5-0 out of 5 stars Great product
i have owned this product since april of 2002, and i am more than satisfied. Performance is great and i have never had a problem with this machine. Highly Reccomended

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine
I did read the many reviews on this site about how slow the hard drive is and how the video card was no good. Unfortunately I read it all AFTER I bought the machine.

How wrong those reviews are. This machine is VERY fast, and can handle very graphic intensive games. Examples: I tried Return to Castle Wolfenstein on this while running a file sharing program. No problem. I ran some mathematical simulation on it for about 12 hours (think 100% CPU utilization). No problem. Video playback flawless. My previous machine was a workstation with a 7200 RPM scsi drive on it and the only thing I notice different on this machine is that it is MUCH quieter than my previous.

I've owned several sony computers over the last 5 years. I can vouch for their quality after drops, dozens of trips with them, and hours of very intensive use. THis machine, after 2 months 'hammering' it, is holding up great. ... Read more

Powerful enough for any business environment but best suited to a home setting where its wealth of multimedia and entertainment amenities may be fully exploited, Sony's top-of-the-line PC and most luxurious Digital Studio to date is ready for many years of upgrade-free computing.

If speed is what you crave, the VAIO PCV-RZ36G delivers. Outfitted with a lightning fast 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), and a stunning 1 GB of premium PC-2700 333 MHz DDR memory, the system is perfect for those who drive their computers beyond reasonable expectations. Sony has even addressed the Achilles Heel of most out-of-the-box desktops by enclosing a 128 MB nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card with w/TV-Out to handle high-end 3-D games and applications.

When it comes to the storage and movement of data, Sony has left nothing to chance. The VAIO PCV-RZ36G is fitted with an enormous 160 GB hard disk for your frequently accessed programs and files, a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications, and a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest cinematic releases and create your own DVDs. 2-0 out of 5 stars concerning the restore disk
i found out the same results you cant use your media restore disc but i did foind out you can get the full system restore disc fom sony its a two dvd set for $17.99 plus tax and shipping
remeber to refer to the model number pcv rz36g its still available

3-0 out of 5 stars Less than I expected for the money
After looking at other systems in the same category, I think I paid to much for what is otherwise a sound hardware configuration. The system could use an upgraded sound card and the speakers are a little on the cheap side as well.

For those of use who HATE XP Home, the upgrade process to XP Professional is a little painful. I made the recovery media and than wiped out the system to load a clean version of XP Professional. Because of the way the recovery media is designed I could not install any of the Sony provided applications onto the newly loaded system. Sony recommended reloading the recovery media onto the system and then upgrading to XP Pro. This resulted in a very messy system full of lots of items I don't use and don't want. There is also a problem reloading Gigapocket, but if you fool with the system you can get it reloaded.

If I had to do it all over again I would consider other vendors or buy a custom configured system from Sony's website. I had originally tried to build my own system on Sony Style, but they were delayed several weeks due to a lack of parts. I canceled the Sony Style order and purchased this system from another retailer.

I have purchased this system and a Dell in the last three years. I was much happier with my Dell buying experience though I did not find a Dell that had the editing features that came with this system. Sony seems unfriendly to more advanced users and they spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to avoid helping you. I would love to upgrade some parts of my system (specifically the sound), but so far I have found Sony less than helpful in this regard as well.

I originally purchased this system for transferring my home videos to DVD. The video quality from my analog DVD player was pretty bad, but I am not sure if this is because of Gigapocket or because of the Sharp video recorder I own. Either way, this did not workout as I had hoped.

The Adobe tools for this system are not the full version though you can upgrade for several hundred dollars more. I found Adobe Premier 6 LE to be very useful once I learned how to use it. For several hundred dollars more you can get the full version, but I am not sure that most home users will find that expense worth the effort.

For most people the Microsoft Works that comes with this system is inadequate. For those who have school age kids, power point and Excel are excellent additions to the system. Because this system comes with Microsoft Works you may have issues (as I did) configuring other Office Products on this system. You should make sure that Sony will support your system if you upgrade to another version of Office.

Expect very little paper documentation to come with your system. The help file that Sony loads on the system and the help files from the vendor are all you have to go on. This can make learning the system a little difficult. I still don't know what the fiber optic port is for and I have no idea what the Gigapocket specifications are.

The system gets high marks for performance but gets low marks for documentation and cost. I would only buy this system if it is exactly what you want. Any changes will be difficult and may result in support issues when dealing with Sony support. I believe a little searching would give you more features for less money. If I had it to do over again I would not buy this specific system put would probably still consider a custom configured Sony or maybe an HP which also has some nice multimedia systems.

