Amazon.com Product Description

Futuristically styled in a sleek silver chassis, the Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 Notebook PC is a nifty amalgamation of the features most important to the majority of portable computer users. Powerful but not at the expense of added weight and sporting such amenities as integrated wireless connectivity and a widescreen display, this is a great unit for personal, leisure and midlevel business applications.

Measuring 14.1 by 10.6 by 1.4 inches and weighing just 6.2 pounds, the Satellite M35-S320 Notebook is rather wide but comfortably slim and quite portable. Toshiba has based the system on Intel's Centrino technology, whereby three interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full MB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- work together to keep your notebook lightweight, wirelessly connected, power efficient, and faster than its rated CPU speed might indicate. Driven by a quick 1.5 GHz Pentium M CPU, 512 MB RAM memory (expandable to 2 full GB) and a nVidia GeForce FX graphics controller with 32 MB of dedicated video memory, the unit is ready for most typical 2-D and 3-D tasks, though it may have trouble smoothly displaying the sophisticated 3-D imaging of today's most complex three-dimensional games and graphic design suites.

The system's large 60 GB hard disk offers enough storage space for all your regular data and a substantial library of multimedia files too, and its CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive allows you to listen to and burn audio CDs, archive data to durable digital media, and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. Other welcome amenities include a generous 15.4-inch display in DVD-friendly widescreen 16:9 format, an 85-key keyboard with 12 hotkeys, a TouchPad pointing device with scroll function, and integrated harman/kardon stereo speakers.

With the Satellite M35-S320 Notebook, communication options are virtually limitless. In environments with wired connections, you can select from a 56K dial-up modem or high-speed 10/100 Ethernet LAN. When hardwiring is a problem, you can stay in touch via integrated IntelPRO/Wireless 2100 LAN. Other key components include three fast USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external plug and play devices such as scanners and digital cameras, an S-Video TV--out, and an infrared port for wireless communication with PDAs and the like. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh lord!!
Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 doesn't dissapoint me at all. Centrino really works, allowing me to keep on working for hours. The battery can last up to 3.5 hrs and it can work well despite the heat that is building up!! have fun watching movies and playing games!!! the only bad thing: the volume is too soft whille watching movie and a bit too big and heavy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I went big
It was time to upgrade and I thought I wanted one of those mini laptops, you know the ones so small they don't even have an optical drive. Well I found one, the sony vaio v505, that did. However I ended up going for the toshiba machine because I realized that I would be using it as much or more at a central site than on the road. I am in med school and travel to different cities for weeks at a time for rotations. I need the portability of a laptop, but like the convenience of something nice to look at, enter the widescreeen. In a word it is magnificent. The notebook itself is very thin and although you feel the weight in your bag, it is not cumbersome. The things I like best about this laptop are its screen, sleek look, but more importantly great processor speed and good battery life. The utility config free is great and makes it a snap to connect to the internet, truly config free. The wifi is great too, my first run-in with them so no basis for comparison. I am rarely somewhere that I don't have an outlet, funny how most hospitals need electricity, so I carry the power cord, I wish they made a more portable version, and my travel mouse, I hate touch pads. The sound from the built in speakers is good, they don't sound tinny and don't break up at louder volumes, but don't forget they are less than an inch in diameter.

I do have a list of nit picky negatives, it's just the way my mind works, and I am also very wary of a review that has no negatives. First it could be lighter, but you could say that about any laptop. Secondly, I wish there were more usb ports, it has 3 all on the right side. You can buy one of those port splitters, but again its a laptop and too much bulk gets you away from the reason you bought one in the first place. Next, the IR port is on the front, and while I haven't needed to use it for a printer it seems an odd place to put it. Probably on either side near the back would be better. Finally, it doesn't come with Office 2003, you can buy it for $149, but then the value for the system comes down a little bit.

Overall, this computer is a do-it-all all-star. If you want to play games it handles them with ease, if you want to watch movies the widescreen is unusually good at it, if you want to write a research paper and have the accompanying PP presentation on the effects of lispro on gestational diabetes you can do that too. It works on the road and as a desktop too. I am very happy with it and am glad I went big!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Desktop Replacement
When it was time to replace my old Gateway desktop, I began the task of researching brands and products. As another reviewer said, I was drawn to Toshiba by their low repair history. I had horrible experience with resolution of any issue using Gateway support (their advice was always uninstall everything and see if it works), and immediately knocked them off my list. My old IBM laptop is also extinct and parts are so expensive ($250 for a battery???) so they were off the list as well.

