Great monitor but not worth 5 stars
This is the top of the line as far as LCD's go, but you are still paying something extra for the "Sony" name as with all sony products.For one thing, even though it has an EXCEPTIONAL response time in games(for an LCD) thier are a few image rips in animation when moving or looking up/down in a FPS or like game.Cut scenes in Knights of the OLd Repub II aren't bad even on 'auto' light but the game has a few moments when walking that can get on your nerves such as turns skipping a few frames and it is not tollerable on the regular connector.DVI is marginally better at handling this because of increased frequency but you can only go to 60 hz refresh(though on LCD"s it is not noticeable as on CRTs but still hurts the eyes over time.)By the way no other LCD COMES WITH a DVI cable that I know of except this one and that is the main reason to buy it.Sony patents everything though so you need to reorder a SONY DVI cable(not an off brand) if this one goes out or your warrenty is void.No DVI cables of any kind can be ordered on this site at this time.They are almost impossible to find in most local stores and some sales people don't even know what you are talking about.I would highly recommend this monitor for its DVI cable and also for the performance to the avid gamer despite the video flaws when running or turning because it is hardly noticeable on DVI mode.The 60hz and lack of a solid driver is negotiable, but I just put mine in the far back of my corner hutch so it won't hurt my eyes.19"(diagonal) is big enough to see at a distance of four feet or more.Insidently, it is actually 19" unlike the CRT equivalent which is only 18".You get what you pay for and with this you get alot, but you also get the Sony logo and a lousy refresh rate, otherwise a top notch product for internet, office or even games of any kind.12 ms respones also makes it good for CAD.

Very Nice Display
I couldn't be happier with this monitor.The color and contrast are very good, the best I've seen so far.The speed seems to be very fast, no blurs.
The first one I ordered from Amazon had one green pixel stuck on, very irritating on the eyes.I contacted Amazon and they arranged a home pick-up, shipped the second one overnight and did not charge anything for the shipping costs. This monitor has no bad pixels.I love it! and Amazon too!

Incredible!
You will be spoiled forever once you see this LCD monitor in person.If you use the computer a lot like I do - a clear, sharp display is an amazing thing - which I've never had until now that I own this LCD display.

After looking and comparing many monitors I purchased this one even though it was slightly more in cost than others.The reason I purchased this LCD display was because after comparing apples to apples with the display images produced by all monitors I was looking at - this one stood out very quickly.

This monitor has a technology called XBrite as well as a glassy looking screen which makes you think at first you will see a glare - but it's just the opposite.Not only do you not see a glare but it totally makes the words and images pop out of the display.

The clarity and sharpness provided by this display are just simply incredible.It is worth every extra penny you pay for it.It also has a $50 rebate right now.

Once you have a display such as this you'll never want to go back to the more traditional monitors that don't have the XBrite technology or go back to the ones that have the antiglare screens (which I can now see now after having this display that does not have the antiglare screen - that the monitors that do have the antiglare screens only take away from the clarity of the image you see on the screen!).

This LCD display I know has many technologically advanced features I can't begin to talk about as my main concern was the ease of being able to view words on the monitor but I'm sure the product review above goes into all that it has.

An outstanding multimedia solution from Sony!
My display is being put to dual use in a Windows XP / Macintosh OS X setup.It works greats in both environments. The picture is crisp and fluid at the same time, meaning that text looks sharp while pixilation is indiscernible when viewing high quality digital photos.

With the PC: The display is set at 1280 x 768 resolution and is truly excellent.

With the Mac: I use this display with my Apple iBook.Initially this caused a problem with the fact that the iBook does not output in widescreen format.I downloaded a fix to my iBook called "Screen Spanning Doctor" at http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/ibook_e.html (WARNING, do not select the "clamshell" option during initial setup as this will not allow your iBook to properly dissipate heat during use and can cause serious damage to your iBook). Now I can display my iBook in widescreen at 1280 x 768 resolution.

The truly awesome feature of this display however is that I do not have to switch any cables around.You can hook up a computer with an appropriate video card to the DVI connection port, a laptop to the standard VGA port, cable TV to the 75-ohm VHF/UHF coaxial port, standard or Super Video VCR or camcorder to the Standard/S-Video port, and your HD receiver / Satellite receiver / Progressive-Scan DVD Player to the Component video port.You can easily switch between all of them using the supplied Sony infrared remote control (RM-333). There is even Picture-in-Picture so you can watch TV while your working on the computer without over-taxing your computers processor and video card.

Sound quality is very good using the three internal speakers (2 stereo & a sub-woofer) if set to SRS WOW.