3-0 out of 5 stars WATCH OUT!!!
I (myself) have the problem after recovering its original system from either created media kit or the image (in hard drive). When I turned on the PC for the first time, the reminding message alerted me to make the recovery media kit. After doing that, three times, one DVD and one CD, and two times making recovery CDs with 8 CDs in case of writing any errors, I tried to replace the original hard disk drive with the new one because I didn't want to have any mistake with the original one. During the installation, the message appeared that it can't execute from the exteranl device H:\GIGA400313909.EXE -GUI. I re-installed again and again but the same problem still persisted. Finally, I put back its origianl hard drive then played around with Giga pocket, it functioned properly. But when I decided to make the system recovery from the internal image just following the instruction, the same problem happened the same thing. FINNALY, I DON'T HAVE GIGA POCKET ANY MORE. Plus, its optical drives seem to work very hard (kind of error - make noise - unable to duplicate my home DVD movie using veritas software except using Roxio 6). I am so disappoited to see that no system CDs come with the product and its integrated sound card.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent Computer
Before I bought this computer, I have owned HP computers. They were of great quality and served me well. When we had to get a new one, we initialy went for a new HP, but Compusa was out. So, we decided to go and buy the other 3 gig computer. It was this sony. It wasn't my first choice, but it is an excelent computer! It is fast, has plenty of memory, comes loaded with an OK graphics card, and is much nicer looking than other computers on the market. Sure it is a little pricey, but the speed and it's versatility are what you pay for. Sony's are made to last and I'm sure this beast will dominate as long as it's the fastest avalible! ... Anchoring the unit is a powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading is a new Intel-developed process that allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking). 1-0 out of 5 stars Recommended is 8X DVD ROM/ 16X DVD ROM.
I notice this machine has a '64MB dedicated video memory' card, and everything else is great, except the 'DVD ROM' speed. This machine operates at '2X DVD ROM',which is way to slow, that probably accounts for the bad performance with 'high-end software'. '8X DVD ROM' speed should always be the minimal,'16X DVD ROM' speed being your fastest. Ideal minimal set-up: P4 2.6 w/400 MHz FSB,512MB RAM Memory,ATI Radeon 64MB(dedicated video memory),8X DVD ROM,'Windows XP Home Edition'. This is the bare minimum to operate 'high-end software'. Oh yes, remember to stay away from 'Shared(Integrated) video memory' cards, they come in both 'ATI Radeon' and 'G-Force'. The problem with 'shared' is they 'crash' your computer after 2 minutes, whether your playing a 'DVD movie' or 'high-end software',no problems with 'Dedicated(Allocated) video memory',runs like the 'Energizer Bunny',keeps on going. Another thing is to remain at '512MB Ram memory',if your 'RAM Memory' is higher or lower than '512MB RAM Memory',your computer will 'crash' after 2 minutes! This goes for any brand of computer you buy, buyer, beware!

3-0 out of 5 stars Great for on-line or work -- Gamers should stay away
Clarification of how this product was rated...
+ One star for gamers or heavy media users
+ Four stars for home office applications

I usually start out with the pro's, but given the seriousness (or even worse, silliness) of the cons, I am going to start with those...

Cons...
1) Virtually no software *of value* is delivered with this machine. Except those items that are automatically bundled with Windows XP (MS Works, Explorer, Windows Media Player, etc), you're on your own when it comes to software. As a matter of fact, there was so little software, I originally thought someone forgot to load it. A brief call to the Sony help line (22 minute wait for a rep) quickly cleared this up.
2) The cabling for the mouse, speakers, and keyboard is uncommonly short. Fully eighteen inches shorter than the cables that came with the PC that the Sony is replacing. I really have to question the decision making process that Sony used here.
3) The speakers that came with the machine are not even worth plugging in. The thin sound delivered is accompanied by noticeable crackles (on new CDs) and they even distort the music. This is especially disappointing given Sony's heritage of excellence in audio products.
4) The issue with the sound, coupled with a weak video card, is why I suggest gamers stay away. Although for a little more money, you can pick up some decent speakers and a video card that would make this PC rock

