4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I got this player for my birthday. It has been the best that i have used.

Pros: everything pretty much

Cons: the only thing that i dont like is the radio function.

2-0 out of 5 stars One Viable Function
The DMP-310 really has only one viable function: playback of MP3's, for which it works very well for the price.

The problems unfold from there: the control wheel is extremely difficult to use (believe it or not) and has a very slow response to touch.

The radio function is useless, as it picks up barely any stations and mysteriously begins recording if one hits the control wheel in a wrong fashion. The Gateway website attributes this to hitting the "Next" button on the control wheel...which is how you change the channel in the first place.

The voice recording function is just plain bad, picking up a multitude of fuzz and static on even the calmest recording.

USB connectivity was nice--it connects directly to the computer so it's very simple to use and then drag-and-drop songs onto it.

The earphones are of extremely low quality.Upon adjustment to fit my ear, the right earphone actually broke on the first use.

Another thing that really bothered me was the "feel" of the product. It is made of very lightweight plastic--it doesn't feel very sturdy and I was afraid it would crack easily upon dropping.

3-0 out of 5 stars 3 stars for my first MP3 player
The CONs:
- it does drain a battery.I feel like I have to change it often, but its a AAA to thats probably why
- the navigation button doesnt always work as well as it should.I feel like its difficult to skip to the next song...forget this if at all if you are working out doing something high impact....you need a steady hand to do it and several attempts
- volume level doesnt go that high
- radio doesnt pick up stations and its not easy to set them
- cant do your own playlist in the the order you want.It sorts it alphabetically. You can do random but sometimes w hen working out i want to put songs in a certain order

PRO's:
- so small and lightweight!!! this is a great feature.
- i have the 256 mb capcity and sometimes i fit 90 songs on it.
- its really easy to plug and play into a computer!
- great for a commuter

I got this as a gift and as its my first one I have to say overall I love it as its much smaller and easier than a cd player when working out and commutting. However when I really think about it when I do get another one I probably will be checking out other ones unless they improve the navigation buttons and battery life. But seeing as how I have no experience with other MP3 players I dont know if this is a norm or not.

4-0 out of 5 stars Decent MP3 Player
I bought this as an upgrade to a 128 MB player, and thus far, don't mind it. It holds a lot of music (110+ songs in MP3Pro format, use MusicMatch to convert for free). The screen is big enough and shows all the nessisary info, though for some reason, the song time is messed up occasionally. Though, for example, it is a 4 minute song, the display says 2 minutes, and every second on the countup timer takes 2 seconds. Strange, but not really a crisis.

It's dirt easy to transfer songs, too; just plug the player into a USB port and drag and drop in Windows Explorer. Windows 2000, ME, and XP have the USB driver built in, too.

I like the size; not too big or too small. I wouldn't mind it being a sliver smaller, but oh well. I like the earphones that come with it too; nice and small, yet comfortable. The belt clip and neckstrap are nice, too.

I havent used the FM tuner much, but when I did, it picked up the popular stations well, but none of the weaker stations. The voice recorder is great for recording notes to yourself, but too weak to make recordings of a lecture. You can record from the radio, too, which is cool, if not kinda pointless.

The navigation button is frustrating at times -it pauses when I try to skip forward, or it doesn't do anything when I press forward- but I usually get it. It doesn't have a browse feature, either, so you must manually go through all the songs to get to the one you want. One thing I hate is the battery life; it seems that every few hours I must change it. It's probably more like 6, but still.

The customer service is great, too. My first one had a loose wire and kinda melted (kool to look at, anyhow) and I called them and it was replaced within 10 days, free of charge.

PROS
-Cost: only $125 now
-Size: about the size of two of my fingers (I'm a big guy though)
-Capasity: Over 4hrs/110 songs w/ MP3Pro.
-4 in 1: Works great as voice recorder, FM tuner (for strong stations), and thumbdrive.
-Included Accesories (Belt clip, neckstrap, USB extention cable)
-Great customer support.

CONS
-Buttons don't always work.
-FM tuner bad on weaker signals.
-Battery life: 5-6 hrs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy a Nomad Muvo Instead
I bought this player as a replacement for my Muvo which died after about a year of use. That came with just 3 months warranty so there was nothing I could do about it.About Gateway's DMP-310:

I like the extra features. The voice recorder and FM tuner are a nice bonus and the display is great. It ultra-portable and it comes with its own leather case with belt clip attached which is also very nice.

