1-0 out of 5 stars HP customer support a joke!
I bought this monitor in November of '03. I have sent it back twice and still don't have possession. I was told in February of this year that they would put a "rush" on it for repair. Still haven't seen it! I guess their idea of a rush and mine are two different things.
I was a HUGE Sony fan. Was is the key word here. They will not replace it, sent it back once and said there was nothing wrong with it after having it for 5 weeks. I guess they don't mind having blurred print and discolorations throughout. I will not be buying another Sony product again. Customer support is now an oxymoron.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Buy!
Nice, clear monitor. True colors and viewing angle is a plus. Graphics/text are sharp and clear from any angle. Would highly recommend.

3-0 out of 5 stars Sleek design, average performance
Images and text on this monitor are ok, the design is steril and industrial. Once you get close and touch it, it feels "plasticky" and flimsy.
It is in the same price range with other 18" LCD monitors but lacks some of their features, such as a DVI input or height adjustment.
I would recommend the ViewSonic, Samsung or even the Mitsubishi monitors, due to image quality and features over this one any day. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's awesome
I just installed this 23 incher on two PC's. It's great! This thing is huge, it's gonna take some getting used to! It's my second PC LCD monitor, replacing an early 15" Sony.
The only thing I could wish for would be a split screen button.
I wish I could split the screen and view both of my PC's at the same time, as opposed to the switch to toggle between input #1 and #2. It's still great in that I now have one monitor on my desk's top, but split screen would be much better for me at times. Also worthy of mention, is the lag beteween toggling from 1 to 2. There's a little more than a split second of black, for the other desktop to render. Most people wont mind this I'm sure, but I hope newer models would provide an instant transition.
I'm also interested in a new video card to unleash this beast, the ATI line is looking good. Seems like they have earned some rave reviews with the 9700 and better lines. Also, all the pixels on mine seem to do their job perfectly. I read about someone having a problem with a few of theirs, glad I didn't.

I'm looking forward to not having to slide left to right just to see the entire canvas I'm working on in Photoshop. I'm not a graphics designer by trade. But I do my fair share of Photoshopping for my websites, so this is a welcome addition to my business.

All in all, if you can spare the cash, get this Sony without looking back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stuck Pixels Problematic...
First let me say that this is an outstanding monitor. The picture clairty is great as is the contrast and brightness. Its easy to hook up and adjust and the +- tilting stand is great. The huge 1920x1200 resolution is additive.

But here's the bad news. Sony's Q/A on this is piss-poor. I have 4 of these monitors and every single one of them has had to be returned due to between 1 and 10 stuck on pixels. Typically they are the green ones, but there have been a few red ones too. Most recently I just bought two more of these monitors and the both had stuck on pixels! One had just one, but the other had 10 or more. I took that later back and just got the replacement... Much to my dismay, it too has at least four stuck on pixels. I know that they make them without any stuck pixels because the first two I bought last year had stuck pixels, but the replacment units did not.

Its just a crying shame Sony can hire some Q/A staff without Coke-bottle glasses. These are truely awesome monitors, but this having to take them back is a huge pain. In summary, I've had my hands on seven of these monitors and 5 of them have had stuck pixels. Check your's closely by selecting an unused input in a darken room.

I highly recomment this monitor, and its definatly worth the dorking around to get one without defects. Just beware that the chances are high you're going to get one with stuck pixels. Choose your vendor carefully, as I've noted that many of the vendors are now applying disclaimers that say something like "no returns for less that 8 defective pixels". That's an unacceptable return policy, and they should be avoided, especially on a monitor that costs $2600.

