Amazon.com Product Description

Weighing in at a barely there 2.2 pounds and sporting a super-slim yet durable 1.2-by-9.9-by-6-inch magnesium alloy case, the Vaio C1MV/C PictureBook is considerably smaller than an average notebook. Nonetheless, this sleek offering from Sony is a powerful and truly versatile digital workhorse.

Driven by a 733 MHz low-heat Crusoe processor (512 KB Level 2 cache) and 128 MB of RAM, the C1MV/C is ready to handle most any standard notebook application. Its 20 GB hard drive is roomy enough for all your mobile programs, including the pre-installed editions of Microsoft Windows XP, Adobe Photoshop Elements, Microsoft Word 2002, and RealNetworks Real Entertainment suite. And its 8 MB ATI Mobility Radeon-M graphics chip will capably display all but the most graphically intense games and entertainment software on the system's big and bright 8.9-inch UWSXGA TFT viewing screen.

The C1MV/C features many perks of larger notebooks, including an 86-key keyboard, a stick-type pointing device with scroll function and jog dial, a single USB jack, an integrated microphone, V.90 modem, and stereo speakers. Due to its diminutive size the unit features several external accessories, including a port replicator box with VGA out and 10/100 Ethernet connections, an AV out for viewing and recording digital images from a DVD player or VCR, and an additional USB jack. Its CD-ROM drive is also external and therefore somewhat less convenient than a comparable internal unit, but that's one of the few concessions you'll have to make for this level of portability.

The PictureBook is not just a computer--it's a video recorder too. Using its concealed 180-degree-rotating Motion Eye CCD camera, you'll capture all your favorite or important moments as still images or MPEG2 mini-movies. Furthermore, the C1MV/C allows you to quickly and easily store and transfer your digital image and data files to a desktop computer or other device via its MagicGate Memory Stick slot. Sony has also enclosed a variety of multimedia applications to make your personal video environment even easier.

Ideal for those who require maximum mobility, the Sony Vaio C1MV/C PictureBook is proof that good things do indeed come in very small packages. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Nice Try, Absolutely Dismal Execution
It looks great. But looks only get you so far. The C1 has simply been my worst PC investment ever.

Sony loads so many proprietary drivers (many that crash more than operate)that the system crawls at a pace equivalent to an obsolete PC rather than a new product. After stripping out all the Sony proprietary drivers, it still crawls. If you want to upgrade the memory, you will pay approximately 10 times market price for Sony proprietary memory.

Poor battery life makes the product virtually useless if you travel. At 'Ultimate' battery life setting, with the screen so dim you can barely see it, you can get just over an hour. Most of that is used by booting up.

From a quality perspective, the Sony falls well short of expectation. After seven trips to the Sony warranty center with multiple failures and failed fixes, I would advise that a three year old with a screw driver may be more effective at resolving your problems.

Simply put, don't waste your money. While it is a great looking machine in a great form factor, it is at best equivalent to a painfully slow desktop as it needs to be permanently plugged in.

5-0 out of 5 stars What they don't tell you about this notebook
The C1MV/C PictureBook is a fantastic computer for those who don't find PDA's up to par with their requirements. A few things are omitted from the description though: 1. The package arrived with an external cd rom machine...2. There is a little flap on the right hand side to connect a telephone cable (not supplied) to the machine which does have a built in V90 modem. 3. when I checked the CPU

under the following: Control Panel/System Property/ General I found out that what I have is:
TM5800 327MHZ (Half the speed!!!) and 112MB of RAM. After calling Sony I found out that this is a stepped processor and does not utilise the full 733mhz unless needed because of the amount of heat it would generate, also 16 of the 128 MBs of RAM is reserved for the video card. 4. Finally, when checking the hard disk capacity please be aware that it is partitioned into C drive and D drive therefore you will not see the full 20MBs in C. This means that you should try as much as possible to download and store information in D so as not to utilise all the space in C. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

If you're in the market for a new notebook or thinking about updating that clunky old PC, Sony may have the solution. Big and powerful and packed with features, its Vaio GRX series of notebooks sports a level of performance not normally found in portable computers. Although heavier (8 pounds) and slightly more cumbersome (14 by 11.5 by 1.8 inches) than some of Sony's less capable notebooks, the GRX series is just as at home on a desktop as in an airplane or hotel room. The GRX570 model in particular offers a solid combination of price and performance and may well be the only computer you need.

From its speedy 1.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with enhanced SpeedStep technology to its generous 512 KB of Level 2 cache and massive 512 MB DDR of RAM, the GRX570 will burn through anything you can throw its way. Butblazing-fast data processing is just part of the story. Graphically, the unit is built to please. Featuring a potent 32 MB AGP-enabled ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics card and a gigantic 16.1-inch, high-resolution 1,600 x 1,200 UXGA TFT display (the same viewing area as most 17-inch CRT monitors), the GRX570 provides a wonderful visual environment in which to conduct business activities and play 3-D games. You may even want to watch a few movies or archive data and burn music CDs via the unit's internal removable CD-RW/DVD combination drive (24x/16x/10x CD-RW, 12x DVD).

