Amazon.com Product Description

Based upon a 2.0 GHz Intel Celeron processor, the Satellite 1135-S155 clearly sports less raw power than its pricier Pentium 4-equipped Satellite counterparts, but Toshiba has matched this CPU with a whopping 512 MB RAM (expandable to 1024 MB), a capable 32 MB Intel 852GM graphics chipset, and an ample 40 GB hard drive. Consequently, the system is quite satisfactory for most common business and personal applications apart from high-end games and 3-D animation packages.

Furthermore, Toshiba has incorporated an array of features normally reserved for mid- to high-end models. The unit's viewing screen, for example, is a comfortably large 15-inch XGA display capable of 1024 by 768 resolution. Its integrated optical drive combines DVD-ROM with CD-RW technology to allow you to backup your data, listen to and burn music CDs and watch the latest movies. The system's keyboard features 85 full-size keys, 12 function keys and a TouchPad pointing device with scroll capability. And if you need future expandability, the Satellite 1135-S155 features two memory slots (both of which may be occupied) and dual PC Card slots.

The long list of connectivity options includes an integrated 56K modem for low-speed e-communications, a 10/100 Ethernet LAN for high-speed Internet and network operations, an S-Video TV-out, a printer port, a microphone and headphone port, and, most impressively, a trio of ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports. The system does not include an IEEE 1394 FireWire connection or high-speed data transfer from external devices such as digital camcorders.

The Satellite 1135-S155 is unexpectedly portable at 13 by 11 by 1.7 inches and just 6.2 pounds. Under ideal conditions, battery life is estimated at three hours. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 stars...for the budget conscious...
This is part of a larger class of laptops running processors slower than 2.4 GHZ that are becoming the targets of deep discounts and rebates now that faster machines are on the move to market. ... This machine painlessly recognized both my home wired and wireless router connections, and I was online in 15 minutes after opening the box. For the price, you can't do better in terms of HDD size (40 GB!) and memory (512MB!!). Three issues: 1. The bundled CD-RW software is goofy and non-inutuitive. Although I was able to use it, I pitched it after two days of trying to figure out it's whacky interface and installed Nero. 2. This is neither ultra-thin or lightweight (6.2 lbs). Since most of my mobile needs take place in car, this is not an issue for me; your mileage my vary if you are hauling your hardware through airports. 3. The heat thing other reviewers talked about: yes, you can feel the warmth on the right side of the touch pad. Frankly, I haven't found a single laptop mouse-equivalent that I like as much as an actual mouse (unless I'm completely veggged on the couch or on a plane, I don't use the touchpad much anyway). I would not consider the heat an issue: most laptops have a hotspot someplace. 4. Battery life is middle-of-the-road...but offers excellent power management tools to give you advance notice of battery loss.

Great performance at this price point...more so if additional rebates are available.

I've used laptops for many years, but this my first personal purchase of one. Toshiba laptops enjoy a good reputation; based on my initial experience with this one, they should. Bottom line: I'd recommend this to my mom if she were in the market for one:-)

4-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba s1551 great laptop for the money
This is an incredible laptop for the money. The screen is good, the battery life is good, it is not too heavy, and the price is great. I got a s1551 for $750 after rebates it has a smaller hard drive 30gig than the s155, but it has a built in wi-fi card and runs xp pro, and has a 64mb integrated video card. I do not feel any heat on my right hand, maybe it is because I have the 30gig drive not the 40gig. Also I don't hear the hard drive clicking like I read in previous reviews. It is fast enough to do most heavy work and multitasking and with 3 usb ports it is very expandable.

The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5 was the video card. It performs okay for most games, but doesn't support Transforming and Lighting and most new games are designed for either a ATI or Nvidia chipset. I knew this going in I am not really a gamer, but in hindsight it would be nice to be able to play some newer games.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Tech Support
Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.

5-0 out of 5 stars perfection at a cheap price
First off, I dont know what all of the fuss is over concerning the issue of the hotspot. I have had this laptop for 8 months now and ive never had an issue with the so called "hotspot." The computer runs great except for the fact that the touchpad freezes occassionally (not the computer, but only the pointer because keyboard can still control the computer). Also the left click on the touchpad has seemed to have gotten stuck. It still functions but does not give the response I need for it, so i just switched the left-right mouse controls. The HD has plenty of space for just about anything (keep in mind its just a laptop). The CD burner is quite quick for a laptop at a great price. I can burn a CD in a few minutes which is not long at all, especially for a laptop. The screen has excellent resolution for a 15" screen on a laptop. I watch dvds not only at home but also on the road and in the air with no complaints on performance. Overall this is an excellent computer for someone that wants a good laptop but doesnt want to pay a great amount. I read the reviews on here before I bought it and they made me a bit hessitent, but I'm glad that I chose this Toshiba. Out of all of the computers I have owned and do own, this is an excellent machine.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT performance
This computer is the best computer for all you people who is in business. It may not be as strong as others, but this is a great computer to store up almost all of your files. It burns CDs very quickly. You can customize it anyway you want. It plays DVDs very quickly, without waiting it to launch the DVD playing program. The LCD screen is very clear. Not a big load to load in the car when your going on a trip. Extrememly portable, easy to carry. It's video card is really good for the important things, but for the unimportant this like games, it is still good, but if you want to play top notch 3D graphic computer games like Halo for PC, it will still work but, the 3D features will be less then it is if you have a top notch video card. It is very reliable to keep all your important, and unimportant files. Has lots of options, runs really quickly, so you don't have to wait for a long time for it to load up microsoft word, or anything. It doesn't have a floppy disc drive though. But it has a big memory space, so you don't have to save it on a floppy disc, you can just write the file on a CD-R or CD-RW. It has 2 PC card drives, about 4 or 5 USB ports, a parellel port, and more. It is very convienient. I recommend this computer to anybody who wants a computer that works just as good or better as the other leading brand, but for a lower price. It's not too fancy if you look at it on the outside, but it is like a house for any files, etc. when you open it up and save it to the memory. It keeps you entertained for hours, DVD, music, internet, etc. It can't burn DVDs, but can burn to Video CD(VCD) or Super Video CD(SVCD). I recommend this computer to anyone, except for people who wants a computer just for gaming. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed to offer a good balance of performance, portability, and price, Toshiba's Satellite 1905-S301 notebook is one more reason why the Satellite series is such a mainstay of Toshiba's extensive notebook lineup.

The 1905-S301 is a powerful computer, but not so powerful that you're forced to pay extra for state-of-the-art components. Driven by a fast 2 GHz Pentium 4 processor, with 256 MB of SDRAM (expandable to 1,024 MB), a fast front-side bus speed of 400 MHz, and a 16 MB ATI M6-P graphics chip, the unit will efficiently handle anything but the most technologically advanced 3-D rendering applications and games. Its large 40 GB hard drive offers plenty of storage space, and its combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive allows you to archive vast quantities of data, play and burn audio CDs, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Toshiba has even included an internal 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for older applications and smaller backup requirements.

