The Basics

• Hard Drive: The 40 GB EIDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.

If you like your laptop keyboard, you'll like this product
I bought this keyboard when I was trying to replace my MS Natural Elite keyboard with something that included a pointing device. I liked this keyboard enough that I didn't return it, but I'm back using my Microsoft Natural Elite because I've gotten so used to the keyboard layout.

Unlike some other combination keyboard/pointing devices, this one works very well. They keyboard feel is quite good, with a very short, sharp throw on each key, and a well positioned and easy to use pointing device. The only problem with this keyboard is that it is laid out like a laptop keyboard, which means that some keys are too small and oddly located.

Why buy 1GB?
Well, I just reviewed the 4GB version of this item, and was surprised to discover that the 1GB sells for more than $200. So, here's the shortcut info on getting the 4GB version of this drive for the same price:

Step 1: Browse for the Creative Labs Nomad MuVo 4 GB MP3 Player on Amazon.
Step 2: Buy the player for $200.
Step 3: Unscrew the back of the player.
Step 4: Take out the 4GB Hitachi microdrive and throw away the player.
Step 5: Pop the microdrive in your cam, format it and voila!

There you have it, 4GB for only $200, instead of the listed $480!

The Microdrive wins my heart
This little guy will hold about 400 high quality pictures taken with my Canon EOS 10D. Thanks to Windows XP and the card adapter, I just plug it right into my Toshiba Satellite laptop and, cha ching! I have instant access to all the photos. There was no need to muck with finding and downloading drivers. It has enough storage capacity for a weekend trip's worth of photos. And the price is considerably lower than the current Compact Flash type II cards of similar capacity.

Reliable and fast
The 1GB Microdrive has worked well in a Toshiba e755 Pocket PC. It mounts as a folder, just like with flash memory in Pocket PCs. It's fast, silent and reliable, although does draw more power than normal CF cards. The price is right. If you have more to spend, wait for the upcoming 4GB (later this year) and 7GB (and also a rumored 10GB version) early 2004. The new ones will be made by Hitachi.

good storage
I use the 1GB microdrive for my Toshiba e755 to store/open/playback movies, captured digital photos, mp3's, and MS Office documents on the go. It seems to be reliable so far, since my main concern was internally moving parts causing a reliability concern. Nevertheless, it performs well, and it costs less per megabyte, for now, to store items on it. I am eagerly expecting the upcoming Hitachi 4GB microdrive.

Am I lucky or what?
Used this card for over a year,alternating w/cf card...1000's of RAW and hi-rez
jpegs, carried in a pack or a pocket,1oo to -20 degrees, still works like the
energizer bunny. In camera formatted after every download. Those with problems on new cards should get a FREE replacement and not a repaired card,

NEC introduced in June of 2004 their first, ultra compact double layer burner, with the aim to bring high quality, fast DVD burning to laptop users, without the need for external drive enclosures. It is extremenly light weight, adding only 0.19kg to your laptop. Buy a Logitech
This mouse is nice and comfortable, the scroll wheel is smooth and thats about all that is good. The mouse falls asleep like the other reviewers said and it is extremely annoying to try to get it to wake up every five seconds. I just bought a Wireless Logitech mouse for my laptop and have tried my friends Logitech mouse and they are both smooth and dont fall asleep. You move it and they move right away. With this IBM you have to click and click and wait then it decides to wake up. Horrible.

Amen to that One Fatal Flaw
As has been discussed in other reviews, that "fall asleep" attribute is extremely annoying. Sometimes you feel like you need to slam it against the wall to wake the blasted thing back up. I returned mine for a refund.

I suppose it's a "feature" to preserve battery life. I think I can afford to buy a few more batteries, thank you. If the manufacturers really want this "feature," then they should have provided a mechanism that allows the user to configure it. E.g., "go to sleep" after 15 minutes of inactivity instead of 2.

