Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
Developed primarily for those who prioritize futuristic conveniences and easy portability over mind-numbing power, the Gateway 4525GZ Notebook PC is ideal for businesspeople, personal users and students who are always on the go. Highlights include DVD recording, wireless connectivity, a surprisingly spacious 80 GB hard drive, and battery-efficient Intel Centrino technology. Diehard gamers and serious 3D artists and designers will want to look for a notebook with superior 3D graphics capabilities, but most everyone else should find the Gateway 4525GZ delivers enough power and all the amenities they’re likely to need.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (processor), a massive array of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today’s notebooks are equipped with state-of-the-art CPU’s on par with those found in the finest desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Gateway 4525GZ is equipped with an Intel Pentium M 705 processor running at 1.5 GHz. This is one of three components (the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless) that comprise Intel’s efficient Centrino system. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller and easier on the batteries than their non-Centrino counterparts, with a heaping helping of "Level 2" cache for faster retrieval of recently accessed information. It is important to note, however, that this particular processor is the most affordable of the newly revamped Pentium M roster, and as such offers just one MB of Level 2 cache. While this is an impressive total when compared to non-Pentium M CPUs, it is half the Level 2 cache of all other new 2004 Pentium M CPUs. Nevertheless, it should easily handle most common mobile tasks while at the same time improving battery life.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Gateway 4525GZ incorporates 512 MB of RAM of PC2700 DDR RAM, an average allotment and speed for midlevel notebooks. This total may later be expanded to an impressive 2 full GB, more than enough for even the most demanding multitasking purposes.

Video:
CPU’s are usually so busy performing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen, a duty that falls upon the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system’s graphics controller is an Intel Extreme Graphics 3D with 32 MB of "shared" video memory. This is an entry-level video controller, unequipped with "dedicated" memory and appropriating just 32 MB of the system’s main memory. As such, the system will accurately display 2D and some midlevel 3D tasks, but is not recommended for modern 3D games or other demanding applications such as 3D animation and 3D graphic design.

Display:
Some of today’s largest notebooks are equipped with massive 17-inch displays, while many super-compact "ultra-lights" sport substantially smaller 12-inch displays. The Gateway 4525GZ features a midsize TFT XGA 15-inch non-widescreen display.

Hard Disk:
A sub-compact notebook with a truly large hard drive is not commonplace, yet the Gateway 4525GZ houses a generous 80 GB of internal storage space. If you need to install and operate a broad range of applications and also keep a library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files, the unit is up to the job.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Most drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD+/- RW drive through which you can do all of the above.

Audio:
Gateway has equipped the system with an integrated audio chip, built-in stereo speakers, a microphone jack and headphone/audio out.

Keyboard and Controls:
You’ll control your notebook via a standard mobile keyboard and a touchpad with vertical scroll zone.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The Gateway 4525GZ offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11g wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a versatile 4-in-1 Digital Medai Manager for reading memory cards from devices such as cameras, PDAs and the like.

Operating System and Software:
Gateway has fitted the unit with today’s most popular operating system, Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition. Other applications include Microsoft’s Works 7.0 productivity suite, Microsoft’s Money 2004 financial center, and an array of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today’s most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and bulky for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that generally aren’t as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and fit comfortably inside a large purse. Tipping the scales at just 5.5 lbs and measuring a mere 12.9 by 10.5 by 1.08 inches, the Gateway 4525GZ is small enough to fit inside a briefcase or large purse and not so heavy that it’s prohibitively cumbersome on long journeys.

Power:
The unit is equipped with an 6-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The BasicsTaking advantage of several recent technological innovations yet priced in the same ballpark as many desktops that do not, Gateway’s 550GR Desktop PC is a powerful yet comparatively affordable computing centerpiece ideal for virtually any office, personal or leisure environment. Businesspeople will appreciate the unit’s powerful Pentium 4 processor and huge hard drive, multimedia buffs will love the comprehensive connectivity and advanced DVD recording facilities, and gamers should get along quite well with the system’s solid 3D graphics performance. Though you can certainly spend more for a desktop computer, the Gateway 550GR delivers most everything a demanding user needs at a reasonable price point.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The Gateway 550GR features one of today’s fastest CPUs, an Intel Pentium 4 540. New for 2004, this is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a scorching 3.2 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a strong CPU that’s ready for any situation.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. For the Gateway 550GR, Gateway has installed 512 MB of 400 DDR memory, configured in a dual channel setup for even faster response. This is an average RAM allotment for a computer of this caliber, but its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is more than enough for most multitasking situations and complex applications. Moreover, the system’s mainboard is constructed to support RAM upgrades to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU’s are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system’s main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures. The Gateway 550GR features an ATI Radeon X300 SE PCI-Express, a strong graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video memory. This card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in most computer games and 3D animation packages. Hardcore gamers and 3D artisans who demand perfect frame rates at extremely high resolutions may want to upgrade to a far pricier 256 or 512 MB video card, but this card should be quite adequate for the majority of users.

