5-0 out of 5 stars Power house with a great price
This is the first time i bought something online that is so costly. So you can imagine i have done a good deal of research. Sony VAIO K23, indeed was THE BEST pick of them all, (I simply dont like DELL notebooks, all of them have a monotonous look). I got it in 2 days. I am very much impressed with its look and the screen ranks it above all laptops available till date. you also get a bunch of useful softwares with it. I was concerned about the weight, but its really not that heavy. So it was a good deal at least for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Addendum to earlier review, great Sony customer service
In my review, I initially complained about the error in making recovery discs. I mentioned that I found out the problem had already been mentioned online. After calling Sony customer service, they decided to mail me the recovery DVD free of charge even though it would normally cost money if bought online. The expedient and hassle free response to my problem proves how Sony excellent Sony support has been.

No other complaints!

Except one thing, if this laptop is too heavy for you, go to the gym and work out.

5-0 out of 5 stars ^^
I ordered this laptop not even 4 days ago and I didn't even pay for the shipping, as I checked their Super Saver shipping method. I received it, along with a few other things, within 4 days total!

The XBrite screen is great. It makes the colors SO vibrant and it makes my older laptop, also from sony, look pretty weak!

If you're not a super freak about wanting to burn DVD's, having the max processor and what not, then this laptop is definitely better than the K27, which is $400 more.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid notebook, but a few minor problems
The first thing I did after I turned on this laptop was create the recommended recovery kit, which required burning 8 CD's total. When I started burning Disc 6, a write error occurred. Initially I thought I did something wrong and was about to start over, but after looking on the Sony website I discovered that Sony already knew of this problem and was working to resolve it.

I am glad that Sony has already recognized this problem and I really do believe they're trying to fix it with a patch or whatever. Sony's reputation for quality laptops makes me confident that they will solve this problem.

As far as other characteristics go, this laptop has an amazingly clear and crisp screen. The XBRITE technology for the screen is definitely the wave of the future and I WOULDN'T get ANY laptop without it. Traditional TFT's are going to be obsolete soon, and as the XBRITE's become more prevalent, TFT's will be gone. There is such a significant difference in clarity that it is better than my stand alone LCD monitor. Fujitsu was the original developer of the XBRITE technology, and Sony licensed it. So be sure to check out Fujitsu's laptops as well, but I don't believe any other company's have this technology so far.

15.4" for a screen is quite large, and the fact that it's widescreen makes it even sweeter. Widescreen is cool especially for watching DVD movies. No more of those annoying black borders that surround a horizontal screen.

2.8GHz Pentium 4 is one of the fastest processors for any laptop available, and a 64MB Radeon graphics card is good for a laptop, and 512 DDR RAM is very good for a laptop as well.
THE POINT IS: all these wonderful features for such a GREAT PRICE and especially for a Sony VAIO, which generally is more expensive and Sony's reputation for laptops is very good.
-The full size keyboard is nice, not as cramped

DRAWBACKS:
-8 pounds is considered heavy for a laptop, although you would have to spend significantly more for a weaker, lighter Centrino laptop
-Battery consumption is slightly high due to it's incredible processing power.
However, I feel that battery consumption is a non-issue because most of the time when you're working, there are places to plug your laptop into a wall outlet.

However, I do not recommend this laptop if you're constantly moving around without being close to wall outlets or are too weak to carry this laptop. Although be forewarned, laptops are generally around 7 pounds anyway, so you won't find that much difference unless you spend significantly more. And even then, you'll get a much weaker system.

OVERALL:
The low price for such a powerful, quality laptop made by a highly reputable brand far outweighs the weight and battery consumption issues. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
Sony takes mobile computing to new heights with its impressive VAIO VGN-A290 Notebook PC. Much like extra-bulky, battery-draining "desktop replacement" notebooks, the VAIO VGN-A290 offers such amenities as a massive 17-inch widescreen display, a huge 100 GB hard drive and both CD and DVD burning. Yet the unit is far more power efficient than most desktop replacements and comparatively compact at just 8.6 lbs. Though it may cost a bit more than a standard notebook, the VAIO VGN-A290 is perfect for those who crave the next generation of portable computing today.

Sony Series A Display Sizes

The VGN-A290 features a 17" screen.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massivecollection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power ofthe entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-endCPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while othersare quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, emailand the like. The VAIO VGN-A250 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M 725processor operating at 1.6 GHz. This is one of three components that compriseIntel's efficient Centrino system (the others being a specialized Intelchipset and integrated wireless support). Centrino-equipped notebooksare generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile thantheir non-Centrino counterparts. This particular CPU is part of Intel'supgraded Pentium M lineup, featuring an amazing 2 MB of Level 2 cachefor extremely fast access to recently opened data and a fast 400 MHz frontside bus to help reduce data streaming bottlenecks. Though its raw clockspeed is not on par with that of a high-end Intel Pentium or AMD Athlon, this CPU will easily handle most every mobile task while at the same timeimproving battery life. Moreover, Sony has equipped the system with solidgraphics support and adequate memory -- two components vital to overallperformance.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keepfrequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) forfaster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitaskingand less strain on your hard drive. The VAIO VGN-A290 incorporates a startlingone GB of RAM. This is a massive allotment for a notebook and substantiallymore than that of most desktops as well. Thusly, users can expect superbmultitasking and virtually no slowdowns during ultra-complex tasks.

The VGN-A250features a 15.4" screen.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translatingvisual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (orgraphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon9200 with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. Dedicated video memory is far preferableto "shared" video memory (where the graphics controller appropriatesa portion of the main system memory), and this 64 MB allotment is consideredplenty for 3D graphics, midlevel 3D animation packages and many of the latest3D games.