What I don't like:The volume quality is terrible!I am comparing it with the Muvo which is built in the same way, so I don't understand why the volume would be so different.Battery life is the pits!I have had this player for four days now and have gone through as many batteries. Each has lasted less than 2 hours, even after turning off the backlight feature and setting the energy saving mode on.I'm not sure if I got a bad apple or if this is common with these players, but it appears that I will be spending more on batteries than on music. The Muvo, was not the greatest battery saver either, but I could at least expect to get a week of use out of it before the battery died. This DMP-310 requires a daily battery change even with light use. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gateway products are the future!
I'm sorry, but i disagree with most of the reviews for this product. From my experiance with Gateway products, i've always received the best and top in technology. I've tried a lot of electronics including computers, mp3 players, receivers, dvd players, etc, and Gateway would give you the best of all. I've tried Dell, Sony, and others.. Only to be disappointed in the end. If you want the best go with Gateway. If you have problems with the product maybe it's not the product but the user. I've found out that about 85% of the time it's the person operating the equipment not the equipment malfunctioning.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Like the Ability to Have all my music in one place.
This MP3 player is a pretty good investment.I know that some have said that its not worth a darn but I havent had too much trouble with it yet.At first it did have some trouble with the track lists but I updated the firmware and that fixed it all.The files for updating the firmware are at http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=7004768
But after the update I have not had any problems and the tracks are staying in numerical order. And unlike other reviews have said there is a way to change WMedia Player to include the track number if needed. This Mp3 player is also very user -intuitive, very easy to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disheartening
I had a Gateway computer for a while and never had very few problems and my interactions with their customer service were quick and effective.Imagine my disappointment with this product. While I would buy another computer from Gateway I would not by any sort of peripheral device. This product was not user friendly and the instructions that came with it did not help at all.In addition you have to go through Windows Media which has bugs of its own.The software on the product itself also left much to be desired.Maybe they have improved their operating system since this product but it was terrible.Don't even try to create a favorites list. Most of the time it won't save the list the rest of the time it will skip to some other song that isn't on the list.Whatever you do, stay away from this MP3 Player.

1-0 out of 5 stars ANGRY PISSED AND DISAPPOINTED (Gateway to Hell)
I bought my player thru Gateway.com thru financing. Well it just turned utself off & never turned on again, & I just had for 7 mos. I emailed Gateway's tech Support, it took 3 weeks for them to realize that they could'nt help me at all..The Tech Dept STINKS!!!! Then I called the custmer service to tell them my problem, guess what ''TOO BAD SO SAD''they couldnt do anything about it because the warranty expired but I told them a year had'nt even passed yet, what kind of junk are they selling I asked. $300 down the drain NEVER AGAIN...& another little thing I saw on the Consumeraffairs.com page, there was a woman who complained to Gateway about her problem and they gave her an address to send her written complaint to. Turns out that the address given to her is a dead end, letters to never be read, So she found an address to the Execs office and they finally responded to her problem, found out that some of the stuff they sell is REFURBISHED. DON'T BUY FROM GATEWAY!!!! DON'T BUY FROM GATEWAY!!!!cus GATEWAY really is a GATEWAY TO HELL!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars bad product, bad service
The jukebox was working okay [Though it was buggy from the start] until it died after about 3 months, so I had it sent in for repairs, which they said would take up to 10 days. That was about 4 months ago, so I called to see what the deal was and found out recently that it was "lost in service." So I was told a new one would be sent to me, and it would take up to 1 week. That was over 2 weeks ago. I called to get a refund, but apparently that is impossible [Gateway's return policy is 15 days], and I've pretty much just been told to wait for the phantom replacement jukebox, but no one knows how long it will take for it to be sent [by the way, this is just something that annoyed me: Gatewayhires some of the slowest and underqualified technical support people ever. One woman didn't even know what an mp3 player was]. I've begun to assume my $350 is lost for good and am starting to look at ipod and sony's new walkman. Never buying Gateway again. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It is great but.
It is great, It is compact, It is discret, The equalizer is magnific, The voice recording has a good sensibility, In general its sound is good (not great, I would like more volumen but I am conform because it was not expensive), The better in its clase. It comes with the neck lance and the belt clip (It is pretty). You can check the technical specificatons and pay attention with the output power. It is very difficult to find a good micro small FM radio, This item has not a good reception. I did not have problem with the usb tranference. I did not have problems with the jostick. I bought this one only because I do not have more money righ now. I was thinking too in buy the iriver version but the 64MB is discontinued. I am thinking about to sell it and to buy other with more memory, and maybe you would do the same, in this case if you already have the money to buy a better do it. It eat somes bateries (maybe a good recomandation is to buy an mp3 player with AA Batery instead a AAA batery. NOTE: IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTAN: LIKE I WAS WORRIED ABOUT, THE UNIT GOT DIED AFER SOME MONTHS, AT FIRST THE UNIT GOT SHUTTING DOWN WITHOUT A RAZON WITH NEW BATERIES, I HAD TO TURNED ON AGAIN, THEN THE PC STOP TO VIEW THE DEVICE AND AT THE END GOOD BYE GATEWAY. 4-0 out of 5 stars TV's fine for the money
So I went to pick this tv up yesterday...set it up and my first impression was that visually the tv is nice looking, really really huge screen! (coming from a 35in crt)So I hook everything (and there are alot of connection choices)up and put in Monsters, Inc. My first impression : Nice color, what the hell is wrong with the blacks?THERE WERE TONS OF GREEN DOTS IN ALL OF THE BLACK!!!!!!!! ACCCK! So I thought a bit and switched out the video from component to Svideo..problem solved, the picture quality is really nice on DVDs for this price point ($1999) My only gripe is that regular cable looks not so great, but thats a small point since I dont watch anything but the news.