Display:
Gateway has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today’s many alternatives.

Sound
The Gateway 550GR produces stereo and surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for six distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. Gateway has also enclosed a pair of amplified desktop speakers, though serious audiophiles may want to upgrade to a three-piece subwoofer-enhanced set or a surround sound configuration.

Hard Drive
At 200 GB, the unit’s internal hard drive is spacious enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Furthermore, this particular hard drive is exceptionally quick – sporting a fast 7200 RPM speed, an 8 MB buffer, and a futuristic Serial ATA connection. These are all comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and performance of the system.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features two optical drives -- a CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a DVD +/- RW drive through which you can do everything else listed above. Moreover, this drive supports "double layer" DVD recording, effectively delivering nearly twice the capacity of traditional DVDs.

Connectivity and Expansion
With a truly grand total of seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports, you’ll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Gateway has also included a trio of IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 8-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated Gigabit networking interface (substantially faster data transfer rates than traditional 100BaseT Ethernet) for Internet and network communication, and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections.

Operating System and Software
The Gateway 550GR features a comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft’s beefy Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Gateway will also pre-install Microsoft’s Money 2004 financial center, Microsoft’s Works 7.0 productivity package, Microsoft’s Picture It Premium photo and graphic editing suite, and a variety of high-end multimedia utilities such as the superb Nero 6 Suite CD and DVD burning package.

Control

1-0 out of 5 stars Dies after short use
I bought this camera as a graduation gift, so I wasn't able to test it during Gateway's 15 day full refund policy. As soon as it was used, it said the battery was low on brand new batteries. The representative at Gateway said they could replace the product (which took 3 months). The replacement did the exact same thing as the original, so I called Gateway again. This time, after talking to a supervisor, I was offered an upgrade to the Gateway M42. I have not gotten this yet, but I am waiting to see if this camera has the same issue.

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
Founded in 1998 and acquired by Gateway in early 2004, eMachines today is one of the largest vendors of PCs sold through U.S. retailers. With the T2984 Desktop PC, eMachines targets budget-conscious buyers who can't afford or justify a top-rung unit but desire more power and perks than a low-end machine can provide. Similar in stature and design to eMachines entry-level T2862 but with moderate enhancements to many critical components, the T2984 is suitable for anyone who doesn't foresee themselves taxing their computer with sophisticated business-oriented applications, high-end graphics packages or the latest 3D games.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Many entry-level desktops utilize "budget" processors such as an Intel Celeron, and that is indeed the case with this model. But this particular processor is a new and recently enhanced version of the venerable Celeron, nicknamed the Celeron D and carrying 256 KB of Level 2 cache and a 533 MHz system bus for perceptibly faster performance than Celerons manufactured prior to 2004. This is the fastest Celeron currently on the market, a 2.93 GHz version that doesn't quite approach the raw data-churning speed of a high-end Pentium 4 but more than holds its own against even midlevel Pentiums and AMD Athlons.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. eMachines has partnered this unit's processor with 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory, the standard allotment for a modern PC. Thusly, the eMachines T2984 is ready to speed you through medium-duty multitasking sessions and many of today's complex applications. Moreover, users may upgrade the memory (at additional cost) to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it better handles complex procedures. The eMachines T2984 is equipped with an Intel Extreme Graphics 3D video controller that is integrated on the motherboard and shares 64 MB of the system's main memory. Thusly, the unit will efficiently display 2D and many 3D applications but is not recommended for demanding 3D animations such as those found in the latest high-end games unless its graphics controller is first upgraded. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
Audio is generated via an AC 97-compatible chip integrated on the motherboard. AC-97 is today's most accepted midlevel PC audio standard. Though not as sophisticated as most standalone audio cards (its audio specs aren't as good and it supports limited speaker configurations), this integrated chipset is perfectly adequate for most stereo applications. eMachines will also enclose a pair of small desktop speakers for your listening enjoyment.

Hard Drive
The unit's 80 GB hard drive is considered average in today's desktop market, offering enough space for a typical roster of applications, files and multimedia or music content. However, if you foresee yourself gathering copious quantities of space-gobbling video footage or ultra-high resolution images, you may need to transfer files to a compact disc to free up room, upgrade this drive, or add another.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

The eMachines T2984 features dual optical drives -- a CD/RW drive for playing and burning CDs and a DVD-ROM drive for playing DVD movies and the like. DVD burning is not supported in this stock configuration.

