For the 5423US, Compaq matches this capable Intel processor with more thanenough high-end memory to operate any program currently available and handlemost any conceivable level of multitasking. With 512 MB of RAM at your disposal,it may be years until you even need to even contemplate upgrading to the onefull gigabyte the system supports.

With the 5423US, data storage, movement, and backup should never be a problem. Its monstrous 80 GB UltraDMA hard drive offers oodles of space for even the mostsoftware-intensive workplace or gaming environment. Its 16x CD-RW drive permitsfast burning of audio and data backup or data transferal CDs. And if you ever do want to add another drive, the unit's two spareexpansion bays are ready to accommodate.

The 5423US is packed with a variety of tools to enhance day-to-day computing. I bought this pc 2/02. After 4 mos, started slowing. 1) By 8/02 it totally crashed. Lost all data. Recovery CD didn't work. Defective chip replaced. 2)12/02 crashed again. Recovery CD failed. Lost all data. Defective hard-drive replaceed. 3)4/02 totally crashed again. Boot disk unable to boot. Recovery program I'd installed to guard against another failure said it couldn't recognize hard-drive. Problems are similar to when chip failed, so I'm assuming it's the chip again. Rather than fix it again...Bought a new pc, new brand. Avoid Compaq like the plague. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Gateway and Dell are worth it
I hate to say it, but Gateway and Dell are worth the extra money. Even with their pain in the neck propriety parts.

I've had my Presario for a year (warranty ran out Monday). It's sluggish, locks up, shows umteen errors and constantly shuts down programs.

There is an error message for Nvida graphics card that keeps telling me to upgrade. The computer does not come with Nvida graphics card. After 40 minutes on hold trying to get help from Compaq.......they tell me that it is a SOFTWARE ISSUE.

I hate to spend the extra $300 but we had our Gateway for 5 years with minimal trouble and my mom's had Dell happily for a couple years.

This computer is going to the kids!

4-0 out of 5 stars A worthy buy
Now, just to start off. This computer wasn't for me. I already have a few computers better then this one that i built myself. However, my cousins (ages 8/12/13/4) needed to learn on a good computer. And i wanted them to use a company made computer. Since this is the computer ive seen all the local schools buying. I decided to check it out. It was a well worth buying. They easily handled it. The only problem was sometimes when the computer crashes (which is rarely). I'll restart it and it says my password is incorrect. However i reboot and it runs fine. The sixty gigabytes let my cousins install anything they wan't on these. I bought 2. I also bought a compaq laptop for the older of the four since he travels alot. He enjoys it. This compaq computer, allows almsot any installation. It definitly defeats my cousin's old computers i got them from a auction which ran at 7gb and 500mHZ. They really learn from these machines. It is a true buy to old/new users alike. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

One of the most affordable computers in the entire Compaq roster, the Presario S4100nx Desktop PC is a perfect low-cost solution for light home and home office applications. Serious gamers and businesspeople should look elsewhere, but for word processing, homework, Internet surfing and the occasional DVD movie, the Presario S4100nx is a wise and fiscally sensible choice.

Sporting a 2.50 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 256 MB PC2100 DRR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario S4100nx delivers good value but is far removed from Compaq’s top-of-the-line Presario 8000T series. To store and transfer your data, Compaq has equipped the unit with a surprisingly large 80 GB hard drive (more than enough space for most users), a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing.

The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, and a whopping half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has also enclosed a convenient Presario Internet keyboard and standard non-scrolling Presario mouse, but has not equipped the unit with a viewing monitor, wireless networking, or a FireWire port (a common data link with external devices such as digital camcorders).