I am very happy with this computer. I have eliminated my desktop and gained a better display, larger hard drive and overall great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great package, reliable brand
Got this laptop a week ago and I just love it. Being a computer nut, and a computer programmer, I had to pick a machine that would work well with my tasks. So far this one is handling the processor-intensive tasks I need very well. After realizing that I had been working on my old Pentium III 900MHz 512MB desktop for more than three years and still not feeling the urgent need to upgrade that one, I concluded that I'll probably use this laptop as a full replacement for my old warrior and not need to upgrade laptops in a long time.
The main factor when I decided for the Toshiba after comparing different brands was the reliability and reputation of this brand. Seriously, everytime I take some equipment (TVs VCRs, etc) for service at the retail store I notice the high number of HP and Sony Vaio laptops piling up the shelves. After Compaq merger with HP, and seeing their models similiarities, I'm now scared of Compaqs too. I took Dell out of the contest because of a personal bad experience with tech support and bad drivers I got in the past. All this, combined with the great price and package made it almos a no-brainer for me.
One thing that would make this one even better would be a multi-card-format reader instead of the SD-only reader. But I can live without that with my USB flash drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent laptop and reasonable price
The laptop is just too good. Excellent audio and video and makes up a good cinemascope screen and good theater like environment for watching DVDs.
Connects to wi-fi network with ease.
Portability also good but some may not like the 15" WXGA screen which makes the laptop look lil big but then if you go for a lesser screen you clearly lose the clarity.
Keyboard is springy and not hard like other laptops but I would buy an additional set of mouse and keyboard.
I found the DVD drive to be too gentle and sometimes fear if that would come out if I use a bit of force.
Overall it is my dream machine and hope it would be the same for you too.
Happy Toshiba-ing ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
An excellent entry-level portable computer for students or "notebook lite" for businesspeople, the Toshiba Satellite A65-S126 Notebook PC delivers adequate speed, wireless communication and plenty of storage space at a favorable price point. If you want to play games, burn DVDs, or impress your friends with raw power, you'll want to explore one of Toshiba's other models, but for basic computing such as word processing, finances, Internet/email and CD burning, the Satellite A65-S126 is up to the task without breaking the bank.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, though these machines are usually noticeably larger and more power hungry than their less powerful counterparts. Intel's cost-effective Celeron processor often forms the basis for budget-priced machines, and the Satellite A65-S126 is no different. A 2.8 GHz Celeron powers the unit, delivering sufficient speed and power for general duty but not enough for serious multitasking, super-sophisticated business apps or the latest games. Power users would do well to check into Pentium 4-powered notebooks.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM). More RAM means faster computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite A65-S126 incorprates 256 MB of RAM, the bare minimum for the vast majority of today's notebooks and not enough for efficient multitasking. The unit does allow you to increase the amount of RAM to 1280 MB, but at extra cost.

Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP with 64 MB of shared video memory. The Radeon name is highly regarded in video technology, and indeed this system and this chipset will efficiently deal with 2D graphics and do a reasonable job with simple 3D visuals such as those found in older games and entry-level 3D animation. However, it will not competently display the latest high-end 3D computer games and the like.

Display:
The unit's 15-inch TFT active matrix display is standard for midlevel notebooks. It is not a widescreen display such as those found in some of today's more pricey units, and therefore does not offer the panoramic perspective favored for movies. Its highest supported resolution of 1024 by 768 is also standard.

Hard Disk:
The Satellite A65-S126 features a solid 60 GB of hard disk space. This amount of data storage is surprising in a notebook at this price range, providing enough room for general applications and files and a small library of music or multimedia files too.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive that supports all of the above apart from DVD recording.

Audio:
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound through its two stereo speakers.

Keyboard and Controls:
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard with HotKey function and a TouchPad pointing device.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The Satellite A65-S126 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an RJ-45 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated wireless LAN for cordless e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, and a TV-out port. An IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders) is not included.

Operating System and Software:
Toshiba has fitted the system with today's most widely accepted operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Satellite A65-S126 is considered average by today's standards, at 13.2 by 11.7 by 1.9 inches and 7.7 lbs.

Power:
The system is equipped with an 8-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that delivers 1.5 hours between charges. This is not particularly efficient when compared with notebooks making use of Intel's Centrino technology and Pentium M processor, and is just slightly less than average even for most entry-level notbooks. ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Tech Support
Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.

2-0 out of 5 stars lackluster support , reliability poor
Three laptops.
5 service depot repairs in the first six months.
Three system board replacements.
One laptop not fully functional on day one.
Buy extra hard drive if you have a fleet; parts shortage delayed a repair to 30 days.
What's the point of a lightweight laptop if you need to send a spare with your users 'just in case' another failure occurs?

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Notebook
I've owned a Portege 2000 for a few months now, and work on it, full time, everyday - no desktop. Right now, I'm writing this review while hooked up to my home wireless network with cable modem access. I have had no problems with the built-in wireless features of the notebook. The battery life is the best I've every come across. The keyboard is "full-sized", and has a good "touch". The touchpad is a little small, but after I got used to it - it works well. I purchased the optional docking station which I keep at my office, and recommend it also. While it doesn't have alot of features, it does provide a quick way to hook up to my office's wired network and an AC power source. The lack of built-in floppy and CD drives may be a concern if you don't tie into a network. Doesn't come with a lot of software (no MS Office, MS Works, or WordPerfect Office), but these can be loaded once you have it. I've found that most machines come with too much junk software anyway, so this was refreshing. The notebook has a slot for a Secure Digital memorary card - which is a nice feature as many digital cameras (but not mine), and some PDAs (including my Toshiba E570 - another great product) have this slot / use this card which makes data transfer very simple. What else can I say - it looks cool, and the light weight is amazing. It is not a great "gaming machine", but it doesn't claim to be. In short - the perfect business machine for person who carries their notebook regularly, and is the networked.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome ultra-light
If you don't care about the lack of a CD-ROM or a floppy, this little laptop is the greatest ultralight. With the extended life battery I get around 6 hours of continuous operation at my normal levels (if you dim the screen a lot, you can get closer to 8). It's comfortable, quiet, and reasonably fast. What it loses in lack of removable storage media (like a CD-R) it makes up in networking--it comes with integrated wired ethernet, wireless, and a modem. This little laptop rocks.

