No other complaints! Except one thing, if this laptop is too heavy for you, go to the gym and work out.
The XBrite screen is great. It makes the colors SO vibrant and it makes my older laptop, also from sony, look pretty weak! If you're not a super freak about wanting to burn DVD's, having the max processor and what not, then this laptop is definitely better than the K27, which is $400 more.
I am glad that Sony has already recognized this problem and I really do believe they're trying to fix it with a patch or whatever. Sony's reputation for quality laptops makes me confident that they will solve this problem. As far as other characteristics go, this laptop has an amazingly clear and crisp screen. The XBRITE technology for the screen is definitely the wave of the future and I WOULDN'T get ANY laptop without it. Traditional TFT's are going to be obsolete soon, and as the XBRITE's become more prevalent, TFT's will be gone. There is such a significant difference in clarity that it is better than my stand alone LCD monitor. Fujitsu was the original developer of the XBRITE technology, and Sony licensed it. So be sure to check out Fujitsu's laptops as well, but I don't believe any other company's have this technology so far. 15.4" for a screen is quite large, and the fact that it's widescreen makes it even sweeter. Widescreen is cool especially for watching DVD movies. No more of those annoying black borders that surround a horizontal screen. 2.8GHz Pentium 4 is one of the fastest processors for any laptop available, and a 64MB Radeon graphics card is good for a laptop, and 512 DDR RAM is very good for a laptop as well. DRAWBACKS: However, I do not recommend this laptop if you're constantly moving around without being close to wall outlets or are too weak to carry this laptop. Although be forewarned, laptops are generally around 7 pounds anyway, so you won't find that much difference unless you spend significantly more. And even then, you'll get a much weaker system. I had to remove the second memory from my slot #2 and now it will boot up and work just fine, except it is SLOW due to loss of 256MB of auxiliary memory. I went the to following link and read about it in detail and found a shop that will solder the offending pin and return it to you for $150. I also read about a proposed class action lawsuit and a virtual petition to sign about making SONY aware of the problem. http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/5449/ What can I do now??? I have researched the problem and have found it to be real and am upset that SONY hasn't recalled or fixed the problem. I queried the parts page on SONY and found that the motherboard to replace this one is not even carried and at another site it is $650. WHAT DO I DO NOW???(...) WILL SONY STAND BY ITS PRODUCT AND HELP ME????(...)
On the downside, this thing weighs a ton! I know that the performance and the large screen requires additional weight, and this is unavoidable. One thing I really wish Sony provided here was at least one USB 2.0 port, we get three USB 1.1 ports, but with all these new peripherals, 2.0 is norm.

Amazon.com Product Description Yet Sony has managed to fashion the featherweight VX88 with enough features for all but the most demanding applications. At the heart of the system lies an 850 MHz Mobile Intel Pentium III processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, 256 MB of SDRAM (expandable to 384 MB), and an 11 MB Intel 815EM graphics chip. While this level of performance won't be enough to satisfy die-hard 3-D gamers or power users, it's more than enough for standard notebook purposes. The VX88 features a number of data storage, transfer, and backup alternatives, including a sizable 30 GB hard drive, a Memory Stick media slot for Memory Stick or MagicGate media, and an optional 3.5-inch USB floppy disk drive. Its external i.Link CD-RW/DVD combo drive (24x/8x/4x, 8x DVD) allows you to archive files, record and play music CDs, and enjoy DVD movies. If you opt for the latter, you'll be doing so through the system's surprisingly large 14.1-inch XGA (1,024 x 768) TFT display and built-in stereo speakers. No matter where you are, the VX88 ensures you'll never feel out of touch. Its integrated V.90 modem offers low-speed Web and e-mail access, its10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet interface provides high-speed surfing and LAN connectivity, and its long-lasting, lithium-ion battery provides up to 5.5 hours from a single charge. You can even go wireless with the integrated IEEE 802.11b Wireless LAN. Other amenities include an i.Link IEEE 1394 jack for fast data uploads from devices such as digital camcorders, two USB ports forplug-and-play peripherals, a VGA output for external monitors, and stereo headphone jack and microphone-in connections. The unit's control center features a standard keyboard, a convenient center Jog Dial with back button, and an electrostatic touch pad. Pre-installed software includes the Microsoft Windows XP operating system, Quicken 2002 New User Edition, a bevy of audio-video software, and several helpful online tools. Reviews (2)