Display
The VAIO VGN-A290 sports a 17-inch WUXGA display. This is a comparativelyenormous screen when compared to other notebook displays, and all themore spectacular given the unit's surprisingly compact size and lightweightmass. It's highly sophisticated too -- sporting Sony's new XBRITE Technologyfor better contrast and a brighter picture, and an exceedingly detailed1920 by 1200 maximum resolution. Furthermore, the widescreen format isperfectly suited to watching the Hollywood blockbusters you'll play onthe system's DVD-compatible optical drive.

Hard Disk
A 100 GB hard drive in a mobile computer many be a rarity, but that didn'tstop Sony. This level of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for thosewho need to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a generouslibrary of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Audio
The unit is equipped with integrated stereo speakers and audio amplifier.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM"drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW"drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important filesto long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM driveyou can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write"home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more thanseven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combinationof all of these tasks. This system features a DVD+R Double Layer/DVD±RWDrive, through which you can do all of the above. The drive also supports today'shot new double layer DVD format that effectively doubles the capacity of typicalDVDs.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 82-key keyboard and a standard electro-statictouch pad.

Connectivity and Expansion
The VAIO VGN-A290 features a bevy of connectivity facilities, including a 56Kmodem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TXEthernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated IntelPRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection (802.11b/g) for cord-free e-communicationat home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other keyamenities include high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such asexternal drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly usedfor quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and an AV Entertainment Dockwith high-end perks such as a TV Tuner and MPEG Encoder, VGA Monitor port, VHF/UHFTV port, S-Video in/out, DVI-D, Optical out, Line in (RCA Pin), Line out (RCAPin) and more. Suffice to say that no matter what sort of connections you wantto make, you can likely do it with the VAIO VGN-A290.

Operating System and Software
Sony will install Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, a varietyof productivity and business applications, and a broad range of digital photo, audio and video utilities.

Dimensions and Weight
Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten ortwelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuoustraveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements".On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables",super-miniaturized units that are typically less powerful than their largerbrethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably insidea large purse. Despite its impressively spacious display and cutting-edge capabilities, the VAIO VGN-A290 is not excessively heavy at just 8.6 lbs. It is larger thanaverage at 16 by 11 inches, though not nearly as bulky as most other similarlyequipped portables.

1-0 out of 5 stars GRX series PROBLEMS
am using a GRX580 and had the motherboard replaced when the laptop was under warranty and it has since broken again (will not boot if there is a memory chip in slot #2), but now is out of warranty. I have switched the memory chips around and it still will not boot, but when I leave slot 2 empty it will boot with either of the chips installed. I use a notebook fan/cooler religiously and take excellent care of my notebook.

I had to remove the second memory from my slot #2 and now it will boot up and work just fine, except it is SLOW due to loss of 256MB of auxiliary memory. I went the to following link and read about it in detail and found a shop that will solder the offending pin and return it to you for $150. I also read about a proposed class action lawsuit and a virtual petition to sign about making SONY aware of the problem.

http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449/

What can I do now??? I have researched the problem and have found it to be real and am upset that SONY hasn't recalled or fixed the problem. I queried the parts page on SONY and found that the motherboard to replace this one is not even carried and at another site it is $650.

WHAT DO I DO NOW???(...) WILL SONY STAND BY ITS PRODUCT AND HELP ME????(...)

2-0 out of 5 stars Huge screen, but very noisy and slow - bad deal.
I'm a magazine and book writer in the computer field and I needed a lap top to take with me on business trips and to do demonstrations of Virtual Human technology. I did my research and this looked like the baby I wanted. I was wrong! The performance is astoundingly slow for it's CPU and memory. The hard drive is rediculously loud and worst of all is that, shockingly, Sony has the worst attitude towards customer service of any company I've delt with in years. To top it off they never sent the [money] coupon refund that I qualified for. They also won't give you that 1 year waranty unless you read the fine print and register within 30 days!!! Try a Toshiba instead.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Desktop Replacement!
This full-featured notebook is excellent. I have now had the machine for four months, and love every bit of it. My last computers were Dells, and as IT manager, I used to spec Dells for our offices, but when I decided to give up my desktop for something a little more portable, SONY fit the bill. The GRX580 has a fast 1.7 P4 processor, the RAM is maxed out for you at 512, fast enough to keep several of the most demanding programs open simultaneously. Sony has this cooling system down to a science, the bottom of the machine is slightly warm to the touch, and I've had the notebook on for 24 hours straight with no overheating issues (unlike the IBM Thinkpad). CD burner is awesome and fast for a notebook, DVD is neat though I never have time to use it, and this screen - WOW! get a load of this 1200x1600 resolution 16.1 inch screen (it's comparable to the 17" CRT monitors).

On the downside, this thing weighs a ton! I know that the performance and the large screen requires additional weight, and this is unavoidable. One thing I really wish Sony provided here was at least one USB 2.0 port, we get three USB 1.1 ports, but with all these new peripherals, 2.0 is norm.

5-0 out of 5 stars San Diego User
I bought one of the first Sony VAIO computers put on the market several years ago and am very impressed with the amazing progress that Sony has made in its PC and Laptop products. This Laptop lives up to all expectations and with Windows XP has proven to be an intuitive and very first-time-user friendly computer. The brilliant 16" inch screen was a big draw because this laptop will be traveling all over the country to make presentations and staying in touch with home base. Very minor downsides to this unit are that it is a tad heavier and larger because of the big screen than other laptops and the other issue (common with many laptops) is getting used to the laptop keyboard which is set far back on the base and, with the VAIO, the touch sensative mousepad takes a bit of getting used to. Based on my experience with Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, Gateway and several others this Sony Laptop is the best product out there and the best deal for the money.