Pros...
1) The tightest boxing and packaging of a PC that I have ever seen (this is my 7th or 8th PC). Gives me a warm and fuzzy that this thing is built to last.
2) When I checked under the hood, with the exception of the weak video card, everything looked to be of very high quality.
3) Great form factor -- the box looks great and they have packed a lot of power into a surprisingly small space -- great for those with limited desk space
4) USB slots to spare (I have found 6, the documentation suggests there are 8)
5) I am unfortunately still only able to get dial-up service, but the v.92 compatible modem coupled with the 512 MB of RAM and 2.8 Ghz CPU clock speed (with hyperthreading) make it seem like the internet is loading much, much faster
6) Easy set-up (important if you're a first time buyer!)
7) Buttery smooth operation for both the DVD recorder and CD-RW drives -- and both are wicked fast
8) Lightening fast handling of word processor and spreadsheet applications

Net/net: questionable cost savings decisions by Sony turned what could have been an awesome PC-for-the-home product into a sometimes silly, sometimes smoking solution for all but gamers.

3-0 out of 5 stars Light on Software
I purchased a Sony Vaio 420 to put next to my two Gateways and two Dells. The hardware is fast (I guess), but I can't tell the difference over my 1.6 GHZ Compaq with the exception of the COMBO DVD+-RW/CD RW, which is much slower. My upgraded Compaq with a TDK 52 CDRW is twice as fast at burning CDs as the VAIO Combo DVD/CD. That was disappointing, but it does burn both DVD+ and -. So for CD burning, I use my Compaq. I'm thinking about moving my CD burner over to the Sony. The ATI 9200 Video Card is really an "LE." Looking this up on the ATI site, it is a scaled down version of the ATI 9200. I thought I was getting a full up 9200. Might want to upgrade this too, but I have not noticed any problems. The software package is really disappointing. I had expected more from Sony, a leader in media. Almost every media package will need replacing in my opinion. This includes image editing (I recommend JASC Paintshop Pro 8); Video Editing, and CD/DVD burning (I recommend NERO 6). Bottom Line: fast hardware for a low price (except DVD/CD burner); disappointing software package. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Vaio PCV-RZ54G is a full-fledged desktop PC--but it's also a television, a DVD player, an FM and Internet radio, and a personal video recorder. It's powered by the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 operating system (compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV, and antenna), and it features a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor (with Hyper Threading technology), extra-large 200 GB hard drive, and 512 MB of installed memory. For an even more powerful Media Center, you can step up to the Sony Vaio PCV-RZ56G with a 3.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor, a 250 GB hard drive, and 1 GB of installed RAM.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The massive 200 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage for all your media storage--from digital audio to TV programs.
  • Processor: The 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) is one of the fastest processors currently available on the market. It is well suited for high-performance gaming and professional-quality image, audio, and video editing. It also has A 512 KB L2 cache and an 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB).
  • Memory: The PCV-RZ54G comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (2 x 256 MB DDR SDRAM, 400 MHz)--a decent amount for starters, but you'll want to add more to take full advantage of the capabilities of Windows XP Media Center. The motherboard has a maximum memory expansion of 2 GB.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The PCV-RZ54G has two optical drives. The DVD-/+RW drive is compatible with both DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs as well as CD-RW. Both DVD-RW and DVD+RW discs write at 8x, rewrite at 4x, and read at 8x. You can record and rewrite CDs at 24x speed (and read them at 32x). It also features a 16x DVD-ROM drive.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Vaio keyboard and optical mouse (PS/2).
Sound and Graphics
The supplied NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 video card has a 128 MB dedicated video memory and includes a TV-out connection. It also features DVI (digital visual interface) connectivity, which enables you to output a digital signal to compatible flat panel monitors.

Sound is delivered via a Creative Sound Blaster Audigy audio card, which delivers high-quality 5.1 channels of digital surround sound. The newer Audigy 2 card has 24-bit, 96 Hz recording capability and is preferred for professional-quality audio recording.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The PCV-RZ54G has three PCI expansion slots (none available), one AGP (accelerated graphics port, occupied) slot and the following external ports:

  • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 4-pin in front and 1 6-pin in back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA/DVI monitor port
  • Multi-format memory card reader that is compatible with CompactFlash (Type I/II), MicroDrive, Memory Stick, and SmartMedia cards.
This desktop features a Gigabit Ethernet network adapter, capable of transferring large amounts of data 10 times faster than 100Mbps Fast Ethernet. It also comes with a floppy disk drive and an integrated 56K modem (V.92).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as TiVo or ReplayTV). You can even pause or rewind (up to 7 seconds) FM radio broadcasts.