Whatever you do, be assured the GRX570's removable 40 GB hard drive--one of the largest found in any retail notebook--is ready to handle all your applications and files. The system also includes a Memory Stick media slot for Memory Stick or MagicGate media, an optional 3.5-inch floppy disk drive, and space for two Type I or Type II PC Card slots. Connectivity is offered in the form of a bevy of ports, including an i.Link IEEE 1394 jack for fast data uploads from devices such as digital camcorders, three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, aTV-out and external monitor-out, a parallel port, microphone-in, and headphone jack. An internal V.90 modem delivers low-speed Web and e-mail access, and a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet interface supports high-speed surfing and LAN connectivity.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken 2002 New User Edition, Microsoft Word 2002, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and a broad range of audio, video, and still-image tools and utilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars What are you thinking, Mr. Ting???
This computer has everything you could possibly need, including a firewire port. Sony calls this the i.link (IEEE 1394), and it is through this you can connect your external hard drive, that is, if you can use up the 40 gigabytes that they already offer in the computer itself.

My only problem with the laptop is its sheer weight and size, but i guess that is something you have to deal with if you want to have an amazing 16.1" screen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missed the boat by a mile
I bought this computer due to the size of the screen which I needed. But after using it for a while, I found quite a few faults.

Here they are :

* The most obnoxious hard disk that ever consigned to a computer. It is loud, clunky, crackly. Considering that this is the newest and the greatest laptop from Sony, I wonder how in the world the R&D folks could ever decide on configuring this drive to the computer.

* Max out at 512m memory is just NOT good enough. Considering that this notebook is targetted for the audio/video presentation, quite often users memory intensive programs like "Photoshop" and the latest software for digital scanning, the performance would likely be better with more memory allocated.

* The "home" key is just to the right of the backspace and is a ergonomic disaster when quite often backspacing with activate the "home" key that will put your cursor a mile away from when you want.

* The jog pad is again a brain-dead feature that's useless.

* Considering the obnoxious hard-disk, one could have configured an external drive to be used....but again a problem....NO FIREWIRE port.

* Adding additional drive is a big problem and again SOOONNNY flunked in the design department because of additional storage needed for digital imaging.

PROS :

Other than the big screen, the new laptop offers very little functional features.

Suggestion : Bypass the GRX series and wait at least for improvements.

2-0 out of 5 stars An overrated product and generally bad use of your money
Sony notebooks must be the most overpriced, overrated, and undersupported in the market, even by PC standards. The saddest thing about it is that Sony uses their software bundling as bait. Be warned, it worked on me, please don't let it happen to you. The PCG-GRX570 I bought has turned out to be the bane of my existence. First of all, I hadn't realized just how heavy and clunky the unit was until I received it. This is certainly not a portable unit if that's what you are looking for. Sony certainly wasn't kidding when they called it a desktop replacement as it will spend most of its life on your desktop unless you want to strain a few vertebra trying to carry it around (9-11 lbs incl. battery, but no accessories etc in that weight). Secondly, it is too noisy for something that was supposed to be top of the line. The CD/DVD drive can freak you out sometimes just by the sheer amount of noise. Some months after I got it (and towards the end of the limited warranty), I started getting a garbled screen that Sony was quite reluctant to fix. I got the sense that they were trying to delay me until the warranty expired. Anyway, after a lot of nagging on my part, they finally got it fixed though it took two service requests to do it after they just mucked around the first time round. The latest problem I have had with this notebook is that the same LCD screen has now gotten so dim that I cannot use the computer any more unless I attach it to an external monitor. All the tips in the troubleshooting guide and SonyIQ Knowledge Database have proved quite useless, as have the support staff at their online service. Don't bother with the online support people, they will only refer you to articles at the knowledge database which you can find unaided anyway. They are on the whole quite clueless, as is most of Sony's support staff. After pleading ignorance to what could be ailing this now glorified CPU and keyboard, the support people at Sony are now advising me to send it in to their less than stellar group at the service center in San Diego. The initial estimates for my repair job (now that the 1 year limited warranty has expired) is at least $700, and I am sure that it would be pushing $1500 by the time they are done. Personally, I am just going to use that money as seed money for next notebook computer, which will definitely not be a Sony. Fixing this Sony notebook is just not worth that amount of money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worth every penny....
The GRX500 series machines are in a class by themselves. In my opinion, their large keyboard and screen size make them head and heals over competitor laptops. This can easily fill the role of being the only computer you need to own.

Sony's 16.1" TFT is a wonder, improving any graphic it displays. Graphics appear with more presence, ambience and continuity, making the TFT superior to CRT monitors. Simulators and games appear more realistic. Competitor TFTs are not as high of quality. DVD playback is obviously superior due to the larger screen, pre-empting some of us from having to buy a dedicated DVD player.

To give you an idea of what you can fit onto the standard 1600 x 1200 x 32 bit screen, consider the default-formatted Excel spreadsheet at 100% zoom with columns A through X and 57 rows visible!

I found the machine is usable on a plane despite its larger size. You would definitely appear more professional with this machine next to smaller laptops you see in meetings on conference tables.

The bundled software speaks to the superior audio and video output of this machine. The pute has terrific, blow you away sound (for a laptop, i.e. don't expect much bass) with its Yamaha sound card. The three USB ports are very considerately located on three different sides of the machine. Furthermore, there are much larger "wrist rest" areas than on other laptops, making it more comfortable ergonomically.

Cons:

1. As with several OEM putes, you do not get a bootable XP disk, so if you lose the drive, you must recover to day 1, unless you imaged the drive. I lost config.sys, and Sony said I needed to use the recover disks to get the pute back (and erase a perfectly good drive. However, if I had a MS XP setup disk, there is a utility to fix config.sys. Bottom line: image the drive if you get this pute after your customization.

