Amazon.com Product Description If speed is what you crave, the Vaio PCV-RZ26G delivers. Outfitted with a lightning-fast 3.06 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, a stunning 1 GB of premium PC-2700 333 MHz DDR memory, and a 533 MHz bus, the system is perfect for those who drive their computers beyond reasonable expectations. The only potentially suspect component is the graphics card, a 64 MB nVidia GeForce4 MX440. Although fully capable of handling the vast majority of applications, and equipped with a convenient TV tuner, it may have some problems smoothly rendering ultrahigh-end 3-D games and drawing or animation packages. When it comes to the storage and movement of data, Sony has left nothing to chance. The Vaio PCV-RZ26G is fitted with an enormous 160 GB 7,200 rpm Ultra ATA/100 hard disk for your frequently accessed programs and files, a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for older or smaller applications, and a combination DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest cinematic releases, and create your own DVDs. For fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners, and external drives, the system also features a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two IEEE 1394 FireWire connectors (mounted front and back). The Vaio PCV-RZ26G is packed with numerous other desirable amenities, including a VGA/DVI port for flat-panel displays, an S/PDIF out, two PS/2 ports, a pair of freestanding stereo speakers, and a handy Vaio Smart keyboard. Sony has not included a monitor, allowing you to use your current display or select from the many available choices.

How wrong those reviews are. This machine is VERY fast, and can handle very graphic intensive games. Examples: I tried Return to Castle Wolfenstein on this while running a file sharing program. No problem. I ran some mathematical simulation on it for about 12 hours (think 100% CPU utilization). No problem. Video playback flawless. My previous machine was a workstation with a 7200 RPM scsi drive on it and the only thing I notice different on this machine is that it is MUCH quieter than my previous. I've owned several sony computers over the last 5 years. I can vouch for their quality after drops, dozens of trips with them, and hours of very intensive use. THis machine, after 2 months 'hammering' it, is holding up great. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description If speed is what you crave, the VAIO PCV-RZ36G delivers. Outfitted with a lightning fast 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 Processor with Hyper-Threading Technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), and a stunning 1 GB of premium PC-2700 333 MHz DDR memory, the system is perfect for those who drive their computers beyond reasonable expectations. Sony has even addressed the Achilles Heel of most out-of-the-box desktops by enclosing a 128 MB nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card with w/TV-Out to handle high-end 3-D games and applications. When it comes to the storage and movement of data, Sony has left nothing to chance. The VAIO PCV-RZ36G is fitted with an enormous 160 GB hard disk for your frequently accessed programs and files, a 3.5-inch diskette drive for older or smaller applications, and a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest cinematic releases and create your own DVDs. For fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, the system also features eight high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two IEEE 1394 FireWire connectors (mounted front and back). The VAIO PCV-RZ36G is packed with numerous other desirable perks, including a VGA/DVI port for flat-panel displays, an S/PDIF out, two PS/2 ports, a 2.1 speaker system with subwoofer, and a handy VAIO Smart keyboard. The incredible software package features a variety of business applications such as Microsoft Money 2003 and Intuit Quicken 2002, as well as an impressive array of multimedia titles not available with any other desktop, including several high-end music, video and image editing utilities. A monitor is not included with this computer. Reviews (4)
For those of use who HATE XP Home, the upgrade process to XP Professional is a little painful. I made the recovery media and than wiped out the system to load a clean version of XP Professional. Because of the way the recovery media is designed I could not install any of the Sony provided applications onto the newly loaded system. Sony recommended reloading the recovery media onto the system and then upgrading to XP Pro. This resulted in a very messy system full of lots of items I don't use and don't want. There is also a problem reloading Gigapocket, but if you fool with the system you can get it reloaded. If I had to do it all over again I would consider other vendors or buy a custom configured system from Sony's website. I had originally tried to build my own system on Sony Style, but they were delayed several weeks due to a lack of parts. I canceled the Sony Style order and purchased this system from another retailer. I have purchased this system and a Dell in the last three years. I was much happier with my Dell buying experience though I did not find a Dell that had the editing features that came with this system. Sony seems unfriendly to more advanced users and they spend a lot of time trying to figure out how to avoid helping you. I would love to upgrade some parts of my system (specifically the sound), but so far I have found Sony less than helpful in this regard as well. I originally purchased this system for transferring my home videos to DVD. The video quality from my analog DVD player was pretty bad, but I am not sure if this is because of Gigapocket or because of the Sharp video recorder I own. Either way, this did not workout as I had hoped. The Adobe tools for this system are not the full version though you can upgrade for several hundred dollars more. I found Adobe Premier 6 LE to be very useful once I learned how to use it. For several hundred dollars more you can get the full version, but I am not sure that most home users will find that expense worth the effort. For most people the Microsoft Works that comes with this system is inadequate. For those who have school age kids, power point and Excel are excellent additions to the system. Because this system comes with Microsoft Works you may have issues (as I did) configuring other Office Products on this system. You should make sure that Sony will support your system if you upgrade to another version of Office. Expect very little paper documentation to come with your system. The help file that Sony loads on the system and the help files from the vendor are all you have to go on. This can make learning the system a little difficult. I still don't know what the fiber optic port is for and I have no idea what the Gigapocket specifications are. The system gets high marks for performance but gets low marks for documentation and cost. I would only buy this system if it is exactly what you want. Any changes will be difficult and may result in support issues when dealing with Sony support. I believe a little searching would give you more features for less money. If I had it to do over again I would not buy this specific system put would probably still consider a custom configured Sony or maybe an HP which also has some nice multimedia systems.

