4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
Not the best printer on the planet, but definitely a good value. I don't need a color laser or a photo printer, so it works for me.

Print quality is good for schematics, drafting, and other vector based images. Much better than a more expensive Cannon that I am replacing. I haven't tried it on any raster images, and probably never will. I also have no idea what kind of photo printing capabilities it has, because I just don't care.

Setup is very easy, it took me a total of a half hour to unpack the printer, assemble it, run cords, install the drivers on the host PC (which has the same speed processor as the printer), and install the drivers on another PC, and have the whole thing networked. Everything worked fine right out of the box on the first try.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stop! Don't buy this Printer!
I got this printer for large format printing. What I got was a large format headache. I spent an entire day trying to install this following all the instructions, I even called HP and they couldn't help me. I was using all the specified equipment, however one thing they didn't warn me about was you cannort share this printer without the additional purchase of the HP network server. After boxing this up for return I also noticed that this printer had already been returned once. It had two packing slip pouches, mine and someone else's. Bottom line - DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!! It cost me a day of work and all the shipping charges.

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay away from this printer!!!
I needed a large format printer for my small business, so I got online and reviewed seveal hp printers, and I "chatted" with one of their online reps. I was told this was the best printer for my needs. Little did I know that in order to use it I would have to redo my entire network setup. Well, after a full day of trying everything they told me to do, I am MORE than happy to PAY TO SHIP IT BACK!!!
DON'T BUY THIS PIECE OF CRAP PRINTER!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't ever buy this printer
I wanted a large format printer and so i was deciding between Canon, Epson and Hp. Finally, i decided to go with Hp, since i was using Hp officejet v40 all-in-one for about 3 years with no problem. I got Hp 9300 about 40 days back and suddenly today it stopped working. I just took 4 printouts in last 40 days and that it...I called the customer service and reported about the problem. According to them that printer was no longer going to work and i have to pay from my own pocket to ship it to california where they would repair it and send it back.
If you have a choice don't go for this printer. You will end up getting frustrated like i am now.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Printing Quality
Pro: The printing quality is exceptional. Better than any other deskjet printer I have tried. Especially if you set the quality mode to "best". Comes with "myPrintMileage" that keeps track of the printer usage and helps you plan the purchase of ink. ***Supports 13x19 paper size***.
Extremely easy to install.Took me 5 mins to set it up, and start printing on both Win XP and 2000 machine.

Cons: If you are printing "Best" the printing process is kinda slow. A full-colored 11x17 image took 1.25 mins to print.

Overall: An exceptional printers for the best price. I would highly recommend it. The very best printing quality. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars HP Software 4 Dummies would of been Helpful!
Had a few to many setbacks to get this to work properly on my IBM Think Pad, 300 MHz Pentium processor, with Windows 98. After many thoughts of throwing this burner out the window - I found out it's the HP Software that was causing me a lot of grief!

The burner works GREAT!! The HP Software disc 1 cd, kept freezing up (3 little words Ctrl. Alt. Del.) I also needed to download the updated version of Record Now & Dla for the 8200 series on HP's website. Had to go to the Control Panel, Change the Power Schemes in Power management Properties set all to Never & Shutdown all running programs except Explorer & I must shutdown and reboot after a complete burn or the next burn will freeze up & walla a successful burn!

I have now started using NeroMix software at Nero.com and bingo, no problemo. So guess what caused the missing star, out of a rating of 5 stars!

2-0 out of 5 stars USB is great, but it isn't for CD burning
I purchased this unit about two years ago, and it's something I regret. After trying this unit on three different machines under four operating systems (Windows XP, ME, 98 and Linux [Fedora Core]), getting it to cooperate with each system was anything but your standard "plug and play" operation. What HP's customer support doesn't tell you is that for some versions of the popular Nero CD-authoring suite, you are required to download a separate file in order for the software to detect your burner. Based on my experiences with Windows 98, I simply could not get this burner to interact with any burning applications other than to use it as a floppy-like storage drive. Even after upgrading to the latest Windows 98 drivers, the burner failed to behave as it should. Windows XP is a mixed bag, sometimes this burner works, sometimes it doesn't. While Windows was able to detect the drive, and provided you had the proper drivers, the drive was able to burn audio CDs under Windows Media Player. To burn other formats, Nero was required (the bundled software is garbage, don't even touch it), and often this required the Nero fix mentioned earlier (required for the latest version of Nero). Surprisingly, with an older version of Nero (5.5), the burner worked right out of the box. I was burning audio and data CDs, as well as a VCD and SVCD discs. Furthermore, the burner performed flawlessly for me under Windows ME, regardless of which version of Nero I installed.

Linux is just out of the question. While the drive was detected and installed automatically under Fedora Core 2, you simply cannot burn data to a USB-connected CDRW drive. From what I read on a Linux FAQ, USB cd-burning has yet to be implemented. So, for those of you looking for a cheap solution for CD authoring with Linux, this isn't it.

When this unit works, it's great. When this unit fails to work, expect to lose some hair trying to fix everything. USB is great, but it isn't for CD burning. Stick with an internal drive.

4-0 out of 5 stars Super easy to use

This writer is so easy to use! Plug and burn on. I use MusicMatch Jukebox (instead of the supplied software) and have had a 99.5% success rate in the over three years I have had it. I have never had to call tech support and only wish I would have waited until the price came down.

