Amazon.com Product Description

When Sony introduced its "W" series of VAIO desktop computers, it proved that PCs didn't necessarily have to be big and bulky. Sporting a sleek all-in-one fold-open design that more closely resembled a notebook than a traditional multi-component desktop, the W series represented a bright new look for stay-at-home computers. But while the first W units weren't particularly powerful, the latest are. Though not quite up to the standards of Sony's potent Media Center PCs, the VAIO PCV-W510G Desktop combines a fashionable, space efficient sensibility with a huge widescreen display and enough muscle for anyone but hardcore gamers and 3-D graphic designers.

Driven by a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2700 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 GB), the VAIO PCV-W510G offers adequate power for most any standard home, home office or business task. However, as in all other models in the W series to date, the unit's 3-D performance remains a weak spot. Its graphics chipset, an SiS 651 with 32 MB or shared (not dedicated) memory, will not efficiently run the latest 3-D games or 3-D animation packages.

Included inside the VAIO PCV-W510G is a combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which users can burn and play music compilations, archive data to long-lasting digital media, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters on the system's surprisingly spacious 17.5-inch widescreen (16.9 aspect ratio) LCD display. TV buffs will appreciate Sony's integrated Giga Pocket personal video recorder technology, which allows them to record their favorite television programs without using videotapes. Music aficionados can play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed, and store their MP3s on the large 80 GB hard drive.

Sony has enhanced the VAIO PCV-W510G with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, four lightning quick USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an IEEE 1394 FireWire interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest, as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk or table free of clutter.

The exclusive bundled software package includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Intuit Quicken 2004, Microsoft Age of Empires 2, and an impressive array of professional-quality music, video and image editing utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Computer Ever
This is such a wicked computer, I own one of these. It is so fast, and that CD-RW is just great!! I owuld definelty reccomend this computer to anyone. The ONLY bad part is the quiet speakers. Whenever I want to listen to music, I have to sit right in front of the PC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Turn up the volume
Sony's newest style is visually stunning with lots of cool features, but..... the speakers suck. They are way too quiet and they don't have any bass or treble control. Since they market it as a computer/tv, you would think that they would put a decent sound system in it. Luckily, I have been able to hook up an external set of speakers to it, but it takes away from the sleekness and versatility of the computer. It also comes preinstalled with way to much junk software, and no operating system cd's for reformatting.

Given that, I would still buy it because it's fresh new style. The computer itself is really thin and the screen is really nice. It is cool to look at web pages in widescreen format. I would suggest to buy it, but only if you are ok with adding external speakers. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

As the entry-level model in Sony's "RS" series of Digital Studio Desktops, the Sony VAIO PCV-RS120 Desktop delivers everything a multimedia fan could want, including CD and DVD burning capabilities and adequate speed for most tasks.

Anchoring the unit is a potent 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading is a new Intel-developed process that allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system –- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking). Sony has taken a cost-conscious approach with the rest of the powerplant, adding just 256 MB of moderately fast PC-2100 266 MHz DDR RAM memory and an integrated Intel 845GV graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. This setup is fine for general personal and professional activities, though gamers playing the most recent and demanding 3-D titles should upgrade the graphics chipset. Likewise, power multitaskers and businesspeople may need to upgrade the RAM memory, though the unit's sophisticated Hyper-Threading CPU should at least somewhat offset any insufficiencies.

The VAIO PCV-RS410 Desktop features several data storage options, including a massive 120 GB 7200 RPM hard disk, a handy 3.5-inch diskette drive for smaller backups and older programs, and an extremely versatile DVD-RW/-R/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters and turn your home movies into DVDs. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders and cameras, scanners and external drives, Sony has added four high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two FireWire ports, one on the rear and another at the front.

Other desirable amenities include a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet connection, a low-speed dial-up v.90 modem, a pair of small desktop speakers, a user-friendly VAIO keyboard, and a PS/2 wheel mouse. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to utilize your current monitor or select from the many alternatives currently available. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Intuit Quicken 2003, and oodles of Sony's own multimedia utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great mid-range computer
A very good mid-range computer. Sony puts a lot into quality and stability. It's a great entertainment computer, with a nice big HDD and a fast CPU. If you want to play 3D games you might want something with more graphics memory (or throw in a new graphics card for fifty bucks and you are set).

