4-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for!
I've been waiting for a solution like this to allow me to access my music libraries stored on my computer from my home stereo in a different part of the house. But I didn't want to setup another network, I wanted something that worked directly over an existing 802.11b network. I also thought a TV interface was a good idea for navigating a large library.

I considered some other products, but was always turned off by the lack of detailed product information at the manufacturer web sites, or bizarre configuration requirements. I downloaded the user guide from the Linksys web site before making my decision to purchase this, and could see that this was just what I wanted.

I was able to point it to my music collection, and it was instantly available for selection via the TV interface. Manually tracking down the directory where MusicMatch stores its playlist files was a minor challenge, but it works great with those playlists as well. And the sound quality is very good. It also does a great job displaying pictures from my digital camera.

I'm only giving it 4 stars instead of 5, mainly because the installation was a challenge. The installation software couldn't find the device on the wireless network, so I had to hook it up with an ethernet cable to initially configure the device. I used the setup utility to configure the settings that I wanted for the device, and it kept reporting an error that it could not save the settings. I eventually realized that despite the error, the settings were being saved, and continued. Once I realized that the configuration settings were being saved, it came up on the wireless network just fine (needed to change default of "adhoc" mode to "infrastructure" mode). But then the software that runs on the PC would not install. No errors were reported, just a link on the desktop pointing to a missing file that was nowhere to be found on my hard drive. After several attempts, I was about to call tech support when I decided to reboot first, after which the install then worked properly.

It would be nice if the install had an option to scan your hard drives for music and picture files, and then gave you the option to select the directories to include from the ones that were found, rather than requiring manual selections. But the manual selection approach was probably better for me personally.

Now that it is installed, I'm quite happy with it. I've only been using it for about 6 hours, but the user interface is good. The "shuffle" mode for a playlist doesn't seem to work quite like I expect (the first song in the playlist is always first even in "shuffle" mode, and there doesn't seem to be a way to reshuffle the playlist once it is loaded), but other than that it is working quite well. I think I'm going to be very happy with it. I'm optimistic that now that the installation challenges are done that it will work its way up to 5 stars from my current 4 rating.

3-0 out of 5 stars Works as Advertised
I had this product up and running in about 15 minutes. I am using the device wirelessly with WEP encryption. I did have to disable my firewall during the setup process. It was annoying to have to approve every action the software was taking during setup. Ran into a problem using it, once I went from using the Ethernet port connection to wireless, because I re-enabled my firewall. Over came this by adding a static IP address to the device and then allowing that address access through the firewall. The device does everything advertised. I even have it pulling music from 3 different PC's on my network. Upgrades I would recommend to Linksys include:
    1. Optical output
    2. Enhanced scrolling through folders
    3. Display of album art
    4. Ability to play video
    5. Component video output
    6. Upgrade to 802.11g

2-0 out of 5 stars i really like linksys, but:
i did not expect i would be writting this review for this product. my initial experience was very good and the product performed as advertised. Unfortunately some where along the line the software suffered the same fate as other customers. that is the client software crashes and refuses to run under xp pro. the online tech support is useless and the fact pages clearly are not addressing this problem. it makes the product useless and a nice paper weight. for background i have tried re-installing the software and .net many times to see if i could fix the problem (by the way the uninstaller also crashes so this is a manual process) with no success. i really like linksys products as they are doing some neat stuff but it is clear they are having some real technical support issues. make sure you can get a refund if you buy this product!

3-0 out of 5 stars When it works, it's great; the software needs improving
When it works, it's great. I won't duplicate all the positives and features mentioned by other reviewers.

As many other reviewers have said, the TV interface is basic, the remote is more complicated than it needs to be, the unit doesn't support Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall, and the email support, in my experience, is completely incompetent.

I also have problems with the software that runs on the PC. I have about 18,000 MP3s + JPEGs. When my machine reboots, the WMA11B's XWPCHostService.exe consumes 99% of my CPU for the first 10 minutes after boot. It also consumes over 100MB of memory.

Finally, XWPCHostService.exe watches for new files. When a new file appears, such as a new JPEG, it opens it to do some kind of cataloging. This unfortunately interferes with a photo downloading program I have that downloads an image and then rotates it if necessary.

2-0 out of 5 stars Incomaptability with firewalls is a serious drawback
The idea behind the WMA is great. But it has a serious problem. You cannot use it if you use the Windows XP firewall.

I just contacted the Linksys technical support chat and they confirmed that you can't do it. The box in which the adapter comes provides no warning, and the installation instructions mention the firewall problem way back on page 35 in Appendix A.