4-0 out of 5 stars I Like It
I went into fry's and set up the sony sdm-p232w/b side by side with the apple cinema hd 23 inch. Ostensibly these are the same monitor, however it is my perception that the apple has more vivid colours (aussie spelling ;-)). Here's my guess at why .... Some time ago I was looking into anti-glare coatings for glass for framing pictures. There is a huge variation in quality of anti-glare coating and a comensurate range in costs. The really really good ones used for "museum" jobs render the glass invisible and cost an order of magnitude more than the next step down which are still good, but not in the same ball park. The cheaper the anti-glare coating, the more the colours wash and the more "visible" the glass itself is. Same rules apply when the coating is applied to plastic. So my take on the situation is that the apple and sony monitors probably come off the same production lines but then have different anti-glare coatings applied. In my case, I still bought the more expensive, less vivid, but more PC friendly Sony ... too many issues with DVI-I to ADC and finding a KVM switch that would deal with DVI instead of analog (I run my monitor off analog and it looks great).

3-0 out of 5 stars good and bad
good: great picture quality.

bad: very noisy fan. drives my crazy.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best monitor there is (or at least tied for best)
I agonized over this purchase for some time. Part of my agony was due to the lack of reviews on the internet for this product, which is probably due to how new this monitor is. Now that I've actually purchased the monitor, I don't regret it at all. This is the best monitor you can buy, or at least it's tied with the Apple Cinema Display (as they are basically the same monitor). It's perfectly clear and sharp, and the amount of screen real estate is astounding.

I wasn't so sure about this when I went into the store to compare models. First, the store didn't have the monitor set at its native 1920 x 1200 resolution, which is the resolution everything looks sharpest at. Second, they had the monitor hooked up through an analog connection instead of the DVI-D hookup. I was hoping that this was why the monitor didn't look "beyond my wildest dreams" in the store. I expected that this would improve when I got home and plugged it in to my ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 PRO card. I was right! The difference in picture quality between what I saw in the store and what I see at home is phenomenal. Nothing could have prepared me for how sharp every nook and cranny of the screen is. It's perfect. Even my wife who was hesitant about me spending this kind of money on a monitor, sat down in front of it and said, "Oh wow!".

The monitor is cake to set up, has both digital and analog connections. I recommend a good video card (like I said, I'm using the ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 PRO), and they work together beautifully. It is a joy to work on, and much, much better than any CRT I've ever worked on.

I played some Jedi Knight II on the monitor and it's fantastic. Beyond the quality I thought it would have. I also watched the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring extended edition DVD on it, and it's the best picture you can get. I wouldn't mind the monitor being a little wider for DVD's, but the picture couldn't be better. Over twice the resolution of Plasma screens! No latency, ghosting, or lag that I saw. And burn-in is not a problem with LCD screens as it is with Plasma!

I highly recommend this monitor to anyone who is struggling with whether or not to purchase it. If you hook it up with the right video card, using DVI, and set at the right resolution, it will give you the best picture you've ever seen.

(As an aside, this monitor is supposedly the exact same as the Apple Cinema Display. The employee at the store I went to told me he thought the Apple 23" display was brighter, and it definitely looked that way in the store, but I think it's because the Sony monitor was not hooked up correctly. Once I got home and hooked it up, it looks at least as bright as the Apple. For $100, you can buy a plug that will hook up the Apple display to a PC, but you will not have as much control over the Display settings as you do with the Sony. Not sure if this is worth the extra money or not, but the Sony display also tilts up and down, whereas the Apple does not.)

Also, this monitor does have a fantastic viewing angle, and looks great from the side as well. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great monitor
I bought this monitor second-hand for my mother, to go with her new computer. Everyone in my family who has seen it has been impressed with it. At first I was worried about the wire shadows, since some users have complained about them, but they are difficult to notice and haven't been an issue. Overall, this is a sturdy and well-built monitor with a good picture and one of the most stylish cases I've seen. It really looks and feels high-end. Though it may not perform to the standards of the most demanding users, it's great for anyone who wants a stylish mid-sized flat screen unit.

3-0 out of 5 stars Ho-Hum
I got this monitor and was thrilled when I took it out of the box. However, whenever I display a white page, I get a really annoying hum sound. When I return to dark, it goes away. Besides that, it is a nice monitor, but now that I have had it 15 days, the store wouldn't take it back.