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice equiped machine for the price
Reasonable priced machine for DVD writer, 120 GB hard disk, fireware ports and USB 2.0 ports which are all very useful to use a digital camcorder with.

Small things I wish could change about the machine:
1) The C drive is partitioned to be 14 Gb only, too small if you want to install lots of software or having lots of stuff under My Document folder.
2) 256 MB is not enough for Movie Maker, lots of page faults.
3) No system CDs, you have to make your own from hard disk image. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Vaio PCV-RS510 offers everything you need to wrangle your multimedia collection and good power for multimedia software and PC games. Featuring a fast Hyper-Threaded 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor, the PCV-RS510 also offers a built-in DVD+/-RW writer, 512 MB installed RAM, a large 120 GB hard drive, and a wealth of digital audio, photo, and video software. With Click to DVD, you can import your camcorder's digital video and burn directly to DVD. For a step up in price, the Sony Vaio PCV-RS520 offers a stronger video card, a 160 GB hard drive, 3 GHz processor, and CD-RW drive (instead of CD-ROM) in addition to the DVD+/-RW writer.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The large 120 GB ATA-100 (7200 RPM) hard drive offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos, and MP3 collection as well as enough space for editing digital video files.
  • Processor: The 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) will be fast enough to handle editing of home and amateur digital video. It also has a 1 MB L2 cache and an FSB (front-side bus) speed of 800 MHz.
  • Memory: The installed 512 MB of RAM (PC-2700 DDR, 333 MHz) is sufficient for starting out, but you'll want to add more memory power to take full advantage of the PCV-RS510's multimedia capabilities (it's expandable to 2.0 GB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with two optical drives: a DVD+/-RW and CD-ROM drive. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 4x write/2x rewrite/2x read speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 4x write/2.4x rewrite/2.4x read speed. For CDs, it has a 16x write/10x rewrite/32x read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with a Sony Vaio keyboard and mouse (with PS/2 connector).
Sound and Graphics
The PCV-RS510 offers an Intel 865GV integrated video/graphics card built into the motherboard and 64 MB of dynamically shared VRAM. The PCV-RS510 features an integrated AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) that is also built into the computer's main board.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a wide range of connectivity options with the PCV-RS510 (including a floppy disk drive), such as three PCI expansion slots (one available), one 8x AGP (accelerated graphics port, occupied) slot and the following external ports:

  • 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 4-pin in front and 1 6-pin in back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 RGB monitor port
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92), and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The PCV-RS510 comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents) as well as a 60-day trial for Microsoft Office 2003. Preloaded Sony software includes Click to DVD (DVD creation), PictureGear Studio (digital photo), DVgate Plus (digital video), SonicStage (digital music), and Vaio Media (Network file sharing). Other preloaded software includes InterVideo WinDVD, MoodLogic 2.5 Trial, Intuit Quicken 2004 New User Edition, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Apple QuickTime, RealNetworks RealOne Player, Norton Internet Security (90-day trial).

What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony Vaio PCV-RS510 Digital Studio PC, keyboard, mouse, and set of two speakers.

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. ... Read more

84. Sony VAIO PCV-RX790G Desktop (2.4 GHz Pentium 4, 512 MB RDRAM, 120 GB hard drive)
by Sony

Catlog: Personal Computer
Manufacturer: Sony

Amazon.com Product Description

For those who require the ultimate in power and speed or anyone who simply enjoys being on the cutting edge of computer technology, the Sony Vaio PCV-RX790G desktop computer is built to please. With a furiously fast processor, massive hard drive, and support for both CD and DVD playback and recording, the Vaio PCV-RX790G will handle practically any business, multimedia, or entertainment application with plenty of room to spare. You'll pay a little more for this level of performance, and even then you'll have to furnish your own monitor, but very few pre-assembled computers on the market today are this well endowed.

At the heart of the system lies an Intel Pentium 4 processor. But not just any Pentium 4--this is a high-flying 2.4 GHz P4 chip with 512 KB of Level 2 cache. Sony has matched this extremely potent CPU with 512 MB of fast PC800-40 RDRAM (upgradable to 1 full GB) and plopped the whole works on a new 533 MHz bus motherboard. A 64 MB nVidia GeForce4 MX 440 video card handles the graphics processing. Suffice to say that Sony's top-of-the-line desktop will efficiently run any program currently in release and quite probably any appearing in the near future.