This laptop has everything I need and nothing extra. It's sleek, lightweight package makes it easy to carry around in my backback without weighing it down and there's still plenty of space for a few textbooks and notebooks. The long battery life easily lasts me through a days worth of classes without having to recharge. The generous 14" screen provides plenty of viewable area for typing, which is especially important when doing papers at 3am and your eyes start to hurt. Smaller laptops with 12" screens might be nice and compact, but an extra 2 inches makes a world of difference on your eyes. Besides all the usual USB ports and ethernet/modem port, this laptop also has built a in wireless LAN card. Because the campus I go to is wired for wireless LAN, I can check my email and surf the web without having to carry around a separate cat5 cable and find a port I can plug into. It's also a money saver because you don't need to buy one seperately. The only downside to this machine would be it's 850MHz CPU, but it turns out that's more than enough for word processing and surfing the web. The other complaint I can think of is the resolution being capped at 1024x768. I wish the video card was a little better, but it's sufficient for my purposes. This laptop will get a lot of double-looks from other students because it looks so nice and the extra space in your backpack can make a huge difference so your back will be thanking you at the end of the day.

Sony would like to sell this model as a video editing platform (it does include a FireWire port.) Their software works ok, but with only 15GB of hard drive space, an upgrade there is in order unless you're just making short videos for the web or something. Overall, a good notebook, and a great value.
1. The processor does not know how fast it is...It ranges between 550 to 900mhz. 2. The mouse like to stall for a second or two..which is kinda annoying... other than that this computer is not that bad...I am goin to try an Athlon or Pentium 3...in a Sony brand...but like I said before...this does the job O.K.
My friend in college told me never buy a Sony computer I should have listened. He had a Sony and had problems with it. Sonys are eye candy for PCs. Buy an America comptuer.
However, the customer service of Sony on FXA-32 is the worst I have ever seen (not even remotely close to Dell). They do not return your email!!! I tried more than 10 times to reach them by phone, even at odd hours. But not a single time that I can get through. Circuit City alwayse refers the problem to Sony, but that is a black hole after many tries. Here is a list of things I found on my machine: These are all minor problems if there is proper technical support. But overall, it is a very good machine and I give it a 4 star. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description Measuring 1.8 by 14 by 11.8 inches and tipping the scales at 8.1 pounds (with one battery) or 8.7 pounds (with battery and optical drive), the Vaio GRV670 is not particularly petite. It is, however, very fast. Driven by a commanding 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, a 400 MHz bus, and 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1,024 MB), the unit is ready to blast through any computing situation. Sony has added an impressive 64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video acceleration chipset to ensure youll make quick work of most graphics-intensive 3-D applications and all but the most demanding 3-D games. The only distinctions between the PCG-GRV670 and the pricier PCG-GRV680 are the size of the hard disk (40 GB vs. 60 GB) and the capabilities of the optical drive. This model features a combination DVD/CD-RW combo drive that allows you to burn and play audio CDs, watch movies, and back up data, whereas the PCG-GRV680 also supports DVD burning. Multimedia enthusiasts in particular will appreciate the systems massive 16-inch SXGA TFT viewing screen (1,280 x 1,024 resolution) and integrated stereo speakers. Other desirable amenities include a Memory Stick media slot, three USB ports, and a fast IEEE 1394 port for data transfers from peripherals such as digital camcorders. The unit delivers 1.5 to 3.5 hours of battery life with one battery attached and 3 to 7 hours with an optional second battery installed in its multipurpose bay. Sony has pre-installed an impressive variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003 Standard, and a broad array of audio, video, and photo utilities. Fifa 2001 runs smooth on it, although to get fast non choppy play I have to cut the rendering in half. It still looks killer with the DDR video memory though. I am sure that with an additionanl 256 (for a total of 512) MB of ram, it would perform much better. The 15 inch screen is impecable as sony always is. Loaded with features it is an expensive piece of hardware, but well worth it depending on your profession. I am an Application developer and have put this baby to work with no problems. I did notice one bad thing, but this could be the norm for laptops. It takes about 10 minutes to copy 500MB from one partition to the other. Weird. ---- UPDATE ---- ---- UPDATE ---- All in all I rate it a 4+ With the added Memory it is a 5 star product. :) ... Read more

