Amazon.com Product Description

Packed with versatile features, Sony's STR-DE697 audio/video surround receiver nevertheless provides affordable entry to the exciting world of digital surround sound. The integrated surround processor/amplifier handles everything from the latest surround-sound movie formats to the latest high-resolution audio sources, pumping 100 watts per channel across 7 main channels (left, right, center, left/right mid surround, and left/right rear surround) and has a dedicated subwoofer output for an eighth (the ".1" low-frequency effects channel).

The receiver performs everything from Dolby Digital EX and DTS ES surround decoding to Dolby Pro Logic II processing (creating 5.1 channels from 2), also offering 5.1-channel analog inputs to handle music from Super Audio CD (SACD) and DVD-Audio.

The STR-DE697's FM/AM tuner features 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM), and the front and rear panel offer a host of video inputs--4 composite-video, 3 S-video, and 2 component-video--to simplify switching between components and your television. The component-video inputs accommodate wide-bandwidth (80 MHz) high-definition signals and work well with 480p signals such as those from progressive-scan DVD players. A set of front-panel audio/video input facilitates spontaneous hookups with camcorders, gaming consoles, and MP3 players.

The unit's 3 stereo and 1 set of multichannel analog audio inputs simplify hookup of, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, and a high-resolution audio device that decodes formats like SACD and DVD-Audio. A total of 5 assignable digital-audio inputs (3 optical and 2 coaxial) accept bitstream feeds from DVD players, CD players, and other digital devices, while a single optical digital-audio out channels sound to a CD or minidisc recorder.

Digital Cinema Sound System is a group of exclusive Sony algorithms (the receiver offers 11 total) that represent a total re-thinking of home theater sound based on careful measurements of movie-production dubbing stages in Hollywood. Cinema Studio EX modes offer greater apparent distance from listener to screen and a full array of 10 additional virtual surround speakers.

Sound Field Link applies the last-selected sound field to an input whenever you select the input. For example, if you select STADIUM for the CD input, change to a different input, then return to CD, the receiver will automatically apply the STADIUM sound field. The supplied remote control comes preprogrammed for a range of devices.

3-0 out of 5 stars Manual could be a little better, hope it lives up to name
I got my Gateway in January 1999 with a Mitsumi CD-ROM drive, that drive lasted until early 2003. My next drive was a Creative - it was supposed to be new (I thought so anyway) but lasted until just after the warranty ran out this year. Feeling very disgusted I did some looking around and found this Sony here at Amazon for just a few $ more than some no name (to me)drives and decided to buy it.
When I got the thing I opened the box and thought it looked pretty good but noticed that the manual was lacking a few details. There is one bit about the warranty being voided if you use damaged or poor quality discs (repeated in a sticker on drive drawer)- but no trace of a warranty anywhere in the box or manual. The manual also refers to a system users guide and manual in the installation instructions, I didn't get such things & am positive I never had them.
I was suprised to learn that 52X is a misnomer- the default speed is only 40X and while Sony tells how to temporarily bump up the speed they adivse against it.
Installation itself wasn't so bad, if you know just a little bit more than I do about the work, the manual is pretty straight forward about what/ when to do things. In the few times I've used it so far I've had no problems.
I paid extra for the name Sony, hope it lives up to the reputation I feel it has. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One word - UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I've had this unit for a few weeks now.It is unbelievable! The picture quality in HD and viewing DVD's is incredible.

The only frustration I have and this goes for ALL Sony products is the manual.Their products are outstanding but the manuals that accompany them are very difficult to decipher unless you are a true audiophile. After a few hours of tinkering around though I was able to get it all hooked up and the next day when my cable guy came out to install the HD box he made a few adjustments that got everything working.

My suggestion: If you are going to make this type of an investment including home audio and video equipment, spend a few hundred dollars extra and have a professional come out and hook it up.I didn't do this but in hindsight I think it would have been worth it.

Once it's all hooked up and working the way you want it you won't believe the oooh's and aaah's you will get from this thing. My father and father-in-law were in town over the weekend to watch NBA basketball.Neither of them had ever seen an HD picture and both said it was better than actually being at the game.

Enjoy this product. You won't be disappointed!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony KDF-42WE655: Overall Great TV
This TV has excellent picture and sound. An ideal choice if you want to watch HDTV & non-HDTV regular channels. The 42" screen is small enough to retain clarity for regular channels and big enough for a regular sized living room. Make sure you have enough distance from TV, at least 10 feet. Some of the downsides are:
1. The intensity of the rear projection lamp cannot be changed. It is sufficiently bright for any room but if you are very close to TV in a dark room it is uncomfortable.
2. The TV has a fan inside that is noticeable occassionally at low volumes.
Some Tips: The DVI-HDMI connection somehow did not work with my HDTV cable box. Avoid paying the high price for this cable and go with regular component video cables (RGB). The picture is still crystal clear for HDTV channels. Also avoid expensive Gold tipped thick cables they are not necessary.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Price, Great Quality
As others have mentioned, I researched several TVs and their technologies before settling on the Sony 42" LCD Projection HDTV.I'm pleased.Even with the wide screen, the TV isn't too large and doesn't take up much space. It's not heavy either.

