Like its slightly more powerful cousin, the 5430US, Compaq's 5423US easilyhandles most any application thrown its way and provides plenty of room forexpansion and future upgrades. In addition to the components that come standardwith the 5423US, this bundle includes Compaq's 15-inch MV540 monitor and IJ650color inkjet printer, making this option an even smarter choice for thoseseeking a state-of-the-art computing experience for a down-to-earth price.

Topping the unit's impressive list of features is one of today's most potentprocessors, Intel's 1.6 GHz Pentium 4. Although pricier than most alternativeprocessors, including Intel's own Celeron and Pentium III and AMD's Athlon andDuron, Pentium 4 chips are generally faster where it counts most--clock speed. And of the numerous Pentium 4 processors Intel currently markets, the 1.6 GHzmodel is just a few rungs from the very top.

For the 5423US, Compaq matches this capable Intel processor with more thanenough high-end memory to operate any program currently available and handlemost any conceivable level of multitasking. With 512 MB of RAM at your disposal,it may be years until you even need to even contemplate upgrading to the onefull gigabyte the system supports.

The 5423US offers something else most prebuilt computers do not--a decent videocard. Packed with a generous 64 MB of video memory, the system's nVidia GeForce2MX graphics board will comfortably operate all 2-D and 3-D tasks and pump outsmooth frame rates and detailed textures at all but the absolute highest 3-Dgame screen resolutions. Truly serious gamers may want the additionalperformance perks of a GeForce3 or GeForce4 card, yet had best be prepared todrop quite a few more dollars in the process.

With the 5423US, data storage, movement, and backup should never be a problem. Its monstrous 80 GB UltraDMA hard drive offers oodles of space for even the mostsoftware-intensive workplace or gaming environment. Its 16x CD-RW drive permitsfast burning of audio and data backup or data transferal CDs. Its 3.5-inchfloppy disk drive supports any programs or files you might still store on afloppy disk, and its 16x DVD drive smoothly and accurately plays your favoritemovies. And if you ever do want to add another drive, the unit's two spareexpansion bays are ready to accommodate.

The 5423US is packed with a variety of tools to enhance day-to-day computing. Abuilt-in 56K modem supplies basic Internet connection speed, and a 10/100 MbpsEthernet card offers multiple computer networking and high-speed Internetpotential. The system's Compaq USB Internet keyboard sports an assortment ofconvenient one-touch multimedia and Internet controls, and its IEEE 1394FireWire port supports fast data transfer between computers and peripheraldevices such as camcorders.

Other important amenities include four USB ports (two of which are handilypositioned at the front of the case), a serial port for older mice and externalmodems, a parallel "printer" port, and an integrated AC97 Soundmax II Audio chipwith support for Dolby Digital surround sound. Compaq has not included speakersin the package, allowing users to choose and configure their own audio setup. The list of pre-installed software includes the Home Edition of the Windows XPoperating system, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Works 6.0, Quicken FinancialCenter/Quicken New User Edition, and InterVideo WinDVD. ... Slightly less machine than other Compaq computers, the Presario 5400US offers just enough power and accouterments to handle mostbasic personal computing needs at a price so low it may initially look like amisprint.

Included in this package are the Compaq FS740 17-inch monitor, as well as theirIJ650 color inkjet printer. However, bereft of a DVD drive, this system won'tplay movies. Sporting a midlevel 8 MB video card, it's not well suited todemanding visual applications such as the latest animated graphic programs or3-D games. And with just 128 MB of RAM, it won't effectively handle heavy-dutymultitasking and barely meets the recommended RAM for its bundled Home Editionof the Windows XP operating system. Fortunately, users are able to upgrade theirRAM allotment to an impressive 512 MB.

Regardless of its RAM configuration, the 5400US is more than adequate for a widevariety of users. Certainly it should suffice for basic everyday tasks such assimple accounting, word processing, light graphics, and homework. Teachers, students, home financial strategists, and children should find it quiteacceptable, as should gamers who gravitate to older titles. Obsessive Internetaddicts will have to supply their own network card and cable modem to really getup to speed, although the unit's 56K modem will handle less-demanding surfing.Music fans will love the integrated 8x CD-RW drive for burning and playing theirown CDs, although they must provide their own set of PC speakers.