1-0 out of 5 stars HMD-A200 Production Problems?
I had a highly visible "distortion" problem with this monitor. Vertical lines near the middle of the picture were severely distorted. The monitor has built in adjustments to deal with distortion around the edges, but there's no way to control distortion near the center. I had high hopes for this monitor, but had to return 2 of them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 17" Monitor on the Market
The HMD-A200 17" is a great Monitor for anyone to use. I have had 4 computer monitors and I would say the fourth one is the best. The Sony A-200 17" is By far the best 17" around! I've heard of some people haveing problems with the display I've found it to be the most simplest to use and the best display! One button lets you change all of the display options. Wow! Very crisp clear screen! If you don't have one get one! You will be so ammmmazzzzed by this Monitor. You'd think that it was a 19" really!

3-0 out of 5 stars A bit Disappointed
The reason I bought sony monitor because of its sharp and clear display. I also like the flat screen, however, it also comes with some distortion (I believe it's called pincushion effect). I find it disturbing. I tried to use sony's menu to correct the problem, but it doesn't work. What I see is slightly curved lines instead of horizontal lines. Interestingly, this distortion gives a 3D effect to the pictures that is displaying which is not a good thing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great moniter
I must admit, This is fairly expensive, but when you demand quality... expect to pay the highest price. This mointer is capible of all sorts of "geomitry" configurations,,, so as you can get it to look great on any Operating System, with any graphics card. As other reviewers have said, it does make a very notice'able noise when you put it on, but who cares. As other reviewers have also said, there are 2 horizontal lines on the 19inch. This is built into the moniter, and there is nothing you can do about it. On PURE white, and playing some games it is notice'able if you look right at it, but if your about a foot away, this is trivial.

i have used this with many graphics cards, and from cheap (tnt2) to semi-high end (geforce4 ti4200), this montier works very good. I have it running on a ati radeon 9200 right now, 1152x864 pixels @ 100hertz refresh rate, and this is godly.

As another reviewer said, it "may" come where the screen is distorted,,, this also occures with diffrent refresh rates and graphic cards, Please note though, that the moniter is fully configur'able, and with some fine tuneing, will look perfect (a major plus).

The only downside, is the weight... This thing weighs a TON. I have a problem putting it on my computer desk, because it just weighs so much, so i had to put supports on the desk.

i work with alot of moniters, and there has yet to be one that can beat this in picture quality. refresh rates are un-notice'able on high hertz.

I would also recommend any other SONY moniter out there currently, even their LCD moniters are TOP NOTCH.

I have also had a 3 year old 19inch sony trinitron moniter, still works flawlessly.

The anti-glare feature is also a huge plus, it will dim artificial light, and this comes in very handy when working at night.

~Hope this helps

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 19inch for graphics
I work in front a of a monitor 10 hours a day and my old Viewsonic was causing me eye fatigue. I got this Sony HMD A440 to replace it and I've never been happier. This monitor is completely flat, it's bright, crisp, and has a high refresh rate. Text and graphics look great on it. All monitors have distortions - it's a fact. This Sony has a tiny bit of edge-bowing along the sides, but this can be worked out using the control knob. (I've definitely seen a lot worse distortions in other monitors!) Like all Trinitron monitors, this one has two tiny hair-sized lines that run horizontally across the upper and lower portions of the screen. Some people can be bothered by this, but as for me, it's BARELY noticeable. I mean, the only way you would notice them is if you were actually looking for them. During normal use, these lines are effectively invisible. I work on 3D graphics all day long, and I consider myself to be pretty demanding as far as my equipment is concerned. This Sony HMD-A440 19inch flat monitor is bar far the best 19inch I have used. It's great.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best in CRT.
I also use this monitor for gaming, programming, and its high resolution and super refresh rates. This product is better in all aspects technically than any other CRT model out there. The visible lines that one other user complained about is totaly true. They're there, and they are there on all CRT models. Its part of the technology to keep the screen flat. I suppose this does pose a problem if you enjoy a perfect screen, but as stated by another user, this is an issue with ALL crt's and not just Sony's. Its like complaining that a canoe doesn't have a sail.