On a less utilitarian note, this laptop is really small and sleek. You'll be proud to show this one off to your friends and family. They don't get much cooler-looking than this.

For those of you who care about it, Linux installs with very little headache (and less for you than me now that I've figured out all the things that *don't* work; see [URL] for my install notes).

4-0 out of 5 stars [A lot of money] for 256mb memory
Great, light, thin ... really really cool! Problem: Uses non-standard memory. Cost [alot] for a 256MB upgrade (almost 25% of the laptop cost!) !!!! Compaq, Dell and Gateway have ultra's very similar to this either out or coming out in the next few weeks .... their 256MB memory upgrades can be bought for $75. Unfortunately this is going to have to go back for that reason. I need the memory. [the cost] is outrageous! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Though it isn't designed to efficiently run more powerful high-end programs, Toshiba's new Satellite 1415-S105 Notebook will certainly suffice for anyone who works with typical mobile computing applications. Furthermore, it's quipped with a big display screen and all the perks you need to watch a movie or burn an audio CD. Well suited to those who need to keep tabs on their budget but want the most for their money, the Satellite 1415-S105 is a complete mid-range notebook solution.

Powered by a 1.6 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256 MB RAM (expandable to 512 MB) and an Nvidia GeForce4 420 Go graphics controller with 16 MB of internal memory, the system is sufficient for standard business and personal applications and even some light gaming, but will have trouble with complex 3-D animation and drawing packages and the current crop of 3-D games. Toshiba has included an adequate 20 GB hard disk and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive through which you can record and listen to music, backup important data and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. The unit does not support DVD burning as configured.

At 12.8 by 11.2 by 1.7 inches and 7.7 pounds, the Satellite 1415-S105 is comfortable to carry and easy to manage. With a surprisingly generous 15-inch display screen (1024 by 768 maximum resolution), a full-size 85-key keyboard and TouchPad pointing device and a wide variety of useful internal and external function and multimedia controls, it's easy to operate too. Toshiba has included a number of useful amenities, including a 3.5-inch diskette drive, three USB ports, an integrated 56K modem for low-speed connectivity and a 10/100 Ethernet LAN connection for high-speed surfing and network interaction. The unit does not feature high-speed USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394 ports, and therefore is not ideal for fast data transfer to and from peripherals such as digital camcorders. Under ideal conditions, battery life is estimated at 2.52 hours. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars help me out plz
hi

my friend is offering me this very laptop for $450/-. his is under a year old and in good shape. do u think this is a not-to-be-lost offer or can i get a better deal elsewhere with the same one or a new one of similar configuration? mail me
ramtanuj at yhoo dot comm

thx.

5-0 out of 5 stars great features from a reputable company
I've had this laptop for about 11 months now and I really can't say anything bad about it.

loads of features that are listed in the other reviews but one that's been missed is the BUILT IN wireless antennae. That means you install the card inside the laptop and don't have to deal with an antennae sticking out the side ready to break off.

I have found I can get nearly the 2.5 hour battery life if I don't use the cd-rom drive.

I ended up paying only seven hundred fifty dollars after rebates from best buy.

I would recomend the upgrade to 512 meg of ram though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too expensive on amazon
First off [money] is way to much for this computer, I got mine from [my local electronics store] for [money] after rebates. Although you probably won't see if for under [money], don't pay [money]. This computer is awesome for the price I paid. The Geforce 420 go will play ArmyOps which is a game that says it requires 32mb of video memory, but I can run it at about 30fps on this computer. I have had absoultely no problems with it so far. You can really squeeze all the life out of this baby, you can make it work really hard. The hard drive is a little small by today's standards but it's all right. I recently bought a pc card to give me usb 2.0 for my external dvd+r/rw drive, and it cooks off the dvd's like a top. It has an option to play cd's and digital media files with the cover closed and the computer off, and I have really taken advantage of that. Don't hesitate to buy because you don't think it will perform, It has done anything i have asked it to do and it did it fast and well; and i ask some pretty demanding things. With the proper software it will compress and convert digital media files, this is the only place I have ever maxed out the processor. It can burn cd's, play movies, play some fairly decent 3d games, however I doubt it's ability to play future graphic intensive games. After I upgraded the memory to 512mb it has been much better about recovering from full screen games etc. I feel that because it has a geforce 420 go card it does outperform my sisters toshiba laptop with 32mb integrated intel video memory, with games anyway. Again this is an awesome bang for the buck computer. It probably won't run AutoCAD 2004, but it is an awesome laptop for anything the average, or even technical person can throw at it.

4-0 out of 5 stars a great buy
When I decided to buy a laptop for grad school, I made a list of requirements:
-20 GB drive
-network card
-CD burner
-nice-sized screen
-Windows XP
-Word
-cheap (under a grand)

This is the only computer that gave me everything I needed (except for Word), and from a company known for great laptops.
It's been a month now, and I couldn't be happier. Setup was quick and painless, the computer itself runs pretty fast, battery life is acceptable (2.5 hours), and the DVD combo drive is a nice feature.

Two caveats:
-It gets HOT. As someone's already said, don't plan on setting it on your lap for any length of time.
-The touch pad is tempermental. It works great sometimes, and takes some coaxing others. I'm buying a notebook mouse, since I hate touch pads, anyway :).

