Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring embedded wireless support, reduced power consumption and enough fast-access Level 2 cache to noticeably accelerate your day-to-day multitasking, Intel's innovative Centrino technology is the sophisticated centerpiece of Gateway's 200Xa Notebook PC. A fast and capable machine that houses an impressive number of upscale amenities in its miniscule 12.4 by 10.2 by .94-inch, 4.35 pounds frame, the Gateway 200Xa will appeal to anyone prioritizes portability yet needs a full-service notebook.

Driven by a 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor incorporating Centrino technology, a perfectly adequate 512 MB of main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 graphics chipset with shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Gateway 200Xa isn't ready for high-end 3-D animation or taxing 3-D games but will make quick work of most common desktop applications. Furthermore, Gateway hasn't allowed the system's subcompact frame to limit data handling options, equipping it with a midsize 40 GB hard disk and a convenient DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive data and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. In its stock configuration, DVD burning is not supported.

The unit features an impressively generous 14.1-inch XGA TFT active matrix display screen (1024 by 768 resolution) and stereo speakers. User controls include a full-size keyboard and EZ Pad pointing device. Other helpful amenities include two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for external devices such as scanners and optical drives, one IEEE 1394 "FireWire" port (commonly used for fast data transfer to and from digital camcorders), an S-Video port for feeding your display to a TV and an S/PDIF high-fidelity digital audio output. When you need to communicate, you can do so via high-speed LAN, low-speed modem or through the integrated 802.11b Wireless Networking card.

Your Gateway 200 Series will ship with pre-installed copies of Windows XP Home Edition and Microsoft Works 7.0.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine, particularly with a few upgrades
This computer is spectacular, it looks great and also runs well. It is very small, but the keyboard is of usable size and has a good feel to it (my old gateway notebook definitely had a bit of a flimsy feel to it).

A few things:
1) GET THE HIGH CAPACITY BATTERY. The stock battery is awful, but such is life. Don't order it from gateway though, check out other places, such as a particular online warehouse with a three letter name. I got mine for almost 1/2 the price Gateway was charging there, and the service was a lot better.
2) The speakers suck too. The computer is less than 1" think. What do you expect? They're finally beginning to come out with wi-fi products that will use your connection to stream music from your computer to your stereo. I can't wait to get my hands on one, until then, plug it into to your stereo or use headphones.
3) Adding more RAM is highly recommended. I added an additional 512MB that I got from a well-known auction site for $50. The difference is immediately noticable; XP devours RAM.
4) Download iTunes. Seriously, even if you don't want to download music from them, it has to be the most user-friendly (not to mention free and visually pleasing) music library managment software on the planet.
5) STAY UPDATED. Every time you read about an attack, its because people don't update their OS, antivirus, and firewall software/hardware. It takes a few seconds every few weeks, and any decent company will alert you to the updates automatically. This will also eliminate 99% of problems people may experience with their wi-fi connections; the software updates usually fix glitches that weren't anticipated when the product was manufactured (I use a D-Link DI-624 router, and it's been phenomenal).
6) You'll want to get a USB drive if you need to move files off-network regularly. They're compact, hold a lot, and have become really inexpensive. I ended up buying one and couldn't be happier. Or you can do as I used to: just email files to yourself and access them at your final destination (I had a habit of losing/leaving behind floppies when I was in college).

All that said, for the price, this system simply can't be beat. Even without all the extra BS I bought for mine, it's still a great notebook. It runs cool and fast and looks great. You won't find many other notebooks with these specs and functionality.

5-0 out of 5 stars slick, fantastic little machine!
I wanted a sleek looking little laptop with a decent size screen and 512mb of ram... and I got all that and more! It does everything I need, never hiccups, it's lightweight... I'm really glad I bought it. It's beauty is not only skin deep, have a look at the specs :) It's great. The only complaint... buy a backup battery... the standard one runs out so quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars In a word, Cool
I'm going to cover what hasn't already been written about. So, here are things that make this laptop stand-out or stink-up.

Pros:
- The Centrino Chip clocks at 1.5MHz; I have heard that this translates to a P4 2.5MHz processor. This part is confusing; just know that games and applications work fast.
- Screen checks in at 14.1" which is a good working size - slightly more to carry than those 12" screens, but much more useable and it leaves room in the chassis for a full-sized keyboard.