The only reason i took a star off is because of the high price. You can always expect a higher price from sony, because of the name, the guaratees etc. None of which are worth that much in the end.

Bottom line is that this is a great product that delivers. If your budget is tight, i'd suggest going with a Compaq CRT. They are much less expensive, and provide almost exactly the same quality. A layman wouldn't know the difference. But as i said when i purchased my HMD, nothing looks like a sony!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Monitor
I just got this monitor for just 190 bucks. It's awesome -- especially at this price. As for the guy who complained about the "2 minute black lines", this is totally normal and is found on every trinitron monitor in existance, you dont't notice it during use and it is necessary to hole up the flat screen. Great Monitor, highly recommended. The noise is frightening to say the least, but since it only occurs as it turns on, no real problem there either.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good product but suffers from quality control issues.
Researched a number of 19inch monitors, NEC, ViewSonic, Samsung. Finally picked this one up yesterday from ... I bought it becuase of the high refresh rates at higher resolutions. I coupled it with a PnY Verto 4200 GeForce 4 card which is awesome.

I'll be returning the monitor later today. Here's why:

The monitor makes an audible "Clunk" noise when powered on. This is the automatic Degauss on power up. Something Sony don't mention ANYWHERE. This also happens with their 27" TVs which I also have. (By the way, the Sony TV I have blew up after 100days of use, just after the warranty expired).

There are a number of geometry issues out of the box:
1. the picture is skewed to the left - fixalble with the controls
2. The convergence is off leading to fuzzy text in the corners. You can fix this but it makes the text fuzzy in the center of the screen.
3. The WORST thing I found is 2 minute black horizontal lines across the screen, the first is 1/3rd of the way down and the second is 2/3rds of the way down the screen. These are present in all resolutions. Also the fuzzy picture detracts from the comfortable refresh rate so that no longer is a reason to buy this monitor.

I'm giving it 2 stars because the picture isn't the worst out there but for ... you can do MUCH better.

I'll be picking up a Viewsonic ... exchange this 53lb piece of junk. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

With a wafer-thin screen, Sony's SDM-N5O monitor is perfectly suited for users with limited desk space. The screen measures a mere 0.5 inch at its edge, and the total weight is less than 6 pounds. The bi-flex arm supplies a variety of viewing angles, while two cool technologies--Digital FlexRes and Auto ImageSet--maintain clear color separation and crisp imaging from every point of view.

The single cord that handles the SDM-N50's audio, video, and power can easily be tucked out of sight, allowing you to achieve that old dream of a clutter-free workspace. The full 15 inches of screen provides the perfect-size view for users in a variety of applications, but where space is at a premium.

For users who enjoy their computer's audio functions as much as the video, the two built-in speakers are a real bonus. Fitted into the frame, they contain the expected Sony quality but consume little additional space. Two onscreen controls supply bass boost and wide-stereo settings, for a true home-theater experience. The other 14 onscreen controls allow users to easily customize their settings and choose from multiple languages.

Sony's limited warranty covers parts, labor, and backlight for a full three years. --Jill Lightner ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great LCD monitor, but kind of pricey!
A great LCD monitor, but kind of pricey! For those of you who have a limited desk space, I would highly recommend this monitor cause you can adjust the angle and height, which hardly any other monitor manufacture has this adjustment. You will be questioned by many and few who will ask why anyone would pay [price]for this type of monitor and elsewhere you can get a Samsung 15" 570V TFT LCD Monitor and others!

Just say to them that the Sony monitor is able to be placed in a very tight, small desktop area, where space is extremely limited.

Also, this monitor comes built with stereo speakers to hook up to your sound board. Has bass boost, stereo wide settings, etc.

Would I highly recommend this to you, yes, if your needs are like mine where your desktop space is extremely limited and you want an LCD type of monitor!

