Amazon.com Product Description

Compact and battery efficient yet more powerful and versatile than many larger, bulkier portable computers, the Gateway M505X Notebook is a smart choice for those who put equal emphasis on performance and portability.

Not surprisingly, the unit features Intel's new Centrino technology. Built upon a triad of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full GB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- Centrino-equipped notebooks deliver more power and more perks than their comparatively diminutive size and rated processor speed would otherwise indicate. In the case of the Gateway M505X, that processor is a 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium M, which works hand-in-hand with the system's 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory and impressively punchy ATI Radeon 9600 graphics controller (64 MB dedicated video memory) to efficiently handle all but the most complex 2-D and 3-D business and leisure notebook applications.

Measuring just 14 by 10 by 1.4 inches and weighing a mere 6.7 pounds with optical drive and battery installed, the Gateway M505X is nevertheless crammed with impressive mobile features. Though the unit's 40 GB hard disk is only of average size, its optical drive permits CD playing and burning and DVD playing. Its display offers a surprisingly generous 15.4 widescreen inches of viewing area at crystal clear 1280 by 800 resolutions, and its on-board stereo speaker system features a miniature subwoofer for added audio depth. Moreover, its communication options include not only a standard 56K dial-up modem and a 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, but also an integrated 802.11b wireless connection for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in.

Other important amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals such as scanners or digital cameras, two IEEE 1394 FireWire ports (typically used for digital camcorder downloads), a VGA port for external monitors, a parallel "printer" port, and an S-Video TV-out.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works Suite 7.0 and a 90-day trial with Norton AntiVirus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is one SUPER computer!!
Greetings - I ordered this laptop from Amazon in May - and it was forwarded to me all the way to FOB Dagger, Iraq (Amazon will not send lots of technology products overseas so I had to have it forwarded). First of all, my full-time job is computer support so I have quite a bit of laptop/notebook experience. This M505x is a super, super machine. Build quality is great - no 'flexy' case, cheap plastic (think "D*ll") or crooked lines here and there - its top-notch in this respect. It is made in the Phillipines vice mainland China by the way. The display is bright, responsive and not grainy (and the case lid appears to be aluminum). No dead pixels on mine by the way, quite a feat considering how far it traveled!! One of the greatest features of this laptop is the ATI Radeon 9600 (64mb DDR) graphics. It absolutely rocks with the games I've played. Raven Shield looks great - and the Far Cry demo is awsome. Oh, also by the way, in view of all of this praise, you might think this is either a vaporware review - or that I'm somehow connected to Gateway. I really ordered and possess the system and I'm not in any way connected with Gateway. One little downside is that it came with a 4200-rpm hdd - but I had pre-ordered a spare Hitachi 40-gb 5400-rpm drive (not from Gateway or Amazon). Here's another M505x advantage - Gateway didn't take the cheap way out with a garbage-software-infested restore CD - the "restore" CD appears to be a relabeled XP Home CD! No problems with the restore to the new hdd - and the software/apps CD gives you the option to pick and choose what to install. All of the buttons/SD card slot/graphics worked perfectly after the restore. I cannot say enough good things about the M505x - I am thrilled with mine!! One last comment - I am sending this review from an Army morale computer in an internet cafe. I had never cared much for Gateways until I arrived here at FOB Dagger. The 20 Gateways in this Cafe take an enormous beating from GI's, heat, dust, viruses - you name it. Most of them have a few bad pixels now - but they are running very well considering the use and abuse they get. The only thing they all need is 256mb of ram instead of the measly 128mb that they each have. Ok - last but not least - there has to be some negatives: Gateway uses cheap cardboard for shock protection in their boxes - although my system was not damaged. And, to be honest, some users have reported dark areas in their displays (not mine, though) - as reported on notebookforums.com. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Though not the most potent portable computer on the market, Acer's TravelMate C110 Tablet PC is nevertheless one of the most convenient. Incredibly small and lightweight for maximum ease of transport, the combination notebook and tablet TravelMate C110 also offers total input flexibility. Users who prefer traditional data entry may take advantage of the integrated 84-key keyboard with scroll feature and programmable touchpad. Those who prefer "handwriting" via digital ink can utilize the enclosed stylus to freehand sketch their ideas on the system's swiveling flip-open 10.4-inch LCD screen. And for people who'd rather speak than write, the TravelMate C110 also supports voice recognition via its built-in microphone.

But there's far more to like than input versatility in this, one of Acer's most affordable tablets. For starters, at just 10.1 by 8.5 by 1.0 inches and 3.2 pounds (without external drives), the unit is small enough to be carried inside some briefcases. It also features Intel's Centrino technology for improved battery life, remote wireless communication and substantially more efficient CPU usage than non-Centrino systems.

Driving the TravelMate C110 is an Ultra-Low-Voltage 1 GHz Intel Pentium M processor with a stunning 1024 KB Level 2 cache. Acer has matched this midlevel Centrino-based CPU with a minimal alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM memory (upgradeable to 2 full GB) and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 3-D video controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) graphics memory. Make no mistake -- the unit is not ready for heavy-duty business multitasking or high-end 3-D animation or games. It is, however, perfect for day-to-day general computing, particularly out-of-the-office field applications where its efficiency, size and wireless design really comes in handy.

The system features today's most desirable connectivity options, including two ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, a single FireWire port for attaching external devices such as digital video cameras, an RJ-45 LAN port for fast network access and Internet interaction, a low-speed 56K modem, and of course an internal 802.11b wireless LAN with internal antenna. Data handling components include an average-sized 40 GB hard disk and a detachable CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can archive data, install applications, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest DVD movies. The unit is also Bluetooth upgradeable.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system, Microsoft's Microsoft Reader e-book utility, Acer's Notebook Manager, and several utilities. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3.0 hours in ideal conditions. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

As the base model of Acer's new Aspire 2000 series of portable PCs, the Aspire AS2001LCi shares many of the high-end features of its slightly upscale siblings but at a more affordable price. If you need solid portability, wireless communications and satisfactory 3-D performance but can make do with a marginally slower processor and no DVD burning, the Aspire AS2001LCi may be the Aspire for you.

The key to the Aspire series is Intel's revolutionary new Centrino system, which combines an efficient Intel Pentium M processor with a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. In the case of the Aspire AS2001LCi, that processor is a Pentium M running at 1.4 GHz. Acer has included a generous 512 MB alloent of RAM memory and an ATI Mobility Radeon graphics controller with 64 MB dedicated video memory. In this stock configuration, the unit makes quick work of typical home, home office and light-duty business tasks and even midlevel 3-D games and animation packages.