1-0 out of 5 stars I will never buy a sony computer again in my life
I bought Sony VAIO Laptop in 1999. Without any physical accident this computer died in the middle of word processing. So this product only lasted 1 year and 3 month. ... ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Though lacking a few of the higher-end features found in some Sony mobiles, the Vaio VX88 notebook is nevertheless an ideal choice for anyone who needs a truly portable solution for their everyday computing. At a mere 4.42 pounds, an inch high, and just 12.3 by 10.3 inches in diameter, the VX88 weighs significantly less than a typical briefcase and isn't much larger than aletter-size file folder. If you're always on the go, you'll appreciate the convenience such a small profile can bring.

Yet Sony has managed to fashion the featherweight VX88 with enough features for all but the most demanding applications. At the heart of the system lies an 850 MHz Mobile Intel Pentium III processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, 256 MB of SDRAM (expandable to 384 MB), and an 11 MB Intel 815EM graphics chip. While this level of performance won't be enough to satisfy die-hard 3-D gamers or power users, it's more than enough for standard notebook purposes.

The VX88 features a number of data storage, transfer, and backup alternatives, including a sizable 30 GB hard drive, a Memory Stick media slot for Memory Stick or MagicGate media, and an optional 3.5-inch USB floppy disk drive. Its external i.Link CD-RW/DVD combo drive (24x/8x/4x, 8x DVD) allows you to archive files, record and play music CDs, and enjoy DVD movies. If you opt for the latter, you'll be doing so through the system's surprisingly large 14.1-inch XGA (1,024 x 768) TFT display and built-in stereo speakers.

No matter where you are, the VX88 ensures you'll never feel out of touch. Its integrated V.90 modem offers low-speed Web and e-mail access, its10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet interface provides high-speed surfing and LAN connectivity, and its long-lasting, lithium-ion battery provides up to 5.5 hours from a single charge. You can even go wireless with the integrated IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN. Other amenities include an i.Link IEEE 1394 jack for fast data uploads from devices such as digital camcorders, two USB ports forplug-and-play peripherals, a VGA output for external monitors, and stereo headphone jack and microphone-in connections.

The unit's control center features a standard keyboard, a convenient center Jog Dial with back button, and an electrostatic touch pad. Pre-installed software includes the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, Quicken 2002 New User Edition, a bevy of audio-video software, and several helpful online tools. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect Laptop in a Perfect Package
I recently started attending a university and found myself needing a laptop because I didn't want to disturb my roommates late at night. I also wanted a computer I could take to the library and something I could take notes with in class. I finally settled on this laptop and I have not been disappointed so far.

This laptop has everything I need and nothing extra. It's sleek, lightweight package makes it easy to carry around in my backback without weighing it down and there's still plenty of space for a few textbooks and notebooks. The long battery life easily lasts me through a days worth of classes without having to recharge. The generous 14" screen provides plenty of viewable area for typing, which is especially important when doing papers at 3am and your eyes start to hurt. Smaller laptops with 12" screens might be nice and compact, but an extra 2 inches makes a world of difference on your eyes.

Besides all the usual USB ports and ethernet/modem port, this laptop also has built a in wireless LAN card. Because the campus I go to is wired for wireless LAN, I can check my email and surf the web without having to carry around a separate cat5 cable and find a port I can plug into. It's also a money saver because you don't need to buy one seperately.

The only downside to this machine would be it's 850MHz CPU, but it turns out that's more than enough for word processing and surfing the web. The other complaint I can think of is the resolution being capped at 1024x768. I wish the video card was a little better, but it's sufficient for my purposes.

This laptop will get a lot of double-looks from other students because it looks so nice and the extra space in your backpack can make a huge difference so your back will be thanking you at the end of the day.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great inexpensive notebook
I purchased my PCG-FXA32 nearly two years ago, when they were offering the free 256MB RAM upgrade. It's served me well. It does not feel sluggish compared to other notebooks running WinXP. The screen is crisp and clear -- there aren't many notebooks at this price with a 15" screen. Mine has been rock-solid, never crashing unless I've put it to sleep with my wi-fi pc card installed (hibernate works fine.)

Sony would like to sell this model as a video editing platform (it does include a FireWire port.) Their software works ok, but with only 15GB of hard drive space, an upgrade there is in order unless you're just making short videos for the web or something.

Overall, a good notebook, and a great value.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
Battery life: 30 minutes doing nothing
Tech support says this is normal!
What?
YES, they say this is normal. Now I Know they have no sense.
What can you possibly acomplish in 30 minutes on a laptop, assuming you are doing something productive. Forget about using this laptop in the airport.
The poorest, most sorry, stupid, neanderthal tech support on the planet.
Opposite of a Toyota product, wish they made a laptop.

4-0 out of 5 stars FXA32>>NOT TO BAD
I purchased this Laptop in December, I have had a couple before this and I decided to go with a Sony. The computer is pretty good, there is 2 things that I have problems with....

1. The processor does not know how fast it is...It ranges between 550 to 900mhz.

2. The mouse like to stall for a second or two..which is kinda annoying...

other than that this computer is not that bad...I am goin to try an Athlon or Pentium 3...in a Sony brand...but like I said before...this does the job O.K.

2-0 out of 5 stars VAIO are not good.
I live in Japan and I decided to buy a Japanese computer. I went to the local computer store and bought a VAIO notebook. The first night I got it I had problems. It froze often. I really didnt think much of it. It also would say "not enough memory....." I bought more memory and it said the same thing. I would have to turn it off then back on. Sometimes it wont turn off. Then, files started to disapear until it could even boot up. I sent it off to sony to get fixed, but when it came back it was still messed up.