Don't get me wrong. Price and component info are important. However, in my opnion, the purpose and your application for using the notebook should be weighted equally as well before purchase a notebook. It is quite obvious that sony has a different market point than other brands. Other brands seem to present more general purposes notebooks. Copmpare the bundled software you would understand the difference. Sony's notebooks (or desktops) seem to aim at those users who also use other sonys, e.g. digital camcorder, camera, handheld etc. I purchased this notebook simply because I had a sony DV camcorder and wanted to do some video editing. I also plan to buy a high end sony digital camera. I've already have a P4 desktop with two 19" monitors. It only leaves me room for a notebook. I've seen some negative user reviews about this notebook on other websites. Some complained about the bulky size, and some complained about the memory stick slot which they never used. Well, if you are a college student or you often have to carry notebook aroud, this might not be the notebook for you, because it is really big as a notebook. However, the 16.1" LCD screen is very bright and beautiful to stared at. The memory stick slot is a lifesaver for me, if you use memory stick you would understand what I mean. This is a perfect notebook, but it seems to get opposite opinions among users. I think that might be becuase it is not meant for everyone. Don't just buy it because it is a sony, as sony means expensive, I figure sony usually cost about 20% more than comparable others. The only complaint I have about this notebook is the memory size, only 256 MB. However, there is a promotion to get a free 256 MB upgrade now. So, if you decide to get this notebook, remember to get the free memony upgrade offer as well.
I couldn't be more satisfied with this laptop, I think you'll feel the same, go try it out at a computer store for yourself. I seriously think you'll never get another laptop like this again, Sony has created the best of its kind. The only thing that could surpass it would be a whole new type of laptop with detachable or flexible display or something like that. There was only 1 glitch when I got it - the hard drive made a loud clicking sound about every second. Turned out the processor was turning on and off the drive in order to conserve power. To answer the only negative comments I remember seeing about the new Sony VAIOs: Here are my only cons about this laptop:
Overall, a great desktop replacement. I love the pros more than its cons... A great product at that price!!

I am happy with my choice EXCEPT that the keyboard induces random jumps and characters and unfortunately I have to spend about 30% of my typing time correcting the errors and adjusting the cursor. I searched on the web and found, sadly, that this is a problem experienced by many people with this Sony keyboard. And it appears that trying to get the problem solved is even more frustrating than the problem. So if you need series keying than this machine is quite useless.
Then, expect problems with Norton. I like Norton Anti-Virus the best of all such software, but their firewall and security system in the pre-loaded software ties up the computer with warnings, notes, hints, and more warnings. If you pay no attention to anything else I say, pay attention to this: DO NOT LOAD PRE-2002 SOFTWARE on any system with XP or XP Home. I loaded a Win98 WordPerfect Suite on this; it "crashed" and had to restore the entire system. The same thing happens with Word or Works, but then I still run some pre-SE software. Three days of work down the drain. My V505EX came with no CD and no books, just a Quick Start booklet. If you've never worked with XP before, get a copy of The Complete Reference (Osborne Books) or the Dummies book along with the computer. Last, and maybe most important if you're considering any Vaio, Sony's warranty is one year parts, labor, and even software advice. And their service has been great! Better than Dell in Dell's better days (i.e., 1984-2002). I'm so impressed that I think I might replace my desktop with a Sony PC, and that after 8 Dells, and one HP.