Sony has added 512 MB of fast PC2700 333 MHz DDR RAM and an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card with 64 MB dedicated video memory and a DVI output for optimum connection with flat-panel LCD displays. I usually start out with the pro's, but given the seriousness (or even worse, silliness) of the cons, I am going to start with those... Cons... Pros... Net/net: questionable cost savings decisions by Sony turned what could have been an awesome PC-for-the-home product into a sometimes silly, sometimes smoking solution for all but gamers.

Dimensions and Weight What's in the Box Tech Talk More About Microsoft Windows XP Media Center What sets this PC apart is that it is powered by Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004, which offers the features, reliability, and power of Windows XP Professional, plus advanced digital entertainment capabilities. The Media Center interface offers you more types of entertainment to enjoy: TV, Personal Video Recording (PVR), Movies, Music, Photos, Videos, Radio, and DVD. Use the remote control to enjoy from anywhere in your room. Reviews (5)
Gigapocket is exactly like having a TV, where you can adjust color by right clicking on the screen, input your video device via the composite or S-video cable and have Gigapocket detect it the same way it would if you plugged it into your TV and used the TV/Video select button to view your recordings. XP Media Center doesn't allow you to do that. You have to go through and reconfigure your settings each time, and then reconfigure it back to be able to play your TV channels (cable). The benefit with the RZ is that you get the 9600 ATI Radeo video card vs. the 9200 in the RS model. The other benefit of the RZ model is the 5.1 capable Soundblaster Audigy card. You can't get that in the RS, but you can always add it if you want to. The RS is the way to go if you're looking for seamless video to DVD recording or playback. If you're going to spend the money, make the investment to get 1gb of RAM.

Amazon.com Product Description The PCV-W10 is not built to satisfy the true power user. Although it does feature an impressive 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB) and a large 60 GB hard drive, the unit is constrained somewhat by a serviceable but far from state-of-the-art 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor and a 32 MB SiS 650 integrated graphics chip. Well suited to most home and home office use, Internet surfing, light gaming, and many basic business-related tasks, the PCV-W10 is nevertheless not ideal for high-end, graphics-based rendering applications or the latest crop of 3-D games. It is, however, ready to satisfy fans of multimedia entertainment. Included inside the PCV-W10 is a combination CD-R/CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the systems 15.3-inch LCD viewing screen for its DVD-friendly 16:9 wide aspect ratio. Music aficionados can play their CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed. Sony has enhanced the PCV-W10 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface, a Sony Vaio keyboard and hassle-free optical mouse, three lightning-quick USB 2.0 ports for the new breed of plug-and-play peripherals, and a high-speed IEEE 1394 interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders. Amazon.com Product Description The unit offers a pleasant tradeoff between power and affordability. Rather than fitting the Vaio PCV-RX741 with a state-of-the-art processor that, in reality, may deliver more power than most users require, Sony has installed acost-effective yet powerful 1.53 GHz AMD Athlon XP 1800+ with 128 KB of Level 1 cache and 256 KB of Level 2 cache. This capable chip is paired with a generous 512 MB of RAM and an integrated 32 MB SiS740 graphics processor. Although it won't set new speed benchmarks or efficiently handle the most demanding 3-D games, the Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop will easily carve its way through most of today's popular entertainment and professional programs. More than just an affordable workhorse, the unit is also exceedingly flexible. You'll find plenty of room to store your programs and files on its spacious 60 GB hard disk. You'll record and play audio CDs and back up your data on its integrated 40x/24x/10x CD-RW drive, load and move smaller files on its 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, and play DVD movies on its 16x DVD-ROM drive. And if you're looking for fast video data transfer solutions, the Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop is ready to oblige with two IEEE 1395 ports: one on the rear and another placed conveniently on the front of the case. The unit features a variety of additional connections, including four USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a parallel "printer" port and serial port, two PS/2 ports for keyboards and mice, and line-in and line-out audio jacks. An integrated V.90 data/fax modem delivers low-speed Internet connectivity, and a 10 Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet card affords high-speed e-mail access and surfing. A PS/2 wheel mouse, Vaio Smart keyboard, and a pair of full-range desktop speakers round out the system's hardware amenities. Sony has not included a monitor with the package, allowing you to select your favorite display from the many currently available or perhaps use one already on hand. The Vaio PCV-RX741 desktop is loaded with a variety of practical and entertainment software, including pre-installed copies of Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2002, and an assortment of Sony DVD, home movie, photo, and audio tools and utilities. And the graphics on this thing are even worse - ancient technology from a tiny chipset company. Did you know that the embeded graphics (not a card) doesn't even have it's own memory? It steals it from your main memory. Stay away from this thing - it's too little for too much.
Okay, if you are still interested in a Sony then this isn't a bad choice. However as a "budget" oriented computer the pricing is on this system out of line with the rest of their lower end value line (RV74* series). I suggested instead: For ... less you can get the RX740 with the same basic features (same CPU, graphics sub-system, software, etc) just half the memory (256M). Since you can by 256M of PC-2100 DDR for ... and stick it in two minutes, this makes more sense to me. If you want a fairly powerful desktop for home video, music, and moderate gaming, then spend ... more and get one of the 750 series like this: RX755 - 2 GHZ P4, 512M DDR-Ram, all the features of the above system and a few more. Frankly I think that right now the P4 is a better investment in the long term. The Athlon CPU line doesn't support SSE2 (special instructions that speed up software), has a much slower memory sub-system (about 1/2 the bandwidth), and less on-die cache than a P4 (again about 1/2). The Athlon used to be a better value for your money, but with 1.5GHz Athlons (aka "Model 1800") selling for just ...less than a 2.0 GHz P4 it seems crazy not to spend the few extra bucks and get an extra year of life out of your computer. Plus whereas Athlons are designed to last for about 5 years, P4s are designed to last over 10, something to think about if you want to pass this system on to a relative or kid in a few years.

