pros: 1) 15 inch display. It is very clear. Brightness is easily adjustable. cons: 1) USB 1.1 port and no firewire port. Basically means you cannot have fast access to external data. If you plan to do video editing, you will have to buy a firewire PCMCIA card. USB 1.1 is much slower compared to USB 2.0. Still, you should be able to get by to use with a digital camera.

Amazon.com Product Description Sporting a sleek design and a futuristic two-tone color scheme, the Presario710US looks substantially snazzier than many of its notebook peers. It tips thescales at a comfortable 6.4 pounds and measures in with a slightly larger thanaverage 10.6-by-12.4-by-1.64-inch profile. Under the hood, Compaq has fashioneda reasonably powerful engine consisting of a 1 GHz AMD Duron processor and 256MB of RAM (expandable to 512 MB), a setup that won't elicit blinding speed butmotors along nicely and easily runs several concurrent applications. Thesystem's 20 GB hard drive offers plenty of room for all the MP3 files you maywant to collect and later broadcast through the unit's impressively proficientJBL Audio bass reflex speaker system. Powered by a 16 MB Via ProSavage graphics card and capable of 1,024-by-768resolution, the Presario's 14.1-inch LCD display is ready to handle all themovies you'll play on the unit's integrated 8x DVD-ROM drive. Its keyboardsection offers full-size keys, a separate cursor and touch pad, and an array ofsix one-touch buttons for instant control of such everyday functions as speakervolume, e-mail, and Internet access. A 3.5-inch floppy disk drive ensuressupport for older programs that have yet to find their way to disc, and a 56Kmodem permits acceptable Internet access speeds. The Presario 710US veritably bristles with ports. Compaq has included two USBports for plug-and-play peripherals such as joysticks, a 10/100 Mbps Ethernetnetwork connection, a single parallel port for devices such as printers, anNTSC/PAL port for connection to various video devices, a multipurpose PC Cardslot, and a speaker-out and microphone-in port. In addition, the system isequipped with AMD's battery-saving PowerNow technology, which adjusts processorclock speed to determine the best compromise between speed, power, and batterylife. This is a valuable tool for users who go long periods of times betweencharges. Preloaded software includes useful utilities such as Microsoft Internet Explorer6.0, Microsoft Works 6.0, Microsoft Money 2001, Norton AntiVirus, Roxio's niftyEasy CD Creator 5.01, InterVideo WinDVD 3.0 DVD player, and a one-yearsubscription to Microsoft's Encarta Online Deluxe Encyclopedia. Users willoperate their system with the Home Edition of Windows XP, arguably Microsoft'smost stable OS since Windows 98 Second Edition. Faster, beefier notebooks are not hard to find. Yet for those who don't havevast, untapped financial resources, Compaq's Presario 710US is fine choice. Reviews (10)
WOW, love this machine!!! Added an Orinocco gold wireless LAN card, and I am ready to rock! Windows Update downloaded Wireless LAN and Video drivers (it recognized my S3 video card with no problem), then installed them on the fly with no reboot! Now that's the way an operating system should be! Like the ability to increase the video RAM up to 32 MB via a BIOS setting (it's shared with system memory). Changed it to 32MB, and it works well. DVD drive & software produce great video. Like the S-Video output, and integrated 10/100 ethernet too (compared this to an HP in the same price range, but it didn't have either of these). My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that if the battery gets really low, the machine will experience a keyboard failure during the boot-up POST process (even if it's plugged in). Sometimes you have to unplug it, and remove the battery in order to get it straight again. It's a small nit, and it doesn't happen often. Would definitely recommend it to anyone that's looking for an entry level laptop.
First one I received had to be returned because of defective LCD. The real problem with this machine is that it is made to work only with the software package that Compaq provides (WinXp Home Edition package). Compaq lists only a couple of drivers & updates on their website (mouse and modem drivers). Beware: Windows 2000 (and even XPPro, if you're installing your own copy) won't recognize this machine's video & audio cards. Even Windows Update site doesn't have the drivers listed for these devices, so you're on your own once you get out of default-factory-installed software environment. Bottom line: This is an OK product if you are a casual user and intend to use it the way Compaq wants you to use. If you like using it the way you want to, don't buy this one (especially if you're concerned with reliability & compatibility issues).

Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the Presario 2145US is a 2.0 GHz AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ processor. Compaq has complemented this cost effective CPU with a generous 512 MB DDR SDRAM system memory (expandable to 1024 MB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 4X AGP graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory. As such, the unit is not the best choice for 3-D games, animation or drawing packages and high-complexity business apps. Sharing the data storage duties is a sizeable 60 GB hard disk and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive data and watch your favorite movies. In its stock setup, the system will not allow you to record to DVD media. At 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.57 inches and 7.25 pounds, the Presario 2145US is slightly below average size and therefore comfortably portable. The unit is equipped with a large 15-inch display screen capable of crystal clear 1024x768 resolutions. Other features include two USB 1.1 ports for plug and play peripheral connections, an 88-key keyboard, a Touch Pad with on/off and dedicated up/down scroll surface, and a pair of internal stereo speakers. Communication connectivity options include a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access and a high-speed RJ-45 LAN connector. The computer doesn't come with a wireless communication option, or FireWire and USB 2.0 ports for fast data interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Money 2003, Microsoft Works 6.0, and a variety of multimedia applications.

1. The offer and rebates did not apply from Compaq, but only from an authorized reseller. 2. Right out of the box the 700z system had Driver errors and a bad modem. Corporate tech support sugested that I return it and buy another through a reseller. 3. They then took 2 months to clear up my account for financing after I returned the system but meanwhile I bought a newer system - a 705us. 4. The rebate went through and everything was working okay until the floppy drive went bad, which occured in four weeks. It never wrote to the hard drive and I couldn't copy to or from other disks onto any other computer. 5. I called tech support and they sent out a box for repair pickup and told me the turnaround would be 3-5 days. Well, it took over 4 weeks to get the system back. 6. The repair shop failed to recognize that the second system was mine and did not follow through with repairs even when all the proper paperwork was channeled through support on the phone. I also seemed to get tech swupport in India when I called during certain business hours, and they were not help at all! 7. I wish they could dumped the hard drive info on to a refurbished 2710 system that has a better track record. As it is I'll use this until I get the funds for another system. My advice is to wait until they get the bugs worked out on this system. They don't even have a Docking station yet, but they'll tell you the part number to order the "phantom" station. In their defense they have tried to compensate me by sending memory to update my system but they've sent the wrong memory twice! I'm giving it 2 stars since it worked beautifully when it was up and running and the screen is clear and bright! Oh, the DVD player on my system works great and I've played it through my TV with no complaints! Now the problem is the memory that was sent to me. The 256k chip freezes the system and I've tried to get it fixed but calling tech support only adds to the frustration.
A couple things of things that weren't mentioned in the other reviews....the PCMCIA slot had no guide initially so the pins bent after I inserted the wireless card a few times, and the power adapter quit working after 1.5 years. Tech support was worthless. Overall, this product is a joke. Avoid it at all costs.
*Overheats!!! (You better have some fans handy) Basically after replacing the battery on this machine it becomes a decent machine for internet browsing, instant messaging, and word processing. That's really about it. I've done basic things in Fireworks, multitasking doesn't really lag this machine that much. It's a decent machine but has many problems. I will be giving this machine to my dad soon when I can afford a nice NON-Compaq/HP notebook. I really wish I had shopped around but when you have money in pocket and get excited you tend to make impulse buys. All well, lesson learned. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description Measuring 1.5 by 12.8 by 10.6 inches and weighing 6.69 pounds, this Presario is relatively light for a notebook that sports such a large TFT screen and includes a built-in floppy drive. ATI's Mobility Radeon drives the display at 1,024 x 768 resolution, offering enough graphics horsepower for the latest 3-D games. The 900US also includes video-out so you can play games, do presentations, or watch DVDs on your TV, and a VGA connector supporting a desktop monitor at resolutions up to 1,600 x 1,200. AMD's Mobile Athlon 1700+ (1.47 GHz) processor and 256 MB of DDR SDRAM give this system enough speed to handle any application, from word processing to video conferencing to video editing. The DVD/CD-RW combo drive lets you play DVD movies and burn your own CDs, and integrated JBL Pro Audio speakers with Bass Reflex deliver high-quality stereo sound for watching movies or listening to music. The large 30 GB hard drive offers plenty of space for storing video, music, or applications. The Presario offers every type of connectivity you'll need, including a FireWire port for connecting to DV video cameras and external drives. Combined with a compatible video camera, this turns the Presario into a video editing workstation. In addition, the system includes a 10/100 Ethernet adapter, a 56K modem, two USB ports, a parallel port, and a high-speed infrared port. The system's keyboard section features a standard 88-key layout and a touch pad for cursor control. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 6.0, Microsoft Money 2001, a one-year subscription to the Encarta Online Encyclopedia, Roxio's EZ CD Creator, and Norton AntiVirus 2002. Well, I considered several Compaq models... the 732US, 725US, and the 900US. I chose the 900US, because there is more GB, considerably faster, and a larger 15" screen. Although it is not that light, the size is alright and absolutely manageable. I'm not going into the specifics, because I believe that has already been said. Overall, I am VERY satisfied with this notebook. It has almost everything I need and the price was economical. Although the software selections weren't great, Microsoft Works 6.0 is adequate for all my lab write-ups, essays, spreadsheets, graphs, tables, and all those extra fun stuff. Besides, this laptop is expandable and upgradable! This is great selection for any home user, college student, and typical office user. I believe it consists of all you need as far as workability is concerned. I believe this notebook will suffice to provide for the typical gamer. Initial setup was a breeze and Windows XP is easy and fun. I am able to transfer images from my desktop, edit images, and more. A serious digital artist may need a better screen though. Nevertheless, IT IS 15" and the 1024X768 is awesome... perfect. The screen is clear, nice, and bright. The sound is great with CD's AND DVD's, but music from the internet, AOL radio specifically, can be sketchy at times... probably due to my internet connection though. By the way, DVDs play GREAT! This notebook is fast, slick, economical, and it fulfills all that I need in a computer. I'm very satisfied with this purchase. I love using it :)
The system comes equipped with an Athlon XP 1700+(1.47Ghz and a 266Mhz FSB), 256 MB PC-2100 DDR Ram, ATI IGP320M chipset and integrated graphics, a 30GB 4200 RPM ATA 100 hard drive, and DVD(x8)/CDRW(8/8/24) combo drive and a 15" TFT screen (1024x768 max resolution). What I like: The screen is large and bright, though in my opinion not as good as a high quality CRT. The graphics capabilities are average and will be enough for a person who wants to play the latest games at lower resolutions and detail settings. I was able to run Jedi Knight II at 800x600 with high quality and Return to Castle Wolfenstein at 640x480 with medium detail settings. I've also done some benchmarking using 3dMark 2001. The scores at the default setting were around 2600. I haven't noticed any ghosting, which can occur when images on the screen move very fast. The sound is fairly loud and sounds good on DVDs and MP3s or music Cds. The notebook runs MS office apps with ease and all programs start almost instantly. Also, I've hooked it up to my TV with an s-video cable and an audio cable and watched a few DVDs without any problems. In addition, the battery life is outstanding going over 3 hours if you do basic tasks like typing. It also lasts for over two hours if you watch movies or play games. On average, I would say it lasts just over 2.5 hours. That is better than most P4 based notebooks, especially the ones using desktop CPUs. Finally the system comes with a mail in form for a free wireless card to connect to the Internet. You only have to pay shipping and handling plus tax on the shipping. What I don't like: The system can run hot near the memory, especially when the CPU runs at its full speed. It never gets to the point where it will burn you though. Don't believe this is only an athlon problem, because I've used a P3 1 GHz Compaq Armada 500 notebook that ran as hot, if not hotter. If you set the power settings to "max battery" the system clocks itself down substantially and the system runs cool. The speakers can also crackle or get distorted when a music file or game with a lot of bass is playing. This does not happen often and is not really a huge problem. Another thing I don't like is the preinstalled software. The system comes with MS works and a load of other useless apps like AOL and CompuServe. I just uninstalled all of the apps I didn't want. In addition, the system is a bit heavy, but lighter than many "desktop replacements" like the Dell 8200. Also, I would have liked to have seen USB 2.0 ports, but a simple add on card ... could fix the problem. It does have a fire wire port though. Finally, the documentation is not very good, though a CD-rom with more detailed instructions is included. If you know nothing about computers you should still be able to figure things out. For people like me, with more expertise than the typical user, I would liked to have had more detailed specs and information. Summary: I would recommend this system to anyone who wants good performance for a low price. If you like to play games don't expect the performance of a Geforce 4, or even 3, but some gaming is possible. What kept this system from getting 5 stars was the documentation, extra software, and average game performace. This system can do and MS office apps, plays DVD movies, and burn cds (with Adaptec Easy CD creator). If you need a notebook for college, a desktop replacement (if you don't want to run Quake 3 at 300 FPS), or just a system to travel with, the 900US is a great buy. ... Read more