2. Sony does not make or endorse a product which removes the inevitable fingerprints from the TFT screen.

3. Sony customer support is not always knowledgeable about the machine. For example, I asked if a USB floppy drive would be a bootable drive, the rep said no. In reality, I found the machine can boot off a USB floppy. (While I am on the subject, you should plan on eventually buying a USB floppy if you buy this machine for data exchange and drive image recovery. They are fairly affordable).

4. Sony's own VAIO system software windows are dwarfed on the default huge 1600 x 1200 screen, and they cannot be scaled up.

5. Sony does not appear to explain their audio/visual port specifications and how their power management system operates in concert with MS Windows XP power management.

6. The large adapter outputs 19.2 volts, an uncommon voltage.

Amazon.com Product Description

Some PC users simply don’t want or need the cutting-edge performance of a costly, top-of-the-line mobile computer. For them, Sony offers the Vaio PCG-FR130 notebook, a sensibly designed and affordable unit that’s powerful enough to operate most typical portable computing applications.

At the heart of the Vaio PCG-FR130 is a cost-effective yet muscular 1.67 GHz AMD Athlon XP 2000+ processor, which, when combined with the system’s adequate allotment of 256 MB of DDR SDRAM (expandable to 1,024 MB), delivers above-average power. An integrated 16 MB nVidia GeForce4 420 Go-V graphics chipset enhances the performance of 3-D video applications but is certainly not sufficient for serious gaming.

Measuring 13 by 10.8 by 1.7 to 2.1 inches and weighing just 7.2 pounds, the Vaio PCG-FR130 is smaller and more lightweight than many of today’s notebooks. Sony has equipped the unit with a sizable 40 GB hard disk and an internal CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, back up important files, and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. You’ll monitor your activities on a 14.1-inch XGA TFT display capable of 1,024 x 768 resolution.

Other desirable amenities include an internal V.90 modem for low-speed e-communications, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Ethernet interface for high-speed connectivity, headphone and microphone ports, integrated stereo speakers, and an 86-key QWERTY keyboard with electrostatic touchpad. Home movie and digital picture buffs will appreciate the unit’s two high-speed USB 2.0 ports and single IEEE 1394 interface.

Sony has pre-installed an impressive variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken 2002 New Users Edition, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, and a broad array of audio, video, and photo utilities. Battery life for the Vaio PCG-FR130 is estimated at 2.5 to 3 hours. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Problems with Alps Touch Pad
At first sight, the FR-130 laptop endears itself easily: solid build, decent styling, nice LCD screen, and a wealth of hardware and software extras to sweeten the deal. Perhaps too many free multimedia software that few need or use.

BUT 2 months after owning a brand new one, my FR-130 touch pad (made by Alps) goes crazy and starts acting on its own: it moves independently of your finger motion, clicks to open and close apps, or just does not move at all. Problem persists even after downloading the latest driver from Alps/Sony (July 2003).

A quick Google search for "Alps Touch Pad Problem" reveals that it is a generic problem affecting many owners across many Sony models.

Disgusted with the Touch Pad, I just attach an USB mouse and the latter seems to work ok. But once in a great while, the mouse acts up just like the touch pad! By uninstalling the touch pad driver and the mouse driver, and then rebooting, things return to normal ... until the next time. Fortunately, the mouse is more stable than the touch pad, so in between crises, you can still use your FR-130 if you don't mind using a mouse in lieu of the touch pad. Perhaps the intermittency is due to poor heat dissipation.

I think Sony and Alps stink to high heavens for not resolving that issue. Other than that, the FR-130 is a capable laptop for most needs. For those who needs a laptop to do video editing annd related multimedia chores, Sony is the leader. If you can close your eyes to its idiotic touch pad.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid budget desktop replacement notebook
Great deal for the money. The nVidia GeForce4Go 16meg video is a step up from the integrated video chipsets most budget laptops use, enough to play Quake 3 at 1024x768 res with full detail. The memory is easily upgradable, I added a second DIMM, both DIMM slots are unobstructed. Sony wisely divided the HD into two partitions, which allowed me to replace the second partition with Red Hat Linux without disturbing the factory WinXP Home installation. FYI, while I haven't been able to get power management to work under Linux, everything else that I've tried works. The only caveat is the 8 pound weight.

Note to Sony: I'd have purchased a more expensive notebook if an Athlon notebook with a larger screen, higher-end graphics chip, and what not had been available. I DO NOT BUY INTEL CHIPS! That said, it's probably just as well that I saved my money and went with this well-rounded desktop replacement.

1-0 out of 5 stars This is a small information giving website
I did not like that they did not give a price for the Sony Vaio PCG-FR130. That is to bad for them because i was interested in buying that modle but i guess i will go to another competetor.

4-0 out of 5 stars Really a 4 1/2 Star
Well, this was my first laptop purchase...it was definately a hard decision, but the Sony VAIO has impressed me in every area so far. For a laptop bought at a nationwide electronics store for under a thousand dollars, I don't think I could be more pleased. :)

This laptop beat the competition due to it's wealth of features. The USB 2.0 ports, the Firewire ports, and Word Perfect Office (399 value!) really sold me on this laptop. With the other laptops in the sub-1000 range, I was looking at USB 1.1, no firewire, and no productivity apps.

Also included are the roomy 40 GB HD as well as the 24x CD-RW. An adequate video card (I don't game) and a great sounding sound card (just put it through some headphones!) round out the machine.