In the end, I think this is a great starter plasma or a purchase for someone trying to build credit (like me)

130. Gateway 23" Widescreen HD-Ready LCD Flat Panel TV

Asin: B0000ZJ8O4

Amazon.com Product Description

Sharp and bright with abundant connections for both your PC and your home-theater gear, Gateway's 23-inch widescreen LCD TV is one versatile television. The set's broad, sleek screen has a 15:9 widescreen aspect ratio that more closely matches the dimensions of your favorite movies than do standard 4:3 screens. Further, it's fully compatible with DTV set-top boxes and high-definition computer signals. It has component-video, VGA, and DVI (digital visual interface) inputs, not to mention an NTSC tuner for immediate over-air reception. Hook it up with a progressive-scan DVD player to get the full benefit of your discs' seamless, 480p resolution.

Kitchens, bedrooms, offices, or dormitories will be equally well served by the set, which includes a table stand to simplify desk- or table-top positioning. LCDs are more power-efficient than either CRTs or plasma screens, and while they may not be as bright, overall, as plasmas, they get more wallet friendly every week. You'll see none of the irritating scan lines or flickering that's visible on CRT sets or monitors, and you can forget about both ghosting and image burn-in, no matter how many hours a week you spend parked in front of your favorite video game.

This Gateway TV is no slouch in the specs department, offering an impressive 500:1 contrast ratio, high (450 cd/m2) brightness, and a wide, 170-degree viewing angle. A total of nine video inputs consist of RGB PC, DVI, high-definition component-video, two S-video, three composite-video, and an RF coaxial/antenna input.

The set's motion-adaptive 3D digital comb filter enhances resolution by removing blurred edges between colors and reducing dot crawl (tiny, moving dots of color along a sharp color separation in a vertical line, as in a depiction of a character's striped T-shirt).

Stereo speakers with 5 watts per channel offer strong, clear sound, and you can always plug a pair of headphones into the set's headphone jack for more private (or just louder) listening. Bass, treble, and audio balance controls let you tailor the set's sound output, and, for more spacious-sounding programs, 3D sound processing simulates surround sound through any two speakers. A stereo minijack (.125-inch) output facilitates hookup with optional external computer speakers, and a monaural minijack output lets you use an optional subwoofer to enhance the low-frequency response of your listening system.

5-0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for.
I've heard horror stories about getting a wireless network configured in your house.Either I'm very lucky or this product is better than a lot of the cheap stuff out there.
Set-up was straight forward, quick and easy.I have never had to touch it since the initial setup. I understand that may have to do with the Broadcom chip set which is more dependable, but also more expensive than some others.(My cable modem, on the other hand, needs rebooting every couple days. But that's another story.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Gateway 46" Plasma Review
I have had the television for 2 weeks and i am now returning it due to the poor picture quality.Contrast is not good on DVDs, i even tried S-Vid and Component but both did not change the problems.I used Schindler's List, Lord Of The Rings, and Finding Nemo to try and calibrate the color and contrast.
The opening menu for Schindler's list looked horrible in contrast. You could clearly see three different shades of black and white, which should have blended together. In LOTR during the council of elrond the picture was either too grainy or fleshtone colors on the characters faces were too bright. Finally on Finding Nemo the television had problems finding a medium between making the bright colors too brite or too bland, again no easy medium.
The television would also not turn on if i did not turn it off from the rear power switch each time. And after playing Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow for all of 30 minutes there was already burn in on the lower right of the screen.

