Never had problems
I have had this monitor since 2000 and have never had a single problem with it. No humming sounds or smoke coming out and I have changed the resolution quite a few times. I highly recommend this item.

Another Great Compaq Product
This monitor is everything I expected from a Compaq product. Excellent picture quality and sound. I have never found another manufacturer who can match Compaq for sound quality. Another nice feature of Compaq monitors are the microphones that are built into the monitor, so there is no need to buy a desk-cluttering external. The microphone also works great with voice recognition software. This monitor replaced a Compaq Presario 1410 monitor that I have used for the last six years (still has better sound and picture than most new monitors, just figured it was time to update!).

Possible Fire Hazard
I had this monitor and it started to make a loud noise one night and I could smell a strong odor of copper wire burning eminating from it. The screen was black on the sides and white down the middle. When I hit the mouse to clear the screen and it started to make a shrill sound and I just pulled the plug. I had this for less than a year. If your kids have this in their room please take care. I'm the only one that used this.

Don't bother getting this
We had purchased this monitor brandnew at our PX. It seemed to look nice and I thought it would be nice to have a smaller more spacesaving monitor. Well little did I know that a common problem of 15 inch monitors or maybe just this one is, that it has difficulty displaying anything higher then 640x480. As soon as we changed it to 800x600 it would start humming and it had this high pitch noise. Needless to say that is quite useless for internet surfing and any software. Great monitor!
I paid ... when I bought this monitor last year. But I've been using it for over a year now and it's wonderful. With anti-glare screen, I get excellent pictures everytime. The images are sharp and clear, and with Compaq's Coloreal technology you can enjoy true-to-life images on its 16.0 VIA. For a 2-piece stereo speaker system, the JBL Platinum is excellent, too. You can connect headphones directly to the speakers. The Digital Audio Player port lets you use the speakers as output for your mp3 player without switching on the computer. This is definitely one of the best flat screen monitor around. If you don't want this, get a flat panel display.

Good Monitor
Purchased this monitor as part of a bundle with an Emachines system @ Circuit City. The monitor has a great picture and comes with JBL Platinum Speakers and built in microphone. While I'm not a fan of built in mic's this one works OK. The speakers are powered and need to be manually turned on and off via the volume control. They can be hung on the side of the monitor or they also can be put on the desktop with supplied stands. They sound pretty good but sound distorted at higher levels. They are a huge step up from the supplied e-machines speakers that came with the CPU though. Controls are easy to use and all cables and such are provided. ...

Good monitor for everyday, normal use.
I got this monitor with a Compaq computer that I bought and it hasn't given me any problems since I got it. It's a flat screen with 2 small slits on both sides to slide the speakers in if you want them on the sides of the monitor. If you don't have the speakers or if you don't want to connect them to the monitor directly, that is no problem because the slits are barely visible and do not stick out. The monitor doesn't take much room and fits snugly on my desk. I don't ever have to turn it off because like most monitors, it automatically goes on standby when the computer is off or in sleep mode and it turns back on when the computer turns back on. An above average monitor
I have found this to be a very good monitor. I replaced a Sony 17" with this Compaq and find that it displays a good crisp picture across the entire viewing area. Corners are in focus and there are ample adjustments on the front of the CRT. I have made adjustments that stay the course. My display has not changed since I made the original setup. I run it at 1024X768, vertical at 85Hz and Horizontal at 68.6k. I don't use the speakers because I have my own sound system. It is not the top of the line but close to it. Four (4) stars.

Top Quality... Hefty Price
This compaq monitor is great. It does all that the big names do, big time resolution, great looking box, awsome color even at really high resolutions. The CRT technology has impressed me a lot considering its price comparison to the Flat Panel monitors out today.

I have a laptop with the TFT technology (as they all do) and i'll say that this monitor (the CRT type) is just as good. This seems a lot easier on your eyes because it seems more like a computer monitor then a TV type monitor. The TFT's seem so bright and pure that its like looking at a tv... (hence if you're too close it sort-of defeats the purpose).