Amazon.com Product Description

Powerful, yet priced to appeal to the budget-conscious consumer, the Compaq Presario 6010US desktop is an ideal solution for those who like to customize their personal computing environment.

As the most affordable model in Compaq's extensive 6000 series of desktops, the 6010US is nevertheless well equipped to handle almost any computing task. At the heart of the system lies a 1.4 GHz Athlon XP 1600+ processor with 128 KB of Level 1 pipeline burst cache, 256 KB of Level 2 pipeline burst cache and a 266 MHz system bus speed. Compaq has paired this potent (yet price sensitive) processor with 256 MB of 266 MHz DDR DRAM memory (upgradeable to 1 GB) and an nVidia GeForce2 graphics card. In plain English, the 6010US should efficiently run anything but the absolute latest and most demanding 3-D applications and games.

With the 6010US, your files and programs will be easy to store, easy to access, and easy to move. The system includes a large 40 GB hard drive for permanent storage and a 3.5-inch diskette drive for smaller files and quick backups. A fast 24x (write) CD-RW drive permits high-speed data and audio recording, and a 16x DVD drive allows error-free access to your favorite theatrical releases. If you ever do want to add another drive, the unit's spare expansion bay is ready to accommodate.

The 6010US is packed with a variety of amenities to enhance day-to-day computing, including a built-in 56K modem for low-speed Internet access and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet card for multiple computer networking and high-speed Web surfing. The system's Compaq Internet keyboard features an assortment of convenient one-touch multimedia and Internet controls, and its integrated SoundMAX III digital audio processor delivers clean stereo or Dolby Digital surround sound.

In order to keep the price reasonable, Compaq did not equip the 6010US with a monitor or speakers. Customers are given the freedom of selecting separate components, a perfect situation for those who favor a certain brand or style, or may already own such equipment from a previous setup. Compaq has, however, incorporated a truly grand total of six USB ports to help ensure future compatibility with the ever-growing army of plug-and-play peripherals.

The 6010US is packaged with an impressive array of installed software, including the Home Edition of the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Works 6.0, Quicken Financial Center/Quicken New User Edition and Intervideo's WinDVD movie player. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best!
I have noticed 100% faster from my older computer Pentium4 1.3Ghz. Internet plays ultra fast! Especially download files. Not too mention the biggest and fastest hard rive I found it from Compaq . Looks like nothing is missing here, DVD and Burners works like a champ, without and small slowdowns. What I like the most is extremely fast CPU with QuantiSpeed Architecture(more operations per cycle, ultra fast!) DDR memory! Athlon XP is highly popular now among PC magazines and Window XP, it won more awards from Pentium 4!!! Softwares are very easy for making music, and Pinacle Studio is really nice too, I can finally make my own video movies from my digital camera on the computer, it is very simple to use. I have been using this powerful machine for a week now, and I did not experienced and thing funny with this system.(This is my 4Th upgraded since 95) I love Compaq with Athlon XP 1600+ highly recommend this system for people who want best performance money can buy! Very nice package from Compaq , for sure you will not be disappointed. Thank you for such a great product!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great
At first I was a little skeptical of Compaw, but my fears was soon relieved. My old computer was an HP, and i hated all other manufacturers, but I decided to give Compaq a chance since HP does own them. Also, the price was great, only 599 at Circut City.

The computer was easy to setup, less than 5 minutes. This computer is really fast, even though it has a hard drive of 7200 rpm. The intergrated Geforce 2 graphics card is great for the time being, but I will probably upgrade to a Nvidia Geforce4 Ti 4200. The 256mb DDR SDRAM is a ok amount of memory. The computer only uses about 170 mb. The only exception is that the intergrated graphics take up 32mb, leaving the CPU with 224mb. Speaking of the CPU, which is 1600+ (1.4ghz), it is comparable to a Pentium 4 1.8 ghz because it has more operations per cycle. You are paying up to 500 dollars less than a Pentium 4. The sound card is also another great feature of this computer. Soundmax Integrated Audio is great. I have powerful 4.1 speakers and it sounds better than my old computer which had a Soundblaster Live card.