- Comes with internal DVD/CDRW which I find really cool (as opposed to external, which would be a pain to carry).
- AC adaptor is pretty cool. It's made so you can wrap the cord around it neatly when you're not using it, and then there is a little snap thing on the plug so the cord doesn't get unraveled.
- Lots of useful external ports (2 usb's, firewire, ethernet, modem, PCMCIA slot, video out, S-video out, etc). I especially like the optical out, which I don't use, but I still like it being there.
- Wireless works well. Go Centrino technology!
- Comes with many programs inside (Windows XP, MS Works, Picture It!, Jukebox, etc)
- The battery looks cool. If you take it out, there are some little led lights and a button you press that shows how much battery life is left.
- This is one of the sleekest designs and coolest looking notebooks around. If you want to stand out from all those other black books in the airport or commuter train, you won't go wrong with the 200.

- It comes with a comprehensive hard-copy user manual (yes, printed on real paper -- not a CD or web address).
- The battery is upgradeable.

Cons:
- Yes, battery life and speakers suck. Use the high-capacity battery and a pair of headphones.
- The mouse scroll, while it is useful, takes a long time if you use it to scroll down web pages because it moves the pages down slowly
- While the screen brightness key function works well, the audio volume adjustment is annoying to use. It doesn't respond to (function) (up) or (down) very well. hard to describe, but if you get a chance to actually play around with this laptop before you buy it, try the audio up down function and you will know what I'm talking about. What would have been better is a little manual scroll wheel on the side of the computer that would control the system volume.
-Maybe it's my computer, but the battery life status doesn't seem to be completely accurate. It goes up to 99% somewhat fast, and then stays there for another 10-15 minutes before it finally says 100% charged. It's the same with low battery status, where it doesn't fall below 9%. but it does give me a warning message. (But the LED light doesn't start blinking at low battery, like the manual said it would)
- No floppy drive. I guess buying a USB flash drive will do.
- Two usb ports. While it may be sufficient to some, I wish there were more. I guess buying a USB hub will do.
-Too bad there is only space for one pc card slot
-It would have been nicer if the ethernet port was in the back of the notebook so that the cord doesn't bother my left arm, but it's no big deal.
-I hate support programs. They take up space and I feel like I have a bunch of junk programs running every day. I say if you're confident of your computer skills and can take care of the little computer problems yourself, take them out.

Overall: Yes, battery life is bad. If you need more than 2 hours get a new 6-cell one for 100 bucks. Yes, speakers are bad, but what do you expect from a 4 pound laptop? This is cool looking, good performing system without the bulk. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet thin & light design
I've been happy with my old Gateway notebook's performance and stability, so I went to look for a sleeker, better-looking one. I found it in the 200 series. The 1.5GHz 200X looks nice inside and out and is amazingly thin and light. I can easily put it in my backpack (with a neoprene sleeve covering it) and it weighs less than a college textbook. This laptop is fast enough for everything I do on it (burning CDs, Adobe Photoshop, word processing, surfing the net, etc). Although it would've been nice if it was even faster with HT technology, but considering most centrino notebooks out there, 1.5GHz seems pretty fast already. The only comparable notebook in size and looks is the Sony Vaio PCG-Z1A, which costs over $200 more at only 1.3GHz.
Now that I've had it for a while, I've gone to the Gateway's support site to check on drivers. The site contains plenty of downloads for the 200 and decent FAQs. Better still, the site has a section where you can chat in real time with a tech-support rep and avoid telephone wait times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty & Brawn
The 200X has an ultramodern design -- sleek silver case, cool blue keyboard all in a slim lightweight package. Plus is has insides to back it up -- a quick 1.5Ghz Pentium M, DVD drive, 14.1-inch screen and built-in wireless. There are three buttons above the keyboard you can program to launch your favorite applications and a fourth button shines with a blue light when the integrated wireless is activated. Very nice. It also has an extremely comfortable keyboard.
The only bad news was the short battery life. Buy the optional, high-capacity battery. Armed with the new battery, the Gateway 200X lasted nearly 4 hours. With enough juice, this is a great notebook. Easily more for the money than any of the other systems I've looked at in this price range. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

No matter how you prefer to input your data, the Gateway M275X Tablet PC has you covered. If you favor traditional methods, the M275X is packaged with a flip-open full-size keyboard. If you'd rather work with a stylus, the unit's swiveling display allows you to write and store information, sketch pictures and annotate documents via your own handwriting. Versatile, adaptable, compact and substantially more powerful than the majority of competing tablet PCs, the Gateway M275X is ready to handle virtually any situation and user preference.

Certainly Gateway has designed the unit with portability in mind. Tipping the scales at just 5.7 pounds and measuring 12.6 by 10.8 by a mere 1.1 inches, the Gateway M275X is larger than many tablets but substantially slimmer and more lightweight than the notebook norm.