4-0 out of 5 stars almost perfect
yes, as long as you have the rite software. used it for around 2 years, and still burns happily 99% of the time!! Forget the softwares supplied by HP.... the just havent worked for me.

1-0 out of 5 stars Steer Clear
This burner has been one of the most frustrating semblances of technology that I have ever possessed. I got it a year and a half ago, and it worked fine for a few months, but now successfully burns a CD about once in every four or five attempts, wasting all the other CDs. It has vague error messages with unhelpful "troubleshooting." I don't burn all that often, but I've finally had enough with such a tempernmental machine and am on the market for a replacement. Save yourself the money and the irritation and buy something else. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Love it!!!!
I traded up from an Ipaq 3600 - it was getting too slow for what I needed. I hated having to use the expansion pack to add memory- I'm in the medical field and have 5 full textbooks on it- had to put it on the memory card. The expansion pack makes it too big and bulky and heavy. So I wanted a PDA with more memory and an integraded memory card.
I left my 3600 charger in a hotel room and was forced to go manual for about 6 weeks! It was horrible!!!
My new 3900 is wonderful- fast! I use Agenda Fusion for my calendar functions and the 3600 used to seize up all the time. I can put photos of my kids on the 3900 as well and all my texts are now right on the hard drive and I still have tons of space left over!
I had planned to get a Toshiba before I read the reviews of the 3900- I can't afford sudden and total memory loss and I need a durable machine. I dropped my 3600 several times (after it was already slow) and it had no change in function.
Thanks to everyone whose reviews convinced me to upgrade my Ipaq.
Customer support from Compaq has been wonderful in the past also..... we have a laptop as well that has needed servicing- it's very simple. The 3600 seized up twice and had to be sent back and they replaced it no problem. That was another factor in sticking with them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great and awesome HandHeld PC
Words cannot even begin to describe this handheld pc. Well, I'm over exagerating a little. If you wanted to get a pocket pc, I suggest you get an Ipaq. It has the most amazing backlight and it's amazingly easy to use. There's hardly nothing that can't be done with it since it can be expanded with different kinds of expansion slots. Buy an Ipaq.

My main reason for writing this review was to actually thank the merchant that provided me her great service. Since it was too late for me to rate her using rate seller, I'll just rate her service here. I give yong2_wen2 a 5. Although I recieved the incorrect item at first, I was able to return the Ipaq and get the correct model with all shipping paid. yong2_wen2 was very responsive to every email I sent providing me with great customer service.

1-0 out of 5 stars Attractive but abysmally frustrating
Got this refurbished from Costco. Good screen etc. BUT, the power runs out every time you turn your back on it and there IS NO BACKUP (watch-type) battery. When the power runs out, you LOSE every program you ever installed, and the software walks you through an insultingly stupid nano-tutorial before you can use it again. Stupid design of the decade. Bought a stowaway keyboard for it and whenever the keyboard got near it, the Ipaq got flaky. Tonight the thing died again and I destroyed it (dead, it makes a better work of art than it ever did a PDA). Reason: I had to spend more time and effort reviving it than using it. A great concept with severely crappy reliability.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
This is a great piece of equipment. i would recommend it for any working person with a full schedule. you can use it for anything! i've even used it for sound testing for churches and such. Buy this product! its worth the money!

4-0 out of 5 stars COMPAQ IPAQ GOOD TILL IT LAST
i have had my share of POCKET PCs, PDA and even the CE devices. My very first PDA is the Casio Pocket Viewer, next is the Casio BE-300, after that i had my very first COMPAQ 3850 and now its the COMPAQ 3970.

I kinda like my COMPAQ 3970, it has all the good features youre looking for a pocket PC, bluetooth, picture viewer, calendar, notes, contacts, tasks... but maybe thats all there is.

I enjoyed it for almost a year, im just weary about how COMPAQ will adress this issue, "WHAT IF MY COMPAQ WOULD BE DEAD AFTER A YEAR", this problem keeps buggin me, any problems with my compaq would be a disater, its a timebomb waiting to explode and shatter all your informations into dirt. THe problem is the battery it works well now, but what will happen in the future.

Its expensive the time i bought it, but now newer models are coming in with more features. SO if i were you, buy the newer models, they're more reliable. ... Read more

148. HP 318 2MP Digital Camera
by Hewlett Packard
list price: $243.99

Asin: B00005OUJW
Catlog: Photography
Manufacturer: Hewlett Packard

Average Customer Review: 3.77 out of 5 stars

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed to make 2-megapixel digital photography affordable, Hewlett-Packard's PhotoSmart 318 is a good choice for those seeking a simple, basic camera with the image quality to replace a film point-and-shoot.

Optics and Resolution

The 318 uses a 2-megapixel sensor that captures enough detail for crisp 8-by-10-inch prints. For the typical family photographer, 2 megapixels is a great balance between price and performance. If you typically make poster-sized prints or crop the edges off your photos to improve the composition, you'll want a higher-resolution model, but if you simply point and shoot, 2 megapixels is ample.

While many cameras in this price range use a simple and inexpensive focus-free or fixed-focus lens, the 318 uses a true autofocus system, resulting in sharper photos under more shooting situations. Lens aperture ranges from f2.8 to f8, and the camera will focus on objects as close as 8 inches from the lens. A 2x digital telephoto zoom is among the camera's features, but remember that digital zoom tends to reduce the sharpness and detail of your image, so it's best used sparingly.