Connectivity and Expansion
Though designed for the budget conscious, the eMachines T2984 nevertheless sports all the standard amenities, and then some. Communication options include an Intel PRO 10/100Mbps integrated LAN for high-speed Internet and email access and a standard 56K modem for low-speed dial-up service. For reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras and PDAs, the system features an 8-in-1 Digital Media Manager. And, with no less than five high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal, you'll have plenty of places to plug your plug and play peripherals. eMachines has not included an IEEE 1394 FireWire port, most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders.

Operating System and Software
The system features a surprisingly generous software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity suite, Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center and several useful multimedia and music utilities.

Keyboard and Mouse
A Standard Multimedia Keyboard and 2-button mouse (with scroll wheel) are enclosed. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The BasicsTaking advantage of several recent technological innovations yet priced in the same ballpark as many desktops that do not, Gateway’s 500GR Desktop PC is a powerful yet affordable computing centerpiece ideal for virtually any office, personal or leisure environment. Businesspeople will appreciate the unit’s powerful Pentium 4 processor and huge hard drive, while multimedia buffs will love the comprehensive connectivity and advanced DVD recording facilities. Gamers will probably want to upgrade the unit’s 3D graphics capabilities or explore other Gateway computers such as the more expensive yet more capable 550GR.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The Gateway 500GR features an Intel Pentium 4 530 CPU. The Gateway 500GR features an Intel Graphixs Media Accelerator 900 with 64 MB of shared video memory. Though this is a "shared memory" card, it is part of Intel’s brand new lineup of integrated video controllers that purportedly offer 170% faster performance than prior shared memory controllers. Hence, the system will deliver good performance in 2D applications and satisfactory performance in most low-end and midlevel 3D applications. However, gamers and 3D artisans who utilize the latest software and demand solid frame rates and extremely high resolutions will nevertheless want to upgrade to a graphics card with at least 128 MB of dedicated video memory.

Display:
Gateway has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today’s many alternatives.

Amazon.com Product Description

Compact and battery efficient yet more powerful and versatile than many larger, bulkier portable computers, the Gateway M505 series of notebooks are worthy candidates for those who put equal emphasis on performance and portability. Structurally similar to the less pricey Gateway M505X but featuring several faster or more capable components and the Windows XP Professional operating system rather than Windows XP Home, the Gateway M505XL is without question a high-end machine.

Not surprisingly, the unit features Intel's new Centrino technology. Built upon a triad of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- Centrino-equipped notebooks deliver more power and more perks than their comparatively diminutive size and rated processor speeds would otherwise indicate. In the case of the Gateway M505XL, that processor is a speedy 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium M, which works hand-in-hand with the system's 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory and impressively punchy ATI Radeon 9600 graphics controller (64 MB dedicated video memory) to efficiently handle all but the most complex 2-D and 3-D business and leisure notebook applications.

Measuring just 14 by 10 by 1.4 inches and weighing a mere 6.7 pounds with optical drive and battery installed, the Gateway M505XL is nevertheless crammed with impressive mobile features such as a comparatively spacious 60 GB hard disk and an optical drive that permits CD playing and burning and DVD playing and writing. The unit's display delivers a surprisingly generous 15.4 widescreen inches of viewing area at crystal clear 1280 by 800 resolutions, and its on-board stereo speaker system features a miniature subwoofer for added audio depth. Moreover, its communication options include not only a standard 56K dial-up modem and a 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, but also an integrated 802.11b wireless connection for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in.

Other important amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals such as scanners or digital cameras, two IEEE 1394 FireWire ports (typically used for digital camcorder downloads), a VGA port for external monitors, a parallel "printer" port, and an S-Video TV-out.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Professional Edition, Microsoft Works Suite 7.0 and a 90-day trial with Norton AntiVirus. ... Read more

I've had this notebook for 3 months now and it was amazing right from when I received it. Amazing features of this notebook includes Nice wide screen display and a pair of good internal speakers with subwoofer ideal for listening to music and watching movies. Recent games such as Final fantasy XI, Max Payne 2 and NFS underground runs very smoothly and the speedy pentium M processor handles most demanding applications well. The slot loading DVD drive is cool too, and most of all it has a AV control panel and it is light enough to be carried around. A quality product from Gateway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
As a web and graphic designer, I constantly put my computers to the test. This one keeps up. I can have several high-intensity programs running at the same time without bogging down all my system resources. Furthermore, the battery life is amazing (mine is over 4 hours), it is completely silent, doesn't get hot, light for its size, and stylish to boot. I am in love.

The only thing that marred my experience with this computer is receiving one with a dead pixel in the center of my display. Big bummer. Gateway won't fix it. Otherwise, this is one amazing laptop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing notebook
This laptop has everything one could need:
-Fast processor, good amount of memory, GREAT graphic card, DVD writer, and a wide-screen ideal for games, DVD viewing and any other multimedia applications. For music enthusiasts, a built-in music player on the left of the keyboard can be used to play audio cds or mp3s without even turning the laptop on. Also, the speakers are of very good quality and the laptop even has a built-in subwoofer.