Overall, a great first laptop that I really recommend for students on a budget (like me). And about Word--I just downloaded OpenOffice for free and like it better!

4-0 out of 5 stars another comparison to HP&Compaq alternatives
...

The Toshiba Satellite 1415-S105 can't beat the cheaper HP x125 on any grade except for sceen size (and there is a catch to that).

Let's compare these two models:

HP Pavilion xt125
CPU: 1.6 GHz Celeron (Built on a P4 core with a smaller cache)
RAM: 256 MB DDR RAM - Good
20GB hard drive - Good enough
Graphics Card: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 7500C w/32MB - very good
Display Diagonal Size: 14 inches - Fine
LCD Resolution: 1024x768 - Good for a 14"

Toshiba Satellite 1415-S105 (cost 10% more)
CPU: 1.6 GHz Celeron
RAM: 256 MB DDR RAM - Good
20GB hard drive - Good enough
Graphics Card: nVIDIA GeForce4 420 Go w/16MB - pretty good
Display Diagonal Size: 15 inches - Good
LCD Resolution: 1024x768 - Not great for a 15"

Summary: The xt125 has a better graphic chipset, and a smaller screen that uses the same number of pixels as the Toshiba. What does that mean? Well the better graphics chipset on the HP will run 3D games and applications better. The larger screen on the Toshiba uses the same number of pixels as the 14" screen on the HP, so the image on the Toshiba won't be as sharp. So if you really want a 15" and you don't care about screen quality, this might be okay for you. Personally I think a 15" LCD screen aught to have 1280x1024 pixels. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Although it isn’t the most powerful portable on the market, the Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 notebook will effectively handle most day-to-day computing tasks and a variety of multimedia applications without breaking your bank account. If you don’t have a compelling need for the most recent top-of-the-line components, the 1415-S173 is a wise choice.

Toshiba takes advantage of the recent glut of high-end processors by utilizing a cost-effective yet very capable 1.8 GHz Intel Celeron. It has paired this CPU with 256 MB of PC1600 DDR SDRAM (expandable to 512 MB), a 400 MHz system bus, and a 16 MB nVidia Go 420 graphics controller. While this level of performance won’t be enough to satisfy 3-D artisans or hard-core gamers, it's more than enough for most standard notebook purposes.

The 1415-S173 isn’t just for business either. Using its multifunction DVD/CD-RW drive, you can watch a movie or play a music CD, burn your own compilation audio disc, or archive your important files. Whatever you do, the system’s generous 15-inch TFT active-matrix display will capably render your images at resolutions up to 1,024 x 768.

You’ll find lots of other goodies inside the unit’s 12.8-by-11.2-by-1.7-inch, 8-pound frame, including a full-size 85-key keyboard, 12 one-touch Internet and multimedia buttons, a convenient touchpad pointing device, a sizable 30 GB hard disk, and a convenient 3.5-inch floppy disk drive. The system features a wide variety of connections, including three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, two multipurpose PC card slots, a 56K modem for low-speed connectivity, and 10/100 Ethernet support for high-speed surfing and e-mail access.

Toshiba has equipped the 1415-S173 with a broad range of popular software, including Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, and Norton AntiVirus 2002. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
This machine is awesome for its price! I bought it 2 weeks ago and I'm very satisfied so far. Although the 1415-S173 features a Celeron, the 'lite' chip from Intel, it has a full 256 KB of L2 cache so its performance nearly matches those of the far more expensive Pentium 4 chips (since until 'Northwood' core arrived, P4s featured 256 KB L2 caches). Besides, the processor is a mobile battery-friendly chip.

The laptop's hard drive is pretty fast and spacious; its DVD/CDRW unit works flawlessly and is among the less noisy units I've ever seen. It burns CDs at a 24X speed! DVD or DIVX reproduction is as smooth as a silk (not to mention DIVX encoding, is fast!). Ok, it has 'only' 16 MB of video memory but' those are real MB, not shared ones, so their performance is a way better if compared to most laptop graphics within the price range. Also, the graphics chip, which is what really makes the difference, is a speedy GeForce 4 Go 420! (NOT an ATI M6-C). This machine shines in games (they look gorgeous in its huge and bright 15' screen), even in some newer ones like NFS 6 or Unreal Tournament 2003 (maybe it doesn't matches the standards of high end desktop graphics of course, but those titles were still perfectly playable).

My only complaint about this machine is its weight' you should have strong shoulders if you want to carry it around. However, I still give it an A+

4-0 out of 5 stars Good mobile desktop - one of the best in this price range
This is a very good machine for users looking for a mobile desktop. It has all the key features for a mobile desktop: powerful Intel CPU, DVD, CD-RW, 15" screen, plenty of RAM and HDD space.

The CPU was built by Intel to be used in desktops, not notebooks; that mean it uses more power and runs a little hotter. Toshiba has been using desktop CPU in their low cost machines because they cost less. If (like many users) you tend to plug your notebook in and use it at a desk, then this is a pretty good deal. If you are looking for a thin, light, long life notebook that will sit on your lap for long periods, then this isn't the machine for you (those machines are much higher up the price ladder).

The graphics on this notebook are okay, but they won't run newer 3D games very well. They are great for moderate gaming, CAD work, or watching DVDs. In all fairness there are very few notebooks in this price range that have 3D gaming quality graphics. The HP xt125 is an exception to this rule if you really want a gaming capable notebook (it has it's own tradeoffs like a 14" screen). If you "want it all" you will have to spend a bit more money.