One would be justified in wondering whether the product is technically smart and whether the packaging and instructions might not be more transparent. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars great camera, software needs some work
Short and sweet... This camera is great, hardware-wise. The image looks good, and the automatic light adjustment works well. Capturing video at 320x240 is smooth.

Installation is true plug and play. This camera is Microsoft WHQL logo'd and drivers are included with Windows ME and XP. No installation of the included software is necessary. If you have Windows 2000 you will need to download drivers from the Intel web site. This is a bad thing for people who actually want to use the included software, as it will not install or work in Window 2000, the downloadable drivers are bare bones. This is not so bad, as the included software is not too hot anyway, and netmeeting and windows movie maker or media encoder work great. Windows media encoder is a free download from Microsoft.

The camera is well priced and beats all the other cameras out there for OS support and quality. Yes, even the Intel Pocket Camera. Pick up this camera for a low price and there is also the rebate which makes it a steal. If you are even slightly considering getting a webcam, go for this one. You will put it to good use if you plan on running Windows XP in the near future, as the built in Windows Messenger software makes it really easy to have video chats with friends or family.

5-0 out of 5 stars After A Long Search, Perfect Cam
Well, I searched around a bit, and also took a look at friends cams in their homes and other friends output of their cams online.

The problem with most webcams is that they really are horrible, but since they are very inexpensive, many people get tricked into buyin the cheapest one, I mean, a cam is a cam right? Wrong.

Most cams offer poor lighting features, poor color, lousy picture, and their software is lame at best.

This cam worked immediately out of the box, has great software and within minutes, you can send a link to a friend and they can see you like that!

The software included, gives you the option to turn your PC into a video server, which in these days of broadband, is a great option.

You can also set up a motion detector feature, so that when you are away, if anything moves within the camera range it can do several things with the image. One, it can save the image(s) to disk, or email the picture to a selected email account, or upload it to a web page.

I found all of these options worked well, except the upload part. There was limited documentation on how this worked, but I tried it with a FrontPage website, no luck. Tried it via FTP, no luck. I did manage to get it to upload to an AOL web account (members AOL space) which is fine for my needs. I may have not set it up correctly for the other features, but it was fairly basic: FTP username, pass and location, so I am not sure how I could screw that up.

The camera adapts well to low light, and with a little tweaking, you could probably get a clear picture under candle light :)

I must say, I was very impressed with this product, and it just goes to show, that if you do enough research on your purchase, you have a great chance of being satisfied with it. The reviews for this cam, helped greatly in my final decision to purchase the cam.

    A++

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for what it is designed for
the quality of this webcam is great with one of the best video outputs. I have tried it with yahoo and MSN messenger, and everyone says my video quality is great!
The include software is not very good, but you don't really need it. I use Photoshop to get still image, though the still image quality is not very good.

4-0 out of 5 stars Going on 3 years now...
I got this web cam as a gift almost 3 years ago. I still use it! It's dropped in price by quite a bit since then. Briefly, here are the main features worth mentioning. ^_^

You can record videos, and crop out parts from the beggining/end. For me the frames per second rate was always quite slow. Making videos of my daughter for her father was out of the question. The cam would freeze on one frame or blur too bad to see anything. Move in slow motion when making a video.

There is a autosnap feature. Set the refresh time, add a caption (pick the font, color, size, put it on the top or bottom, and select an optional time format) if you want, then pose while the camera takes a autoshot. Be warned, it saves over the previous picture so turn off the autosnap and resave the first one under a different name if you want to keep it.

Pictures can be saved to a certain file on your hard drive, upload via FTP, onto a disk, or to e-mail.

It has sticky tape at the bottom of the stand (I haven't used it, don't plan to) and is very easy to change the camera's angles. There's also a purple button on top of the cam, push it to take a picture (when the snapshot program is open) rather than having to use your mouse.

The settings are easy to reach and easier to change. If you don't know about the settings than change them one at a time and don't save if you don't like the effect. The light in the room will also effect how the image turns out. Keep that in mind.

It comes with pointless games that waste space (play them instead of staring off into space if you get bored). Your cam must be on to play them.

A family member dropped my webcam several times and even tried to open the case up. It still works perfectly for the most part. Every now and then when it would heat up it would get horizontal lines scrolling up across the cam image, or a weird tint (like green or purple). That was a major annoyance. It hasn't done that in a long time thankfully.

I really like this webcam. As long as videos aren't important to you, give it a try!