Featuring a positional 3-D sound card, an integrated set of stereo speakers, and a generous 15-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display capable of 1,024 x 768 resolution and 16 million colors, the 1905-S301 looks and sounds as good as it runs. The unit is not particularly small at 13.2 by 11.7 by 2 inches and 8.7 pounds, nor is it so cumbersome that you won't want to take it with you across town or across the country.

Wherever you go, the 1905-S301 makes it easy to stay in touch. The system features a wealth of input and output options, including an integrated 56K modem for on-the-road Internet and e-mail access, a 10/100 Ethernet LAN for network connectivity and high-speed surfing, an IEEE 1394 port for super-fast uploads and downloads from DV-based camcorders and other video devices, three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a headphone and microphone jack, and a PC Card slot. The system's control center features an 85-key keyboard, convenient two-button touch pad, a scroll pad, and hot keys.

Toshiba has equipped the 1905-S301 with a bevy of applications, including the Home Edition of Windows XP, Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, and Norton AntiVirus 2002. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A Decent Laptop
I received this computer as an early graduation present in early 2003, and have been fairly happy with it. The processor is a 2ghz P4, and handles anything you could want to do on a laptop very easily and efficiently. I also love the 15" display, which is actually very good for watching DVDs full screen.

One suggestion is that you also purchase a ram upgrade when buying this computer. The 256mb it comes with will probably due if you only intend to use MS Office and other similar applications, but if you're like me and burn CDs regularly with it an upgrade to 512mb would do you a lot of justice.

The video card can also be an issue if you plan on serious gaming with this laptop. With 16mb I can play HalfLife and its mods and Diablo II comfortably, but anything along the lines of EverQuest or UT will be a waste of your effort. It's not upgradable, so you might want to think twice before you buy with intentions to game.

Overall, for the price, I would definitely suggest this laptop. It is a bit heavy and clunky, but with a nice carrying bag it is still very portable, and works very well wireless.

On a related note, I have never had any issues with overheating in this laptop. It's been a year since I got it, and the only time it ever really overheats is when I run a lot of memory hog applications like KaZaa Lite. I regularly leave it on for days during large downloads and experience no trouble.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good features for the price
I purchased this system a little over a year ago and have found it to be an excellent computer for my needs (student). I also bought it to serve as a movie computer that I keep connected to my TV (works great and even goes full screen on the TV automatically). My biggest praise for the system is the fact that it has been knocked off my TV twice, falling at least 4 feet to a hard spanish tile floor without any damage whatsoever (not even a scratch!). Even better, it was in the middle of playing a movie (reading it from the hard drive) and did not skip a beat when it fell.

As for problems, I have noticed a couple that can be annoying. First, the touchpad is kinda sensitive and takes just a little touch to register (which kinda sucks when you are typing away at 80 WPM and the cursor suddenly moves to another part of the document). Second, there is a heat issue that can cause the laptop to shut down in the middle of whatever it is doing, but only seems to happen when dust builds up in the fan or the fan is otherwise blocked. This can be alleviated by blowing the dust out every month or two with a can of air (reversing the air flow). Lastly, if you are looking to play games on this system as well, think again; the graphics card only has 16MB and is non-upgradeable. This is good for simple games like Civilization 3, but Unreal and others are a no-go.

1-0 out of 5 stars Beware before Buying
I bought this computer in December of 2002. I had no problems at all with the computer.

Goods: The computer ran fast with 2.0 Ghz Pentium 4 Processor and 256 mb of Ram. The Hard Drive has plenty of space to hold music, movies, pictures, etc. I love the Dvd/Cd+Rw drive, and built in 3.5 Floppy.

Bads: The fan can be a bit noisy if you plan on leaving your computer on overnight. The video card is small although a Radeon. The size of the computer is terrible it weighs almost 10 pounds, so dont play on taking it anywhere before working out. And WORST of ALL, the fans are not strong enough for the big processor that Toshiba put in the computer. You will be in the middle of a game about to finish, or watching a movie, or in-my-case finishing your HTML website when BOOM it shuts off. You wait a minute, turn the computer back on, and it is normal running fine. But make sure not to run to many programs or open too many windows or you will find yourself staring at a blank screen.

Because of this major problem I called Toshiba. I talked to an Indian who I could barely understand and all she told me was that the only thing she could think it would be was a Defective Processor...Great! I was told to send it to Toshiba. So I did. Last Friday morning I sent my computer to Toshiba. I am still waiting for it to return hopefully fixed. Because of this major problem I would not advise anyone to buy this computer. You will definitely be dissatisfied.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great, unless you like your computer to stay ON
Don't get me wrong, all is not bad with this computer. It is pretty fast, pretty inexpensive, doesn't freeze much, Windows XP is easy and better than Windows 2000, lots of memory, etc. BUT there is a dark, dirty side to this computer as well. If you decide to do too many things at once (for example run Word, WinAmp, and Internet Explorer at the same time) or use the laptop on a soft surface (your lap, your bed, carpet) you might just find that the computer overheats and shuts down. So, say you are a college student writing a final paper or a business executive writing a big proposal or just a video gamer trying to beat that final level, you might just find that *poof* your computer is no longer on! Now, one might say, "well, that's why we buy warranties!", but no, this didn't start happening to me until shortly after my sweet, sweet warranty expired. Woe. ANYWAY, there is a class-action lawsuit in the works against Toshiba regarding the fact that they were producing fans for their laptops that couldn't handle the speeds of the processors they were also using. Needless to say, I am trying to become involved. Until then, I cannot in good faith recommend this model to anyone. Oh, and the Satellite 5005 models do the same thing, from what I've been reading. Happy hunting! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Futuristically styled in a sleek silver chassis, the Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 Notebook PC is a nifty amalgamation of the features most important to the majority of portable computer users. Powerful but not at the expense of added weight and sporting such amenities as integrated wireless connectivity and a widescreen display, this is a great unit for personal, leisure and midlevel business applications.

Measuring 14.1 by 10.6 by 1.4 inches and weighing just 6.2 pounds, the Satellite M35-S320 Notebook is rather wide but comfortably slim and quite portable. Toshiba has based the system on Intel's Centrino technology, whereby three interconnected elements -- an Intel Pentium M CPU (with 1 full MB of Level 2 cache), an Intel 855 chipset, and a cord-free network connection -- work together to keep your notebook lightweight, wirelessly connected, power efficient, and faster than its rated CPU speed might indicate. Driven by a quick 1.5 GHz Pentium M CPU, 512 MB RAM memory (expandable to 2 full GB) and a nVidia GeForce FX graphics controller with 32 MB of dedicated video memory, the unit is ready for most typical 2-D and 3-D tasks, though it may have trouble smoothly displaying the sophisticated 3-D imaging of today's most complex three-dimensional games and graphic design suites.

The system's large 60 GB hard disk offers enough storage space for all your regular data and a substantial library of multimedia files too, and its CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive allows you to listen to and burn audio CDs, archive data to durable digital media, and play DVD movies. DVD burning is not supported. Other welcome amenities include a generous 15.4-inch display in DVD-friendly widescreen 16:9 format, an 85-key keyboard with 12 hotkeys, a TouchPad pointing device with scroll function, and integrated harman/kardon stereo speakers.

