5-0 out of 5 stars Pristine sound at any volume
If you're looking at SONY boom boxes, you may be considering both their black CFD-G500 and their silver CFD-F10.I bought both and would like to share my impressions thus far.

Appearance:I really love the sleek even elegant lines of the silver F10.

Portability:The silver F10 is lighter and more stream-lined, so if you want a unit that you can move around, this is an advantage over the heavier and bulkier G500.

Sound:I listen almost exclusively to classical music. Both models do a great job of providing a full rich sound. The MEGA BASS and MEGA Xpand of the silver F10 give it a sound quality comparable, at least to my ears, to the larger and somewhat more expensive black G500 (which has a power drive woofer).

But the black G500 has two advantagesI really appreciate over the silver F10:

1. It has a feature that allows me to select 5 different audio emphases:one is good for the whole dynamic range (great for classical), one is best for vocals, one for percussive sounds etc.
2. When I'm playing a symphony at fairly high volume, and the orchestra reaches a real crescendo, the black G500 conveys the full blast of music with great clarity. The silver F10 does a good job of handling a high volume but not full blasts without losing some sound definition.

Bottom line:I'm delighted with both.I bought the silver F10 for use in my den, where I want to hear full rich sounds played at low to medium high volumes.I bought the black G500 for use in a corner of my living room, where I need higher volumes to reach into my kitchen and dining room as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can you say AMAZING!
I personally don't care how much Sony Products cost. THE JVC I bought was crap. THE AIWA I HAVE IS MAJOR CRAP. I love Sony and this Boom Box is the best yet I have bought from them! I'm ordering another one for my Office.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUND AND SOLID UNIT!!!!
WOW!!!
I just bought this boombox, I love the powerful sound quality solid bass and loud crisp sound, really love this boombox sound like Bookself HIFI stereo's, forget those BOSE and crap systems out there , put them for 100's dollars, this do the job and great brand and price, worth every penny I paid! ...A+

1-0 out of 5 stars Is not compatible with the CD-RW format!
I purchased this item for Amazon's description included ""Audio CD-R/CD-RW playback compatibility". That is simply not true! I recorded CD-RW's using various techniques and this unit did not recognize any of them. This is clearly "misleading" advertising in my opinion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Bought this for the great bass...but...
One drawback is the lack of battery or other backup for the 30 presets. Once you unplug the unit, to move it to another location, you lose all the presets. I don't know if that is the case with batteries installed, but that is the case when only supplying it with outlet power. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Video and audio buffs rejoice: Sony's 5-disc, DVP-NC875V/S changer handles all your DVD, CD, and Super Audio CD (SACD) needs--including playback of MP3 music and JPEG image CDs. The player gives you all the convenience of a carousel changer--continuous playback, play exchange--as well as progressive-scan video outputs with Precision Cinema Progressive technology and cool enhancements like Sony's Precision Drive 3 system for playing damaged discs.

The DVP-NC875V/S plays just about any disc out there, from DVD-Video to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW. And whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the DVP-NC875V/S stands ready to deliver the full potential of your DVDs through Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive de-interlacer (scanning) with 3:2 pulldown processing. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Precision Cinema Progressive technology uses a 12-bit video DAC (digital-to-analog converter) with high-bandwidth, 108 MHz processing to detect image changes at the pixel level, rather than at the level of whole scan lines. That makes this player's picture more faithful to the source--whether film or video--because it uses separate, optimized algorithms to handle different pixel behaviors. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.

DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 reverse pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Depending on the disc, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound. As an anti-piracy measure, the DVP-NC875V/S performs its own decoding of SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel SACD releases. Built-in SACD bass management helps you tailor the output level of the ".1" LFE (low-frequency effects) channel to your system, as an appropriate level may differ from the output level appropriate for Dolby Digital and DTS surround mixes.

If you're not planning to use the SACD capability for multichannel programming, both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can also be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (1 each RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for simpler connection to a compatible receiver (multichannel analog and digital-audio interconnects are not supplied).