5-0 out of 5 stars Killer!!
I'm sure there are better cameras out there, but for the price, this is top of the line. The video input is extremely handy, plug the audio into your sound cards audio input and BOOM, you can transfer any of your videos to your computer. Intel is an A1 company and they have yet to disappoint. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A hidden Gem!
This really is an excellent system. Let me say it again this is a great system when you get it home and see the sum of all its parts. This system has a fast processor, lots of memory,a huge hard drive and tons of goodies that you just wont find on alot of other brand name computers. I really wanted a dell like alot of you. I heard only great things about dell computers. My computer recently died(moment of silence)and I needed a replacement in a hurry for our home business. The dell just took to much time to get, and now that I compare the two I find that I have alot more computer for a much cheaper price. I went to Best Buy and bought the PCV-RS530G and have been on cloud nine ever since. Now I know that I sound like a Sony employee, which I am not,but this system really grows on you as you spend more time with it. The first reviewer got a bad apple, and they are upset but this happen to someone no matter what brand you buy, there will be that one person you hear about that had a terrible time. I felt compelled to write this review because I really feel this is one of the best computers that you can buy for around $1300.00 Its has tons of software for editing photos, making DVD movies, recording tv programs (kinda like a tivo only cheaper)and many other useful programs which I still am exploring. Sony may not be the first brand that you consider when looking for a new PC, but you know what, they always make sound products that last a long time. I am writing this review on my Sony laptop which I have had for 6 years now and you know what? It still works like the day I first bought it. Now the one feature that really make this computer stand out from all the others is the Giga Pocket software. I really like being able to record my favorite TV programs and watching them whenever I am able. I can even archive them to a DVD should I wish. There also is an application included so that you can click on a menu and the software will automatically record the program of your choice from start to finish, with just one click. The video card is a ATI Radeon 9200 which is a good card for most of us, however you die hard gamers will probably want to upgrade to a top of the line card. This system has a DVD+/- Rewritable Drive and a DVD drive for watching your favorite movies and loading software. I could go on and on but please just trust me and go to your favorite computer store (best buy) and play with the system for a few minutes. I am sure that you will be as impressed as I was with my hidden gem. I say this because this system is so new that reviews are unfortunately hard to come by and this system deserves an honest review. Buying a PC off the shelf is never ideal, but I was stuck, so I bought the best they had, a Sony PCV-RS530G. I like Sony; I keep saying that, not sure why anymore. It has a great processor, adequate RAM, and a so-so video card. The power supply is underpowered and not a standard size. The big problem is the hard drive, it's so slow! It's a Seagate, which makes a very quiet drive, quiet because it barely moves, and Sony makes it all worse with a really odd partition scheme. The drive also features an obsolete 2mb cache and no acoustic management tools; it can't be speeded up. The high end processor and the RAM spend all their time playing solitaire waiting for the hard drive to produce data, it's terrible. No big deal, I bought a new fast hard drive. Before cloning I went to use the back-up utility, and it wouldn't burn the discs: that's right $1,500.00 and you don't get a back-up disc, you have to purchase one, and the onboard Vaio back-up software is useless. I went ahead with the clone, but something went wrong and now I have a brand new $1,500 rectangle; joy. To get a recovery disc I had to go to Sony's parts department, which is a very slow moving place (U.S. based; somehow Sony Japan gets things to me in Maryland, USA within 3 days, Sony U.S. takes weeks), and I ordered what may, or may not be the right one for my dead machine, it only said RS500 series on the site and even that took a lot of searching to find. I'm having it overnighted, it won't speed things up much though. So here I sit, with a ton of work to do and no new PC. The discs have not shipped and nobody has answered my inquiry as to whether I had ordered the right recovery kit. I have had similar experiences with other Sony products recently - it took a long time, but they have finally earned my contempt.
UPDATE 4/29/04: I still hate it. The display drivers keep going south on me. Multiple system wipes, updates, new monitor, new video card, nothing helps. I use my computer to run a business and don't have time for this mess. I have owned PC's made by Gatewy, eMachines, HP, and Acer; this one is the worst. I am giving up and will be buying a new PC from a different company this week. What a complete waste of time and money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars It is okay. You just have to find more things to do with it
I purchased the Intel Pro Pack camera with the Create and Share Software. It is okay. I have a Celeron Chip inside so I don't get the fastest video but it is very decent. For beginners, I would highly recommend it. Keep in mind, your lighting needs to be set right. I had some problems with pictures in relation to the amount of light.

With a little tweeking and stuff, you can make great use of this camera.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great little webcam for netmeeting
I have this webcam for over two years now and it worths every penny. I use it for video chatting and playing games.

5-0 out of 5 stars Modified for astrocam
After a week of trials and errors, I succeeded modify this affordable webcam to be my astrocamera. It works great! More info on "intel cs330 astrocam" can be found on google.

