Amazon.com Product Description

If you're looking for a system that doesn't have a lot of whistles and bells but is a good general-use computer, check out eMachines' eTower Desktop. It features a 1 GHz Celeron processor, 128 MB of RAM, a 20 GB hard disk, a CD-RW drive, an Intel Direct 3-D graphics card, and a 56K modem. A monitor isn't included in this system, and neither is a network interface card. However, it does come loaded with Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft's new operating system that combines the stability of Windows 2000 with better support for peripherals and games, plus a new user interface. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Effective little machine
Got this machine for myself Christmas 2001 as a bundle for $560 after rebates at a store in Tucson. Admittedly I've upgraded it quite a bit, but you can't beat the efficiency for the price. I wanted a cheap machine with potential to upgrade, as I've found this is a cheaper method than buying a packed system. For downloading and light application processing the 1Ghz Celeron easily does the job. I've now added 256mb of ram, 60gb hard drive storage, an ethernet card, and a dvd player. All the upgrades cost me $319 with free shipping right here on Amazon.com. I got my new Linksys cable modem and router here too for less than $100 dollars a piece. The machine has responded beautifully to the upgrades and I have since made it the workhorse of my home network. Overall I give it 4 stars because any company that sells windows XP with 128mb ram doesn't deserve 5. Any serious user would tell you the same, but if you have some patience when browsing through folders and such you'll be fine with the 128. And the eMachines tech support is a joke, but with this computer you shouldn't have to contact them with any hardware issues. Well, you can't beat the capabilities for the listed price and you can't beat my machine for ... after upgrades ANYWHERE!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic value for a great price
I bought this system as a bundle with monitor and printer from Best Buy for $479 and it's been incredible! Better than I expected and I even took my savings and added the extended warranty so I could have it serviced locally rather than shipping it to the manufacturer (one e-machines drawback). I just have to watch the CD-RW to make sure it doesn't get too warm. (I was forewarned this is an e-machines drawback) I did get a good response when I called their customer service after I did not receive my rebate--they were friendly and responded right away and did not keep me on hold for a long time--and I did finally receive my rebate! It burns great sounding CDs, and XP has been great--so if you just need an all-purpose system, this is definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars bang for your buck
I bought the whole system with a yr of msn free for 499.00.
No problems so far runs like a charm.... ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Compaq's Presario 4410US desktop computer is a great option for thosewho can't afford or don't require the speed and power of a priceystate-of-the-art machine. Powered by a reliable Intel 1.3 GHz Celeron processorwith 256 KB of Level 2 cache, 128 MB of 133 MHz SDRAM, and an 8 MB acceleratedvideo card, the 4410US offers plenty of oomph for applications such as datamanagement, word processing, Internet surfing, and some 3-D graphic design. Itdistinguishes itself from the slightly less expensive Presario 4400US by virtueof its integrated DVD-ROM drive, which at 16x is fast enough to capablyreproduce anything Hollywood has to offer.

Although the 4410US is not ideal for demanding 3-D applications such as high-endCAD design or gaming, it is far from a bare-bones machine. Compaq has takenadvantage of recent hard drive price drops to equip the unit with a sizable 40GB hard drive. It has included a fast 24x (write) CD-RW drive for recording andplaying music and archiving data, a 3.5-inch disk drive for archiving andtransferring smaller amounts of data, and a SoundMax III digital audio card forclean, accurate sound. A spare bay is reserved for future drive expansion, fourUSB ports for fun plug-and-play peripherals such as digital cameras andjoysticks, a parallel port for non-plug-and-play printers, and a serial port forolder mice and external modems.

Online fans will love the unit's incorporated Compaq Internet keyboard. Inaddition to the standard array of keys, it also offers several supplementarybuttons for convenient one-touch access to e-mail functions and favoriteInternet sites. Even the system's mouse is equipped with a Web-ready scrollwheel for easier navigation. An integrated 56K modem delivers basic Internetconnection speed.