I tried a lot of notebooks before buying the M505XL and I can safely say that this is one of the best. At this price, you can't get a better deal.

For gamers, as I mentioned the graphic card is amazing. You'll be able to play the latest games with the settings maxed out at an amazing frame rate. ONLY games such as Far Cry which actually compete with the graphic engine of Half Life 2 might show some slowdown, but removing advanced settings such as Anti-Aliasing will boost the frame rate while keeping excellent visual quality. Games that work perfectly with all the settings turned on: Need for speed underground, Halo, Call of duty, Final Fantasy XI, Unreal Tournament 2003...

Finally the notebooks's pretty light (6.7 pounds) and you can easily take it with you wherever you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Notebook, Great Price.
After a long search for a replacement laptop my search ended with the m505. I needed a notebook with solid construction, long battery life (Centrino), portability (under seven pounds and sturdy), capable of some gaming and graphics. My seach was narrowed between the Dell 8600 and this Gateway m505XL.

The m505 is all that is advertised.

Pros:
+ Solid Construction: Strong case with well built feel. Not aftraid to take anywhere (within reason)
+ User Interface: Both keyboard and trackpad have a nice feel and easy to use. The mouse buttons are a little hard to press initially but after some use move easier. The keyboard has a cool look but more improtantly has a nice sound and solid feel. Standard layout. It has an AC control panel that I will never use but is nice. The quick launch buttons are handy and well located.
+ Screen: This 15.4" WXGA screen is very crisp and bright. Perfect for computing and gaming. Movies look very nice but not as nice as they would on a WUXGA offered by some other systems (IMO the only advantage of a super high resolution screen).
+ Battery Life and Heat: Very cool and very long battery life. Can be considered a true laptop by not buring your lap (just gets a little warm during gaming)and providing over four and a half hours of normal operation.
+ Gaming: With the Radeon 9600 and 64MB video card, coupled with the 1.5 Centrino, this plays even the newest Direct X 9b games with great performance and look. Unexpected ability from a mobile notebook. Have played Tron 2.0, Call of Duty, Deus Ex - Invisible War and all look great.
+ Slot loading DVD-R. Nice front loading design with solid perfomance from this drive.
+ Many ports to choose from. 2x USB 2.0, 2x Firewire, S-Video, etc.

Cons:
- Ability to customize the order (upgrade drive or processor)
- Headphone jack is in the back. Strange.

Overall great notebook with a very good price. Gatway support has been overall very good and they have been responsive to my concerns or needs. The m505 is also sold by Gigabyte under the name of the n601. I am very happy with my purchase and I have had the notebook for over two week with a lot of exposue. Keeping me happy. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

There's a brave new world in home entertainment that doesn't include the traditional stand-alone audio-video separates. Slowly but surely, VCRs, compact disc players, DVD players and all the other gadgets and wires that have made their way into living and entertainment rooms across America are being replaced. In their stead is a single unit -- a specialized computer that handles all of the above in addition to Internet surfing, CD burning, and much more. Gateway's new FMC-901 Family Media Center PC is one such device.

Designed in a horizontal rather than vertical format much like many of the units it replaces, the FMC-901 is built to reside comfortably in a standard entertainment center, conveniently receiving its user input via a wireless keyboard or wireless, handheld remote control and cordless mouse. The latter two are of particular interest in that they respond to mid-air gestures -- you can program the remote to increase system volume whenever you raise you arm, for example.

Compared to mainstream business and high-end gaming PCs, the FMC-901 isn't a true powerhouse. Driven by a 2.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor running at 2.6 GHz and 256 MB of 333 MHz DDR SDRAM memory, the system's "nerve center" is somewhat less than state-of-the-art. However, its graphics card is an nVidia FX5200 with 128 MB memory for solid 3-D gaming performance. Furthermore, the unit features a variety of high-end outputs designed to maximize the quality of your sound and video. With S-Video, VGA and DVI outs, you're assured of having the best connection for whatever monitor or television you're watching. And with four high-speed USB 2.0 ports, three IEEE1394 FireWire connections, a digital SPDIF optical audio out and S-Video and composite A/V ins, you'll have the ideal interfaces for virtually anything.

The FMC-901 features a fast 7200 RPM 80 GB hard drive for smooth television broadcast recording, a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs and watch the latest DVD movies, and an integrated TV tuner. Communication options include a built-in 56K dial-up modem and 10/100 Ethernet for high-speed networking and Internet access. DVD writing is not supported.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one-month free access to the Napster music download site.