I know that this review isn't very helpful...but I can run Photoshop, Office, browse the web, and be burning a CD all at once. The power is adequate for my needs...and I'd say for the needs of any student. I hook up a 10 dollar USB optical mouse and I'm good to go. Yes, it runs a little hot on the lap...but what laptop doesn't? If you want a cool-running laptop, be prepared to shell out an extra grand for Centrino.

Why does it not get 5 stars?

Once you load a non-Windows operating system, you void the warranty. Once you take it out of the country, you void the warranty (Go figure...it's a laptop!)... The last is more annoying than the first because I am going to school in the UK.

It also gets dinged for not having more RAM.

Other than that, it's a great little machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Quality, Great Price
I'm definately a computer fanatic, I build my desktops computers myself because I can never find a desktop that has exactly what I want. This is my second notebook, I've owned it for just two days and I'm very impressed. Compared with my previous notebook (brand of my previous notebook will remain nameless here) it's obvious the quality construction Sony uses to build its notebooks. VAIOs are advertised based on their stylishness, but they are also very sound, sturdy notebooks as well. All though it's not the top of the line by today's standards, I have yet to see any lacking in performance in any of the applications I use on a regular basis, and since it comes with an Nvidia graphics chip, I'm sure it will perform admirably on the games that I play as well.

The software package that came with it seems to contain more potentially useful apps than junk apps. I can't comment on the media apps bundled yet, they'll definately take a little time to learn since they look to be packed with features, definately more robust than I had expected.

The only dissapointment that I found is my new VAIO lacks a feature that was on my previous laptop: the ability to power up just the CD drive and use it as an oversized CD player. Although this isn't a big enough minus to count against the 5 star rating. Definately a great notebook! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

For those who demand high-end processing, Sony offers the speedy VAIO GRV680P Notebook. Measuring 1.8 by 14 by 11.8 inches and tipping the scales at 8.1 pounds (with battery) or 8.7 pounds (with battery and optical drive), the VAIO PCG-GRV680P is larger and heavier than many of today's new ultra-lightweight mobile computers. Yet it's also more powerful than most, with excellent 2-D performance, comparatively solid 3-D performance and integrated DVD burning capabilities.

Sporting a commanding 2.6 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 512 KB of Level 2 cache, a 400 MHz bus and 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory, the VAIO PCG-GRV680P is built to blast through most any application. Sony has complemented the system's powerful "engine" with an impressive 64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 video acceleration chipset to make quick work of graphics-intensive 3-D applications and all but the most demanding 3-D games. The unit's integrated 60 GB hard disk offers plenty of room to store important files and programs, and its detachable DVD+/DVD-RW/CD-RW combo drive allows you to turn home videos into DVDs, watch the latest Hollywood releases, burn and play audio CDs and backup data.

Multimedia enthusiasts in particular will appreciate the system's massive 16-inch SXGA TFT viewing screen (1280 by 1024 resolution) and integrated stereo speakers. Other desirable amenities include a Memory Stick media slot, three USB ports, a fast IEEE 1394 port for data transfers from peripherals such as digital camcorders, a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access, a 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet interface for high-speed connectivity, and an 86-key QWERTY keyboard with electro-static touchpad. The unit delivers 1.5 to 3.5 hours of battery life with one battery attached and 3.0 to 7.0 hours with an optional second battery installed in its multi-purpose bay.

The VAIO PCG-GRV680P is pre-loaded with a wide variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition (unlike the otherwise similar VAIO PCG-GRV680 Notebook, which ships with Windows XP Home Edition), Microsoft Money 2003, Adobe Premiere LE, and a broad array of audio, video and photo utilities. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal, Has Everything, but Battery Life
...I have enjoyed this laptop except for the short battery life. The only flip side to this is that the computer can be recharged within two hours. However, for someone that travels a lot by air this fact is very limiting to how much I can use it. And, I am not going to pay $250 for an extra battery. Sony must think me as being deranged to even consider that. Now that I have vented about the short battery life I shall focus on what the laptop does have: just about everything else. It has all the ports that I need such as two USBs, serial, printer, and your audio and video ports. It has managed to meet most of my business needs. I would buy another Sony.

5-0 out of 5 stars solid system with hidden feature
I bought this laptop because it has a complete set of features including a DVD and CDRW combo drive. On all the sites I looked at, the specs mention 4xRW, but what all of them fail to mention is it also writes 8x for normal writes. Since I use CDR for backups, and only burn full cd's it was a nice surprise. Burning a whole CD of backup files and data only took 14minutes. The size is a bit big for heavy duty travel, but for light travel it is a good size. The only annoying thing about the system is it has windows XP on it, which in my mind is a down grade from win2K. Most of the default settings make the system totally wide open to hacking, viruses and trojans. Although there are new features in XP that have potential productivity enhancements, they are far from critical and really aren't earth shattering.
The system doesn't quite have the battery life of the P3 version, but 30-60 minutes more of computing time per battery doesn't warrant 250 bucks more in my mind.
If one were to put two batteries in it, you would only gain another hour of power, where as a third batter for 250 would get you 2+ hrs. From a financial point of view, getting a third batter is a much better way to go for travelers who compute on the go and take long flights. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's new K series of VAIO portable computers is a fine middle ground for those who can't afford the absolute fastest or smallest super-notebooks but don't want to be saddled with a bulky, sluggish bargain-basement offering either. This model, the VAIO PCG-K15, is one of two midlevel units in the K series, thus striking a good balance between cost and performance. Sporting a large hard drive, an upscale processor and the advanced functionality of DVD burning and wireless communication, it is ready for most any situation and environment from school to home to office and any place in between.