Furthermore, it's great for traveling. Measuring 14.2 by 10.7 by 1.3 inches and tipping the scales at 6.6 pounds, the Acer Aspire AS2001LCi is marginally bigger and heavier than today's new ultralights, yet it's half the weight of some top-of-the-line desktop replacements and substantially less expensive than both.

At 40 GB, the system's hard disk is satisfactory for storing a flock of applications and files but may not be spacious enough for those who also want to maintain a large multimedia library. However, Acer has added a DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn audio files to CD, archive data and watch DVD movies on the system's DVD-friendly 15.4-inch WXGA widescreen display.

The Aspire AS2001LCi is ready for the future. Communication options include a high-speed LAN port for fast network access, a low-speed RJ-11 dial-up modem and, last but certainly not least, an Intel PRO/Wireless Network Connection at 802.11b. Connectivity includes three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, one FireWire IEEE 1394 port for fast corded data transfer from devices such as digital camcorders, an FIR (fast infrared) port for cordless data transfer from gadgets such as PDAs, and a versatile 4-in-1 card reader slot for quickly accessing media card information. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Being the priciest and most capable model in Averatec's upscale 5110 roster of mobile computers, the Averatec 5110P Notebook PC delivers all the perks of the other two 5110 models plus upscale amenities such as DVD burning and Microsoft's beefy Windows XP Professional Edition operating system. Lightweight and versatile, the Averatec 5110P is a smart alternative or those who value portability, strong general performance and modern accoutrements over devastating speed.

Like all 5110 series machines, the Averatec 5110P measures just 12.9 by 10.75 by 1 inches and tips the scales at a mere 6.3 pounds with standard battery attached. It is thusly an excellent choice for those who must carry their notebook with them on their daily journeys.

The unit brandishes Intel's new Centrino technology. Centrino refers to a triumvirate of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium-M CPU (in this case a midlevel 1.3 GHz model), an Intel 855 chipset, and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection -- all of which work together to make your notebook fast, lightweight, battery-efficient and wireless-capable. Averatec has added a generous alloent of 512 MB DDR SDRAM main memory to help with your multitasking and an Intel 855GM graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory. Though dedicated video memory would be preferred for applications such as 3-D animation and 3-D games, 64 MB shared memory is adequate for most standard 3-D apps.

The Averatec 5110P features a midsize 40 GB hard disk on which to store your important data and a DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data, play DVD movies and transfer video to long-lasting DVD media. You'll monitor your activities on a large 15-inch XGA TFT display capable of respectable 1024 by 768 resolution, and listen to your tunes via built-in stereo speakers.

For such a small and affordable notebook, the Averatec 5110P is well connected. Communication options include integrated 10/100 Mbit LAN for fast networking and Internet access, a 56K modem for slower dial-up environments and 802.11b wireless for those times when you can't plug in. Other important amenities include three fast USB 2.0 ports for data streaming with external devices such as scanners and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for high-speed downloads from digital camcorders, a Type II PC Card CardBus slot, and an 88-key full-sized keyboard with 12 one-touch function keys.

Aside from Windows XP Professional Edition, the mediocre software bundle includes Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package and the PowerDVD XP DVD player. Time between charges is estimated at an admirable five-plus hours with the enclosed 8-cell Smart Li-ion battery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A REAL WINNER!
I am actually shopping for one more of these beauties to give to the person I originally bought it for. I grab for this one before I reach for my Sony Vaio (believe it, or not) since I find it totally user friendly and I love that I can, with the built in software and the BUILT IN DVD RECORDER and CD-Rom burner, make disks for everything I need. The Sony only has a CD-Rom burner, so I have to have a separate DVD Recorder to transfer videos. Anyway, I bought the Sony first, and the Averatec for one of my employees, and here I am, clinging to the Averatec! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Gateway's Amazing notebook
I've had this notebook for 3 months now and it was amazing right from when I received it. Amazing features of this notebook includes Nice wide screen display and a pair of good internal speakers with subwoofer ideal for listening to music and watching movies. Recent games such as Final fantasy XI, Max Payne 2 and NFS underground runs very smoothly and the speedy pentium M processor handles most demanding applications well. The slot loading DVD drive is cool too, and most of all it has a AV control panel and it is light enough to be carried around. A quality product from Gateway.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing
As a web and graphic designer, I constantly put my computers to the test. This one keeps up. I can have several high-intensity programs running at the same time without bogging down all my system resources. Furthermore, the battery life is amazing (mine is over 4 hours), it is completely silent, doesn't get hot, light for its size, and stylish to boot. I am in love.

The only thing that marred my experience with this computer is receiving one with a dead pixel in the center of my display. Big bummer. Gateway won't fix it. Otherwise, this is one amazing laptop.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing notebook
This laptop has everything one could need:
-Fast processor, good amount of memory, GREAT graphic card, DVD writer, and a wide-screen ideal for games, DVD viewing and any other multimedia applications. For music enthusiasts, a built-in music player on the left of the keyboard can be used to play audio cds or mp3s without even turning the laptop on. Also, the speakers are of very good quality and the laptop even has a built-in subwoofer.

I tried a lot of notebooks before buying the M505XL and I can safely say that this is one of the best. At this price, you can't get a better deal.

For gamers, as I mentioned the graphic card is amazing. You'll be able to play the latest games with the settings maxed out at an amazing frame rate. ONLY games such as Far Cry which actually compete with the graphic engine of Half Life 2 might show some slowdown, but removing advanced settings such as Anti-Aliasing will boost the frame rate while keeping excellent visual quality. Games that work perfectly with all the settings turned on: Need for speed underground, Halo, Call of duty, Final Fantasy XI, Unreal Tournament 2003...

Finally the notebooks's pretty light (6.7 pounds) and you can easily take it with you wherever you go.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Notebook, Great Price.
After a long search for a replacement laptop my search ended with the m505. I needed a notebook with solid construction, long battery life (Centrino), portability (under seven pounds and sturdy), capable of some gaming and graphics. My seach was narrowed between the Dell 8600 and this Gateway m505XL.

The m505 is all that is advertised.

Pros:
+ Solid Construction: Strong case with well built feel. Not aftraid to take anywhere (within reason)
+ User Interface: Both keyboard and trackpad have a nice feel and easy to use. The mouse buttons are a little hard to press initially but after some use move easier. The keyboard has a cool look but more improtantly has a nice sound and solid feel. Standard layout. It has an AC control panel that I will never use but is nice. The quick launch buttons are handy and well located.
+ Screen: This 15.4" WXGA screen is very crisp and bright. Perfect for computing and gaming. Movies look very nice but not as nice as they would on a WUXGA offered by some other systems (IMO the only advantage of a super high resolution screen).
+ Battery Life and Heat: Very cool and very long battery life. Can be considered a true laptop by not buring your lap (just gets a little warm during gaming)and providing over four and a half hours of normal operation.
+ Gaming: With the Radeon 9600 and 64MB video card, coupled with the 1.5 Centrino, this plays even the newest Direct X 9b games with great performance and look. Unexpected ability from a mobile notebook. Have played Tron 2.0, Call of Duty, Deus Ex - Invisible War and all look great.
+ Slot loading DVD-R. Nice front loading design with solid perfomance from this drive.
+ Many ports to choose from. 2x USB 2.0, 2x Firewire, S-Video, etc.