Record and watch your TV programs with the Personal Video Recorder powered by Giga Pocket Engine. With the pre-installed Click to DVD software, you can turn your digital photos into a slideshow and burn it to DVD. You can plug in your analog video source (camcorder or VCR) and transfer video to DVD, or store it on the hard drive as a digital file.

Other preloaded software includes Adobe Premiere LE, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Sony Screenblast Acid, Sony Screenblast Sound Forge, Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Office 2003 (60-day trial), InterVideo WinDVD, and Intuit Quicken 20042 New User Edition.

Dimensions and Weight
It measures 7.75 x 15 x 15.4 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 30.86 pounds.

What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony VAIO PCV-RZ54G Digital Studio PC, speakers (stereo) w/subwoofer, IR remote control and receiver, IR blaster, VAIO keyboard, and PS/2 optical mouse.

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.

1-0 out of 5 stars Watch out for this one!
My husband and I purchased one of these to do dv recording and to convert to and edit mpeg2 files. Each time we tried to play a video in mpeg2 format - and we tried with multiple files - it REBOOTED THE MACHINE! (XP was set to reboot after a fatal error - but even when this was turned off, we still got a fatal error). After we spent hours and hours on the phone with tech support, trying multiple solutions, they concluded it had a faulty video chipset. Needless to say, we returned the pc immediately and got our $$ back. Doesn't Sony do QA testing on a common format like mpeg2??? All I can say is, I hope not many of these machines came out of the box like this one!

3-0 out of 5 stars Rz54G Gigabit Ethernet slow
I purchased the Sony VAIO RZ54G and like the machine for the most part. I noticed that my home network was very slow though. I found that the GIGABIT ETHERNET built into the SOny was configured for 10MB/s (1% of it's max rate). My network only supports 100MB/s so I figured it should easily handle 100MB/S if it can do 10 times that... right? Wrong. I worked with support for two days reconfiguring the system and trying every immaginable option in the ethernet controller. We tried to clean install and even had the mother board replaced but still no more than 10MB/s. I can plug in my old dell or my wife's laptop and connect at 100MB/s no problem. Sony washed their hands and said I can put in an aftermarket ethernet card if I want this work. That is not an acceptable solution in my mind. Not happy with their cutomer dis-service.

3-0 out of 5 stars XP Media Center need improvement go with the RS series
I bought the RZ50CG custom configure with comprable specs as the RZ54G. Sent it back because even though it says it's a Gigapocket desktop, it is not. It runs on the Gigapocket engine, but with Windows XP Media Center. The difference is noticeable.

Gigapocket is exactly like having a TV, where you can adjust color by right clicking on the screen, input your video device via the composite or S-video cable and have Gigapocket detect it the same way it would if you plugged it into your TV and used the TV/Video select button to view your recordings.

XP Media Center doesn't allow you to do that. You have to go through and reconfigure your settings each time, and then reconfigure it back to be able to play your TV channels (cable).

The benefit with the RZ is that you get the 9600 ATI Radeo video card vs. the 9200 in the RS model. The other benefit of the RZ model is the 5.1 capable Soundblaster Audigy card. You can't get that in the RS, but you can always add it if you want to.

The RS is the way to go if you're looking for seamless video to DVD recording or playback.

If you're going to spend the money, make the investment to get 1gb of RAM.

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love It!!!
I purchased this computer about a month ago. It's amazing!!! It even has something like TiVo built in to the computer so you can record tv programs and pause live tv. It is super fast (it has a 3.2 ghz processor) and a very large hard drive. This computer is just a lot of fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice computer, but the power supply is lacking
Before you buy this PC, just beware; The power supply that comes with it is only 295 watts of power. That probably means nothing to people who just want a computer but don't want to upgrade. For those of us who do, the 295 watts may limit whats being put into the case such as more powerful graphics processors, more PCI boards, etc. Also, even if you wanted to change it out, the speakers that come with it use the DC power out from it so the speakers are useless even if you can find another one to fit its size in the back.
Now if none of this concerns you, then this PC is king. The hard drive is huge so you can save all your TV shows using the Gigapocket recorder, the speed of the processor is fast enough for any video editing, the DVD drives will record just about anything you throw at it, and the Radeon 9600XT is an amazing midrange graphics card. All in all, this PC is great for the amount of money spent on it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony’s stylish and inventive Vaio PCV-W10 may just represent the next big step in desktop computing. In contrast to the bulky multicomponent setup of a traditional PC, the Vaio PCV-W10 sports a sleek all-in-one, fold-open design that more closely resembles a notebook. Fashionable, functional, and space-efficient, Sony’s latest PC is a revolutionary jump into the future that could change the way you compute.