4-0 out of 5 stars absolutely fabulous style; not the best price
I have the PS version of this LCD panel (without the stand & speakers). It looks stunning, because it is so light, thin, and stylish. It takes up the least space on the desktop of ANY 15" monitor (CRT or LCD). The analog to digital conversion is rock-solid.

My unit has one pixel that is stuck on. This is common with LCD panels, and is only noticeable with very dark images.

You pay a price for style, however. Sony prices this model higher than most other LCD panels. ... :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing&stylish
This is a very good product from Sony,I didn't have any problems with it.resolution and colors are just perfect also the integrated speakers gives you a good sound.the only problem I had that it's only 110v so i couldn't take it with me back home.

2-0 out of 5 stars Had a bad luck with this one
I thought that the monitor was great when I purchased it. Ordered Sony DeluxePro SDM-X72/B on Jan 21 and on Feb 7 had to contact Sony because the monitor went bad. All I could see on the screen were tiny vertical lines. Sony had no problem replacing the monitor but it took them 2 weeks responding to my original inquiry. I called Sony every day for a 1 1/2 week. After 2 weeks, they informed me that they couldn't replace the exact model since this model is not in production any longer but offered me SDM-X73/B. It is identical to the originally purchased monitor except for the design of the case. I expect to receive the new monitor next week according to Sony Rep.

1-0 out of 5 stars broke
I used this monitor for about 2 months, and during that time it worked perfectly. However, it suddenly refused to turn on. I sent it in for repairs and was charged $70 for it, even though the product was still under warranty! Sony claimed that the company that I had taken the monitor to was not authorized for such repairs. Yet when I had called Sony beforehand, this company was included among the list of "authorized" repair shops. This is extremely poor service on Sony's part! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony 17" Flat Screen Trinitron Monitor
This monitor is perhaps one of the best CRT's that we still have on this planet. I own one and it has been my pleasure to own it. The colors on this screen are superb and dazzling and that encouraged me to design a website in as many colors as possible. Its non-glare flat screen is soothing to the eyes. The resolution is perfect and after the light weight flat-screen monitors came to the market, the only factor goes against this monitor is its old fashioned weight. The quality is so good that it is not a serious factor at all. The only reason for me to replace it would be another Sony with a bigger screen and lighter weight. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best 19" Flat Monitor
I've done some research on all the 19" Flat monitors on the market before I bought the Sony E400. It's one of the best quality monitors you can buy for the money. The picture is incredibly sharp and clear.

5-0 out of 5 stars A they say in Wayne's World... " E X C E L L E N T ! "
Incredibly crisp image - even miniscule text is sharp a legible. Great color saturation - colors look rich. Image is so sharp I can display at 1280x1024 and leave the settings on "small fonts and small icons" without any strain. Fairly short for a 19" monitor too - takes up less space than my 17" Nanao did. Image sharpness blows away my old 19" Viewsonic 790 - which it has, ahem, replaced.

4-0 out of 5 stars An almost perfect monitor
I love my e400, only odd problem is the power switch. I'm having problems similar to the one mentioned in Bryan Davis' post. The switch always turns the monitor on...but sometimes doesnt turn it off...

3 power switch problems..Hmm....whats going on here...

other than that....its a-w-e-s-o-m-e.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
After buying and returning two NEC FE950 monitors due to poor picture quality, I bought this one, and am very happy with my purchase. It worked wonderfully right out of the box without any tweaking. The picture is sharp, clear and uniform across the entire screen, and great for both text and graphics. The packaging is relatively small for a 19" monitor. There is a tiny bit of moire on the shut down screen, but it is not noticeable during normal use. I consulted [web site] before purchasing this monitor, and I was not disappointed.

Sincerely, Ilya Rosenberg

2-0 out of 5 stars You can do better
This is a great monitor, if you don't receive one that is defective. I received two defective Sony CPD-E400 monitors in sequence.

The first monitor had terrible color banding. The display had three distinguishable colors.

The power switch also worked on a random basis. Sometimes it would power up on the first click, other times it would take more. Needless to say, I returned this monitor for a new one.