To compose your images, either use the traditional camera viewfinder or the 1.75-inch LCD display (which is also used to review the shots you've taken). Having both types of viewfinders offers the best of both worlds: if you're used to using a film camera or want to conserve battery life, use the viewfinder. If you want to see exactly the picture you'll be capturing, use the LCD display.

More Features

The PhotoSmart 318 is clearly designed for point-and-shooters who think simplicity is more important than having a huge assortment of advanced features. Photo quality is adjustable, there's a self-timer, and the flash can be switched on, off, or set to red-eye reduction, but otherwise, the camera automatically sets everything.

Power

Four AA batteries provide power, and a set of alkaline batteries is included. Like virtually all digital cameras, the 318 can exhaust a set of alkaline batteries in no time, which is why we recommend lithium or rechargeable batteries instead. If you use the camera once a month or less, lithium AA batteries are a logical idea, since they'll hold their charge for years when sitting in an unused camera. If you use the camera more often, then the lithium batteries don't make economic or environmental sense--we recommend getting a set or two of rechargeable nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries and a charger. To ensure you'll always be ready for action, keep one set in the camera and the other set in the charger. In a pinch, you can use alkaline batteries, but we recommend turning off the LCD display in this case to extend the battery life as much as possible.

Storage and Transfer

In an effort to keep costs down, HP ships the 612 with 8 MB of internal memory instead of a removable memory card. This solution has its pros and cons. It's less expensive, and you never have to worry about leaving the memory card at home (the digital equivalent of forgetting the film), but it also means you need to install HP's software and USB cable on your computer to transfer images because you can't use a dedicated card reader. The 8 MB of internal memory holds approximately 20 images at the camera's default settings.

Though the internal memory is reusable, it does limit the number of pictures you can take before you need to return to your computer to transfer your photos. For more capacity, you'll need to add more memory. Fortunately, the camera comes with a slot for standard CompactFlash memory cards.

Size

At 4.5 by 2.7 by 1.7 inches and 8 ounces, the 318 is relatively compact, making it easy to bring along in a purse or pocket.

Contents and Recommended Accessories

The package includes the camera, USB cable, CD with drivers and HP photo software, four AA alkaline batteries, wrist strap, and camera user guide.

Everything you need to get started is included in the box, but we recommend these accessories to make the most of your camera: a carrying case, a set of NiMH rechargeable size AA batteries, and a higher-capacity SmartMedia memory card. Compatible accessories for this camera are listed near the top of this page. --Shane Burnett

Pros:

  • 2-megapixel picture quality at an affordable price
  • Autofocus lens superior to the fixed-focus lens found in many competitors' cameras

Cons:

  • Very limited set of features
  • Internal memory and disposable batteries are fine for occasional users, but more frequent use will require upgrades to these accessories

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BUY
I spent months researching digital cameras before deciding on the HP 318, and the time spent was well worth it. The camera itself is little, but is big on quality and features. I love the 2X zoom, and the full-color preview screen provides good display clarity, plus the ability to magnify the displayed image. Using the features built into the camera is incredibly user-friendly, too. Even if you've never used a digital camera before, you won't find this one difficult to use, but that's not to imply that this camera is in any way 'simplistic' when it comes to quality. You'll also have a hard time finding another camera that provides 2.31 MP for the same price. I recommend buying a 64MB flash card to go with it. At the lowest quality setting, you'll be able to store nearly 1,000 pics on it (another great feature about this camera- you have 3 quality settings to choose from). All in all, one of the best investments I've ever made.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent value, great quality
After much comparison shopping, my wife and I bought this camera just before the birth of our baby. It was in the delivery room, capturing those first special moments. I've been using the camera for almost four months now and I'm very satisfied with it. Friends and family constantly comment about the good quality of the pictures we email them. Also, the resolution of the camera produces beautiful prints. (We use Shutterfly to print our digital pics.) I would recommend rechargeable batteries and a flash memory card to get full enjoyment of your camera. A good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent entry level digital camera
Great for the beginner. Clarity of prints is excellent at 4x6 and even 5x7. Very user friendly. The software is excellent and is my preference to make quick adjustments, crop, and print into album pages and varied size prints. The only down side is the lag between shots but this is a small inconvenience considering the quality and price. The best pics come from inside day shots. Outside, the camera has some difficulty deciding on exposure given varied light intensity. Inside night shots have somewhat the same problem but they are still quite acceptable though one needs to almost use the LCD to get a clearer perspective of what you will get. This camera is actually fairly easy on batteries. I can get 500+ shots per set of batteries.

I did upgrade to a Nikon Coolpix 880 within a few months of buying the camera so if you are an intermediate photographer you'll probably not want to start here. Still I won't sell mine as it is a great backup camera. For most novice's I'd recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars More than 2 Years Later And...
...I'm still using this camera with no plans to upgrade.

It's a great buy and a great camera. If you're new to digital photography, you won't find this camera difficult to use and will be amazed with its clarity and easy-to-use advanced features. I have had no problem with back-lighting or finding the pictures too dark in quality, as some people have commented upon.

Also pleasantly surprising is the sturdiness of the unit. I've been using it since January 2002 and have used it more times than I can count. Being a motorcycle enthusiast, I've packed it into saddle bags, which subjects it to considerable vibration, and it still performs flawlessly; have had amateurs borrow it (sometimes without me even knowing it); let it (unknowingly) sit outside on our patio table one damp night in August; and have packed it in luggage bumping across some of the worst roads in Pennsylvania only to use it and have no problems at all.