2-0 out of 5 stars No good if you have Windows 2000
This works fine with Windows ME(with a patch)and Win98 but I mostly use Win2K. Intel offers a beta driver for Win2K but it doesn't work very well. I would recommend buying a different camera if you use Windows 2000. I will have to buy another camera now that I use mostly Windows 2000.

1-0 out of 5 stars Off to a bad start...
I hear of Intel quite a bit nowadays. I expected their products to perform reasonably well... This flimsy hunk of plastic refused to comply with everything I tried to have it do. It would take one snapshot, then freeze. Then, once I got the program to become unstuck, my computer would crash, rendering everything on my computer dead. Then, after a few rounds of this, I decide to remove the software. Bad idea. It took over a half-hour of battle with this monstrosity to pry its deathgrip off my system. The closest I could get to determining the cause of this debacle is that, on the back of the box, it says that it's optimized for Pentiums. I have an AMD Athlon. ? Any help would've worked, but the forum for video and conferencing on intel.com was deactivated in April. Probably because people got fed up w/ a $140.00 P.O.S. and quit dealing with it. Good doorstop maybe, good camera, I don't think so. :( ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Performing USB Web-Cam Ever Made
Intel Home PC Camera / Model #CS331 / Original Retail was $79.99
I have two of these. Intel definitely got it right when they designed this cam, and it's a shame they've discontinued it. This is by far the best USB driven camera I have ever seen. The CCD based (instead of the standard CMOS) optics on this camera are phenomenal, and the video rivals that of my Sony camcorder! Sensitivity & color balance are very good. This cam performs well above average in low light conditions. The video is clear, with no distortion, and does not granulize or pixelate. If you're looking for a top-end USB web cam, try to track one of these down. It will be well worth the effort.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Webcam I've ever had
This is the best webcam I've ever had, it has excellent image quality due to its very best optics and CCD sensor. It performed beautifully under all light conditions, and extremely well in low light condition. After I used this webcam, I just dumped my two Logitech webcams ( which have very poor image quality and are junks compared to this Intel webcam)

5-0 out of 5 stars A nice camera that works with Windows 2000/XP
Inevitably, all computer purchases are dictated by compatibility. This camera /does/ work with Windows 2000. A word from the wise: Do not use the software disc that comes with the camera unless you actually want to do the things that are advertised on the box.

Instead, go directly to the Intel website and download the camera drivers alone. After unpacking the driver file, run the hardware setup as administrator. Now, you can use whatever webcam/pc cam software you want.

Following the above, I had this camera working inside 5 minutes. The Intel drivers increase the camera resolution and refresh rate over those of the default Windows drivers.

The default color balance is a tiny bit off and the USB cord is a bit short. But, overall, it's a fine camera and well worth the money spent over cheaper cameras.

5-0 out of 5 stars Half price at Big Lots
The discontinued model of Intels hot pc video camera is flying off the shelves at discount retailers. This would make a great Christmas gift now that you can afford 2 for the price of 1. Get one for yourself and give one to someone you want to see online. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 8 devices with no wires!
That's about it! No more wires all over the place, the wireless joysticks are great for playing away from the chairs! the keyboard never skips a bit! and the mouse is super accurate, best investment in wireless I ever made! Did I mention NO WIRES?!?! The mouse use to need a battery change every 5 or 6 months, then I changed to alkalines... they are still kickin'!

5-0 out of 5 stars Does its job well
The base station does its job. It doesn't run on batteries as the mouse and gamepad does, but on an ac adapter like most electronics, so no need to worry about the battery dieing on you. The range on this is far, so I have it behind my computer where it doesn't get in the way and frees up desk space.
You only really need in front of you when setting up the wireless mouse, gamepad and/or keyboard for the first time.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great product, but uses up batteries
This was my first wireless mouse. To start off, physically, I didn't really like how the base station was so oddly shaped, hard to fit in somewhere. The mouse seemed a little big. Installation was super quick and easy. I had my mouse running in less than 10 minutes. No problems functioning except when it is low on battery life which seems quite often. It is a quality product, but changing the batteries annoy me. I have to replace my batteries every 3 months or so it seems. Overall, perfermance is excellent, just didn't like how it used up batteries so fast.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Item
Have worked with other wireless mice , but this one is just excellent. Also since the base station can support 8 devices this make s life a lot simpler (no more mess) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Intel Anypoint Adapter
I have four computers networked and working very well with this adapter -- for more than a year. There are some bugs. You need to use Intel Connectivity Suite 2.20 for the best stability and ease of use on the Windows 98 platform. You need to manually give the computers IP addresses for the local network (LAN) -- 192.168.01, etc. for the best stability. If you have one computer on XP, then you must use version 2.30.02 (downloadable from Intel) on all of the computers. If XP and 2.30.02 are in the equation, then I would suggest you use Microsoft ICS instead of Intel ISS for Internet Sharing -- again, it is just more stable and you then do not need to manually give the local comptuters IP addresses. Unfortunately, this product has been discontinued. However, Intel support -- both website and phone -- is still great for this product. ptb

