5-0 out of 5 stars You Can Rely On Sony To Do It Right!
I bought this 15" LCD because I needed to downsize my clutter.
I had a 17" NEC (bought here 6 months ago)
I've always relied on Sony products before and thought I would try out the NEC. What a mistake!
The brightness and the clarity of the Sony have to be seen to be appreciated.
The zero footprint is a bonus to the space impaired.
You won't be dissapointed with this one. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Watching DVD's and Retouching Digital Photos
I bought this Sony 19" Trinitron Monitor with the intention of watching DVD movies and retouching digital photos. I've been very pleased.

For DVD's, the picture is sharp, and, with my Sony Vaio computer, the action is smooth and continuous.

For photo retouching, the resolution is high, and the color reproduction (as compared to the actual printed photo) is extremely accurate.

The monitor was plug-and-play (no adjustments necessary when I installed it, nor again since). The monitor's (exterior) color also matches my Sony Vaio (desktop) precisely. (Cool!)

I could've gotten a LCD monitor. But it would've been smaller and less sharp. The 19" Trinitron was the largest that would fit on my desk. Overall, I've been very happy.

For maximum DVD and digital photo performance -- this is clearly the monitor to get!

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Pay Extra For A Sony
I paid extra to buy a Sony with the expectation that it would be a more reliable product and with the further expectation that if I were to have problem with the monitor that Sony would stand behind its product. Unfortunately that has not proven to be the case. The monitor began to develop problems three weeks after the warranty had expired and Sony's response was essentially "tough luck". ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Major Problems!!!
I have gone through 3 Sony SDM-S81 monitors and still can't get one that will work more than a month or two. I am trying now to get a replacement model from Sony - they have sent 3 rebuilt units that all end up doing the same thing. Screen has green-glittery haze and contoured lines moving around screen. Very disappointed with Sony for this junk of a monitor. Paid 800.00 for mis-engineered Sony mistake apparently.

1-0 out of 5 stars Big Problems
I've had the same problems with this monitor. This first year is was fine and then it started to go. I called SONY and they send me a rebuilt and that one did the same this after a week. I am now on to my third monitor and just today it started to go bad. So it looks like I'll be calling SONY again. I very disappointed I've got a SONY TV that is 30 years old. I guess they just don't built things like they used to.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great monitor. No problems whatsoever
I'm not sure what the problem is with the previous 2 reviewers. We've got a large number of these monitors installed in my office, and there have been no problems whatsoever. Both text and images are quite clear with excellent color balance, brightness, and contrast, with excellent and simple controls via the buttons on the front of the bezel. The screen is viewable from a wide angle (an advantage in an office setting when others need to see what's on the screen, of course).

There's an easily-lifted panel on the back which conceals the power connector and the video cable connector, and the user needs to make sure the cables are flat in order to properly shut the panel; but that hasn't been an issue.

I recommend this monitor.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T Buy Sony SDM-S81!!!!
I'm having the exact same problem. IN the begining everything was great, but after a year it is flashing green pixels around dark black contours.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T Buy Sony SDM-S81
My Sony SDM-S81 was fine when I first got it, but now it's having major problems. Every now and then it flips out, creating a haze of flashing green pixels around dark black contours, red pixels around tan contours and blue just shimmers. Now it's even worse, flipping all the dark parts to gray lines unless I raise the brightness enough.

I don't know if anyone else is having this problem, but i wouldn't recomend this monitor.