My friend in college told me never buy a Sony computer I should have listened. He had a Sony and had problems with it. Sonys are eye candy for PCs. Buy an America comptuer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Product but Extremely Poor Technical Support
I bought an FXA-32 laptop for home use, and it is a very good product given the price. It comes with an impressive 15" display and graphics are fantastic. The speed of FXA-32 is O.K. But to my suprise, it runs much faster after I added in an extra 128MB RAM (total 256MB). Kinston is running a promotion for Sony and I got the extra 128MB almost free (just pay $9 shipping cost). The machine is very reliable, and I don't see any reason to buy a desk top computer for home use.

However, the customer service of Sony on FXA-32 is the worst I have ever seen (not even remotely close to Dell). They do not return your email!!! I tried more than 10 times to reach them by phone, even at odd hours. But not a single time that I can get through. Circuit City alwayse refers the problem to Sony, but that is a black hole after many tries.

Here is a list of things I found on my machine:
(1) It needs to download various updates from Sony Web site and install them one by one (an hour job with a good IP connection).
(2) Volume control can only be set through control penal.
(3) Brightness control is not found and disabled from keyboard.
(4) System reading on CPU speed is buggy. I got a wide range of readings from 564MHz to 900 MHz.
(5) The manual is poorly written and not helpful.
(6) On my machine, Microsoft Word is not properly installed, missing wordret.ini. But without support, there is no way to fix it.

These are all minor problems if there is proper technical support. But overall, it is a very good machine and I give it a 4 star. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed for notebook users who appreciate power and performance over miniaturization, the Sony Vaio PCG-GRV670 notebook is a powerful machine that’s just as at home on the road as on the desktop.

Measuring 1.8 by 14 by 11.8 inches and tipping the scales at 8.1 pounds (with one battery) or 8.7 pounds (with battery and optical drive), the Vaio GRV670 is not particularly petite. It is, however, very fast. Driven by a commanding 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, a 400 MHz bus, and 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1,024 MB), the unit is ready to blast through any computing situation. The only distinctions between the PCG-GRV670 and the pricier PCG-GRV680 are the size of the hard disk (40 GB vs. 60 GB) and the capabilities of the optical drive. This model features a combination DVD/CD-RW combo drive that allows you to burn and play audio CDs, watch movies, and back up data, whereas the PCG-GRV680 also supports DVD burning. Multimedia enthusiasts in particular will appreciate the system’s massive 16-inch SXGA TFT viewing screen (1,280 x 1,024 resolution) and integrated stereo speakers.

Other desirable amenities include a Memory Stick media slot, three USB ports, and a fast IEEE 1394 port for data transfers from peripherals such as digital camcorders. The unit delivers 1.5 to 3.5 hours of battery life with one battery attached and 3 to 7 hours with an optional second battery installed in its multipurpose bay.

Sony has pre-installed an impressive variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003 Standard, and a broad array of audio, video, and photo utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great 'Mobile Desktop'!
To bad Sony doesn't make available the 'Sony VAIO GRV670',really nice machine, was made to compete with the regular 'Desktop'. The 'GRV670' is like a 'German Panzer Tank',just rolls right through any 3-D game like 'Shogun: Total War' and 'Medieval: Total War'. Was thinking about a 'Dell' or 'Gateway',but heard the negative reviews, and stuck to 'Sony',fan is quiet, and at worst just gets warm, where as other 'laptops' get hot like a skillet, fry bacon and eggs. Have loaded both 'Shogun: Total War' and 'Medieval: Total War' games on 'Sony VAIO GRV670',works like a charm. I got this 'Sony Vaio GRV670' to do one thing, play 'shogun' and 'medieval',it performs 101%,no crashing,no freeze-ups,no problems period. I'm happy, and completely satisfied, thank you 'Sony'........

2-0 out of 5 stars Hung Out To Dry
I am an NCO in the US Army and am currently deployed to Kosovo. I purchased a Sony VAIO GRV670 notebook to write counseling's and awards for my soldiers; I also use it for recreational purposes, ie. games. My computer was running great for just over a month before I encountered problems with my display while trying to run the same 3D games that I had been playing all along. The problem got progressively worse as time went on. I have contacted Sony in regards to the problem and have done practically everything to resolve the issue but to no avail. Sony tells me that the computer is only guaranteed to run the software that comes with the computer and that they will do nothing for me. To their benefit, none of their software requires 3D or is particularly demanding on the video card; therefore it runs their simple programs just fine. So now I am stuck with a not completely functional computer, or rather, an overpriced word processor. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

If portability is paramount, very few notebooks can touch Sony’s Vaio PCG-VX89. Just 12.3 by 10.3 by 1.3 inches and a featherweight 4.42 pounds, the Vaio PCG-VX89 weighs significantly less than a typical briefcase and isn’t much larger than a letter-size file folder. Though not as versatile or as powerful as some Sony mobiles, the Vaio VX89 nevertheless offers slightly faster processing and CD speeds than its brother, the Vaio VX88, and is an ideal choice for light- to moderate-duty computing on the go.

At the heart of the system lies a 900 MHz Intel Pentium III processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, 256 MB of SDRAM memory (expandable to 512 MB), and a 32 MB (shared) Intel 815EM graphics chip. While this level of performance won’t be enough to satisfy power users or anyone who dabbles in CAD drawing programs or 3-D games, it’s more than enough for most standard notebook purposes.

The VX89 features a number of data storage, transfer, and backup alternatives, including a sizable 30 GB hard drive, a Memory Stick media slot, and an external i.Link CD-RW/DVD combo drive (24x/24x/10x CD-RW, 8x DVD), through which you can archive your files, record and play music CDs, and watch DVD movies. You’ll monitor your activities on the system’s surprisingly large 14.1-inch XGA TFT display and built-in stereo speakers.