Like most digital cameras, this one is not easy on batteries-- which is why I purchased two rechargeable sets and take the charger with me when I travel. But I also figure that the cost of AA batteries is considerably easier on the wallet than say a gallon of gasoline or paying to have traditional film developed these days, and continue to use my sweet little HP 318 non-stop. As of now, I have hundreds of photographs permanently recorded, and those memories of family are precious.

As an information technology professional, I would not hesitate to recommend this to even the most technologically-challenged person. Hey, even my mom, who is in her 70s, has used it successfully, and to this day, she still can't operate her VCR or upgrade her anti-virus program without help. I think that's 'nuff said about this camera.

2-0 out of 5 stars No worth to buy
I have two of this camera because it is not expensive, but regret to buy them. Reasons:
1) images too dark to make it unusable in many cases.
2) one of my camera has auto focusing fail after half a year rare use!
3) use battery quick. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars HP ScanJet 8250 - Document feeder jams too much
Don't buy this product if you really need the document scanner to scan photos. It consistantly jams and misaligns photos. The software included and other scanning functions work great, but the document loader is not good for photos.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid like the plague
The main problem with this scanner is its below average scanning software. The scanning area of the preview is a mere 15% of the screen (and if you'd like a close up, prepare for a rescan of the document!). And forget about using a third party scanning applications, nobody but HP will be able to use this piece of junk.

Contrast in the scans are by default bad, making the content of the document difficult to read. You can adjust the contrast in the first page (although it is a time consuming process, and since the document scan is a mere 15% of the total screen area, you are left second guessing the optimal settings). But believe it or not, by the time you scan your second page, the settings will go back to default, forcing you to readjust them.

If you think you can scan a document to a third party application and manipulate it with it via TWAIN (such as Windows Imaging), and save yourself the pain of having to deal with HP Scan, think again. You will end up with a beautiful picture of THE LAST PAGE ("oh yes, this is by design" - HP Technician).

The ADF is prone to paperjams, and they are tough and time consuming to clear. Only the smoothest paper will allow pass through without problems.

I open a case with HP support (case no. 7161364157). They told me a technician would call back (this was a month ago). Still waiting for the call.

HP really dropped the ball with this twinky. If you are planning to buy a document scanner, this is not the way to go. If you are planning to buy a photograph scanner, I suggest one of Epson's Perfection scanners, and save yourself 500 dolars worth of junk.

5-0 out of 5 stars Previous Reviewer Needs Correction
After reading the review "correction and complaint" I was trying to figure out where this person was coming from. He/she is incorrect on all their points.

1) The color rendition is incredible and looks nearly identical to the item scanned.

2) You do not have to choose the image size. When I scan a letter document, the scanner knows it. And when I scan a legal document, it knows that too. I don't even know how to trick the thing.

3) As for the grayscale having to be chosen every time: Under "scan settings" you can choose your default settings. You can tell it to default to 1 bit or 8 bit grayscale, or many different color options. This will be the default setting if you elect not to change them every time you scan.

I wonderered if this reviewer had just opened the box and didn't bother to read the manual or play with the software settings before posting. Or maybe he's a Canon person.

Oh well. Just thought I'd dispell some untruths on the scanjet 8250. In my opinion and use, it has been a great, full featured scanner!

2-0 out of 5 stars correction and complaint
The technical data is wrong. The scanning area is 8 1/2 by 14. The auto document feeder scans both sides.
The color scans are below average. It's amazing how distorted and super saturated the colors are, considering the price. It took me hours to fiddle with all the slide bars and dials to come up with an image that more closely represents that actual colors of the image. It took 5 seconds for my $80 Canon flatbed to come up with an almost perfect image. You would think at this price, HP would have spent a little more time fine tuning the software. When scanning on the HP, you have to choose the size of the image every time you use the auto feeder otherwise everything comes out legal size. The default choice is true color, it is necessary to choose grayscale for every scan if black and white documents are going to be scanned. Now let me figure this out, this scanner is aimed at offices primarily for document scans and grayscale has to be chosen every time? The color scanning is so poor, why is it the default if that is not what this scanner is made for. I have to pick grayscale every time I scan. That is a hassle. You can make a custom profile that can be programmed to the buttons on the front of the scanner, but the buttons don't work for Paperport which comes with the scanner. The auto feeder only reads one side at a time. It flips the pages over and reads the other side. It is cool to watch, but I wonder how long the intricate workings of this mechanism will last... The pages have to be reasonably sturdy and thick otherwise the papers jam and everything has to be rescanned. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars It works some of the time, but not useful
As a current RIM Blackberry user, I was looking forward to getting my IPAQ. Its a neat unit with a great screen, but I have two issues:

1. Its not reliable - requires hard resets occasionally, does not sync up occasionally, does strange things, battery life is low. Learn how to do a hard reset and try one whenever strange things occur (like the battery seems dead).
2. Its not that useful. Mail and calendar have to be synced up with corporate Outlook thru docking or bluetooth - no use of wifi or internet. Text entry via stylus or on screen keyboard is clumsy. Screen is not big enough for real web browsing. Unit is large and hard to carry on belt. Documentation is poor - you have a pile of brochures and addendums and a hardware manual on CD. Adding any communication technology, eg cellular, requires a bulky sleeve.

Overall, it does not represent value for $ for me. However, I am comparing it to a RIM Blackberry that works with my company's enterprise email and calendar so your results may vary.