Amazon.com Product Description Driving the SRX99 is the capable yet cost-effective Intel Pentium III-M processor, featuring an 850 MHz clock speed and a generous 512 KB of Level 2 cache for enhanced performance during complex computing situations. Sony has paired this processor with 256 MB of RAM--more than enough to minimize the workload on the integrated 20 GB hard drive--and an 11 MB Intel 815EM graphics chip. They've also equipped the unit with a number of other luxuries not often found on notebooks, including an internal CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can play and record CDs and watch movies. While the SRX99 won't efficiently run today's most demanding 3-D games and programs, it will quite easily handle most typical business and entertainment applications. When you open the system's ultrathin magnesium alloy case, you'll find several surprisingly sophisticated amenities inside, including an 87-key keyboard, an electrostatic touch pad and Jog Dial control, a pair of stereo speakers, and a reasonably sized 10.4-inch (1,024 x 768) TFT LCD viewing screen. Sony has included a number of device and connectivity ports on either side, including a MagicGate Memory Stick slot for easy transfer of digital images and other data, an IEEE 1394 interface for high-speed digital video, microphone/audio-in and headphone-out ports, a PC card slot, a USB port for plug-and-play peripherals, and a 2.4 GHz 802.11b connect interface for wireless LAN. An integrated V.90 modem provides low-speed Internet access, and a 10/100 Ethernet port permits high-speed surfing. Your SRX99 will arrive with pre-installed versions of the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, Quicken 2002, Microsoft Word 2002, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and a broad range of audio, video, and still-image tools and utilities. For you Linux nuts, I am dual booting with XP. Here is what you can expect: You can install redhat if you have a USB floppy drive []. The firewire CDROM is not yet recognized by Linux. Redhat 8.0 works well, but you have to install a newer kernel or patch the 2.4.18 kernel to get the wireless card to work. The patch is needed to deal with the ACPI IRQ sharing. Suse Linux wouldn't even install! The boot floppy loads half way and hangs. hmmm.
One feature which really stands out is the clamshell itself. Unlike most notebook computers, which open only about 90-100 degrees, this one can open nearly 180 degrees, which provides a huge advantage in selecting viewing angles. It comes with a fairly large pile of software, including Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and even Everquest (although I wouldn't recommend this as a gaming computer). There are full restore CDs for both the OS and the bundled software. It does compromise a bit on external connections compared with a desktop replacement, and the hard drive is a bit cramped at 20GB, but all in all, it's highly recommended for people for whom mobility is the ultimate requirement.
Low Points: Note about Amazon.com's description of the SRX99: Their review indicates that it has an internal CD/DVD drive. This is not true. It actually comes with an external drive. ... Read more

The unit is driven by a snappy 1.13 GHz Intel Pentium III processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache and 256 MB of RAM to enhance data transfer and calculation speed during complex computing situations. Sony has matched this impressive engine with a capable 32 MB Intel 830MG video chip to ensure you'll have enough graphics processing power for all but the most complex three-dimensional games. And if you ever need a break from your interactive business apps and games, the R505EL is ready to accommodate. Simply attach the enclosed SlimDock docking station and you're set to watch DVD movies or record and listen to audio CDs via the system's combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Pros: Cons: I always read negatives about the Sony Tech Support. So far, fingers crossed, I don't have to deal with them.
Anyone reading this, don't buy sonY, it stucks. My laptop is under warantee, I have had the product repaired twice, of course I have't been able to obtain an exchange machine. Please don't buy Sony if you cherish your time and money.