In order to keep the price as low as it is, Compaq has not outfitted the 4410USwith a monitor or speakers. Prospective customers are thus given the freedom ofselecting separate components, a perfect situation for those who favor a certainbrand or style or may already own such equipment from a previous system. A copyof the latest and most stable Microsoft operating system, Windows XP, and avariety of multimedia, data protection, and Internet applications complete thepackage. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Vaio PCV-RS510 offers everything you need to wrangle your multimedia collection and good power for multimedia software and PC games. Featuring a fast Hyper-Threaded 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, the PCV-RS510 also offers a built-in DVD+/-RW writer, 512 MB installed RAM, a large 120 GB hard drive, and a wealth of digital audio, photo, and video software. With Click to DVD, you can import your camcorder's digital video and burn directly to DVD. For a step up in price, the Sony Vaio PCV-RS520 offers a stronger video card, a 160 GB hard drive, 3 GHz processor, and CD-RW drive (instead of CD-ROM) in addition to the DVD+/-RW writer.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The large 120 GB ATA-100 (7200 RPM) hard drive offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos, and MP3 collection as well as enough space for editing digital video files.
  • Processor: The 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) will be fast enough to handle editing of home and amateur digital video. It also has a 1 MB L2 cache and an FSB (front-side bus) speed of 800 MHz.
  • Memory: The installed 512 MB of RAM (PC-2700 DDR, 333 MHz) is sufficient for starting out, but you'll want to add more memory power to take full advantage of the PCV-RS510's multimedia capabilities (it's expandable to 2.0 GB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with two optical drives: a DVD+/-RW and CD-ROM drive. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 4x write/2x rewrite/2x read speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 4x write/2.4x rewrite/2.4x read speed. For CDs, it has a 16x write/10x rewrite/32x read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Sony Vaio keyboard and mouse (with PS/2 connector).
Sound and Graphics
The PCV-RS510 offers an Intel 865GV integrated video/graphics card built into the motherboard and 64 MB of dynamically shared VRAM. The PCV-RS510 features an integrated AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) that is also built into the computer's main board.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a wide range of connectivity options with the PCV-RS510 (including a floppy disk drive), such as three PCI expansion slots (one available), one 8x AGP (accelerated graphics port, occupied) slot and the following external ports:

  • 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 4-pin in front and 1 6-pin in back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 RGB monitor port
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92), and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The PCV-RS510 comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents) as well as a 60-day trial for Microsoft Office 2003. Preloaded Sony software includes Click to DVD (DVD creation), PictureGear Studio (digital photo), DVgate Plus (digital video), SonicStage (digital music), and Vaio Media (Network file sharing). Other preloaded software includes InterVideo WinDVD, MoodLogic 2.5 Trial, Intuit Quicken 2004 New User Edition, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple QuickTime, RealNetworks RealOne Player, Norton Internet Security (90-day trial).

Dimensions and Weight
It measures 7.2 x 15.6 x 14.9 (W x H x D) and weighs 26.5 pounds.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony Vaio PCV-RS510 Digital Studio PC, keyboard, mouse, and set of two speakers.

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. ... Read more

167. Sony VAIO PCV-RX640
by Sony

Asin: B00006IROL
Catlog: Personal Computer
Manufacturer: Sony
Sales Rank: 1468
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Vaio PCV-RX640 Digital Studio PC is designed with digital video editing in mind, enabling you to make your own movies, burn your own music playlists to CD, surf the Web, and get your work done without budging an inch. It also sports leading-edge features like i.LINK (IEEE 1394) interfaces that enable high-speed connection to your Sony Digital Camcorder and a suite of Sony multimedia software applications. The PCV-RX640 offers a 60 GB hard drive, 1.3 HGz Intel Celeron processor, and 256 MB of installed RAM.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive (DMA/ATA-100 Ultra) is decently sized, but it is not large enough to satisfy the true potential of this multimedia machine.
  • Processor: The 1.3 GHz Intel Celeron processor is outdated and nowhere near the capabilities necessary for today's processor-intensive multimedia playback and editing software applications.
  • Memory: The installed 256 MB of SDRAM will not take you to the promised land, and the PCV-RX640 can only be expanded to 512 MB.
  • CD/DVD Drive: It comes equipped with two drives: a DVD-ROM (8x speed) and a CD-RW for saving data to disc and burning your favorite playlists to CD. The CD-RW drive has 16x write, 10x rewrite, and 40x read speeds.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Sony Vaio keyboard and mouse (with PS/2 connector).
Sound and Graphics
The integrated Intel 815E graphics/video card offers acceptable 3D and video rendering, but it is not a powerhouse (especially compared to contemporary Digital Studio PCs). It supports a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and comes with two external stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a good range of connectivity options with the PCV-RX640 (including a floppy disk drive), such as three PCI expansion slots (two available), one 8x AGP (accelerated graphics port, occupied) slot and the following external ports:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports (1 in front, 2 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players

