Why on earth would anyone buy applecare from amazon.com? I mean, really, come on.

Question is, who serves who?
Be prepared to hear Apple's Service Representative tell you that, "Amazon is not an authorized reseller" and that you must fax them a copy of your sales/shipping document, and also fax them a copy of the enrollment number of the service plan along with its bar code (which is on one of the sheets of paper inside the "protection plan" package).

If you have a fax machine at your fingertips, I guess this isn't a really big deal, but if you don't, and if you are handicapped and can only walk with great difficulty, you might decide the whole thing really isn't worth the hassle.

Also be prepared to read your iPods serial number which is indistinctly, dimly, and microscopically etched into the backside of your machine. My tired, old eyes required my best magnifying glass with intense light to make it out, and even then I managed to mistake 2 Qs for Os on my first attempt.

On my first request for service I found the iPod representative to be pleasant enough, even affable; but, upon reflection I realized that other than to recite the things I must FAX to them, she hadn't so much as given me the time of day, let alone an answer to the question I had asked her.

Expensive, limited coverage
Considering that this policy only extends the warranty for one year, it is expensive. Coverage for the iPod's biggest problem, its battery, is vague. Apple simply defines as non-defects some apparent battery problems, such as the fact that the battery drains very rapidly when the unit is not in use and turned off. Plus, the battery can drop drastically in usage time, and Apple protects itself by saying this: "Service coverage is available ... for battery depletion of 50 percent or more from original specification." What other company clearly states that precipitous product failure is not covered by either the original or extended warranty?

Very unimpressed
As far as getting 2 extra years of warranty and support goes, I suppose this isn't a bad package. But I felt let down by the telephone support side. I'm told that there are call centres in three countries and the one you get depends on the time you phone. I think I'll phone at a different time next time!
My iMac is only three months old but unfortunately I've had to contact AppleCare already after my Superdrive started doing something odd.
I listened to distorted music for thirty minutes before a human finally spoke to me. Sadly, their English was so poor I could barely understand a thing they said and we had to repeat ourselves over and over. After making me do things I'd already done to try to resolve the problem (obvious things), they very quickly admitted defeat and said I'd have to take my iMac to the local Apple service centre. Once there, the cure was pathetically simple and should have been diagnosed by Apple Care. If it had been, I wouldn't have had to take my machine to the repair centre.
Apple describes Apple Care as a "world class" telephone help service. I'd say it's one of the worst I've ever used in my life.
Still, it's probably worthwhile for the extra two years' warranty. Just pray you never need to call on them!

Cost of Repairs
Apple just replaced the CRT (display) on my eMac under warranty. The cost without warranty would have been 486.56 dollars. This is over 50 percent of the cost of the computer! That would have been great except the CRT is still not working properly.... If you must own an Apple, you want this warranty. It is 50 dollars just to talk to AppleCare after 90 days. Highly recommend
If you have a mac/apple, you must buy this protection plan or the first time something wrong happens, YOU will need to pay for it. While the problems in macs are lesser than PCs, there is the occassional problem. I highly recommend being insured with this plan. Over the past year, I have used it twice, and it's $50 a call without it so it's really worth the money! ... Read more

worth its weight in Wozinaks!
The only way you can even get an AppleCare warranty for a display is when either the display is part of the Mac (such as iMac and eMac), or when the display and Mac are purchased at the same time. Apple is the only company I know of that offers a 3 year protection plan for monitors! Even the flat panel displays! That alone is worth the warranty.

Things happen - power spikes, magnetic fields, just about anything and poof - your data is gone or worse - your machine no longer functions! I am the Mac support person where I work and rarely run into major problems, but when I am stumped, I am so glad I can call AppleCare.

The folks who answer the phone are never in a hurry - they are patient, friendly and sympathetic. They will spend hours if needed, in helping you diagnose the cause of a problem you're having and if needed, they will give you a case number and refer you to an Apple-authorized repair center that will make the repairs at Apple's expense. Naturally, this is not like homeowners insurance - the warranty won't cover things like flood or fire, but if something suddenly stops working or is behaving weirdly, this is what you need.

Without fail, every AppleCare warranty I've ever bought has paid for itself several times over. Never buy a new Mac without one! ... Read more