The impressive bundled software package features Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Money 2003, Intuit Quicken Financial Center, and several audio-video utilities. Monitor and speakers are sold separately. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

You'll be able to power through a variety of tasks and entertainment with the Compaq Presario S5400NX desktop PC. It's a highly affordable choice for small businesses, home offices, and college students with a yen for multimedia. Featuring a fast Hyper-Threaded 2.60 GHz Pentium 4 processor, the S5400NX also offers 512 MB RAM, a DVD/CD writer combo for burning your home digital video movies and favorite songs to disc, and a host of connectivity options.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The massive 120 GB Ultra DMA hard drive offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos, and MP3 collection.
  • Processor: The 2.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) offers more than enough power for everyday computing tasks as well as database and multimedia applications (from gaming to digital audio and video).
  • Memory: The S5400NX comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (2 x 256 MB DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 1 GB. It also has an L2 cache of 512 KB.
  • CD/DVD Drive: It is equipped with a combo drive that is capable of reading and writing of both DVDs and CDs (4x DVD+R, 2.4x DVD+RW, 8x DVD-ROM, 16x CDR, 10x CDRW, 40x CD-ROM). It uses the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The S5400NX comes with the Presario Internet keyboard and a scrolling mouse with PS/2 connection.
Sound and Graphics
The S5400NX features an integrated AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) sound card that is built into the computer's main board. The video/graphics card--Intel Extreme Graphics 2--is also integrated with up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for basic needs, but it will need a better video/graphics card for professional design and graphics usage.

This computer does not include a monitor.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
You get a wide range of connectivity options with the S5400NX, including three PCI expansion slots (two available), one AGP (accelerated graphics port) slot and the following external ports:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports (2 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs

It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.92) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The S5400NX comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Microsoft Money 2003, and Microsoft Encarta Online Encyclopedia Deluxe (with one-year trial subscription). It also comes with Intuit Quicken Financial Center, Norton Antivirus 2003 and Personal Firewall (with 60 days of complimentary live updates), Adobe Acrobat Reader and Photoshop Album, RecordNow (for creating your own music or data CDs), MusicMatch Jukebox (with 100 MP3 songs from EMusic.com), Arcsoft ShowBiz DVD (for editing digital video), RealOne Player, and , ). It also includes three months of AOL dial-up service.

Dimensions and Weight
It measures 14.6 x 6.9 x 16.6 (W x D x H) and weighs 35 pounds (packaged).

What's in the Box
This package includes the Compaq Presario S5400NX desktop PC, Presario Internet keyboard, PS/2 scroller mouse, power cord, phone cord, and operating instructions. It is backed by a one-year limited warranty.

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars My first impressions....
Recently bought S5400NX. The spec seemed amazing from price-performance.

Here is my opinion:
[1] DVD Full Screen playback - excellent. Flawless.
[2] DVD burning: Failed many times with DvdToCopy. Worked fine with Arcsoft's ShowBiz (shipped), Which is again very minimal version.
[3] Recovery CD's: Doesn't ship on a different CD. Uses disk partition. You can copy it to a DVD, But only once lifetime.
[4] Mouse freeze: When you install any software, the cpu shows 100% and the mouse freezes. Takes sometime for mouse release.
[5] CDROM Noise: access to CDROM makes noise.
[6] The above two points might be because of the ASUS technology(mother board and CDROM drives).
[7] Support: International support center. Its hard to understand them. I would say chaos. Be prepared to give your contact info, even for product enquiry. Don't forget to remind that you aren't their client for product enquiry.

If you can afford few bucks more:
[1]buy one with Intel Motherboard.
[2]buy one with DVD+/-RW support. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

There was a time not so very long ago that a desktop computer in this price range was incapable of anything other than absolute basic tasks. But with the new Presario SR1010NX Desktop PC, Compaq proves those days are over. Though it won't suit a demanding business environment or dedicated gaming studio, the Presario SR1010NX will fit right in to most home, home office or school dorm environments.

Driven by a cost-efficient Intel Celeron processor running at 2.7 GHz, a minimal alloent of 256 MB main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video controller with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario SR1010NX is definitely not a world-class speed machine or a 3-D powerhouse. However, for basic computer duties such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic communication and homework, it is more than adequate. Those who frequently multitask will need to double the system's memory, and anyone who stores large libraries of files will want to upgrade the enclosed hard disk, which at just 40 GB is certainly smallish.

Compaq has installed a 3.5-inch diskette drive for small backups and older applications and a CD-RW optical drive through which you can load applications, play audio CDs and backup important data. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD playing or writing. Nor does it include an IEEE 1394 FireWire" port (normally used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), though it does feature a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and gadgets such as USB-capable digital cameras and printers.