Bear in mind that I owe the DL model which has a 1GHz processor instead of a 1.13GHz and a slower DVD/CDRW but everything else is the same with this one. Here is what I (you) don't like 1. Although I knew it so I can't blame the laptop for that, the laptop is not the fastest of the bunch. If you want to play Quake3 or the rest of the 3D effect focused latest games this laptop most probably won't do. But playing Warcraft 3, Baldur's Gate 2, Red Alert 2 doing work like listening to music using word excel powerpoint and watching dvds as well as doing some light graphics processing is more than fine. In these tasks the laptop was speedy enough not to get you annoyed or anything 2. The memory can be upgraded only 384 - from 256, bare in mind that the graphics card consumes 32MB of it, and in order to install an extra 256 - to get to 384 - you have to "throw away" the preinstalled 128MB one 3. The laptop is missing a tilt, especially with the docking station on it has no tild whatsoever which can make it uncomfortable to type. 4. Removing or attaching the laptop demands to disconnect virtually all connections although you don't have to shut it down. 5. An IrDA and an SVideo ports are not there for anyone of you that might need them. 6. I don't know if it is a technical characteristic or poor design but one of the two USBs on the laptop is being hidden when you attach the Docking station. 7. The speakers are not what you would call HiFi actually they are weak and without good quality but if you plug an external pair or a pair of nice earphones the sound is very good. 8. The shift key is small. Actually is as small as the rest of the buttons so it is easy to miss before you get used to it. 9. Although it has a CDRW it doesn't come with a dedicated cdrw program - you can use the WinXP copying engine but I find it very underpowered, the SonicStage player that comes with it has the ability to create music and MP3 cds. Anyway I got me Nero and it is working fine with it. 10. I found the power supply large compared to the size of the laptop itself. Now what I (you hopefully) love about it 1. It is very cool to look at especially without the docking station. Very slim and nice, you gonna get asked about it a lot. 2. It is light and again without the docking station VERY light. Therefore very portable. 3. The keyboard has a wonderful feel to it. Sturdy and deep. 4. It is VERY STABLE. In two months the laptop has never crashed. All my prevous laptops - even the latest compaq that was loaded with WinXP - was crashing constantly. This one can go days without restarting. Amazing for a windows machine. 5. The laptop has all essential ports: 2 USB, Firewire - iLink, VGA, line out and mic, 1 PCMCIA, Ethernet and modem... 6. With the docking you also get an extra 2 USB ( you lose one on the notebook thoug cause the docking station covers it) you also get one more iLink, a serial, a parallel and of course you get the CDRW and floppy. 7. It comes with magic gate which is really small and for me is the fine way to back up essential data. No need for special software or problems with limited floppy capacity you can get one of them wuth up to 128MB and the com sees it an extra drive that you can transfer data to with simple drags and drops. 8. The DVD/CDRW speed is really fast the EL model I bet will be even better. 9. If you have time to customise the Jog Dial can be a really handy tool. You can also use its alarm timer to bring the laptop automatically off stand by or hibernation and launch a program on the same time - it has been waking me up playing my favourite music ever since i got it. 10. The screen is perfect. No matter how much sunlight has where you are working it is perfectly visible 11. The battery life is long. With the brightness to the lowest it is around 4 - 4 1/2 hours in light work. With brightness at highest it can see you through a 2 - 2 1/2 hour dvd movie just fine or a bit more than 3 hours of light work 12. It comes with loads of programs. You may never use them but they are there if you need them. The best of them is the Photoshop Elements that is bundled and that is a cut down version of photoshop but for personal use is wonderful. 13. It is quiet - very quiet. If the little fan bothers you you can set it from the power panel to where the fan is off all the time - but bare in mind that if it gets hot then the processor speed drops automatically. 14. The 30GB although does not sound like very many given todays standards they are fine given that this is not a desktop replacement. All in all this is the best laptop i have seen or used. If you are after a laptop that combines high portability, great looks, it is full featured and very very reliable then this has to be on the top of your list. Unless you are planning to spend double the money for an IBM with the same features this is the perfect laptop and with a more than attractive price. Congratulations to Sony for another great product.