Precision Drive 3 provides a mechanism for reading DVDs that are in less than perfect condition, eliminating errors in playback due to imperfect, scratched, or warped discs.

As soon as you hook up the DVD player, a special Quick Setup screen appears ready to guide you through configuration, step by step, screen by screen. DVD resume memory kicks in whenever you stop a DVD. Later, when you come back to it, the player will pick up right where you left off before. The player holds resume points for an impressive 40 discs.

Other playback features include 10-second instant replay, DVD/CD Text display (with applicable discs), a digital video enhancer, digital video EQ (equalization), custom parental control memory for 40 discs, as well as Advanced SmoothScan and SmoothSlow Modes.

Amazon.com Product Description

Blending an amazing array of features for a budget digital camera, the Sony DSCP41 is a perfect point-and-shoot camera for spontaneous moments you'll treasure forever. The DSCP41 offers a 4-megapixel resolution to capture even the tiniest detail, 3x digital zoom, 4-shot burst mode, and a high-resolution movie mode that's limited only by your Memory Stick's capacity. For a step up in price, the Sony DSCP73 offers a 3x optical zoom, A/V connection to view images on your TV, and a histogram display.

Optics and Resolution
The 1/2.7-inch Super HAD (Hole Accumulation Diode) CCD allows more light to pass to each pixel, increasing sensitivity and reducing noise, and provides a 4.1-megapixel effective resolution (2304 x 1728).The Real Imaging Processor offers greater clarity and picture quality as well as improved response time and battery life and decreased shutter lag. The DSCP41 has a fixed focus lens, but you can get closer to the action with its 3x digital zoom.

Movie Mode
Capture video with audio at 30 frames per second (fps) at VGA size 640 x 480;the included 16 MB memory card will store 42 seconds of video at this setting. Movie length is only limited by the amount of storage you have on hand. The Video Mail mode captures a smaller movie (160 x 112 pixels) that's more suitable to sending to friends and family via e-mail.

More Features

  • Resolution modes: 2304 x 1728 (4.1MP), 2048 x 1536 (3MP), 1280 x 960 (1MP), 640 x 480 (VGA)
  • 1.5-inch, 64K LCD monitor makes framing shots and reviewing pictures easy.
  • Auto Bright Monitoring: To help framing in low-or no-light situations, CCD gain is briefly increased to provide an extra bright display on the LCD viewfinder just before exposure.
  • Selectable Focus Mode: Monitoring AF (Auto Focus) helps you anticipate the action by focusing even before you press the shutter release.
  • 5 Area Multi-Point Auto Focus: By evaluating 5 separate focus areas of the frame, SonyÕs Multi-Point AF system can intelligently focus on the subject and avoid mistakenly focusing on the background.
  • AF (Auto Focus) Illuminator: Briefly illuminating the subject, in low--or no--light conditions, the AF Illuminator helps establish a positive focus lock.
  • Multi-Pattern Measuring: Independently light-metering 49 points of the frame, Multi-Pattern Measuring establishes the optimum exposure, even when highlight and shadow isnÕt centered in the frame.
  • Scene Selection Mode: With 6 Scene Modes, parameters can be matched to the shooting conditions. Choose from one of the following: Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Landscape, Soft Snap, Candle, or Beach.
  • Optical Viewfinder: Provides accurate framing at eye level, great for added stability and following fast moving subjects.
  • Slow Shutter Noise Reduction: During long exposures, Slow Shutter NR captures the scene, and then the CCD noise pattern with a dark frame exposure. By subtracting the two, even long exposures can be clear.
  • Pre-Flash Metering: With a momentary pre-flash, the camera illuminates the subject and sets exposure through the lens for accurate flash metering. Adjustable flash level and red-eye reduction ensure great flash shots.
  • Auto Daylight Synchro Fill Flash: If the Multi-Pattern Measuring system determines the subject is backlit or in shadow, fill flash automatically fires to provide optimum exposure.
  • 4 Shot Burst Mode: Capture up to 4 shots (fine) or 6 shots (standard) at 1.3 frames/sec. even at 4 MP resolution. Perfect for high speed subjects or fast moving action such as sports.
  • Multi-Burst Mode: Captures 16 320 x 240 frames as part of a single 1280 x 960 image which plays back sequentially in the camera (selectable 1/7.5, 1/15, 1/30 second).
  • Playback Zoom: During playback, magnify the image up to 5 times with 17-step playback zoom for a closer look. Scroll to any part of the image with the cursor keys.