  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 serial port
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 line in
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This PCV-RX640 comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Intuit Quicken 2002, Corel WordPerfect, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple QuickTime, RealNetworks RealOne Player, and AcrSoft PhotoPrinter.

It measures 8 x 14.2 x 14.6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 27.1 pounds.

Amazon.com Product Description

Especially well suited to home users who need a lot of processing power, the Sony Vaio PCV-RX730 desktop is a versatile system that's ready to handle many of the latest crop of internal and external PC applications and devices. Whether you're recording a CD, surfing the Internet, or filling a spreadsheet, the Vaio PCV-RX730 will help keep things humming along smoothly.

The unit offers a pleasant tradeoff between power and affordability. Rather than fitting the Vaio PCV-RX730 with a state-of-the-art processor that, in reality, may deliver more power than most users require, Sony has installed acost-effective yet powerful 1.7 GHz Intel Celeron processor with 256 KB of Level 2 cache. This capable chip is paired with a generous 256 MB of RAM and an integrated 32 MB SiS650 graphics processor. Although it won't set new speed benchmarks or efficiently handle the most demanding 3-D games, the VaioPCV-RX730 desktop will easily carve its way through most of today's popular entertainment and professional programs.

More than just an affordable workhorse, the unit is also exceedingly flexible. You'll find plenty of room to store your programs and files on its spacious 40 GB hard disk. You'll record and play audio CDs and back up your data on its integrated CD-RW drive, and load and move smaller files on its 3.5-inch floppy disk drive. And if you're looking for fast video data transfer solutions, the Vaio PCV-RX730 desktop is ready to oblige with two IEEE 1395 ports: one on the rear and another placed conveniently on the front of the case.

The unit features a variety of additional connections, including four USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a parallel "printer" port and serial port, two PS/2 ports for keyboards and mice, and line-in and line-out audio jacks. An integrated V.90 data/fax modem delivers low-speed Internet connectivity, and a 10 Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet card affords high-speed e-mail access and surfing. A PS/2 wheel mouse, Vaio Smart keyboard, and a pair of full-range desktop speakers round out the system's hardware amenities. Sony has not included a monitor with the package, allowing you to select your favorite display from the many currently available or perhaps use one already on hand.

The Vaio PCV-RX730 desktop is loaded with a variety of practical and entertainment software, including pre-installed copies of Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2002, and an assortment of Sony DVD, home movie, photo, and audio tools and utilities. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Worst CPU, they say 1.7Ghz but it calculate to 1.2GHz P4
This is the worst CPU, worst that AMD Duron.
This CPU is not really running at 1.7Ghz, the cache on this CPU is only 128, comapring to P4 512.
They say 1.7 but really runs at 1.2 GHZ or less comparing to P4 or Athlon XP.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy
I would reccommend any Sony computer. With built in Firewire(i.Link) and USB it is perfect for the digital lifestyle. And you can't beat the price for the performance. Also one thing to note. This computer comes with an open AGP port so that you can upgrade the video card. The on board video isnt that great so you may want to do that upgrade. The 740 series does not have the AGP port option so that is what makes this a great buy. Also check out the rebate... ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Compaq's expansive Presario S5000nx series of computers is intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor. This model, the Presario S5100NX Desktop PC, is the second most affordable in the series and therefore also the second least capable. Though its price is certainly right and it storage space surprisingly accommodating, it is not recommended for anything beyond general duties such as word processing, homework, CD burning and email.