Other desirable amenities include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication, a low-speed dial-up 56K modem, a Compaq keyboard and scrolling Compaq mouse, and two free PCI slots for adding devices such as high-powered video and audio cards and additional connections. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to utilize your current monitor or select from the many alternatives currently available. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Compaq's Presario S5200NX Desktop PC is intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor. The system isn't particularly game-friendly, nor does it sport such luxuries as DVD burning or a FireWire port for high-speed interaction with digital camcorders. Yet its affordable price point, large hard disk and satisfactory power section make it a good low-cost alternative for many home and home office applications.

The Presario S5200nx Desktop is driven by a price-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.7 GHz –- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added a satisfactory allotment of 512 MB DRR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1 GB) and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. As such, the system is not recommended for advanced 3-D graphics or heavy-duty business use.

To store and transfer your data, the Presario S5200nx Desktop is equipped with a surprisingly accommodating 120 GB hard disk (perfect for storing oodles of MP3s), a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, and a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to choose from the many options available today. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't do it!!!
I recently decided to upgrade from my Compaq Presario 400Mhz I bought a good 5 years ago. Thinking the 2.7 GHz and 512MB (plus an extra 256MB) would be great. I am totally disappointed!!

The Compaq Presario S5200NX is by far a waste of money. It is slower than you can imagine and the technical service from Compaq/HP is ZERO !

I am without a doubt totally disappointed, my only option at this point is to either purchase a new processor and see if that speeds it up or buy another computer. Since I have only had this for a couple months neither choice truely appeals to me.

If in the market for a new computer...DON'T BUY A COMPAQ PRESARIO S5200NX !!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Basic Computer
This is a good basic computer. The price is right for 120GB and 512RAM. This is a big step up from my Windows Me Emachines. I love it up to this point.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great computer, easy setup
This replaces my 333cs E-tower, and it's a multi-tasking dream...RPG Games windowed with spreadsheets and music playing.....I'm one happy camper ... Read more

  • Processor: A 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) powers the S6700NX, which offers more than enough speed for gaming and multimedia creation. It also has an 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 1 MB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The S6700NX comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (2 x 256 MB DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users--with a maximum memory expansion up to 4 GB (4 x 1 GB).

This package contains the Compaq Presario S6700NX desktop PC, power cable, keyboard, and mouse. It is backed by a limited warranty for parts and labor for one year from date of purchase.

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

It features a fast CD burner and a separate DVD+RW writer, fast 64-bit 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon 3200+ processor, extra-large 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and loads of connectivity options. The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The massive 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos, and MP3 collection.
  • Processor: The S6900NX is powered by AMD's Athlon 64 3200+ processor (comparable to Intel's 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 processor), which is suited for such high-performance tasks as 3-D PC games and professional-quality image and video editing. Amazon Product Description

The Basics:
If you're the type who relishes or requires state-of-the-art computer technology, the Presario 6400NX Desktop PC is definitely not the ideal Compaq for you. Certainly you'll need to perform substantial upgrades to components such as its memory and graphics controller if you plan to go beyond basic tasks such as word processing, home finances or email correspondence. Yet the affordable, no-frills Presario 6400NX is otherwise a good bet for budget-minded individuals needing a very cost-effective entry-level workhorse for home, school or light business duty.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some are equipped with high-end CPU's suitable for any software currently on the market, while others are fast enough only for basic duties. Powered by an affordable yet powerful 1.53 GHz AMD Athlon XP 1800+ processor with Quantispeed architecture, the Presario 6400NX simply does not sport the horsepower needed for some of today's most popular but demanding virtual activities. But for students or home users on tight budgets who don't expect to be running high-end business applications, games, and the like, it should suffice nicely.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Presario 6400NX is equipped with today's absolute minimum recommended amount of memory, 128 MB. This allotment will theoretically allow you to run Microsoft's Windows XP operating system, but is not sufficient for multitasking or complex applications. Fortunately, the system does permit upgrades to a full 1 GB.

