4-0 out of 5 stars Preview Of the new Apple Cinema Dsiplay
Pros-
1)great thin design
2)biggest HD LCD Display ever
3)Wonderful Picture Quality amazing!
4)has firewire inputs
5)Can hook up additional display WOW!

Cons-
1)Can't Be used With PC-(but the 20" and 23" can)
2)Need different Graphic card just to use it

? Why does the design serve as a problem to whom own a power book G4 and like to place it under their Display the New design prohibits this.

Bottom_____________
This is a great LCD display with amazing clearity, has Dule monitor support. but has to have all new graphics card and design proibits the place of your laptop to slide underneath the display.

OVER ALL preview rating a 9.5 of 10.00 ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tried 3 other; should have just bought this one!
After ruining my existing CRT monitor, I had to buy a replacement. Searched for low-cost, high-quality CRTs and found none (went to at least 6 stores). Brought home two CRTs and immediately took them back. Then decided to up the ante by looking at LCDs. Bought the Sony SDM-HS73 (based on reviews and store demo). Brought it home and immediately didn't like the text when plugged in my G4 -- very fuzzy and gave me a headache.

So I finally did what my wife and several friends suggested, spend the $700+ and buy the monitor I knew I really wanted/needed. Save yourself the search and buy the best to start.

Cons: price tag, only Mac compatible, must need ADC.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful for 1-2 years, then backlight fails.
I really wish that I could give this Apple product 5 stars, write some words of praise, and be on my way, but unfortunately I would feel uncomfortable recommending this monitor.

For two full years, this monitor was great. The resolution is generous, it is bright, and the fully digital ADC interface is perfect. Colors look good from a wide range of angles. The casing is smart and takes up little space, and it's easy to clean. The touch-sensitive power and brightness buttons are a nice touch that you expect from Apple.

Unfortunately, after two years, the top half of my display suddenly went dim, which is extremely annoying. I wouldn't post a negative review here just because I got unlucky. I am posting here because hundreds of customers have seen their displays fail within the first two years. Just look at Apple's discussion boards to see for yourself. (I can't post URLs in reviews.) Apple has not acknowledged that this is a widespread problem, and repair costs exceed that of a new display. It is also unclear as to whether or not this problem has been fixed in newer models. ... Amazon.com Product Description

The Apple Cinema Display series lets you focus your creative energies by keeping your desktop layout simple. Edit images and web pages up to two full pages at a time, or view multiple video streams or DVDs in full widescreen. Delivering up to 1,680 x 1,050-pixel resolution, the new 20-inch Apple Cinema Display offers twice the brightness, twice the sharpness, and twice the contrast ratio of the typical CRT display.

Wide viewing angles (170 degrees horizontal and vertical) enable easy placement in your workstation, and Apple's ColorSync technology allows you to create custom profiles to maintain consistent color onscreen and in print. Pixel response time is fast for seamless full-motion video. Although Apple does not provide a specific pixel response time (usually stated in milliseconds), it claims that the monitor is designed to respond quickly across the entire color spectrum, while most manufacturers report only the transition from black to white.

The pure digital interface delivers distortion-free images that never need adjusting, meaning that user controls are streamlined and kept to a minimum. Compatible with the Power Mac G4 desktop series or PowerBook G4 laptops, the 20-inch Apple Cinema Display does require Mac OS X v10.2 or higher and connects through the Apple Display Connector (ADC) cable for digital video, USB, and power. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Two USB conector, and a power switch
It is not jut the best Display I ever had see. I solve two other "problems" in Mac use:
It give tho more USB conectors and it have a switch to turn your Mac On.
If you can afford the price, I recomend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Monitor
I write from the college newspaper and we use this monitor to work on the lay-out for the paper each week. This monitor is great because the graphics are clear. We also run programs like Adobe Photoshop, and the graphics are awesome with that program as well. This monitor just works great. We haven't had any problems with it!