GREAT MONITOR
Purchased this monitor from amazon with free shipping and 25 dollar rebate. It was the lowest price around. Received monitor, it took about 5 minutes to set up looks great would highly recommend this monitor and use amazon for the lowest price.

Best quality
I've used other LCD monitors at my workplace, but the brightness, brilliance and clarity of the Sony's SDM-series monitors surpasses all of them. Images do not look "pixelized" like those on Samsung LCD monitors. The price is well worth it (...).

Others have complained that the base of the monitor is too large -- However I have no problem with it because it's the perfect place for my wireless mouse & keyboard receiver!

Extremely good value
I was looking for a Samsung 17 inch monitor when I spotted the Sony SDM-HS73. The picture was amazingly crisp and the colors bright compared to the NEC and Samsung monitors next to it. Reading the specs, I noticed that its pixel pitch was .264mm, and the contrast ratio was 500:1, indicating a very good quality monitor. When I brought it home, I placed it next to my old 19 inch CRT monitor to compare screen size - the SDM-HS73 was a tad bit bigger! Setup was simple - plug and play. I ran my favorite screen saver, Marine Aquarium on it and couldn't be happier. The picture looks great - sharp text, vivid colors. My husband will be buying one also.

Ended up with this monitor through pure serendipity. Went to look at either an NEC or the Sony HS72 LCDs to get a feel for them. Store where we went to look was in the midst of remodeling, and HS72 must have broken in transit. NEC looked nice, but then on a whim we asked to see the HS73 since the 72 wouldn't come on. Wow. Incredible picture - level of detail and crispness of picture were stunning; all the technical specs were excellent as well. Salesperson told us HS73 was successor to HS72, and it was 50 bucks cheaper to boot. So we bought two. :) ... Read more

My Sony SDM-HX93 is the best monitor I've ever owned. This is the third flat screen monitor my family has (I have an HP and another 17" Sony) and this is by far the most wonderful device! The colors and brightness are incredible, very clean text and great performance. Setup was very easy and intuitive. Better than expected
Just got this monitor along with my new HP m470n Media Center PC. Works great!! My previous was a Philips 17" CRT. There were no dead pixels, and the clarity is great. Very bright and clear images.

Make sure you install the drivers from the CD, and in particular, go through the display optimization steps for both Media Center as well as on the Sony CD itself. Otherwise the factory default settings may not get it right. I also found that the TV picture is clearest when it takes up one quadrant of the screen; otherwise you need to move back further.

Net/net I am very happy with the monitor.

Excellent - for what it is
I tested this monitor using its DVI-D input connected to my PNY GeForce FX5900 128MB Graphics Card's DVI-D output. The presentation was bright and clean, although my unit had one dead pixel in the lower right quadrant. It was most noticeable on a pure white background. From what I have read, this problem with one or more dead pixels is quite common with all LCD monitors, so it's truly the luck of the draw to get a screen that doesn't have at least one. However, while it may be considered "normal", it is simply unacceptable to expect people to put up with such glaring flaws when shelling out this kind of $.

This is a beautiful monitor, aesthetically speaking, and the set up was virtually plug and play on my Windows XP Pro-based system. The controls include one-touch presets for different viewing modes (gaming, pc, video). I found that it was wonderful on strictly computer-based images (i.e., gaming, where its 16ms response time meant no blurring of moving images), text (although there was some lack of clarity with smaller fonts when running it at its recommended native resolution of 1280x1024), web surfing, etc. However, the rendering of high-quality graphics and DVD movie playback is similar to all LCD monitors, i.e., flat, lacking in detail and incapable of rendering accurate color - in other words, far inferior to a high quality CRT.

In spite of the fact that most computer stores are selling (pushing, actually) almost nothing but LCD monitors, they are simply inferior to CRTs for rendering accurate color, detail in high quality graphics and DVD movie playback.

For this reason, I returned it for a refund. I will instead purchase the new 22" IBM ThinkVision C220p CRT, which is listed by IBM on their website at $589. It is the top IBM CRT (Trinitron-based). Per IBM: "...the C220p is best suited for professional graphics applications such as CAD/CAM/CAE, desktop publishing, web design, digital content creation, video editing and high-definition image manipulation..." Basically it should blow away this or any other LCD monitor for reproduction of high quality graphics and DVD movie playback - not to mention IBM's 3-year Rapid-replacement warranty. They'll ship another one to you and take the defective one and even pay the shipping! I guess you don't get to be IBM by jerking people around on defective merchandise. Try getting the same deal from Sony. Yeah, right.

Given the caveats, only you can decide if the Sony SDM-HX73 monitor will fill your needs. ... Read more