4-0 out of 5 stars Noisy Hard Drive?
I purchased this computer and instantly loved it. But there's one glitch -- the hard drive makes a loud clicking noise. I called Sony tech support to find out if I had a defective unit or not. They were extremely helpful, believed the unit was defective and suggested I return the item for a new one, which I did. But the replacement unit also makes the same clicking noise. Which means two things -- either the store received an entire batch of computers that are defective or this is simply the way this notebook operates. I'm returning it. I absolutely love everything about this computer but the click click click is very annoying. I work with computers in my job, and I've never heard a laptop make this noise before.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid light weight notebook
This is my second Sony Vaio laptop as the first was incredibly durable and is still going strong after unbelievable abuse. I have been using the VX89 for about 2 months now and I am very impressed. I use it exclusively in a number of wireless networks and its performance is very impressive. It is the best
wireless laptop I have ever used. I really like everything about it, especially its size/weight. My other Vaio is a 8.5lb luggable. The only thing I would wish for is a 1.2 or 1.5 cpu as the 900, slow by todays standards, performs very well across all MS office applications. The battery life is also very good....I can count on just over 3 hours on a full charge. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Notebook for today!!!
I just purchased this Sony Vaio PCG-GR370 about 3 weeks ago, and everything is really great. This model is nice when you see or compare with other brand styles such as Compaq, Dell, or so on. Also, I upgraded memory to 512MB that makes me satisfied with its speed when I am running many programs in the same time. LCD is clear when you watch DVD or playing the Game. If you are looking for the portable laptop, this is the one of your choice for today and long terms.

5-0 out of 5 stars WONDERFULL ¡¡
This Vaio , my first notebook that it was bougth six weeks ago , has great performance (PIII ,1.1 Ghz, 30 HD ,etc.), nice design with 3 USB ports.
Maybe should have 512 mb of RAM , but it is not great problem.
I give 5 stars without doubt.

4-0 out of 5 stars "EXCELLENT MACHINE , BIT HEAVY".
I HAVE BEEN USING THE NOTEBOOK FOR ABOUT THREE MONTHS AND FOUND IT TO BE 'EXCELLENT' IN TERMS OF ITS OUTPUT.SONY COULD HAVE ADDED THE 'FLOPPY DRIVE' OR THE 'WIRELESS CONNECTION',THE BATTERY LID IS BIT LOOSE, BUT ANYWAY UPTILL NOW IT'S MONEY'S WORTH.OVERALL GOOD BLENDING OF' DESIGN' AND 'SOFTWARE'COLLECTIONS PRE-INSTALLED BY 'SONY'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Vaio ever?
I bought this cool notebook (...) about two weeks ago and so far, it is trouble free. Crispy, bright screen with powerful graphic card makes it even cooler. You can update the system (...) and they'll take care every problem you have. This notebook easily surpass the Dell and Compaq when it comes to same specs. I recommend this product to anyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Package
I bought this model about 1 week ago. It is a great system with a clear, bright and colorfull screen. I have XP Pro on it right now and it is flawless. The video card is pretty good too as it has 16 MB with 3D MDAC engine, I belive.

Fifa 2001 runs smooth on it, although to get fast non choppy play I have to cut the rendering in half. It still looks killer with the DDR video memory though.

I am sure that with an additionanl 256 (for a total of 512) MB of ram, it would perform much better. The 15 inch screen is impecable as sony always is.

Loaded with features it is an expensive piece of hardware, but well worth it depending on your profession. I am an Application developer and have put this baby to work with no problems.

I did notice one bad thing, but this could be the norm for laptops. It takes about 10 minutes to copy 500MB from one partition to the other. Weird.

---- UPDATE ----
The system comes pre loaded with Trend Micro's PC Cillin antivirus. The real time virus protection was causing the copy to slow down and even bring the computer to its knees. After turning the real time file scan off, it worked like a charm.

---- UPDATE ----
I added 256MB More to the laptop. Now it has 512MB of Ram and the system is working better and faster. It has not crashed on me once. The book runs very cool. It heats up just enough to let you know it is alive. I took out the hard drive and it is an IBM 4200 rpm drive. I had a Thinkpad T21 Pent III 750 with a 14' screen before. This Sony Vaio beats the heck out of the T21, let me tell you that right now. If you decide that this is your system, enjoy it!!

All in all I rate it a 4+

With the added Memory it is a 5 star product. :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a general purpose one, but definitely one of the best
After researching the notebook computer market, I've come to an conclusion that every brand has its own target user group and should not be compared simply by price, CPU speed, memory size, etc.

Don't get me wrong. Price and component info are important. However, in my opnion, the purpose and your application for using the notebook should be weighted equally as well before purchase a notebook.

It is quite obvious that sony has a different market point than other brands. Other brands seem to present more general purposes notebooks. Copmpare the bundled software you would understand the difference. Sony's notebooks (or desktops) seem to aim at those users who also use other sonys, e.g. digital camcorder, camera, handheld etc.

I purchased this notebook simply because I had a sony DV camcorder and wanted to do some video editing. I also plan to buy a high end sony digital camera. I've already have a P4 desktop with two 19" monitors. It only leaves me room for a notebook.

I've seen some negative user reviews about this notebook on other websites. Some complained about the bulky size, and some complained about the memory stick slot which they never used. Well, if you are a college student or you often have to carry notebook aroud, this might not be the notebook for you, because it is really big as a notebook. However, the 16.1" LCD screen is very bright and beautiful to stared at. The memory stick slot is a lifesaver for me, if you use memory stick you would understand what I mean.

This is a perfect notebook, but it seems to get opposite opinions among users. I think that might be becuase it is not meant for everyone. Don't just buy it because it is a sony, as sony means expensive, I figure sony usually cost about 20% more than comparable others.