Gateway's new Media Center desktop computers are as unique as they are convenient and functional. Equipped with a big, wide LCD screen just perfect for multimedia buffs, each Media Center PC also features such welcome amenities as Intel Hyper-Threading processing, numerous high-end audio/video/data connections, and a visually distinctive, fully portable all-in-one tower-less design. This model, the Gateway 610X, is the midlevel member of the Media Center series, and as such offers a good balance between cost and power and far superior 3-D graphics capability than the base model Gateway 610S.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610X features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has added a solid allotment of memory -- 512 MB DDR SDRAM -- and a top-level graphics card in the ATI Radeon 9200 AGP with 128 MB dedicated (not shared) video memory. Even serious gamers and 3-D artists should feel at home with this system.

To help you manage your data, the Gateway 610X features a potent 7200 RPM 120 GB hard disk, a DVD/CD-RW optical drive through which you can burn and record audio CDs and play the latest Hollywood DVD blockbusters, and a handy 7-in-1 card media card reader for reading memory cards from high-tech gadgets such as digital cameras, PDAs and the like. In its stock form, the system does not support DVD burning.

To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, the system features a total of five high-speed USB 2.0 ports (including one mounted on the front) and an IEEE 1394 FireWire connector. Gateway has also enclosed a 5.1 line-out jack for five-speaker surround sound, a high-quality S/PDIF digital audio output, a composite A/V in, S-Video ins and outs, and an Intel 10/100 Ethernet adapter for fast network and Internet access.

The system's unique design offers several distinct advantages, not the least of which is a noticeable lack of external wiring. In fact, its large 17-inch widescreen display screen sports no wires at all, sitting instead atop a stylish integrated pedestal. Gateway has also included a wireless optical mouse, wireless keyboard, convenient wireless remote control, and built-in stereo speakers with subwoofer. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center 2004 operating system, which offers such perks as integrated widescreen monitor support, an FM tuner, and one-month free access to the Napster music download site.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Thing Ever
This machine will change your life. No more rushing home to watch a show, picking up five remotes trying to figure out which ones which, shssing your spouse until the important part of the show passes, switching CDs in your player, hooking the video camera up to the VCR to watch it, having a stack of stereo components, pulling out photo albums, etc. I could go on and on. This new design is extraordinary. My wife is nuts for this for it's simplicity. Stop reading this and buy one immediately.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything most people need
The sleek look and ease of use of the Gateway FMC-901 make it a great choice if you want the features of a Media Center Edition PC but don't want a clunky PC in the family room.
I couldn't see paying the extra price tag on the 901X just to get the Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card and the DVD burner. So if playing games and recording to DVD media isn't important, the lower cost unit may be suitable for most needs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Numbers Don't Tell the Story
Most people who buy a pc do so for predictable uses: wordprocessing, games, internet, and off the shelf software. Even for those who deem themselves power users often find that one pc is pretty much like the other. The tiebreaker in the decision to buy is often a function of price and aesthetic appeal. The GATEWAY 700X desktop is a harmonious blend of the very best qualities that one could seek in a computer. I have a Master's in Computer Technology so I already knew its potential before I bought it, but when I had a chance to put it through it paces over an extended period of time, I was enormously impressed. First the obvious: it did whatever I asked it to in quick time. Whenever a potential buyer checks out computers, he most often looks at the CPU speed as a barometer of how fast the CPU works. This GATEWAY 700X boasts a 2.533 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, but it is not for that which invests it with lightning. Of equal importance to the CPU numbers is the less recognized internal bus speed. A modest bus number is 133. The GATEWAY 700X hums along at 266, a number sufficiently quick to make even jaded power users smile. When I go online, from the time I start to the time that I am ready to chat is measured in seconds. On my previous Compaq Presario, I had to wait nearly four full minutes for that. Computer salesman like to trump the size of a pc's hard disk storage. When I first bought a pc more than 10 years ago, it had 10 GB for storage, and I never came close to using it all. This GATEWAY has 80 GB, so it's nice to know that if you plan to input a database of several million items, you need not worry about exceeding your hard drive's capacity. The 18 inch LCD flat-panel monitor presents both text and visuals with crystal clarity--no eyestrain here! The speakers are far more sensitive to nuances in sound than you might be used to. The CD/DVD combo works quite well. The numbers bandied about for such devices (48x/40x/12x for the CD and 16x for the DVD) simply mean that what you see on the screen is about a clear as you can get. Not many users care about such arcane concepts as expansion slots. I'll be willing to bet that most do not even know what an expansion slot is, but for those readers of this review who do, rest assured that this pc can be bulked up to rival Colossus in THE FORBIN PROJECT. Further, for those with digital video on the mind, the GATEWAY 700X is a sterling, reliable performer. Finally, the GATEWAY 700X even looks good. Its ergonomic appeal is not unlike the feeling that you might have felt the first time you slipped behind the wheel of your first Corvette. What all the numbers in the salesman's brochures boil down to is this: you can probably find any number of computers that are comparable, but only a few can often first rate performance and reliability at a price that won't bust your wallet. The GATEWAY 700X is just such a computer. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The BasicsTaking advantage of several recent technological innovations yet priced in the same ballpark as many desktops that do not, Gateway's 505GR Desktop PC is a powerful yet comparatively affordable computing centerpiece ideal for virtually any office, personal or leisure environment. Businesspeople will appreciate the unit's powerful Pentium 4 processor and huge hard drive, multimedia buffs will love the comprehensive connectivity and advanced DVD recording facilities, and gamers should get along quite well with the system's adequate 3D graphics performance. Though you can certainly spend more for a desktop computer, the Gateway 505GR delivers most everything a demanding user needs at a reasonable price point.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The Gateway 505GR features one of today's fastest CPUs, an Intel Pentium 4 530. New for 2004, this is an upgraded version (nicknamed "Prescott") of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at a beefy 3.0 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this is a strong CPU that's ready for any situation.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. For the Gateway 505GR, Gateway has installed a whopping 1024 MB (1 GB) of 400 DDR memory, configured in a dual channel setup for even faster response. This is a ton of memory even for a high-end machine, and its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is more than enough for any multitasking situation or complex application. Moreover, the system's mainboard is constructed to support RAM upgrades to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that's integrated on the mainboard and "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures.