With the Satellite M35-S320 Notebook, communication options are virtually limitless. In environments with wired connections, you can select from a 56K dial-up modem or high-speed 10/100 Ethernet LAN. When hardwiring is a problem, you can stay in touch via integrated IntelPRO/Wireless 2100 LAN. Other key components include three fast USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with external plug and play devices such as scanners and digital cameras, an S-Video TV--out, and an infrared port for wireless communication with PDAs and the like. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Oh lord!!
Toshiba Satellite M35-S320 doesn't dissapoint me at all. Centrino really works, allowing me to keep on working for hours. The battery can last up to 3.5 hrs and it can work well despite the heat that is building up!! have fun watching movies and playing games!!! the only bad thing: the volume is too soft whille watching movie and a bit too big and heavy!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm glad I went big
It was time to upgrade and I thought I wanted one of those mini laptops, you know the ones so small they don't even have an optical drive. Well I found one, the sony vaio v505, that did. However I ended up going for the toshiba machine because I realized that I would be using it as much or more at a central site than on the road. I am in med school and travel to different cities for weeks at a time for rotations. I need the portability of a laptop, but like the convenience of something nice to look at, enter the widescreeen. In a word it is magnificent. The notebook itself is very thin and although you feel the weight in your bag, it is not cumbersome. The things I like best about this laptop are its screen, sleek look, but more importantly great processor speed and good battery life. The utility config free is great and makes it a snap to connect to the internet, truly config free. The wifi is great too, my first run-in with them so no basis for comparison. I am rarely somewhere that I don't have an outlet, funny how most hospitals need electricity, so I carry the power cord, I wish they made a more portable version, and my travel mouse, I hate touch pads. The sound from the built in speakers is good, they don't sound tinny and don't break up at louder volumes, but don't forget they are less than an inch in diameter.

I do have a list of nit picky negatives, it's just the way my mind works, and I am also very wary of a review that has no negatives. First it could be lighter, but you could say that about any laptop. Secondly, I wish there were more usb ports, it has 3 all on the right side. You can buy one of those port splitters, but again its a laptop and too much bulk gets you away from the reason you bought one in the first place. Next, the IR port is on the front, and while I haven't needed to use it for a printer it seems an odd place to put it. Probably on either side near the back would be better. Finally, it doesn't come with Office 2003, you can buy it for $149, but then the value for the system comes down a little bit.

Overall, this computer is a do-it-all all-star. If you want to play games it handles them with ease, if you want to watch movies the widescreen is unusually good at it, if you want to write a research paper and have the accompanying PP presentation on the effects of lispro on gestational diabetes you can do that too. It works on the road and as a desktop too. I am very happy with it and am glad I went big!

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome Desktop Replacement
When it was time to replace my old Gateway desktop, I began the task of researching brands and products. As another reviewer said, I was drawn to Toshiba by their low repair history. I had horrible experience with resolution of any issue using Gateway support (their advice was always uninstall everything and see if it works), and immediately knocked them off my list. My old IBM laptop is also extinct and parts are so expensive ($250 for a battery???) so they were off the list as well.

I am very happy with this computer. I have eliminated my desktop and gained a better display, larger hard drive and overall great product.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great package, reliable brand
Got this laptop a week ago and I just love it. Being a computer nut, and a computer programmer, I had to pick a machine that would work well with my tasks. So far this one is handling the processor-intensive tasks I need very well. After realizing that I had been working on my old Pentium III 900MHz 512MB desktop for more than three years and still not feeling the urgent need to upgrade that one, I concluded that I'll probably use this laptop as a full replacement for my old warrior and not need to upgrade laptops in a long time.
The main factor when I decided for the Toshiba after comparing different brands was the reliability and reputation of this brand. Seriously, everytime I take some equipment (TVs VCRs, etc) for service at the retail store I notice the high number of HP and Sony Vaio laptops piling up the shelves. After Compaq merger with HP, and seeing their models similiarities, I'm now scared of Compaqs too. I took Dell out of the contest because of a personal bad experience with tech support and bad drivers I got in the past. All this, combined with the great price and package made it almos a no-brainer for me.
One thing that would make this one even better would be a multi-card-format reader instead of the SD-only reader. But I can live without that with my USB flash drive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent laptop and reasonable price
The laptop is just too good. Excellent audio and video and makes up a good cinemascope screen and good theater like environment for watching DVDs.
Connects to wi-fi network with ease.
Portability also good but some may not like the 15" WXGA screen which makes the laptop look lil big but then if you go for a lesser screen you clearly lose the clarity.
Keyboard is springy and not hard like other laptops but I would buy an additional set of mouse and keyboard.
I found the DVD drive to be too gentle and sometimes fear if that would come out if I use a bit of force.
Overall it is my dream machine and hope it would be the same for you too.

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
An excellent entry-level portable computer for students or "notebook lite" for businesspeople, the Toshiba Satellite A65-S1065 Notebook PC delivers adequate speed, wireless communication and plenty of storage space at a favorable price point. If you want to play games, burn DVDs, or impress your friends with raw power, you'll want to explore one of Toshiba's other models, but for basic computing such as word processing, finances, Internet/email and CD burning, the Satellite A65-S1065 is up to the task without breaking the bank.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, though these machines are usually noticeably larger and more power hungry than their less powerful counterparts. Intel's cost-effective Celeron processor often forms the basis for budget-priced machines, and the Satellite A65-S1065 is no different. A 2.8 GHz Celeron powers the unit, delivering sufficient speed and power for general duty but not enough for serious multitasking, super-sophisticated business apps or the latest games. Power users would do well to check into Pentium 4-powered notebooks.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM). More RAM means faster computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite A65-S1065 incorprates 512 MB of RAM, the bare minimum for the vast majority of today's notebooks and not enough for efficient multitasking. The unit does allow you to increase the amount of RAM to 1280 MB, but at extra cost.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon 7000 IGP with 64 MB of shared video memory. The Radeon name is highly regarded in video technology, and indeed this system and this chipset will efficiently deal with 2D graphics and do a reasonable job with simple 3D visuals such as those found in older games and entry-level 3D animation. However, it will not competently display the latest high-end 3D computer games and the like.

Display
The unit's 15-inch TFT active matrix display is standard for midlevel notebooks. It is not a widescreen display such as those found in some of today's more pricey units, and therefore does not offer the panoramic perspective favored for movies. Its highest supported resolution of 1024 by 768 is also standard.

Hard Disk
The Satellite A65-S1065 features a solid 60 GB of hard disk space. This amount of data storage is surprising in a notebook at this price range, providing enough room for general applications and files and a small library of music or multimedia files too.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive that supports all of the above apart from DVD recording.

Audio
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound through its two stereo speakers.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard with HotKey function and a TouchPad pointing device.

Connectivity and Expansion
The Satellite A65-S1065 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an RJ-45 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated wireless LAN for cordless e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, and a TV-out port. An IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders) is not included.

Operating System and Software
Toshiba has fitted the system with today's most widely accepted operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition.

Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Satellite A65-S1065 is considered average by today's standards, at 13.2 by 11.7 by 1.9 inches and 7.7 lbs.

Power
The system is equipped with an 8-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that delivers 1.5 hours between charges. This is not particularly efficient when compared with notebooks making use of Intel's Centrino technology and Pentium M processor, and is just slightly less than average even for most entry-level notbooks. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Similar to Toshiba's stunning P25 series of desktop replacement notebooks but sporting a lighter, more portable chassis, slightly downgraded components and a more affordable price point, the Satellite P15 series is an excellent solution for power-hungry business and personal users and multimedia fans who can't financially justify absolute top-of-the-line gear. This model, the Satellite P15-S420, is the midrange model in the P15 series, and thus strikes a perfect balance between performance and price.

Those who enjoy the perks of a full-featured stationary PC will find plenty to like in the Satellite P15-S420. For starters, Toshiba fitted the unit with a sizeable 15.4-inch widescreen display screen capable of dazzling 1280 by 800 resolutions. It added a super-spacious 80 GB hard disk spinning at a snappy 4200 RPM and enclosed a versatile DVD Multi Drive through which you can not only watch the latest Hollywood releases, but also burn your own home movies to DVD media and utilize both DVD+ and DVD- formats.

Moreover, the unit is fast -- faster in fact than the majority of desktops. Driving the Satellite P15-S420 is a potent 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with a scorching 800 MHz system bus clock speed and Hyper-Threading Technology for more efficient CPU usage. Working in conjunction with this CPU are a generous 512 MB allotment of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to a full 2048 MB) and an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics chipset with 32 MB of dedicated video memory. Thusly, the system will handle most anything you can throw at it, be it 2D or 3D in nature, though its display may slow some when trying to render high-end 3D games. Diehard gamers who want more powerful 3D capabilities and an even larger display screen should investigate Toshiba's Satellite P25 series.

Other critical features include an IEEE 1394 Fire Wire port for fast interaction with devices such as digital camcorders, a trio of high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals such as scanners or external drives, one PC Card slot supporting the Type II card format, and an impressive variety of interior and exterior one-touch controls. Communication facilities include 802.11a/g wireless networking, 10/100 Ethernet LAN and an integrated 56K modem.

Measuring 14.2 by 10.8 by 1.7 inches and tipping the scales at 8 pounds, the Satellite P15-S420 is substantially smaller and two pounds lighter than models in the more powerful, more expensive P25 series. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Intuit Quicken New User's Edition 2004, Microsoft Works, and InterVideo's WinDVD Creator Plus. Battery life is average at 2.0 hours. ... On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Satellite A65-S1064 is considered average by today's standards, at 13.2 by 11.7 by 1.9 inches and 7.7 lbs.

Similar to Toshiba's stunning P25 series of high-end notebooks but sporting a smaller profile, marginally downgraded components and a more affordable price point, the Satellite P15 series is a good solution for power-hungry users who just don't want the added weight and expense of a full-blown mobile "desktop replacement". This particular unit, the top-of-the-line Satellite P15-S470, features upscale amenities such as DVD burning, wireless networking, a wide-screen display and more than enough graphics power to handle many of today's most demanding 3D games.

Though not nearly as petite as some of today's ultra-light notebooks, the P15-S470 is nevertheless comfortably portable at 14.2 by 10.8 by 1.7 inches and just 8 lbs. Inside, Toshiba has equipped the unit with a potent 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor featuring Intel Hyper-Threading Technology for more efficient CPU usage. The system's power section also features a lightning fast 800 MHz bus, 512 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to a full 2048 MB) and an NVIDIA GeForce FX Go5200 graphics controller with a very useful 64 MB of dedicated (not shared) video memory. Even in this stock configuration, the system will handle most anything you can throw at it, be it 2D or 3D in nature.

The P15-S470 sports a sizeable 15.4-inch widescreen display screen capable of dazzling 1280 by 800 resolutions. With this widescreen format, you can watch DVD movies the way they were intended, without black borders or chopped images. The system's 60 GB hard drive is quite large for a portable computer, and its versatile DVD-R/-RW/CD-RW optical drive allows you to listen to and burn audio CDs, archive your data, watch DVD movies, record home videos to DVD format, and utilize both DVD+ and DVD- formats.

Other critical features include an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for fast interaction with devices such as digital camcorders, a trio of high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals such as scanners or external drives, an S-Video TV-out, two memory slots (both of which may be simultaneously occupied), and an impressive variety of interior and exterior one-touch controls. Communication facilities include 802.11wireless networking, 10/100 Ethernet LAN and an integrated 56K modem.

Toshiba has loaded the P15-S470 with a solid roster of software that includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition operating system, Intuit Quicken New User's Edition 2004, Microsoft's Works 7.0 productivity suite, and a variety of multimedia and Internet utilities. Maximum battery life expectancy is average at approximately 2 hours. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

For multimedia users on the go, Toshiba offers the Satellite 5105-S501 notebook. Designed for cutting edge audio-video performance and speedy computing in any situation, the 5105-S501 isn't quite as well equipped (or as expensive) as its bigger brother, the top-of-the-line 5105-S607, but nevertheless will comfortably accommodate anyone who regularly pushes the capabilities of their portable computer.

The 5105-S501 packs a lot of goodies into its 13-by-11.6-by-1.8-inch, 7-pound frame. At the heart of the system lies a 1.7 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with 512 KB of Level 2 cache. Toshiba has paired this potent processor with a massive 512 MB of PC2100 DDR SDRAM and a large 5,400 RPM, 40 GB hard drive to ensure speeds remain fast even during the most stressful moments.

One of the most critical bottlenecks in many portable computers occurs when data moves from the processor to the viewing screen, but that simply isn't an issue with the 5105-S501. Toshiba has equipped the unit with an nVidia GeForce4 440 Go graphics controller with 32 MB of 220 MHz DDR VRAM. This powerful video chip will not only handle all your business applications efficiently, but most games and high-end 3-D rendering programs as well.

If you'd like to watch a movie or listen to a few tunes, the 5105-S501 has you covered there too. Using its multifunction DVD/CD-RW drive, you can play a movie or a CD, burn your own audio disc, or archive your data. No matter what you do, the system's generous Toshiba Personal Theatre 15-inch SVGA+ active-matrix display will capably display your images at resolutions up to 1,400 x 1,050. Its Yamaha audio processor generates high-quality 2-D and 3-D signals, and its Harman Kardon stereo subwoofer system delivers surprisingly rich sound.

The unit's keyboard section is second to none, featuring 85 full-size keys, 12 one-touch Internet and multimedia buttons, and a monochrome LCD cPad touch pad that graphically displays important functions and incorporates several convenient secondary applications. The system features a wide variety of connections, including three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for high-speed data transfer from external video devices such as DV camcorders, an infrared and NTSC/PAL port, two multipurpose PC card slots, a SmartMedia slot, and an S/PDIF optical jack. 10/100 Ethernet network support and a built-in 56K modem help keep you in touch with Internet and e-mail services in any situation.