Direct Printing
The Cybershot DSCP41 offers PictBridge functionality, which enables you to transfer pictures from your digital camera to a compatible printer--such as the Sony PictureStation DPP-EX50--without a PC or image-editing software. Images can be viewed and selected for printing right on the camera's LCD, with menus for print quantity, date, and index print.

Storage and Transfer
Images are stored on Memory Sticks, and the Cybershot DSCP41 is compatible with Memory Stick Pro media--for storage up to 1 gigabyte. The included 16 MB Memory Stick will store 8 Fine and 14 Standard 4.1-megapixel images. The DSCP41 transfers images to PCs and Macs via a speedy USB 2.0 connection (which is backward compatible with USB 1.1 ports).

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Camera Ever!!!!
No wonder its the best selling digital camera of the year. Sure you need a larger memory card and different batteries but all I did was buy some lithium batteries and they are still full powered and they arent that expensive! Its not like the memory cards are a million dollars so whats to complain? A great camera for under 200 dollars! Bonus: it is so hott!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Value
The prints from this camera are as sharp as my Canon 35MM and I can carry it in my pocket. Excellent Value!

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely LOVE this camera!!!
I previously owned a 3.1 MP camera by Sony that I honestly thought didn't take such great pics. So, I was wary about buying another Sony. I did some research on this one and found that it got a lot of positive feedback. I love taking pics wherever I go, so size was also a factor in choosing the right camera for me. You will be amazed at how tiny this camera is! The pictures look great and when I print them at home, they look as though I just picked them up at my local photo stop. They have different settings so you can choose just the right lighting and it even has a feature that allows you to take black & white photos. Please note that you need to buy an additional media card because at 4.1MP, the card it comes with only holds 8 pictures! It's very easy to use and definitely makes a great gift idea. Two of my friends have went on to purchase this camera and love it. Oh, as with any digital camera... make sure you invest in rechargeable batteries.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!! $200 For a good looking 4MP Sony Digital Camera??!!
I should have bought this camera on Amazon instead of Circuit City's online site. Amazon doesn't tax you and will also give you a $25 coupon on some digital camera accessory purchases, and also if you buy $250 or more of electronics at Amazon, they'll give you a $50 certificate on your next purchase. So, if you buy this camera and then buy the SanDisk Memory Stick Pro (256MB for ~$60), you'll get that $50 certificate (act FAST!! offer ends AUGUST 1). With that $50 certificate, you can purchase those much needed rechargables on your next purchase, or go to Costco like me and buy that $20 Panasonic charger with 6 AA and 2AAA batteries in the package. Those batteries are good for digital cameras (2100 mAH). Not to bad for $20.

I've used this camera for about a month, and its going great. Decided to buy screen protectors for it (saw some at Radioshack for ~6.00), and also just purchased that SanDisk 256MB Memory Stick Pro. That'll store about 100+ pictures on 4MP. The camera does eat up a lot of batteries, so rechargables are a must. Quality is excellent, but the zoom is only pretty good. But hey, it's only $200 and what do you expect? My girlfriend has an Aiptek, and although their price on their products are ~100, the aiptek digital cameras can't shoot in low to no light conditions at all. This sony definitely can.