The Presario S5100nx Desktop is driven by a price-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.6 GHz –- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added an acceptable allotment of RAM memory – 256 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) –- and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system will handle some 3-D graphics and a minimal amount of multitasking, but is not ready for advanced 3-D applications or demanding business applications.

To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5100nx Desktop is equipped with an adequate 80 GB hard disk (lots of room for a midsize MP3 library), a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive that supports CD burning and CD and DVD playing, but no DVD writing. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to choose from the many options available today. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal
A great computer for a cheap price. I would recommended upgrade the RAM as soon as possible to at least 512 MB. HP support is very fast and excellent. I was never on hold for more than 10 minutes. Support is from India but that probably the same for other computer manufacturers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Compaq Presario S5100NX Terrific
I recently purchased the Compaq Presario at Best Buy. What a wonderful computer. I brought it home set it up and was on my way. After having so much trouble with my Gateway computer, I was leary about which brand to purchase. Several of my friends have tried Compaq Presario and love it. (Compaq/HP are now one and the same). You get a great computer for the price. The CD-RW drive, a DVD Drive, a huge 80GB hard drive, and plenty of Ram. It's expandible up to 1GB of ram. It doesn't come with a lot of software, but a lot of trial software programs. But at this price, I'm not complaining. If your looking for a nice snappy computer and a great price I'd give this one a try. Your pocketbook will thank you.

1-0 out of 5 stars THAT'S A NEGATIVE STAR
Warning: I ordered a Compaq Presario desktop in Sep 2003 directly from Compaq and the computer would not boot up. When you need to call technical support it takes at least 45 minutes until you can speak with someone. After not getting the computer to work I had to send it back. Got another and it booted halfway and then froze up. Waited an hour to get to tech support and believe me: these people know nothing and are very unhelpful. These Compaq Presario desktops may be cheap....but that's because they are. LEMONS. Worst tech support in the computer industry. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

There was a time not so very long ago that a desktop computer in this price range was incapable of anything other than absolute basic tasks. But with the new Presario SR1010NX-B Desktop PC, Compaq proves those days are over. Virtually identical to the entry-level Presario SR1010NX but with the important additions of a display screen and speakers, the Presario SR1011NX-B won't suit demanding business environments or dedicated gaming studios but will fit right in to most home, home office or school dorm environments.

Driven by a cost-efficient Intel Celeron processor running at 2.7 GHz, a minimal alloent of 256 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video controller with up to 64 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario SR1011NX-B is definitely not a world-class speed machine or a 3-D powerhouse. However, for basic computer duties such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic communication and homework, it is more than adequate. Those who frequently multitask will need to double the system's memory, and anyone who stores large libraries of files will want to upgrade the enclosed hard disk, which at just 40 GB is comparatively smallish.

Compaq has installed a 3.5-inch diskette drive for small backups and older applications and a CD-RW optical drive through which you can load applications, play audio CDs and backup important data. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD playing or writing. Nor does it include an IEEE 1394 "FireWire" port (normally used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), though it does feature a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and gadgets such as USB-capable digital cameras and printers.

Other desirable amenities include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication, a low-speed dial-up 56K modem, a Compaq keyboard and scrolling Compaq mouse, and two free PCI slots for adding devices such as high-powered video and audio cards and additional connections. Unlike many of today's name brand computer packages, the Presario SR1011NX-B bundle also includes a monitor and desktop speaker system. The monitor, a standard 17-inch flat-screen CRT model -- not to be confused with much slimmer flat-panel LCD displays -- delivers 16 viewable inches and a dot pitch rating of .25 for clean, smooth images. The speaker system features two entry-level desktop speakers and appropriate wiring.

A desktop PC for a price like this is a bargain in anyone's books. Granted, the economical Compaq Presario S6000NX is not suitable for demanding environments such as 3-D graphic studios, multi-user offices or gaming and home entertainment setups. Still, for basic home and home office duties, this midlevel rig makes a great deal of sense.