The PCV-W10 is not built to satisfy the true power user. Although it does feature an impressive 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB) and a large 60 GB hard drive, the unit is constrained somewhat by a serviceable but far from state-of-the-art 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor and a 32 MB SiS 650 integrated graphics chip. Well suited to most home and home office use, Internet surfing, light gaming, and many basic business-related tasks, the PCV-W10 is nevertheless not ideal for high-end, graphics-based rendering applications or the latest crop of 3-D games.

It is, however, ready to satisfy fans of multimedia entertainment. Included inside the PCV-W10 is a combination CD-R/CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the system’s 15.3-inch LCD viewing screen for its DVD-friendly 16:9 wide aspect ratio. Music aficionados can play their CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the PCV-W10 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface, a Sony Vaio keyboard and hassle-free optical mouse, three lightning-quick USB 2.0 ports for the new breed of plug-and-play peripherals, and a high-speed IEEE 1394 interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft’s Windows XP operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, and a broad range of Internet, multimedia, and antivirus and recovery software. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Especially well suited to multimedia mavens, the Sony Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop is a versatile system that's ready to handle virtually all the latest crop of internal and external PC applications and devices. Whether you're watching a Hollywood blockbuster, uploading and editing a home movie, recording a CD, or filling a spreadsheet, the Vaio PCV-RX741 will help keep things humming along smoothly.

The unit offers a pleasant tradeoff between power and affordability. Rather than fitting the Vaio PCV-RX741 with a state-of-the-art processor that, in reality, may deliver more power than most users require, Sony has installed acost-effective yet powerful 1.53 GHz AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with 128 KB of Level 1 cache and 256 KB of Level 2 cache. This capable chip is paired with a generous 512 MB of RAM and an integrated 32 MB SiS740 graphics processor. Although it won't set new speed benchmarks or efficiently handle the most demanding 3-D games, the Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop will easily carve its way through most of today's popular entertainment and professional programs.

More than just an affordable workhorse, the unit is also exceedingly flexible. You'll find plenty of room to store your programs and files on its spacious 60 GB hard disk. You'll record and play audio CDs and back up your data on its integrated 40x/24x/10x CD-RW drive, load and move smaller files on its 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, and play DVD movies on its 16x DVD-ROM drive. And if you're looking for fast video data transfer solutions, the Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop is ready to oblige with two IEEE 1395 ports: one on the rear and another placed conveniently on the front of the case.

The unit features a variety of additional connections, including four USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a parallel "printer" port and serial port, two PS/2 ports for keyboards and mice, and line-in and line-out audio jacks. An integrated V.90 data/fax modem delivers low-speed Internet connectivity, and a 10 Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet card affords high-speed e-mail access and surfing. A PS/2 wheel mouse, Vaio Smart keyboard, and a pair of full-range desktop speakers round out the system's hardware amenities. Sony has not included a monitor with the package, allowing you to select your favorite display from the many currently available or perhaps use one already on hand.

The Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop is loaded with a variety of practical and entertainment software, including pre-installed copies of Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2002, and an assortment of Sony DVD, home movie, photo, and audio tools and utilities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Top Of the line.
I have been using this system for a while now, I must say it is very fast! I did some comperasment to Penium4 1.8 Nothwood.
The Athlon 1800+ smoked Penium4 in almost evry aspect.
Without a doubt AThlon XP is much faster from Peniums (same clock) Athlon have diffrent architecture from Penium4, they meke more operation per second thats why the are faster.
Athlon XP + Windows XP = Extreeme Perfomace

1-0 out of 5 stars Yesterday's news
Give me a break! The Athlon 1800+ (which only runs at 1.50GHZ - don't be fooled) is a dinosaur. It is more than 1GHZ behind the top of the line. Why spend over a grand for this when you can get a 2GHz + machine for the same money?

And the graphics on this thing are even worse - ancient technology from a tiny chipset company. Did you know that the embeded graphics (not a card) doesn't even have it's own memory? It steals it from your main memory.

Stay away from this thing - it's too little for too much.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not bad but there are better options
First off if you are a serious gamer and don't plan on upgrading the video card, look elsewhere. Sony does a good job at outfitting their desktops with good features and software for home users, however the graphics sub-system on their low to mid priced desktops (Sis Real256) is not for playing the latest games at high quality settings. Their high-end systems (RX780-790) have entry level gaming cards that will play the latest games for another 6-12 months at high quality settings (a Geforce 4MX, which a cleverly renamed GeForce2).