I also found a Minolta 4MP camera with opt. zoom for $220 at Amazon, but the appearance and size of it is not comparable to this Sony DSCP41. I'd pick this one even though it lacks the opt. zoom. Also, to the person that wrote about how this Sony digicam's lens is not protected, yah it isn't really that protected. Luckily the shutter comes on when it is not in use for about a min. or when you turn it off. Just not smudge the lens and clean it once in a while and it will be fine.

5-0 out of 5 stars Batteries
I don't own this but was thinking about it... it says "The camera is powered by two AA batteries (alkalines included, NiMH rechargeables recommended). It measures 4 x 2.13 x 1.38 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 ounces without Memory Stick or batteries. "
Realize the word recomended after rechargeables... it says alkline included... so that would be your problem ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
This stereo is really good if you need to bring it with you a lot. I've had mine for about a year and it still works as good as it did when it came out of the box. The only problem I had was that the antenna broke after the second week of having it, but still get good reception on the radio. It sounds really good, the bass on it is really deep and doesn't distort the sound, even at high volume.

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid Performer
I purchased this boombox just as a hurricane was threatening (the third of the season) and wanted a decent battery powered radio. The unit was well made and extremely convenient to haul around given the handle configuration. Additionally, the tuner's ability to capture even weak/distant fm radio signals was a great bonus. As always, Sony comes through and although I agree that you do pay a little more for the Sony brand, the quality is always there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid product you can depend on.
Before purchasing this unit I searched many sites on line for reviews, and kept finding the same 3 reviews, as if they were copied and spread from site to site because no one else took the time to review this product. So I will now add my thoughts, recently having purchased the Sony ZS-X1 boombox.

I will admit that I hesitated a bit before buying this because of several negative reviews I found. There's a review floating around saying the sound quality is terrible. The person did say that they were using it outside constructing decks or whatever, and admitted it sounded better at lower levels. I think I can understand how this boombox will not rock anyone's world outside, which is actually a difficult task with any portable player, given the ambient noise of the outdoors be it urban or suburbia.

My review is based on this; I am replacing a boombox I had in my kitchen, and I usually play music while doing the dishes (some ambient noise in itself, yet of course in an enclosed environment). I think this Sony unit sounds excellent. The 'megabass' feature truly does add bass that my last TWO units NEVER had... I believe my former units were in the $45-65 price range. This Sony is definitely a bang for the buck device, and I am truly happy with the sound and physical design.

I had no need for a waterproof device, yet my Sony sports Discman always outlasted any other brand due to the anti-shock, rugged construction, so I figured the boombox should also have a long lifespan. Are you paying for a name? Possibly... but it certainly is one I trust.

I confess that I cannot accurately comment on the longevity of this product, since I've only had the unit a few days. However, I just wanted to add a few thoughts to let people know that this device sounds excellent and best of all has a little low end punch to make music lovers of any genre enjoy. I bought the boombox based on Sony's reputation and my previous experiences with their products, and I have no regrets. Remember, it's a portable boombox, not a home theatre system.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best Cd player ever!!
One night I had my old boombox and it all of a sudden would not read cd's anymore the motor ran out it was a memorex so i went to Target and saw this boombox on sale for 89.99 I was surprised. I jump on my trampoline and i go through boomboxes really fast i have had this boombox for about 6 months and it is awesome. The bass sounds great and my neighbors couldn't beleive how great it sounded. I use it outside all the time and it always works for me and i have it on full blast while I jump with my neighbors on my trampoline and it is the best I have owned.

2-0 out of 5 stars volume disappointing
We bought this radio for the workplace. We work outdoors building decks. We liked the design because its easy to carry (very ergonomic). It seems pretty durable and it plays mp3's wich is a big plus....however
the sound is terrible! Its ok at low levels but distorts greatly on the high end. Also it doesn't get loud enough period. I would only recommend this to someone for the workplace maybe, who never intends on playing it loud. ... Read more

Consisting of an audio/video receiver and a complete 5.1-channel speaker package, the HT-DDW660 accepts stereo analog and direct digital bitstreams from DVD players, satellite receivers, and DVRs while processing everything from DTS and Dolby Digital 5.1 discrete surround signals to Dolby Pro Logic II, which generates multichannel surround from any stereo source--movie or music. The system's onboard 32-bit surround processor also features Sony's own Digital Cinema Sound System (Cinema Studio EX), broadening your surround listening possibilities.