Very nice picture.Standard definition programming is unremarkable, but HD content is spectacular.I went with the 42" because the larger screens aren't quite as bright considering that they all use the same high intensity bulb. It's more screen to illuminate. The 42" screen was more than adequate.Huge in fact.

Even though I have the sound running through a six speaker Sony Dream home theater system, the TV's sound is very nice.Unless you're wanting the booming vibration of a subwoofer, the TV's speakers are fine for everyday viewing and listening.

Of all the reputable retailers, Amazon.com has the best price by far.I looked at Sears, Circuit City, Best Buy, and other online retailers.I decided to go with Amazon because of reputation, lower price, and shipping costs.I found this TV for a little cheaper online from unknown retailers, but the trust factor led me back to Amazon.

The shipping process was wonderful.Arrived in about a week.EagleGL was the carrier. The guy called me on my cell a few minutes before he pulled up to the house.I met him there. He unloaded it, opened the box, placed it on my TV stand, and carried off the cardboard.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE this televiosn!
Let's just say I was ready for a new TV.The television in my living room was a 17 year old 36" console televsion that had the tendancy to keep turning itself on and off after it had been on for over an hour.I finally decided to break down and invest in a new quality television.I first considered getting a plasma screen, but the based on the research I had done, I was not convinced that any added value a plasma screen may give you is worth the extremely higher price. But this Sony WEGA LCD television is most definitely worth its price.

Although not as narrow as a plasma screen television, at a mere 15" in depth, even if space is a consideration, this television will not fail you.

But it is the absolutely beautiful picture and incredibly crisp sound that are the true selling points for this TV.The quality of the picture, even on the non-HDTV channels, is amazing.I am still in awe of how much better the picture is now.The quality of the HD channels absolutely blows me away. While many shows on television aren't necessarily enhanced with HD programming (for instance, do you really need to see "Judging Amy" in pure digital, picture perfect quality?), but on certain programming such as sports or shows that have scenic backgrounds such as "Lost," it is so amazing to see how beautiful they look on this television, I am probably too spoiled now to see them on any other television!

I am also blown away with the stunning performance the television gives when playing DVDs.I recommend getting the upgraded cables to connect your DVD player to the television. But in any event, digital is what this TV was made for, and it is clear when playing DVDs.Given the size of the screen and the quality of the picture, it is akin to actually being in the theater.

The quality of the sound is also up to the standard you expect from Sony.I do not yet have the television hooked up to any external speakers or any surround sound system, but instead rely only on the internal speakers.Nonetheless, the sound is still perfect.I am not a fan of watching of channels such as MTV, VH1, or the like, so cannot really speak as to how the sound system is on channels that are more sound reliant. But you will not be disappointed with the sound on all the other channels.

The added functions and features with the television are also quite impressive. The picture-in-picture function is great, particularly if you like watching sports and can have a game on the smaller screen and watch regular programming on the main screen and click back and forth when something big happens in the game.(I recently switched from cable to satellite -- a switch a highly recommend for everyone -- and have not figured out how, if at all, the picture-in-picture feature will work with satellite.)

In short, I LOVE this television.I am confident you will too.

4-0 out of 5 stars Stunning picture, and it won't break the bank.
I had been shopping for a new television for the better part of three months, and had gone from plasma to LCD and back, before finally settling on the Sony 42" Grand WEGA™ HDTV projection LCD television. It is, hands down, the absolute best value for the money I could find.

PICTURE CLARITY
The HDTV quality is simply amazing, even breathtaking. I have found myself watching 2-hour documentaries about the now defunct whaling industry in Croatia just for the fact that is was broadcast in HDTV. DVD quality is also quite good, and regular digital cable is also rather sharp (and while analog signals will be tolerable, they pale in comparison to the others). Video games are as crisp as they could be, and the television also works great as a secondary monitor (invest in a TV-out video card and a wireless keyboard/mouse, and your couch is now your new home office).

LCD TVs still have some minor issues with either incredibly rapid movement and/or bright flashes of light. There is a small distortion; a pixilation that will briefly flash across the screen but it is at best a minor annoyance. Also, the blacks are not as black as they could/should be, so if you are watching a movie or program where the setting is very dark, there will be a slight glow around the black areas that can be a little annoying.

The short of it is this; if you are in any way normal, you will be blown away by the clarity and intensity of the images this set can produce. If you are a TV snob (and you know who you are), and could rant for ten minutes about the red push, or how optical audio out only passes digital signals via the tuner, then you may have a few complaints. The rest of us will be quite happy.

PICTURE CLAIRITY RUNDOWN:
HDTV: Aside from the above mentioned black levels, flawless, crisp and shockingly bright.

DVD: Good picture, though not quite as good as I expected. Animated/Digitally generated DVD (think Shrek) are nearly as good as HDTV. I suspect this has to do with the set being an LCD projector.

Digital Cable: Average to good, depending on channel, but most fall within the good range (Note: This is based on Comcast digital cable service in Washington DC).

Regular Cable: N/A (I don't have it, so I don't know)

Video Games: Sharp, crisp, and oh-so big. Very Good. (Note: Based on a first gen Sony PS2)

Computer Monitor: Another task that I suspected would be a major hassle that actually went off with little incident was adding a TV out video card to my PC and hooking it directly to my Sony. The picture and resolution are flawless, and with a wireless mouse and keyboard, my sofa has become an extension of my home office.