I got the television for 3000, it might be cheaper than an HDTV but in my opinion its not worth it. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
Not so large that they’re prohibitively cumbersome or so small that they’re prohibitively pricey, Gateway’s newest eMachines blend sensible styling with today’s most desirable amenities and enough power for all but the most demanding notebook users. This model, the eMachines M6811 Notebook PC, sports state-of-the-art 64-bit power, DVD recording and a movie-friendly widescreen display, and is therefore an excellent choice for those seeking a notebook equally adept for entertainment and multimedia pursuits as it is for business.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (processor), a massive array of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today’s notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU’s on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The eMachines M6811 is equipped with an extremely powerful AMD Athlon 64 3400 Mobile Processor running at 2.2 GHz and featuring 1 GB of Level 2 cache for enhanced data access speed. This is one of the new breed of "64-bit" processors, which differ from traditional 32-bit processors in that they deliver substantially faster, more capable computing. There is, however, one catch -- in order to take full advantage of the capabilities of a 64-bit processor, you need to use a 64-bit operating system and 64-bit applications. Unfortunately, few 64-bit apps currently exist. Nevertheless, 64-bit processors are fully backward compatible with today’s 32-bit software and do provide some performance increase. Ultimately, a 64-bit processor is a good idea for anyone looking toward the future.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The eMachines M6811 incorporates 512 MB of RAM of PC2700 DDR RAM, expandable to 1.2 GB. This is an average RAM allotment and speed in midlevel and high-end notebooks.

Video:
CPU’s are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system’s graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. Dedicated video memory is far preferable to "shared" video memory, where the graphics controller appropriates a portion of the main system memory. With 64 MB of video memory at your bidding, you’ll have no problem accurately displaying 2D graphics and many 3D apps as well. Serious gamers and 3D artisans who absolutely need ultra-fluid, top-level visuals for today’s most challenging 3D applications may want to upgrade this component, though most notebook veterans should be quite satisfied as is.

Display:
Some of today’s largest notebooks are equipped with massive 17-inch displays, while many super-compact "ultra-lights" sport substantially smaller 12-inch displays. The eMachines M6811 features a midsize 15.4-inch display in the same widescreen format favored by moviemakers.

Hard Disk:
The eMachines M6811 features an 80 GB hard disk. While this isn’t a particularly large hard drive by desktop standards, it’s quite impressive in a notebook and ideal for those who need to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD+R/RW drive through which you can do all of the above. The unit’s 2.4x DVD+R/RW, 2x DVD-R/RW, 6x CD-R and 10x CD-RW burning speeds are typical.

Audio:
The eMachines M6811 is equipped with an integrated audio chip, built-in stereo speakers, a microphone jack and headphone/audio out.

Keyboard and Controls:
You’ll control your notebook via a standard mobile keyboard and a touchpad with vertical scroll zone.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The eMachines M6811 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11g wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a handy 6-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDA’s and the like.

Operating System and Software:
Gateway has fitted the unit with today’s most popular operating system, Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition. Other applications include Microsoft’s Works 7.0 productivity suite, Microsoft’s Picture It! Standard Edition 7.0 digital photography studio, and an array of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today’s most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and bulky for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that generally aren’t as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 7.5 lbs and 14 by 10.4 by 1.6 inches, the eMachines M6811 is of medium size.