Cons:
- Ability to customize the order (upgrade drive or processor)
- Headphone jack is in the back. Strange.

Overall great notebook with a very good price. Gatway support has been overall very good and they have been responsive to my concerns or needs. The m505 is also sold by Gigabyte under the name of the n601. I am very happy with my purchase and I have had the notebook for over two week with a lot of exposue. Keeping me happy. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Make sure you get what you pay for
I have owned this lappy for about a month now. One word -- BEYOND EXPECTATION. Keep in mind that my old desktop is only a IntelCelron 400mhz and old lappy is only a iBook G3 450mhz.

I have been shopping around for a good looking lappy that can actually perform with excellent battery life. This is THE ONE. After looking at G4 Powerbook for a while, I decided to safe ~$700 to upgrade this M505XL, old desktop, old lappy and loaded of accessories for my new toy. Here is MHO review.

What's hot!!

1. Solid built quality.
2. Looks hot (looks more expensive than it actually is worth. It is the clostest thing a PC to a Power G4.
3. Over 4.5 hrs battery life w/~3.5 hrs for DVD. If you have a high capacity battery this could go up by about 0.5-1hr. I got mixed up with a regular 8 cells ion battery.
4. Great sound system for a lappy. Beat anything out there with this price range. Sub really adds good dept.
5. Centrino 1.5Ghz is plenty fast for my average graphic editing, office processing programs, and directx 9.0b gaming.
6. Full function dedicated AV control panel. Although it is not that big of a deal, but its functionality is very handy when watching DVD and listening audio.
7. Full size keybord w/ full functionality. And pretty impressive touchpad.
8. Good graphic and 15.4" (if you are into widescreen). Widescreen does not make anything look fat by stretching it when you bolw window into a full screen. Everything get adjusted accordingly when browsing the internet, etc.
9. Impressively stable OS unlike I've ever experienced with any PC. I knew this well comparing my old Win98 to MacOS9 and 10 and this WinXP pro.
10. Slightly above storage capacity (60GB) and standard memory, which is still very high for a lappy (512MB).
11. Quite and impressively cool system with death silent HDD noise (Thanks for Fujitsu great HDD technology). I was in shock when I first ran my applications. My old G3 iBook cen get relatively noisy and hot on my lap.
12. Above average customer service. Used to be great customer service. See below why.

What's not!!
1. Gateway has been notorious in sending M505XL with incorrect HDD spec. Origianlly I got Fujitsu 60GB 4200rpm w/2mbcache. It is supposed to be Toshiba 60GB 5400rpm w/8mbcache. I never got the right one from Gateway after a couple of weeks debating with Gateway. Well, I bought this system from elsewhere and the quote from the supplier is only mentioned about 60GB (no speed or buffer size). Bad luck for me because Gateway holds no responsibility for this even though there is sufficient information to link a real HDD spec for M505XL model from Gateway webpage. Gateway has been discontinued this model from their own web to avoid this problem. Be ware when you are trying to buy this lappy from any other sources. Make sure that you get a written HDD spec quote.
Why I am ranting so much about this?? Well, now that I bought my own a correct HDD spec (Fujitsu 60GB 5400rpm w/8mbcache -- in love with death silent HDD technology), I am feeling like having a brand new computer. Most of my regularly used applications load pretty much instantly. I can have two programs running while watching DVD w/o a hiccup. I could not do this with the old HDD. And, even Office outlook 2003 works so slow with my old HDD. Well, it is unaccepatably slow for this price range of a system. SO LOOK BACK AGAIN AT MY REVIEW TITLE. On top of my HDD and Battery mixed up. They got my serial in the system wrong. I was trying to register, and after entering my SN it brought up a Plasma TV??? Well, Gateway promise to fix it in 2-4 weeks. It is still not after 3 weeks. I wonder whether I will be able to extend my warrenty!!
2. No upgrade option. Well, Wistron is actually manufacturing this M505 series. Basically this is a mass production model from Gateway.
3. Regardless of full size keyboard and decent feel, it is not very solid. I can feel that one of these keyboards will not last longer than 2 years. I own G3 iBook for almost 3.5 years now and not a single complaint.
4. Can only upgrade HDD up to 60GB and memory to 1024MB. High end availability are 80GB and 2048MB of Ram (This means that Gateway have Winstron put it a sub standard motherboard). Well, 100GB HDD is coming out very soon too.

I would have given 4.5, but ended up in 5 because I still like it so much after all above-mentioned troubles I could have easily returned it for a full refund after first week. Now that I upgraded the HDD to a correct spec and increased memory from 512 to 768 (will try to max out to 1024 by next month), this lappy can really perform. Noted that I tried to add more memory with the old HDD but performace was not improved enough to make me feel like a $1700-1800 lappy. By the way, I can't notice any different in battery life regardless of a new higher spec HDD. It is probably less by less than 5 min or so.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a new PC based lappy with great battery life, solid OS, good graphic, well built, medium size weight (it is pretty light to carrying around), just grab one but don't forget about the HDD and battery. (...) ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE
Am starting to think I made a mistake buying the travelmate 300. In turn, and since I purchased the machine 6 weeks ago, I have had problems with sticky keys, a cursor that dashes around the screen and, as of last week, a screen that has gone black. Reading through the Acer newsgroups, it appears that many other people have had these and other serious problems. Customer support is friendly but seems unwilling to recognize the very large number of Acer Travelmate users facing similar problems to my own. It is taking ages to get my machine's screen fixed. ... Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
Developed primarily for those who prioritize futuristic conveniences and easy portability over mind-numbing power, the Gateway 4520GZ Notebook PC is ideal for businesspeople, personal users and students who are always on the go. Similar in most respects to the pricier Gateway 4525GZ but with a smaller hard drive and no DVD recording capabilities, the Gateway 4520GZ features such perks as wireless connectivity, battery-efficient Intel Centrino technology, DVD playing and a 4-in-1 memory card reader. Diehard gamers and serious 3D artists and designers will want to look for a notebook with superior 3D graphics capabilities, but highly mobile users should find the Gateway 4520GZ delivers enough power and most of the amenities they’re likely to need.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (processor), a massive array of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today’s notebooks are equipped with state-of-the-art CPU’s on par with those found in the finest desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Gateway 4520GZ is equipped with an Intel Pentium M 705 processor running at 1.5 GHz. This is one of three components (the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless) that comprise Intel’s efficient Centrino system. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller and easier on the batteries than their non-Centrino counterparts, with a heaping helping of "Level 2" cache for faster retrieval of recently accessed information. It is important to note, however, that this particular processor is the most affordable of the newly revamped Pentium M roster, and as such offers just one MB of Level 2 cache. While this is an impressive total when compared to non-Pentium M CPUs, it is half the Level 2 cache of all other new 2004 Pentium M CPUs. Nevertheless, it should easily handle most common mobile tasks while at the same time improving battery life.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Gateway 4520GZ incorporates 512 MB of RAM of PC2700 DDR RAM, an average allotment and speed for midlevel notebooks. This total may later be expanded to an impressive 2 full GB, more than enough for even the most demanding multitasking purposes.