Toshiba has fitted the 5105-S501 with a surplus of popular software, including Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and several multimedia and communication tools and utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great laptop
I purchased this computer in July as a replacement for my elderly Sony Vaio. I initially looked at the Sony laptops, but was not pleased with them; they were not as high quality as the one I previously owned. Then, I looked at the Toshiba notebooks...I have been happy with mine ever since. It is a powerful beast with an appitite for work. I've thrown every kind of application at it, many of wich would make some desktop computers bog down, but this soldier grits through it! DVD's are great on it. The only two minor problems with it are that the remote (cd/dvd/mp3 functions)will only work with the Toshiba Media Player and not any other (Windows media, etc.), and the other problem is that linking the computer to a TV (for DVDs) may give you issues (apparently you can't have the display and the TV receive a picture at the same time off the DVD player). Also, it can be a pain to have only USB ports, and no printer port (not a problem if you have a newer printer or don't plan on using a xerox Phaser with serial and network functions only!)...can be cured with an adapter. All around great machine!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the money
Originally, I bought a notebook from a different manufacturer. When it broke after a week of use, I exchanged it for this Toshiba. The Toshiba was ... more expensive... money well spent, as the Toshiba is much better.

The screen is extremely bright and clear, with wide viewing angles. Its high resolution is a definite plus if you're into graphics or spreadsheets. DVDs look very good (better than on my desktop computer), with no pixelization in most movies. The HK speakers provide the best sound I've heard from a notebook. The keyboard has a good typing feel to it. You can use the handy remote control for DVD functions, the Toshiba Media Player, and basic power-on and locking. That 3rd USB port means you won't have to switch cables as often. Cosmetically, the muted metallic blue casing looks better than standard black.

Downsides? The notebook is huge. Its depth prevents it from fitting in many computer bags. It doesn't have a parallel port, the audio/video in/out uses minijack-to-RCA cables, and the USB is only 1.1. Nothing too major.

Everyone I've shown the Toshiba to has been impressed, mainly by the screen and the remote. Although its asking price is [more], it's fast, has a big screen, lots of RAM, and a big harddrive. This notebook has exceeded my expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The best laptop I have ever had. Never ever had a problem. I would buy it again, and again, and again...

2-0 out of 5 stars After you buy it, you're on your own...
My Toshiba Satellite lasted a little over a year before hardware began to fail ("blue screen of death", CDR/W would no longer write, etc). Fortunately, the system came with system recovery disks (Symantic Ghost), but having to ghost the hard drive three times in the last two months seemed impractical. Device drivers are non-existant and Toshiba online support is pathetic - a constant, mindnumbing circle of useless websites.
Definitely my last Toshiba... and this one is soon to be scrapped.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost great
I purchased this laptop to replace my Compaq Presario 1600s. The Toshiba's low battery life is of little concern to me because I seldom need to use the laptop in a place without an ac outlet. While some reviewers do not like the heat generated by the Toshiba laptop, I find it comparable to the heat generated by the Compaq laptop.

At its native resolution, the 5105-s501's screen is sharp, bright, and beautiful with excellent viewing angles. One day I was in a computer store and the 5105-s501 happened to be next to its sucessor, the 5205-s503. Ironically, the colors of the s501 screen were much richer than the s503 counterpart; the s503 seemed to have inferior viewing angles with slightly washed out colors.

The s501's speakers are extremeley loud and clear, but are not as rich and distortion-free as the JBL Pro speakers found in older Compaq laptops. When the volume is at maximum, the subwoofer literally causes the keyboard to vibrate and distort the sound. Fortunately at such settings, one's ears can really hurt and one would be forced to lower the volume anyway, thus (mostly) avoiding the subwoofer vibration problem. Still, low frequency distortions can be heard on certain DVD movies like Star Wars Episode I even at mid-range volumes. These distortions do not exist at any volume range when watching DVDs on my old Compaq laptop.

Except for the clicks that remind me of instant messaging event sounds and cricket chirps (yes, I thought that there were crickets outside!), the s501's hard drive is extremeley silent. The fan is loud the first moments when it is turned on, but after these first moments, it is relatively quiet. ... Read more

If you're looking for a notebook that can handle entertainment and multimedia without breaking the bank, the Toshiba Satellite 1805-S253 is worth a look. It includes a DVD-ROM drive and 14.1-inch active-matrix display for watching movies or playing games, yet its price is at the lower end of the notebook spectrum. The system's processor is a Pentium III running at a reasonable 850 MHz; the unit also comes with 128 MB of memory, a 15 GB hard disk drive, and modem and networking support. The installed operating system is Windows Me, Microsoft's consumer-oriented platform; Lotus SmartSuite and Quicken Basic 2001 are included as well. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I HATE IT! I HATE IT! I HATE IT!
When my parents bought me the satellite for my 17th birthday i was so excited since it was my first personal notebook. Now i am 19 and have suffered the last two years with this peice of junk. I don't even know where to start...first it randomly shuts down for no apparent reason. It constantly locks up when using the internet, my screen freaks out randomly at least a couple times a year to the point where it literally wont show an image, the speakers suck, it's slow as hell and i can't even remember everything else that is wrong with it.
On top of all of this Toshiba itself sucks in the customer service department. My father is now on their "beware of customer" list because he continually calls when the damn thing breaks down and ends up getting people who don't speak english and don't understand anything he is trying to explain. I promise you he and I are both fully capable of explaining a problem. Toshiba's solution has been multiple times to send the computer in for fixing - which i have done at least four times over the last two years.
- One example of Toshiba's poor service: I sent the computer in to fix a dimming screen and on their service sheet, i boldy stated NO to refragmenting becuase of all the saved work i had on it. Well they refragmented it, lost all my work over the last year, and on top of it as my luck would turn the back up CD i had didnt work. Though the CD part was my mistake, i was devestated considering Toshiba shouldn't have lost the work in the first place.
The other reason i hate this thing is that being a college freshmen i have to rely entirely on my computer. SO low and behold this thing decides not to show images on my screen two weeks before my final exams. I was forced to box it up and send it to a repair shop ASAP, in which the computer wasn't returned to me for over a week.
Thanks to Toshiba, i am forever turned off of Toshiba computers. i will never in my ENTIRE LIFE purchase a product from their company and i suggest to those reading this that they do the same. On top of it i am worried that Toshiba has completely turned me away from PCs which i have so dilegently used the last few years...looks like Apple has a new customer. THANK YOU TOSHIBA!

1-0 out of 5 stars A piece of junk
I kick myself every time I try to use this worthless piece of frustration. I hate it. It shuts down all the time. The sound card doesn't work. Half the time, when it boots up, the screen is black. Keep rebooting, and eventually, it will display and image. I hate it. I hate Toshiba products. I will never ever buy another one. And, of course, all this started immediately after it was out of warranty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Manufactured with known defect
It seems that toshiba manufactured these machines with a known defect in which the CPU needs to be throttled back in order to keep the laptop from shutting down due to over heating. The cause of this issue is that Toshiba used a desktop CPU (Intel Pentium III) instead of a mobile CPU in these laptops. Toshiba's solution to the problem is a BIOS update which effectively throttles back the clock speed of the CPU and causes some issues with DVD playback. This defect is also present in the satellite 5505 series laptops.