The Gateway 505GR features a new style of video controller -- a sort of hybrid between high-end standalone "dedicated memory" cards and less impressive integrated "shared memory" controllers. It's called the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900, a module that is indeed integrated on the motherboard but features more refined components than traditional integrated controllers. Indeed, though it shares the computer's main memory, it shares so much of it (up to 224 MB) that it's quite capable of strong 3D performance if the computer in question has enough main memory to go around. Fortunately, the Gateway 505GR has oodles of memory. Serious gamers and 3D graphic animators will prefer a standalone video card for its extra sophistication (superior shading and antialiasing), but most will find this controller adequately displays even high-end 3D motion.

Display:
Gateway has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Gateway 505GR produces stereo and surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset with support for six distinct audio channels and one subwoofer. Gateway has also enclosed a pair of amplified desktop speakers, though serious audiophiles may want to upgrade to a three-piece subwoofer-enhanced set or a surround sound configuration.

Hard Drive
At 200 GB, the unit's internal hard drive is spacious enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Furthermore, this particular hard drive is exceptionally quick – sporting a fast 7200-RPM speed, an 8 MB buffer, and a futuristic Serial ATA connection. These are all comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and performance of the system.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world.

This system features two optical drives -- a CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a DVD +/- RW Double Layer Multi-Format drive through which you can not only do everything above but also take advantage of new double layer DVDs (twice the capacity of traditional DVDs). Moreover, with two optical drives you can make extremely fast CD copies.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports, you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Gateway has also included a trio of IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (often used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a versatile 8-in-1 card reader for reading memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Mbps Ethernet LAN interface for high-speed access to networks and the Internet, and a 56K data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections

Operating System and Software
The Gateway 505GR features a comprehensive software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Gateway will also pre-install Microsoft's Money 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity package, Microsoft's Picture It Premium photo and graphic editing suite, and a variety of high-end multimedia utilities such as the superb Nero 6 Suite CD and DVD burning package.

Control
The system includes a Gateway Premium Multimedia Keyboard and a two-button mouse with scroll wheel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get what you pay for
I have owned this lappy for about a month now. One word -- BEYOND EXPECTATION. Keep in mind that my old desktop is only a IntelCelron 400mhz and old lappy is only a iBook G3 450mhz.

I have been shopping around for a good looking lappy that can actually perform with excellent battery life. This is THE ONE. After looking at G4 Powerbook for a while, I decided to safe ~$700 to upgrade this M505XL, old desktop, old lappy and loaded of accessories for my new toy. Here is MHO review.

What's hot!!

1. Solid built quality.
2. Looks hot (looks more expensive than it actually is worth. It is the clostest thing a PC to a Power G4.
3. Over 4.5 hrs battery life w/~3.5 hrs for DVD. If you have a high capacity battery this could go up by about 0.5-1hr. I got mixed up with a regular 8 cells ion battery.
4. Great sound system for a lappy. Beat anything out there with this price range. Sub really adds good dept.
5. Centrino 1.5Ghz is plenty fast for my average graphic editing, office processing programs, and directx 9.0b gaming.
6. Full function dedicated AV control panel. Although it is not that big of a deal, but its functionality is very handy when watching DVD and listening audio.
7. Full size keybord w/ full functionality. And pretty impressive touchpad.
8. Good graphic and 15.4" (if you are into widescreen). Widescreen does not make anything look fat by stretching it when you bolw window into a full screen. Everything get adjusted accordingly when browsing the internet, etc.
9. Impressively stable OS unlike I've ever experienced with any PC. I knew this well comparing my old Win98 to MacOS9 and 10 and this WinXP pro.
10. Slightly above storage capacity (60GB) and standard memory, which is still very high for a lappy (512MB).
11. Quite and impressively cool system with death silent HDD noise (Thanks for Fujitsu great HDD technology). I was in shock when I first ran my applications. My old G3 iBook cen get relatively noisy and hot on my lap.
12. Above average customer service. Used to be great customer service. See below why.