3-0 out of 5 stars Good with DSL -- if you do it right
I run the Anypoint phone line system with a DSL and it works very well. However, when I installed it, I put both the DSL and the Anypoint network on the same phone line -- this, on the advice of my DSL provider, who said the two would get along fine in the same piece of wire. Don't know why, but it simply didn't work -- the computers couldn't find one another on the line. I then switched the Anypoint network to our second phone line, and it works like a charm -- no degradation of speed most of the time, and just a little bit of hesitation when all three computers are actively downloading data. If you are going DSL, however, I recommend two phone lines.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good, once you get it set up
When I first installed the anypoint network it worked fine except for Intel's Internet Connection Sharing. The performace degraded so bad that I was running less than a 14.4K modem speed on my ICS clients. I re-installed it with everything except the Internet Connection Sharing. Then I ran Microsoft's Home Network Wizard. It has worked up to par ever since.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a very good product
I should begin this with a disclaimer: I work for Intel and love the company. Having said that what I am about to say pains me. Anypoint is not a very good product and I do not recommend buying it. (Granted from discussions with others all of the HomePNA [phone line] products on the market seem pretty lousy.)

    My story:

I ordered Anypoint to network two brand new high end computers (a Win98SE PC and Win2000 laptop) together so I could share the DSL connection. The PCs sit on opposite ends of the house and I didn't feel like crawling around with cables or spending a lot of money on a wireless network. I dutifully downloaded all the latest software updates. I am familiar with networking so I carefully checked all of my settings.

Fact: My DSL connection slowed to a crawl or stop at times. I called the Intel tech support several times and every one of time they said, "we hear lots of complaints, it just doesn't work well with DSL.."

Fact: My computer crashed with alarming frequency (a problem recently fixed by a driver update that caused my computer to spend about 7 minutes booting up).

Fact: Anypoint did not work well with my Norton Firewall and it took a lot of tweaking of advanced settings before I could get it to (barely) work.

Fact: Anypoint doesn't work well with Win2K and despite claiming to support it the drivers just aren't healthy. I was told by a tech support person that "it is really best to have only Win98SE computers on an Anypoint network."

To top it all off, I never got the full... rebate I earned for buying two Anypoint products. First of all I never got my rebate. I called to see what was wrong and they told me I had not included the UPCs. I told them I knew they had the UPCs because I taped the receipts, UPCs, and rebate forms to once piece of paper. I spoke to a 'supervisor' and told her that I worked for Intel and would walk across the campus and into the cubicle of the senior manger in charge of the home networking products if they continued to play games. They quickly changed their tune and promised my rebate was on the way. Finally a check arrived for half the amount!.. I complained to Intel through the official website and the company processing the rebates. It turned out that no one was getting their full rebate! The rebate company blamed Intel saying that is what they were told to do. I was promised that this would be fixed and that everyone would get their full [refund]. Well I never got mine and I doubt anyone ever got theirs. I should have raised a fuss, but frankly I was tired of the whole deal. Most of the fault lies with the company processing the rebates but I hold Intel's Home Networking group responsible for hiring such a lousy outfit.

I think this product will work well if you have a 56K modem because the lag caused by the Anypoint probably isn't noticeable. However there isn't enough bandwidth on a 56K modem worth sharing, so I don't suggest you try that with any product on the market today. It might work better for DSL users without a firewall, but a DSL line without a firewall is a hackers dream. If you don't want to share an internet connection then Anypoint might be worth a shot. So if you have DSL, or Win2K, stay away!!!

How did I solve my problem?
I disconnected and uninstalled the whole mess. Instantly my Internet was faster and my computer booted in the usual 30 seconds. I went out and bought a Compaq Ipaq CP-2W and Compaq wireless networking PCcard. It was very simple to setup and the Internet just screams. It cost about three times as much and was worth every penny. You can save some money and buy your wireless products from Linksys but the drivers and firmware aren't as robust (my partially informed opinion) and it isn't as user friendly (100% sure on this point).

By the way I still believe that Intel designs great products; this just isn't one of them. ... Read more