Video:
CPU’s are usually so busy performing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen, a duty that falls upon the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system’s graphics controller is an Intel Extreme Graphics 3D with 32 MB of "shared" video memory. This is an entry-level video controller, not equipped with "dedicated" memory and appropriating just 32 MB of the system’s main memory. As such, the system will accurately display 2D and some midlevel 3D tasks, but is not recommended for modern 3D games or other demanding applications such as 3D animation and 3D graphic design.

Display:
Some of today’s largest notebooks are equipped with massive 17-inch displays, while many super-compact "ultra-lights" sport substantially smaller 12-inch displays. The Gateway 4520GZ features a midsize TFT XGA 15-inch non-widescreen display.

Hard Disk:
A sub-compact notebook with a truly large hard drive is not commonplace, yet the Gateway 4520GZ houses a generous 60 GB of internal storage space. If you need to install and operate a broad range of applications and also keep a small library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files, the unit is up to the job.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable DVD discs and archive huge volumes of files (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Most drives allow you to do a combination of these tasks. This system features a CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can do all of the above except burn DVDs.

Audio:
Gateway has equipped the system with an integrated audio chip, built-in stereo speakers, a microphone jack and headphone/audio out.

Keyboard and Controls:
You’ll control your notebook via a standard mobile keyboard and a touchpad with vertical scroll zone.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The Gateway 4520GZ offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, a 10/100Mbps Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and an integrated 802.11g wireless connection for cord-free e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a versatile 4-in-1 Digital Medai Manager for reading memory cards from devices such as cameras, PDAs and the like.

Operating System and Software:
Gateway has fitted the unit with today’s most popular operating system, Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition. Other applications include Microsoft’s Works 7.0 productivity suite, Microsoft’s Money 2004 financial center, and an array of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today’s most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and bulky for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that generally aren’t as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and fit comfortably inside a large purse. Tipping the scales at just 5.5 lbs and measuring a mere 12.9 by 10.5 by 1.08 inches, the Gateway 4520GZ is small enough to fit inside a briefcase or large purse and not so heavy that it’s prohibitively cumbersome on long journeys.

Power:
The unit is equipped with an 6-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Being the most affordable model in Averatec's upscale, eminently portable 5110 roster of mobile computers, the Averatec 5110H Notebook PC delivers reasonable power, a lightweight profile and upscale perks such as wireless connectivity and CD burning -- all at an aggressive price point. If you can do without the DVD recording functions found in the 5110 series' two pricier models and favor convenience and modern accoutrements over devastating speed, the Averatec 5110H is a fine choice.

The Averatec 5110H brandishes Intel's new Centrino technology. Centrino refers to a triumvirate of interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium-M CPU (in this case a midlevel 1.3 GHz model), an Intel 855 chipset, and an Intel PRO/Wireless 2100 network connection -- all of which work hand-in-hand to make your notebook fast, lightweight, battery-efficient and wireless-capable. Averatec has added a generous alloent of 512 MB DDR SDRAM main memory to help with your multitasking and an Intel 855GM graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory. Though dedicated video memory is preferred for applications such as 3-D animation packages and 3-D games, 64 MB shared memory is adequate for most standard 3-D apps.

The Averatec 5110H features a midsize 40 GB hard disk on which to store your important data and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data and play DVD movies. DVD writing is not supported. You'll monitor your activities on a large 15-inch XGA TFT display capable of sharp 1024 by 768 resolution, and listen to your tunes via built-in stereo speakers.

For such a small and affordable notebook, the Averatec 5110H is very well connected.

Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition heads up the satisfactory preinstalled software bundle, which also features Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package and PowerDVD XP DVD player. Time between charges is estimated at an admirable five-plus hours with the enclosed 8-cell Smart Li-ion battery. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars dollars spent wisely
This is a very versatile notebook, either as a desktop replacement, or just for the mobile technology.

Lightweight, compact, easy to use, runs cool due to centrino processor.

Only potential downsides is the pitch of the keyboard, but I adapted to that quickly.

This is probaly the best affordable all around notebook out there! Never looked back since I bought this and the four hour battery was icing on the cake!

3-0 out of 5 stars Graphics quality is poor
Bought this notebook because of its low price, was very impressed initially with its speed, good looks and thin dimensions.

But once I started working on it, the lack of a graphics card and possibly poor screen quality made for strenuous viewing. I was forced to return the machine I bought for this reason. Averatec must consider putting in a graphics card into this machine.. that will make it a good bet.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good BUT!!!
The notebook is a great combo of power and features
BUT:
1. the speakers are awful
2. the keyboard is loud and cheap feeling
3. My Lcd display went bad after a month of use, which makes me wonder how long this notebook will last past its warranty period.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sexy laptop!
I shopped around for over a month before I finally decided to buy the Averatec 5110H notebook. The price was unbelievable: it's an outstanding value IMHO. Best of all it's a beautiful looking notebook. It's thin, it's light, it's packed with features - including 512 MB of RAM, DVD/CD-RW combo drive, and wireless. I'm thrilled with it.

I tried calling tech support with a small question, and got a very articulate fellow who was very helpful.

It for me was a major purchase, and I am confident I got an outstanding deal. The Averatec 5110H is a pleasure to own and use.

5-0 out of 5 stars Averatec 5110H
This thing rocks. Super fast and very reliable!! Truly a MUST BUY! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Up until recently, one truism has existed with all tablet-based notebooks -- they're small, with a small display screen. Most are also comparatively underpowered. Not so with Acer's distinctly upscale TravelMate C301 Tablet PC. Though it doesn't sport the same ultra-lightweight design as many of its smaller tablet peers, the TravelMate C301 combines many of the perks of a tablet with the larger display screen and processing power of a traditional notebook, and houses it all in one convenient package.