But the Vaio PCV-RX790G offers far more than raw power. The system features an exceptional variety of data storage and media options, including a monstrous 120 GB hard disk. Users can burn DVDs, record and play audio CDs, and archive massive quantities of data on the unit's combination DVD-RW/CD-RW drive, and view the latest Hollywood releases on the 16x DVD-ROM/CD-ROM drive. They can create home movie DVDs, send information from one removable disc to another, or use the system's 3.5-inch floppy disk drive to back up or transfer smaller amounts of data. They can even use the integrated TV tuner and MPEG2 real-time encoder/decoder to watch and record television broadcasts.

Fittingly, the Vaio PCV-RX790G is packed with advanced connectivity options, including an optical-out for Dolby Digital audio, two IEEE 1394 ports (one on the rear and one placed conveniently on the front of the system case) for high-speed uploads and downloads from DV- and disc-based camcorders and other video devices, and a Memory Stick media slot for fast transfers of digital photographs and large files. Other connections include four USB ports (two front, two rear), a serial printer port, parallel port, headphone and microphone jacks, oodles of standard audio ins and outs, and S-video support. A V.90 data/fax modem delivers low-speed Internet access and remote information movement, and a 10 Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet card affords high-speed e-mail and surfing. The system also features a handy PS/2 wheel mouse, a Vaio Smart keyboard, and a pair of speakers for accurate broadcast of stereo audio signals.

Sony has equipped this very proficient PC with a ton of pre-installed software, including Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2002, and nearly a dozen useful photo, video, and audio tools and utilities.

If top-level performance, masterful speed, and support for the latest multimedia devices are critical attributes in your next computer, the Sony Vaio PCV-RX790G desktop is a wise choice. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Especially well suited to multimedia mavens, the Sony Vaio PCV-RX742 desktop is a versatile system that's ready to handle virtually all the latest crop of internal and external PC applications and devices. Whether you're watching a Hollywood blockbuster, uploading and editing a home movie, recording a CD, or filling a spreadsheet, the Vaio PCV-RX742 will help keep things humming along smoothly.

The unit offers a pleasant tradeoff between power and affordability. Rather than fitting the Vaio PCV-RX742 with a state-of-the-art processor that, in reality, may deliver more power than most users require, Sony has installed acost-effective yet powerful 1.53 GHz AMD Athlon 1600+ with 128 KB of Level 1 cache and 256 KB of Level 2 cache. This capable chip is paired with a generous 256 MB of RAM and an integrated 32 MB SiS740 graphics processor. Although it won't set new speed benchmarks or efficiently handle the most demanding 3-D games, the Vaio PCV-RX742 desktop will easily carve its way through most of today's popular entertainment and professional programs.

More than just an affordable workhorse, the unit is also exceedingly flexible. You'll find plenty of room to store your programs and files on its spacious 60 GB hard disk. You'll record and play audio CDs and back up your data on its integrated 40x/24x/10x CD-RW drive, load and move smaller files on its 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, and play DVD movies on its 16x DVD-ROM drive. And if you're looking for fast video data transfer solutions, the Vaio PCV-RX742 desktop is ready to oblige with two IEEE 1395 ports: one on the rear and another placed conveniently on the front of the case.

The unit features a variety of additional connections, including four USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a parallel "printer" port and serial port, two PS/2 ports for keyboards and mice, and line-in and line-out audio jacks. An integrated V.90 data/fax modem delivers low-speed Internet connectivity, and a 10 Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet card affords high-speed e-mail access and surfing. A PS/2 wheel mouse, Vaio Smart keyboard, and a pair of full-range desktop speakers round out the system's hardware amenities. Sony has not included a monitor with the package, allowing you to select your favorite display from the many currently available or perhaps use one already on hand.

The Vaio PCV-RX742 desktop is loaded with a variety of practical and entertainment software, including pre-installed copies of Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2002, and an assortment of Sony DVD, home movie, photo, and audio tools and utilities. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars XP ROCKS!
Very happy with this PC, I am a student at College.
It is a great product for school and games too, Nivida chip biult in.
Made soem benchmarks looks like this cpu is even faster from Penium4 1.6Ghz.
If I had a choice I would buy this PC again!