Tastefully clad a two-tone paint scheme and reasonably diminutive at 7.3 pounds and 1.6 -- 2.7 by 13 by 10.9 inches, the VAIO PCG-K15 is a stylish and comfortably portable unit. The system is driven by a high-end 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor and a capable alloent of 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory. The video card, an ATI Radeon IGP 345M, is certainly not the pinnacle of 3-D gaming or 3-D animation performance, though it does support dual displays for those times when two monitors are necessary. Furthermore, the flip-open 15-inch XGA TFT display (1024 by 768 maximum resolution) features Sony's new Xbrite technology for superior brightness, contrast and viewing angles than many other notebook displays.

For your data storage needs, the VAIO PCG-K15 offers a large 60 GB hard disk and a DVD+RW/-RW/CD-RW combo drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive your data, watch your favorite DVD movies and record video footage to durable DVD media. The unit is equipped with a number of standard amenities, including an 86-key keyboard with electro-static touch pad, a Memory Stick PRO media slot for data transfers from external peripherals, one Type III or two Type I or Type II PC Card capability, and a pair of internal stereo speakers.

Connectivity options include an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for fast interaction with external devices such as digital camcorders, three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripheral connections, a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email, a high-speed RJ-45 LAN network connector, and integrated wireless LAN for cord-free network and e-communication access.

The impressive software bundle includes the Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, Intuit's Quicken New User Edition financial center, and a wide range of Sony's own multimedia utilities. Estimated battery life is somewhat less than stellar at 1.0 to 2.5 hours per charge. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Mid-grade notebook!
Overall nice machine. I get about 2.5-3 full hours battery life, even while watching a DVD. Didn't come with any disks, so make sure you make your own when you first buy. Expensive batteries and AC power supplies.. few accessories. But the sceen/display is amazing! Well built, full of built-in features, and a pleasure to use. Again, the display is truely unsurpassed.

Could be better, but not at this price.

5-0 out of 5 stars Low battery life but a good computer
Sony makes good electronics what can I say..and everybody including myself has no problems with Vaios as far as bugs or what not...good computer.

3-0 out of 5 stars Vaio K15
Overall, a solid mid-level notebook capable of performing a wide variety of functions and multi-media applications. Unfortunately, the down side is a pretty big one: battery life is pretty pathetic. Don't count on more than 45 to 50 minutes playing a dvd on a fully charged battery. I've also had a few intermittent problems getting it to recognize photos stored on my Sony memory sticks, which is kind of ironic considering it's Sony's own proprietary memory storage medium.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Notebook
I have had this unit for 3 weeks now and find myself liking it more everytime I use it. Very versatile and loaded with some very nice features for the price. The display is exceptional for a notebook, no need to hook it up to my 19" Viewsonic. I was a bit worried about not having any backup/restore disks but was pleasantly surprised to find that it will make you a set if you want, on either a cd or dvd.
The only drawback is the battery life. About 1 hour is all I have been able to squeak out. But considering that I bought it for a desktop replacement, I can live with having it plugged in.
Overall, I would recommend this notebook to anyone looking for a desktop replacement in notebook form.

1-0 out of 5 stars Dont ever think upgrades
Never trust Sony laptops, you lose functionality if you ever make the mistake of upgrading and the laptop is pretty much useless. ... Read more

by Sony

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed for the semi-mobile professional, the Sony PCG-GRT100 notebook PC is a great choice as a desktop replacement. It's packed with productivity enhancing technology and exclusive Sony multimedia software as well as a large 15-inch TFT active matrix screen. This model also features a 2.66 GHz Pentium 4 processor, 40 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, a combo DVD+/-RW and CD-RW drive, and a 32 MB Nvidia GeForce4 420 Go video/graphics card. It also offers wi-fi (802.11b) connectivity.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 40 GB IDE hard drive is on the small side compared to other notebooks. However, it does offer a decent enough capacity for storing documents and productivity software for road warriors--but not enough for much multimedia storage.
  • Processor: The 2.66 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor offers enough speed for your work today, and it is at the top range of speeds for this processor. It has a rather fast front-side bus (FSB) of 533 MHz and a 512 KB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The 512 MB of built-in memory (DDR SDRAM) is a good start for power users. It has two memory slots in total, with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB (2 x 512 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo DVD+/-RW and CD-RW drive. For DVD-RW discs, it has a 1x write/rewrite speed, while for DVD+RW discs it has a 2x write/rewrite speed (DVDs are read at 5x. For CDs, it has a 16x write/8x rewrite/24x read speed.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 85-key keyboard and electro-static two-button touchpad.
Sound and Graphics
The installed Nvidia GeForce4 420 Go video/graphics card offers decent, but not overly strong, 3-D graphics rendering, and it has 32 MB of allocated video memory (which will help take the load off the processor when watching DVD movies). The 15-inch XGA TFT active matrix LCD has a native 1024 x 768 pixel display. It also has an sound card that's integrated into the main board, and offers built-in stereo speakers.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
This PCG-GRT100 model model has an integrated wireless LAN that connects using the 802.11b wireless standard, which is not exactly in step with the latest in wireless networking--54g, or 802.11g. You get a decent--but not overpowering--offering of connectivity options, including both high-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
  • 1 Memory Stick slot (Memory Stick Pro compatible)
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also has a hot-swappable bay for adding an optional optical drive or second battery.