SOUND
Its...well, its actually not too bad, to be honest. I expected it to be crap, and compared to any decent surround-sound system it does seem rather anemic, but all in all they are quite good, and the audio options are numerous. I sill suggest a decent surround sound system, but you can live without it.

EASE OF USE
I think out of everything, this surprised me the most. I had purchased a new all-in-one Sony surround sound/DVD player with the television, and had my digital/HDTV cable box delivered a day before. I now had the daunting task of trying to coble all of this together.

I won't lie about this; I was scared. The TV I had before this one was a 27" GE that I first purchased when I joined the Navy, and the only input it had was a singular hookup for coaxial cable.

To my surprise (and everlasting gratitude) It was amazingly easy. Three cables is all that it took (four if you count the Playstation), and it worked like a charm the first time around. Also here are 8 video input channels for this television, so I can't imagine I would ever run out of room for more devices.

One note on this: With a set this good, and assuming you plan to hook it up to a 5.1 surround sound system, it is going to cost you about 300 bucks for new wires and a decent surge protector. Factor that into your final cost for this big-ticket item. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tough, versatile, accurate.
I bought the 500DV about 3 years ago and have used it everywhere for everything.I made tapes. I listened to Books on Tape.I used it with headphones; I listened to the integrated speakers.I played it in hotel rooms, airplanes, the desert, the snow, on long drives, while doing carpentry, while changing my oil. It's been dropped, sprayed with water, subjected to sawdust, dirt, and hundreds (yes, hundreds) of public library cassettes. It finally gave up the ghost after being dropped for about the fifteenth time (snapped one of the wires going to the drive motor--it's actually repairable, with a teensy soldering iron).

Total maintenance performed: dabbed the playback head with isopropyl alcohol twice; blew on cassette bay to remove sawdust several dozen times.Dismantled once to put auto-reverse drive belt back on (it slipped off after I dropped the device onto a driveway, I think).

It's got a speed control knob on the back, which is big fun to play with but eventually gets a strip of electrical tape so it doesn't keep moving when it's in my tool belt. The speakers deliver crisp sound audible from across a room and give your ears a rest from that unpleasant sensation that can occur from wearing headphones all day.I listen to my 500DV about 40 hrs. a week (I am a carpenter) and have become spoiled with its surprising ruggedness, reliability, and steady delivery of clear sound.

Cons: Musical instruments sound tinny on playback, as the 500DV is designed for the human voice. It is a tad heavy when compared to its cheaper Walkman-like counterparts. It is more expensive than most voice recorders due to the external speakers, speed control knob, and overall ruggedness. The "PLAY" button kind of looks like the other buttons (dab some bright pink nail polish on it) and can be hard to find.

4-0 out of 5 stars Misconception of Reviewer "An Electronics Fan"
The only review of this recorder (Sony TCM-500DV) says that the recorder and appropriate adaptor "have been discontinued." According to Sony, neither is the case. The recorder is still available as is the appropriate Sony Worldwide AC Power Adaptor, their model number AC-E30A.

1-0 out of 5 stars DON'T BOTHER
I bought this voice recorder. Below on the page Amazon had listed the accessories that go with this product. The AC adapter listed on the Amazon site is WRONG. Furthermore, don't bother buying this because the adapter is almost impossible to find. Amazon should correct their error and mention that the product and the adapter have been discontinued. A lot of money to pay for a recorder that doesn't have any attainable accessories. I am really surprised at how Amazon has become very error-ridden of late. I will take my business elsewhere for all things not books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice package
The RA8xxx Series from Sony is very nice.Big plus is the cooling system. The machine is super quiet. The integrated Home Media support is a nice bonus.I don't think I'd want to use one of these as a TiVo replacement but for a home machine it's tough to beat from a combination of style, power, features and performance.

Negatives are the crappy mouse and keyboard and having to burn your own Recovery software.

1-0 out of 5 stars buyer beware!!
Just bought this yesterday at compusa. Will be taking it back tomorrow morning. This is the 5th computer I have owned and the worse I have ever seen. Sony has allot of wonderful software on this system and impressive 5.1 speakers that come with it. But you are screwed if you have to do a system recovery. Followed the directions and spent 2 hours making recovery disks before putting any of my software on it, only to find out that when it tries to recover your system it prompts you to insert disk #1 and press ok. Guess what? You can't press ok because your wireless mouse and keyboard are no longer functional. And turning off the computer wiped out ALL my system restore checkpoints. So I couldn't even restore to a earlier time. When I tried it again I then got a message that it couldn't locate the recovery partion. And forget about any type of help from the website or the non-existant user manual. The only help they had was to change the batteries in the mouse and keyboard (they already had brand new batteries). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Now we're talking....
I read the reviews on Amazon and checked out the Olympus and other recorders...nothing touches this one for usability.Therein lies some of the problem.I'm a techie and still can'tuse it in the dark when driving. As a master's student, it has proved invaluable in lecture. On the (CONF-Hi) setting, it easily picks up even the whiniest professor's voice at a 15 foot range. The main reason I purchased the ICD-BM1 was it's 5 Dragon award from Dragon Natually Speaking(DNS).I use DNS v7.3 and have found it trained easily and has around 95% accuracy (down a few points from another reviewer) probably because I impatiently read the 1 hr training script in 40 minutes. It's very small and extremely light. The case has two velcro'd places for additional memory sticks. However, since it can use 128mb (not pro)I rarely swap sticks.I use the 128 for class related info and the others for personal life - maybe that's why I rarely swap - I have no personal life. One more thing, it's fabulous with DNS for dictating emails while driving. This allows emailing to family friends that would otherwise not hear from me as often.Great product!!!!