Gateway has turned to Intel's new Centrino platform to power the system. Centrino, a technology built upon a triad of three interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- allows portable computers to be smaller, more power efficient, and faster than their rated CPU speeds might indicate. The Gateway M275X features a snappy 1.4 GHz Pentium M processor and a smallish alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM as its power base, and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 3-D graphics chipset with 32 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory to drive its 3-D visuals. Consequently, the unit is ready for most standard mobile 2-D tasks but will have some troubles in intense multitasking situations and when trying to smoothly display midlevel and high-end 3-D apps and games.

The distinctive Gateway M275X sports several other desirable amenities, including a generous 14-inch XGA TFT Active Matrix display (large by tablet standards), a 56K modem, a 10/100 Ethernet connection, and an 802.11b wireless networking card for trouble-free LAN and Internet access in any environment. The enclosed 40 GB hard disk is of average size, and the system's optical drive handles CD playing and burning and DVD playing but doesn't support DVD writing. Connectivity options include two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire port (typically used for downloading from digital camcorders) and an integrated 4-in-1 card reader for linking with memory cards from PDAs, digital cameras, and the like.

The bundled software package features Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0 and a 90-day free trial with the respected Norton AntiVirus utility. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Repackaged Toshiba?
In nearly all respects, this is a lesser version of the Toshiba M205 . It uses a slower processor, ships with half the RAM, and has a smaller hard drive. Even the naming convention for the model seems inherited from Toshiba (Gateways' M275X opposed to Toshiba's M205). In this case, a bigger model number equals less tablet.

I'm trying to see the innovation here. Maybe it's the Firewire port. It's not the SD-card support, since the Toshiba has that. Maybe it's the larger screen, 14" opposed to the Toshiba's 12". Could prove useful, but compelling?

Weigh them each on their own merits, pick the best one for your needs, but keep in mind that if this in fact a re-branded Toshiba, you'll save yourself some technical headaches by going right to the source innovator. Better drivers, better access to advanced tech... maybe Gateway's technical support has gotten better over the years, but I doubt it.

For a tablet PC, you can do better.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Killer Computer
Are you looking for an awesome deal on a laptop? Need the best Tablet PC on the market? Are you a student that has difficulty with there typing skills? Are you an office worker that thinks they can be more productive if they didn't have to type everything? Do you need an excellent computer, but don't want to pay $2,000* + on a computer that's not as good as the M275? If you answered yes to any of these questions than the Gateway** M275 convertible tablet pc is the right choice for you. Now you're probably saying ok here's a laptop reasonably priced nothing special hmm... next! WRONG the M275 unlike most tablets that don't have built in keyboards and, unlike most laptops that don't offer handwriting recondition the M275 offers the best of both worlds, when you first open it up it's a normal laptop, then all you have to do is turn the screen, push a button and Boom... it instantly becomes a tablet. What is a tablet you ask, a tablet is a special type of computer with special software made by Microsoft*** that offers converted handwriting recondition, that means that with a special pen (Included) you can write on the screen press a button and BOOM!!! It converts your handwriting. As well as offering handwriting recondition it also offers a 14" screen, something only offered by two manufacturers of tablets (Gateway** and Acer**) in addition it also offers a memory card reader so if you are going on vacation and you're bringing along your digital camera you don't have to pack a cable for your digital camera (if it supports SD, Memory Stick**, or Smart Media) This is why I think the M275 is a excellent system!!!!

Amazon.com Product Description

Gateway's new Media Center desktop computers are as unique as they are convenient and functional. Equipped with a big, wide LCD screen just perfect for multimedia buffs, each Media Center PC also features such welcome amenities as Intel Hyper-Threading processing, numerous high-end audio/video/data connections, and a visually distinctive, fully portable all-in-one tower-less design. This model, the Gateway 610X, is the midlevel member of the Media Center series, and as such offers a good balance between cost and power and far superior 3-D graphics capability than the base model Gateway 610S.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610X features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has added a solid allotment of memory -- 512 MB DDR SDRAM -- and a top-level graphics card in the ATI Radeon 9200 AGP with 128 MB dedicated (not shared) video memory. Even serious gamers and 3-D artists should feel at home with this system.

To help you manage your data, the Gateway 610X features a potent 7200 RPM 120 GB hard disk, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and record audio CDs and play the latest Hollywood DVD blockbusters, and a handy 7-in-1 card media card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDAs and the like. In its stock form, the system does not support DVD burning.

To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, the system features a total of five high-speed USB 2.0 ports (including one mounted on the front) and an IEEE 1394 FireWire connector. Gateway has also enclosed a 5.1 line-out jack for five-speaker surround sound, a high-quality S/PDIF digital audio output, a composite A/V in, S-Video ins and outs, and an Intel 10/100 Ethernet adapter for fast network and Internet access.