The CD-RW drive is ultra fast (24x max). I have yet to test its DVD ability. I probably will do that soon. I have so far experienced no problems. Although I did caught a few viruses from transfering stuff from my old computer. Norton's Virus Scan immediatly picked it up and repaired it.

The software installed is great. You get Roxio's Easy CD creator, Windows Media 8.0, and many games. Its enough to keep u busy for a while. Overall this computer is great. I highly recommend it. I got to go and play me some Max Payne right now, so go by this computer!

2-0 out of 5 stars Display/Network Woes Presario 6010us
Picked it up about a year ago, and it worked ok. However, when upgraded memory with PNY pc2100 512mb x 2 dimms, the computer has random lockups, video degradation and just generally unstable performance. Freezes playing dvd - and before that has a lot of random horizontal lines going all over the screen, spontaneously reboots while downloading from the internet via the network connection.

Memory has been tested and is known good. Motherboard and hard drive were replaced at an authorized facility and still the same results. I think it's the MSI's realization of NForce chipset, and I may be SOL. Definitely annoying and unworkable.

Support is difficult to get and wastes a lot of your time before getting you permission to ship to a repair facility. So, stay away :)

4-0 out of 5 stars my computer
i love this computer! i bought it in may of 02' and i am absolutely
satisfied with it! this is a computer i would reccomend anyone! i believe it is one of the best in its class (and with upgrades like 512 mb of ram instead of 256 mb;and 2100 processer instead of 1600..i believe it is top of the line) in short-this computer is worth your while!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great PC at a Great Price-
This computer is easy to set up and has plenty of speeed. We upgraded from an older 200 MHz AMD K6 also by Compaq and I find this machine super fast. We paired it up with a cable modem and surfing the web is super fast. I can also e-mail large word files and templates, which took forever on my previous computer, with lightening fast speed. We paired ours up with a matching FS7550 flat screen monitor and it looks great. Ours came with the standard 1 year of technical support for hardware etc and 90 days technical support for software, but you can call Compaq and upgrade the technical support on software for another year for a little over $50. I would highly recommend this machine to anyone who's looking to upgrade. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Although Compaq's inexpensive Presario S3200NX Desktop PC is geared primarily for less demanding environments and applications, it is far from a low-end computer. Featuring a CD burner and DVD player, a massive hard drive and a surprisingly gutsy processor, the Presario S3200NX is a great choice for those who need solid computing at a price that won't break the bank.

Powered by a cost-effective yet very capable 2 GHz AMD Athlon XP processor 2400+ with QuantiSpeed architecture, 256 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM (expandable to 1 full GB), and an integrated ProSaveageDDR KM266 graphics chipset with 32 MB shared (not dedicated) memory, the system is ready for most typical home, home office and business applications. Due to its relatively conservative allotment of RAM and mid-level 3-D graphics support, it cannot be considered an ideal high-end gaming or 3-D design platform unless upgraded. HP has installed an impressively large 120 GB hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive your data and enjoy the latest movies.

The Presario S3100NX features a variety of amenities to enhance everyday computing, including six high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, a convenient Presario Internet keyboard with hotkeys, a PS/2-style scrolling mouse, serial and parallel "printer" ports, an integrated 56K modem for basic Internet and email access, and a 10/100 Base-Y Fast Ethernet port for speedy network interaction and e-communication. The system is not equipped with a monitor or external stereo speakers, thus allowing users to custom select these components.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great computer ...
I bought this computer at a local retail store on ... At the time there were no product specs on the HP/Compaq website. Now there are. I finally found out what memory to buy to upgrade to 512mb... I also added a PNY GEForce MMX 440 64 DDR with TV out video card .... I downloaded the latest Microsoft Nvidia driver. Now the computer is increadibly fast. I played the "Die Another Day" DVD on the computer and it was flawless even in full screen. I plugged in a pair of SONY headphones (not powered) and the sound was fantastic!!. I loaded Medal of Honor Allied Assault and played the game for 4 hours. No lockups whatsoever. I have copied and burned numerous songs from cd to cd. The audio tracks sound great. I have never had a better performing or faster computer than this one. Now all I have to do is upgrade to broadband internet and I will have the total package. Huge hard-drive that operates at 8.9 ms seektime and extremely quiet. This computer is definitely a good buy for the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent buy
Fast processor, huge hard disk, DVD & CD-RW. (The pre-installed XP includes software for both.) No speakers, however, and it only supports the powered variety. RAM is a little low for gaming/graphics, but that's still a cheap upgrade (and the system will support up to 1GB). There are more powerful machines out there, but this has more than 90% of users will ever need. Highly recommended. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