5-0 out of 5 stars i love it
i have had mine for 4 months - no problems -- I switch it between my G4 and G5, I'm going to get a Apple 17" soon for the G4. My wife doesn;t think I need both and announced ownership of the G4.

5-0 out of 5 stars postively the BEST monitor I've ever owned. Period.
Well, what else can this review say? My wife purchased the Apple Cinema Display (20") as an early birthday gift for me, and it arrived immaculately packed. The monitor was extremely easy to set-up, and, when compared to my CRT monitors, absolutely blows them away. The monitor displays crisp, colorful images and text is a breeze to read, even at the highest resolution.
There were no pixel problems - the screen is uniformly bright all around. It's also incredibly light -- well, it's definitely lighter when compared to the previous Sun 19" CRT I was using.

I spend a LOT of time in front of my Macintosh - and the ACD is definitely very easy on my eyes. Don't forget that there are two handy USB 1.1 ports on the back of the monitor -- I only recently discovered these -- but it's extremely convenient for those of you who have need to connect tablets, or other USB peripherals.

If you are seriously considering a good, high quality monitor to go with your Mac, look no further than the Apple Cinema Display. You will love it! Highly Recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic display -- the BEST thing for your Mac!
The quality of this 20" flat-panel display is already legendary (e.g., see MacIntouch.com). It looks great and the image is awesome. The real stunning thing about this monitor is how it will change how you feel about your computer. When you see your digital photos, your web pages and your DVDs on this diplay, you will be amazed. I had a very nice 17" CRT before this, and the Apple display just blows it out of the water: the images are brighter, sharper, cleaner, flatter... Having this much real estate (1680 x 1050) is amazing -- two full wide web pages side by side, or all your PhotoShop or Dreamweaver palettes open at once with room to spare...

It has literally changed the way I use my computer and really made me appreciate how great digital photos are. It's easy to show digital photos: with the big display and the wide viewing angle, people can gather around or see from across the room. And the images are far richer and brighter than they were on my CRT.

Another nice thing is how shallow the display is compared to a big fat CRT. I was able to move my desk all the way to the wall, making more space in my apartment! How many monitors can you say that about!?

I know it's expensive, but having bought **many** different computer setups over the past 10 years, I can say that this display is THE BEST component I have ever bought, and made the BIGGEST difference in how I enjoy and use my computer (Macintosh, of course!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This display is terrific!
I have one of these displays that I use at work, and think that it is the best thing since sliced bread! Apple has done an amazing job. The brightness and clarity are absolutely brilliant. I love that it has only the one cable, which carries power, video, and USB signal all in one. It makes for a nice clean work area, without all those ugly cords for power, video, and USB. But then again, that is no surprise, because you can tell that Apple truly cares about beauty, as well as performance. My hats off to Apple!!

5-0 out of 5 stars At least as good as anybody else's LCD
Let's see, there are too many cool things about this display. It costs about the same as any of the other premium LCD panels at this size (you can get a cheaper one, but you usually give up contrast, viewing angle, or speed). You get a single cable attachment to your Power Mac (carries video, power, and USB) which saves a lot of clutter. You get a pair of USB ports on the monitor which most others don't offer, despite it's convenience. And it just looks too darn cool on the desk next to the Power Mac.

Love it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm really happy
I just bought this flat-panel at the recently reduced price, and I'm totally happy with it. It's got a much smaller footprint than my old 17" monitor, it's bright, easy on the eyes, and a total breeze to set up.

I was a little leary of ordering such a "delicate" item online, but then realized Apple would have to ship it to me, just the same. It arrived fine, and without any dead pixels.