This is a low cost notebook so you don't quite get everything. The quality of the components is good, but not first rate, the battery life isn't a long as more expensive offerings, and this isn't a notebook built for hardcore gamers. But if you want a powerful computer you can carry around with a large screen, then you won't find many that compare in this price range.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173, is my favourite
toshiba satellite is one of the best product to i ever like in the whole of my life. The toshiba note book is the best in which all person should afford to buy. But in Nigeria to even get one of this laptop, it is very difficult for me myself to get it and i want you amazon company to consider me and bring the price lower so that i can buy it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Mouse Crashes after Hibernation
When waking the computer after hibernation mode, the built in mouse no longer works unless the computer is rebooted, which is tricky to do without a mouse.

5-0 out of 5 stars For the money, more than you would expect.
After having it almost a year, I had to leave a review as a testimony to Toshiba. I have never regretted buying this machine. Excellent! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Developed to appeal to those who value extreme portability over incredible speed, Toshiba's new Portégé R100 Notebook PC tips the scales at an astonishingly lightweight 2.3 pounds and measures just 11.3 by 9 by .7 inches. Though it doesn't pack enough punch or storage for true power users, the Portégé R100 is perfect for situations where a typical notebook is simply too big or bulky.

Driving the Portégé R100 is a 900 MHz Intel Pentium M processor, 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory, and a Trident XP4m32 LP graphics chipset with 32 MB video memory. Though Toshiba asserts the unit will outperform comparably configured systems with a higher clock speed by integrating processor, system chipset, and wireless LAN into a complete mobile solution, serious gamers and anyone into high-end processor-intensive applications should look elsewhere. Nevertheless, typical notebook users should find the unit quite satisfactory for the majority of standard mobile tasks.

The Portégé R100 offers several alternatives for data storage and transfer. Inside the main case you'll find a comparatively small 20 GB hard drive. Residing externally to the main case and connected via a PC card slot is a DVD-ROM drive for playing CDs and DVDs, installing programs, and the like. It is important to note that CD and DVD writing is not supported in this stock configuration. Furthermore, the system's size will increase accordingly whenever this drive is attached.

Surprisingly, the Portégé R100's display screen is only slightly smaller and no less capable than that of a standard notebook, at 12 inches and 1024 by 768 resolution. Other key amenities include an 84-key keyboard with 12 function keys and HotKey function and dual high-speed USB 2.0 ports for external peripherals. Connectivity options are ample, including an RJ-45 LAN port, an RJ-11 modem port, state-of-the-art Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN, and Bluetooth support. Battery life is estimated at 2 hours with its primary cell and a startling 6.8 hours with a high capacity battery. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's Satellite P25-S509 combines the computing performance of a desktop computer and the audio/video performance of a personal entertainment system into a single, portable system. It features an 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, spacious 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and built-in 802-11g wireless connectivity.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The large 80 GB hard drive is on the high end of hard drive sizes for currently available notebook PCs. It's more than enough for storing your business documents or a very respectable collection of digital audio files.
  • Processor: A 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) powers the P25-S509, which offers more than enough speed for everyday and business computing tasks.
  • Memory: The P25-S509 comes preloaded with 512 MB of DDR SDRAM; the computer has two slots with a maximum memory expansion of 2 GB.
  • CD/DVD Drive: The DVD multi-drive is capable of reading and writing DVD (DVD-R/RW format) and CD disks. It has the following write speeds: CD-R (16x), CD-R/W (4x), DVD-R (2x), DVD-R/W (1x), DVD-RAM (2x).
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The P25-S509 has a full-sized 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys and two-button touchpad.
Sound and Graphics
The P25-S509 produces crisp video playback and good 3-D performance for gaming, thanks to its 32 MB DDR NVIDIA GeForce4 FX Go5200 video/graphics card. With 32 MB of dedicated video RAM, the P25-S509 will perform well with multimedia applications and will do OK with gaming software. The 17-inch XGA TFT active matrix display has a native resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels (with support for 16 million colors).

The Realtek ALC202 sound card (18-bit, full duplex, AC'97 standard) is integrated into the computers main board. The P25-S509 features built-in Harman Kardon speakers, and it has headphone, microphone, and line-in audio jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a wide range of connectivity options with the P25-S509, including two PC card slots (with support for two Type II or one Type III card) and the following external connections:

  • 4 USB 2.0 ports for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 in front and 1 in back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 infrared ports
  • 1 RGB monitor port
  • 1 TV-out (S-Video)
  • Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot

It also has an an integrated 802.11g wireless LAN (which is compatible with the more widespread 802.11b and offers faster data transmission rates), integrated 56K modem (V.92), and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The P25-S509 comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Norton Antivirus 2003 (with 90 days of complimentary live updates), Adobe Acrobat Reader, AOL (with three-month trial membership), Quicken 2003, InterVideo WinDVD SE (for playing DVD movies), and DragÕn Drop CD+DVD software.

Dimensions and Weight
A little heavier than similarly priced notebooks, the P25-S509 weighs 9.9 pounds and measures 16.4 x 11.5 x 1.8 (L x W x H).