5-0 out of 5 stars XP Rocks!
Some people still don't do the math!
Well for those of you that don't know the difference between Intel and XP,.
AMD XP makes more operation per second from P4, it works with QuantiSpeed™ Architecture. That's why XP 1600+ is faster from P4 (1.6 or 1.7Ghz)
They say P4 1.6Ghz but in reality runs @1.2 Ghz comparing to XP.
Another ex. Car1 (p4) with 8 cyl 400 HP with only 150 torque, Car 2 (XP) 400HP 6 cyl 350 torque.
I am not AMD fan but it is true, just what I said.
I really don't see the point to buy Intel. Unless you are Intel Freak. The reason why Intel cost more money couse not many people are still familiar with the new name Athlon CPU. Penium name exist from 1995 unlike Athlon came out in 1999.
Decision is very simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cool case!
This is my first PC from Sony and I am very happy.
Really good price, fast CPU come with DDR memory, good for games too.
this is mid range PC and I think it is worth every penny.
Sony makes really great product latly, I will never buy Pentium 4 anymore AMD is my new boddy much fatster from P4 1.8 Ghz.

Powerful enough for any business environment but perhaps better suited to an upscale home setting where its wealth of entertainment-related amenities may be fully exploited, Sony's top-of-the-line multimedia PC and most luxurious Digital Studio to date is ready for years of upgrade-free computing.

If speed is what you crave, the VAIO PCV-RZ46G delivers. Outfitted with one of the fastest processors currently on the planet, a stunning 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading Technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), and a whopping 1 GB of premium PC-2700 333 MHz DDR memory, the system is perfect for those who drive their computers beyond reasonable expectations. Sony has even addressed the Achilles Heel of most out-of-the-box desktops by enclosing a 128 MB nVidia GeForce FX5600 graphics card with w/TV-out and DVI-out to handle high-end 3-D games and applications and provide a purely digital link to the new breed of LCD flat-panel monitors.

3-0 out of 5 stars Down market speakers and noisy disk drive detract
I'm shocked no one seems to care that the 200GB hard drive that comes standard with this model whistles like a tea kettle. I called in the problem and the Sony authorized representative replaced the drive with another identical one. That one whistles, too. There simply isn't enough sound insulation. This is a problem when you are NOT watching loud DVDs obviously. I'm thinking of replacing the drive with something quieter--on my own nickel, of course.

The other joke is the cheap speakers that aren't as good as my 5 year old Monsoon speakers. Plus they are definitely unaesthetic looking. They really are a disappointment. Mine are available for anyone who wants them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you could want
Bought mine on a pre-order in November. It's very fast, multi-tasking is a non-issue; the built-in TIVO is a great toy. Once you read email and watch TV at the same time, you'll never go back. Click to DVD is very easy to use. Comes w/ a multitude of video, photo and jukebox software so you can pick your favorite.
Using a remote to control your music, view photos & video is WONDERFUL!
Sound quality is very good w/ supplied speakers - volume goes very high.

Cons:
Even tied to a great monitor, do not expect the TV picture to be as good as your set in the den.

My DirectTV receiver doesn't mesh perfectly w/ the TV tuner so that on some channels I have to hit a button on the Cable TV remote to remove the menu screen. More fiddling needed there.

The built-in mem stick port shows up as a CF port - strange.

Pluses greatly outweigh the minuses. A new version has the whole thing built into the monitor, so no box. Would be even better.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was skeptical, but Sony came through!
Initially, I was worried about going with Sony for a computer as they aren't one of the traditional brands that I have owned in the past (Dell, IBM, and Compaq). This computer is awesome! It rips through all of my design and multi-media work and I couldn't be happier. I kept my 21" CRT monitor though...was a tough choice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Click to DVD
Top of the line. Expensive, worth every penny. Sony made it easy to covert (VHS, VHS-C and 8mm) to DVD, a one step process.
Video ports are front and rear. I have a VCR connected to the computer and it will convert tapes to DVD with a very low learning curve. Use "Click to DVD" and the program does it.
Computer, $2200. Saving Grandma in 1988 to DVD - Priceless.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish it were mine
The family next door bought one of these and they were nice enough to let me have a go at it. Work-Of-Art. This machine rocks. We took every game they had, cranked up the settings as high as they would go (frame-rates that would kill my computer) and it didn't even blink.