At the new, lower price, you really can't go wrong.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best flat panel monitor.
Flat panel momitors have two major advantages: the entire surface of the display is usable (thus a 17" flat panel monitor gives as large a working surface as a 19" CRT monitor) and they don't take up a lot of desk space as CRT monitors do. But most flat panel monitors have the disadvantage that their image is not quite as sharp as the best CRT monitors. This Apple monitor gives you the best of both types. It has the size advantages typical of flat panel monitors and it has the crisp, sharp image quality of the best CRT monitors. Yes, it's more expensive than the average flat panel monitor; but if you want CRT image quality with the size advantages of a flat panel monitor this is the one to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy-on-the-eyes
I was initially unsettled about the thought of buying a flat panel display because of the nature of the color critical work I am required to do; especially after seeing other flat panels in action at CompUSA, Circuit City, ect. Also, a flat panel seems more of a luxury than a need to get work finished. But, post-purchase, I could not be more satisfied with this display. Now, when I use any CRT display, it appears fuzzy and out of focus. I love my new display and it is well worth the cost! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Works with Windows XP
Just bought the 23" Apple Cinema display. It works at full res with a GeForce 4 4600 and Windows XP. It has no hardware brightness/contrast controls, but the NVidia driver has these controls + gamma. You can save configurations (such as nighttime, cloudy, office etc) and access them quickly from the taskbar. I have one dead pixel, but at this resolution it is hardly noticeable. You have to buy the DVI to ADC converter to get it to work with an NVidia GeForce card ($$$). There is no loss in quality when using the converter (it is all digital). Color quality and brightness are even across the entire screen. The pixel response is fast for an LCD, but not as quick as a CRT. Still, DVDs and flight simulator rarely exhibit ghosting. Definitely happy with my purchase.

5-0 out of 5 stars Read this review
This monitor meets all my expectations and more. For some of you that have been hesitant in getting this monitor because of the 1999.99 price tag, please consider my review.First of all, this monitor rocks! For those of you that have never seen it,you're missing out.The amount of desktop space is incredible.Text is vivid at its native resolution of 1920x1200.I'm using a PC with the GFX5900ultra.Setup was indeed flawless.Remember to buy the 99.99 ADC/DVI connector that gives the monitor power, converts DVI into ADC signal, and provides the USB port on the montitor connectivity. It totally sucks buying that POS but you need it for PC's.I ordered it from Amazon which is an excellent company. On time is the word.I received my monitor with about 3 bad pixels which isn't even a problem.
Now I know most of you are gamers and want to know about the pixel response times. As you arleady know, Apple doesn't give the specs for this which sucks again but from what I've noticed from playing games like Halo, it's really not noticeable. There is an overall feeling that it's not quite there; like a little somethings missing to make it butter smooth. But in no circumstance does this monitor lead to unplayable gaming. In Unreal 2 the ghosting effect was a bit more evident but it isn't bad.You have to understand that this is not a CRT.From what I've seen it beats the Samsung 213T like a maestro of meatflute.Unreal 2 worked great and having it set at max resolution was a real treat. You feel as if you were in the action because of this monitors large display. One strange thing I did notice in Unreal2 was that when I tried to change the brightness and contrast in the game, the screen started to show these strange colors that made the game unplayable. This problem was quickly resolved by just changing the gamma instead and tweaking around in the video software for brightness.ANother recent game that worked nearly flawlessly was Call of Duty. There was hardly any ghosting seen.Images were crisp and sharp with nice coloring.I highly recommend playing call of duty on this monitor because of the tremendous screen viewing area.Max Payne 2 worked almost at near excellence. At first I was dissapointed at the beginning scene where he was in the hospital because he wakes up dizzy which I thought was ghosting. This in fact was not ghosting but merely a visual effect imposed by the game to emphasize that he was dizzy.Again, the visuals were very sharp and clear. It just made me realize at how much of a good buy I really made by purchasing this monitor.I would seriously recommend this monitor for all you RTS gamers out there because you can see so much of the field.Hardcore FPS shooters won't be dissappointed with this display because of the above average response times and the sheer visual aspect of feeling like youre inside the game.
Movies were another concern.Movies still had that black border on the top and bottom but again it's not even a concern.Cinema performed well with miniscule amounts of ghosting. If you were to step back a little,it becomes unnoticeable.Again, this ghosting effect is so inconspicuous but I have to mention it so you know it's there. |-| For my observation,I used the movie Matrix Reloaded. The movie quality was gorgeous. It makes you wanna watch it again just because of the immersion factor of this monitor. One thing that I did notice was that the picture brightness was too high.It seems that this monitors blacks aren't as black as a CRT.In my amateur opinion the certain tones of black are grouped into the same palette on the display. This is a bit strange especially with the border being the same color as the picture at times.I've had to slide the contrast up and the brightness down to give it that theater feeling. But overall this monitor is excellent for movies.
The monitor saves so much deskspace and uses so little electricity that it's pleasant having it on.There is basically no heat given off.Definite plus.I leaned this monitor against the wall of my room with the rear leg hanging off and the two front on the table. There are rubberlike slide stoppers on the legs so it prevents it from sliding out from underneath.
In summary, buy this monitor if you have the money.Maybe you can buy this monitor and keep a small 15" or something to the side if you have the room.Trust me,you will enjoy this monitor immensely having it at home or work.Just remember to turn the brightness down some!