Power
The included 12-cell rechargeable lithium-ion battery weighs 1.4 pounds and has an approximate 2-hour battery life (during normal use). It also comes with a 120W AC adapter.

What's in the Box
This package includes the Toshiba Satellite P25-S509 notebook PC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery, AC adapter, and operating instructions.

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The ideal replacement for a desktop machine.
I absolutley love this computer. When my old Toshiba 4015 CDT developed some hardware problems I decided to bite the bullet and get a new machine. After reading numerous reviews and articles I narrowed my manufacturer choices to Sony and Toshiba. This is a rugged, large for a laptop, fast and great looking machine. The screen is truly spectacular and the performance surpases all but the fastest most expensive desktops. I use the computer primarily for my job as a real estate broker in CT. As I write this review I am in FL on vacation. Taking this 9 plus pound unit on the AMTRAK sleeper was not really any more of a problem than my old, significantly smaller laptop. With all the usb ports, using the computer to input photos while on vacation is a snap. This is not a cheap computer, but worth every penny. If extreme portability is your primary concern, it is probably a little too large for you. On the other hand, if you only need a portable machine with uncompromising performance then I highly suggest you consider this computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fast, FULL of features, consumer desktop replacement.
This laptop is big, 17" XGA screen. Bright and nice. Its kinda heavy if you want to carry it around (10punds) If you need a laptop to carry around then buy a 15" or a Centrino powered notebook.

The hardrive has only 5200rpm so this is the only thing I don't like about this laptop. I whish it was 7200rpm.

Battery does not last so long, but where would you go with this big and heavy laptop without a DC or AC adapter? So this not an issue for me.

I really like the power on button, turn it on and it turns red, then when windows boots up it turns blue, on standby mode it flashes slowly... it's beautiful!!

I only wish it weight less, kinda like the powerbook.

Yeah, this machine is fast, I currently have a Dual Athlon MP 1800+ as my desktop, at work I have a Pentium 4 HT 800 FSB at 2.4mhz and this Toshiba laptop can put up a nice fight between them. Of course when rendering, the dual athlon MP wins.

All the menus just "pop up" instantly, programs open up fastly. Boots up and turns of fastly. Windows XP PRo, great!

For all the specifications on this laptop just click on the link TECHNICAL DATA on the left side on this page.

1-0 out of 5 stars Biggest POS In the PC World
I've gone through 2 in 6 months. Optical drive failed on both. The good thing is is that the first one was swapped on the spot. Bad new is that the second will be gone for 4 weeks while they "fix it". Look elswhere....

5-0 out of 5 stars No muy portátil, pero realmente poderosa

5-0 out of 5 stars Cmon
Cmon... If you need any better than this in a laptop, you're crazy! This fits the needs, and it's enough to go on. Although it's pretty expensive, it's reasonable for all of these full upgrades on a laptop. It has more things than it does on my computer right now! Plus mobility. That's just amazing. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Blending the functionality of today's top notebooks with the convenience of pen-based input, Toshiba's Portégé 3505 Tablet PC delivers a possible glimpse into the future of mobile computers. Versatile and extremely compact but not overly powerful when compared to standard portables, the Portégé 3505 is a great fit for those who are handier with a pen than a keyboard and value a truly petite profile.

The unit is most at home when used to enter, store and share notes and concepts that might otherwise be kept in handwritten format. In fact, measuring just 11.6 by 9.2 by 1.2 inches and tipping the scales at a scant 4.1 pounds, the Portégé 3505 is as comfortably portable as a conventional paper-based notepad. Users input data in one of two ways--either by sketching directly on the swiveling, double-duty 12.1-inch poly-silicon TFT color LCD (maximum resolution 1024x768) or via an 84-key keyboard.

Though the Portégé 3505 is not as powerful as a comparably priced notebook, it is faster than many competing tablets and is the most full-featured tablet in the current Toshiba lineup. Featuring a 1.33 GHz Intel Pentium III processor-M with enhanced SpeedStep technology for improved battery life, a generous allotment of 512 MB SDRAM memory (expandable to 1024 MB) and a Trident CyberALLADIN-T graphics controller with 16 MB external memory, the unit will easily handle most day-to-day mobile computing tasks and many 3-D apps too. Serious gamers or 3-D artisans should look elsewhere.

Connectivity amenities include an RJ-45 LAN port for network and online access, an RJ-11 modem port for low-speed e-communication, and integrated Wi-Fi compliant wireless LAN support.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two Thumbs Up on the Portege 3505
This notebook is great! I've had it for about 3 months now and I haven't had any problems to date (knock on wood). From my perspective... here are the advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages
- Excellent design
- It reads 99% of my sloppy writing and you can save note in your own handwriting or convert them to text
- Fast CPU for a tablet pc
- Large hard drive
- USB 2.0 ports
- Weighs 4 pounds
- Compact Flash and Secure Digital slots
- Equipped with DVD-Rom (this is not available on the 3500 model)

Disadvantages
- It's a little slow compared to my Dell Dimension 8200, but what do you expect, it's a notebook
- Battery life
- External DVD-Rom
- Very little software provided... but this was an easy one to surpass...

Other Notes:
The first time I called tech support they were terrible. I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. The second time I called in I asked to speak with Tier 2 support and they were perfect! So just call up and ask to be bumped up from the stump answering the phone. BTW, the issue I had was with the DVD-Rom installation. It wasn't a big deal...