At 12.8 by 10.7 by 1.4 inches and 6.2 pounds with optical drive installed, the TravelMate C301 is indeed heavier and larger than the typical tablet but less bulky than the majority of standard notebooks. Unlike most tablets, however, the unit features a generous 14.1-inch XGA TFT LCD display (1024 x 768 maximum resolution) and a high-end Intel Centrino-based CPU.

One of the chief reasons for buying a tablet is its input flexibility, and in this regard the TravelMate C301 certainly doesn't disappoint. Users who prefer traditional data entry may take advantage of the integrated keyboard with scroll feature and programmable touchpad, while those who prefer "handwriting" via digital ink can utilize the enclosed stylus and eraser to freehand sketch their ideas on the display screen.

But there's far more to like than input versatility in this, one of Acer's most advanced tablets. Driving the unit is a snappy 1.5 GHz Intel Pentium M CPU, 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory, and an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 video chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system will suffice for practically any typical mobile or midlevel desktop task, but may have trouble efficiently displaying high-end 3-D games and animations.

The system features today's most desirable connectivity options, including two ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, a single FireWire port for attaching external devices such as digital video cameras, an RJ-45 LAN port for fast network access and Internet interaction, a low-speed dial-up 56K modem, and an 802.11b wireless LAN with internal antenna. Data handling components include an average-sized 40 GB hard disk and a detachable CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can archive data, install applications, burn and play audio CDs and enjoy the latest DVD movies.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Tablet PC Edition operating system and a wide variety of general and tablet-specific utilities. Battery life is estimated at a commendable 3.0 hours in ideal conditions. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Died early
I purchased my Acer from Amazon with great anticipation. I had read a lot of reviews about the various features and it seemed very promising. My son had also purchased one and he was pleased with it. Mine came and I was very excited - but the fun lasted for a very short time. The Microsoft Tablet software (Journal and the free download trial version of OneNote)while being hyped as great - weren't. And so my productivity dreams vanished within a couple days. Then the screen became unpredictable, and in a short time I could not get it to work at all. I returned the unit to Amazon and now wonder if I will ever try another tablet pc. Probably not, because the current software is designed for scribblers and note takers not organized document makers. I really do hope that some company will take the tablet seriously enough to make it lightweight, cool, bright, and powerful enough to do the work of regular notebook. And also for Microsoft to work on a tablet pc word processor at least a little bit like Word. ... Read more

Driven by a 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor incorporating Centrino technology, a perfectly adequate 512 MB of main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2 graphics chipset with shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Gateway 200Xa isn't ready for high-end 3-D animation or taxing 3-D games but will make quick work of most common desktop applications. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great little machine, particularly with a few upgrades
This computer is spectacular, it looks great and also runs well. It is very small, but the keyboard is of usable size and has a good feel to it (my old gateway notebook definitely had a bit of a flimsy feel to it).

A few things:
1) GET THE HIGH CAPACITY BATTERY. The stock battery is awful, but such is life. Don't order it from gateway though, check out other places, such as a particular online warehouse with a three letter name. I got mine for almost 1/2 the price Gateway was charging there, and the service was a lot better.
2) The speakers suck too. The computer is less than 1" think. What do you expect? They're finally beginning to come out with wi-fi products that will use your connection to stream music from your computer to your stereo. I can't wait to get my hands on one, until then, plug it into to your stereo or use headphones.
3) Adding more RAM is highly recommended. I added an additional 512MB that I got from a well-known auction site for $50. The difference is immediately noticable; XP devours RAM.
4) Download iTunes. Seriously, even if you don't want to download music from them, it has to be the most user-friendly (not to mention free and visually pleasing) music library managment software on the planet.
5) STAY UPDATED. Every time you read about an attack, its because people don't update their OS, antivirus, and firewall software/hardware. It takes a few seconds every few weeks, and any decent company will alert you to the updates automatically. This will also eliminate 99% of problems people may experience with their wi-fi connections; the software updates usually fix glitches that weren't anticipated when the product was manufactured (I use a D-Link DI-624 router, and it's been phenomenal).
6) You'll want to get a USB drive if you need to move files off-network regularly. They're compact, hold a lot, and have become really inexpensive. I ended up buying one and couldn't be happier. Or you can do as I used to: just email files to yourself and access them at your final destination (I had a habit of losing/leaving behind floppies when I was in college).

All that said, for the price, this system simply can't be beat. Even without all the extra BS I bought for mine, it's still a great notebook. It runs cool and fast and looks great. You won't find many other notebooks with these specs and functionality.

5-0 out of 5 stars slick, fantastic little machine!
I wanted a sleek looking little laptop with a decent size screen and 512mb of ram... and I got all that and more! It does everything I need, never hiccups, it's lightweight... I'm really glad I bought it. It's beauty is not only skin deep, have a look at the specs :) It's great. The only complaint... buy a backup battery... the standard one runs out so quickly.

4-0 out of 5 stars In a word, Cool
I'm going to cover what hasn't already been written about. So, here are things that make this laptop stand-out or stink-up.

Pros:
- The Centrino Chip clocks at 1.5MHz; I have heard that this translates to a P4 2.5MHz processor. This part is confusing; just know that games and applications work fast.
- Screen checks in at 14.1" which is a good working size - slightly more to carry than those 12" screens, but much more useable and it leaves room in the chassis for a full-sized keyboard.

- Comes with internal DVD/CDRW which I find really cool (as opposed to external, which would be a pain to carry).
- AC adaptor is pretty cool. It's made so you can wrap the cord around it neatly when you're not using it, and then there is a little snap thing on the plug so the cord doesn't get unraveled.
- Lots of useful external ports (2 usb's, firewire, ethernet, modem, PCMCIA slot, video out, S-video out, etc). I especially like the optical out, which I don't use, but I still like it being there.
- Wireless works well. Go Centrino technology!
- Comes with many programs inside (Windows XP, MS Works, Picture It!, Jukebox, etc)
- The battery looks cool. If you take it out, there are some little led lights and a button you press that shows how much battery life is left.
- This is one of the sleekest designs and coolest looking notebooks around. If you want to stand out from all those other black books in the airport or commuter train, you won't go wrong with the 200.

- It comes with a comprehensive hard-copy user manual (yes, printed on real paper -- not a CD or web address).
- The battery is upgradeable.