Easy to assemble, the system includes all requisite cabling, including a subwoofer cable and a coaxial digital-audio interconnect for stereo or surround signals. (Depending on your DVD player or other associated gear, however, you may require an optical digital-audio cable for true surround sound--compatible but not included.)

Three composite-video inputs offer accompanying analog-audio inputs, accommodating most audio/video components and granting convenient AV switching: just channel the AV signals from your DVD player, VCR, and cable box (for instance) to the receiver, then route a single composite-video cable from the receiver's monitor output to your television. You'll need to supply your own composite-video cables, and if you have an older TV you may require a video modulator to convert the receiver's composite-video (yellow RCA jack) signal to an RF signal (which uses a thicker, threaded jack).

The included speakers cover left, right, center, and left/right surround, along with a 70-watt powered subwoofer with a bass port for heightened low-frequency slam. A host of radio presets (20 FM, 10 AM) put all your favorite stations (and then some) right at your fingertips, and the receiver's amplifier uses discrete output transistors for clean, quality power.

Optional mounting brackets or speaker stands (models WS-WV10D and WS-FV11D, respectively) simplify speaker placement, the assumption being that you'll want to place the center-channel speaker atop your television for optimal dialogue matching. All speakers are magnetically shielded to prevent distortion when placed on or near your TV.

What's in the Box
STR-K660P audio/video receiver, SS-VE66P speaker package, SS-WMSP66 subwoofer, a user's manual, all requisite speaker cable, a monaural RCA subwoofer interconnect, a coaxial digital-audio interconnect, and a Remote Commander remote control (model RM-466). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Deal
This is a steal at $199.00. I purchased this system as a gift for my mom. This is an awesome system for someone who wants surround sound but does not want a sub woofer that is going to rattle the walls. I cannot believe the clear and well balanced sound that comes out of the speakers. We hooked up a DVD player and Dish receiver to the system. If you use an optical cord, you don't have to switch the receiver back and forth to the DVD player and Dish receiver. The switch is automatically done. All and all if your looking for a excellent system and don't want to spend a lot of money, this is the one to get!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony entertainment system.....
I was looking around town for a decent sorround sound system and this caught my eye,5 speakers 1 subwoofer and the reciever for just over 200 dollars. They had a store demo so I gave it a listen and was quite surprised. There were two systems hooked up to the T.V., this one and a $350 sony system.Out of the two this one sounded the best,Rumbling lows great clarity and the perfect ammount of speakers for a medium large to large room. It was just overall a great buy for the price. I purchased it, took it home and I must say it has done wonders for My homes sound quality. when watching DVDs not only do i hear the sound but I feel it. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Value and totally awesome sound!
This thing pumps out some of the best sounding sound I've heard out of many systems and it's so amazingly cheap. You can't go wrong with this thing!

5-0 out of 5 stars holy cow this is the best
ok so youre looking for a home theater system to top off your big screen, dvd and whatever else you have and you think to your self the only way to get a nice sound and high volume is to get bose speakers and a 700 watt 7.1 system well youre wrong see this is the cheapest priced home theater system ive ever seen or heard that doesnt suck its great ill tell you this, this system is gonna give bose a run for its money it acctually sounds better than bose (just my opinion though) but ill tell you the subwoofer isnt much for super large rooms mainly because its passive (not powered)but i got to the store after i saw it in a magazine not expecting much and turned it on went through the menu to turn it to my sound preferences and it blew me away

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Value
After spending most of my money on my large screen tv I wanted a sound system to make it more theater like, but I didn't want to spend too much money. After waiting for a good sale on the top selling names, I happened to notice the Sony system without the dvd player and that appealed to me because I already have two dvd players. The salesman also gave this model a good review. You can't go wrong with this system. The sound is great and it was easy to integrate my existing vcr and dvd players. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Expectations met.
This has decent sound for a clock radio and the display is large and bright. It has a simple appearance which I like. There are no birdsongs or gushing water sounds.