...P>In summary, this is an excellent notebook at a reasonable price. It's easy to use and it is the best in its class (at time of posting)! Be a good consumer and shop around before you pick one up.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Hot" tablet/notepad
The portege is an amazing machine. I've been looking to do away with notepads and pens during University lecture note-taking, and the portege has worked very well. The heat is not too much of a problem when you are running on a power saving mode. If you run on a high-energy mode, the fan vent will heat up a good amount, with the power plugged in near this vent also does increase the heat. It doesn't get to the point where it will burn your hand, just heats it up a bit.

The video's card failure is not an issue unless you want to run graphic intensive video games, I've been able to run a number of "light" games without too much of a slow down. Thanks to the 516 RAM things are very speedy. Hand writing software is very good, it takes only a few days to train yourself what horrible chicken-scratch will and will not be accepted.

The keyboard/pad scores high marks, being very intuitive keyboard layout.

You're paying for the tablet switch back function, not the power. But as far as changeable tablets, or just tablets, the protege has great power and has become a desktop replacement for myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great tablet PC
Tablet PC has been out almost a year now and is slowly gaining momentum in the corporate world. For the average consumer, though, I think it's still way over-priced and under-equipped in terms of software. In short, the Tablet PC platform is still largely a vertical market product.

That said, having a Tablet PC does give the gadget freak a few cool things to enjoy. For example, scratch on a pad to your heart's full content. Not enough? How about watching a DVD movie at any angle you wish? Still want more? You can lie on your stomach and surf the web, you geek!

The Protege 3505 is arguably the sleekest and strongest TPC on the market right now. It's a hybrid model with a keyboard which turns it into a notebook. Compared to the lower-rung 3500 model, the 3505 has more memory (512 vs. 256) and also comes with an external DVD drive. It has wi-fi built-in (along with Ethernet and IR), and depending on the specific configuration, you can opt for built-in Bluetooth as well.

Performance is solid from the P3-M processor. You should know that the TPC version of Windows XP is optimized for the processors so you actually get a lot of performance at "low" clock speeds. ("Low" compared to desktop P4s; if you compare with Power PC G3 or G4's, these are still "fast".) I certainly have no problem playing MP3s in the background while running a few Excel Solver analyses; the OS remains totally responsive.

Battery life is average for TPCs, but weight is where Toshiba can improve. On the other hand, this is an affordable TPC, so you have to ask yourself which of the two (weight vs. price) is more important to you. Fujitsu's Tablet PCs are better built and only slightly less sleek, but their battery life is not as good as Toshiba while costing more. Sorry, still no perfect TPC yet.

Should you get your Amazon Visa card out and order one right now? I'd say no. There isn't much software included, and the novelty factor wears off quickly, plus 4.1 pounds (not counting the external DVD) is a lot to carry. On the other hand, if your company pays for it, it's another story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not disappointed
I'd been eyeing the Toshiba convertible tablets for almost a year, and finally picked up the courage to overrule my wife and buy one. (I'm still dealing with her wrath, which was soothed by a new piece of jewelery.)

I like this design far and above any other, because of the flexibility. While it weighs more than most tablets, due to the added built in electronics of the keyboard, I don't have to fumble with extra accessories. That is except for the external DVD/CD-RW.

The battery life is good, with the DVD attached and running, I'm getting just over 2 1/2 hours, but without it attached over 3 hours. The lesson here is you never get what the manufacturer states (3 1/2 hours), unless your screen is nearly dark. But it beats my old laptop, which was giving me barely 90 minutes while watching DVD movies.

The Zinio reader is an awesome concept. I downloaded the free copies of one of the monthly computer gamers magazines that was offered, and was suprised at how well it was working. I usually buy a couple of the computer magazines from the airport newsstand when travelling, but now can buy them online and read them on the tablet. What's even better is that I can also read the same magazines on the desktop too.

A helpful tip would be for you to obtain a Virtual CD emulator, so that you can cache copies of your most critical "road" CDs (games) which require the physical CD to run the software. I use GameDrive, and I haven't had any problems using it. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT!
When my parents bought me the satellite for my 17th birthday i was so excited since it was my first personal notebook. Now i am 19 and have suffered the last two years with this peice of junk. I don't even know where to start...first it randomly shuts down for no apparent reason. It constantly locks up when using the internet, my screen freaks out randomly at least a couple times a year to the point where it literally wont show an image, the speakers suck, it's slow as hell and i can't even remember everything else that is wrong with it.
On top of all of this Toshiba itself sucks in the customer service department. My father is now on their "beware of customer" list because he continually calls when the damn thing breaks down and ends up getting people who don't speak english and don't understand anything he is trying to explain. I promise you he and I are both fully capable of explaining a problem. Toshiba's solution has been multiple times to send the computer in for fixing - which i have done at least four times over the last two years.
- One example of Toshiba's poor service: I sent the computer in to fix a dimming screen and on their service sheet, i boldy stated NO to refragmenting becuase of all the saved work i had on it. Well they refragmented it, lost all my work over the last year, and on top of it as my luck would turn the back up CD i had didnt work. Though the CD part was my mistake, i was devestated considering Toshiba shouldn't have lost the work in the first place.
The other reason i hate this thing is that being a college freshmen i have to rely entirely on my computer. SO low and behold this thing decides not to show images on my screen two weeks before my final exams. I was forced to box it up and send it to a repair shop ASAP, in which the computer wasn't returned to me for over a week.
Thanks to Toshiba, i am forever turned off of Toshiba computers. i will never in my ENTIRE LIFE purchase a product from their company and i suggest to those reading this that they do the same. On top of it i am worried that Toshiba has completely turned me away from PCs which i have so dilegently used the last few years...looks like Apple has a new customer. THANK YOU TOSHIBA!