4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful hardware, but beware of compatibility with Windows
As a software developer with broadband internet and a TV tuner in my PC, I usually have a ridiculous number of things on screen at the same time. It's not uncommon to catch me writing code in one window, reading documentation in another, and watching TV in a third. Attaching two side-by-side LCD displays to my PC would manage this just fine, and probably more cheaply to boot.

But I also like to play games and watch movies, and for that, I wanted a single large panel. The only thing that fit the bill was the Apple display.

I purchased it after much ogling of showroom displays, and attached it to my PC's DVI port (with the help of Apple's DVI-to-ADC adapter). Windows XP detected the new monitor, my video card (ATI 9700 Pro AIW) recognized the higher resolutions, and I was instantly using Windows in crystal-clear 1920x1200 resolution, with no dead pixels.

There are a few negatives:

- The brightness does drop a bit at about 45 degrees, so the sides of the screen may appear darker than the center, but only if you sit really close to it, and are really paying attention.
- On a PC, the Power and Brightness buttons do nothing (except glow in a really cool way when touched). You'll have to use whatever display settings your video card driver provides for color, brightness, contrast, etc. As for turning it off, you'll have to either use Windows' screen-saver option for powering the display down after a few minutes, or unplug it.
- The two built-in USB ports don't suport USB 2.0.
- The ADC connector is proprietary to Apple computers (and only a few models - go figure), so you'll have to buy an adapter (either VGA-ADC or DVI-ADC) to hook it up to your PC.
- Even with my Apple-manufactured DVI-ADC adapter, I get a small amount of "static", especially on black backgrounds. My eyes are trained not to notice it anymore, but considering how pricey these are, it's annoying. UPDATE: I have since found a setting in the ATI configuration that fixes this ('Alternate DVI operational mode'). So this is no longer an issue.
- On my PC, the display doesn't show anything until Windows XP has started up. This means you can't see the BIOS diagnostics or boot menu. On forums, some people have reported this as a problem, and some say it works fine for them. If anything ever goes wrong with the boot process, I'm not sure what I'll do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent monitor
The screen itself is excellent. Especially since you can get a (...) rebate if u buy it together with an Apple G5 Powermac. Buy one you won't be disappointed. Also, Apple will release a 30" display in the Apple WWDC (...)

5-0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal product - my best purchase in 2003
I bought this monitor from Amazon almost a year ago. I am still amazed at how big it is - and I mean big in terms of usable screen space. I have it hooked up to my Intel based PC using a DVI video card. It is aesthetically beautiful as well which was a nice change of pace from my previous large screen monitors which were not much to look at. Everything looks good on this screen. High res digital photos, computer games, the 2+ full size Internet browsers that I can place side to side and still have room left on the screen. In short I am really glad I spent the money on it. ... Read more