One of the most affordable computers in the entire Compaq roster, the Presario S4200nx Desktop PC is a perfect low-cost solution for light home and home office applications. Differing from the entry-level Presario S4100nx by virtue of a marginally faster CPU, twice as much memory and a larger hard disk, the Presario S4200nx is nevertheless not a good choice for demanding business applications or sophisticated games. It will, however, make quick work of standard applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, homework, and e-communications.

Sporting a 2.60 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 512 MB PC2100 DRR SDRAM memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics chipset with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario S4100nx delivers good value and satisfactory mid-level performance, but is far removed from Compaq’s top-of-the-line Presario 8000T series. To store and transfer your data, Compaq has equipped the unit with an extremely large 120 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a combination CD-RW/DVD drive that supports CD burning and playing and DVD playback but does not permit DVD writing.

The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port, and a whopping half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has also enclosed a convenient Presario Internet keyboard and standard non-scrolling Presario mouse, but has not equipped the unit with a viewing monitor, wireless networking, or a FireWire port (a common data link with external devices such as digital camcorders).

For the available feature (burner and USB ports in the front)it is a good buy at least for what I paid ... I already own a compaq and quiet happy with the basic needs for my kids (school projects & of course downloading songs).

3-0 out of 5 stars A Basic Needs Machine
A lot of people feel they need to go out and pay a ton of money for a computer that will do all of the basic stuff most people do. If you are just using a computer to surf the web, do word processing, spreadsheets, and other office stuff then you don't need a high end system. If you want a computer to play graphics intensive games such as Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament or if you are doing video editing, then you are better off looking at other systems or better yet, building your own since most retail system skimp on the graphics card (on-board, TNT2 or Geforce MX instead of a regular Geforce 3 or 4 or a Radeon 8500 card). At any rate, this computer is just fine for the average user.

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I purched this product Thursday of last week. I purched this product at the price of (Tax and all) 1090.00. At Radio Shack in Muscle Shoals, Al. Not very happy at this time, after seeing your cost!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Compaq Desktop
This is an excellent computer for a person just getting into computers. Don't spend $$$ on stuff you do not need. I bought this Compaq for my 6 year old son and it is perfect. This is my third Compaq that I have purchased and they have never given me any problems. If you don't need a 80 gig HD, DVD player, CDR or a very fast CPU, this is the desktop for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Limited but effective appliance.
If you are looking for a basic machine to do a little surfing, some household bookkeeping, and some regular emailing, there's nothing wrong with this Compaq. Certainly, the price isn't bad either. However, it does not include a monitor, which you'll need to buy separately, and it does not include any kind of NIC (network interface card), so if you have or will be having any type of broadband access (DSL, cable or satellite), you'll need to buy not only a modem, but a NIC as well (though some of the newer cable modems will utilize the USB port quite easily). The machine is certainly not set up for gamers either, with very limited graphics capabilities (a result of the low power NVidia card and the Celeron chip's inherent limitations) and mediocre ESS sound. Thanks to the rather small hard drive it would not be ideal for an MP3 collector either, though there is an adequate 8X CD burner included. Anyway, like I said, it's a good, basic machine and if that's your interest, you'll be happy with the unit. I should point out that expanding these Compaqs (a lot like their HP bretheren) is a daunting task; things are tight in the case and adding cards and drives is a challenge. Lastly, Compaq's reliability has been acceptable, though its service has been less so. ... Read more

It would be hard to go wrong with a system like the Compaq Presario 5320US. 1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this PC
As of October 23, 2001, this machine is listed @ (dollar amount) but it only comes with 16MB of VRAM, SDRAM (the wildly inexpensive and currently mid-tech sort), what looks to be on-board sound, and only a 17' monitor: this is an overpriced, underperforming PC. While the P4 cpus have high clocks, my 1.5 ghz rdram equipped p4 at work performs about as well as my p3 1ghz at proc intensive tasks like compiling and batch processes. AMD far surpasses most intel procs in most benchmarks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful.
This computer is perfect for my kids. They use it for anything. This is one of the best computer we have bought. I don't think we will go back to HP or Apple. Compaq has really put some thought into this machine. The ram is perfect and the prcesser is fast enough to run any game I have. The screen is a perfect size not to big not to small, The only draw back is you don't get web cam. But this is really a five star computer.....