1-0 out of 5 stars BIOS is NOT the problem
Hey all- I have been following the class-action suit against Toshiba RE: random shut-offs and wanted to correct something that another reviewer asserted. In the "one bad apple..." review, the reviewer asserts that the BIOS fixes offered by Toshiba will correct this problem. This is a truth wrapped in falsehood. The BIOS fix WILL prevent this problem from occuring, but it is because it prevents your computer from running at its advertised speed. To say this is a solution is insane. All it suggests is that you should have bought a cheaper, slower computer to begin with. Do NOT confuse the BIOS fix as a real fix. Do not buy this computer. Also, do not buy a Satellite 5005-series or 1900-series. Same deal. Viva le lawsuit!

1-0 out of 5 stars Just a note...
I am one of many with the famous Toshiba laptop overheat-and-shut-down problems. I just wanted to point out- since someone dismissed this problem as being easily correctible- it is NOT. updating BIOS was a clever trick by Toshiba to deflect the problem- not fix it. The BIOS fix merely SLOWS your computer down so that the processer produces less heat. However, it means that the user wasted a lot of money on a fast chip they cannot use. do not buy this computer (or the 1900 series) and expect to run it at the speed you were promised. Hell it may not run at all. Mine shuts down when i load some acrobat files, use Word, burn Cds, etc. i'm furious! right now, as I type, I have TWO ice packs on this piece of plastic and yet it has already shut-off twice in the last hour. I'm not kidding. this is not a whiny-- why isn't my computer perfect?-- complaint. I cannot use many Cd-roms, I cannot watch dvds AT ALL (meaning $ wasted on that drive), I cannot watch streaming video. I cannot even write a term paper without expecting a shut-off or two. No joke. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Designed to offer a good balance of performance, portability, and price, Toshiba's Satellite 2405-S201 notebook is one more reason why the Satellite series is such a mainstay of Toshiba's extensive notebook lineup.

The 2405-S201 is a powerful computer, but not so powerful that you're forced to pay extra for state-of-the-art components. Driven by a fast 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 processor, with 256 MB of SDRAM (expandable to 512 MB), a fast front-side bus speed of 400 MHz, and a 16 MB TriStar 64C+ graphics chip, the unit will efficiently handle anything but the most technologically advanced 3-D rendering applications and games.

Featuring a positional 3-D sound card, an integrated set of stereo speakers, and a generous 14.1-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display capable of 1,024 x 768 resolution and 16 million colors, the 2405-S201 looks and sounds as good as it runs. The unit is not particularly small at 12.8 by 11.2 by 1.7 inches and 7.54 pounds, nor is it so cumbersome that you won't want to take it with you across town or across the country.

Wherever you go, the 2405-S201 makes it easy to stay in touch. The system features a wealth of input and output options, including an integrated 56K modem for on-the-road Internet and e-mail access, a 10/100 Ethernet LAN for network connectivity and high-speed surfing, three USB ports for plug-and-play peripherals, a headphone and microphone jack, and a PC Card slot. The system's control center features an 85-key keyboard, convenient two-button touch pad, a scroll pad, and hot keys.

Toshiba has equipped the 2405-S201 with a bevy of applications, including the Home Edition of Windows XP, Lotus SmartSuite Millennium Edition, Intuit Quicken Basic 2001, and Norton AntiVirus 2002. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, value-priced machine
I bought this machine for both work and school. I'm running RedHat Linux (7.3) on one partition and XP on the other. First of all, anyone buying this machine should bear in mind that it does _not_ have a mobile processor. Therefore, as the other reviewers pointed out, it gets very hot. However, Toshiba corrected earlier problems with the processor overheating so the new cooling system works very well.

The extras on this machine are great: three USB ports, a firewire port, and the SD slot. For the money you will _not_ find a better configuration. I checked Dell, IBM, Sony, and Gateway, all of which barely came close to what the Toshiba has. The 15" monitor is fantastic as are the speakers.

Drawbacks? Of course. Again, it's not really a "laptop" because of the heat it generates. Also, the function buttons on the front of the machine are not intuitive or well-designed so you really have to squint to see what's on each of them. The ~ key is poorly placed (I'm a Linux geek and the ~ key is important--more of a personal gripe than anything else). Lastly, the battery life is mediocore.

However, if you do your homework you'll see that there's no other machine on the market that comes close to the config of this machine.

4-0 out of 5 stars So your thinking about the Toshiba 2405-S201 laptop....
I've use many different brands of laptops, but if you are looking for a laptop that has power as well as performance, then this one is a pretty good choice for a reasonable price.

It comes with:
1)A P4 1.6GHZ processor (not the mobile version - which runs cooler)

2)256MB of memory (however, it is PC2100 DDR RAM, which is basically much faster memory than your conventional SODIMM memory you will find on a lot of other manufacturer's laptops.) However, I increased the amount of memory to 512MB, which is the maximum amount that this laptop can handle.

3)30GB HDD, which is a pretty good size hard drive - as oppose to some other laptops you see at similar prices with only a 20GB HDD.

4)8X DVD/ 8X CDRW drive/ 24X CD ROM reader

5)16MB Integrated S3 Controller Video adapter which is pretty decent, but some 3D games do not function as well compared to ATI or NVIDIA chips.

6)And of course your typical 56K modem and built in 10/100 NIC.

Those are the basic specs.

The positives are:
Features included and Price especially the built in DVD and CDRW player; PC2100 DDR memory; 30GB HDD; 3 USB Ports; 14.1" monitor; haven't had to call, but 24/7 tech support; volume control and extra one touch buttons are convenient; RCA video output port; can replace your desktop PC - or at least a replacement for your older desktop PC.

The negatives are:
Slightly heavy - but still manageable; Runs hot if you have on your lap but O.K.; Battery life is about average at about 1:30-2HRS.; No PS/2 ports; Trackpad is finicky; software included is weak - need MS Office, or at least MS Word; XP Home (instead of XP Pro - which you have to pay more for and hard to find); No built in microphone; SD memory slot reader - but more useful if it was a Smartmedia or CompactFlash instead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good prize
My computer is about 1 year and 3 months old; thus lasting longer than an old Gateway desktop; that only lasted about a year. I like that it has a dvd/cdrw drive, pentium 4, 256 mb ram.

The good: dvd/cdrw, 16 mb pc card, touch pad is very good for me, since i have small hands and it copes well with other people using the touchpad. The touchpad movement changes according to user. Cd and manual are very useful. The 3 usb ports are very good when you want to connect a printer, a web cam and pen drive. You could also use a video cable to connect it to a tv/monitor/projector and watch movies. The keys are very good for the way I type and I like the scroller, because I don't have to use the up and down keys. You have many features that are good for its prize. The speakers are very good. I've seen movies in my room and the speakers sound very good; but try not to put it maximum volume.

concerns: microphone and earphone "holes" are in front, which sometimes is sometimes irritating when I have the laptop on my lap. It gets hot at times, but the fan seems to reduce the heat and it allows the computer to stay up longer; however, it doesn't freeze as much as other desktops. In actuality it probably only freezes about ones a week or more. Sometimes that occurs because of the website or I have to many programs running. Windows xp home edition, I mostly prefer professional because it contains an internet server and more tools. You also need to buy microsof office or any other word processing software. the computer is somewhat heavy, but you could deal with it.