They even showed me how well it does two things at once - like burn a cd and play a game on the side while they were waiting. When I burn a cd I have to go do something else because my computer slows to a crawl.

And it just looks awesome. It cost a lot, but I am giving it some serious thought. There is nothing else like it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Along with its slightly less powerful sibling, the Vaio PCV-W10, Sony's stylish and inventive Vaio PCV-W20 represents a bright new look for desktop PCs. In contrast to the bulky multicomponent setup of traditional PCs, the Vaio PCV-W20 sports a sleek all-in-one, fold-open design that more closely resembles a notebook. Fashionable and futuristic, Sony's latest PC will appeal to those with limited space or an eye for the distinctive.

Driven by a 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 GB), the Vaio PCV-W20 offers solid but unspectacular performance. The unit's graphics chipset, a 32 MB SiS650, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for die-hard gamers or anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics.

The system is, however, ready to satisfy fans of multimedia entertainment. Included inside the Vaio PCV-W20 is a combination CD-R/CD-RW/DVD drive through which users can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the integrated 15.3-inch LCD viewing screen, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 wide aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store their MP3s on the large 60 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the Vaio PCV-W20 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, three lightning-quick USB 2.0 ports for the new breed of plug-and-play peripherals, a fast IEEE 1394 interface for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Works 7.0, and Age of Empires II. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars ITS AWSOME
AWESOME GREAT COMPUTER. I'M ALMOST 9 BUT THIS IS MY SECOND COMPUTER AND IT WORKS WELL. AND LOOKS GREAT!

THE ONLY SMALL BAD THING IS THAT WHEN YOU PLAY COMPUTER GAMES IT DOES NOT HAVE A FULL SCREEN.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well equipped, but lacking expandability for the super-geek
The PCV-W20 is one awesome integrated desktop. Sure it's pricey, but you get a lot of features plus Sony's award-winning styling. The widescreen 15.3" (measured diagonally) LCD is beautiful and has excellent contrast ratio. The CPU is actually 1.8Ghz, not 1.9 (which doesn't exist), but it's still fast. Sony apparently optimizes the system so it feels as speedy as a 2.4Ghz Dell Dimension 2350 or 4500.

Unlike most other one-piece PCs, this one has all the ports loaded: three USB 2.0 ports (but one already taken by the optical mouse), two 4-pin i.Link/IEEE 1394 ports, one line-in port for hooking up an audio input source (e.g., a portable CD player or MP3 player), two PC Card slots, and one Memory Stick slot. Modem and ethernet are built-in, so you can surf web either way you want. You also get a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, but no DVD burner.

The W-series is really designed for family users who don't need to tinker with the system, so the biggest downside for us geeks is that you can't expand the system easily. For example, you can't put in a bigger hard disk, although you can get an external USB 2 or IEEE 1394 hard disk, or use an IDE hard disk with an external enclosure kit (e.g., ADS Pyro). You also can't upgrade the graphics card, which means if you are into the latest 3D games, you are out of luck. And you can't put in an internal DVD burner; instead you'll need to get an expensive external one (usually at a one-hundrd dolr premium).

Specs aside, the W20 is a pleasure to use. The keyboard does suffer from Sony's annoying policy of doing away with the insert/home/delete/... keys, and the arrow keys are cramped with the main keyboard which makes them hard to use. But that's about the only gripe. As mentioned before the system is speedy, and Sony bundles the system with a generous offering of software titles. The user experience is very positive, so if you can afford it, this is a highly recommend system for your home.

5-0 out of 5 stars My Family Loves It!
My wife and I were seeking a LCD-screen computer for my son's room. I introduced her to the Sony W-Series desktop - which is a big hit in Japan - and she was immediately impressed. She liked the clean lines and the keyboard which folded up to be even less obtrusive. The clincher for her, though, was the PC which was built into the back of the screen - which eliminated both the bulky tower on the floor -- and the messy cable cables streaming out of it.

