1-0 out of 5 stars LOOKS GOOD BUT DEAD PIXELS ARE FREQUENT~!
Looks good but poor manufacturing quality. Jesus I had to return four because of dead pixels. I had like 3 the first time, 2 the second return and the 1 the next. If you buy this lcd go to the stores like bestbuys so you can return em once a dead pixel shows up. Its quite annoying. Finally I got one w/ no dead pixels but about 2 days later I got a dead pixel. My friends dell/samsung made lcd was working for like the whole year and doesnt have one dead pixel.

I think I'll go Samsung. Sony products are going down the drain. They still got the looks but jesus once samsung gets a better look say buh bye sony.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, but it has one disadvantage like all other LCDs
Pros: light-weight, space-saving, no reflection

Cons: texts look bleeding

Everything about this monitor is good except for text bleeding. I thought it had something to do with graphics and can be fixed. When I did that, no results. I asked the saleperson, he said it's normal for texts look like bleeding at low resolutions in all LCDs and it has something to do with difference of pixels that CRTs have that LCDs don't. Have to go for 15" LCD or higher resolutions to take care of this problem, but texts look small and strain on your eyes after long period of time. So, I will take it back to the store and exchange it for one of the 17" or 19" CRTs that have crystal clear texts at any resolutions better than LCDs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Balanced, and then some...
This LCD is an excellent combination of a reasonable price point ..., beautiful design, and excellent performance.

We replaced a 21" hulk of a CRT with this and, to say the least, it has redefined our workspace. My wife raves about the clarity and brightness of the picture, which she uses almost every night to edit legal documents for work. This is an excellent monitor for every day web-browsing, documents, or spreadsheets. I have made the switch from CRT to LCD and won't be going back.

Another benefit of this monitor is the faster-than-normal response time of 16ms - most monitors are in the 24ms range. I have read reviews of another LCD that has a 12ms response but it wasn't borne out in the reviewer's testing with 3d action games. Using the DVI input, I have played a few levels of 'Call of Duty' on this monitor and noted no ghosting or lagging on the response time, and I'll also add that the sound quality of the speakers at the bottom of the monitor are above-average for what I've personally heard from monitor or desk top speakers. That being said, if you use your computer almost exclusively for FPS gaming this probably isn't your solution...

The styling is very unique, with a swooping stand that is a departure from other LCD's. It does seem that there is more unused space bordering the actual screen than other monitors in this class, however. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Almost 3 Years and Still Going Strong!
I bought the E200 in December 99 and it has been a great monitor. This was my first Sony. I've previously owned NEC & Viewsonic. The flat crt screen, (new then but common now) works great with text. This monitor has great contrast, bright colors and good screen geometry. The single button menu control takes a little bit to get used to, but once you get a feel for it, the menus are easy to navigate. The best thing in my experience with this monitor is the reliability factor. It has been absolutely rock solid. The PC I use basically runs 24/7 and the monitor is probably in powered up/in use for 8-9 hrs avg. per day. If this monitor is still available at a fair price, I would highly recommend picking one up if your in the market for a 17" Flat CRT. However, I have heard that the E210 is the exact same monitor with a 3-yr factory warranty vs. 1-yr with the E200. So if the price difference is negligable, I would go with the E210. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Display, Both On and Off
I've almost never written a review, so in other words, I'm excited about this monitor. I admit I was drawn first by the styling, but am still delighted with the gorgeous picture quality, whenever I use the HS93. I'm very fussy, a heavy graphics/multimedia user, and am really glad I found this one.

From what I'd read, dead pixels are pretty common in LCDs, especially as they get bigger, so maybe some of us are lucky there (I almost expected some). Apparently it's not considered a big deal, but of course once you spot it, you'll never not see it again kinda thing. It's also a good idea to adjust brightness down, and your icons and font sizes up, because they get so small at this res. I'm impressed with how easy/intuitive it is to do everything too. Some people might want to try contrast (lowering, probably) and use the different options available *fun, after a CRT!*

And the viewability angle is excellent (as far as I know that's the only reason to care about flatness). I need a new tv soon, maybe it's time to try a Sony...

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled by the other reviewers...
Check it out, Sony is not the only company that has the 8 dead pixels return policy. Most if not all manufactures have this policy. The other individuals that complained about dead pixels on there monitors got unlucky. This is the risk you take with ANY LCD monitor, not just sony ones.

I can say that I have NO dead pixels, woohoo! If you do any research on LCD's you will see that this is an issue for all LCD's from all manufactures.

Okay so with that said let me tell you how great this monitor is. I upgraded from a 17" CRT (big and bulky) monitor to this 19" LCD. While it wasn't very cheap i'd have to say it was one of the first purchases I have made without feeling guilty afterwards, the common feeling from impulse buying.