The second monitor arrived and the display was perfect. It was crisp and clear and I was extremely happy until I tried to turn the monitor off. Guess what, another bad power switch. Except this time, to turn this monitor off I have to pull the power plug.

I've given up on the Sony CPD-E400 monitor. Given its limited feature set, I knew it was overpriced from the beginning. Virtually every other 19 inch monitor on the market is a better value. However, the prospect of a flat screen was like the call of a siren. I was drawn in and I couldn't stop myself.

This monitor is great, IF you get one that works. Roll the dice and hope you don't come up snake eyes. My advice is to buy locally in case you have a problem. Returning a 70-pound monitor via UPS is truly a pain. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars SONY MADE A BOO BOO WITH THIS ONE.
I PURCHASED THIS MONITOR 12/21/02 AND I AM VERY UNHAPPY WITH THIS MONITOR. THE COLORS ARE GOOD, BUT THE BRIGHTNESS AND CONTRAST SETTINGS ARE VERY POOR. I HAVE A BRAND NEW P4 COMPUTER, AND WHEN SETTING THE CONTRAST/BRIGHTNESS THE SCREEN ALWAYS HAS A CLOUDY LOOK, AND IN ORDER TO GET A CLEAR SETTING THE BRIGHTNESS HAS TO BE SET AT 50%, BUT THEN THE SETTING IS TO DARK. ANY BRIGHTER AND YOU WILL SEE MORE OF A CLOUD THAN ANYTHING ELSE, IN A DARK ROOM IT'S FAIR, TURN ON THE LIGHTS IN YOUR DEN OR OFFICE, AND IT'S ALL OVER, YOU WILL BE VERY UNHAPPY WITH THE SCREEN QUALITY . SAVE YOUR MONEY AND PAY A LITTLE EXTRA FOR A GOOD MONITOR. SONY REALLY MADE A BOO BOO BY PLACING IT'S NAME ON THIS PRODUCT! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best monitor and TV
I love the design. The remote which controls sound volume and the screen comes very handy. SONY's contrast ratio of 500 makes the best picture quality. Some other manufacturers may not be able to match it even with 800 ratio. I am able to use it for everything - as a computer monitor, TV, connect to VCR and DVD players, digital camcorder. Great for watching TV over the Internet. Also, after 5 months the store price only slightly increased which indicates to me that it's a quality product.

4-0 out of 5 stars great monitor
the picture on this monitor is great. everything is crisp and easily readable including text. The monitor itself is very bright (750 nits!) and displays all colors wll with no problems that i can see. All the connectors in the back make this a must have for any pc home theatre enthusiast, as the monitor connects directly to vcr's and dvd players (analog and s-video ports). Viewing images on the widescreen is great, as pages that require a scrollbar can now be viewed all at once. Not to mention how much difference a widescreen monitor makes for dvd's.

My only gripes with the monitor are that it does not have a dvi port, it doesnt tilt very much (just a little up and down) and the max resolution is 1280x768. But if you can look past these faults then this is a great monitor, especially with the 200 dollar rebate being offered at the moment. I found mine at a store known for its best buys, for 799, with a mail in rebate for 200 bux. So the monitor ends up costing me 600 bux, which isnt too bad for a 17 inch, widescreen no less

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent flat panel screen that doesn't break the bank.
I bought this with the sole intention of using it as a display for playing XBOX and PS2 games on. I find myself using it more and more every day for also watching DVD movies on.

The display is super, and having it in 16x9 mode is even better. Then you throw in HDTV capability and it totally rocks. Granted, it does not do true 1080i, but it will display that resolution.

I do have a few complaints though - For some reason Sony decided to put the manual on a CD. What, they could not spend the 10 cents to print up a stinkin' manual? It would also be nice if this thing had more inputs on it. I can't be the only one with more than one component video device to hook up. Junk the composite I say and give us another component in.

My next step for this thing is to get a HDTV tuner and see what that will do. ... Read more
