Warning, does not work with new 3850 model
We have been using this cable with our 3650 model systems to connect to a gps unit for data collection and for syncronizing out in the field with NT systems and it works great for that. However, we got some new 3850 ipaqs, and they have changed the connector, so it does not work with 3850, so just be forwarned!

If you travel, this is for you
So you got the cradle with your iPAQ...great. Now pack that cradle and its cords in your briefcase....see what I mean? The cradle takes up more room than the iPAQ.

I grabbed one of these cables after my first trip with the cradle. I was worried that the cradle would be damaged enroute. The cable is very sturdy and takes up a fraction of the space of the cradle. This cable is about 3.5 feet long, plenty of length to go from a CPU under your desk to the desktop.

You will need to carry this cable and the charger for your trips, but it's easier than carrying the bulky USB cradle.

Case is useless for a nacked iPAC
I was very disappointed with the carying case. First, a nacked iPAC just rattles around inside. It might be ok if you have an adaptor attached but I don't know because I don't have one. The belt loop is a joke as it isn't large enough to fit a normal belt even though the case itself is virtually empty with a nacked iPAC. The pen is nifty, but I don't personally need a pencil, black ink, and red ink ... only thing I've used is the stylus and the one on the iPAC is more convenient. So, the only thing in this pack that I will use is the screen protectors which should cost a lot less than this package.

the stylus is awesome- red, black pens, stylus, and pencil. Since I use three of those all day, it is great.
The screen protectors are fine
The little cleaner wipes are not necessary
The case is NOT universal and is completely useless as it does not fit a naked Ipaq.

The leather case fit perfectly, the Screen protectors work great, the stylus even had a pencil built in. Without a modem or ethernet card, your Pocket PC is just a PC companion product -- it must have a PC to get mail, surf, or message.

With a modem, your Pocket PC becomes a truly stand alone device.

This modem is the sturdiest design I've seen for dialing through a regular analog phone line. No frail parts to snap off, no weird connections that require you to purchase a different cable to connect. You'll be able to take this right out of the box, plug it in and get connected.

With this small, rugged modem I'm able to check my e-mail at times when hauling out my laptop would do -- waiting near the gate at an airport, at breaks in meetings, while visiting a client, etc. The ability to sync up my avantgo pages or get my most recent e-mail has been a great benefit to me, especially since I travel.

(Wondering why this review reads the same as the Pretec Modem review? It's the same gadget; this one just carries the Compaq brand.)

Answer to Steve's Question about the Compaq CF Modem
This is an excellent modem. I've never had a problem with it. However, it is almost identical to the CF modem by Pretec. I bought both and compared them. In fact, it is made for Compaq by Pretec. My advice to Steve, buy the Pretec modem and save some cash.

to those of you that have this CF modem
Can you tell me if it works with, or protecs your modem from, digital phone lines??? Does it have any surge protection? How is it better than the Xirtec CF modem? Please respond I am soon going to need to get a modem for my P/PC and want to get the best one and I have a IPAQ and don't know if I am better off sticking with COMPAQ products for compatability/warranty issues. thank you !

Adequate . . .
This product does an adequate job. I live in Japan, and it takes the lesser 100v outlets here just fine. But, I found that when I am charging my iPaq and I am using it at the same time, the charger gets overloaded, and shuts off for a few minutes until it cools down. So, that's annoying, but it does charge my ipaq when I let it sit there. And I haven't had any other problems with it--so, it's adequate.

Keyboard is a PAIN!
Not much to say about the screen protectors, styluses, or case, but the keyboard is built horribly! First of all, there is no information about how to put the keyboard on or take it off (even though it SHOULD be self-explanatory). I tried to put it on first without the black protector that comes with the iPAQ, but it was a very loose fit. So I put it on with the case, and it fit perfectly. The only problem is, I can't get the keyboard off now. The release button grabbed onto my iPAQ, but won't RELEASE! I can't sync-up to my computer anymore, or put it in ANY case because the keyboard is too thick.

When I called iConcepts tech support, I was told to press the release button. Since that obviously didn't work, they said there was nothing else they could do. ... Read more

Not enough attention to detail
The concept is attractive: charge your iPaq using the USB port on your notebook computer.

On my Toshiba Tecra 9000, there's not enough power output from the USB port to charge the iPaq 3650. Worse, Windows 2000 keeps thinking the cable is a Toshiba Wireless LAN adapter and tries to install drivers for it.

The plug for the iPaq isn't well designed: it's too large, tempting the user to use excessive force attaching the cable.

Works but....
I bought one of these because I have two cradles, one at work & one at home. Sounded like a nice idea. However, it only charges if the PC is on, even if the USB Hub is self-powered.
I use the power adapter that came with the my Compaq at work (where I need the juice) and use this gadget at home. So, it has worked out ok so far.
Buyer beware of this limitation.

It sounds really nice to be able to recharge your iPAQ with a USB cable, but in reality it's not that simple. Take a look at the sticker on the power supply (recharging cable) that came with your iPAQ--it puts out 2 amps of electricity. Most USB ports are only set up to handle .5 amps per port, so in order for this cable to properly recharge your iPAQ you have to plug this cable into an externally-powered USB hub, otherwise there just isn't enough juice for it to work. Hear, Hear.
It really is a bit much for a cable. It does what it says and gives you flexibility on the road...but if you can find a cheaper alternative...do that.

For [the $...] you could probably build your own and still go to a movie and have the big popcorn.

Does what it does, but $$$
Forget infrared sync, it's way slow compared to serial, and WAY, WAY slow compared to USB. If you travel, this is a must to keep your iPaq in sync with a laptop. Of course, if you don't take a laptop, it's useless and you should get a CF modem to dial up your ISP.

I can only rate 3 stars though because of the blatant price gouge Compaq is sticking us with. The USB cradle costs $10 LESS than just this cable, and it gives you more functionality.

Synchs as it should but no power
The USB cable synchs your iPaq as you would expect it to do. It does NOT charge your iPaq though so you'll still need either the cradle or the auto (car) charger for that. So don't think you can grab just the USB Sync cable and off you go. They should offer a simple plug charger along the same lines as this Sync cable.

Why bother use Infrared
I don't know why you would need to spend the money. When I'm on the road I just sync up using the Infrared connection. Most laptops these days have the IR port and this seems to be a reason to finally use it.

It's a bit slower but unless you are syncing MP3's on the road it seems to be fast enough. Fast enough even to sync e-mails with attachments. ... Read more

Great productivity enhancer
This keyboard has changed the way I use my iPaq. I've always used it for maintaining my calendar and task lists, but for most other things is was a used mainly for reference/read only. Any data entry intensive tasks were done either on my desktop and synced up, or through Pocket-Controller so I could use my desktop's keyboard.

With the slim keyboard I now use my iPaq for a lot more document creation. More notes. More to-dos. More emails, which can be sent the next time I sync up. Writing presentations with Pocket Slides is actually fun, now, and so is working with Word and Excel. Meetings have never been so productive.

I've tried cheaper keyboards and full-screen touch keyboards but they never worked well for me. In stark contrast this unit feels great, works great and I can even drop it into the cradle and sync up without having to remove the keyboard!