PART TWO - 4 MONTHS AFTER PURCHASE
When first setting up the unit I found the battery door was very difficult to get open - but dismissed it figuring how often would I be replacing batteries? It turns out the door has now become unstable and sits in a slightly open position, popping open at will. When the batteries come out unnoticed, I have to reset the date/time etc.

After contacting Sony I learned that IF they determine it is a manufacturing defect versus user abuse, they will exchange the unit. The problem is... the unit received in exchange will not be new, rather it will be used (refurbished).

A warranty should repair or replace with a new unit - especially manufacturing defects. I'm disappointed in Sony.

Rather than do without the unit only to receive a used unit, I've decided to tape the door shut.

Started to order this item at the listed price of $299. On checkout the price was $320 - plus $22 more for handling and shipping.

1-0 out of 5 stars Included Sony Voice Editor Software Incompatibility
I returned the Sony ICB BM1 due to the loud audible "click" it inserts into the recording whenever it is paused. Sony tech support said that it was a characteristic of all BM1's, not just the unit I had. Then I find that the Sony Voice Editor software is incompatible with my Windows XP Media Center pc, and the more current Voice Editor software which came with the BM1 does a "dirty" uninstall (leaves it's own dll files in the windows\system folder rather than the Windows dll files it replaced). This caused my Sony ICD MS515 Voice Editor software (an earlier version) not to work. After a week back and forth with Sony tech support, their conclusion is that ALL Sony Voice Editor software is incompatible with Windows XP Media Center pc's, and I was just out of luck that my older Sony ICD MS515 Voice Editor (and the recorder) wouldn't work now after working fine for seven months. I'll never by Sony again, and am waiting for the new Olympus DS-2200.

5-0 out of 5 stars BM-1 Works GREAT With Dragon NatSpeak Pro
I checked around several places before I made my BM-1 purchase. First of all, these puppies were hard to find anywhere much less get anyone on the phone who could tell me very much about the product.I found what I was looking for at voicerecognition.com where I was able to speak to someone who could explain in more detail to me how the Sony BM 1 would work with Dragon NaturallySpeaking Pro which I also own. The accuracy with the recorder is about 98% which I'm very pleased with. The slide switch is great because all the main functions are in one place.

4-0 out of 5 stars Probably the best IC Recorder available as of 04/2004
I've had this unit for approximately 5 months, during which time it has been almost continuously strapped to my belt.

The unit is finished very well, with a brushed aluminum case and a belt case that allows quick removal of the recorder, and also for storage of spare Memory Sticks in 2 pouches on the side.

If you own other Sony devices, this one uses the same USB trransfer cable, and also of course takes the Memory Stick cards which are proprietary to the Sony brand.

The software was simple to install and operate, though I was a little disappointed that unlike the cheaper Sony ICD-MS515, this unitl is not shipped with the Dragon Naturally Speaking software. The Sony codec is not installed to the PC for encoding, only decoding. The internal mic has adjustable sensitivity, but I use it mainly on the conference microphone setting rather than the dictation, because I rarely use it for the latter. The intermal mic provides very adequate audio quality, picking up speech from 10-15 feet away without excessive noise, though I'm sure an external would be even better. The built in speaker is barely adequate!

However, when compares to that MS515, the operation of the unit itself is much simpler. Those of you that hate software menus and prefer solid switches and buttons will love this unit. Although there is a configuration menu, most operations are accomplished with the use of high quality switches. For example, the main toggle allows the user to switch between record, stop and play effortlessly, and inserting or adding to an existing recording is easily done. In fact, I would say that it's designed to operate like the earlier generation tape devices, but without the limitations of that medium - easy.

The quality of sound from this equipment is far in excess of what will normally be required. the High quality setting operates at a sampling rate of 44kHz, similar to CD quality, and when played back on a PC with good qualityh speakers, it shows. The medium quality is more than adequate for most purposes, and will provide you up to approx 20 hours of recording on a 128MB memory stick - more than adequate for me. I don't even bother using the lowest quality setting, although it's adequate for most purposes and substantially free from artefacts, as are the other modes.

I use NiMH batteries rather than disposable alkaline, my small contribution to the planet, and I do find that the batteries will last for about 4 hours of recording, whereas high performance alkalines would last much, muich longer. the main power switch can tend to be knocked on or off in the carry case, which can be annoying, but actually, it uses very little power unless in an active mode such as recording or playback, so I don't see that as a fatal flaw. Inserting and removing the Memory Stick is a snap, there being a solid click when the card is properly positioned, and the display confirms that the card is being read, and how much space (relatively) remains. The display is easy to read, and can be configured to tell you different information about such as time remaining on card, time spent on this track, volume levels (VU meters) etc. easily be pressing the display button.