The Sony W-series looks great. It doesn't clutter up my son's room which, heaven knows, is already cluttered enough as it is. He enjoys doing his homework - and playing computer games - on it. The sound from the built in speakers is excellent. And the wide-screen display is wonderful for watching DVD movies.

The computer comes with four USB and two FireWire connections. Since the mouse connects via USB, these ports fill up quickly. (I plan to use a compact Linksys USB hub when I run out.) The FireWire ports are also of the smaller four-pin variety. Since most of my FireWire devices use the six-pin plugs, I needed to purchase a six-to-four pin conversion cable from Belkin (who, like Amazon, has everything).

The W-Series also has a Memory Stick slot, which I use to transfer large files from my Sony Vaio desktop (which also has a reader), and amongst my home and office laptops, where I've installed Sony Memory Stick PCMCIA card adapters into all of them. The W-series also has a pair of LAN ports, which I don't use, and a PCMCIA card slot which I'll probably employ to add 802.11 b or Bluetooth capability later. For those of you (like me) who don't know how to open up the back of your desktop to add these features, being able to do so via a PC card slot is definitely a plus.

Since the keyboard is attached to the bottom of the screen, the LCD sits a little lower on the desk than a free-standing unit, which my son doesn't notice. It's much like using a laptop (which was our other alternative) - but with a desktop's easier-to-use keyboard and mouse! The mouse, incidentally, is of the optical variety, so tracking is extremely smooth and accurate. And the screen tilts down slightly, which is nice when I want to watch DVD movies - while sitting in an easy chair in front of it!

The Sony W-Series computer is a big hit. I can tell because my son enjoys using it; and my daughter (who is a few years younger) wants one too!

If space efficiency - and aesthetics - are important considerations for you (as they were for us), the Sony W-Series might be just the ticket. My family loves it! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Vaio PCV-RS610 proves that PCs aren't just for spreadsheets any more. A multimedia powerhouse, the RS610 comes complete with a DVD+/-RW drive and a variety of Sony digital media software that makes it easy to burn your home movies and digital audio collections to disc. It also offers a huge 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a hyper-threaded 2.8 GHz hyper-threaded Pentium 4 processor.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: Though it's not the largest on the market, the 160 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive (7200 RPM) is still quite huge, and it offers a wealth of storage for your media library as well as necessary space for editing digital video.
  • Processor: The 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system) is one of the fastest processors currently available on the market. It also has a 1 MB L2 cache and a fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed.

A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.

  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (PC-3200 400MHz DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 2 GB (2 x 1 GB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It comes with two optical drives: a DVD+/-RW and CD-RW combo drive and a 40x CD-ROM for playing music and gaming discs. The combo drive offers 8x write, 4x rewrite, and 8x read speeds for both +R/RW and -R/RW discs and a 40x write/read and 24x rewrite speed for CD-R/RW discs.

Sound and Graphics
The integrated Intel graphics/video card offers acceptable 3D and video rendering, and it has 64 MB of dynamically shared graphics memory (meaning that memory is taken from the PC's main RAM). It also has an AC'97 sound card that's integrated into the main board, and comes with two external stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a good range of connectivity options with the PCV-RS610, such as three PCI expansion slots (two available), one 8x AGP (accelerated graphics port, available) slot, two 5.25" half-height bays (both occupied), one external 3.5" bay (occupied), two internal 3.5" bays (one occupied), and the following external ports:

  • 8 USB 2.0 ports (4 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 4-pin in front and 1 6-pin in back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interface) digital optical connector
  • 1 line in
It also has a 3.5" 1.44 MB floppy disk drive, integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Amazon Product Description