Amazon.com Product Description Anchoring the VAIO PCV-RS210 is a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU. This is a relatively fast desktop processor, especially when running in conjunction with the system's generous allotment of 512 MB of memory (upgradeable to 1 GB). Sony has skimped just a bit on the 3-D capabilities by installing an Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared memory. Though the unit will handle all 2-D and some 3-D tasks, it will require a graphics card upgrade to plow through the latest high-end 3-D apps. Sony has equipped the VAIO PCV-RS210 with an adequate 80 GB 7200 hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a convenient DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders and cameras, scanners, and external drives, the system also features four high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two i.Link (FireWire) ports, one on the rear and another at the front. Amazon.com Product Description Driven by a 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2700 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 GB), the VAIO PCV-W500GN1 offers enough top-end power for most any standard home, home office or business task. However, as in all other models in the W series to date, 3-D performance remains the weak spot. The unit's graphics chipset, an SiS 651 with 32 MB or shared (not dedicated) memory, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics or dabbles in 3-D games. Included inside the VAIO PCV-W500GN1 is a combination CD-RW/DVD-RW drive through which users can burn and play music compilations, enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and create custom DVDs. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the surprisingly spacious 17.5-inch LCD display, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store all their MP3s on the massive 120 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed. Sony has enhanced the VAIO PCV-W500GN1 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, four lightning quick USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an IEEE 1394 FireWire interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest, as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter. The exclusive bundled software package includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Intuit Quicken 2003, Microsoft Age of Empire 2, and an impressive array of professional-quality music, video and image editing utilities. Sony loads you up with some nice software like Wordperfect and stuff to help you get the best use out of the CD-RW and DVD drives they installed. The front access to USB and memory stick ports are very convienent too! When I opened the box and put it on my desk I was really puzzled on how you oopen this computer up. So rather than be totally confused I went to Circuit City and the salesmen show me how the top pops off after you push 2 tabs and they the sides come off after you push another tab inside. Easy as pie! I haven't messed with that. My only problem was my top cover had to be replaced by Sony because of a sharp egde. But other than that it's a great choice for a family PC.

Amazon.com Product Description Reviews (7)
Well Sony made the decision extremenly easy with the 540 Vaio. I could not believe that it had everything I wanted...a huge 60gb HD. Lots of memory (256) out of the box. A CD writer and DVD-rom... and all for [dollar amount]?! I looked at emachines, compaq, dell and none of them offered all this for that price... let alone the little things that sony does, like four USB portS (2 front and 2 back), built in ethernet, extra HD bay ,etc.. very nice. I got home, disconneted my old PC and plugged this one in. Fired right up, and the XP immediatley detected and configured my monitor, printer, scanner. I was shocked that I didnt have to even load the software for my Kodak digital camera... I just plugged the USB wire in, and boom, XP showed all the photos and made them available for transfer... My HP840C printer used to always have fits with my old machine with WIndows 98. It would spit out extra pages, never print correctly, etc. The new Vaio and XP combo fixed all that. THe only negatives I had was with the network connection detection. I have a broadband cable modem ISP. With my work laptop (Win 2K) all I did was plug the modem to the ethernet card, and bam, it was done the machine detected and configured the TCP/IP and I was surfing. Well with XP it put me through this stupid utility where I checked "broadband" (rather than dialup or LAN) then it supposedly auto-configured my connection... wrong. So for an hour I had to get rid of all the dial-up connections it had tried to put into place. Then I had to manually config the LAN settings... anyway it seems okay now, but I am still not sure why XP made that so confusing when the win2K and even win98 had it simplified. To transfer my files and stuff from my old machine, I took the hard drive from my old machine and plugged it into the Vaio (real easy to open the vaio case, no tools needed) and bingo, without a hitch the Sony picked up the drive. anyway, I agree with the previous post that sony bundles too m