Video:
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller), the finest of which will include their own "dedicated" built-in video memory rather than "sharing" portions of the system's valuable main memory. For the Presario 6400NX, Compaq has installed a ProSavageDDR KM266 graphics chipset with 32 MB of shared memory. This configuration will not handle advanced graphic applications such as 3D games or 3D animation without first being upgraded. Still, general 2D applications should pose little problem.

Display:
The Presario 6400NX does not ship with a display, thus allowing you to utilize your current monitor or custom select a model from the many choices available today.

Hard Disk:
At 40 GB, the integrated hard drive is too small to store a library of space-gobbling games or multimedia files. But that's okay, because this PC isn't really cut out for that sort of stuff anyway. For text files, emails and the like, the smallish hard drive is adequate.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play CDs. DVD playing and burning is not supported.

Audio:
The unit is equipped with an entry-level integrated audio chip. Speakers are purchased separately.

Keyboard and Controls:
Compaq will enclose a standard PS/2 Presario keyboard and a two-button mouse with convenient scroll wheel.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The Presario 6400NX features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem, a 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet connection, and a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. A FireWire port (for quick interaction with external devices such as digital camcorders) is not enclosed.

Operating System and Software:
Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system heads up a software bundle that also features Microsoft's Money 2002 Standard, Intuit Quicken Financial Center including Quicken New Users Edition 2003, and Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity package.

4-0 out of 5 stars Slow At First!
First off this computer is very very slow at first. We bought it about one month after it came out.It comes with 128MB of ram which I don't know why they didn't add more since Windows XP at the very least needs 256Mb's.I've added 1GB of ram which makes a tremendous difference to this computer. The 32MB integrated graphic chip will be a horrible experience if you want to play 3-D games.Good thing it has an AGP slot to put in a video card. I've put in a ATI Radeon 9000pro 128MB card which works fine for me.Also the 40GB 5,400rpm Hard Drive is a little slow and will get eaten up fast if you work with multimedia.Which is fine cause you could get another one but then you find yourself doing alot of upgrades for this machine!Anyways I would say that if your not going to upgrade 2-3 hundred dollars worth then invest your money into something better then this system.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice computer at a great price
I purchased a Presarrio Athlon 1600+ this summer and was impressed by its speed so I when I saw this one I recommended it to a friend. Computer was easy to set up. Paired it up with roadrunner high speed internet access and web surfing is super fast. Compaq seems to have worked out the kinks with java windows. Compaq has also added some nice desktop themes. Set up was easy without any calls to technical support. The only disappointment was that it came with a black keyboard with grey keys instead of the silver internet ready keyboard with black keys, which much nicer. Also Compaq now requires you to make your own restore disks - however the process was pretty easy (provided you have some blank CD-R disks on hand) and seemed pretty fool proof. Computer also comes with a very readable user's manual. All and all a great computer experience at a nice price. ... Read more

Like most of its compatriots in Compaq's expansive Presario S5000nx series of computers, the Presario S5000nx Desktop PC is intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor. However, being the entry-level model of what is essentially an entry-level series, this unit is definitely not recommended for anything other than the absolute basics. Its price is certainly right, but if you intend to go beyond such general duties as word processing, homework and email, you should either check into another Compaq model or upgrade key components.

The Presario S5000nx Desktop is driven by a price-conscious Intel Celeron processor operating at 2.5 GHz –- an adequately fast CPU but not nearly as capable or as forward-looking as Intel's flagship processor, the Pentium 4. Compaq has added the bare minimum of RAM memory –- 128 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) – and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with just 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. 4-0 out of 5 stars amazing pc
i love this pc i got it as a birthday present and it is awsome. it runs multiple files so easily.mine came with 248 MB of ram and 2.60 GHZ i got it at wall-mart for $500.the only reason i gave it 4 stars is because it does not run games to perfectly.but,it downloads things(like songs, and games) very fast.all around a good computer(even though it is a little noisy)
p.s. i love the burner/compact disk combo drive

3-0 out of 5 stars Solid starting machine... just add RAM!
This is a solid starter computer.