The Presario S6000NX is driven by a cost-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.7 GHz. Compaq has added enough RAM memory for most single task situations -- 256 MB -- though users will want to double that for more intensive workouts and serious multitasking. The enclosed Intel Extreme Graphics graphics chipset features 64 MB shared video memory and as such is not as potent as graphics cards with dedicated memory. Though suitable for general 3-D tasks, it will not efficiently run most current high-end 3-D games.

The system sports average data handling capabilities. Its 40 GB hard drive is roomy enough for typical home environments but pales in comparison to the current 120-plus hard drive standard. Its optical drive allows you to play and burn audio CDs and archive your files, but doesn't support DVD functions. Yet its 3.5-inch diskette drive will allow you to back up or load smaller or older files to inexpensive diskettes.

The Presario S6000NX features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally reserved for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to customize your desktop setup from the many options available today.

The impressive software bundle includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, Microsoft Money 2004, Quicken New User's Edition 2004, and a variety of multimedia and e-communication utilities. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Compaq's Presario S5200NX Desktop PC is intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor. The system isn't particularly game-friendly, nor does it sport such luxuries as DVD burning or a FireWire port for high-speed interaction with digital camcorders. Yet its affordable price point, large hard disk and satisfactory power section make it a good low-cost alternative for many home and home office applications.

The Presario S5200nx Desktop is driven by a price-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.7 GHz –- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added a satisfactory allotment of 512 MB DRR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1 GB) and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system is not recommended for advanced 3-D graphics or heavy-duty business use.

To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5200nx Desktop is equipped with a surprisingly accommodating 120 GB hard disk (perfect for storing oodles of MP3s), a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, and a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to choose from the many options available today. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't do it!!!
I recently decided to upgrade from my Compaq Presario 400Mhz I bought a good 5 years ago. Thinking the 2.7 GHz and 512MB (plus an extra 256MB) would be great. I am totally disappointed!!

The Compaq Presario S5200NX is by far a waste of money. It is slower than you can imagine and the technical service from Compaq/HP is ZERO !

I am without a doubt totally disappointed, my only option at this point is to either purchase a new processor and see if that speeds it up or buy another computer. Since I have only had this for a couple months neither choice truely appeals to me.

If in the market for a new computer...DON'T BUY A COMPAQ PRESARIO S5200NX !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Computer
This is a good basic computer. The price is right for 120GB and 512RAM. This is a big step up from my Windows Me Emachines. I love it up to this point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great computer, easy setup
This replaces my 333cs E-tower, and it's a multi-tasking dream...RPG Games windowed with spreadsheets and music playing.....I'm one happy camper ... Read more

178. Gateway 610S Media Center PC (2.4GHz Pentium 4, 256MB RAM, 80 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD Combo Drive)
by Gateway

Asin: B0001HKIMC
Catlog: Personal Computer
Manufacturer: Gateway
Sales Rank: 465

Amazon.com Product Description

Gateway's new Media Center desktop computers are as unique as they are convenient and functional. Equipped with a big, wide LCD screen just perfect for multimedia buffs, each Media Center PC also features such welcome amenities as Intel Hyper-Threading processing, numerous high-end audio/video/data connections, and a visually distinctive, fully portable all-in-one tower-less design. This model, the Gateway 610S, is the most economical member of the Media Center series, and as such offers reduced power and capability than its two higher-priced compatriots.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610S features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has elected to keep the main memory to a minimum with this machine (just 256 MB DDR SDRAM), thus compelling those who push the unit with the latest and greatest software to upgrade to 512 or 1024 MB. Serious gamers and 3-D artists may also want to upgrade the system's 3-D video controller, an Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory, though most users should find it quite adequate.

To help you manage your data, the Gateway 610S features a fast 7200 RPM 80 GB hard disk, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and record audio CDs and play the latest Hollywood DVD blockbusters, and a handy 7-in-1 card media card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDAs and the like. In its stock form, the system does not support DVD burning.