The system's unique design offers several distinct advantages, not the least of which is a noticeable lack of external wiring. In fact, its large 17-inch widescreen display screen sports no wires at all, sitting instead atop a stylish integrated pedestal. Gateway has also included a wireless optical mouse, wireless keyboard, convenient wireless remote control, and built-in stereo speakers with subwoofer. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one-month free access to the Napster music download site.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of stuff in a compact system!
Great computer with additional features (TV tuner, PVR, etc.), and it takes up very little space.

Wireless keyboard is a pain, however - its reception to the system is poor and it eats batteries like crazy.

TV reception is snowy - don't buy it for the TV, buy it for the compact computer and the convenience of having the other things attached. You'll still want a regular TV.

This would also be GREAT for a college student in a dorm room. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sitting at the low end of the Gateway's mid-level M305 series, the Gateway M305S notebook offers a lot to like for budget-minded buyers--from students to home office workers on the move. Its highlights include a 30 GB hard drive, 256 MB built-in memory, 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor, and 14.1-inch display.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The M305S is outfitted with a 30 GB ATA hard drive, which is more than enough for storage of typical software applications, games, and documents, as well as a decent-sized collection of digital audio files.
  • Processor: The 2.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor is not a multimedia powerhouse, but it will perform well enough for graphics-rich tasks like PowerPoint presentations to QuickTime movies. It has a 256 KB L2 cache.
  • Memory: With the built-in 256 MB DDR SDRAM, you'll be able to perform your everyday computing needs. The M305S has two SO-DIMMs (Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Modules) for memory expansion up to 1 GB. It supports 200/266 MHz DDR SDRAM.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The CD-RW/DVD combo drive boasts a 24x/10x/24x CD-RW speed (perfect for quickly making mix CDs or copying important documents for colleagues) and 8x DVD playback speed (fast enough for watching rented movies while travelling; no DVD burning capability).
  • Keyboard & Mouse: It has a full-sized 85-key keyboard and 2-button touchpad.
Sound and Graphics
The included sound card is acceptable (though definitely not for audiophiles), and it is not replaceable as it it integrated into the computer's main board. It has built-in stereo speakers at the front of the unit near the base, as well as headphone/speaker and mic jacks. The audio volume (and muting) can be controlled from the keyboard.

The M305S has a 14.1-inch TFT Active Matrix flat panel display. It has a resolution of 1024 x 768 (also known as XGA) at 18-bit (262,000 colors). It features integrated Intel graphics with dynamic video memory technology, which helps make this package so affordable. If you're into 3-D gaming, you won't be able to upgrade the card as it's built into the computer's main board.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For a budget notebook, the M305S offers a good range of connectivity. It features two ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports (but no FireWire), a parallel port (for connecting to older printers and peripherals), and a VGA monitor port. It also has an integrated 56K modem and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection).

The M305S comes equipped with a built-in memory card reader (divided into two slots) that is compatible with CompactFlash, MicroDrive, Memory Stick, MultiMediaCard (MMC), Secure Digital (SD) and Smaredia cards. Additionally, this notebook has a PC Card slot (also known as a PCMCIA card slot) that accepts one Type II or Type III card.

This notebook is not enabled for wireless connectivity out of the box; you will need to purchase a wireless LAN PC card separately. Note, also, that the M305S does not come with a floppy drive.

Preloaded System and Software
The M305S comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents) and a 90-day trial with Norton Anti-Virus. During this trial period, you can automatically download scheduled virus protection updates; after the 90 days, you can renew the subscription for an annual fee paid directly to Symantec. It also comes with six months of AOL service.

Dimensions and Weight
Fairly compact and lightweight, this notebook measures 13.15 x 10.63 x 1.33 inches (W x D X H) and weighs just 6.1 pounds.

Power
It comes with a NiMH battery--with an expected battery life of approximately 3.5 hours under typical conditions--and AC charger pack. It is covered by a 1-year limited warranty. ... Read more

This Gateway m305CRV laptop is very nice. Not a be all end all desktop replacement of course. But a full featured laptop that does anything you ask it to. The Intel Extreme 2 Graphics are pretty good, and you can have up to 64 mb of AGP accelerated memory by setting it through the bios which is nice. The hard drive is sound. And the Intel Pentium 4 Mobile Celeron is definitely not your run of the mill celeron processor. It features the intel mobile Pentium 4 core, and unlike other celerons it features 256Kb of L2 cache rather than the normal 128Kb found in budget cpu's making this celeron faster than normal celerons. Also the system features DDR Ram which is a Huge plus for performance.