All in all, although I have had the opportunity to trade this unit for another, I declined to do so. It's worth mentioning also that this recorder is sufficiently advanced to be used even for legal recording and transcription (IMO) with the optional paddle equipment.

As with all free information, your mileage may vary.... ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony enters the crowded hard disk-based music player scene with a formidable contender, the NW-HD1. Billed as the world's smallest hard drive digital music player, the silver palm-sized unit is slim and sleek-- perfect for a pocket or purse. Weighing just under 3.9 ounces, the NW-HD1 is so light, you'll want to take it everywhere. Inside the unit, a 20 GB drive stores up to 13,000 Songs in ATRAC3plus format when the songs are encoded at the 48kbps bitrate setting. A lithium-ion battery delivers up to a whopping 30 hours of playtime-- most other digital music devices can't even come close in the battery life department.

The NW-HD1 keeps the music smooth and steady with a built in G-Sensor that ensures skip-free play during your bounciest car rides, workouts and jogging expeditions. The 1.5" 7-line backlit display provides all the information you need to keep tabs on your tunes. While displaying track number, bit rate, elapsed time, song title, and artist name, it provides a spectrum analyzer for viewing your music's highs and lows, as well as play mode, bass boost, volume limiter and battery life indicators.

In addition to a standard mini headphone jack, the NW-HD1 also sports a line out jack so you can plug the player into your car or home stereo, or into a powered speaker system. The unit's USB 2.0 port is the key transferring music onto the device and charging the battery. Simply pop the NW-HD1 into the supplied cradle, connect the cradle to your PC and you're ready to transfer your ATRAC3plus encoded tracks at high speed to the device. Meanwhile, the cradle charges the NW-HD1's battery when the cradle is plugged in via the supplied AC adapter. A quick charge feature allows the battery to be charged to 80 percent capacity in just an hour.

The power to encode, organize, and manage the music you play on the NW-HD1 lies in Sony's bundled music software, SonicStage. With SonicStage, you can import, manage and easily transfer your digital music collections. First, import your audio CDs, existing MP3s or Windows Media files into SonicStage and then encode them to ATRAC3plus. Then, set up playlists and mixes on your PC. Finally, use the high speed USB connection to upload the tracks to your NW-HD1. It couldn't be simpler. The NW-HD1 is also fully compatible with Sony's robust Connect Online Music Store, which provides an easy method for downloading personal music in ATRAC3plus format. Connect offers access to over 500,000 songs including many independent titles as well as featured artist and celebrity mixes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Smart and stylish, but missing one thing...
These brackets look great and fit so well with the Sony speakers that you'd think they were part of the speaker once assembled, but I must admit I was a bit disappointed that they don't come with any screws to mount them to the wall nor do the instructions give info on the correct size.

I had to go out to a hardward store with the bracket in hand and literally try different sizes until I found the right ones. The head of the screws have to be flat underneath, not angled or the brackets may "rock" slightly on the wall. (Round head, steel, size 8x1 wood screws work nicely I found out.) ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Sony Mavica CD500 combines the advantages and capacity of the instant-archive CD-R/RW format with advanced resolution and control flexibility. The Mavica CD500 features a 5-megapixel sensor, 3x optical zoom, and a movie mode that shoots full-frame video.

Step-up Value
Here's a Sony feature that adds value to this digital camera and differentiates it from other models in the Sony lineup.

product image CD-RW Media: CD Mavica cameras shoot directly to 156 MB CD-R/RW discs, so there's room for hundreds of images and movie clips for instant archiving.

Optics and Resolution
Optimized for photo enthusiasts, the MVC-CD500 offers a 5-megapixel Super HAD sensor for image detail up to 2,592 x 1,944 pixels and print enlargements up to 20 by 30 inches. Get closer to your subjects with the Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar 3x optical zoom lens (34-102mm equivalency in 35mm photography). The Mavica CD500 also features a 3.2x digital zoom.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on high-capacity 156 MB CD-R (recordable) and CD-RW (rewritable) discs, enabling you to instantly archive your shots. Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via USB connectivity, which means it can be connected to any USB-based Windows 98/Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any software.

Movie Mode
You can capture far more than still images with the MPEG Movie VX function. Most digital cameras' movie modes are limited to 30- or 60-second clips, but the Mavica CD500 can keep shooting until you've filled the CD-R/RW, approximately 6 minutes at full VGA resolution (640 x 480, 16 frames per second).

More Features
Flexible exposure control is provided with aperture priority, shutter priority, and manual exposure modes. For better command of motion and depth of field, the Program Shift feature allows various aperture and shutter-speed combinations from within the auto mode. The Mavica CD500's five-area multipoint AF can also evaluate five separate areas of the frame and intelligently focuses on the subject, displaying the selected focus point; or, the user can choose any of the five points for manual control.

With single, monitoring, and continuous AF modes, the photographer can optimize focusing to the situation, which is especially useful for capturing action shots. The hologram AF illuminator projects a laser pattern on the subject to artificially create contrast, even in low or no light.

Multipattern measuring independently meters the light in 49 points of the frame to establish the optimum exposure, even when highlight and shadow are not centered in the frame.