Cons:
- Yes, battery life and speakers suck. Use the high-capacity battery and a pair of headphones.
- The mouse scroll, while it is useful, takes a long time if you use it to scroll down web pages because it moves the pages down slowly
- While the screen brightness key function works well, the audio volume adjustment is annoying to use. It doesn't respond to (function) (up) or (down) very well. hard to describe, but if you get a chance to actually play around with this laptop before you buy it, try the audio up down function and you will know what I'm talking about. What would have been better is a little manual scroll wheel on the side of the computer that would control the system volume.
-Maybe it's my computer, but the battery life status doesn't seem to be completely accurate. It goes up to 99% somewhat fast, and then stays there for another 10-15 minutes before it finally says 100% charged. It's the same with low battery status, where it doesn't fall below 9%. but it does give me a warning message. (But the LED light doesn't start blinking at low battery, like the manual said it would)
- No floppy drive. I guess buying a USB flash drive will do.
- Two usb ports. While it may be sufficient to some, I wish there were more. I guess buying a USB hub will do.
-Too bad there is only space for one pc card slot
-It would have been nicer if the ethernet port was in the back of the notebook so that the cord doesn't bother my left arm, but it's no big deal.
-I hate support programs. They take up space and I feel like I have a bunch of junk programs running every day. I say if you're confident of your computer skills and can take care of the little computer problems yourself, take them out.

Overall: Yes, battery life is bad. If you need more than 2 hours get a new 6-cell one for 100 bucks. Yes, speakers are bad, but what do you expect from a 4 pound laptop? This is cool looking, good performing system without the bulk. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweet thin & light design
I've been happy with my old Gateway notebook's performance and stability, so I went to look for a sleeker, better-looking one. I found it in the 200 series. The 1.5GHz 200X looks nice inside and out and is amazingly thin and light. I can easily put it in my backpack (with a neoprene sleeve covering it) and it weighs less than a college textbook. This laptop is fast enough for everything I do on it (burning CDs, Adobe Photoshop, word processing, surfing the net, etc). Although it would've been nice if it was even faster with HT technology, but considering most centrino notebooks out there, 1.5GHz seems pretty fast already. The only comparable notebook in size and looks is the Sony Vaio PCG-Z1A, which costs over $200 more at only 1.3GHz.
Now that I've had it for a while, I've gone to the Gateway's support site to check on drivers. The site contains plenty of downloads for the 200 and decent FAQs. Better still, the site has a section where you can chat in real time with a tech-support rep and avoid telephone wait times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beauty & Brawn
The 200X has an ultramodern design -- sleek silver case, cool blue keyboard all in a slim lightweight package. Plus is has insides to back it up -- a quick 1.5Ghz Pentium M, DVD drive, 14.1-inch screen and built-in wireless. There are three buttons above the keyboard you can program to launch your favorite applications and a fourth button shines with a blue light when the integrated wireless is activated. Very nice. It also has an extremely comfortable keyboard.
The only bad news was the short battery life. Buy the optional, high-capacity battery. Armed with the new battery, the Gateway 200X lasted nearly 4 hours. With enough juice, this is a great notebook. Easily more for the money than any of the other systems I've looked at in this price range. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Suitable for anyone who needs a powerful, versatile mobile computing solution but ideal for those who appreciate the latest multimedia and home entertainment technologies, the Sony VAIO PCG-GRT360ZG Notebook PC is a beefy, comprehensive rig that will outperform and out-convenience most desktops. Sporting desirable perks such as speedy Intel Hyper-Threading processing, DVD burning, advanced television functions and a handy wireless remote, the VAIO PCG-GRT360ZG is ready for virtually any circumstance.

At 14.1 by 11.9 by 1.9 inches and 7.72 pounds (with one battery) and 9.1 pounds (with battery and optical drive), the VAIO PCG-GRT360ZG cannot be considered a true lightweight. It therefore may not be the best notebook for everyday transport. However, if you prefer processing punch to portability, the unit is ready to oblige. Sporting a commanding 3.06 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology for more efficient data throughput, a fast 533 front side bus and 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory, the VAIO PCG-GRT360ZG will easily power through any application. Sony has complemented this potent data processing "engine" with an impressive 64 MB nVidia GeForce FX Go 5600 3-D video accelerator to make quick work of graphics-intensive 3-D applications and all but the most demanding 3-D games. The unit's integrated 80 GB hard disk offers oodles of room to store important files and programs, and its detachable DVD+RW/CD-RW combo drive allows you to turn home videos into DVDs, watch the latest Hollywood releases, burn and play audio CDs and backup data.

Multimedia enthusiasts will appreciate the system's integrated stereo speakers and generous 16.1-inch SXGA+ viewing screen for its image-enhancing X-Brite technology and super-clean 1400 by 1050 maximum resolution. Other desirable amenities include a Memory Stick PRO media slot, three high-speed USB 2.0 ports, a fast IEEE 1394 port for data transfers from peripherals such as digital camcorders, and a cord-free television-style remote. To communicate with the outside world, the unit features a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access, a standard 10BASE-T/100BASE-TX Ethernet interface for high-speed connectivity, and a convenient IEEE 802.11b/802.11g wireless LAN.

Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Sony's Giga Pocket personal video recording application (for simultaneous television viewing and video recording), and a truly expansive array of audio, video and photo utilities. Battery life is not one of the system's strong points -- it delivers 1.0 to 1.5 hours of usage with one battery attached and 2.0 to 3.0 hours with an optional second battery installed in the multi-purpose bay. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and Stylish Premium Laptop
I have been a fan of the VAIO since Sony released the first 16.1" UXGA laptop. When Sony broke the 3.0 GHz barrier, I decided to upgrade my 1.6GHz GRX 500 to the new GRT series. I have been very happy with my purchase.

Like Sony's other consumer products, VAIO notebooks offer complete product refinement, with exceptional attention to detail and aesthetics that are superior to offerings from Dell, HP and Toshiba. Before purchasing my first Sony, I was an owner of a top-of-the line Dell Inspiron. An analogous comparison of the shell build quality between the two machines is the comparison of a 2004 Honda Accord and a 1990 Buick Regal. The fit and finish are vastly superior on the Sony. With the latest generation GRT 390, Sony raises the bar.

At first glance, it is appears that Sony invested a great deal into the design and manufacture of the enclosure, layout of buttons and jacks as well as the screen hinges and frames. It is much sturdier than the competition with a metallic lid paired with a metallized plastic main body enclosure. The interface, from the tactile response of the keys to the clarity of the screen is superior to products from other manufacturers. Yet, the user must experience this firsthand. While it is difficult to describe on paper, the difference becomes apparent when comparing them side-by-side in a retail store. Sony strives to create a refined package with close integration of the various hardware components. One good example is Sony's first-to-market use an integrated flash memory slot.

Unfortunately, my original VAIO GRX 500 did not hold up to the abuse of my brutal travel schedule. It had to be sent back to their sole North American repair facility in San Diego. The single-facility repair limitation is(was) the biggest problem with Sony. The GRX was not as sturdy as the GRT. The GRX500 was quite thin for its large footprint, which was made me concerned about flex and potential damage to the large screen. In the GRT, Sony has beefed up the enclosure, increasing the overall thickness by 3/8" and the weight by two pounds.