To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, the system features a total of five high-speed USB 2.0 ports (including one mounted on the front) and an IEEE 1394 FireWire connector. Gateway has also enclosed a 5.1 line-out jack for five-speaker surround sound, a high-quality S/PDIF digital audio output, a composite A/V in, S-Video ins and outs, and an Intel 10/100 Ethernet adapter for fast network and Internet access.

The system's unique design offers several distinct advantages, not the least of which is a noticeable lack of external wiring. In fact, its large 17-inch widescreen display screen sports no wires at all, sitting instead atop a stylish integrated pedestal. Gateway has also included a wireless optical mouse, wireless keyboard, convenient wireless remote control, and built-in stereo speakers with subwoofer. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one month free access to the Napster music download site.

Amazon.com Product Description

There's a brave new world in home entertainment that doesn't include the traditional stand-alone audio-video separates. Slowly but surely, VCRs, compact disc players, DVD players and all the other gadgets and wires that have made their way into living and entertainment rooms across America are being replaced. In their stead is a single unit -- a specialized computer that handles all of the above in addition to Internet surfing, CD burning, and much more. Gateway's new FMC-901 Family Media Center PC is one such device.

Designed in a horizontal rather than vertical format much like many of the units it replaces, the FMC-901 is built to reside comfortably in a standard entertainment center, conveniently receiving its user input via a wireless keyboard or wireless, handheld remote control and cordless mouse. The latter two are of particular interest in that they respond to mid-air gestures -- you can program the remote to increase system volume whenever you raise you arm, for example.

Compared to mainstream business and high-end gaming PCs, the FMC-901 isn't a true powerhouse. Driven by a 2.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor running at 2.6 GHz and 256 MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM memory, the system's "nerve center" is somewhat less than state-of-the-art. However, its graphics card is an nVidia FX5200 with 128 MB memory for solid 3-D gaming performance. Furthermore, the unit features a variety of high-end outputs designed to maximize the quality of your sound and video. With S-Video, VGA and DVI outs, you're assured of having the best connection for whatever monitor or television you're watching. And with four high-speed USB 2.0 ports, three IEEE1394 FireWire connections, a digital SPDIF optical audio out and S-Video and composite A/V ins, you'll have the ideal interfaces for virtually anything.

The FMC-901 features a fast 7200 RPM 80 GB hard drive for smooth television broadcast recording, a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs and watch the latest DVD movies, and an integrated TV tuner. Communication options include a built-in 56K dial-up modem and 10/100 Ethernet for high-speed networking and Internet access. DVD writing is not supported.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one-month free access to the Napster music download site.

This model, the Gateway 610X, is the midlevel member of the Media Center series, and as such offers a good balance between cost and power and far superior 3-D graphics capability than the base model Gateway 610S.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610X features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has added a solid allotment of memory -- 512 MB DDR SDRAM -- and a top-level graphics card in the ATI Radeon 9200 AGP with 128 MB dedicated (not shared) video memory. Even serious gamers and 3-D artists should feel at home with this system.

To help you manage your data, the Gateway 610X features a potent 7200 RPM 120 GB hard disk, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and record audio CDs and play the latest Hollywood DVD blockbusters, and a handy 7-in-1 card media card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDAs and the like. 5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Ever
This machine will change your life. No more rushing home to watch a show, picking up five remotes trying to figure out which ones which, shssing your spouse until the important part of the show passes, switching CDs in your player, hooking the video camera up to the VCR to watch it, having a stack of stereo components, pulling out photo albums, etc. I could go on and on. This new design is extraordinary. My wife is nuts for this for it's simplicity. Stop reading this and buy one immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything most people need
The sleek look and ease of use of the Gateway FMC-901 make it a great choice if you want the features of a Media Center Edition PC but don't want a clunky PC in the family room.
I couldn't see paying the extra price tag on the 901X just to get the Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card and the DVD burner. So if playing games and recording to DVD media isn't important, the lower cost unit may be suitable for most needs. ... Read more