5-0 out of 5 stars Very great computer
I bought this computer and has been outstanding. I'm new at this and had everything ready to go within 45min. I have been able to do so much with this computer. My only problem is I waited this long to get one. I would suggest this to any one thaat needs a computer.A+ ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Whether intended for a business or leisure environment, the Compaq Presario 6370US Desktop is right at home. You'll need to purchase a separate monitor and speakers, and you may want to eventually upgrade the video card (particularly if you're a fan of complex 3-D applications), but the Presario 6370us is otherwise a capable rig at a palatable price point.

Compaq has selected a powerful 2.53 GHz Pentium 4 processor for the Presario 6370US, and complemented it with 512 MB of fast SDRAM memory and a 64 MB NVidia GeForce MX420 graphics card. This system "engine" is more than enough for virtually any application currently on the market, although ardent gamers or 3D animators may want to add a faster graphics card at a later date.

Sporting a massive 120 GB hard disk, the unit offers plenty of on-board storage room for all your programs, files and downloaded MP3s. If you need even more space, you can backup and archive your files on the integrated 40x (Write) 10x (Rewrite) 40x (Read) optical drive, which also allows you to listen and burn audio CDs and enjoy the latest cinematic releases.

The Presario 6370US is packed with amenities to enhance your everyday computing, including six USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, two IEEE 1394 FireWire ports for interaction with external devices such as digital camcorders, and serial and parallel "printer" ports. Communication options include a 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet connection, Wi-Fi Wireless Ethernet, and an integrated 56K low-speed modem. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome!!the best computer yet
THIS COMPUTER ROCKS!it starts up really fast(3sec) the system is soo quiet u cannot even hear it when its on.The modem seems alot faster then my old computers modem JUST BUY THIS ONE ITS GREAT !!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good system
This is a great choice for anyone looking for a mid to high end PC. This system has a nice array of components and Compaq's reliability is pretty good. If you are a heavy 3D gamer you may have to upgrade the graphics within a year or so, but that's true of most of the systems sold today.

Let look at what's included:
CPU: P4 processor 2.53GHz - Excellent, plenty of CPU horse power no matter what you want to do.

RAM: 512MB DDR-SDRAM - The Amazon specs list this as plain old SDRAM but is really 266MHz DDR-SDRAM. There is faster ram out there if you are a power user who wants to push the edge. However DDR-266 is a perfect fit of speed and reliability for most users.

Hard Drive: 120GB - More than enough storage for just about anyone.

Other drives: CD-RW (40x write/10x rewrite/40x read), and 16x max speed DVD-ROM. Perfect. Don't expect a 40x write speed when creating audio CDROMs. For reasons too involved to go into here, it doesn't work out that way.

Graphics: 64MB DDR GeForce4 MX420 w/ TV out - Good card but not cutting edge. If you are a cutting edge gamer you will want to upgrade this within the year. The good news is that a good upgrade doesn't have to cost you more than 100 bucks.

Ports 10/100 Base-T Fast Ethernet; 56K ITU v.90 flex modem, lots of USB 2.0 - Compaq did a good job of loading this up with all the ports you could want.

Software: Windows XP (great!), MS Works (okay), and all the usual stuff like anti virus and photo editing software.

Overall this is a good package loaded with just about everything you need. It doesn't have speakers (most bundled speakers aren't worth your time anyway). If you are looking for a LCD monitor to go with this system it is important you get one that supports an analog input. This system does not have a digital DVI output. My advice: buy a LCD monitor that supports both analog and digital inputs and upgrade your computer in a year or so with a video card that has a digital DVI output. The digital output quality is superior to the analog output quality; especially on Nvidia based graphics cards. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics
Compaq's new and exceedingly wide-ranging Presario SR1100NX series of desktop PCs targets most every segment of the computer buyer market -- from financially strapped students to high-power business executives. This particular unit, the Presario SR1120NX, is one of the least expensive yet most cost-effective models in the lineup, offering superior multitasking performance and quite a bit more storage space than its entry-level sibling, the Presario SR1110NX, for just a few dollars more. Demanding users and those who deal primarily in high-end multimedia or games will want to look at one of Compaq's upscale models, but anyone who prioritizes their budget should find the Presario SR1120NX exceedingly appealing.