The BasicsAs one of the most affordable members of Sony's distinctly upscale "R" series of desktop computers, the VAIO VGC-RA826G Digital Studio PC brandishes many of the same features Sony incorporates into its pricier R models but falls just short of state-of-the-art and does not include a viewing screen. Thusly, the unit is ideal for those who want high-end computing without paying top dollar. Designed to efficiently handle virtually anything you can throw at it, the VAIO VGC-RA826G is a great fit as the hub of a business, personal, home office, entertainment or gaming environment. It even features an innovative liquid heat pipe cooling system to squelch excess heat and minimize noise.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The VAIO VGC-RA826G incorporates one of the fastest CPUs currently in existence (at the time of this writing), an Intel Pentium 4 550. New for 2004, this is an upgraded version -- nicknamed "Prescott" -- of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at an astounding 3.4 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this CPU delivers more than enough power for any application or environment.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. For the VAIO VGC-RA826G, Sony has installed a whopping 1024 MB (1 GB) of fast PC3200 400 MHz DDR SDRAM memory. This is a ton of memory even for a high-end machine, and its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is easily sufficient for any multitasking situation or complex application. Moreover, the system's mainboard is constructed to support RAM upgrades to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that's integrated on the mainboard and "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures.

One of the problems with many high-end PCs is that they simply aren't equipped with a graphics card on par with the rest of the system. Not so with the VAIO VGC-RA826G, which features an ATI Radeon X600 XT with 256 MB of video memory. Not only will this card efficiently operate all your 2D and 3D apps (including the vast majority of demanding 3D games), but it also includes a television tuner and a 16x PCI Express Giga Pocket MPEG2 Realtime Encoder/Decoder to pause, rewind and replay live TV. Furthermore, Sony will package the system with a handy remote control to make TV and movie viewing even easier.

Display:
Sony has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The VAIO VGC-RA826G produces stereo and surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for six distinct audio channels. Sony will also enclose a 2.1 speaker system with two desktop satellites for clean middle and high frequencies and a subwoofer for added bass support.

Hard Drive
At 250 GB, the unit's internal hard drive is one of the largest on the market and thusly spacious enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Furthermore, this particular hard drive is exceptionally quick -- sporting a fast 7200-RPM speed, an 8 MB buffer, and a futuristic Serial ATA connection. These are all comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and performance of the system.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

This unit features two optical drives -- a DVD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs and DVD movies, and a DVD +/- RW Double Layer Multi-Format drive through which you can not only do everything above but also take advantage of new double layer DVDs (twice the capacity of traditional DVDs). Moreover, this two-drive setup allows you to make extremely fast CD or DVD copies.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports, you'll have lots of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Sony has also installed two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (often used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), an S/PDIF jack for crystal clear digital audio, two S-Video inputs for lossless digital video, a DVI monitor port for the highest quality flat-panel display images, and a memory card reader for reading today's most popular memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated Gigabit Ethernet LAN interface for substantially faster network and Internet access than traditional 100Mbps and 10Mbps Ethernet, and a 56K data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections

Operating System and Software
The VAIO VGC-RA826G features a software package that's clearly aimed at fans of multimedia. Headed by Microsoft's Windows Media Center Edition operating system and Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity pack, the bundle also features Adobe Premier LE video editing suite, Adobe Photoshop Elements digital imaging utility, and a half dozen of Sony's own top notch audio, video and photo tools.

Control
Apart from the aforementioned remote control, the system includes a convenient VAIO Keyboard and a no hassle PS/2 optical mouse. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great PC with a Future
I bought this PC for two reasons. After about 4 months it has not let me down.

It is close enough to the cutting edge (huge hd, fast processor, graphics, cdr) for me and all my foreseeable future demands. I like to edit photos and archive them, create web pages, and play music on my computer. You could by a cheaper machine with a celeron or other older chip and lower graphic capabilities, memory etc, but then where will you be in 2-5 years. This VAIO should have the horse power to be usefull well into the next decade.

The second reason is that this is a great value. You still can't get a laptop that has these features for less than twice this much. If you want to significantly upgrade to dvd-r and a top of the line processor and graphics, you have to go up at least a grand if not two. I still find many less equiped machines for the same price or more, and this is a Sony.

Sony wants to play in the PC hardware market and are offering some great deals to spark some interest. Take advantage.

5-0 out of 5 stars THE SONY VAIO DIGITAL STUDIO SERIES IS TOP NOTCH
I bought a Sony PCV-RX series computer 6 months ago and it has performed nicely. My systems is a RX 463 model, with a 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 Processor, 400 Mhz Front Side Bus, 128 MB RDRAM, 40 GB Hard Drive Storage, Dual CD-RW, DVD-ROM drives and Win ME stage. The computer is very stable: I have had ZERO system program since I purchased it. And for the price, I think it is very hard to beat it. Computers of comparable price, do not deliver the kind of performance, hardware, and software that this little VIAO machines deliver.