After 2 years the machine has held up OK with a couple of major issues. First the power supply connector is highly proprietary and subject to the little plastic insert snapping. This would not be a problem if Sony would sell me a replacement connector, they want (money) for a repair person to fix it. The other problem is that the batteries do seem to go soft after a while. My extended life LiIon battery dropped to giving me muinites of battery time. All in all par for the course with Laptops I suppose. I have had no better experience reliability wise with any other brand. 2 years appears to be the limit. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the VAIO PCG-TR1AP resides a 900 MHz ultra-low voltage Pentium M processor with an amazing one MB Level 2 cache. Sony has matched this processor with 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel 855GM graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. Though this setup won't effectively drive the latest 3-D-based games or keep up with the current crop of desktops, the unit features advanced Intel Centrino mobile technology for improved performance and reduced power consumption over similar speed non-Centrino units, and as such will easily handle lengthy sessions with typical mobile applications. The VAIO PCG-TR1AP features an adequate 30 GB hard disk for your files and applications and a versatile CD-RW/DVD-RW combo drive through which you can archive data, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest movies. You'll monitor your work through a crystal clear 10.6-inch wide (1280x768) TFT display with XBRITE technology, and enter data via an integrated 83-key keyboard and electro-static touchpad. At a mere 10.6 by 7.4 by 1.4 inches and just 3.1 pounds., the VAIO PCG-TR1AP is extraordinarily compact. Yet it's packed with useful amenities, including two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire port, a high-speed RJ-45 Ethernet connection, and wireless LAN. Shutterbugs will appreciate the built-in low-resolution 640x480 swivel camera, while businesspeople will welcome the bundled version of Microsoft's high-end Windows XP Professional operating system. Battery life is estimated at an impressive 2.5 to 7 hours with the enclosed standard cell and 3.5 to 11 hours with a separately available large capacity battery. Reviews (9)
I think I will wait for a little while for the price to drop then I will change it to a 5 stars.
There is one huge flaw though... the 900 mhz processor isn't strong enough to capture mini-DV video from my camcorder. The recordings come out choppy and are totally worthless. Despite working with Sony Customer Service, and changing many advanced settings, the processor just doesn't have enough power. I haven't tried doing a straight copy of a retail DVD, so I'm not sure if it would work, but if it does, I'm sure it would take a LONG time. Bottom line, if you don't want to make copies of any video material (to the hard drive or an external DVD writer), and your eyes are good, I'd recommend this computer. If you want to do anything with video material, go for something with a much more powerful processor. I guess you still can't have everything (small size, good battery life, fast processor) all in one package. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the Vaio GRV550 lies a fast 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache. Sony has matched this speedy CPU with 512 MB of DDR SDRAM internal memory (not upgradable) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500-C graphics processor with 32 MB of onboard memory. Although the system may have some problems smoothly rendering todays most graphically intensive 3-D games, it will easily drive the vast majority of applications on the market today. The Vaio GRV550 supports a variety of data storage options. Sony has equipped the unit with a large 30 GB hard drive and an internal removable CD-RW/DVD combo drive, through which you can burn audio CDs, back up data, and play movies. An optional 3.5-inch floppy disk drive is also available. Tipping the scales at 8 pounds (with battery) or 8.5 pounds (with battery and optical drive) and measuring 1.6 by 14 by 11.8 inches, the Vaio GRV550 is of average size. It is, however, loaded with desirable amenities, including a massive 16.1-inch, high-resolution, 1,280 x 1,024 SXGA TFT display, an 86-key keyboard with electrostatic touch pad, three USB and one IEEE 1394 ports for peripherals such as camcorders or external CD drives, an RJ-45 Ethernet connection for high-speed LAN and Internet access, an internal low-speed modem, and an array of audio/video inputs and outputs. Sony has included tons of useful software such as Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken 2002 New User Edition, Microsoft Word 2002, and a wide variety of top-notch audio, video, and photo-editing applications. this is all on top of the fact that there are some serious flaws in this machine such as poorly placed outputs, horrible battery life, huge and heavy adapter, NO support for media given it is a "media" machine, extremely poor speakers, etc.
I have even tried to load DOS and still it shuts down for no reason what so ever. Does anyone have any idea what this problem might be? Please write soon, I am about to trash the laptop and get me another brand. Hope to hear from you soon.
Over all, excellent machine for the $$ ... Good desktop replacement - ok to lug around if you don't mind a large laptop bag (that 16.1" screen takes lots of room!)