While the GRT has been fairly problem free, I had one minor, yet disturbing problem. The internal speakers started crackling for couple of weeks and then went completely dead. However, after some time, they began to work again with no difficulties. This surprised me, because such problems typically get worse.

As a true desktop replacement, it is a very fast machine. The combination of the 3.06 GHz processor and 1 GB Ram makes the GRT noticeably faster than its 1.6GHz/512 MB predecessor. My one complaint with the configuration is the lack of a 7200 RPM drive, which first came to market last year. I decided to purchase a 7200 RPM Hitachi Travelstar 7K60 and installed it before transferring my files. It was well worth the time and expense. However, it identified a major complaint I have with the GRT, which is a lack of system disks or even system restore disks. It took me about three hours to create the three DVD's (I can't imagine how long it would take to create the 20+ CD's). In my opinion, a premium laptop like this should come both with restore disks and operating systems disks. Sony claims that Microsoft restrictions are preventing the former.

My initial motivation for purchasing my first VAIO was the 16.1" UXGA screen, which was the best I have seen. It obviated the need for a separate monitor. The XBRITE technology employed in the GRT has improved the screen quality over the previous generation. By the time this model was available, other vendors were selling machines with 17" WXGA screens. The image quality is superior on GRT.

While I opted for a non-mobile processor, I have started to question my decision. It is nice that Sony offers this as an option, but the battery life is as little as 1:10:00 with WiFi enabled. In addition, the rather loud fans kick in when the processor is going full steam.

The one major concern for any user should be Sony's repair policies and capabilities. Standard repair, which was their only option until recently, can take up to ten (10) business days. Sony's sole repair facility is in San Diego. Recently, Sony added onsite service for an additional fee, but terms and conditions of what specifically can be repaired onsite are too vague for critical business use.

3-0 out of 5 stars This Vaio is good but not great
The first one I bought was DOA. The replacement works fine except that the CD writer seems very picky. Note I have had no problems with DVD writing.
Pros The best screen I have ever seen until it gets dirty.
Huge hard drive.
Very fast.
Plays BF Vietnam better than my 2gh desktop.
Upgradeable to 2 Gig of memory if you can afford it.
If you want to do video editing on your laptop this one is
great.
Cons Very Heavy and requires a big bag.
Massive power supply needs a big bag.
4200 rpm Hard drive slows down an otherwise fast machine.
Odd design on lid leads to notebook opening in bag unless
well secured.
No PS2 ports.
Glossy screen is murder to clean.
Incredibly hot when running full bore. Will actually heat
up table top around it.
Sony's in general seem very well put together. I also own a PCG FX 190 and apart from Sony's famous lack of support for new operating systems, it is the only notebook I have owned for 3 years that did not require servicing. The top of the line Tosh Tecra and Dell latitude I owned failed in the first six months. It was really a shame that the first GRT360 was dead on arrival I wonder if this is a sign of the machine being made in China the other Sony I owned was made in the USA. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Optimized for performance and mobility, the compact, lightweight HP Pavilion zt3170us notebook PC comes loaded with multimedia and productivity power. Running a fast 1.6 GHz Intel Centrino (Pentium M) processor, the zt3170us also features a combo DVD/CD writer, Secure Digital card slot for easy transfer of digital photos, built-in wireless LAN (802.11b), and Bluetooth connectivity. It also offers a huge 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a 15.4-inch screen.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB (4200 RPM) hard drive offers plenty of space for most users, and is more than enough for typical data--from spreadsheets and word processing files to your digital snapshots. However, if you plan on traveling with a large multimedia library, 40 GB probably isn't enough for you. It also has a 1024 KB L2 cache.
  • Processor: The 1.6 GHz Pentium M processor is considered at the middle of speed range compared with other Centrino notebooks (with current speed topping out at 1.7 GHz). Because of its design, the Intel Pentium M gets more done per clock tick than a Mobile Intel Pentium 4, thus providing the discrepancy in GHz measurement (i.e., 1.7 versus 3.2). The Pentium M processor is designed specifically for low-power mobile usage, and it features the latest in power-saving technologies--ensuring you push your battery and productivity to the max.
  • Memory: The zt3170us comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 2.05 GB (2 x 1024 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo drive that is capable of reading and writing of both DVDs and CDs (4x DVD+R, 2.4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-ROM, 16x CD-R, 10x CD-RW, 40x CD-ROM). It uses the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The zt3170us has a 101-key keyboard and touchpad with on/off button and dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad.
Sound and Graphics
You'll get crisp, clear sound via the integrated 16-bit Sound Blaster Pro-compatible audio card. The zx5040us features internal Harman Kardon speakers.

The installed ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 IGP video/graphics card is a relatively strong 3-D graphics renderer, and it has 32 MB of shared video memory. The 15.4-inch WXGA WVA TFT active matrix LCD has a native 1280 x 800 pixel display.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The zt3170us has an Intel Pro-Wireless 2100 integrated wireless LAN that connects using the 802.11b wireless standard, which is not exactly in step with the latest in wireless networking--54g, or 802.11g. It also offers Bluetooth wireless connectivity, for communicating with peripherals like keyboards, mice, printers, and more. You get a good offering of connectivity options, including both high-speed USB 2.0 and FireWire:

  • 3 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 1 RGB monitor port
  • 1 TV-out (S-Video)
  • 1 PS/2 port for connecting keyboard or mouse
  • 1 PCMCIA (or PC Card) slot (Type I/II 16-bit with support and 32-bit card bus)
  • 1 FIR (fast infrared)
  • 1 headphone jack and 1 microphone jack
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92), and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The zt3170us comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Norton Antivirus 2003 (with 60 days of complimentary live updates), Quicken, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe, Adobe Acrobat Reader, InterVideo WinDVD SE (for playing DVD movies) and WinDVD Creator, MusicMatch Jukebox, and Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator (Basic).

Dimensions and Weight
At 14 x 10 x 1.24 inches (L x W x H), the zt3170us is one of the slimmest notebooks around--and it weighs only 6.5 pounds.

Power
The included rechargeable lithium-ion battery has 8 cells (which refers to the number of charge-storing components within the battery) and offers a standard amount of power for a notebook PC (around 2 hours of typical use).

What's in the Box
This package includes the HP Pavilion zt3170us notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring a slim, lightweight profile and the many other advantages of Intel's revolutionary Centrino technology, the Acer TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G) Notebook PC should warrant serious consideration by anyone who spends a lot of time on the road or in remote locations.