Update: Had to return the unit. Too many resets and restores from disk, too many problems - not worth the hassle. This is not ready for prime time yet.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Value/Powerful Pocket PC
These guys who are palm lovers just have a hard time switching to the Pocket PC! I am a switcher. The transition was tough at first back a couple of years ago. The Palm OS is surely faster and more user friendly but has much less to offer. This IPAQ is a powerful one and the screen quality, handwritting recognition and wifi options are unmatched by any Palm device. I have not found much use yet for the Bluetooth and the security features are good but I don't know that I need them. Still, what a great tool for word processing, spreadsheets, web surfing and more. Lighten up Palm boy!

2-0 out of 5 stars Big problems for the $$ - otherwise it could be great.
I purchased the iPaq 5455 one year ago, directly from HP when it first hit the market, paying $649 plus $200 for a 3 year top of the line warranty. I have had several problems with the unit. Starting with the display on the unit going out only after a month or two of receiving it. The next problem was with the battery loosing its charge. Most recently, I have been having the recurring problem of the unit locking up not powering on. And like others, I have never been able to sync my info wirelessly.

I have placed several calls to tech support. I have troubleshooted the unit while on the phone with them and even sent the unit in for repair a month ago, in which I did not get a replacement unit, although my extended warranty states that I should. I received the unit back from repair and the documentation stated that no parts were replaced. Knowing that I definitely had a problem with the unit, I called tech support to see what was repaired. I was told a big lie that the battery was changed and the ENC part was replaced. Looking at my unit now, I see that it is the same battery that I had when I sent it in for repair.

Thinking that all was fixed with my unit, I downloaded all of my information. The next day I experienced the same problem with the unit not powering on with the power button. I placed another call to tech support in which the tech and myself troubleshooted the unit. The tech told me to hard boot my unit which erased all of my data. I was told not to install the one 3rd party software that I had installed to monitor the situation. I once again reinstalled my information without the 3rd party software. Again, my unit would not power on. Again, I called tech support and angrily described my situation.

Finally, the tech tells me that I will be sent a REFURBISHED unit. I received the refurbished unit two days ago and encountered the same problem once I loaded all of my data on to it. HP tech support has you to hard reset the unit to erase all data, which appears to make the unit work properly, but once the data is loaded, the problems begin. Today I called tech support and told them I am returning the refurbished replacement unit and keeping my original to see what their customer care department does to satisfy me.

I purchased the unit because I felt it would be an asset to my busy professional life, but it has been nothing but a hassle. I have sent several email complaints to HP customer support and finally to the CEO Carly Fiorina. I got a reply email from her address stating that someone would be in contact with me.

Each call and every email, I have gotten the same script of "we apologize for your inconvenience". The tech support department located in India is very unhelpful and they speak to you as if you were an idiot.

The unit has some slick features, but right now I am very dissatisfied and frustrated.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not good
I got the HP5455 2 months ago. The battery life is horrible, interface is awkward, and form-factor too large.... After dealing with the thing for 2 months, I've spent another $500 to replace it with a new palm (which I love). Stay away from the HP5455.

3-0 out of 5 stars Excellent features but the battery died after 4 months
The HP iPAQ 5455 Pocket PC has some very good features as you would have seen in other reviews but the 2 things I did not like about it are:
(1)I never got the biometric reader to work.
(2)The battery died after 4 months of use, it did not even switch on when I installed the expansion pack (which was an additional expense)

The bottom line: buy a cheaper model without the biometric reader and save some money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great printer, but the software and tech support needs work
I purchased the 2410Xi last month because I could not believe what an amazing multi-function printer you got for so little money. Plus, my experience with HP printers has always been of the highest quality, so I tend to prefer them over other brands when I can afford them. Setup of the printer itself was amazingly simple. Setup of the software was another matter, here is what happened:

1. I could not install the software initially because I did not have 1GB of free space on my C: drive. I mainly use C: for Windows system files, and I try to keep all my data and programs on G: for safety purposes.
2. After un-installing some of my favourite applications from C: and re-installing them to G:, I managed to clear just enough space for the install program to be happy. Specifying an alternate drive was never an option, which is ridiculous in this day and age.
3. The install program crashed with an access denied error, so I used HP's recover option and reversed the installation. FYI: I was performing the install as ADMINISTRATOR.
4. I did some research and found out that this is a common error and you have to go into your registry to alter security settings for the installation to work.
5. After doing this, I ran the install again and received a different error pointing to one of the sub-program installation tasks failing because of a memory error. At this point I call tech support.
6. Tech support is a young lady in India reading from a web page. We'll call her Reena for the purposes of this document. Reena tells me not to use the Recovery option when the install fails because she is going to have me uninstall everything by hand.
7. I follow all her steps, only to find once again that the install program won't work because I now don't have 1GB of space on C: again. I asked her what happened to my free space, and why her uninstall didn't get back the space that HP had used up. She did not understand what I said and said I had to call Microsoft to learn how to free up space on my computer. Obviously, she is just trying to get me off the phone ASAP. So I tell her to hang on, and I delete my beloved PhotoShop from my computer just so we can continue with the installation of a printer.
8. We ran the install program another 7 or 8 times and received 2 or 3 different errors. The persistent one was a critical error, which she was unable to resolve. At this point, 3 hours later, she says that she has to go and speak to her supervisor. She comes back on the line a few minutes later and says that I have to completely reformat my system and re-install Windows XP. Obviously, this is unacceptable to me because that would take me weeks with all of my programs and data. So I ask to speak to the supervisor.
9. The supervisor, Raj, tells me that there is a problem with my CD and he has to send me another one. So I give him my address and he promises it will arrive in 2 business days. I receive a new CD one week later, the version of the software they send me is older than the one that shipped with the printer. I try the install again with the new CD and get the same error.
10. I call tech support again and get a young gentleman in Canada. He points me to a different uninstall routine and modifies it to have a 'level 4' uninstall. The system is rebooted, and we go through the install process again, and this time it actually works. It seems all those previous installs screwed up my configuration.
11. I hang up with Tech Support, and 3 seconds later the message 'StorageSync cannot access this drive. Abort, Retry, Cancel'. It seems the printer is clashing with my external SimpleTech USB hard drive. I now have to leave my SimpleTech unplugged whilst the printer is in use because it seems the printer has a drive of some kind built into it also which keeps clashing with my other external USB drive. I haven't yet plucked up the desire to call tech support again.