Preloaded System and Software
This PCG-GRT100 notebook comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). It also is loaded with a bevy of Sony multimedia software: PictureGear Studio (digital photo), SonicStage (digital music), and DVgate (digital video). Other preloaded software includes Microsoft Money and Encarta,InterVideo WinDVD, and Norton Internet Security Center (with 90-day subscription).

Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 2.0 x 12.9 x 10.7 inches (H x W x D) and weighing just 7.9 pounds, the PCG-GRT100 is bit larger than other notebooks in its range. It's best used as a desktop replacement while offering portability when you need it.

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery offers an average battery life range of 1.5 hours (depending on usage).

What's in the Box
This package contains the Sony Vaio PCG-GRT100 notebook PC (model PCGGRT1002A), rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. It's backed by a 1-year warranty for parts and labor, and 90 days of phone support. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

If you crave the ultimate in computing portability, Sony's Vaio PCG-SRX87 notebook may very well be the answer. Tipping the scales at a featherweight 2.76 pounds, the SRX87 is no heavier than a typical purse. Just 1.1 by 10.2 by 7.7 inches, it's slim enough to fit inside one. But make no mistake: Sony's smallest notebook is as powerful as it is convenient.

Driving the SRX87 is the capable yet cost-effective Intel Pentium III-M processor, featuring an 850 MHz clock speed and a generous 512 KB of Level 2 cache for enhanced performance during complex computing situations. Sony has paired this processor with 256 MB of RAM--more than enough to minimize the workload on the integrated 20 GB hard drive--and an 11 MB Intel 815EM graphics chip. They've also equipped the unit with a number of other luxuries not often found on notebooks, including an internal DVD-ROM drive through which you can play CDs and watch movies. While the SRX87 won't efficiently run today's most demanding 3-D games and programs, it will quite easily handle most typical business and entertainment applications.

When you open the system's ultrathin magnesium alloy case, you'll find several surprisingly sophisticated amenities inside, including an 87-key keyboard, an electrostatic touch pad and Jog Dial control, a pair of stereo speakers, and a reasonably sized 10.4-inch (1,024 x 768) TFT LCD viewing screen. Sony has included a number of device and connectivity ports on either side, including a MagicGate Memory Stick slot for easy transfer of digital images and other data, an IEEE 1394 interface for high-speed digital video, microphone/audio-in and headphone-out ports, a PC card slot, a USB port for plug-and-play peripherals, and a 2.4 GHz 802.11b connect interface for wireless LAN. An integrated V.90 modem provides low-speed Internet access, and a 10/100 Ethernet port permits high-speed surfing.

Your SRX87 will arrive with pre-installed versions of the Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, Quicken 2002, Microsoft Word 2002, Adobe Photoshop Elements, and a broad range of audio, video, and still-image tools and utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony only
This computer brought back my faith in computers. After owing a compact Presario that I got only a year and a half use from before its circuit board fired, I was very disheartened by computers. My compact laptop always had one problem or another. It really was a lemon from the day I bought it. This little Vaio laptop is amazing. It weights 2.76LBs. It is perfect for people like me that like to take their computer to class with them. I have books that weight in more than this machine. I would recommend this computer to anyone who needs to be really mobile, with a fast reliable computer. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Built for notebook users whose situation and requirements dictate extreme portability, Sony's TR series of mobile computers are amazingly petite yet satisfactorily powered. Demanding folks who need top-end speed and all the capabilities of a desktop should look elsewhere, but those who consistently work in remote environments or simply appreciate the convenience of miniaturization would do well with this, the Sony VAIO PCG-TR1A Notebook PC.

The VAIO PCG-TR1A features advanced Intel Centrino mobile technology for improved performance and reduced power consumption over similar speed non-Centrino units. At the heart of the system sits a 900 MHz ultra-low voltage Pentium M processor with an amazing one MB Level 2 cache. Sony has matched this processor with 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel 855GM graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. Though this setup won't effectively drive the latest 3-D-based applications or keep up with the current crop of desktops, it will easily handle most typical mobile tasks.

The system features an adequate 30 GB hard disk for your files and applications and a versatile CD-RW/DVD-RW combo drive through which you can archive data, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest movies. You'll monitor your work through a crystal clear 10.6-inch wide (1280x768) TFT display with XBRITE technology, and enter data via an integrated 83-key keyboard and electro-static touchpad.

At a mere 10.6 by 7.4 by 1.4 inches and just 3.1 pounds, the VAIO PCG-TR1A is extraordinarily compact. Yet it's packed with useful amenities, including two high-speed USB 2.0 ports, one FireWire port, a low-speed RJ-11 modem, a high-speed RJ-45 Ethernet connection and wireless LAN. Shutterbugs will appreciate the system's built-in low-resolution 640x480 swivel camera. Battery life is estimated at an impressive 2.5 to 7 hours with the enclosed standard cell and 3.5 to 11 hours with a separately available large capacity battery. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Great machine but very fragile, and Sony will not fix it!
I bought this and absolutely loved it. But 4 months later I found the left corner mysteriously cracked, and a whole piece of the case fell out! I did nothing to get there. But Sony said that this was damage due to misuse somehow and refused to repair it. CompUSA charged $500 for extended warranty but then say sorry, they don't cover plastic parts and any kind of damage. I now have a gaping hole in a brand new computer without misuse, and facing a huge bill without recourse!
This machine is too sensitive for normal use.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product, Poor Customer Service
I just bought PCG-TR2A last week. I am very satisfied with the product, but unfortunately the customer service is very bad.

