1. Amd Athlon 64 3000+. It can run the 32 and 64 bit but there isnt any 64 bit yet so its good to be prepared for the future.
The only cons are that the battery only lasts about 2.5 hours and the fact that HP/Compaq feels the need to load it up with about a gigabite worth of software that you do not need unless you have a HP camera or printer, and even if you did it would come with the software you needed.

Amazon.com Product Description Compaq has built the Presario 3080us around a fast yet cost-effective 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and a generous 512 MB of 266 MHz Random Access Memory (upgradeable to 1024 MB). The system's graphics chipset, an SiS 650 UMA 4x AGP with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory, will suffice for all 2-D and many 3-D tasks but may have trouble efficiently rendering the latest and most demanding 3-D animation and drawing packages and 3-D games. Topping the unit's exciting list of features is its display screen, a 16-inch monster capable of super-clean 1024 by 768 resolution. You'll enjoy watching DVD movies on this jumbo-size screen via the unit's integrated DVD/CD-RW drive, which also allows you to burn and listen to audio CDs and backup the data you've stored on its adequately-sized 40 GB hard disk. Compaq has equipped the Presario 3080us with a wide range of state-of-the-art amenities, including four ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, one IEEE 1394 port for efficient interaction with external devices such as digital camcorders, a full-size 88-key keyboard with embedded numeric keypad and Touch Pad pointing device, a built-in 56K modem for low-speed connectivity and an RJ-45 LAN port for high-speed surfing and network access. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7, Quicken New User Edition, and a small selection of multimedia and communication utilities.

Amazon.com Product Description Compaq has loaded the Presario 2585us with more power than most users will ever need. Heading the list of components is a speedy 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast 266 MHz RAM memory. This combination will easily handle even the most challenging applications and multitasking, although the system's ATI Mobility Radeon 3-D video controller features just 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory and thusly isn't equipped to efficiently render ultra-complex 3-D games or animations. It should, however, be more than enough for midlevel 3-D applications. The Presario 2585us features several welcome amenities, including an oversized 15-inch XGA TFT display screen (maximum resolution 1024x768), an 88-key keyboard, a TouchPad with dedicated vertical scroll up/down pad, and a pair of JBL Pro Performance speakers. At 60 GB, the enclosed hard disk is sufficient for most purposes and should have a few gigabytes left over for a library of music or video files. Impressively, the system's optical drive permits not only basic CD burning and playing and DVD playing but also DVD burning. Via the unit's integrated FireWire port, users can download home movies from their digital camcorders, then edit them and record them to digital media With the Presario 2585us, your communication options are virtually limitless. In environments with wired connections, you can select from a low-speed 56K modem or high-speed 10/100BASE-T Ethernet LAN. When hardwiring is a problem, you can stay in touch with the unit's integrated 54g wireless LAN. Other key components include a trio of fast USB 2.0 ports, an S-Video TV-Out, a single PC Card slot, and a standard assorent of connections. The impressive bundled software package includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Quicken New User Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0 and a range of multimedia and Internet utilities. Reviews (6)
1) The fan is loud, as others have proclaimed 2) The DVD player freezes at the start of a movie -I've worked with Compaq support from their web site for a couple of days and found that I needed to download Softpaq SP23136 which updates the drivers. Their customer service is nice (online chat) but I have to contact them at least three times in three days to finally find the problem. 3) For a P4, it seems very slow compared to my home PC (which is four years old). Overall, it was a good value for my money ... (as soon as I work out the bugs).

