

By the way the other reviewer is nuts, because I upgraded mine with the stuff he says you can use in about 30 minutes. Everything worked fine and it was all just the cheapest thing they had in the store. And while I didn't upgrade the ram I looked and there is a free slot, standard size for DDR-Ram.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beware the Disposable Computer
While HP's generally work nicely as a consumer computer, you WILL have problems if you:

(1) Try to add more memory and/or hard-disks -- the HP cases
are crammed full and you will have fun trying to fit your
new stuff in.

(2) Try to replace anything that goes out -- HP unfortunately
is not using standard parts for things like power
supplies; so, if yours goes out, it is not an easy or
inexpensive matter to replace it; it is easier and
cheaper to simply DISPOSE of a non-functioning HP and
get a new one.

Still, if you want something that works out of the box and would rather buy something new if you need to upgrade or change, HP is a reasonable computer to get. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

HP's new Pavilion a400n Desktop PC is a cost-conscious system best suited to light and medium home and home office duties. Certainly not ideal for upscale pursuits such as 3-D animated graphics, high-end 3-D games or demanding multitasking, the Pavilion a400n is nevertheless a good bet for those who can do without state-of-the-art power or amenities but require lots of storage space and a rock bottom price point.

Driven by a reasonably peppy 2.7 GHz Celeron processor and a minimal alloent of 256 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory, the Pavilion a400n isn't intended to keep up with the latest Pentium 4-infused units but will certainly suffice for the majority of tasks it will be asked to perform. HP has enclosed an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, and a large 80 GB hard drive on which to store all your files and programs. The system features two optical drives -- a CD-RW drive and a DVD drive -- thus allowing you to burn and play audio CDs, archive files to compact disc, watch DVD movies, and quickly copy files from one CD to another. In this stock configuration, DVD writing is not supported.

Other key amenities include a front panel-mounted 7-in-1 digital card reader for accessing memory cards from devices such as PDAs and digital cameras, six high-speed USB 2.0 ports (one of the front) for exchanging information with external devices such as scanners and external drives, two FireWire ports (one on the front) for fast interaction with digital camcorders, two available PCI slots, a front-mounted microphone and headphone port, and six-speaker surround sound audio support. The package does not feature a speaker system or a monitor, thus allowing you to choose from the many alternatives currently available.

Communication facilities include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up surfing and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface for high-speed e-communications. An HP Internet keyboard and HP mouse with convenient scrolling wheel complete the hardware picture.

The bundled software package features such essentials as the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center, and a variety of multimedia and security utilities. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

One of the most affordable computers in the entire Compaq roster, the Presario S4100nx Desktop PC is a perfect low-cost solution for light home and home office applications. Serious gamers and businesspeople should look elsewhere, but for word processing, homework, Internet surfing and the occasional DVD movie, the Presario S4100nx is a wise and fiscally sensible choice.

Sporting a 2.50 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256 MB PC2100 DRR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario S4100nx delivers good value but is far removed from Compaq’s top-of-the-line Presario 8000T series. To store and transfer your data, Compaq has equipped the unit with a surprisingly large 80 GB hard drive (more than enough space for most users), a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing.

The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, and a whopping half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has also enclosed a convenient Presario Internet keyboard and standard non-scrolling Presario mouse, but has not equipped the unit with a viewing monitor, wireless networking, or a FireWire port (a common data link with external devices such as digital camcorders).

The impressive bundled software package features Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Money 2003, Intuit Quicken Financial Center, and several audio-video utilities. Monitor and speakers are sold separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice machine for small spaces.
Everyone that sees my Vaio V-200G is immediately impressed with the stylish design. They're even more impressed when they learn that the compact monitor is ALL THERE IS to the entire system. Me and my friends stopped fighting over the television when I hooked this one up to cable. I also recorded my favorite shows and didn't worry about missing them due to work. The display is sharp and vivid. Hook up a surround sound speaker system to this and you'll have a nice theatre presentation while watching DVD movies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Elegant, space saving solution
Our workstation area didn't allow a traditional pc setup with separate monitor & cpu. Our first thought for an upgrade from our aging laptop was an iMac, but we didn't want to deal with the change in operating system. This model very nicely filled our needs without taking up a ton of space. The wireless keyboard & mouse also go in a drawer when not in use, so the system takes up next to no space. Great little performer...

1-0 out of 5 stars AVOID THIS SONY!
The product rating should be less than zero!

Have had two of this model in the last two months and both failed miserable. The motherboard developed serious problems on the first one very soon after bringing it home and the second lasted a few hours before the DVD/CD stopped operating. We bought the brand name, Sony. Now that name is one we will avoid. ... Read more

The Basics

  • Processor: The 2.80 GHz Intel Celeron processor offers fast and affordable performance which is perfect for everyday computing tasks--from making entries in Quicken to word processing to editing home digital video movies. It has a front-side bus (FSB) speed of 400 MHz and an L2 cache of 128 KB.