Other features include:

  • Large 2.5-inch TFT LCD monitor
  • Pop-up flash with auto, on, off, slow, and red-eye reduction modes
  • Hot-shoe for connecting external flash or remote control
  • Scene modes include twilight, twilight portrait, landscape, beach, and snow
  • Two-shot burst mode and multiburst mode of 16 images at 320 x 240 pixels

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Pictures, But Really Slow
This camera is excellent. I use this camera to take pictures for my school's yearbook and it's made my job 10 time easier. The pictures are incredible. It's very easy to use, you can just point and shoot. I've been fiddling with the different focus and lighting settings, and i have snapped some simply amazing shots. The disc makes it easy to tranfer your pictures. All i have to do is pop it in my cdrom drive then copy and paste. The disc gets filled up fast, especially when "deleting" pictures, so buy alot of them. Movie mode shoots in the mpeg format and is pretty good quality, but use a camcorder if movies are all you plan to do.

The only problems I found would be the 3x zoom (it should be 6x at least) and the slow write speed to the disc after taking the pictures. **Also use CD-RWs, because once you finalize that CD-R, your stuck with what's on it.**

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value; Highly Recommended!
This excellent camera takes terrific photos. With Windows XP & USB 2.0, I was taking photos and viewing them on my PC within minutes of opening the box, although I see that some of the more advanced features will take me a while to master. I chose this particular camera for 3 reasons; my previous experience with a Sony Mavica, the 5MP quality and the mini-CD.

I frequently wish to access the images on my PC after taking only a very few photos, so I quickly learned that "finalizing" the CD-RW each time before inserting it into the PC is impractical (I was unaware of this step prior to purchase, but it is necessary for the PC's CD drive to read it). Not to worry! Using the USB cable, (no drivers required for Windows XP/USB 2.0) the images are accessible immediately, so you can wait until the CD is full & finalize just once. Of course, you would want to wait until a CD-R was full before finalizing it anyway.

Amazon's product description of the camera's features is excellent, so I don't need to restate them all here. I am pleased with my purchase of this camera and recommend it highly to others.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great , But .....
I love the camera and all the features . I don't miss 35 mm as much as I thought I would with this camera . I love that you can just click and e-mail right away . One problem is that I used the mavica discs and found them to be great , but expensive . So I did what every one else did , used a cheaper disc , not Mavica . They worked for a while but now , won't work at all .It won't intialize or finalize . They were not kidding when they warn that other discs will damage your camera . I called Sony and they tell me this is what happens . I have a useless camera now , it won't even work with the Mavica disc. I can still see all the already recored disc from the past but can't make any new . It's ashame because the camera takes the best digital pictures i have seen .They need to work on this since you can't even find the mavica disc in my area .Thanks alot Sony .

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Camera
I have been using this camera for about a few months now and I love it. The picture quality, with 5 mega pixels is amazing. The detail and colors that come through are great, much more than what I would expect for a digital camera. There is so much you can do with the camera and still have not learned everything.

I was concerned when I purchased this camera that it would take long before you could take one picture to the next- due to the CD burner. I read in someone's review that this was a problem with them. I have not have had any such problem and I am able to take a picture right after another. It appears it stores the photo within an internal memory if it is still recoding the prior on the CD. I also love the fact you can store so many photos on single CD which I can buy for less than 50 cents a cd.

I also enjoy using the movie mode to capture videos. Although it is not the quality of a camcorder, the quality is pretty decent and you can record about 6 minutes on a 210mb 3 inch cd-r. I would be careful not to have the lens zoomed when recording because it seems to lessen the video quality. You also can not zoom in or out while in the video mode.

I would also be careful when buying accessories for this camera. I bought two filter and the adapter that attaches to the camera and I think they are great because I can protect the lens. I also bought the starter accesory kit which includes the carrying bag, an extra battery and 3 CD-RW. I believe I purchased this for 60 dollars. If you factor in the price for the battery and the CDs, it is a little over 60 dollars so I thought this was a deal because I was getting a camera case as well. Unfotunately the case just fits the camera (and it is a VERY SOFT case- so do not expect it to protect it if you tend to be rough) but now it no longers fits in with the adapter/filter attchment. That is something to be careful about.

One other point is the LCD screen. It is very large and I think it goes great with the camera. There is no viewfinder though and it can be a little difficult to see if there is bright sunshine on the screen, although it does work well outside. There is also an atchment sold for this where you can use a view finder. I plan on purchasing that as well in the future.

The zoom on the lens is only 3x. Although I would prefer more it still is great.