Basically it comes down to this. This laptop should perform anything you want it to do including light gaming and cpu intensive tasks. I personally watch dvd's while Im downloading music or surfing the internet on a very regular basis. I make slide shows, AVI movies and tons of other stuff. This laptop is my main computer now, I liked it enough to actually sell my less capable desktop.
Also my laptops specs are slightly different although it is the same model.
The only annoying thing about the laptop is a trade off for a nice feature as well. The fan is loud, and can be annoying while your not used to it, HOWEVER, because the fan runs alot the laptop very rarely gets warm, and virtually never gets Hot. This is the first laptop I can comfortably use on my lap, which is great and makes me not care about the fan one bit. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sporting an extremely potent Intel Pentium processor, integrated wireless communication and a practical price tag, the Gateway M350 brings desktop quality computing to the midlevel notebook world. Those in search of an ultra-lightweight portable may not warm up to the unit’s average 13.1 by 10.75 by 1.7-inch dimensions or 7.5 pound weight, but the Gateway M350 is a wise choice for most notebook fans.

Driven by a seriously powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with 512 KB of Level 2 cache to help you blaze through even the most demanding computations, the system is built for raw speed. Gateway has included a generous 512 MB of fast 333 MHz RAM memory to further assist with multitasking and complex applications. The graphics chipset, an integrated Intel with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, is equipped to efficiently run most 3-D tasks, but will have trouble smoothly rendering advanced 3-D games and animation applications.

Featuring a combination CD-RW/DVD drive, the Gateway M350 allows you to record and play audio discs, backup important files and experience your favorite movies. Other important amenities include an adequate 40 GB hard disk, a large 15-inch SXGA+ TFT display capable of an impressively detailed 1400x1050 resolution, and a 6-in-1 card reader for interpreting memory and media cards from high-tech devices such as digital cameras and PDAs.

The Gateway M350 incorporates numerous connectivity and expansion options, including a VGA port for external monitors, a parallel "printer" port, two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, a microphone and headphone jack, and an IEEE 1394 port for high-speed transfers to and from data-rich devices such as video cameras. An integrated V.92 56K Modem offers low-speed Internet and email access, and a 10/100 base-TX Ethernet interface permits high-speed network connections and Internet surfing. And for those times when you can’t plug in, the system also features 802.11g wireless capabilities.

Bundled software includes Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works Suite 2003. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Gateway as good as they were
For the price, this is a well loaded machine and an excellent desktop replacement.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop
I got an M350 about 6 months ago and I haven't had any problems at all. It has great speed, memory, and all around performance. I would recommend this laptop to anyone.

2-0 out of 5 stars Reliability problems
There are many features of this laptop that I like. However, it appears to have some serious reliability problems. In the four months that I've owned it, it has already had to be sent in for repairs twice, once for problems with the wireless card and once for a dead LCD monitor. Although it is covered under warranty, this still means being without it for over a week each time and paying almost $50 each time for the special shipping to send it to Dallas.

I would not buy this laptop again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!!
I am very happy and want to get my mom a laptop for christmas. I am going to get her this one, just like mine. It is sturdy, great features, and good price. I also think it is a very nice looking laptop that offers the speed and features that I need.

5-0 out of 5 stars What really matters...
...is how a company DEALS with a problem when it arises. Anything made by the hands of man can break. The mark of a truly great company is how id handles a sticky situation.
Within the first 15 days (which is explained to EVERY CUSTOMER when they purchase)if anything is wrong, they will give you a new system on the spot if possible. Since the above reviewer's computer broke after that time, her only option was the local service center who OF COURSE does not have laptop parts in stock. No service center does. The important thing is that Gateway has always handled my service with a smile and quoted me less than a week for turn around time. Gateway also has priority warranties that provide loaner systems to clients who cannot be without a computer. As a long time Gateway customer, I am sorry that this person had such a poor experience, but I would ask others to look at the things Gateway DOES offer... Extended and personalized warranty options, LOCAL service centers (neither Dell or Sony has that...) and training for those people that aren't as computer savvy as they would like to be. The 350 series is awesome. Dell can't beat it for quality and speed of components at this price point. GO GATEWAY! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Convergence is a reality
I got one as an all-in-one center for images, video, TV, music, etc. It does the job well. TV image quality is excellent, and so is TV recording. Burning your favorite shows to DVD with a few button clicks is incredibly easy.
If you want something for your den, this is a machine that should definitely be on your list for consideration.