And sony won't even look at it to be fixed cause it's been 6 months since i got it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome monitor
I have had it for 6 months. It's the best monitor you could ever have. I've seen the other trinitron tube monitors. This is the clearest, brightest, and sharpest one around. And it's big. I have kept it at 1152-864 resolution and i can see every little font very clearly and comfortably. It does take some space but it's absolutelly worth it. I cant stand LCD-s. The image you get with the E500 is 10 times better than that of a LCD. and the price is cheaper.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
I've had many many monitors over the years, everything from a 13" to this 21"... and I have to say that this is the sharpest of them all... excellent image quality! This is worth the cash! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A very good little Monitor
After carefully going over many different makes/models of CRT's i finally decided on the Sony CPD-G200. Due to space contraints, i went with this relativly small-footprint 17" monitor. I work mainly with spreadsheets and 2D(some 3D) graphics, and so far the monitor has had GREAT color, clarity, contrast and looks rock solid at 1280x1024 @ 85Hz with no eye strain from all night work sessions. It turns on fast, looks simple/clean, leaves me more desk space and is trouble free. i use his bigger 19" brother at work all day and am very satisfied with my purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sony CPD-G200
A lot of reading and visiting stores went into this purchase..time well spent. When compared to Samsung and Viewsonic, this Sony wins hands down. The aperature grill tube is 50% brighter than the shadow mask tubes. The price was a little more, but the Sony reliability and techology is worth the difference. Set up was a snap, took 5 minutes. The only draw back is the On Screen Display controll ball (located under the front edge of the screen). It's location puts your wrist at an awkward angle to make adjustments, which are easy and logical to do. There is a nice reset button which fixes your initial errors in geometry adjustments. Focas is sharp and crisp even at 1280x1024. This model's 85mhz refresh rate has absolutely no flicker. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Dog for Sony
I purchased this monitor from Comp-USA.It failed after 10 months.I took a month to straighten out the paperwork, Comp-USA had the wrong serial number on my invoice. The Refurbished unit arrived and died after 4 months. Not a very good track record for Sony! They would not replace this unit. They said my experiance was atypical.Probably not, based on other reviews I've seen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Very disappointing
The HMD-A200 was the first name brand monitor we purchased after owning an "off brand" 15" for several years with no problems. The Sony gave out 1 month and 24 days after the warranty ran out.The Sony was certainly not inexpensive, much more so in fact than many of the other brands. It did look great--right up till the screen went black.Your money is best spent on another product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome!
I must have spent two weeks straight researching monitors on the internet, reading reviews and looking over their specs. Then, I'd go to Best Buy, Circuit City, and other places to actually see the quality of the picture. This one really caught my eye. Besides being a great looking monitor, it has a beautiful picture and a good on-screen menu. The best part about it, for me anyway, is that it's a Sony. I've always had excellent quality from all their products, and there isn't a brand name that I trust more.
If you've been spending a number of days looking over a bunch of monitors like I did, you'll notice that you may never find one that has all good reviews. There are always people who think something else is better, but so far, I have yet to find one that exceeds this. Well, I hope this helps you in trying to find the "perfect monitor." Best of luck!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor
When I first Purchased my Sony VAIO I needed a Monitor and the A200 17" is the one I Purchased! I did have a Gateway 17" . Compared to the gateway The sony is the best! Really you can't compare the two! The sony is in a place of its own! It is so sharp and easy to adjust. I am very happy with the sony 17" A200! I mean WOW! You have to own one to understand! the colors are great. Its a Trintron ! Just like the T.V. but better ,way better!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My education
Today I purchased this great Sony monitor at a well known store. After I installed and began using it I went to My Simon.com where I discovered that your store online beat the so called discount price that I paid for this item. Next time before buying anything else computer related, I'll comparison shop at My Simon.com Thanks for the education. Regards, Pete M. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
If you're looking to treat yourself to a new monitor, you won't be disappointed with the SDM-81.At 18" you'll have plenty of bright, crisp display room. Also, with both digital and analog connections you won't be forced to upgrade your video card to enjoy this display.

The response rate is between 20 and 30 ms (according to Sony's site), allowing for good picture quality even during fast screen changes.I was a bit worried about this aspect of LCD monitors since I play fast moving games, but haven't noticed any blur or distortion.

Setting up the display is as simple as dropping it on your desk and hooking up the standard connections (oh yes, it is at this pont that you will truly appreciate the space savings :).Cables are inserted into vertical connectors on the back of the display and are neatly concealed by the rear panel and cable guides.Once you get it running you'll probably want to make some adjustments, especially if you're using an analog connection. The instruction manual does a good job at guiding you through the process.Personally I found I needed to adjust the phase and pitch as well as the color temperature (the default setting is much too blue) to get the best picture.

So, why only 4 stars?Well, nothing's perfect .. :)I have noticed that color can be uneven across the screen. Also, when the screen is predominantly black you can see places where the backlighting is uneven (mostly near the edges). Finally, the screen seems to have a bit of "sheen" to it.It isn't glare, but almost seems like the screen itself has a shiny quality. In all fairness, I don't notice this very much.