Okay, if you are still interested in a Sony then this isn't a bad choice. However as a "budget" oriented computer the pricing is on this system out of line with the rest of their lower end value line (RV74* series). I suggested instead:

For ... less you can get the RX740 with the same basic features (same CPU, graphics sub-system, software, etc) just half the memory (256M). Since you can by 256M of PC-2100 DDR for ... and stick it in two minutes, this makes more sense to me.

If you want a fairly powerful desktop for home video, music, and moderate gaming, then spend ... more and get one of the 750 series like this:

RX755 - 2 GHZ P4, 512M DDR-Ram, all the features of the above system and a few more.

Frankly I think that right now the P4 is a better investment in the long term. The Athlon CPU line doesn't support SSE2 (special instructions that speed up software), has a much slower memory sub-system (about 1/2 the bandwidth), and less on-die cache than a P4 (again about 1/2). The Athlon used to be a better value for your money, but with 1.5GHz Athlons (aka "Model 1800") selling for just ...less than a 2.0 GHz P4 it seems crazy not to spend the few extra bucks and get an extra year of life out of your computer. Plus whereas Athlons are designed to last for about 5 years, P4s are designed to last over 10, something to think about if you want to pass this system on to a relative or kid in a few years.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good system.
This is the first time I have given 5 stars to a Sony PC. In the past, I have found most of them to be overpriced, but this time they have hit the price-point on a very capable machine. This unit has as its heart the AMD Athalon 1800 chip, which effectively gives it a speed of 1.5 gigahertz. This is enough for any task you'll need to run. Its RAM is a very fast (DDR) 512 megabytes, while its video card is a respectable 32 megs (this may be the Achilles Heel here, but a new card for serious gamers or folks running CAD pgms isn't hard to buy or install). There is a good CD burner, an ample 60 gig hard drive and some nice speakers as well. A monitor needs to be added, and for a PC like this, the now much cheaper 17" flat panels (look at the Envision for a good bargain) would make for a great match. Kudos to Sony for making an affordable machine (that's nice to look at too) that 99% of PC users will be happy with as shipped. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's VAIO PCV-RS210 delivers strong processing power and solid general performance at a very reasonable price. In its stock configuration, the VAIO PCV-RS210 won't allow you to burn DVD's or play the most recent 3-D games, but it's otherwise quite satisfactory for typical computer tasks.

Anchoring the VAIO PCV-RS210 is a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU. This is a relatively fast desktop processor, especially when running in conjunction with the system's generous allotment of 512 MB of memory (upgradeable to 1 GB). Sony has skimped just a bit on the 3-D capabilities by installing an Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared memory. Though the unit will handle all 2-D and some 3-D tasks, it will require a graphics card upgrade to plow through the latest high-end 3-D apps.

Sony has equipped the VAIO PCV-RS210 with an adequate 80 GB 7200 hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a convenient DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders and cameras, scanners, and external drives, the system also features four high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two i.Link (FireWire) ports, one on the rear and another at the front.

The VAIO PCV-RS210 features numerous other amenities, including a VGA monitor port, two PS/2 ports, a pair of freestanding stereo speakers, a user-friendly VAIO keyboard, and a PS/2 wheel mouse. Sony has not included a monitor, thus allowing you to utilize your current display or select from the many alternatives currently available. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2003, and several Sony multimedia utilities. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

When Sony first introduced its "W" series of VAIO desktop computers, it proved that PCs didn't have to be big, bulky and confusing. Sporting a sleek all-in-one fold-open design that more closely resembled a notebook than a traditional multi-component desktop, the W series represented a bright new look for stay-at-home computers. Unfortunately, the first W units weren't particularly powerful. Now, with the latest in the W series, the VAIO PCV-W500GN1, Sony's new-look desktop is as fast as it is fashionable and space efficient.

Driven by a 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2700 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 GB), the VAIO PCV-W500GN1 offers enough top-end power for most any standard home, home office or business task. However, as in all other models in the W series to date, 3-D performance remains the weak spot. The unit's graphics chipset, an SiS 651 with 32 MB or shared (not dedicated) memory, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics or dabbles in 3-D games.

Included inside the VAIO PCV-W500GN1 is a combination CD-RW/DVD-RW drive through which users can burn and play music compilations, enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and create custom DVDs. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the surprisingly spacious 17.5-inch LCD display, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store all their MP3s on the massive 120 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the VAIO PCV-W500GN1 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, four lightning quick USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an IEEE 1394 FireWire interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest, as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter.