Amazon.com Product Description The Presario sports a slim profile at 10.1 by 12.48 by 1.3 inches. It weighs only 5.7 pounds, making it ideal for occasional adventures, but may not be light enough for the hard-core road warrior. Intel's 1.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor gives this system enough horsepower for practically any task. It's more than adequate for office and Internet applications, and the built-in 32 MB ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics are ready to take on the latest in 3-D games. Those graphics can be output to either the 1,024 x 768 14.1-inch XGA TFT display, an external monitor, or, using the S-video output, to your TV set. The system comes with a generous 256 MB of 266 MHz DDR memory, which can be upgraded to 1 GB, and a large 20 GB UltraDMA hard drive. The hot-swappable 24x/8x/8x CD-RW/DVD driveboth plays DVD movies and can write CD-R or CD-RW disks. Using this DVD capability in conjunction with the S-video output lets this notebook do double duty as a portable DVD player. The built-in JBL Pro Audio speakers with Bass Reflex offer excellent stereo output for music, movies, and games. In terms of connectivity, the notebook includes both a built-in 56K modem for dial-up Internet connections and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter for broadband Internet and home networking. Two USB ports, a parallel port, and an infrared port connect the system to peripherals. There's no IEEE 1394 (FireWire) jack, though, for connecting to digital camcorders; to add that feature you'd need to use the notebook's sole PC Card slot. The excellent software bundle makes this notebook a powerful tool right out of the box. Microsoft's easy-to-use Works 6.0 provides important functions like a word processor and spreadsheet, while Money 2001 lets you manage your finances on the PC. Norton AntiVirus 2002 protects your system against viruses, and a one-year subscription to Microsoft Encarta Online Deluxe lets you access a full-featured multimedia encyclopedia. Roxio's Easy CD Creator makes it easy to create your own music CDs or back up important data to the CD-RW drive. Reviews (2)
This is the coolest looking notebook I have ever seen. A silver top and bottom; black around the screen and keyboard, with silver outlining the keyboard, and chrome trim (I'm a chrome freak!). The DVDR/CDRW combo drive is awesome! And I never expected such an excellent DVD picture to come out of this thing. Sure, some things are a little "snowy" and the colors aren't as vivid as they could possibly be, but I had low expectations going into this thing. My first choices before this laptop were a Sony Vaio (because they're SO slim) or an HP (since I'd used an HP at work before). But, the Vaio is too expensive, and Sony isn't built on a computer foundation like Compaq is, and the HP's look like plastic toys (the purple and black ones). With the chrome and the DVD/CDRW combo, I couldn't pass it up! Sure, the price is a bit high, but I truly believe that I got my money's worth. I like keeping my reviews updated, so if there are any problems, I will post them here! Update: 6/12/2002 I have had to figure out the hard way that this baby gets HOT very quickly! (If you receive an offer to buy one of those insurance programs, I recommend you do!) After about 2 hours or so, it gets so hot that my wireless network card will actually stop working. It takes about 10 minutes propped up and shut down for it to cool off, but with this amount of time, it can actually go as long as 15 minutes before getting hot again. Kind of hard to use in bed like this, but, hey. So, beware!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description At the heart of the unit lies an AMD Athlon XP-M 2400+ CPU running at a respectable 1.8 GHz and packing 512 KB Level 2 cache. Compaq has complemented this processor with a generous allotment of 512 MB DDR SDRAM (expandable to 1024 MB) and an ATI Mobility Radeon 4X AGP graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory. As such, the unit will efficiently run most common applications but may have problems with complex 3-D games and animation or drawing packages. Sharing the data storage duties is an adequate 40 GB Hard disk and a DVD/CD-RW combo drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive data and watch your favorite movies. In its stock setup, the system will not allow you to record to DVD media. At 12.96 by 10.72 by 1.62 inches and 7.25 pounds, the Presario 2175US is slightly below average size and therefore comfortably portable. The unit is equipped with a large XGA TFT 15-inch display screen capable of crystal clear 1024 by 768 resolution. Other features include two conventional USB 1.1 ports for plug and play peripheral connections (high-speed USB 2.0 ports are not enclosed), an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for fast interaction with devices such as digital camcorders, an 88-key keyboard, a Touch Pad with on/off and dedicated up/down scroll surface, and a pair of internal stereo speakers. Communication options include a 56K modem for low-speed Internet and email access, a high-speed RJ-45 LAN connector and integrated 54g wireless LAN for those times you can't plug in. The bundled software package features Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Money 2003 and Intervideo's Win DVD DVD player. Reviews (4)
The Athlon XP-M 2400+ (Running at 1.79ghz) processor is remarkable. It stands up to a 2.4Ghz Pentium 4 and it flys encoding Mp3s and video. It has PowerNow! technology with adjusts the clock speed acording to the processes. (530mhz idle to 1.79ghz max) You can have it set to 1.79ghz even while idle by changing the power settings to Always On (know that keeping it at this speed increases heat and decreases Battery time) Battery life is average. 3.5 hours idle (running at 530mhz), 1:45 watching a DVD, 1:20 playing games (running at 1.79ghz) The integrated ATI IGP 320M graphics card with up to 128mb shared memory (configarble from 8-128mb in the bios) preforms easily in older games but lacks in todays high-power 3D games. If you look at the recomended specs for a game you want to buy, make sure it doesnt say more than 32mb of video memory recommended. Even though it can have up to 128mb shared video memory it cant make much use of that much memory because of the relativly old and under powered chip. Comes with a VGA port for connecting an external moniter and an S-Video port for connecting to a TV. (NOTE: because of ATI PowerPlay Technology it limits the power of the graphics chip while on battery power, therefore for optimal preformance you must have the laptop connected to AC power. I have tried various stragties to disable to powerplay but have not succedded.) Games playble: (tested by me) Sound is great from these speakers and very clear. It is powered by a Conexant Audio chip. Laptop has headphone and microphone ports and a external volume button. The Tobisha CD-RW/DVD combo drive preformes adquatly. It is rated at 24x read, 8x write, 8x rewrite, 8x read (DVD). But if you open up Easy CD Creator 5 (included with laptop) you will see supported speeds up to 24x write. If you select 24x write it will write at an average at 15x (flucates between 7x and 21x). CD read speed is more like 17x. DVD read speed and CD Re-write untested. Keyboard is OK, keys are large enough for comfort but are not very sensitive, i constanly find my self exerting pressure on the keys. Comes with 2 USB 1.1 ports and 1 IEEE 1394 (firewire) 4-pin port. Serial and parrell ports as well as a PS/2 port are included as well. An intergrated V.92 56K modem and 100mbps network card are inculded. What makes this laptop stand out is the integradted 54g wireless lan (WLAN) Overall this laptop is a remarkable buy, it has great sound and power, but if you want to use this laptop for tommorrows 3D games, get a laptop with a more powerful graphics card.