Processor
Intel's cost-effective Celeron processor often forms the basis for budget-priced machines, and the Presario SR1120NX is no different. What is different is the configuration of this particular Celeron. Intel's newest Celeron is named the Celeron D, a tricked up version of the venerable chip that offers 256KB of level-two cache (twice that of standard Celeron chips) and a 533MHz Quad Pumped Bus, a 33% improvement over the norm. The Celeron D in the Presario SR1120NX operates at 2.66 MHz, which would be considered a fast Celeron even without the new and improved configuration. Though it doesn't offer the power of Intel's Pentium chip, this is a strong entry-level CPU.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, though frequently accessed and recently accessed information is stored for faster retrieval in Random Access Memory. With more installed memory, your PC operates faster and permit more efficient multitasking. The Presario SR1120NX features 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory (expandable to two full GB), which is considered an average allotment in today's desktop market. As such, it is perfectly satisfactory for most single task and multitasking assignments.

Video
An Intel Extreme Graphics video controller is integrated on the motherboard, featuring just 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. While quite capable of accurately displaying most any 2D application such as word processing, Internet surfing and 2D graphic design, the system will struggle to smoothly display advanced 3D graphics, animations, and many mid-to high-end games.

The system does not include a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The Presario SR1120NX produces sound via an audio chip integrated on the motherboard. This is a typical setup for inexpensive PCs. Speakers are not included.

Hard Drive
The unit's internal 80 MB hard drive is double the capacity of that in the entry-level Presario SR1110NX, sporting enough storage space for an average allotment of files and applications and a substantial music or multimedia collection too. But if you consistently work with jumbo-size video, 3D graphic and audio files, you'll may need to upgrade this drive or add another.

Optical Drive
The system features dual optical drives - a fast 48X32X48X CD-RW drive for playing and burning music CDs and archiving files to CD, and a DVD-ROM drive for playing DVDs. DVD writing, often used to backup extremely large amounts of data or copy home movies to long-lasting DVD format, is not possible unless you add a DVD burner.

Connectivity and Expansion
With five high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal -- one of which is conveniently located on the front -- you'll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Compaq has not included IEEE 1394 FireWire ports (most commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), though it has equipped the system with a built-in 9-in-1 memory card reader for accessing information stored on a wide variety of removable memory cards. This is a surprise find on a budget-priced PC. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections. The system's two available PCI slots may be used for add-on audio cards, video cards, and the like.

Operating System and Software
Considering its affordable price point, the Presario SR1120NX features an impressive software package headed by Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. Compaq will also pre-install Microsoft's Works 7.0 word processing and productivity suite, Microsoft Money Standard 2004, Quicken New User Edition 2004, a one-year subscription to the MSN Encarta online information center, and a variety of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Keyboard and Mouse
A standard Compaq keyboard and Compaq mouse with convenient scrolling wheel are enclosed.

The Basics
Compaq’s new and exceedingly wide-ranging Presario SR1130NX series of desktop PCs targets most every segment of the computer buyer market -- from financially strapped students to high-power business executives. This particular unit, the Presario SR1130NX, sits neatly in the middle of the lineup, delivering strong midlevel computing at a price that won’t empty your pocketbook. Gamers and anyone who dabbles in 3D graphics will want to upgrade the unit’s 3D video capabilities or look at a more upscale Compaq offering, but the unit should otherwise fit perfectly in virtually any computing environment. Of special note is the system’s huge 160 GB hard disk, a rarity at this price point.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a miracle of miniaturization that houses millions of microscopic transistors and governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Presario SR1130NX, Compaq has installed an AMD Athlon XP 3000+ CPU, a competent yet cost effective CPU that’s fast enough for everyone but extreme power users who run the latest ultra-demanding applications. For most any home, home office, scholastic or business situation, this CPU is more than sufficient.