4-0 out of 5 stars not bad, but Amazon's Item Description is BS
...there is no digital tuner so no 5 station presets; no "birdsong, gushing river" or any other nature sounds; no headphone jack; and sure as heck no freakin' subwoofer (not that any subwoofer small enough to fit in a clock radio wouldn't sound like crap)!WAKE UP, Amazon, and check your facts!!!

However other than that, this is the best fifty dollar CD clock radio on the market (which says a lot about how sad the CD clock radio market is, at that). For one thing, it actually has a fairly attractive (or at the very least, inoffensive) form factor, compared to the gaudy-colored cutesy round models Sony and other makers have come out with in the past---are these industrial designers smoking crack or what?

Also I was impressed at how easy all the controls were to use---didn't even have to look at the instructions, it was that intuitive and also very ergonomic. This is about the main thing that Sony still does better than anyone else, provide ease of use.The green LED display is just the right size and brightness, and a big improvement over the horrible backlit LCD displays that many other clock radios have. There is an external FM antenna that helps somewhat---better would've been a detachable external antenna so you could hook up a better one to it.The adjustable "nap" timer is a very handy feature, as was the wake-to-CD alarms (2 of them) allowingyou to choose which track you want to wake up to on the CD.I just use George Winston's "Winter" CD, it's nice and soothing.Even the buzzer on this thing is fairly pleasant.

I bought this mainly because I was tired of being jolted every morning by my Phillips clock radio's air-raid siren of a buzzer, and also because my city (Houston) has the absolute crappiest FM stations you could imagine.

What I really wish though is that Sony, Panasonic and other audio makers would just start putting alarm clocks in their minisystems so you could wake up to some half-decent sound quality music. This Sony is still way better than the Timex (hopeless!), Emerson, and other cheap generic garbage that Walmart sells but what can you really expect from tiny 1 watt per channel speakers?

Keep your expectations low though and this clock radio won't be too bad.I still could never bring myself to fork over three hundred bucks for the Cambridge cd clock radio.

What I really wish this clock radio had:1.a 9V battery backup like my Phillips had, 2. having the CD, radio, or buzzer gradually increase in volume early in the morning, 3. MP3 capability (the box says it can play CD-Rs but don't know which format exactly), and ESPECIALLY 5. a headphone jack so that I could hook up this thing to some cheap self-powered computer speakers which would be a HUGE sound quality improvement.

3-0 out of 5 stars Don't believe the ads for this item
The description of this product claims it will wake you up with a buzzer, radio, CD, or "the sounds of birdsong or a rushing river".It also claims to have 5 station presets, which implied to me that it must have a digital tuner.Neither claim is true. The fancy wakeup sounds don't exist and the tuner is the inferior analog style with a big dial and pointer that really can't pull in a clean FM station.Needless to say, there are no preset buttons.

On a positive note, it's a pretty good sounding small CD player and the clock has nice big numbers. But I was hoping to have a nice radio also -( ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
Paired with an Emerson HD8118 personal cd player, these are the most awesome headphones I have ever had. The only reason there is no fifth star is because there was a little too much bass in the sound (too much bass from 30mm little drivers? the second smallest driver size?) but not too much that it makes me complain. Sony will not let you down with this great but cheap pair of headphones. Buy, buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the price
I purchased these a few days ago at Best Buy. I wanted a good pair of headphones for home use. My Panasonic ear clips are more for use exercising and outside. Excellent sound on these! The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because the headband is a little snug on the top of my head (I have larger than normal head), so I have to have them tilted a little.