The Sony rep knew less about the monitor than I did so he was of no help at the time. For all you gamers (like me) you will be pleased with the low refresh rate (25ms). Okay so it could be lower but it's a 19" and I hardly notice any ghosting effects. If you guys don't know what refresh rate means let me put it like this. The higher the number (ie 25, 30, 35...) the slower your monitor reacts to fast moving images on the screen. So you get what is called a "ghosting effect" where transitions on the screen seem to blur across the screen. I've seen refresh rates as low as 15ms (milli-seconds) and I bet that is the best bet for gamers. But for me playing most First preson shooters and race car games it is hardly noticeable. And i'm picky too!

The monitor is very light and comes with a very sturdy stand. I am confident in an earthquake it will stay put. The back of the monitor has a black piece of plastic that covers the cords coming out of the back giving it a sleek look. Probably the coolest thing about this monitor is the fact it doesn't heat up my bedroom like my old monitor. This puppy stays cool to the touch unlike most of the other monitors on the market. No frying eggs on this bad boy.

Finally, the software that comes with it is pretty cheasy. It lets you fine tune your monitor for optimal display but mine came without any adjustments needed like yours probably will. I have this monitor in front of a glass door with the sun coming from behind the monitor but this monitor is so bright and vivid i can clearly see every detail. This monitor matches my Microsoft Wireless desktop keyboard and mouse so that is another plus. My desk is no longer cluttered by wires and a giant monitor (my old 17").

You all shouldn't be dissapointed with this purchase. Like i said, it's the first purchase i've made and didn't feel guilty afterwards. I love watching DVD's on it because it's almost like having a T.V. Keep in mind it doesn't have built in speakers so if that's what you are looking for you wont find it here. Oh last thing, this monitor comes with a 3 year warranty. When was the last time you bought something with a 3 year warranty? I can't remember either! Installation couldn't be easier! Get this one :)

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware of buying from SONY!
I bought the HS93 model from the internet. I had several BRIGHT always on pixels from the very first day. It was centrally located, and very annoying. I tried to return the monitor to the internet vendor, but they told me to call Sony directly. Apparently this is Sony enforced policy. So, I called Sony and they said that unless there was 8 (EIGHT) pixels always ON, they would not replace or refund the monitor!!!

The monitor was made in Malaysia, and, I bet they mass produce the monitors with minimal quality control.

I got so upset, that I bought another LCD monitor (Envision) at the local Fry's Electronics. It was cheaper and the color was more natural. You loose the natural tones due to Sony's high contrast, so, pictures don't look normal.

Buyer beware.... check and confirm return policies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent LCD Monitor
This is the best looking 19inch monitor available. It has great 700:1 contrast ratio (good for blacker blacks and whiter whites) - making movie watching an awesome experience.

Although there is no DVI, picture quality is superb. Text is supersharp (I use window's Cleartype to smooth it out) even with analog only input. Sony understands the importance of picture quality and included a VERY short and thick analog cable. The shorter the cable is, the smaller the chance of signal deterioration. Buyer beware, placement might be an issue due to the short cable.

25ms response time is enough for most games, but when playing fast games, ghosting IS there. For example, in Unreal Tournament 2003, the flyby cam is fast enough to cause ghosting.

Also, I'm not sure how consistent Sony's quality control is, but my particular LCD came with ZERO dead or hot pixels. That's GOOD for a 19inch LCD.

PROS:
+picture quality is superb
+excellent 700:1 contrast ratio
+25ms reponse time fast enough for movies and most games
+beautiful frame/monitor design (the best looking series of flat panels right now imo)
+1024x768 native resolution is perfect for gamers (1600x1200 is too high, and 1024x768 is too low)

CONS:
-cost is among the most expensive 19" LCDs
-no DVI support (but includes short analog cable to minimize signal loss)
-no height adjustment

*for reference I am using this monitor with an ATI All-In-Wonder 9700 Pro

1-0 out of 5 stars GREAT!

Amazon.com Review

Designed for Sony Vaio MX series PCs and as an especially appropriate companion for your Sony Vaio PCV-MXS10, the Sony PCVD-15XD3 is an extraordinary monitor for value-conscious but demanding users. Its bright, colorful images are beautifully sharp, and its stylish casing is slim and elegant.

To set up the monitor, we connected the proprietary DVI-D monitor cable to the corresponding port on a Sony PCV-MXS10 PC, plugged in the AC power, and connected the USB cable. The monitor has a built-in USB hub with one upstream and four downstream ports. The monitor tilts but does not swivel. Sony recommends tilting the monitor 25 degrees off the vertical axis for optimum viewing. A jog switch on the side displays onscreen menus that adjust brightness, contrast, hue, saturation, and language. Our test model did not require adjusting, as the default values presented a superb picture.