I've used both types, and for the price i'd say that you should go for this technology. Also, I have the same type of monitor at home (but the Sony Trinitron Brand) and they are both identical in every way. Crispness is exactly the same.

The reason i'm only giving it 3 stars is because the price is quite hefty. I bought my Sony Trinitron for 520 almost 2 years ago. This compaq model is priced at about 500. You should expect Compaq's prices to be much lower (or Sony's to be much higher because of the name). I actually purchased a Compaq almost Identical in every way from this model (mine is the Compaq I910 Flat Screen 19" CRT Multimedia Monitor) and i paid only 219.00 for it online.

I would search far and wide to get the 200 dollar one instead of this one or instead of the Sony Trinitron. Like i said, i have both Sony, and Compaq models (one at work, and one at home) and they're performances are identical. But i paid 500 for sony, and 219 for compq.

Now remember that it says "Flat Screen" not "Flat Panel". The technologies are very different, although not 100% apparent, and the only technological difference (as seen by the human eye) is that one has a big box behind the screen, and the other is thin) Both are flat, and both are very good to look at. One just costs a lot more.

The CRT models are based still on tubes but different types of tubes. This type is far more advanced than the old types, and you'll notice a line about 2-1/2 inches from the top and bottom of the screen. This is normal. This is a wire going across the screen and is part of the technology. This is probably another slight difference that you won't see in the TFT.

If you can get the 219 dollar version (I910) go for it. Its a great buy. Same quality without the hefty price tag. ... Read more

Impressive Product
Super-high resolution, surround-sound speaker quality! Fun, easy-to-use screen display controls. No-frills installation.

The JBL Platinum speakers deliver syphonic music as if you're in the orchestra hall. And the built-in microphones make PC-phone and PC-PC live voice chat communications a simple reality.

Great Monitor, Great Value
Besides its cool looks, the Compaq MV740 offers great graphics and sound. The JBL speakers are crisp and they are easily adjusted. Picture quality is excellent; I have a DVD player and movies look as good as they do on a TV screen. The 17" screen (15.9: VIA) is perfect for most users; if you need a bigger screen, you're probably a graphic artist (and then you'd have a Mac anyway!). I have the video cam attachment, which is a blast. You can send video messages with sound and still pictures as e-mail attachments. The software for the cam is easy to load and easy to figure out. You'll be sending mini movies the day you plug it in. All in all, a great mid-level monitor that will meet the needs of most home users. ... Read more

Good for its time, but now it depends...
As of April 2004, the monitor is great for a thrifty budget. However, it is bulky and heavy. Be ready to set aside at least $300 for better manageability and picture.

At least it had a lint free cloth...
I had been using Fellowes WriteRight screen protectors for my iPAQ 3850, and I have gone back to using them after my experience with the Belkin protectors. I had switched to Belkin as they sounded like they might be gentler on my screen. However, I made several attempts to apply the Belkin protectors, but could not get them applied cleanly no matter how slowly and thoroughly I rubbed them on. Furthermore, they seemed just a shade narrower than the Fellowes protectors, which can lead to slight catches of the stylus as it passes over the far edges of the screen. They did come with a lint free cloth to clean the screen (something not provided by the Fellowes protectors), and that was nice, but that is really all they have to offer.

Bleh AWFUL
Bleh, these are AWFUL.

I ordered a pack and a pack of the HP screen protectors.

The Belkin's use a non permanent adhesive that no matter how much you smooth it, give your screen a gnarly look. While this holds well, it looks terrible.

The HP protectors have NO adhesive but are held in by tension on the edges. These produce no screen artifacts while looking great.

Clean, clear protection!
I'm telling you that these guys are just the right size. They fit the screen perfectly. They do not appear dark, but seem to reduce glare on the touch screen. They absorb the scratches and smudges that would normally scare the PDA screen. Included are instructions that are clear and easy to follow. I found using soft screen cleaning pad and the smoothie card helpful in applying the overlay properly. These overlays are a must buy if you care to preserve your Ipaq screen. ... Read more