Overall, I love this monitor and although it has a few flaws I wouldn't think twice about owning it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning!
This LCD replaced my Sony GDM-PS400 19" Trinitron.Wow, what a difference!Super-sharp at 1280x1024!This LCD has a gorgeous display.I'm currently running it in analog mode from a Matrox G450.I can't imagine how it could possibly look better with the DVI connector!

Unlike many other LCDs, this upconverts lower resolutions really well... smoothing the image to make it appear less blocky.

While this monitor looked great right out of the box, I finally got around to trying the Utility on the included CD that helps you adjust the Pitch/Phase and it image quality was even better.... so if you buy this don't forget to run that utility!

Looking forward to upgrading my G450 to a G550 for DVI... :-) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Many years of refinement...
Sony monitors have been around forever, but I've been working with different generations of Sony monitors for the past 4 years, and the latest Trinitron is nearly perfect. The image is sharp and clear from center to edge, and if there's any curvature in the screen vertically or horizontally I can't detect it.

They also finally got the controls right; a four-direction button adjusts brightness/contrast by default, and is also used to adjust the other settings when the on screen menu is active.

A detachable monitor cable would have made this monitor perfect, but it's only a minor annoyance. It's not the cheapest monitor around, but it's a Sony, and you know the Trinitron CRT still will be looking great long into the future. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars bad price, bad quality, bad support
besides the high price, my monitor would not turn on. after hours of trying to talk to a human being, i finaly reached someone, and was disconected. it took over a week to get through to them and know how to fix my monitor. i don't recomend anything that has "SONY" written on it

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply Wonderful LCD
I've been using the N50PS for two months now and I love it. Everything from the size to the usability of it is wonderful. Sony's design stands out especially in that they have cleverly packed all the processing into a small box that can be stored away. All your VGA, Power, sound, etc., run into this box and through a single proprietary cable run to the monitor itself.

The monitor, coupled with the single cable, make an incredibly small impact for those space conscious users. The monitor is as thin as .5 inches at the edges and can be easily hung, to use even less space. Sony also added the ability for a dual VGA input, so the monitor can be used as the primary VGA device for two computers, simply switched though a button on the panel.

Overall, I love the monitor, and while the price is a bit steep, the functionality and largely the size of the monitor make it worth it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars High Technology, Superb Build, Gracefully Styled Design
We have owned our SONY SDM-N80 for 2.5 years & we enjoy its high-level function & understated style daily. Once I decided I was going to build a computer to better position ourselves for future upgrades, I knew the monitor had to be a choice of quality, utility & form.

Sure, you can get a boxy CRT monitor for super cheap these days, taking up your space, - but an LCD is most likely the wish now, right?....No worries, LCD prices are falling!

So, helpful pushes toward SONY's SDM-N80:
1. Classical, understated design which inspires!
2. If you go for an LCD, make sure it's Digital (otherwise it's a bit of a waste technologically speaking) => This model offers both Analog & Digital capabilities
3. Truly clutterless workspace with one-cord, break-out box
4. Base has two USB ports, act as a hub for other peripherals, -clever & helps hide more cables, et cetera
5. SONY picture quality
6. SONY reliability (especially since we're here rating it high after 2.5 years of ownership)
7. *You DO NOT want to save a little now & look at beige/black plastic framing bezels for the next some odd years! ;)

...P>One thing that's VERY nice about this LCD is the dual input option. The base break-out box has 2 video inputs (w/ USB & Audio input). The inputs are configured as one normal VGA port & one DVI port. The cable that comes with monitor is a DVI to analog converter cable so you can hook up 2 normal PCs right out of the box, - quite handy. Two PCs may be utilized at once, - switching between them with one button-press; highly convenient features.

The speakers are tiny yet sufficient, but, you're not buying an LCD monitor & comparing speaker quality. Thus, SONY includes them, plus provides jacks for upgraded audiophiles.

Video quality is excellent. The display is very high contrast & colors are rich, textured, realistic & vibrant, like SONY Trinitrons of legend. The LCD we received had no defective pixels.

The viewing angle isn't quite as broad as some, - but plenty wide.