To test the monitor, we displayed a variety of color images and motion graphics. Rated at a bright 400 candelas per square meter, the PCVD-15XD3 exhibited amazingly pure whites and rich, warm, accurate colors with high contrast. Even difficult silver shades and brushed aluminum looked surprisingly realistic. Nature scenes were stunning, with appropriately cool sky blues, warm floral reds and yellows, and subtle gradations in the hues of a rainbow. Rapid-refresh motion showed no signs of ghosting. Text was razor-sharp for even small fonts.

Colors remained bright and in good contrast from a variety of viewing angles, limits estimated at 150 degrees horizontal and 130 degrees vertical (manufacturer rating not available). Our test model had one defective pixel, an irritatingly bright red one that glowed continuously, distracting from an otherwise impressive experience.

The monitor comes with a weighted base for stability, power supply and cord, USB and monitor cables, instruction manual, and one-year warranty card. Although graphics professionals would need a larger monitor and higher resolution, general-purpose users will be hard-pressed to display images more beautifully on any 15-inch LCD. --Mike Brown, Editor ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Would love to, but....
I would love to write a review for this product because that would mean I actually have it! Is there ANY rational or reasonable excuse as to why it is now going on close to 5 MONTHS since my order has been placed, and will likely be a HALF YEAR before I actually receive it?! Would anybody there wait six months for anything? I must be nuts.

3-0 out of 5 stars What for the technology to improve and reduce in price
This monitor is ok. It produces and very good picture with bright and vivid colors. There is a good chance that you will get a bad pixel or two which can be a HUGE annoyance that you just can't seem to keep your eyes off. It has a solid base and seems well constructed. It is good for normal computing but if you are doing a lot of gaming or video i would steer clear of this display.

Note that this monitor is only for sony computer!!! It contains a proporitary cable ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother looking for anything else but a Sony....
To sum it up, the Sony E210 is incredible! The colors are vivid, text is sharp and the flat screen is sensational. The picture quality seems to get better each and every time I use my computer. I had a Samsung 700NF before this but had to return it due to a defect. I thought the Samsung was sharp but this Sony blows it away! I did a lot of research before buying the Sony and originally was trying to find something comparable to the Sony without paying the premium price of a Sony. Trust me, the extra cost of a Sony is well worth it!! Follow the old saying, if the price seems too good to be true, then your probably going to get what you pay for. Buy this baby, you will not regret it!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best 17" Monitor [for the price] on the market
I have always loved Sony monitors, and this one is especially appealing. With a max resolution of 1600x1200, max refresh rates up 120Hz, a perfectly flat screen, and the typical, beautiful, trinitron display, this monitor is only rivalved by the Sony G200 17" in the price range. The On Screen Display has is very easy to use, and is very powerful. It comes with a color profile for Windows 98/2000 and can definately be setup and used in a print or video editing setup. I have used the Viewsonic, Hitatchi, and Princeton monitors in this price range, and there is no comparison at all. This monitor is sharper, has blacker blacks, whiter whites, and the color far more true. I highly recomend this product, and all Sony Monitors. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Review of Sony's 17" Flat Panel LCD Monitor
You'll be shocked when you open the box with your new Sony monitor - there's almost nothing in it. A manual, 2 cables and the display. The instructions for connecting are very brief and to the point. Follow them exactly. If you are using an old monitor, just disconnect the cables from the monitor and use them, rather than the new ones. Saves time. You should be delighted when you turn it on. There seems to be no problems out there waiting for you, at least I couldn't locate any thru the sales clerks. A fine product.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good resolution but broken within 2 months
this monitor has good resolution and contrast ratio...however, the screen turned complete white and blank after just 1.5months of use. i ended up switching back to my old CRT monitor and it worked fine...call up sony and was told they can only send me a refurbished monitor because its more than a month since purchase..and there you go, I lost $100 value in less than 2 months...i am very disappointed with the quality of the monitor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Quality of a Plasma
The quality of this monitor is amazing. I purcased the Limited Dark Blue Edition off of Sonystyle.com. The qualiy is simply amazing. It is definetly worth the extra $$$. However I would reccomend the 15 inch version for the typical user.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
This monitor is attractive and has a beautiful picture. I don't play fast action games so I can't vouch for its performance there. But my strategy games work great.

Re - the reviewer complaining about dead pixels - do not buy such an expensive item from a place where it can't be sent back.

5-0 out of 5 stars not disappointed
I don't think you will be disappointed with this monitor. I absolutely love mine. I shopped around for months before deciding to purchase this one. You know, $550 is not pocket change. I also am an avid Linux user, and I haven't had any issues with Linux drivers and this monitor. The color saturation is great. The clarity is phenomenal. I am very happy that I purchased this Sony monitor. ... Read more