Memory
Though computers typically store information on their hard drive, they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM). Data stored in RAM is instantly available to you, thus translating to a more efficient computing experience. More RAM means faster computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Presario SR1130NX features 512 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM main memory (expandable to two full GB), which is considered an average allotment in today’s desktop market. As such, it is perfectly satisfactory for most single task and multitasking assignments.

An Intel Extreme Graphics video controller is integrated on the motherboard. This chipset features just 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. While quite capable of accurately displaying most any 2D application such as word processing, Internet surfing and 2D graphic design, the system will struggle to smoothly display advanced 3D graphics, animations, and many mid-to high-end games.

Compaq has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today’s many alternatives.

Sound
The Presario SR1130NX produces six-channel sound via an audio chip integrated on the motherboard. This is a typical setup for midlevel PCs, producing satisfying but not earth shaking surround sound. Speakers are not enclosed.

Hard Drive
The unit’s internal 160 MB hard drive is considered spacious in any price range, sporting enough storage space for a massive allotment of files and applications and a huge music or multimedia collection too.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

This system features dual optical drives - a fast 48X CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs and a versatile DVD+R/RW drive for all that other fun stuff. Having two optical drives also allows you to copy from one CD to another with much less effort and much more speed than with a single drive.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports -- two of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you’ll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as digital cameras and printers. Compaq has also included two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a built-in 9-in-1 memory card reader for accessing information stored on a wide variety of removable memory cards. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections. The system’s two available PCI slots and single available PCI slot may be used for add-on audio cards, video cards, and the like.

Operating System and Software

Amazon.com Product Description

Not all computer users are created equally, and neither are allCompaq computers. In fact, the Compaq desktop and notebook lineup isseveral dozen deep, each model configured slightly differently than thenext in order to reach every segment of the computing populace.Compaq's most affordable machine, the Presario 5400US desktop unit isdesigned to appeal to those who can't afford or don't require thecapabilities of its midrange and high-end machines or the portabilityof its notebooks. Slightly less machine than other Compaq computers, the Presario 5400US offers just enough power and accouterments tohandle most basic personal computing needs at a price so low it mayinitially look like a misprint.

Included in this package is the Compaq FS740 17-inch monitor. However, bereft of a DVD drive, this system won't play movies. Sporting amidlevel 8 MB video card, it's not well suited to demanding visualapplications such as the latest animated graphic programs or 3-D games. And with just 128 MB of RAM, it won't effectively handle heavy-dutymultitasking and barely meets the recommended RAM for its bundled HomeEdition of the Windows XP operating system. Fortunately, users are ableto upgrade their RAM allotment to an impressive 512 MB.

Regardless of its RAM configuration, the 5400US is more than adequatefor a wide variety of users. Certainly it should suffice for basiceveryday tasks such as simple accounting, word processing, lightgraphics, and homework. Teachers, students, home financial strategists, and children should find it quite acceptable, as should gamers whogravitate to older titles. Obsessive Internet addicts will have tosupply their own network card and cable modem to really get up tospeed, although the unit's 56K modem will handle less-demandingsurfing. Music fans will love the integrated 8x CD-RW drive for burningand playing their own CDs, although they must provide their own set ofPC speakers.

Though indeed a budget computer, the Presario 5400US in many waysdoesn't feel budget. Its Compaq USB Internet keyboard offers a numberof one-touch Internet, e-mail, and multimedia controls in addition toits standard allotment of keys. Its compact case features a variety ofexternal connections and amenities, including a 3.5-inch floppy diskdrive, four USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals such as joysticksand scanners, a speaker output and microphone jack, and a set of RJ11phone-in and -out jacks.

The 5400US is powered by a 1.2 GHz Intel Celeron processor, whichdelivers plenty of juice for fundamental tasks. Its 20 GB hard drive, though somewhat below the norm for most current desktop systems, iscertainly sizable enough to store and operate all the software Compaqhas bundled with the unit, a list that includes Microsoft Money 2001,Microsoft Works 6.0, Selective QuickRestore, Quicken FinancialCenter/Quicken New User Edition, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0,America Online 6.0, Netscape Navigator 6.1, and a one-year subscriptionto Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe Encyclopedia. ...