Having used the PSC2410 a number of times now, I can say that it is an absolute delight compared to my old Canon Multipass C5500. My old Canon used to stop printing at random times, it would refuse to recognise my print cartridges on various occasions, and I had various communication problems between it and the computer. The PSC2410 has an LCD screen and you can pretty much do everything using that and the built-in menus. The flatbed scaner is much easier to use than my old scanner which only accepted paper feeds. And the images come out as crisp and clear as the originals. As usual, HP has made a great printer, which is in my opinion the cornerstone of their company's business and deservedly so.

If you are going to install this printer on a Windows machine, follow these instructions before you do so and make sure you have a minimum of 1GB free on the C drive. If you do that, you should be OK:

http://h20015.www2.hp.com/hub_search/document.jhtml;jsessionid=5HZKIBH3T5DEJQFIKSBENZQ?reg=na&cc=us&docName=bpu00682&lc=en

I hope this saves you a week of frustration and leads to a more enjoyable experience with your shiny new printer. Having problems like this with a USB printer is quite ridiculous, and it feels like HP rushed the software to get to market quickly. Let's hope they improve technical support, and also improve the testing of their software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great printer! Just one flaw...
One flaw: the paper type autodetect doesn't always work correctly, despite using HP paper. I finally figured out that manually selecting Normal paper fixes the s-l-o-w printing problem I was having. Another reviewer said he fixed this problem by uninstalling and reinstalling the HP software; that didn't work for me. I took off 1 star strictly for this flaw.

Outside of that it's been a great printer. Installation was trivial on WinXP Pro SP1 (Athlon 64, lots of RAM and free disk space). It's soooo nice to have printing and scanning with only 1 USB cable and 1 power plug, not to mention 1-button copying. As always, make sure you've got all the Windows Updates installed before installing the HP software and temporarily disable your virus scanner.

5-0 out of 5 stars HP products are great
My computer came with a Lexmark printer, copier, scanner, fax machine. It was junk.I still have it brand new in the box.I got this HP machine and it's great!

4-0 out of 5 stars Had no problems with this machine
I love this machine. But then again I have not yet asked it do what other posters have. I don't have a digital camera yet and I basically use it as a printer, since my 952c died and as a fax. The only thing I did not understand is that I thought i installed it properly and one day my computer treated it as if it were a new piece of hardware, when i have had this machine for about a year. I can't speak for the scanner because I bought a more sophisticated resolution-wise Hp scanner before I bought this. Overall I am happy with this machine. My only other problem with purchasing from target is that you all do not offer extended warranties, like best buy (where I bought my machine).

4-0 out of 5 stars HP psc 2410 So far, so good...
I shopped around on line and followed the advice of numerous Amazon posters. I was replacing an HP psc 950 and wanted a similar device. I narrowed my choices down to the 2410 and the 6110. They were priced equally. I finally settled on the 2410 because of the capability of viewing/printing digital photos directly. (The older 950 didn't handle MMC cards.) To get that feature with the 6000 series, you have to move up to the 7000 series and pay another $100 or more.

As a Mac user I was concerned about software. One of the reasons I replaced my trusty 950 was the fact that it was constantly giving me software problems. HP considers the 950 obsolete and is not helpful with answering software snafus. Once I purchased the 2410 I followed the advice found here and downloaded the software (6.3.4) for the 2410 from the HP website, rather than using the supplied CD (6.3.0). With a high-speed internet connection this is a breeze.

One thing that may be obvious, but no one tells you, is to uninstall the software from the old HP system first--assuming you're replacing a older HP. I did that using the 950 HP all-in-one software and it worked flawlessly--as best as I can tell so far.

My only complaint with the 2410 is similar to a complaint found in another review: it's noisy and not as solid (read heavy) as the 950 and tends to shift when it does its thing. If you can live with that, or find a way to stabilize it, I think you'll find the 2410 is good value for money. It prints and copies, scans, faxes, and does it all for less than $300. Many reviewers have complained about HP software for all-in-ones. But I noticed that most of those who complained were Windows users. HP seems to one of those companies that at least cares about us Mac users. My experience with HP software on Mac all-in-ones has been pretty positive, first with the 950 and so far with the 2410.

I have yet to see how long the ink cartridges last (an annoyance with the 950). The 2410 uses different cartridges which are about the same price as the old ones but they are "smaller" and don't appear to hold much ink. The 2410 also uses a separate cartridge for photos which the 950 did not. I haven't tried that one (HP 58) yet, but the HP 57 produced colors that were equal in quality to the HP 78 (used with the 950), as best as I can tell.