5-0 out of 5 stars A nearly perfect living room PC.
The Gateway FMC-901X blends an innovative case design with high performance components. The first thing that strikes you about the Gateway Media Center is that it looks more like a piece of stereo equipment than a computer. In fact the stackable design computer is fits perfectly on top of a VCR or stereo. This was a big selling point with my wife.

The next best feature is that it comes a super-sized 250GB hard drive with a personal video recorder that lets you record TV shows and watch them on your schedule. The advantage over Tivo is there's no monthly fee or any way for some corporation to keep track of what you watch and when.

Now from the comfort of your couch, you can watch video, TV, play digital music, watch digital video, surf the Internet, play games, arrange digital photos and play or record DVDs.

5-0 out of 5 stars A fine-tuned media powerhouse.
Finally a piece of gear that looks like it belongs in an AV rack. I've been Very pleased with the appearance and usability of the system. Be aware that although it looks and performs like a component, it's also a PC. It comes with Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. That means music- and photo-playback features are excellent, and the PVR functions are a close match for a dedicated TV recorder.

Since it's a computer and not a TV it takes a couple of minutes to boot-up. To power the media center, you need the remote control unit and the wireless keyboard and mouse. I've taken to leaving the system on all the time. The mouse uses a new motion-sensing technology that lets you control it with natural hand movements. Unlike most wireless mice, this one actually has range. I can still operate from outside the house through the window, 25 feet away, as long as I stay in the line of sight.

The AV-component look of the FMC-901X is helped by the flip-down panel on the front, which hides many of the myriad of controls and ports: FireWire port, two USB 2.0 jacks, and slots for Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and Smart Media memory cards, making it easy to move digital photos & MP3's into the system.

Bottom-line: this system is perfect for any true media enthusiast

4-0 out of 5 stars Noticeably better than the Dell unit
TV quality using the Hauppauge TV tuner card is substantially better than in other Media Center Edition PCs.

It does do Tivo-like functionality, which is highly addictive once you have it.

The system is still a little louder than I would like due to the cooling fans, but no louder than my Tivo box.

The sleek design is what really makes it stand out from the competition. The 901 looks like an A/V component and not a clunky PC.
Now if only there was support for multiple HDTV tuners or multichannel SACD, it would be nearly perfect. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sitting atop the range of Gateway's entry-level desktop PC series, the Gateway 310XL is a great choice for the budget minded, balancing affordablilty with powerful features and including a 15-inch flat panel monitor. It comes equipped with everything for basic computing plus a built-in CD burner for backing up data, saving digital photos, and burning your own mix CDs. Other features include a 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 256 MB of RAM, and a 40 GB hard drive.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 40 GB Ultra DMA hard drive offers enough storage for all your documents, applications, and digital photos. However, it's less than adequate if you plan on maintaining a large multimedia (digital audio or video) library.
  • Processor: The 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor offers more than enough power for everyday computing tasks as well as database and multimedia applications (from gaming to digital audio and video).
  • Memory: The 310XL comes with a 256 MB built-in memory (DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz), which is adequate for basic computing needs. However, you'll want to add more memory for gaming and multimedia usage (the 310XL comes with an additional memory slot for a total of two). It also has an L2 cache of 512 KB.
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with separate drives for DVD playback and CD writing. The DVD-ROM drive can read discs at 16x speed (the standard speed for DVD movie playback), while the CD-R/W drive offers a high-speed 48x (read)/24x (rewrite)/ 48x (write) capability.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The 310XL comes with 104-key keyboard and a scrolling mouse with PS/2 connection.
Sound and Graphics
The 310XL features an integrated AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) that is built into the computer's main board. This computer also features headphone and microphone jacks, and two small, external speakers for enhanced music and gaming audio playback. The video/graphics card--Intel Extreme Graphics 2--is also integrated with up to 64 MB of dynamic video memory. It is suitable for basic needs, but it will need a better video/graphics card for professional design and graphics usage.

The included 17-inch flat panel monitor as a 15.9-inch viewable area.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a wide range of connectivity options with the S5400NX, including three PCI expansion slots and the following external ports:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The 310XL comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It also includes 6 months of AOL dial-up service and a 90-day trial with Norton Anti-Virus.

Dimensions and Weight
This micro-tower case measures 14.44 x 7 x 15.38 (W x D x H) and weighs 20.5 pounds.

What's in the Box
This package includes the Gateway 310XL desktop PC, 17-inch flat panel monitor, wired keyboard, PS/2 scroller mouse, power cord, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited warranty. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Little System for the $$
Gateway award winning desktops are always a good choice for customers. I wasn't disapointed a bit with the feature set of this machine. 256MB of memory and a 15 inch LCD were the primary feature sets that seperated this product from the other machines.