As for the negative aspects, the battery life sucks. When it was new I got maybe 1.5 hours out of it. Now it doesn't seem to accept a charge as good anymore so I'm down to 1 hour. There is a lot of garbage software pre-installed but a simple FORMAT C: solves that problem quickly :). The biggest problem it has is the cooling. The computer gets extremely hot and doesn't have a big enough fan to keep it cool so it shuts down on its own once and a while. Actually it seems to be getting more frequent as time goes on. If I could do it over again, I would've bought a Powerbook G4. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description At 1.9 by 12.8 by 10.5 inches and 6.7 pounds (with battery) or 7.1 pounds (with battery and removable 3.5-inch floppy disk drive), the FXA59 is not an overly large notebook. Yet unlike some Sony portables, it is completely self-contained. A combination CD-RW/DVD drive (24x/8x/8x, 8x DVD) is built right into the unit, as is a spacious 30 GB hard drive. Furthermore, the floppy disk drive may be swapped at any time for an optional second battery. The system is powered by a 1.3 GHz AMD Athlon XP 1500+ processor, a fast yet cost-effective chip featuring AMD's new QuantiSpeed architecture for improved performance, and PowerNow technology for extended battery life. Sony has paired this processor with 256 MB of SDRAM memory (expandable to 512 MB) and an 8 MB ATI Rage Mobility graphics chip. While its graphics processing speed isn't fast enough for the latest 3-D games, the FXA59 will capably handle anything from standard business applications to DVD movies, transmitting video signals to its large 1,400 x 1,050 15-inch XGA TFT display and audio to its integrated stereo speakers. The FXA59 is outfitted with more external connections than most notebook users will ever need, including an i.Link IEEE 1394 jack for fast data uploads from devices such as digital camcorders, two USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, NTSC video-out and external monitor-out, parallel and serial "printer" ports, a microphone-in, and headphone jack. An internal V.90 modem delivers low-speed Web and e-mail access, and a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet interface supportshigh-speed surfing and LAN connectivity. The system's keyboard section features a standard 86-key layout and an electrostatic touch pad. Sony has not included the handy Jog Dial control or Memory Stick media slot found on other models. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken 2002 New User Edition, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and a broad range of audio, video, and still-image tools and utilities. But considering how much use our Vaio has had, we've been very happy. The CD burner has worked flawlessly. I use the Vaio to back up digital images while we're traveling. It's great to be able to burn a CD as backup before deleting the files off of the camera. The kids use it to watch movies and play games and they love the large, bright screen. The off-axis color and brightness are excellent. This is my 4th laptop and finally, I have one that is fast enough for the applications I run. It's amazing what can be fit into such a small package. One warning: the shape and texture of the unit make it easy to drop when pulling it out of a briefcase. I haven't, but if you aren't careful, it could easily happen.

Amazon.com Product Description Driven by a 733 MHz low-heat Crusoe processor (512 KB Level 2 cache) and 128 MB of RAM, the C1MVP/C is ready to handle most any standard notebook application. Its 20 GB hard drive is roomy enough for all your mobile programs, including the pre-installed editions of Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Word 2002, and RealNetworks Real Entertainment suite. And its 8 MB ATI Mobility Radeon-M graphics chip will capably display all but the most graphically intense games and entertainment software on the system's big and bright 8.9-inch UWSXGA TFT viewing screen. The C1MVP/C features many perks of larger notebooks, including an 86-key keyboard, a stick-type pointing device with scroll function and jog dial, a single USB jack, an integrated microphone, V.90 modem, and stereo speakers. Due to its diminutive size the unit features several external accessories, including a port replicator box with VGA out and 10/100 Ethernet connections, an AV out for viewing and recording digital images from a DVD player or VCR, and an additional USB jack. Its CD-ROM drive is also external and therefore somewhat less convenient than a comparable internal unit, but that's one of the few concessions you'll have to make for this level of portability. The PictureBook is not just a computer--it's a video recorder too. Using its concealed 180-degree-rotating Motion Eye CCD camera, you'll capture all your favorite or important moments as still images or MPEG2 mini-movies. Furthermore, the C1MVP/C allows you to quickly and easily store and transfer your digital image and data files to a desktop computer or other device via its MagicGate Memory Stick slot. Sony has also enclosed a variety of multimedia applications to make your personal video environment even easier. Ideal for those who require maximum mobility, the Sony Vaio C1MVP/C PictureBook is proof that good things do indeed come in very small packages.