As my last note, between the camera itself and the attachments I have, it is large. Some people have complained about the size of the camera. It is about the size of a small SLR camera. If you are looking for something small, don't purchase this one, go with a simple point and shoot. Yet, if size is not an issue and you want a great camera than this is the way to go. I bought this camera for 450- on sale. I would definitely wait and look around before shelling out 600 which most places have this priced for. Overall though- it is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marvelous Mavica CD
I've been using the SONY MVCCD500 CD Mavica for about 9 months in forensic engineering work. The camera has been completely reliable inspite of some rough handling and adverse conditions. Disc media has huge capacity and is great for archiving photographic evidence. Read only media helps defend against accusations of digital photo tampering. Resolution is adequate for some surprisingly good enlargements. Zeiss lense is supurb. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars good ones are really good
I have this unit and the two Panasonic boomboxes that can be used for dubbing tapes. I found the quality of the dub was a little better (higher s/n) than on the Panasonic 570 or the other one (530? 470?).However after not much time I found that the record head did not always engage properly. On this unit the head moves at an angle, it moves 90 degrees or less intoposition instead of moving straight ahead when record is pressed.I didhave less reception problems with this than the Panasonics; on the P's thestation has often drifted by the time I've recorded 45 minutes.I hadforgotten about "AFC" until that problem with the panasonics. Ihave both this model and a very similar one the model # I think sony 318,which keep stations in a little better when recording while mobile. Butthat had a body hardware problem as well - the door came off very easily! No wonder the guy sold it to me for $15 on ebay. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Good, but some weird bugs
Overall I like this player, however there are some unforgivable bugs with this player that keep it from getting 5 stars. Everything with this player is awsome except for the few problems I have found so far. I am somewhat of a weirdo when it comes to what music I listen to, I like video game music and on my commute to work this summer (40 min) or to school in the fall-spring (3 hours to get there) I need something to pass the time and the great melodies/harmonies/etc. in much video game music is irresitable.

Anyway I had a previous player that played mp3s that I used until it broke. I got this new one and what is weird is that out of the 4 mp3 cds I have 3 work, 1 does not. All were made on the same disc type and created using the same software. The one that does not work stays in the loading screen forever.

The next problem is that I have 2 discs that were made in the factory (not mine or anyone elses cd-burner) that do not work. One is my Civilization 2 disc. Track 1 is the game data, track 2-10 each hold a song. When in the loading screen it tries to load it but it says there is no game data, even though other cd-players (not in a computer) can play this cs.

Next is one of Baldur's Gate 2. It came with the collector's edition and holds some bonus stuff on the disc (track 1) and tracks 2-3? hold songs. Anyway it just plays mp3 files of 5 second sound bites that are on track 1 that are for the bonus material. I have tried switching folders etc., but the player I guess does not realize to go to the other tracks.

Other then that that it is perfect and has great sound. If you know how to fix this please contact me, some how. Because then this gets a 5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice MP3 discman
The editor review nicely covers almost all the features of this player, with a few exceptions. This player supports VBR MP3s, and according to Sony, the battery life when playing MP3 CDs is 65 hours. One not so great feature is that the battery compartment is inside the player, so if you need to change the batteries, you have to open the player, remove any CD that might be in it, and then you have access to the battery compartment.
The various equalizer settings make very noticeable differences in how your music sounds, but all are nicely clear and crisp, and in my experience don't distort even low quality mp3 files. The included headphones produce decent sound. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A little more, and a little smaller than the old ICD-ST25
Everything you liked (or hated) about the ST25 is back in the new model, but this one's skinnier by a 1/4-inch, and the display has been changed to be wider but shorter - same displays.New STLP mode is like a ST (high quality mode) file but with less resolution, so you can pack a third more time in the non-expandable 32MB memory (still about 7 hours on SP, 15 hours on LP, 2.5 hrs on ST, say 4 hours on STLP).

Don't expect to try to digitally record music on this unit because you cannot disable the automatic gain function (it's really designed for recording speeches or other presentation material, not recording concerts). In a pinch, I have used it to capture the audio line-out of a DVD, but it's not good with wide volume changes since it tries to equalize everything to an overall acceptable volume.

I like/dislike the 4-way toggle button RW<- v ^ ->FF idea - it gets rid of one extra 2-way button, but it gets confusing if you were trying to manipulate it without looking at the display. On the other hand, if the settings are the way I want them, I don't usually have to touch that button. You just hit the Record to start, and again to pause recording (Stop saves and lets Record create a separate file). It's good at splitting and combining, and the USB port lets the proprietary software manipulate the sound files for general management (but very limited editing).

Battery life is the same as the ST25 - about 16 hrs. per set of 2 AAA's.I miss the swivel microphone mount because I often used the ST25 sitting on the floor and pointed the mics upward, or in a shirt pocket pointed away from me.

Bottomline - better sound quality than the $99 or less variety recorders. No memory card expansion available, so you need to dump off files to clear space. Speaker is loud enough to be able to hold it to your ear and hear playback clearly if at a noisy airport, so that's a nice feature. Can be used in a pinch to record music via line input, but with degraded quality compared with a true MP3 recorder.Smaller than most units of similar capacity. Since it was designed to function better when connected to a PC, why not make it rechargeable via USB as well? ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Speaker no longer works
In less than a year, the speaker for my ICD-ST25VTP recorder no longer works. The only way I can get audio is through headphones or by downloading the files onto my computer.

Other than that, this digital recorder has been quite useful for conducting interviews, etc.It picks up voices fairly well, even in a loud room.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good hardware, horrible software
I purchased 2 Sony ICD-ST25VTP packages, which includes Scansoft NaturallySpeaking version 7.
The first 4 computers I tried to install the software on crashed at the same point during the install process. Scansoft was completely unwilling to help without a prepaid fee. Sony told me this was Scansoft's problem.
Scansoft sales told me version 7 is no good and to buy version 8, for $150/copy to upgrade.

I'm very disappointed that Sony would partner with a business that provides NO technical support without additional cost.