Amazon.com Product Description

Compact and battery efficient yet as powerful and versatile as many larger, bulkier portable computers, the Gateway 450X is a smart choice for those who put equal emphasis on performance and portability. Those who regularly push the capabilities of their notebook with complex professional applications, deep multitasking or 3-D games should perhaps explore Gateway's M500X series, which incorporates a more capable video card and double the RAM memory, but this model should suffice for light- to medium workloads.

Not surprisingly, the unit features Intel's new Centrino technology. Built upon a triad of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- Centrino-equipped notebooks deliver more power and more perks than their comparatively diminutive size and rated processor speed would otherwise indicate. In the case of the Gateway 450X, that processor is a 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium M. Along for the ride is a somewhat minimal alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM memory and an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics controller (32 MB dedicated video memory). In this configuration, the unit will certainly suffice for typical mobile tasks.

Measuring just 13.1 by 10.6 by 1.3 inches and tipping the scales at a mere 6.13 pounds with optical drive and battery installed, the Gateway 450X is a very compact unit. It does, however, feature several impressive mobile features, including an adequate 40 GB hard disk and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data and enjoy DVD movies. DVD writing is not supported. At 15 inches, its display is larger than might be expected, and capable of an extremely accurate 1400 by 1050 resolution. Communication options include not only a standard 56K dial-up modem and a 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, but also an integrated 802.11b wireless connection for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in.

Other important amenities include a pair of high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals such as scanners or digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (typically used for digital camcorder downloads), a VGA port for external monitors and a parallel "printer" port, but no S-Video TV-out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-balanced middle weight
I've used the Gateway 450X for several months now and find it to be a solid, reliable full-featured laptop that strikes a decent balance between weight and features.

The case is sleek, thin and modern, but plastic not metal (don't let the silver color mislead you).

The screen is bright with fine detail.

The keyboard is responsive with good feel. The wrist rest is a little deep compared to the ideal and there is only a touchpad, no pointing stick. However, the touchpad is better than many. I have an HP that drives me crazy with an overly sensitive touchpad.

The 450X has very good battery life and good wireless performance. I use a Linksys wireless network and the 450X has better range with its built-in wireless than older laptops with add-in cards.

There are some trade-offs. The optical drive is a good DVD-CD/RW combo drive, but no DVD writer is available. Similarly, the speakers are not really adequate for a multi-media presentation platform.

Gateway's dock or port replicator plugs into a slot on the bottom of the laptop case and promotes ventilation and a good typing angle. The availability of a port replicator was a requirement in my selection process (so you can leave printers and other peripherals plugged into the dock). I highly recommend this accessory. It makes working with a laptop much easier.

This is not a video creation platform, but for everyday work in Microsoft Office and web browsing, it's a great laptop with balanced features and excellent pricing.

I also recommend Gateway's service and support. Support information is individualized to your actual machine. Gateway's website resolves most issues for me without resort to techs, but when techs are necessary they are located in the United States and have consistently been helpful. This is my sixth Gateway computer and the service and support system is a key reason for coming back. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
Whether you play games, edit videos, create graphics and animation or run a business, the stunning new Gateway 820GM Media Center Desktop PC has you covered, with room to spare. It may cost somewhat more than the average PC, but for good reason. Gateway has equipped this potent new machine with top notch amenities from top to bottom, thus providing you with assurances against future upgrades for some time to come. Sporting such desirable amenities as a full GB of memory, double layer DVD recording, a monstrous 250 GB hard drive and all the connectivity you'll likely ever need, the 820GM Media Center Desktop PC is tomorrow's computer today.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC features one of today's fastest CPUs, an Intel Pentium 4 530. New for 2004, this is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and an 800 MHz front side bus for a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a beefy 3.0 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a strong CPU that's ready for any situation.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. For the 820GM Media Center Desktop PC, Gateway has installed a whopping 1024 MB (1 GB) of 400 DDR memory, configured in a dual channel setup for even faster response. This is a ton of memory even for a high-end machine, and its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is more than enough for any multitasking situation or complex application. Moreover, the system's mainboard is constructed to support RAM upgrades to an amazing 4 GB, though most users will never have the need.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" built-in video memory is preferable to a controller that's integrated on the mainboard and "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures.

The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC features an ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI-Express, a strong standalone graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video memory. This card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in most computer games and 3D animation packages. Ultra-hardcore gamers and serious 3D artisans who demand perfect frame rates at extremely high resolutions may want to upgrade to a far pricier 256 or 512 MB video model, but this card should be quite adequate for the majority of users.