What's not!!
1. Gateway has been notorious in sending M505XL with incorrect HDD spec. Origianlly I got Fujitsu 60GB 4200rpm w/2mbcache. It is supposed to be Toshiba 60GB 5400rpm w/8mbcache. I never got the right one from Gateway after a couple of weeks debating with Gateway. Well, I bought this system from elsewhere and the quote from the supplier is only mentioned about 60GB (no speed or buffer size). Bad luck for me because Gateway holds no responsibility for this even though there is sufficient information to link a real HDD spec for M505XL model from Gateway webpage. Gateway has been discontinued this model from their own web to avoid this problem. Be ware when you are trying to buy this lappy from any other sources. Make sure that you get a written HDD spec quote.
Why I am ranting so much about this?? Well, now that I bought my own a correct HDD spec (Fujitsu 60GB 5400rpm w/8mbcache -- in love with death silent HDD technology), I am feeling like having a brand new computer. Most of my regularly used applications load pretty much instantly. I can have two programs running while watching DVD w/o a hiccup. I could not do this with the old HDD. And, even Office outlook 2003 works so slow with my old HDD. Well, it is unaccepatably slow for this price range of a system. SO LOOK BACK AGAIN AT MY REVIEW TITLE. On top of my HDD and Battery mixed up. They got my serial in the system wrong. I was trying to register, and after entering my SN it brought up a Plasma TV??? Well, Gateway promise to fix it in 2-4 weeks. It is still not after 3 weeks. I wonder whether I will be able to extend my warrenty!!
2. No upgrade option. Well, Wistron is actually manufacturing this M505 series. Basically this is a mass production model from Gateway.
3. Regardless of full size keyboard and decent feel, it is not very solid. I can feel that one of these keyboards will not last longer than 2 years. I own G3 iBook for almost 3.5 years now and not a single complaint.
4. Can only upgrade HDD up to 60GB and memory to 1024MB. High end availability are 80GB and 2048MB of Ram (This means that Gateway have Winstron put it a sub standard motherboard). Well, 100GB HDD is coming out very soon too.

I would have given 4.5, but ended up in 5 because I still like it so much after all above-mentioned troubles I could have easily returned it for a full refund after first week. Now that I upgraded the HDD to a correct spec and increased memory from 512 to 768 (will try to max out to 1024 by next month), this lappy can really perform. Noted that I tried to add more memory with the old HDD but performace was not improved enough to make me feel like a $1700-1800 lappy. By the way, I can't notice any different in battery life regardless of a new higher spec HDD. It is probably less by less than 5 min or so.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a new PC based lappy with great battery life, solid OS, good graphic, well built, medium size weight (it is pretty light to carrying around), just grab one but don't forget about the HDD and battery. (...) ... Read more

The 18" LCD Flat Panel Display provides you the convenient option of using either interface.Space is always at a premium. Whether it's on a desktop, in your study, or in a cubicle, the 18" LCD Flat Panel Display takes up very little space. Amazon.com Product Description

Compact and battery efficient yet more powerful and versatile than many larger, bulkier portable computers, the Gateway M505X Notebook is a smart choice for those who put equal emphasis on performance and portability.

Not surprisingly, the unit features Intel's new Centrino technology. Built upon a triad of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- Centrino-equipped notebooks deliver more power and more perks than their comparatively diminutive size and rated processor speed would otherwise indicate. In the case of the Gateway M505X, that processor is a 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium M, which works hand-in-hand with the system's 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory and impressively punchy ATI Radeon 9600 graphics controller (64 MB dedicated video memory) to efficiently handle all but the most complex 2-D and 3-D business and leisure notebook applications.