1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of junk
I kick myself every time I try to use this worthless piece of frustration. I hate it. It shuts down all the time. The sound card doesn't work. Half the time, when it boots up, the screen is black. Keep rebooting, and eventually, it will display and image. I hate it. I hate Toshiba products. I will never ever buy another one. And, of course, all this started immediately after it was out of warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Manufactured with known defect
It seems that toshiba manufactured these machines with a known defect in which the CPU needs to be throttled back in order to keep the laptop from shutting down due to over heating. The cause of this issue is that Toshiba used a desktop CPU (Intel Pentium III) instead of a mobile CPU in these laptops. Toshiba's solution to the problem is a BIOS update which effectively throttles back the clock speed of the CPU and causes some issues with DVD playback. This defect is also present in the satellite 5505 series laptops.

1-0 out of 5 stars BIOS is NOT the problem
Hey all- I have been following the class-action suit against Toshiba RE: random shut-offs and wanted to correct something that another reviewer asserted. In the "one bad apple..." review, the reviewer asserts that the BIOS fixes offered by Toshiba will correct this problem. This is a truth wrapped in falsehood. The BIOS fix WILL prevent this problem from occuring, but it is because it prevents your computer from running at its advertised speed. To say this is a solution is insane. All it suggests is that you should have bought a cheaper, slower computer to begin with. Do NOT confuse the BIOS fix as a real fix. Do not buy this computer. Also, do not buy a Satellite 5005-series or 1900-series. Same deal. Viva le lawsuit!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a note...
I am one of many with the famous Toshiba laptop overheat-and-shut-down problems. I just wanted to point out- since someone dismissed this problem as being easily correctible- it is NOT. updating BIOS was a clever trick by Toshiba to deflect the problem- not fix it. The BIOS fix merely SLOWS your computer down so that the processer produces less heat. However, it means that the user wasted a lot of money on a fast chip they cannot use. do not buy this computer (or the 1900 series) and expect to run it at the speed you were promised. Hell it may not run at all. Mine shuts down when i load some acrobat files, use Word, burn Cds, etc. i'm furious! right now, as I type, I have TWO ice packs on this piece of plastic and yet it has already shut-off twice in the last hour. I'm not kidding. this is not a whiny-- why isn't my computer perfect?-- complaint. I cannot use many Cd-roms, I cannot watch dvds AT ALL (meaning $ wasted on that drive), I cannot watch streaming video. I cannot even write a term paper without expecting a shut-off or two. No joke. ... Read more

57. Toshiba Satellite M20-S257 (PSM20U-00F9Y7) Notebook (1.30-GHz Pentium-M (Centrino))

Asin: B00009PUM7
Catlog: Personal Computer

Amazon.com Product Description

Featuring Intel's Centrino technology, which among other benefits incorporates embedded wireless support, reduced battery consumption, and a hearty 1 MB of CPU Level 2 cache for enhanced performance and multitasking, Toshiba's new Satellite M20-S257 Notebook is versatile, moderately powerful and packed with perks--all this at a palatable price point.

At the heart of the Satellite M20-S257 is a 1.3 GHz Intel Pentium M CPU. Toshiba has augmented this capable yet cost-effective processor with 256 of PC2100 DDR memory and an integrated Intel 855GM graphics controller with shared (not dedicated) video memory. Not the best setup for demanding business or graphic applications or 3-D games, the unit is nevertheless powerful enough for most day-to-day remote and mobile computing tasks.

Featuring a 30 GB hard disk, the Satellite M20-S257 offers adequate permanent storage space for most users but not enough for avid collectors of video footage or MP3s. The system's removable DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive allows you to archive data, burn and play audio CDs and watch the latest movies, but does not permit DVD writing.

At 12.4 by 10.8 by 1.5 inches and 6 pounds, the Satellite M20-S257 is comfortably petite. Inside, you'll find desirable amenities such as a full-size 85-key keyboard with HotKey function, an AccuPoint II pointing device with scroll function, and a 14.1-inch TFT active-matrix display screen capable of 1024 by 768 resolution. Other goodies include two high-speed USB 2.0 ports for external peripherals, integrated stereo speakers, a full duplex sound card that supports 3-D sound and two memory slots (both of which may be occupied).

Connectivity options include integrated 802.11b Intel PRO/Wireless, a 10/100 Ethernet LAN port, and a low-speed 56K modem. Battery life is estimated at 3:42 with one battery and 6:48 with two. To help you get started, Microsoft Windows XP Pro is pre-installed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hey, it's a TOSHIBA!
I wouldn't buy a laptop from anybody else, have always had a great experience with them.

Personally I prefer a Toshiba Tecra S1, it has 32MB of dedicated video memory on a Radeon ATI card whereas this one has shared video memeory, and tons of different connections and expandability options.

But still way better than some crappy HP or Compaq or Sony, my IT friends all report that those have the most repairs by far.

Hint: buy extra memory from Dell, it's a snap to install yourself and will save you $$$. ... Read more