The A/D Converter is of superb quality. On other LCD's the sharp pixel boundaries are jittery, - here, it's rock solid.

The scaling of input signals is wonderful. The LCD smoothes out scaled images, so you are treated to a very smooth picture.

Ok.
Good luck to you.
I'll leave you to choose with your priorities.(...my wife has been happier with my monitor choice than with my computer-building skills). ;)

I know there are better contrast ratios to be had on LCDs or bigger sizes for less dough, - but we'll be getting another SONY SDM-N80 from Amazon; 18" & superb build quality is big, better & best enough!

***Wait until you get the reactions from guests at the home office! "FOR-get-aboutit!!" You'll see Delight, Awe, Respect & then a little friendly Jealousy come into their eyes! Then, you'll know. You made the right LCD decision. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The GDM F520's short-neck CRT design squeezes an extensive 19.8 inches of viewing area into a unit less than 19 inches deep, allowing for increased space in close quarters. A cathode-ray tube that's 50 percent shorter than conventional CRTs places the entire 21-inch screen comfortably on any desktop. Image clarity is maximized with a 0.22-millimeter aperture grille pitch, and Sony's Enhanced Elliptical Correction System automatically corrects picture deformation for sharper video. The GDM F520's large screen area packs a full palette of resolutions to adapt to a variety of video memory freedoms and constraints. A maximum resolution density of 1,800 x 1,440 dpi at 80 Hz can accommodate your applications' most demanding video requirements, from DVD to CAD design.

Sony's GeoLock circuitry erects an impervious barrier between the CRT and any stray electromagnetic field the GDM F520 may encounter, resulting in consistently stable, uniform image projection. Active Signal Correction eliminates the need to manually adjust the screen settings by instantly optimizing the basic picture controls for largest viewing area. All digital controls are available, however, at the touch of the keypad below the screen. The GDM F520 is intended for Windows NT/98 platform communication with PCs but is fully Macintosh compatible. Dual input control allows for simultaneous connection to two computers, including both Macintosh and PC at once. International Energy Star compliance ensures limited emissions and more efficient power consumption. Four active USB ports are built into the base for lightning fast transfer rates. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Had it for a year. Perfect and problem free, and it's on almost all the time. Rock solid, sharp, even color. Flawless.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony GDM-F500
Re two of the above comments, the OSD shows the current refresh rate when you press "menu." And any yellowish areas ("stains") in the corners can be fixed by tweaking the LANDING controls.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest
This monitor has one the best CRT monitor award in more than one magazine. is grille pitch is yet to be challenged and it has good refresh rates at high resolutions. one problem is that there are 2 wavy lines that go down the screen but only some people notice them and most people just ignore them. I recommend that you at least try this out if you are going for a high end CRT.

3-0 out of 5 stars A great monitor, until it goes bad.
I originally had a GDM-F500, which was a great monitor, until it started flickering and becoming blurry. I had it sent in for repair, and after dealing with tech support for weeks, finally got a new monitor, a GDM-F520. Another great monitor, but now this one is developing the same problem. You would think that Sony would have the sense to fix a common problem when they updated the model. Order at your own risk.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sony GDM-F520 review
After 5 years of owning a 21" Viewsonic P-815 which I was very pleased with, it burnt out. I opted to try this Sony GDM-F520. I am definatly not used to the 2 horizontal lines (wires) that Sony uses to support the APGrill. They are very annoying and look like defects, probably the worst thing about this monitor. It really bugs me. The text also has a slightly blury effect at the 1600x1200 resolution that I am running at, even after trying to fix it with the controlls. It's not too bad, but not great eaither. The price is really high too. The good things about this monitor are that it's brighter than my viewsonic, has more and better controlls, flat screen, and a smaller depth and footprint. Was it worth twice the price? I would say yes if I couldn't see the horizontal wire shadows and the text were sharper, otherwise, I wish I would have just paid to fix my viewsonic. Yet I give this monitor 4 stars because it's graphics and colors are the best I've ever seen, and I love the high bandwidth (2048x1536 @85Hz!!) This is the first monitor that outperforms my video card, rather than the other way around. High refresh rates are good! I wish it came in standard beige color. I also wish it had an onscreen display of the current refresh rate. ... Read more