The only complaint I have about this notebook is the memory size, only 256 MB. However, there is a promotion to get a free 256 MB upgrade now. So, if you decide to get this notebook, remember to get the free memony upgrade offer as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The last laptop of its kind you'll ever own
The Sony Vaio GRX 560 is very well constructed. The 16" screen is very sturdy, the keyboard feels crisp not cheap and plastic like a lot of laptops. You might think a 16" screen is too large but it makes a very noticeable difference from a 15" screen, especially if you use the 1600x1200 resolution. The 1.6ghz P4M and 32mb VRAM are enough to handle games such as Medal of Honor, JKII, etc. Also it comes with Word 2002 and some video and multimedia editing software...

I couldn't be more satisfied with this laptop, I think you'll feel the same, go try it out at a computer store for yourself. I seriously think you'll never get another laptop like this again, Sony has created the best of its kind. The only thing that could surpass it would be a whole new type of laptop with detachable or flexible display or something like that.

There was only 1 glitch when I got it - the hard drive made a loud clicking sound about every second. Turned out the processor was turning on and off the drive in order to conserve power.
You can download the "Intel Application Accelerator" from Intel to fix that.

To answer the only negative comments I remember seeing about the new Sony VAIOs:
1. "The keys are loud when you type." Me personally I like the feedback, its not so loud to be annoying. The keyboard feels very solid.
2. "The arrow keys are small." Sony made the up and down arrow keys slightly narrower, but I have not even noticed the difference.
3. "Heavy laptop, AC adapter too big." The AC adapter is really not abnormally large. Yes the laptop is heavier, but I used to carry a powerbook across campus everyday that was 14 pounds. If the weight is an issue I'd recommend a backpack carrying case or else buying a weaker and tinier ultralight laptop instead.
4. "No USB 2.0." It does have firewire, buy a firewire-compatible external hard drive for backups. Or get a USB 2.0 PC card... Or just hook up the USB 2.0 device to your USB port if the data speed is not such an issue (such as with backups).

Here are my only cons about this laptop:
1. Doesn't fit in most standard laptop cases, you'll likely have to buy a new case.
2. No 64mb VRAM option, but again 32mb is enough.
3. No integrated wireless. Wireless PC cards are not too expensive but it would be nice to have it incorporated inside the computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome laptop-----big screen 16.1" UXGA
When I got the laptop and turned it on for the first time, it was loading windows XP home for the first time, and it took a long time to load, and the hard drive was going pretty loud. So I was kind of disappointed at that time. However, after I cleaned up everything, got windows XP Pro on it, it then ran smoothly, just as fine and fast as my P4 1.8 GHz desktop.

Pros: 1. Gigantic 16.1 inch screen @ 1600X1200, awesome, beautiful.

2. P4-M 1.6 GHz, fast and low heat.

3. Fast CDRW at 16X and 10X.

Cons: 1. No hot keys except the function keys.

2. 256MB ram not enough for gamers (but expandable to 512).

3. ATI M Radeon 7500 w/ 32MB DDR video card is not enough to handle intense games.

4. No PS/2 port for mouse or external keyboard. Have to buy a port replicator.

5. USB, not USB 2.0.

6. Big screen, big size.

On the other hand, 30GB notebook hard drive at 4200 RPM is clearly not fast enough, but most laptop uses it, so it's not about the 560.

Overall, a great desktop replacement. I love the pros more than its cons... A great product at that price!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Sony support awful
Since I bought this notebook I am in trouble. The computer is slow and two months later the LCD screen did not worked. I claim for repair under warranty to Sony and I had to ship the computer to San Diego,California paying all shipment expenses. They knew what the problem with the LCD was before they received and now they do not want to repair it under the warranty. What kind of computer is this, that I bought it in September as a new model and now is discontinued.

5-0 out of 5 stars awesome computer
This thing put me in the hole 2500 bucks with insurance, but id have to say it was worth it. One thing that is very underated on this computer is the sound is soooooo goood. Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Vaio PCG-NV290 is a great choice for a replacement for a desktop PC for those who want the option of mobility. It features a 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, battery-saving 2.0 GHz Mobile Pentium 4 processor, large 15-inch screen, 32 MB of allocated video RAM, and a DVD-RW drive.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 40 GB IDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.
  • Processor: The 2.0 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor (which is at the low end for this offering) will not cater to your need for speed, but it is serviceable for the budget minded. Thanks to its Mobile features, the processor can save power when its not needed, thus conserving battery life. It has a front-side bus (FSB) of 400 MHz and a 512 KB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It comes equipped with a combo DVD-RW/CD-RW drive (which is not compatible with DVD+R/RW discs). The CD-RW drive has 16x write, 10x rewrite, and 24x read speeds. The DVD-RW has an 8x playback speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Sound and Graphics
This notebook features integrated audio and video/graphics cards (with 32 MB of installed video RAM). The 15-inch XGA TFT active matrix LCD has a native 1400 x 1050 pixel display. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This PCG-NV290 model model has an integrated wireless LAN that connects using the 802.11b wireless standard, which is not exactly in step with the latest in wireless networking--54g, or 802.11g. You get a decent--but rather outdated--offering of connectivity options:

  • 3 USB 1.1 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 serial port
  • 1 parallel port
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Memory Stick slot (Memory Stick Pro compatible)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also has a removable 1.44 MB, 3.5-inch USB floppy drive.

Preloaded System and Software
This PCG-NV170P notebook comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It also is loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: PictureGear Studio (digital photo), SonicStage (digital music), and DVgate (digital video). Other preloaded software includes Microsoft Money and Encarta,InterVideo WinDVD, and Norton Internet Security Center (with 90-day subscription).

Dimensions and Weight
The PCG-NV290 weighs a hefty 14.5 pounds, and it's best used as an occasional mobile laptop, but mainly as a desktop replacement. (Dimensions are not available for this model.)