I failed to upgrade the pre installed XP Home to XP Pro. The network smart capture software just can not work. And there is no clue on how to reinstall this application. So I called Hong Kong Customer Service and send them many emails without any solution. They only responded my email suggesting me not to upgrade the O/S. So, I should stay with XP Home forever???

5-0 out of 5 stars Great laptop
I have 3 laptops now, an alienware 51m 3.06HT monster, a HP ze5185 medium and the TR1A , i love the TR1A, its very small yes, if you have bad eyesight, i wouldn't recommend it.

large hands migh thave trouble with the smaller than usual keyboard.

my only real complaint is that it doesn't have built in IR, but thats only because i need it, and i'd prefer not to use up a usb slot or have a dongle hanging off it.

Display is fantastic, speed is great, seems to be about equivalent to a celeron 1.4 or 1.6.

its a little flimsy in some ways, but also really well built in others.

hard disk performance is great, i run developer studio 6 on it mainly and it copes no problem, which i was suprised at just how perky it is compared to the tablets or transmetas.

Battery life is simply phenomenal, its hard to achieve close to 7 hours as claimed, but i've made 4 easily.

very very happy with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Micro Notebook
This notebook is great, the keys are much larger than previous 3lb micro notebooks. It is a very usable keyboard. The display is the most vibrant, beautiful display I have seen yet. The built in 802.11B has great range. The battery life is excellent, I still can't believe you can get 6-7 hrs on a standard battery.
I love this notebook.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Windows machine - only OK for Linux users
If you're looking for a capable, small, and light subnotebook, this is one of the best on the market right now. The other one you should consider is the Fujitsu Lifebook P5000 Series. The Sony is an outstanding machine. The screen is beautiful and looks great even in direct sunlight. Performance is pretty good too. Mine dual-boots into Linux (an ACPI kernel is required), and Linux is the reason this machine only gets 4 stars. The native screen resolution (1280x768) is not supported under Linux because Intel won't release the necessary technical specs on the 855GM chipset -- so you'll be stuck with 1024x768, either stretched to fill the screen or with black bars on either side. Intel claims to be working on this issue, but if you're a Linux user, please take the time to contact them on their website to let them know it's important! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars One headache after another...
I bought this computer one year ago and have lost an unacceptable amount of time trying to fix its many problems. First, VAIOs are known for having DVD sound problems. Mine was no exception. Second, this VAIO does not operate properly with many common programs, especially Adobe Photoshop(it shuts itself off in the middle of work). Third, the battery life is so low as to be an embarrassment. Fourth problem with the VAIO = NOT ENOUGH MEMORY - thinking I wouldn't need more than a 20 gig hardrive was a big mistake! Shop around for your next laptop and DON'T buy a Sony VAIO. You will be sorry.

4-0 out of 5 stars Does more than the competition.
I read of peoples problems with other brands of computers all of the time. I personally love my PCG-FXA63 Vaio and would recommend it to anyone. The only problems I have had were from human error(mine). The only drawback of this system is hard drive space, but that can be replaced easily enough.

Buy one, you won't be sorry!

4-0 out of 5 stars Not too shabby for the price
After many years ... well 2 years ... and much heartache, I 86-ed my Compaq Presario laptop, and bought the Vaio FXA63. Much to my surprise, this little box did everything I wanted. Game performance was fine, and I found the graphics to be quite acceptable. Love being able to put 2 batteries in it. Best of all: Solaris x86 runs on it like a dream. (Get the realtek driver and XFree86 drivers and away you go.) Snappy little box; envy of all my working friends (except those who upgraded to the FVR-28). Wish it had a bigger drive and DVD writer, but for a year ago it was awesome.

3-0 out of 5 stars Its not a bad machine, but they do get better
I bought this expecting more, don't get me wrong it is a good notebook, but shop around. The hard drives are too small, the track pad is a pain in my ___, And I HATE Windows,(Microsoft in general) If this had 160GB drive(s) and RedHat Linux 9 I would love it....but..no!
Avoid Windows products at all costs, espically XP(nothing but 2000's bug fix's...if that!!) True computer nuts know what I mean. But if you are on a budget, and like Windows(ugggh) this is not a bad choice..like I said shop around and compare.

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazing display but very poor hardware and support.
I purchase Sony Vaio and had high opinion regarding Sony products. But, I was very disappointed with this product. My hard disk was very noisy and I had to send it for repair, they replaced my hardware with refurbished parts and sent it back. When I received the Laptop, the keyboard was out of place and body had scratches on it and I had to send it back again. The technical support people at times are extremely rude that it is unbelievable, after request to call before they ship the item back they sent it right back without calling us. The letter it came back with had no clear explanation of what was fixed.

Even when I called back, after 35 mins of hold a very rude person replied my phone and this was not the first time I had experienced this with their technical support. I have spent lot of hours just rebuilding this laptop, waiting on phone and downtime when I had to ship for repair. I feel sorry for buying this product.

The display is amazing but that is about it, rest of the hardware is okay and you will have many incompatibly issues with this laptop. I would rather buy a Dell or Toshiba but never again another Sony Laptop

Amazon.com Product Description

Ample proof that good things come in (very) small packages, Sony’s new PCG-V505AXP notebook is one of the first mobile computers to offer Pentium 4 processing in an ultralightweight format. And that’s just one of several surprises you’ll find in this tiny and innovative powerhouse.