The exclusive bundled software package includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Intuit Quicken 2003, Microsoft Age of Empire 2, and an impressive array of professional-quality music, video and image editing utilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Computer for the price!
Well I have had this computer for about 10 days and everyone in the house loves the speed we are enjoying here. It's a Pentium 4 with the 512MB of RAM which I thought was overkill but it certainly zips through webforms fast and performs MS Office like a dream.

Sony loads you up with some nice software like Wordperfect and stuff to help you get the best use out of the CD-RW and DVD drives they installed. The front access to USB and memory stick ports are very convienent too!

When I opened the box and put it on my desk I was really puzzled on how you oopen this computer up. So rather than be totally confused I went to Circuit City and the salesmen show me how the top pops off after you push 2 tabs and they the sides come off after you push another tab inside. Easy as pie! I haven't messed with that. My only problem was my top cover had to be replaced by Sony because of a sharp egde. But other than that it's a great choice for a family PC.

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect balance of features and value.
This is another excellent entry from Sony CE, again gaining high marks for its value. It features an my favorite processor, an Intel Pentium 4 running at 2.0 GHz and offers 512 megs of very fast DDRAM. It also has 4 2.0-ready USB ports, a large 80 gig hard drive and a very good CD-R/W + DVD player. My only complaint is the lack of a true game-ready, 64 megs (or higher!) of video RAM. The included 32 meg Sony in-house, on-chip setup here just won't cut the mustard. There is, however, an open 4x AGP slot, so an upgrade can be bought and slid into place in 10 minutes without any fuss. In addition, there is no monitor included here, so that's another important expense to add. Nonetheless, it's a quality machine with lots of great features and it's one you'll probably be happy with for years to come. ... Read more

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Well Designed Machine
I have had three Sony Vaio computers over the last couple of years, and none has let me down. This latest Vaio is no different, with sleek styling and great performance. The machine is quiet, fast, and didn't cost me an arm and a leg even with the 19" FD Trinitron monitor that I also bought along with the system unit. Highly recommended - do yourself a favor and buy a Sony!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Sony VAIO RX 560 Turned Me into a Computer Addict
I had three nightmare HP Pavilion 7940s, in only three months. They literally took a summer and a fall out of my life. Then, I bought this Sony. Quite literally, it has turned me into a com-
puter freak. It has me roaming the Internet, downloading, uploading, reloading, uninstalling, and then reinstalling, just to play with it! I even subscribed to about ninety tech emags and regular magazines because it has opened up my interest that much in the new technology! It is fast, efficient, and ridiculously stable. It is not normal not to crash like this one never does. Also, it came with XP, which is the best thing Bill has done since '95. The HPs had ME, which is proof that terrorists have siezed contol of our nation's computer systems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet Computer for a Great Price
As you can see by just looking at the picture, the Vaio looks great, Sony is about the only computer company other than Apple that cares about its looks. The computer it self is great, it comes with everything you need. The processor is more than enough for any type of user, the ram is decent, for regular user that should be enough, but others might want to upgrade to 512mb, that only cost [price] so that isn't a big deal. The hard drive space is awesome; you can never run out, 80 GB, that's the second largest hard drive out there. The CD-RW is blazing fast; you can burn a full CD in about 4-6 minutes. And for those of you that own any Sony Digital Imaging or Video products, it gets even better, there is a I-Link port in the front of your computer, for easy access, and the Vaio comes pre-loaded for all the software you need. This computer is nearly perfect, the only extra that it's missing is the DVD-RW, but you wouldn't expect that in a computer selling for [price] (...). The Sony reliability factor is also an added reason for buying this computer, it never breaks down, it is flawless. For [price], this is the best computer on the market. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony desktops are good too!
I've had my Sony PCV-RX540 for over three years now, which is about 75 years old when translated into human years! I paid $750 for it brand new and it has proved itself to be the best investment I have made thus far in my life. With most PC's at least one component of the hardware would have failed within that period of time, but (knock on wood) she still runs almost like I just bought her yesterday. The only modifications I have made were the addition of 256 more MB of ram, bringing it to 512, which is sufficient to run AutoCAD, Photoshop, several browser windows, and a few other applications with ease, even with the 1.2GHz processor. I somehow managed to almost fill up the 60 GB hard drive, but it's only because I've backed up my entire CD collection at very high quality bit rates (196 Kbps!). In the 3 years I have owned it, I have never seen the "blue screen of death," and the only reason it froze on me at times were due to software issues, specifically with how PC-Cillin (anti-virus software) interacts with Windows XP's "built-in" file zipping service, which was easiliy remedied by disabling it. I have dealt with a lot of PC hardware, and usually build my own PC's but decided to be lazy this time around. Sony has designed an amazing case which is *very* sturdy and opens up easily, with frequently upgraded/replaced components such as the hard drive and memory in easily-accessible areas. Beware of reviews of computers that complain about compatibility issues, etc. - those reviews are off-topic since we are reviewing the computer itself, not Windows! If you are thinking of buying this PC used, GO FOR IT, unless it looks like it was kicked around or smashed with a hammer!