Note the two different cosmetic faces this computer can have.

All you need to do is add ram. I added a 512mb PC2100 chip ($99 05/04) to this machine and it flies. I can play Madden 2004 just fine. Regularly, I will have opera full of windows, adobe photoshop, macromedia dreamweaver, winamp, seti@home, antivirus, two messenger programs running... and the computer is well under control. I can flip back and forth to windows with ease without any problems. If you want to play the latest games, then ofcourse, you're to need a better machine with a dedicated video card, but otherwise this is a great machine for 95% of tasks. The case has a small footprint, which I like. Note that I didn't use the modem, but the onboard network card is fine and I threw a second hard drive in with ease.

The front USB ports are handy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Would be zero stars if possible.
This was supposed to be a new computer, however, when it arrived, the box said that it was refurbished.

The modem did not work.

The customer service was poor. Obtaining a return authorization was like pulling teeth.

Other that that, everything was great!!!

My recommendation -- do not buy from Compaq or Office Depot.

4-0 out of 5 stars Compaq Presario S5000nx
This is a great machine for the price and I have had no problems with it so far. I upgraded the Ram to 256mb for a net cost of $40 over the purchase price...still a good deal! The Intergrated Intel graphics now uses up to 64mb of shared Ram rather than the 32mb when just 128mb Ram is installed. I picked this machine up at Radio Shack and mated it to a Samsung Syncmaster 753DF monitor. The support from Compaq is easy to access and the documentaion is clear. The machine does not ship with recovery disks..so I burnt my own following the instructions (6 disks) which took about 45 minutes. So what if it is not the best gaming machine around..that's what I have an X-box for! For my purposes, the S5000nx does the basics very well (WP, e-mail, I-net, tunes, burning, etc) at a hard to beat price.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lemon!!!
This was my first and last computer from HP. I purchased 2 units for my kids. Both are/were, since one is dead, extremelly loud.

I have been working with computers for over 20 years
and, with the exception of Symbolics LISP machines,
had never had a unit break on me after 8 months! "NMI: Parity error/Memory Parity error" was the error displayed.

I have been very disappointed with the email and phone
support from Compaq/HP. I was on hold
for over 2 hour just to get someone in India, who
could not speak English, and when I ask to speak with
a manager I was transferred back to the main menu. I
will make sure that I will never
purchase HP computer again. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

There was a time not so very long ago that a desktop computer in this price range was incapable of anything other than absolute basic tasks. But with the new Presario SR1010NX-B Desktop PC, Compaq proves those days are over. Virtually identical to the entry-level Presario SR1010NX but with the important additions of a display screen and speakers, the Presario SR1011NX-B won't suit demanding business environments or dedicated gaming studios but will fit right in to most home, home office or school dorm environments.

Driven by a cost-efficient Intel Celeron processor running at 2.7 GHz, a minimal alloent of 256 MB PC2100 DDR SDRAM main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video controller with up to 64 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario SR1011NX-B is definitely not a world-class speed machine or a 3-D powerhouse. However, for basic computer duties such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic communication and homework, it is more than adequate. Those who frequently multitask will need to double the system's memory, and anyone who stores large libraries of files will want to upgrade the enclosed hard disk, which at just 40 GB is comparatively smallish.

Compaq has installed a 3.5-inch diskette drive for small backups and older applications and a CD-RW optical drive through which you can load applications, play audio CDs and backup important data. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD playing or writing. Nor does it include an IEEE 1394 "FireWire" port (normally used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), though it does feature a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and gadgets such as USB-capable digital cameras and printers.

Unlike many of today's name brand computer packages, the Presario SR1011NX-B bundle also includes a monitor and desktop speaker system. The monitor, a standard 17-inch flat-screen CRT model -- not to be confused with much slimmer flat-panel LCD displays -- delivers 16 viewable inches and a dot pitch rating of .25 for clean, smooth images. The speaker system features two entry-level desktop speakers and appropriate wiring.

The bundled software package includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, the Microsoft Works productivity suite and Intuit's Quicken New User's Edition 2004 financial center. ... Read more