Centrino is not merely a clever marketing ploy. Rather, it is a trio of interrelated components (a super-efficient Intel Pentium M processor, an Intel 855 chipset and an Intel PRO/Wireless network connection 802.11b) that work hand-in-hand to increase battery life, reduce weight and improve performance beyond that of other similarly rated notebooks. In the case of the TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G), that processor is a midlevel Intel Pentium M CPU running at 1.4 GHz.

Acer has added a generous 512 MB main memory, which, along with the processor's impressive 1 MB Level 2 cache, assures you of satisfactory speed even during heavy-duty multitasking sessions. General performance is not on par with that of a high-end Pentium 4-based machine, but certainly good enough for virtually any standard mobile task. The system's graphics controller, an Intel Extreme Graphics 2 chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, will efficiently display older and less complex 3-D games and 3-D design programs, but doesn't have quite enough muscle for the current breed of high-end 3-D games.

Measuring 13.1 by 10.9 by 1.3 by 1.6 inches and weighing just 6.2 pounds, the TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G) is more compact and therefore more easily transported than most notebooks. At 40 GB, the system's hard disk is satisfactory for storing a flock of applications and files but not spacious enough for those who also want to maintain a large multimedia library. The enclosed DVD Dual drive will allow you to burn audio files to CD, archive data, watch DVD movies and write DVDs in both of today's most popular formats, DVD- and DVD+. Like all but one model in the TravelMate 290 series, the unit sports a large 15-inch XGA TFT viewing screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolutions.

Connectivity options are quite reasonable. To help you communicate with the outside world, the TravelMate 290 (291LMi-G) features a standard 56K dial-up modem, a high-speed 10/100 LAN connection for fast network interaction, and, of course, an Intel PRO/Wireless network connection 802.11b for those times when you just can't plug in. Other key amenities include three fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an 84-key keyboard with programmable touchpad, an IEEE 1394 "FireWire" port (commonly used for fast data downloads from digital camcorders, and FIR (fast infrared) technology for cordless communication with FIR-equipped gadgets such as PDAs.

Under ideal conditions, battery life expectancy is a stunning 5.5 hours. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Value and performance for the buck!
Acer has come a long way with its 290 series. This particular model seems to be a genuine winner with its unbelieveable price.
Out of the box the Acer looks sleek with no real curves. It has sleek styling with a titanium alloy lid with sturdy gray contrasting plastic base. It looks like a block, very stylish and comtemporary, somthing like Bang and Olufsen would put out.
Startup time is really unbelieveable at a staggering 29 seconds (XP Pro). Applications run smooth and trouble free. The 64 MB shared video RAM is utilized well with no real performance hindrance. When I used dual display at 1024 pixels the output was slightly choppy on DVD video, but on any single screen it is smooth and flowing.
The real advantage with this model is that it incorporates wireless / wired ethernet, firewire port, 3 USB ports and still allows room for expansion via the PCMCIA slot. Not only that but it also comes with a DVD and CD burner with rewritable capabilities. Battery life on normal use with speakers playing mp3's is a long long 4 hours minimum.
My only two real complaints with this laptop was the display options are limited (XGA Maximum - 1024 by 768). Would be perfect to get this with the SXGA screen but I guess thats a slight let down. The other small problem was that there is no physical buttons for adjusting the volume, but rather has to be done using the function key on the keyboard. Hence half a point for each had to be removed from the 5 total.
Overall, the Centrino provides for a great mobile computing experience with its exceptional battery life. Graphics are good, by no means the best, and everything works smoothly out of the box. Also this was a great buy since it comes with the Acer one year warranty that is applicable internationally. 4 stars, well done Acer, well done. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Compact and battery efficient yet as powerful and versatile as many larger, bulkier portable computers, the Gateway 450X is a smart choice for those who put equal emphasis on performance and portability. Those who regularly push the capabilities of their notebook with complex professional applications, deep multitasking or 3-D games should perhaps explore Gateway's M500X series, which incorporates a more capable video card and double the RAM memory, but this model should suffice for light- to medium workloads.

In the case of the Gateway 450X, that processor is a 1.4 GHz Intel Pentium M. Along for the ride is a somewhat minimal alloent of 256 MB DDR SDRAM memory and an ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics controller (32 MB dedicated video memory). In this configuration, the unit will certainly suffice for typical mobile tasks.

Measuring just 13.1 by 10.6 by 1.3 inches and tipping the scales at a mere 6.13 pounds with optical drive and battery installed, the Gateway 450X is a very compact unit. It does, however, feature several impressive mobile features, including an adequate 40 GB hard disk and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM combo drive through which you can play and burn audio CDs, archive data and enjoy DVD movies. DVD writing is not supported. At 15 inches, its display is larger than might be expected, and capable of an extremely accurate 1400 by 1050 resolution. Communication options include not only a standard 56K dial-up modem and a 10/100 Ethernet network adapter, but also an integrated 802.11b wireless connection for those times when you can't or don't want to plug in.

Other important amenities include a pair of high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external peripherals such as scanners or digital cameras, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (typically used for digital camcorder downloads), a VGA port for external monitors and a parallel "printer" port, but no S-Video TV-out.

Bundled software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works Suite 7.0 and a 90-day free trial with Norton AntiVirus. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well-balanced middle weight
I've used the Gateway 450X for several months now and find it to be a solid, reliable full-featured laptop that strikes a decent balance between weight and features.

The case is sleek, thin and modern, but plastic not metal (don't let the silver color mislead you).

The screen is bright with fine detail.

The keyboard is responsive with good feel. The wrist rest is a little deep compared to the ideal and there is only a touchpad, no pointing stick. However, the touchpad is better than many. I have an HP that drives me crazy with an overly sensitive touchpad.

The 450X has very good battery life and good wireless performance. I use a Linksys wireless network and the 450X has better range with its built-in wireless than older laptops with add-in cards.

There are some trade-offs. The optical drive is a good DVD-CD/RW combo drive, but no DVD writer is available. Similarly, the speakers are not really adequate for a multi-media presentation platform.

Gateway's dock or port replicator plugs into a slot on the bottom of the laptop case and promotes ventilation and a good typing angle. The availability of a port replicator was a requirement in my selection process (so you can leave printers and other peripherals plugged into the dock). I highly recommend this accessory. It makes working with a laptop much easier.

This is not a video creation platform, but for everyday work in Microsoft Office and web browsing, it's a great laptop with balanced features and excellent pricing.

I also recommend Gateway's service and support. Support information is individualized to your actual machine. Gateway's website resolves most issues for me without resort to techs, but when techs are necessary they are located in the United States and have consistently been helpful. This is my sixth Gateway computer and the service and support system is a key reason for coming back. ... Read more