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers an average battery life range of 1.5 hours (depending on usage).

What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony Vaio PCG-NV290 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It's backed by a 1-year warranty for parts and labor, and 90 days of phone support. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Stylish and utterly professional, the Sony Vaio PCG-V505EXP is a lightweight notebook PC--only 4.39 pounds--that's geared for business and mobility. Thanks to the Intel Centrino processor, its enhanced battery life will keep you productive even on long flights. It features a built-in 54g wireless LAN (802.11g), a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive, spacious 60 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a good range of pre-installed Sony digital media software.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: Though not world-beating in size, the 60 GB enhanced-IDE hard drive (4200 RPM) offers more than enough storage capacity for road warriors.
  • Processor: The 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor is near the top of the speed range compared with other Centrino notebooks (with current speed topping out at 1.7 GHz). Because of itsdesign, the Intel Pentium M gets more done per clock tick than a Mobile Intel Pentium 4, thus providing the discrepancy in GHz measurement (i.e., 1.7 versus 3.2). The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max. It also has a 512 KB L2 cache and a 400 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed.
  • Memory: The PCG-V505EXP comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 2.05 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It comes equipped with a combo DVD/CD-RW drive, which enables you to play DVD-ROM discs and DVD movies as well as burn data and record music to CD discs. The CD-RW drive has 24x write, 10x rewrite, and 24x read speeds.
  • Keyboard & Mouse:
Sound and Graphics
The installed ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 IGP video/graphics card is a relatively strong 3-D graphics renderer, and it has 32 MB of shared video memory. The 12.1-inch XGA TFT active matrix LCD has a native 1024 x 768 pixel display. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The PCG-V505EXP has an Intel Pro-Wireless 2200BG integrated wireless LAN that connects using the 802.11g wireless standard (which is compatible with the more widespread 802.11b and offers faster data transmission rates). You get a decent--but not overpowering--offering of connectivity options, including both high-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire:

  • 2 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 RGB monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Memory Stick slot (Memory Stick Pro compatible)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The PCG-V505EXP comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). 2-0 out of 5 stars Nice machine except for the erratic random keyboard errors
This is a nice package with wireless and nice compact design and long battery life. The memory and disk are very good, and the processor quite OK for most purposes. The keyboard is a little cramped, and the speakers give sound no better than a mobile phone, which is puzzling for a Sony device.

I am happy with my choice EXCEPT that the keyboard induces random jumps and characters and unfortunately I have to spend about 30% of my typing time correcting the errors and adjusting the cursor.

I searched on the web and found, sadly, that this is a problem experienced by many people with this Sony keyboard. And it appears that trying to get the problem solved is even more frustrating than the problem. So if you need series keying than this machine is quite useless.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great laptop, but watch out for OS and Software
The V505 is highly portable, and pretty powerful. However, don't believe the specs until you open the box. It does NOT come with Works or Norton! It comes with trial versions of both, and then you'll pay through the nose for the software. Better to load 2002-2004 software if you have it on another computer. Perfectly legit if you're the licensed user.

Then, expect problems with Norton. I like Norton Anti-Virus the best of all such software, but their firewall and security system in the pre-loaded software ties up the computer with warnings, notes, hints, and more warnings.

If you pay no attention to anything else I say, pay attention to this: DO NOT LOAD PRE-2002 SOFTWARE on any system with XP or XP Home. I loaded a Win98 WordPerfect Suite on this; it "crashed" and had to restore the entire system. The same thing happens with Word or Works, but then I still run some pre-SE software. Three days of work down the drain.

My V505EX came with no CD and no books, just a Quick Start booklet. If you've never worked with XP before, get a copy of The Complete Reference (Osborne Books) or the Dummies book along with the computer.

Last, and maybe most important if you're considering any Vaio, Sony's warranty is one year parts, labor, and even software advice. And their service has been great! Better than Dell in Dell's better days (i.e., 1984-2002). I'm so impressed that I think I might replace my desktop with a Sony PC, and that after 8 Dells, and one HP.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prefect Notebook
This is a great small notebook. I did the research for 3 month & this is the best one I could found. The different between V505EX And V505EXP is Wireless G and OS is Window XP Pro (The spec on Amazon.com is Wrong ,V505EXP is not Window XP home). So u dont have to upgrade any more, and the price is only $100 different.I think is better to pick up V505EXP than V505EX.
This notebook has everything u need. The style is Cool, the Weight is light & Speed is fast(especilly for Gameing....Cuz it has ATI 92oo Graphic Card 32Mb build in,not randeon 16mb). If u have Wiless G router, u can have up to 54mb transfer rate. I used to have Sony TR3A, that is a very nice notebook, too. but the problem is TR3a is too slow , And the Graphic card dont support DirectX 9. a lot game cant play.SO i move to V505EXP. I dont know why the other reviewer (the one review V505EX) has wireless problem. But My V505EXP dont have that problem at all.
When I try to buy the notebook I dont really care about price. However , this one is not expensive( compare to Z Series & TR series) and u will get more than those model. (Ps. Dont buy Z series cus the graphic card only has 16 mb...super slow. and the notebook's body is vry easy to get duty) The only thing I dont really like is this notebook is not silver color( I love Silver ) other wirse, this notebook is prefect for me ... Amazon.com Product Description

If you crave the ultimate in computing portability, Sony's Vaio PCG-SRX99 notebook may very well be the answer. Tipping the scales at a featherweight 2.76 pounds, the SRX99 is no heavier than a typical purse. Just 1.1 by 10.2 by 7.7 inches, it's slim enough to fit inside one. But make no mistake: Sony's smallest notebook is as powerful as it is convenient.