Power:
The unit is equipped with an 8-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
Founded in 1998 and acquired by Gateway in early 2004, eMachines today is one of the largest vendors of PCs sold through U.S. retailers. With the T2862 Desktop PC, eMachines targets entry-level and undemanding consumers who want a desktop computer but can't justify the price of a high-end model and probably don't need one anyway. Featuring a cost-effective yet reasonably powerful CPU, minimal memory and mediocre 3D graphics performance, the unit is not designed for a top-level business environment or gaming den. But if word processing, personal finances, email and Internet surfing and CD burning are your priorities, the eMachines T2862 is a sensible and extremely affordable solution.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Many entry-level desktops utilize "budget" processors such as an Intel Celeron, and that is indeed the case with this model. But this particular processor is a new and recently enhanced version of the venerable Celeron, nicknamed the Celeron D and carrying 256 KB of Level 2 cache and a 533 MHz system bus for perceptibly faster performance than Celerons manufactured prior to 2004. This is the second fastest Celeron currently on the market, a 2.66 GHz version that doesn't approach the raw data-churning speed of a high-end Pentium 4 but certainly holds its own against lower-end Pentiums and AMD Athlons.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. eMachines has partnered this unit's processor with 256 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory, the minimum recommended allotment for a modern PC. Thusly, the eMachines T2862 is not ideal for demanding multitasking sessions or ultra-complex applications in its stock form, though users may upgrade the memory (at additional cost) to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it better handles complex procedures. The eMachines T2862 is equipped with an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video controller that is integrated on the motherboard and shares 64 MB of the system's main memory. Thusly, the unit is not intended for anyone who regularly works or plays with demanding 3D animations such as those found in the latest high-end games, unless they first purchase and install a separate graphics card. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
Audio is produced via an AC 97-compatible chip integrated on the motherboard. AC-97 is today's most accepted entry-level PC audio standard. Though not as sophisticated as most standalone audio cards (its audio specs aren't as good and it supports limited speaker configurations), this integrated chipset is perfectly adequate for most stereo applications. eMachines will also enclose a pair of small desktop speakers for your listening enjoyment.

Hard Drive
The built-in 60 MB hard drive sports enough space for a typical home or home office situation or student setup. However, if you regularly load large applications, save large files, and maintain a sizeable multimedia or music collection, you may need to upgrade this drive, transfer files to a compact disc to free up room, or add another hard drive.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

The eMachines T2862 features a DVD/CD-RW drive that allows you to install applications from CD, play and burn music and data CDs, and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not possible unless you upgrade or replace this drive.

Connectivity and Expansion
Though designed for the budget conscious, the eMachines T2862 nevertheless sports all the standard amenities, and then some. Communication options include an Intel PRO 10/100Mbps integrated LAN for high-speed Internet and email access and a standard 56K modem for low-speed dial-up service. For reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras and PDAs, the system features an 8-in-1 Digital Media Manager. And, with no less than five high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal, you'll have plenty of places to plug your plug and play peripherals. eMachines has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port, most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders.

Operating System and Software
The system features a surprisingly generous software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsotf's Works 8.0 productivity suite, Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center and several useful multimedia and music utilities.

Keyboard and Mouse
A Standard eMachines Multimedia Keyboard and 2-button mouse (with scroll wheel) are enclosed. ... Read more

140. Gateway M405XL Notebook PC (1.50 GHz Pentium M (Centrino), 256 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Drive, DVD/CD-RW Combo)
by Gateway

Amazon.com Product Description

Accenting portability and affordability rather than crushing power, the three-deep Gateway M405 series of notebooks is worthy of investigation by budget-conscious folks who need to keep their computer nearby wherever they go. This model, the M405XL, is the most expensive and certainly most capable of the M405 series, offering such goodies as wireless communication, CD burning, DVD playing and a comparatively large 40 GB hard disk.

Though not a true ultra-lightweight notebook such as those found in Gateway's slightly pricier 200 series, the M405XL is nevertheless comfortably portable at just 13.15 by 10.63 by 1.33 inches and 6.10 pounds As is typical for many of today's small-scale notebooks, the unit features Intel's new Centrino technology. Built upon a triad of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- Centrino-equipped notebooks deliver more power and more perks than their size and rated processor speeds might otherwise indicate. In the case of the M405XL, that processor is a speedy 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium M. Gateway has also included 256 MB of DDR SDRAM memory and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video controller, thus giving users solid general computing capabilities but unspectacular multitasking, high-end business and 3-D performance.

The M405XL is crammed with impressive mobile features such as a 40 GB hard disk and an optical drive that permits CD playing and burning and DVD playing. The unit's display delivers a surprisingly generous 15 inches of viewing area and a sufficient maximum resolution of 1024 by 768. Communication options include not only a standard 56K dial-up modem and a 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, but also an integrated 802.11b wireless connection for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in. DVD writing is not supported.

Other important amenities include a pair of high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals such as scanners or digital cameras, a VGA port for external monitors, a parallel "printer" port, and an S-Video TV-out, a full size keyboard and a convenient EZ Pad pointing device. An IEEE 1394 FireWire port (typically used for digital camcorder downloads) is not included.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition and a 90-day trial with Norton AntiVirus. ... Read more