Display:
Gateway has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC produces stereo and all-encompassing surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for seven distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. Gateway has also enclosed a pair of amplified desktop speakers, though serious audiophiles may want to upgrade to a three-piece subwoofer-enhanced set or a surround sound configuration.

Hard Drive
Even the busiest users will have a tough time ever filling this computer's hard drive. At 200 GB, it's spacious enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Furthermore, this particular hard drive is exceptionally quick – sporting a fast 7200-RPM speed, an 8 MB buffer, and a futuristic Serial ATA connection. These are all comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and performance of the system.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD burning, so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features two optical drives -- a CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a DVD +/- RW Double Layer Multi-Format drive through which you can not only do everything above but also take advantage of new double layer DVDs (twice the capacity of traditional DVDs). Moreover, with two optical drives you can make extremely fast CD copies.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports, you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Gateway has also included a trio of IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (often used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 8-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated Gigabit networking interface (substantially faster data transfer rates than traditional 100BaseT Ethernet) for Internet and network communication, and a standard 56K data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections

Operating System and Software
The 820GM Media Center Desktop PC features a comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Gateway will also pre-install Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity package, Microsoft's Picture It Premium photo and graphic editing suite, and a variety of high-end multimedia utilities such as the superb Nero 6 Suite CD and DVD burning package.

Control
The system includes a Gateway Premium Multimedia Keyboard and a two-button mouse with scroll wheel. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The 2 month computer.
It's a nice computer, great specs, but when the power supply
failed it became an expensive doorstop.
My M675 worked fine for two months when the power supply was
bathed in the cold winter air at floor level, but when spring
arrived the power supply overheated and failed.
I plugged in the second power supply I received with the
port replicator. It failed after 20 minutes.
Gateway customer support was minimally helpful. They sent me
a new power supply ( I had to give them a credit card number ???). I attached the port replicator (a difficult feat)
and used the power jack on the replicator (to see if the jack
on the computer was the problem). The 3rd power supply
failed after 10 minutes. The power supply say 150 watts
maximum on its case. The computer says 150 watts of power
on its case, so the power supply is operating at its maximum
capacity, and apparently beyond. After calling customer
support again I was told the power jack was the problem and
I would have to send the computer to Solectron for repair,
although I had told the technician the computer was working
without any problems. Since I feel the problem is an inadequate
power supply, I am reluctant to commit my unblemished computer
to the mirkly uncertanties of Solectron, and I am left to find
a dependable power supply on my own.

5-0 out of 5 stars Once skeptical, now a believer
I've always used HP notebooks and had what I considered "typical" glitches (periodic crashes, screen freezing, network connections being dropped). I started researching the M675 because Money Magazine reviewed it highly and TechEdge gave it Editor's Choice. I've never used a Gateway and always considered their products more consumer focused, not everyday workhorses. I've had this machine for 2 months and it has made me a believer. I've never since experienced the glitches from before and it truly has more power than my new desktop. Unlike the other reviewers, any questions I've had were quickly taken care of on their live chat or in a Gateway store. I give their service a 5-star as well as the product.
What's hot:
-Speed!
-full size keyboard WITH a 10-key and real function keys
-scroll wheel below the touchpad for quickly navigating web pages
-ports out the ears: 4 USB (2 in back, 1 on each side), firewire & s-video
-hot keys for mail, web, and to switch on/off wireless-g
-awesome screen for watching DVD's
What's not:
-It's a beast to carry. Don't plan on much traveling unless you have a sherpa
-The fan is noisy, when it runs
-The touchpad gets bumped during typing and skips the cursor (or it could be my oversized hands)

Bottom-line, the reviewers who do this for a living are right, this is a choice system, and Gateway backs it up with good service.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good system, but Customer Service.....
I agree with the previous reviewer that Gateway customer service is lacking. In my case, I ordered the PC from the Gateway website with their "order by 12/19 to receive by 12/24" which was missing the fine print that the shipping guarantee didn't apply to desktops or notebooks. I contacted Gateway on 12/24 when the PC didn't arrive and was notified that the guarantee didn't apply and they were sorry. Later I tracked my shippment and it was direct shipped from Singapore and I received it on 1/2.

After I got it, I will say that it is a very impressive system, almost an equal to my HP desktop. Not everything works well on a widescreen monitor, but with a little tweaking everything will work. The 54g built in wireless works perfectly with my Linksys network and there is an "on/off" button for the radio if you are using batteries and don't need it. My only complaint with the PC is the short battery time and lack of location to add a second battery. Considering that this stays plugged in 99% of the time it isn't a huge issue, but I like to have options.

Even though I like the system, I will think twice before buying a PC from Gateway again. ...

It is backed by a one-year limited warranty. ... Read more