Measuring just 14 by 10 by 1.4 inches and weighing a mere 6.7 pounds with optical drive and battery installed, the Gateway M505X is nevertheless crammed with impressive mobile features. Though the unit's 40 GB hard disk is only of average size, its optical drive permits CD playing and burning and DVD playing. Its display offers a surprisingly generous 15.4 widescreen inches of viewing area at crystal clear 1280 by 800 resolutions, and its on-board stereo speaker system features a miniature subwoofer for added audio depth.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works Suite 7.0 and a 90-day trial with Norton AntiVirus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one SUPER computer!!
Greetings - I ordered this laptop from Amazon in May - and it was forwarded to me all the way to FOB Dagger, Iraq (Amazon will not send lots of technology products overseas so I had to have it forwarded). First of all, my full-time job is computer support so I have quite a bit of laptop/notebook experience. This M505x is a super, super machine. Build quality is great - no 'flexy' case, cheap plastic (think "D*ll") or crooked lines here and there - its top-notch in this respect. It is made in the Phillipines vice mainland China by the way. The display is bright, responsive and not grainy (and the case lid appears to be aluminum). No dead pixels on mine by the way, quite a feat considering how far it traveled!! One of the greatest features of this laptop is the ATI Radeon 9600 (64mb DDR) graphics. It absolutely rocks with the games I've played. Raven Shield looks great - and the Far Cry demo is awsome. Oh, also by the way, in view of all of this praise, you might think this is either a vaporware review - or that I'm somehow connected to Gateway. I really ordered and possess the system and I'm not in any way connected with Gateway. One little downside is that it came with a 4200-rpm hdd - but I had pre-ordered a spare Hitachi 40-gb 5400-rpm drive (not from Gateway or Amazon). Here's another M505x advantage - Gateway didn't take the cheap way out with a garbage-software-infested restore CD - the "restore" CD appears to be a relabeled XP Home CD! No problems with the restore to the new hdd - and the software/apps CD gives you the option to pick and choose what to install. All of the buttons/SD card slot/graphics worked perfectly after the restore. I cannot say enough good things about the M505x - I am thrilled with mine!! One last comment - I am sending this review from an Army morale computer in an internet cafe. I had never cared much for Gateways until I arrived here at FOB Dagger. The 20 Gateways in this Cafe take an enormous beating from GI's, heat, dust, viruses - you name it. Most of them have a few bad pixels now - but they are running very well considering the use and abuse they get. The only thing they all need is 256mb of ram instead of the measly 128mb that they each have. Ok - last but not least - there has to be some negatives: Gateway uses cheap cardboard for shock protection in their boxes - although my system was not damaged. And, to be honest, some users have reported dark areas in their displays (not mine, though) - as reported on notebookforums.com. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
Developed primarily for those who prioritize futuristic conveniences and easy portability over mind-numbing power, the Gateway 4520GZ Notebook PC is ideal for businesspeople, personal users and students who are always on the go. Similar in most respects to the pricier Gateway 4525GZ but with a smaller hard drive and no DVD recording capabilities, the Gateway 4520GZ features such perks as wireless connectivity, battery-efficient Intel Centrino technology, DVD playing and a 4-in-1 memory card reader. Diehard gamers and serious 3D artists and designers will want to look for a notebook with superior 3D graphics capabilities, but highly mobile users should find the Gateway 4520GZ delivers enough power and most of the amenities they’re likely to need.

The Gateway 4520GZ is equipped with an Intel Pentium M 705 processor running at 1.5 GHz.

The Gateway 4520GZ incorporates 512 MB of RAM of PC2700 DDR RAM, an average allotment and speed for midlevel notebooks.

This is an entry-level video controller, not equipped with "dedicated" memory and appropriating just 32 MB of the system’s main memory.

The Gateway 4520GZ features a midsize TFT XGA 15-inch non-widescreen display.

Hard Disk:
A sub-compact notebook with a truly large hard drive is not commonplace, yet the Gateway 4520GZ houses a generous 60 GB of internal storage space. If you need to install and operate a broad range of applications and also keep a small library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files, the unit is up to the job.

And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable DVD discs and archive huge volumes of files (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Most drives allow you to do a combination of these tasks. This system features a CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can do all of the above except burn DVDs.

The Gateway 4520GZ offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11g wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot.

Tipping the scales at just 5.5 lbs and measuring a mere 12.9 by 10.5 by 1.08 inches, the Gateway 4520GZ is small enough to fit inside a briefcase or large purse and not so heavy that it’s prohibitively cumbersome on long journeys.

Power:
The unit is equipped with an 6-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Gateway's new Media Center desktop computers are as unique as they are convenient and functional. Equipped with a big, wide LCD screen just perfect for multimedia buffs, each Media Center PC also features such welcome amenities as Intel Hyper-Threading processing, numerous high-end audio/video/data connections, and a visually distinctive, fully portable all-in-one tower-less design. This model, the Gateway 610S, is the most economical member of the Media Center series, and as such offers reduced power and capability than its two higher-priced compatriots.

Outfitted with a reasonably fast 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thereby boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking), the Gateway 610S features enough raw power for most any standard home, home office or business environment. Gateway has elected to keep the main memory to a minimum with this machine (just 256 MB DDR SDRAM), thus compelling those who push the unit with the latest and greatest software to upgrade to 512 or 1024 MB.