The 4 computers were running XP Pro on 2 and Windows 2000 pro on the other 2. I found a Windows 98SE machine, and the software crashed that too, but was present after reboot (condition unknown). No matter what I tried, I could not get any reasonable voice to text translation - was returning jibberish.

This past weekend I purchased this same device from a local store (Staples) and had exact same result. When I returned it, the sales person showed me a box full of returned devices and told me that other customers had some complaint I did - could not install the software. They gave me full refund.

In the past I have always had very good luck with Sony products, but strongly recommend that you avoid this package.
By the way - Scansoft has a service pack for version 7 at their web site, but the OEM version that is included with the Sony ICD-ST25VTP does not qualify for the upgrade, and the service pack install fails.

The Sony device works very well, but the voice to text software is completely useless (at least as far as OEM version 7 is concerned).

3-0 out of 5 stars Flawed, but leader in the market
I'm a professional broadcaster, having used MD since the early 1990's, and our organization uses these for newsgathering. The main flaws of the MZ-B100 as noted elsewhere are lack of lighted LCD, and extremely slow RR/FF and other actions, due to the single AA power supply and other issues. But another drawback is that, after extensive use, and with some units this develops earlier, it starts adding phantom tracks without pressing the track button. This is bothersome when you're trying to keep a record of what is where.I hope SONY comes out with an upgrade, but doubt they will, because they already have the slightly cheaper MZ-B10 and other digital recorder options.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice unit
This is a great unit- I bought a sony mini disc player 6 years agowhich just started to give problems (having dropped it many times)so i had to get a new one. ThisB100 as a great replacement. It is so convenient to have the ability to record and play-back all on one unit-no cords.

Cons.

No lighted display!

This makes it impossible to read even in dimmly lit environments and obviously an oversight on sony's part.

That said, however, an excellent unit, great features and performance

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for journalists
...As a journalist of 25 years experience, I have tried just about every cassette/microcassette/solid-state handheld field recorder out there. Too well do I know the hearbreak of getting back from a day of great interviews to find nothing but a hiss, or hum, or worst of all, a mumble that you cannot quite make out. This recorder solves all of those problems. It is very easy to see that it is recording -- a red light flashes -- which is reassuring while the interview is in progress. It can record for five hours, more than enough for the average reporting day. The media is removable, which means you can tuck the minidisc in a folder and transcribe it later (not possible with the new batch of solid-state microchip recorders). Battery life is fabulous, advertised at 45 hours and I believe it, the battery never seems to give up. It has a nice variable-speed playback feature, so you can run it at 80 percent speed and thus keep up while transcribing. Only minor quibble is that the review feature has a delay...if you want to back up a few seconds to catch a missed word, you have to wait about five seconds for the backing up to begin. Anyway, this thing is not cheap, but if it salvages one interview that would otherwise be lost, it will be more than worth it to the working journalist. I use it for print, but I understand that minidisc is becoming the media of choice for in-the-field radio reporters. I believe it: the sound that comes out of this thing is just plain perfect.

5-0 out of 5 stars the music biz 100 recorder
I had recently purchased a Mini disc recorder from the guitar center. It's advertised as a songwriters dream. In a box you get the md recorder, mic, headphones etc. I thought to my self, all these damn cords all the time! with todays technology and demand why hasn't anybody developed a md recorder with built in stereo microphones (along with an optional mic jack), built in speaker (along with an optonal headphone jack)And a variable pitch control (very important). Well, I did some deep research and found that the only way to find such a product was to take a look at sony's line of md recorders and see if there on the ball. Sure enough to my amazement I found the Mz B-100 a buisiness recorder with all the features I'd desired plus more. Except, it's advertised only as a journalists tool. This little bad boy is a songwriters dream for It's quick inspiration and exceptional surround sound quality (if you want). Mono or stereo and two more mega bass boost settings are available. It has a high/low mic sensitivity button. The stereo mics are labeled left and right on each side of the recorder and are by no means a toy, they sound fantastic and I haven't even tried it with anexternal stereo mic yet,I could only imagine. And the speaker works well enough to monitor your meanderings in quieter setting(not in crowds). You can also monitor while your recording to get the best mic placement with the supplied earphones that are great. Or even better yet, try monitoring at home with a set of professional studio headphones...incredible! It also has an input for an optical cable if you desire to hook it up to a cd player or multitrack recorder. And it has a power supply jack, contrary to the advertised specs. Also You can label each track or pass. And The recording time and battery life are great. It's just an awesome little heavyweight! (can you tell I'm impressed?) Now a few little NEGS and believe me there just a few little ones. The carrying case is rather useless. The only thing it might do is protect the finish, that's it! Besides that, I've seen better carrying pouches that come with more inexpensive ones, I think in considering it's application, a padded case would have been more deserving... besides, I always accidentally hit record when I grab the carrying pouch (not good). And Considering the price of the machine, A display screen that lights up is invaluable to the journalist. Definetely an overseen feature available on lesser md recorders. Another problem is a few of the buttons are rather tiny. I have a very small hand and even I find it difficult to press some of the buttons such as erase, edit/memo, display, etc. Apart from that, It's a powerhouse of a tool. Still amazed that Sony isn't pitching it to the music retailers. ... Read more
