Amazon.com Product Description The Presario S5300nx Desktop is driven by a snappy Intel Pentium 4 processor operating at 2.5 GHz. Compaq has added enough RAM memory for most single task and multitask situations - 512 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) - and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. Certainly the video chipset is the weak link here, and as such the system will need a video card upgrade for advanced 3-D applications. To store and transfer your data and give you plenty of room for a full library of multimedia files, the Presario S5300nx Desktop is equipped with a massive 120 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive that supports CD burning and CD and DVD playing, but no DVD writing. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally reserved for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to customize your desktop setup from the many options available today. Reviews (2)
Normally, I would have given it 4 stars, but with all the power it has, the inability to do even a fair job at handling graphics that most older computers can, is an unforgivable oversight.
STRENGTHS: *Combination of DVD and CD-RW drives - A Tower which features only one drive (i.e. the RW drive) defeats the purpose of the RW drive. With dual drives, you can now burn much faster. * Appearance - Mostly black with a gray front panel it is a machine (a la Dell) that looks like it means business. * Front side USB 2.0 - The Presario features 2 Front side USB 2.0 prots as well as two in the rear. Front Side USB ports make it much more conevient to plug in Jump Drives and other transient USB devieces. In addition, there is a convenient pull down access panel to hide the USB ports when not in use. * Pentium 2.5 Ghz - The 2.5 Pentium 4 provides more than enough juice to power any applications you can throw at it. * 120 GB Hard Drive =- Provides plenty of storage space for files. * Quality keyboard - Finally... a name brand computer which features a quality, non-throwaway keyboard. * 3 1/2 disk drive - Yup, it's almost a relic... but not quite and the Presario has it. * Quiet running - The Presario runs quiet. * On-board Intel extreme Graphics - The on-board intel extreme graphics can handle the very latest in graphics requirements for todays games. *Quality motherboard - Many name brand computerscome with cheap motherboards. The Presario however, features the ASUS mother board. WEAKNESSES: * No AGP expansions slot - There is no upwards expansion of the graphics capabilities of the Presario. * Minimum expansion slots - Again, provides minimum opporuntity for expansion of the Presario which limits its upgrade potential. * Clumsy tower design - It takes some effort to open the tower in order to upgrade the machine. In addition to removing the side panel, one must also remove the front panel. * Limited pre-packaged software - You get Windows XP... and not much else. All in all, the S5300NX is a complete machine, but it better be since there is not much room for upgrades. ... Read more

The OS is Windows XP Home Edition, with a 90-day trial version of MS Works 7.0. This means that after the 90 day period, you have go out and buy a copy of Microsoft Office. Compaq's decision to load "trial version" software is pure idiocy! After the trial period is over, you're totally helpless, and can't even save a document. A major inconvenience to say the least. The fact that trial software is loaded should be prominently disclosed to all buyers before they purchase. You'll notice that it this is not mentioned in most descriptions of the system. The processor is an AMD Athlon XP 3000+, with a listed speed of 2.167 GHz. Not the fastest, but adequate for most routine applications, including a program like Photoshop 7.0. Basic RAM provided is 512MB, upgradeable to 2G. The large capacity 160GB hard drive is a plus, and most users won't have to worry about running out of space for a while. The drive is partitioned, with essential files located on a separate directory with restricted access to help prevent accidental deletion of files. The unit has a CD/DVD burner, CD ROM drive, and floppy disk drive. The DVD drive functions with Record Now software. The software available to view DVD's are Windows Media Player, and WinDVD. The computer has an abundance or ports, with 8 USB 2.0 (two on the front face), two firewire, one parallel, and one Ethernet. Internal modem is a basic 56K. Another major drawback to this system concerns game play. The video and audio cards support some games, but not most new high end games. Many games do not install properly and cannot be played on this system. Other games load and can be played initially, but crash at specific points such as level changes. Apparently the stock components must be upgraded in order to accommodate these games. Anyone seeking processor intensive gameplay should not get this system. Those few consumers who are not at all interested in gaming, word processing or writing documents may find this a suitable purchase. Buyers should be prepared to either buy MS Office 2003 separately, or load in an older version of the software. Those interested in playing games are better off getting something that doesn't need to be upgraded. With this castrated system, Compaq definitely does not deliver a winner.