The fact that the 2410 doesn't come with a cable wasn't a concern for me since I was replacing a machine that already had one. ... Read more

I have two computers and wanted to a network one printer for both. This proved to be the best solution! My only problem was that I run XP and forgot to shut off the firewall that blocks network activity. Once I got that sqaured away it worked like a charm! The print qulaity is excellent! Since each compuuter has a firewall product installed with the virus program there was no problem in turning off the built in XP one found in My Computer Properties.

4-0 out of 5 stars HP6127 in mixed environment
Purchased this printer online and performed install in mixed (i.e. Mac & PC) environment office using wizards on install CD. Installation was virtually automatic. Even our IT people has no complaints about it.

Have experienced no difficulties printing with either Mac or PC printing. I think this is a great printer for the price given the features (built-in networking, duplexing, etc.). It give good ouput at standard settings and great at normal and above. Of course as with most HP inkjets the ink is pricy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not for Macs using a Network
This printer prints very well but I wouldn't recommend it for the Macintosh OS (any Mac OS). I spent over 50 hours of troubleshooting and talking to their support team only to find out that this printer wouldn't print multiple digital camera pictures on a page using the network connnection. *I've been testing printers for the last 19 years.

The printer prints fine using the USB port but that defeats the purpose of buying a printer with a built in network card. They wouldn't take it back. I tested it on 5 different Macs without success but support said they couldn't duplicate the problem.

It works great on Windows XP.

No more HP products for me, ever.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some problems with MacOS X compatibility
This is great hardware! From Windows I can print on this printer from my office, with the printer at home behind NAT. The output looks great, and everything works as promised. However, MacOS X support (driver version 2.3) is flawed by the following problems:

1. On Jaguar, MacOS 10.2, the duplex implementation is ridiculous. If you print six copies of a four page document, you get side one on BOTH sides of three sheets of paper, side two on both sides of the next three, etc. This problem is fixed with MacOS 10.3 (Panther).

2. Problems in the design of the SNMP MIB it uses prevent MacOS connections when behind NAT, so to print remotely you need to disable the SNMP queries. This option is available on Windows, but is tantalizingly greyed out on the Mac.

3. Manual IP configuration is by address instead of name, so use in environments that use dynamic IP address assignment is unnecessarily limited. Again, not a problem on Windows.

4. Version 2.1 cannot get top margin correct. Be sure to upgrade to version 2.3 of the MacOS X drivers. Be sure to remove older installers from your system first, because the installer includes aliases that can accidently resolve to compoments in the old installer and really cause problems!

5. It complains about needing more ink LONG before the cartridges are empty. I did 250 pages of newsletters (mixed photos and black text) after it reported my ink was running low, before I saw any signs of running low in the printoutl. I can ignore the warning on MacOS X, but on MacOS 9 the warning is enforced by a making it stop printing in the middle of a page (wasting the page), spit out the paper, and put up a complaint about an "empty" cartridge. On Windows XP, I told it to ignore SNMP and it never complains about ink, ever.

Because it took so long after the printer was introduced to fix the MacOS X problems, I question HP's commitment to MacOS X, and advise against purchasing this printer for Macintosh users. However, it's great for Windows, and nice enough for a multi-platform networked house or small business.

5-0 out of 5 stars Got a network? Get this printer!
If you have a home network, you NEED this printer! Images are fast and clean, and ink is widely available. Even photos look surprisingly good for this standard printer. (Only problem with photo printing is that it is not borderless). But where this printer really shines is that it connects directly to your Ethernet network. Any computer on your network can print to it. No extra hardware to buy, no flaky print-servers, no printer sharing headaches, and no special cables -- just plug the Cat-5 wire directly into the printer and GO! (The confusing information about an "optional print server" is for a wireless network, which is totally unnecessary). ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Good Scanner - Only Buy with An Extended Warranty
This is my 2nd HP scanner. The first lasted 6 years, this one 6 months. The scanner seemed a little slow but did a good job of scanning. I don't use one everyday so I don't need a high end scanner. At light usage I did expect the scanner to last longer than 6 months. Since this is a relatively inexpensive scanner, repairing it is not cost effective. My next scanner will be from Canon which I have found out has a 1-year warranty rather than only 90 days.

1-0 out of 5 stars scanjet 3670 by HP
still no drivers for mac os 10.3 and upgrades (Panther)
no photoshop plug-in too.
and even for mac OS 10.2 drivers are not downloadable by the net:
you must contact HP for them to send it to you by the post office and they will make you pay for that!!!

sorry but if you want an universal scan that work on several different computers try another one !

Amazon.com Product Description

The Hewlett-Packard K60 OfficeJet is an all-in-one high-quality printer, fax, scanner, and copier that's ideal for the home or office. Compact and efficient, this unit is Internet ready and easy to use. All functions are designed to work together, which saves you space, time, and money. You can even operate functions simultaneously.

The K60's printer delivers terrific photorealistic images. That's due to Hewlett-Packard's PhotoREt III technology and to a color resolution of 2,400 x 1,200 dpi and a black resolution of 600 x 600 dpi. Thus you're assured rich, vibrant colors and crisp text. The printer accepts a wide range of papers and sizes. It prints black text at up to 9 ppm and color at 7 ppm.

The fax works via the front panel. It has its own output bin and an automatic 20-page document feeder. It is compatible with answering machines, has memory send and receive capability, auto redial, send, and PC fax. Transmission rate is 6 seconds per page.