The computer is lightning fast... the machine can be loud at times, but do not let that deter you. Most computers have some level of noise. The Hard Drive is great: I beat the crap out of my Hard Drives, saving, deleting, moving, downloading, etc, etc, and NO problems! So it is the perfect computer for you if you want a digital video/audio editing workshop. My model is actually on the lower end of the series and is still better than most PCs in my experience. If you are a gamer, then this is an excellent choice as well. The GeForce 2 graphics card is powerful!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Superior.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sony .... Good for the warranty....
Well, it was a solid computer for the length of the warranty. Which is 1 year. A couple months after the warranty expired, BAM! The Hard Drive fried. Customer support is a drag when you run out of the warranty 3 hours waiting to hear that repairing it will cost 311$.... For that, I say spend your money else where, your better off without Sony.

1-0 out of 5 stars Non Support
Worked great out of the box...then the Sony updater and other features took over. No way to control system setup unless you are hip to scripts. No way to fix system setup (like in XP). I had to tell the tech that my setup disks could be bad, then I think they sent me a mixed set!!! It thinks it is XP Pro and Home. I'm going to buy real Windows disks and try to load the Sony software. Wish me luck.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Computer On The Market!
I have been searching for a computer with a DVD-Rom, CD Burner, Good Graphics, And Big And Fast Ram & HardDrive! I looked @ Dells, IBM, Gateways, & E-Machines, But This Was The Best! Everbody Said To Buy A ComPauq, but compauq's stink! I looked for over 4 months for onw with all the stuff i wanted and with the best price! I Would give this computer 5(*****) Stars! I would recommend this computer to anyone, whos out there looking for a new PC! This is the best computer out on the market. Good Luck! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

With the Vaio PCV-MXS20 desktop, Sony has earnestly begun to bridge the gap between computers and entertainment systems. Unlike many preconfigured models, the Vaio PCV-MXS20 emphasizes multimedia performance and, in particular, its sound and video delivery system. If you're looking for a single component that can go from business workhorse to playtime fun center at a moment's notice, you may have found your solution.

The most obvious difference between the Vaio PCV-MXS20 and other computers is readily apparent in the form of two large wood-enclosed, two-way loudspeakers. This is a refreshing break from the tiny and often ineffective speakers you'll find accompanying most systems. And to ensure you make good use of its audio output devices, Sony has incorporated a number of multimedia options inside the unit, including a combination DVD-RW/CD-RW drive for recording and playing music CDs, burning home movies onto digital media, or enjoying the latest cinematic releases. And don't forget data backup. With the massive 4.7 GB capacity of a DVD, you may be able to archive all your data on a single disc.

If minidiscs are more to your liking, the Vaio PCV-MXS20 is ready to accommodate. Sporting a fully functional minidisc recorder, the unit allows you to burn and play up to 320 minutes of digital audio on each convenient miniature disc. Furthermore, you can listen to FM radio with the system's innovative FM receiver, watch and capture television broadcasts with its MPEG2 real-time encoder/decoder board with TV tuner, and transfer music and images with its integrated MagicGate Memory Stick slot.

Fortunately, the Vaio PCV-MXS20 is powerful enough to handle just about anything you want to do. Driven by a 2 GHz Pentium 4 processor with 256 KB of Level 2 cache, 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 GB), and a 32 MB nVidia GeForce 2 MX graphics board, the system will efficiently run everything but the most video-intensive 3-D games. An accommodating 120 GB hard drive completes an impressive hardware roster.

With the Vaio PCV-MXS20, you'll always be connected. The unit features three USB ports (two front and one rear), an LCD monitor (DVI) port, 6-pin i.Link port, digital audio optical port, headphone-out, microphone-in, S-video in and out, and various analog audio jacks. The system's built-in FM antenna helps clear up distant FM signals, and its 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet supportshigh-speed LAN and Internet connections. Sony has not included a monitor, allowing you to select one separately.

To help get you started, Sony has installed Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Other pre-installed software includes Sony's own Giga Pocket personal video recorder, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Intuit Quicken 2002, and an assortment of music, video, and photo applications. ...