Other than those learning experiences it has worked way better than my desktop computer that I bought the year before my laptop and it cost me, 300 and 250 three year guarantee for any hardware repairs, more than my gateway desktop. The quarantee allows you to replace the battery without paying for it, saving about 250 dollars.

customer servive: Please read your quarantee contract, because they only help you with hardware problems not software.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great desktop replacement
This is a reasonably priced desktop alternative - NOT a mobile workstation. You'll strain your shoulders if you carry it around for more than a few minutes as it weighs a heavy 7.5 lbs. Aside from that, there is little that you'd feel lacking in this big performer with awesome muscle and features. The fan is quiet and the performance of the laptop is awesome.

I have had it for more than 6 months now and the only - point aside from the weight that bothers me is Windows XP Home - it cant run Microsoft IIS, which I really need to use. I am selling this because of this problem. (I need Win 2K or Win XP Prof).

The screen is bright and crisp and I haven't yet had a single dead pixel. The speakers are placed cleverly near the hinge of the screen to aim directly at your ears. The touchpad is sometimes annoying when it just copies text (Word) or goes back to previous page (IE) and so on and you will have a hard time when this happens several times in a row as it did today for me.
DVDs play great and the screen catches up fast with the action on the disk and movies are a delight to watch because of the 16 MB graphics memory.

All in all, except for the Win XP Home issue, I love this laptop and would definitely recommend it. ... Read more

No joke. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice!
The Toshiba 3005 is a full-featured, powerful notebook computer that is relatively lightweight, has a compact easily portable size, and a reasonable cost. This is my fourth laptop, and is by far my most satisfying choice to date. A notebook computer should be truly portable, which means that it must have decent battery life, be light and easy to lug around, and be truly self-contained and full-featured. The Toshiba 3000/3005 series notebook computer perfectly fills all of these requirements.

The smart media card reader is incredibly useful if you happen to have other digital hardware that shares these media cards. I can just pop the card out of my Olympus digital camera, slide it into my Toshiba notebook, where it immediately appears as a disk drive, and then just quickly drag files over for viewing. The smart media card is fully accessible as a standard disk drive. The built-in fax/modem, 10/100 Ethernet, IR port, two PCMCIA card slots, three powered USB ports, and one unpowered firewire port, give me nearly all of the connectivity that I need. I do wish that Toshiba had chosen to include a legacy serial port, since my Earthmate GPS receiver and mapping software requires an RS232c port, and I would have preferred not to have to lug around a USB converter. I also wish that my Toshiba had an optionally available internal WiFi wireless network card and built-in antenna. I use a PCMCIA card for that purpose, but would have appreciated being able to eliminate the protruding antenna.

The keyboard and touchpad work fine. The speakers are adequate for personal listening and are positioned for surprisingly good stereo separation. The CD/DVD/Media player controls work well and are perfectly positioned to be accessible with the notebook lid open or closed. It makes for a rather expensive CD player, but it is nice to be able to listen to music even without powering up the CPU and hard drive. The large hard disk drive has been great for handling digital video transferred from my camcorder via the firewire port, and has also allowed me the luxury of storing a library of many hundreds of MP3s for musical enjoyment without having to carry any CDs when I travel. The DVD player and CD writing capabilities work as advertised, and this is my first notebook that can easily play a feature length movie and still give me an hour or so of work time on a single battery. Also notable was the excellent glitch-free quality of DVD playback even while on battery power. And for you game players, I am truly impressed with the performance of the NVIDIA GeForce2 graphics subsystem of this machine. I have Half-Life loaded on the hard disk, and have been provided with many hours of very enjoyable game play. There are very few notebook computers that offer this excellent graphic chip, and even fewer in this price range, and compact lightweight size.

All-in-all, a great machine... feature packed, lightweight and compact, reasonably priced, solidly built, and incredibly powerful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific laptop for a terrific price
I spent a ton of time doing research for laptops, and this model (3005-S307) won for having the best features and at the lowest price. I looked at all the other brands, dell, hp, sony, compaq, but feature for feature, they were not matched by this machine in a similar price range. All the glowing reviews this machine received are accurate. I was a little worried because there were complaints also about the machine, but fortunately, the issues they talked about are so minor, that it's not really a problem at all.

I've been using this laptop as my main work computer now for almost 3 months. That means it's on 12 hours every single day, and is being pushed hard. So far it has been awesome, and has performed well beyond my expectations. I'm totally thrilled with my purchase, and I don't remember the last time I felt that way about any computer purchase.

As to answering the complaints: Yes, the hard drive does occasionally click but it really doesn't bother me at all, and most of the time I don't even notice it. The machine does get fairly warm, but I've yet to own a laptopt that did not.

My biggest complaint is there's no ps/2 port, so you need a usb mouse and keyboard if you use it on your desktop like I do. Hardly a big deal these days as both are very cheap to come by.

So if you want a terrific machine at a terrific price this is the machine to get.

4-0 out of 5 stars The toshiba satelite 3005 /WI-FI is a very nice linux box!
I have recently accuired a toshiba 3005 and i was and am still shocked of the options and little things toshiba have put in to the 3005 satellite.Mine has the firewire, removable DVD/CDR which is x8 speed write mode,Smartmedia reader,s-video out for the real tech junkies,3USB ports dual monitor capibilities,WI-FI(802.11B)ethernet and all the little buttons that i will probably never use.I am a LINUX user and i have had very few problems with anything. The sound card could of been a little higher class but i broke mine so i'm looking into something more high performance and better sound quality.I don't have much more to write other than i am very pleased i purcased this laptop. thanx for reading my review

3-0 out of 5 stars Great Laptop for the price! (But i returned mine)
Okay, well all the positive parts of this laptop have been told so i'll be negative and concentrate on the cons. (keep in mind im comparing it to the compaq 1720us i returned and my old gateway 3150XL)

Con:
-Heat. This gets a bit warm. Especially compared to the compaq with the same processor

-Hard Drive. I read the complaints and they are right. Click click click. Its really annoying and is a major part of why i got rid of it. The compaq is so super quiet its amazing. Like when you hear a new car and cant tell if the engine is on or not

-Video Out. I dont know if this is standard but you have to reduce your laptop screen to 800x600 to do video out to a TV. The compaq didnt require any resizing so i played counterstrike on TV. Cool!

Pro:
-GeForce2Go in this thing is great but that 800x600 out is the other reason why i am getting rid of this.