I should add that the software package that comes with it has problems as well. In particular, there's a "sonar" feature that locates the mouse pointer for you when you press the "Ctrl" key. Unfortunately, this feature "breaks" too easily, especially if you try it after the mouse has "gone to sleep." Then it won't work again until after a reboot. (My system is Win98 1st Edition; obviously your mileage may vary on other versions of Windows.)

OK, except for one HUGE flaw
At a first glance, this is a good mouse just because it's wireless and optical. It's comfortable, and the scroll wheel is just smooth enough. Unfortunately, it has one big problem which forced me to return the mouse and exchange it for the far super Logitech MX700 mouse. The problem is this: the mouse falls asleep if you leave it alone for a minute or so, and then you have to move it quite a bit before it wakes up. So, whenever you want to move the mouse after leaving it alone for a bit, it just doesn't respond for several seconds. This is incredibly annoying. So I wouldn't recommend this one.

Does Not Support Accelleration!
I installed an IBM Optical Wireless Mouse on my work pc. It seemed to work just fine until I noticed that it kept losing the Medium acceleration setting. Every few minutes the mouse started to move very slowly. To get it across the screen I had to pick it up and stroke it across a portion of my desk several times. Every time this happened I went into the mouse setup dialog and found that the acceleration had changed from Medium to None. If I re-selected Medium the mouse worked normally until the next incident. This interval of good acceleration varied from several minutes to over an hour.

When I called the Mouse's Tech Support the Tech said "Oh, that mouse doesn't support acceleration because it runs at such a high frequency".

How do you like that double-talk to excuse a piece of junk?!

I made the mistake of buying 2 of these lousy mice. The other one I installed on my home pc and the acceleration worked fine. This mouse was installed in a PS/2 port under Windows 2000. This machine runs 2 operating systems. When I tried to install the mouse's driver under Windows 98 the install routine abended. Once this happened Win98 stopped recognizing the mouse. I tried to uninstall the driver but Win98 did not seem to know anything about the driver. I switched to a plain wired un-optical PS/2 mouse and Win98 did not recognize that mouse either. When I booted Win2K it locked up on the sign-on screen and would not recognize the keyboard or the mouse. When I forced Win2K into Safe mode it hung up the same way. I finally discovered that the only way to get Win2K to function was to unplug the mouse. At this point I went to RadioShack and bought a corded USB mouse and both Win2K and Win98 have been working ever since.

The online guide said product would ship in 24-hours but after I entered the order on Wednesday, 6-18-03, the shipping information showed 48-hours as in Friday, 6-20-03. Nice Hidden Option
Like most normal DVD-ROM's this drive does a nice job of playing DVDs at 16x, nothing special there, good seek times, and IBM's high standard for quality projects. However, one other thing this drive does well is read DVD-RAMs at 3x, an uncommon characteristic for many drives. I searched high and low for a DVD-RAM drive with a high read rate, and in some cases any drive that would read DVD-RAM. This was one of the few that I found that was above 1x, most are 1x or 2x and cost an arm and a leg, mainly due to the fact that they are recorders as well.
Now, most people don't care about reading DVD-RAM, but I found that it was extremely important if I wanted to transfer information off my Panasonic DVR-HS2, then transfer it to my computer for futher editing and burning to my multiplatform 4X drive.
The problem is the Panasonic DVR-HS2 will only record DVDs onto -R at 1x, and RAM at 3x. This means that if you have 20 hours of VHS to back up onto your DVR-HS2 harddrive, it will take you another 20 hours to burn it and a ton of DVD-R. But if you use the DVD-RAM option you can burn all of the info off in a third of the time, and you only need to use 1, that you can write over 1,000 of times. Once you get the info on the DVD-RAM then you can let the IBM drive read it into your computer, super fast, and transfer the information about anyway you would like.
The DVD-RAM option is probably not big to a lot of people, but for those who do possess a Panasonic DVR, or any other stand-alone DVR,it is a very wise option to have for your PC. ... Read more