For those of you who are leary of Compaq computers because of the particular battery quirk with the Evo. That problem is not present here. I have unplugged my computer and then replugged it in and the battery is not charging which means that the battery did not discharge while the computer was off. This was a common problem with the Evo. I would suggest this computer to anyone. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description At 13 by 10.7 by 1.6 inches and a mere 5.7 pounds, the 2105US is easy to carry yet spacious enough to offer an accommodating full-size, 88-key keyboard with embedded numeric keypad and a sizable 14.1-inch XGA TFT display supporting 1,024 x 768 resolution. Compaq has chosen a capable 1.5 GHz Mobile AMD Athlon XP processor to power the unit, and matched it with a generous 512 MB of DDR SDRAM system memory (upgradable to a massive 1,024 MB). It has added a powerful 64 MB ATI Mobility Radeon AGP 4X video processor and a large 40 GB hard drive. Despite its cost-conscious price, the 2105US is ready to handle any typical notebook task and even some 3-D-intensive applications and games. The system is not short of amenities. With the integrated DVD/CD-RW combo drive (24x/8x/8x CD, 8x DVD), you can back up your data, burn and enjoy audio CDs, and play your favorite movies. This laptop has 512MB DDR (64MB DDR shared video memory) and a 40GB hard drive, which are practically top of the line. 512MB DDR is going to make XP run very fast. This laptop is actually faster than my desktop PC which has a XP 2000+/256MB DDR. The 14.1" XGA display is gorgeous. It is crisp and very easy on the eyes, plus it has beautiful colors. It may not be a 15", but being smaller, it will save on your battery life. Performance is awesome, the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive is sweet, battery life is great, and everything is awesome! This laptop is great for you road warriors, since it gets around 3 hours (for real) of battery life, runs very cool, and is rather compact and thin. Everything works great! The Athlon XP-M processor is also going to save you battery life and heat over the Pentium 4-M. AMD has PowerNow! technology, which automatically controls the processor speed in relation to its usage. It can adjust the speed from ~500mhz-1.53ghz. Intel's SpeedStep technology can only operate at two speeds: full-conk and too slow. The XP-M also runs much more cooler than the P4-M. If you notice, the P4-M Presario laptops are much thicker than the XP-M ones. This is due to the P4-M's requirement for extra cooling, which means more heat and more noise. The graphics are ATi IGP320M, which uses the mobility Radeon 7000. It can use up to 128MB DDR shared memory, but 64MB is standard. The graphics are excellent for DX8/DX8.1 gaming (GeForce2 MX performance level), and run every game I have tried so far. The drivers are awesome, and I have not come across any incompatibilities. I even use this laptop for AutoCAD 2004 and 3D Studio Max R5, which are very intensive design programs, and it breezes through all of the applications. The exterior of the laptop is also pretty hardy. The plastic seems tough enough for heavy use, and everything is built sturdily. This thing is built like a tank, and it looks very, very cool. Also, Compaq tech support is excellent, and I have not had any trouble contacting them or finding solutions to problems. They are very knowledgeable and professional in their work. Excellent people I may say! Compaq made an excellent notebook that balances price, mobility, and performance all in one. If you are considering the Compaq Presario 2100 AMD Athlon XP-M laptop, go for it.