Driving the SRX99 is the capable yet cost-effective Intel Pentium III-M processor, featuring an 850 MHz clock speed and a generous 512 KB of Level 2 cache for enhanced performance during complex computing situations. Sony has paired this processor with 256 MB of RAM--more than enough to minimize the workload on the integrated 20 GB hard drive--and an 11 MB Intel 815EM graphics chip. They've also equipped the unit with a number of other luxuries not often found on notebooks, including an internal CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can play and record CDs and watch movies. While the SRX99 won't efficiently run today's most demanding 3-D games and programs, it will quite easily handle most typical business and entertainment applications.

When you open the system's ultrathin magnesium alloy case, you'll find several surprisingly sophisticated amenities inside, including an 87-key keyboard, an electrostatic touch pad and Jog Dial control, a pair of stereo speakers, and a reasonably sized 10.4-inch (1,024 x 768) TFT LCD viewing screen. Sony has included a number of device and connectivity ports on either side, including a MagicGate Memory Stick slot for easy transfer of digital images and other data, an IEEE 1394 interface for high-speed digital video, microphone/audio-in and headphone-out ports, a PC card slot, a USB port for plug-and-play peripherals, and a 2.4 GHz 802.11b connect interface for wireless LAN. An integrated V.90 modem provides low-speed Internet access, and a 10/100 Ethernet port permits high-speed surfing.

Your SRX99 will arrive with pre-installed versions of the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, Quicken 2002, Microsoft Word 2002, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and a broad range of audio, video, and still-image tools and utilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of my best purchases!
I have had this notebook for over a year and a half. It is reliable, practical, and cost effective. The size is perfect for mobility and the built-in wireless has been one of its best features. My only complaint is that the hard-drive is slow. I am thinking of upgrading the hard-drive to give it some new life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally a practical notebook
This notebook is small and light, has built-in wireless with PCMCIA slot to spare, and has a good keyboard. What more could you want? The speed is more than adequate. I have had this for about a month and a half, and I am very pleased with it. Get an extra charger on ebay, so you can have one at work and one at home. I am getting about 4.5hrs battery life (thats without the DVD drive). I did try watching Lord of the Rings and it looked great! It didn't seem to affect battery life too much.

For you Linux nuts, I am dual booting with XP. Here is what you can expect: You can install redhat if you have a USB floppy drive []. The firewire CDROM is not yet recognized by Linux. Redhat 8.0 works well, but you have to install a newer kernel or patch the 2.4.18 kernel to get the wireless card to work. The patch is needed to deal with the ACPI IRQ sharing. Suse Linux wouldn't even install! The boot floppy loads half way and hangs. hmmm.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great "true" laptop
This little jewel of a computer is really a laptop. It's light weight and built in wireless (2.4 ghz) make it great to use on the go or just around the house with a wireless network. I got the extended battery and get 6-8 hours of use on one charge! Wish DVD/cdrw were built in but it is not. At least it comes witht the unit (Japanese version does not. I shopped a long time before buying this unit. Considered smaller picturebook but hated that little pointer stick. Touch pad works much beteer on the srx99. I also got the 384 Meg Ram version. Wish HD was larger (only 20 Gigs and it is partitioned as ttwo 10 gigs)
Two thumbs up from Me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sony Vaio SRX99 - highly mobile, few compromises
The Sony Vaio SRX99 is the latest in a line of ultraportable sub-notebook computers produced by the multimedia giant. It is very comfortable in the hand (the battery side of the clamshell is wider than the front, and when closed, this provides a very convenient place to hold the computer). The speed is very acceptable - not desktop replacement, but good enough for DVD viewing, word processing, and simple image and movie editing. The battery life is exceptional - 3-4 hours with the default battery. Typing on the 80% keyboard is surprisingly accurate (this review was typed on the Vaio SRX-99). The touchpad is responsive, and the built-in jog wheel is very useful and highly configurable. The external DVD-ROM/CDRW drive is very cute, but works well.

One feature which really stands out is the clamshell itself. Unlike most notebook computers, which open only about 90-100 degrees, this one can open nearly 180 degrees, which provides a huge advantage in selecting viewing angles.

It comes with a fairly large pile of software, including Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and even Everquest (although I wouldn't recommend this as a gaming computer). There are full restore CDs for both the OS and the bundled software.

It does compromise a bit on external connections compared with a desktop replacement, and the hard drive is a bit cramped at 20GB, but all in all, it's highly recommended for people for whom mobility is the ultimate requirement.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good travel companion
Highlights for this little computer:
Small Footprint - Even in economy with the passenger ahead of you leaned back so far you are certain they are sitting in your seat, this computer still has ample room for seeing the display and utilizing the keyboard.
Lightweight - I haven't actually weighed it but I do know that the whole system with battery weighs the same as one of the batteries from my previous laptop (2 yr old Dell). Its weight and size make it very convenient for carrying to meetings and on the airplane.
Respectable Battery Life - Stock battery that ships with this unit gets 3+ hours with Wireless LAN enabled and 4+ hours with Wireless disabled. I used it during a east to west coast flight and I actually had to stop using it because of preparation for landing rather than the battery running out of charge.

Low Points:
Screen Size - The ~10" screen keeps the footprint down but it does cause me to squint sometimes.
Keyboard - Two things I really dislike about the keyboard: the right shift key is very small (I miss it often during touch typing)and the Fn key must be used in combination with the arrow keys for PgUp, PgDown, Home, and End functionality.

Note about Amazon.com's description of the SRX99: Their review indicates that it has an internal CD/DVD drive. This is not true. It actually comes with an external drive. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars R505EL is all good
I did my homework before I bought my first "lap top". I am very happy with the Sony R505EL. I bring and use it at the hospital everyday.

Pros:
-inexpensive (comparing it to other companies with equal specs)
-highly portable (do not need the 3.5 or