-Great trackpad. much better than the compaqs

-8X DVD is very cool

5-0 out of 5 stars A satisfied customer with a few questions
The Toshiba Satellite 3005-S307 is a solid all around notebook. I did a lot of research before buying a replacement for a very old Toshiba Tecra laptop. The specs really can not be beat for the price by any other manufacturer. ... I have had the computer for a roughly a week now, so I am a little more familiar with its workings. The computer has performed flawlessly with excellent DVD playback and long battery life. In addition the computer has a well put together feel to it. My only concern has been a faint ticking noise from the hard drive that persists after the drive accesses especially while surfing the internet. ... Other than this small concern the computer has been wonderful. Highly recommended and an unsurpassed value in notebook computers. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More than decent beginner/cheap laptop
This is a great laptop for the value. If you get a deal with rebates then you can come out real good on price... I am not sure of Amazon.com's deal. But as for the price, is still a great deal. Especially for me, I am a college student who needs a decent mobile system on top of my desktop system at home. Comes with a built in network interface and modem (not that I'll ever use that really). All I need to do is add a wireless network card and I am done.

My only problem with it is the missing built in floppy drive and a TV out adaptor. Other than that, its a great laptop. I don't need a CD-RW on my laptop I have that angle covered and I enjoy having a DVD-ROM (if anything I must have DVD capability). It would have been nice to make atleast one of those USB ports an IEEE 1394 firewire port. But other than those three major draw backs it again is a nice system. Microsoft Works isn't that bad. It is cross compatible with the Office software package. The 1.5GHz celeron is perfect, and 256MB of ram makes this thing even better. I LOVE IT! Pick one up. . . .

3-0 out of 5 stars Is it worth your money ?
This is notebook model from Toshiba for first time laptop buyers looking a value priced notebook. Read ahead to decide whether you want this or not.

Let me give 12 reasons to buy it,
1. You want a laptop.
2. You don't have much money to spend.
3. You don't care about its 45 mins battery life.
4. You don't want or don't care for top performance.
5. You have never heard of USB 2.0 or Firewire or Bluetooth.
6. You don't care for the noise or heat it will generate.
7. You don't care about system instability and overheating problems it may have.
8. You don't care for graphics performance or play any PC games.
9. You don't want to burn a CD for mp3 or data backup's.
10. You don't care about its 7 pound weight or big size or medium sized 14" display.
11. You don't care about irritating and noisy Hard Disk and CPU fans.
12. You are a student and will install Linux on it anyways !

Let me give you 12 reasons NOT to buy it,
1. Uses a desktop Celeron processor (costs much lower than a mobile version), not Mobile Celeron/Pentium/Athlon. This means laptop gets very hot, fans noisy & uses too much power/battery.
2. No new interfaces like USB 2.0, Firewire, Bluetooth or wireless access. (Doesn't have older serial port, PS2 ports either). And you have only one PCMCIA slot to expand later on for any of those interfaces.
3. It bigger and bulkier than previous models. Desktop CPU means more space for cooling it down etc.
4. Uses a slower memory speed DDR RAM PC1600, good luck finding a PC1600 SoDimm module when upgrading !
5. The keyboard isn't same a desktop, some keys are placed at different positions, some missing. But this might a case with most laptops though.
6. The video card is way too under-powered. You can forget about playing any games made in last 2-3 yrs. DVD's play fine though.
7. Because desktop Celeron runs so hot.
8. The hard disk a only 20GB.
9. Toshiba doesn't even include a OEM Windows XP CD. All it has is are recovery CDs to reformat the whole disk and re-install OS/everything all over again & deleting all your data. Norton AV is only trial version.
10. Toshiba doesn't make or design this laptop. Its designed/made by a [inexpensive] contractor in Taiwan and then sold as Toshiba brand.
11. The battery life is low.
12. Too much noise from fans etc. Wish it was quieter.

Toshiba is good at giving rebate money back so you can count on its low price and this laptop will work great for most simple applications. But don't let the Intel 1.5Ghz label fool you, its missing too many things & will feel obsolete pretty soon. Spending some more money to get a model with mobile Athlon/Pentium processor, maybe 15" LCD, in-built CD-RW & USB 2.0 is well worth it. (Very soon USB 2.0 would be there in all laptops, its already there in most desktops.) There are reasons why Toshiba's selling it for so inexpensively and hopefully you understand enough not to regret later on.

Update: A ignorant reviewer claims this has mobile CPU. Let me clarify again it has a desktop CPU, NOT mobile. Check detailed specs on Toshiba's website if there's still any doubt left. One local store has this for around 500 after rebates. If you find any such bargain price go for it, otherwise there are better models out there.

1-0 out of 5 stars if you want to waste 650 dollars, be my guest.
I bought this laptop, and its the worst 650 dollars i ever spent. it ran flawlessly until the warenty expired. the day after, the whole right side of my keyboard died. also, when you type, the whole keyboard goes up and down, actually the whole laptop. a month later, the soundcard died. the month after, the battery wouldnt sit. when i tried to put it in, i found a little button, that was light blue, which wasnt there before. i pressed it, and my sound worked for 20 seconds. also, random keys fall off, and my whole right side of the keyboard eventually fell off. the only reason this laptop got 1 star is because nothing goes lower than that. your better off with just about any pc. also, this is a MOBILE CELRON. i was a beta tester for this laptop, and filed my complaints on the keyboard and reliability on other OS than windows XP. If you want a laptop, go for a higher end toshiba. this doesnt cut it for anyone. i spent more money in it than i bought it for after it released. i had to buy a usb keyboard, usb 2 card, wireless card, new mouse, because the onboard touchpad caught on fire. so much money spent, go for a desktop or another toshiba/ibm. jsut not a dell though.

1-0 out of 5 stars Donot fall for the price
I had very bad experience with this machine. Personally, I think this laptop is good for the price but what is bad is the customer service from toshiba. They failed me big time with the tech service. The machine crashes very often. It won't boot saying there is a windows file missing. Initialy i thought it is a virus problem. I installed good anti-virus software. after a month, boom.. again the machine fails to boot. Took it to the sys ad, who suggested bad blocks in hard disk. Toshiba wont accept that and stands on their front that it is a software issue. It is not even 8 months but I used recovery cds more than 8 time and lost all my data. For every problem that they donot understand, they go for recovery cds. They dont seem to understand the importance of the data on the machine. They promised me a replacement after the 7th time the problem came up and it is also sent to the depot. When it cam back from the depot, microphone jack wont work. And the machine crashed with in a couple of weeks. When i called them, they tell me to use the recovery cds as the so called T-techs in Toshiba suggested the managers that it is not a hardware problem. I trashed this piece and went to bestbuy to get a better one, and not definitely toshiba. I got HP ze5300 that is running great. And during the chat with the best buy rep. i told him the story and after listening to the problem with the laptop he immediately suggested that it might be a hard disk or ram problem. Even if u enter this query in google, there are zillions of people who suggest you on what the cause is but it is just the Toshiba guys who dont seem to get it.

I am not saying this is a bad piece. But if at any point it fails, you are doomed. That's it. Dont rely on 1 year company warranty or the Toshiba tech service. Just spend few more 100 dollars and get a better one - i recommend sony or HP. they have good laptops.

5-0 out of 5 stars PLEASED, BUT.
I am very satisfied with my equipment.
I'm sorry I was told to fill my rebate offer out and receive my rebate within a certain length of time then read that this model was discontiued after that. What's your take on it?

Sincerly Sheliah ... Read more