The K60 has an exceptionally high-quality scanner that turns originals into photo-quality reproductions. Subtle contrasts and vibrant colors come in part from the 2,400 dpi resolution. A touch of a button is all you need to place a scan into a selected software application or e-mail. Common editing functions are built in, so separate editing applications for scanned images are not necessary. Also, the K60 offers faster scanning previews that won't keep you waiting.

Excellent color and black-only copies are made at 7 copies per minute in black and 6 copies per minute in color. Like the fax component, the copier has its own output bin and a 20-page automatic document feeder. You can make reductions and enlargements from 50 to 200 percent. The K60 comes backed with a one-year limited warranty. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars K60 or K80?
I have seen previous reports on K60, and decided to buy a K80, with TWO COPY BUTTONS, black and colour copy.
The machine is not intuitive to use, but it does what you would expect, with two advantages against K60: modem speed, and black copy key.
It has a major problem wich most users will not detect!
It works well when driven by HP suplied software, but if we try to scan from MS Office XP "image scanning" and some other aplications, the machine scans only the first page, ejecting all the others, forcing us to feed the document page by page by hand.
Quite frustrating for a machine with a 20 page feeder.
It will became a great machine with a new modem and a driver patch, unfortunately not available for the moment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great machine at the right price.
The K60 is an excellent printer, fast, clean and quiet. Its fax features are excellent, with the 14.4 kbs fax-modemallowing for 6 seconds per page faxing. The scanning clarity and speed is among the best of any sheetfed unit I've seen, and copying with and without enlargement is also pretty darned amazing at this price. However, what really makes the whole pkg so nice is the software that runs quietly in the background and only pops up when needed. When it makes its appearance, it really simplifies whatever task you're working on and obviates the need for any kind of manual. (A slightly faster printer with 3 seconds per page faxing is available as the model K80)

3-0 out of 5 stars No More HP For Me!
GREAT machine other than TWO MAJOR PROBLEMS!It will NOT copy in black & white (unless you SCAN and THEN PRINT).Imagine the time & money wasted when you need to make a quick copy of notes from a yellow notepad . . . since the K60 prints the entire copy with the yellow background!Even though I bought my K60 directly from HP, I believe the sales rep forgot to mention this to me . . . and the COPY button on the front panel says "Black/Color"!The OTHER PROBLEM is that it sometimes (more often than any other printer I've owned) pulls two sheets of paper through to print.(There is a provision to allow you to adjust for paper types but this is time-consuming!)I'm now looking for a 2nd PRINTER for another location and a SCANNER but you can bet they WILL NOT BE HP!

5-0 out of 5 stars ...it can copy in B&W but it's not straightforward.

...I like my K-60. It's slow but not excessively so. It's dependable and it's quality is excellent.

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the Most Useful Tools in my Home Office
My OfficeJet K60 is a workhorse and I love it.I use it for my home office. It is fast and reliable.

Pros:Easy to get ink refills, relatively small desktop "footprint," excellent device-to-computer interface

Cons:Misc. driver issues with Win2k, difficulty running under Win2k with parallel cable (I had to switch to USB), particularly excellent fax software.

One additional thing to note:make sure you think through your copying/scanning requirements before purchasing this or any other unit. This scanner scans like a fax - its great, but you can't scan a page out of a book or magazine without removing it.Machines that have the flat top for scanning from books are usually larger and take up more space on your desk, so there is a tradeoff. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars flaky software, veriable hardware issues.
Note: This is a review based on working with the HP cp1700ps for one year at ~20 pages per week.

Strengths: Great when it works, sturdy construction
Weaknesses: Buggy hardware, buggy software, expensive ink.

Summary:
Our HP color inkjet printer cp1700ps worked fantastic most of the time, great output, good colors, fast printing but with a slow first page.

After two months it started making loud high pitch noises with every head-passing, HP support knows the issue; it's not easy to resolve. After six months of regularly cleaning a specific area, the noise no longer appears, the squeak causing area must be worn out.

The postscript option, which I bought as well, is not worth its money, it did work for about a month, printing with it was extremely slow on a system with 1Gigabyte RAM. Since then it keeps crashing on Windows XP at system startup, re-installs have never worked.

After six months the printer started complaining that cartridges are empty when in fact they are half full, really annoying when you want to print black only, but the printer insist that you need to replace yellow which you don't have in stock.

After 14 months the printer declared that cartridges were missing although they were physically present. Even after replacing all cartridges with brand new ones (that is ~$120), the printer still claims that black is missing. So I ended with non-working printer with expired warranty after 400 days of ownership, because it claims ink cartridges are missing when they are not.

The front feed mechanism works well for regular paper and has good allignment. Using heavier paper in the trays results in a very precise dent being made at a very precise spot on the page. Using thicker paper in the tray also results in banding in the printout. The single sheet rear feed causes less banding, no dents and can handle thicker paper but quite consistenly pulls the paper in croocked.

The ink is very expensive, the printer seems to waste quite a lot of it, judging by the mounds of dried up ink under the print heads.

HP has made it near impossible to use 3rd party ink supplies with this printer, with the chips built into the cartridges, so *only* expensive ink as an option. Legally they should allow one to use other source supplies.

In short an ill-behaved machine that works great when it feels like it, and in our case it did it only for about a year with some interrupions.

Next printer will be the Epson 2200 or 4000 for large color and some Laser. No more HP. ... Read more