First off it has completely standard hardware and the case is among the simplest to access. The interior is well organized and cleanly laid out. All the expansions slots are easy to use and the case can be entered without even a screwdriver. This is a major change for Compaq. A large number of their previous systems had little modifications to the ATX form that made hardware changes difficult for the end user. The second reason is that the included hardware has a great price to power ratio. Nothing in it is unworkable or even truly bargain basement in quality. The included DVD writer truly closed the deal for me. Also of note is the software bundle. It includes a few standard applications and some media management software. Nothing to special it would seem. And that to is a plus as Compaq used to install a plague of customized software that caused endless issues for me in the past. Small bits of custom software remain but are now easily uninstalled or disabled. The systems includes every port needed for easy device connection except a standard joystick connector. This isn't much of a fault in this age of USB devices. For the devoted non-Microsoft crowd I can proudly say that after a little bit of effort I managed to resize the NTFS partition on the installed 160 gig hard drive. This system now gladly dual boots mandrake Linux 9.2 without any issues. I would suggest only two affordable changes depending on your needs. One is if you are going to do any gaming add a AGP video card. The integrated savage video will serve the email and video watching crowd well. But gaming seems to be very limited on it. The addition of a left over Geforce 5200 turned my system into a acceptable games station . Also the on-board audio is good but not great. Add a SoundBlaster live value if you have one laying around its easy and well worth it. One last design feature to mention is the fact that it has front ports for most any device. This truly comes in handy for those who love their USB cameras and joysticks. As well as any devotees of 1394 fire wire and the various flash memory card standards. It even includes microphone and headphone jacks.

Amazon.com Product Description From the ground up, the 6024US is built to impress. The unit is driven by a muscular 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 32 KB of Level 1 pipeline burst cache, 256 KB of Level 2 pipeline burst cache and a 400 MHz system bus speed. Graphic processing is handled by a robust 64 MB nVidia GeForce2 MX200, and system memory is preconfigured at a massive 512 MB of 266 MHz DDR DRAM (expandable to 1 full gigabyte). Make no mistake--this is a seriously powerful machine for seriously demanding users. Yet for all its hot-rod speed, the 6024US is also plenty roomy. Compaq has included a massive 80 GB hard drive for long-term storage and program installs, and a 3.5-inch diskette drive for smaller files and quick backups. It has installed a superfast 24-speed (write) CD-RW drive to make quick work of any data or audio recording, and a 16-speed DVD drive for error-free viewing of your favorite movies. And if you ever do want to add another drive, the unit's spare expansion bay is ready to accommodate. The 6024US is convenient, too. Its 23.8-pound enclosure features a variety of input and output connections, including four USB ports, a parallel and serial port, line-in and line-out audio ports, a microphone-in jack and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for LAN connectivity and high-speed Internet browsing. Its 56K modem delivers low-speed Internet and e-mail support for those who prefer to surf at a more leisurely pace, and its keyboard offers a number of one-touch multimedia, e-mail, and Web buttons to help streamline day-to-day computing tasks. Installed software includes the Home Edition of the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Works 6.0, Quicken Financial Center/Quicken New User Edition and Intervideo's WinDVD movie player. Certainly not for computer users on a budget or those who'd rather not supply a separate monitor and speaker system, the Compaq Presario is nevertheless an extremely capable machine for virtually any 2-D and 3-D application.

It has a built in DVD-RW (a Pioneer A04--good choice). You'll be hard-pressed to find a machine with similar specs including a DVD-RW at this price (as of August 2002). It also has a powerful processor for encoding video quickly. It has conveniently placed IEEE1394 and USB1.1 ports up front so you can hook up your camcorder so easily. I like the mid-size box, and find the silver/black look appealing. I really like the clean front for the optical drives and connectors (no goofy doors like HP/Sony/etc.) It even comes with a reinstall disk (unlike HP labelled products). Even the keyboard is respectable. The graphic chip set with shared memory helps keep the price reasonable and if you really need high-end game graphics, you can add a graphics board easily enough. For video editing and everything I ever do, the graphics are fully adequate. Drawbacks: There is only a single open mounting slot for an additional drive inside. I have placed an additional drive just laying inside. Also, the machine includes some persistant Compaq shopping software that takes a couple steps to disable. Also of note. The PC comes with no speakers. This is not convenient but at least lets you get just the speakers you want since most included speakers are usually disappointing anyway. Overall, this is a lovely machine for video work and general use. I'm very pleased with mine after a month churning out videos and homemade DVDs.