Measuring a mere 1.38 by 10.9 by 9.54 inches and tipping the scales at just 4.34 pounds, the Vaio PCG-V505AXP is easy to take with you no matter where you’re going. Yet you won’t be forced to sacrifice power for this level of portability. Driving the unit is a snappy 1.8 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 processor, a surprising 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1,024 MB), and a 16 MB ATI Mobility Radeon graphics chipset. In plain English, the Vaio PCG-V505AXP will efficiently handle every application a full-size desktop PC can operate, with the exception of the latest crop of 3-D games and animation packages.

Distinguished from its close cousin, the Vaio PCG-V505AX, by virtue of its slightly smaller hard disk (30 vs. 40 GB) the PCG-V505AXP is nevertheless ready for most common data storage and transfer needs. Although it can’t record DVDs, it will allow you to watch movies, burn and play music compilations, listen to retail CDs, and back up important files and data on its combination DVD/CD-RW drive.

Sony has preinstalled an impressive variety of software, including Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003 Standard, and a broad array of audio, video, and photo utilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great! Except...
The machine is fast, light and small. The keyboard works, but the mousepad has some problems. First of all, it is automatically programmed to have all these functions that they don't tell you about. Such as, to exit something you have to tap in the corner of the pad. Well, because they don't tell you about that, you could be typing an email and oops! it's gone. Even when you eliminate all but the scrolling, it clicks itself out. It is very annoying!

1-0 out of 5 stars Lousy support
I purchased the PCG-V505P from Sony in Australia. Same problems with the mousepad not functioning. Sony support in Australia is incredibly bad - it took them 3 weeks to just reply to my inquiry on their local support website to tell me where to take it in for service and then they said it would take 5 days or longer to repair. By comparison, Toshiba send a courier to pick up a faulty unit in warranty and return it the next day. You'd be crazy to purchase Sony if you're a serious business user. I'll live without a usable mousepad until my next PC purchase (not Sony)

3-0 out of 5 stars problem with mouse pad and keyboard
I own this unit for 2 months. I also have the problem with mouse pad and keyboard. It usually start clicking itself. I have to use the external mouse instead. The cursor jumps during I am typing sometimes. Otherwise, this is a good laptop to work with according to the acceptable quality of monitor, performance, light weight, and speed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good little machine!
This is the perfect laptop for everyone. It's light, small, and FAST. My unit has no problems, so don't listen to the guy below. Sony is constantly improving their units.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad keyboard; bad service; DVD problems; mouse problems
The most iritating thing is that you have to press two buttons to do PgUp, PgDn, Home and End.
After 20 minutes mouse starts clicking on its own.
After a month CD slowed down to 4x. It couldn't recognise lot of CDs and DVDs.
Repair disk were damaged.
Warrenty is 90 days unless you give Sony lot of personal info.
It took Sony's service 43 days to fix the unit.

Do not buy Sony laptop. ... Read more

Product Description

Sony provides business users with an ultra-portable notebook capable of superior performance, graphics handling and battery life. The PCG-V505DP incorporates the latest Intel Centrino technology for optimum speed, enhanced power saving and high-speed wireless communications. Yet despite being packed with these and other advanced features like fast CD-RW and potent ATI Mobility Radeon accelerated 3D graphics, the machine is extremely portable. It weighs just 1.99kg, and with small footprint it is ideal for users requiring real power but in a highly compact and convenient format. Because the V505DP is engineered with the most up to date Intel Centrino technology, it supports the 802.11g wireless networking standard. Not only is this five times faster than the earlier 802.11b protocol, it is also fully backwardly-compatible with it, allowing users to move freely between older wireless networks and those based on the latest hardware. In addition to ensuring exhaustively tested compatibility with 802.11b/g networks, Centrino also guarantees highly efficient power conservation. This means dramatically improved battery life, and underpins the V505DP's ability to run for up to 4.5 hours on a single full charge. ... Read more

Product Description

Z1X-Series ultra-portables are designed to provide business users with capabilities usually associated with full-sized notebooks. The high-end Z1XSP model has an additional feature that marks it out from the competition, namely its super-slim 9.5mm DVD-RW burner. This means users can now benefit from all the potential inherent in DVD-creation - but in a machine weighing just 2.1kg. Like all VAIO portables configured with a DVD burner, the Z1XP is also supplied with Sony's Click To DVD software, specially designed to make the DVD creation process as simple and as rapid as possible. The Z1XSP incorporates Intel's Centrino technology, combining sophisticated power conservation techniques with exhaustively tested wireless networking facilities. The Centrino specification used for the Z1X-Series offers 802.11b/g communications, five times faster than the original 802.11b wireless standard. The second great advantage offered by 802.11b/g is its backward compatibility with the old 802.11b protocol. Essentially, users can be confident that the Z1X-Series will work seamlessly with existing 802.11b radio networks as well as with newer, high-speed 802.11b/g hardware. The wireless capabilities of the Z1X-Series also extend to fully integrated Bluetooth for data-sharing with devices like Sony-Ericsson mobile phones and Sony Clie handhelds. The Z1X-Series models have SXGA+ high resolution screens, which also sets them apart from many other small-format portables. Other stand-out features include Memory Stick PRO slots and high-speed i.LINK (IEEE 1394 FireWire) ports for connecting to LCD projectors, digital cameras or camcorders, and scanners. In addition to integral security and high-speed transfer rates, Sony's Memory Stick PRO technology now allows up to 1GB of data at a time to be shared between compatible devices. ... Read more