5-0 out of 5 stars The best computer I have ever had
I am a PC fanatic and I love to build them and I must admit that this Sony computer is the best for the buck. I purchased my computer in November 2001 and I have no problems what so ever. I have already installed a second 40 GB hard drive, a 32MB AGP video card with TV out ( the onboard video card only has 4MB ), an optical intellimouse, additional 256MB memory to max out at 512MB, Sound Blaster Live sound card, and I still stayed under my...budget limit for a new computer. Needless to say I have a very impressive unit and it hums right along. The included software is pretty much useless, so I installed AOL 7.0, Microsft Works 2002, Easy CD Creator 5.1, and a host of games which placed my total cost for everything at 1,200. I must say, for all that I placed into this computer, if I purchased the same thing anywhere else, with everything included, I would have spent at least 3,000. I am very impressed with Sony and very pleased with my PCV-RX540. Software loads easily, drivers for anything are a breeze (ensure you have Windows XP compatible drivers), and CD burning and watching DVD's is simply amazing. I have made two home videos with the VCD software included with Easy CD Creator 5.1 which I have veiwed on my DVD player. A simply great computer! Get it while it is hot. Very easy to upgrade! I know my money was well spent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great machine for the money
I really like my Sony Vaio. It is very quiet and extremely fast. My only problem with is is the pittiful software that came with the computer. This machine is in the digital series but I did expect a little more productivity software. I would have given it a 5 if it came with better software. I compared Dell, Gateway and HP and couldn't find a computer comparable. Sony offers a lot for the money with this computer (...).

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm impressed...so far so good...
I've had the RX540 Vaio for a couple days now. I bought it on a whim, after spending a few days looking for a new computer. My problem with computers is that I dont buy them often (every 3 years or so) and when it comes to buy, I dont know what I want since for every component there is at least a dozen options...i.e. which processor, how much memory, which hard drive, how fast of a CDRW, etc etc.
I also dont like to spend more than [dollar amount] since the fast pace of computer technology makes it "yesterdays model" an hour after you buy it!

Well Sony made the decision extremenly easy with the 540 Vaio. I could not believe that it had everything I wanted...a huge 60gb HD. Lots of memory (256) out of the box. A CD writer and DVD-rom... and all for [dollar amount]?! I looked at emachines, compaq, dell and none of them offered all this for that price... let alone the little things that sony does, like four USB portS (2 front and 2 back), built in ethernet, extra HD bay ,etc.. very nice.

I got home, disconneted my old PC and plugged this one in. Fired right up, and the XP immediatley detected and configured my monitor, printer, scanner. I was shocked that I didnt have to even load the software for my Kodak digital camera... I just plugged the USB wire in, and boom, XP showed all the photos and made them available for transfer... My HP840C printer used to always have fits with my old machine with WIndows 98. It would spit out extra pages, never print correctly, etc. The new Vaio and XP combo fixed all that.

THe only negatives I had was with the network connection detection. I have a broadband cable modem ISP. With my work laptop (Win 2K) all I did was plug the modem to the ethernet card, and bam, it was done the machine detected and configured the TCP/IP and I was surfing. Well with XP it put me through this stupid utility where I checked "broadband" (rather than dialup or LAN) then it supposedly auto-configured my connection... wrong. So for an hour I had to get rid of all the dial-up connections it had tried to put into place. Then I had to manually config the LAN settings... anyway it seems okay now, but I am still not sure why XP made that so confusing when the win2K and even win98 had it simplified.

To transfer my files and stuff from my old machine, I took the hard drive from my old machine and plugged it into the Vaio (real easy to open the vaio case, no tools needed) and bingo, without a hitch the Sony picked up the drive.

anyway, I agree with the previous post that sony bundles too m