2-0 out of 5 stars weak treble and mids; well worth the $20
First off, these are well worth the $20 they cost, but the sound is nowhere near as good as 90% of the reviewers here say. The bass completely overwelms the sound, but most people *like* that. If you want more accurate sound or the ability to hear the highs and subtlety of music, you just can't get that with these. The only setting on an iPod that these sound the way they should is on Treble Boost--all the other settings allow the bass to overpower everything else.
They are definitely worth $20 though and since most people want to hear fat bass, I would recommend them to any non-audiophile. I'm borrowing them from a coworker and she loves them and has two pair, but she also admits she has no idea what good sound IS.
I have some $70 Audio-Technice ATH-M40fs headphones that render every detail of every sound recorded on a track. There is stuff in some music that you've never heard before because it is muddied up with all the bass. Don't get me wrong, M40s have plenty of bass, but only produces it when it is in the recording. But they are big and clunky, have a 12-foot cord and I don't want to bring them on the bus.
I'm torn with these V150s, since they are small, cheap and have very listenable sound. But also for $20 you can get the Sennheiser HD220's which cover the entire ear and supposedly have better sound. I've just never heard them.
Mainly I wanted to refute the claims that these are some of the best sounding headphones out there especially from some of the DJ's reviewing here. The sound is not that great and certainly not accurate. But you can definitely listen to them and you will get plenty of bass--even on the Bass Reducer setting on an iPod.
For $20 you can't go wrong, though plenty of people said they break easily. They feel like that is true, so don't step on them or put them in your backpack and lean against a wall.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good Bang for the Buck
I was about to buy the MDR-V300 but decided to try out the cheaper pair and see if the MDR-V300 would be worth it. After buying this pair I would say that I wouldn't go and buy the MDR-V300s, because the MDR-V300s have the same size earcups and don't differ much from this pair.
Negative Aspects
1. The earcups are not big enough to cover the entire ear, and so they can either sit on the ear or push up against the ear.

2. As well, if these headphones are worn for a long period of time they feel as if though they are putting pressure on the sides of the head. Sometimes it's only for an hour and the hurting begins

3. Occasionally you can hear the wires rubbing together when you're moving around slightly

4. They are a bit fragile. A weak spot is at the hinges where the earcups can be reversed

Positive Aspects
1. For the price they're selling at there is good bass and treble.

2. The cord is long and covers a lot of distance, but you might be annoyed if you wrap your cords around your ipod, cd player, minidisc or whatever because the cord is thick and doesn't stay in place. So just use a twist tie or elastic to fix that problem

3. The cords don't tangle up, and they're better than earbuds because if you're one of those people who can fit them in sometimes and then can't other times, these will be a good fit

Who They Might Be For
These headphones would be good for people who are looking for a pair of lightweight headphones that aren't too expensive but still have decent sound quality. But they're not for you if you're accident prone or might accidentally crush them with a little weight because they're fragile. As well, if you just want a nice heavy duty pair these might not be for you because the earcups are not a nice enough size. There are also better headphones that are made by Sony, JVC and Phillips that should be checked out that are around the same price range, or more if you're willing to spend

5-0 out of 5 stars Great bargain, great product
These headphones are a tremendous steal for under $15.I've been a loyal Sony Headphone user since I bought my first Walkman, oh so many moons ago.

These headphones won't give you a neckache (like heavier models), the sound quality is great, and the design allows for hours of comfortable wear.

One downside - the length of the cord seems a little long - for the average user (using these for a portable device or laptop) will find that there are a few feet of cord to spare.Since the cord is rubberized, thus less likely to fold away easily, it does tend to get in the way. ... Read more

The CDPCX355 plays audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, and you can program it to play CDs or tracks one by one, in random order, or in your own customized track order. With the jog dial, you can listen to snippets of music or skip tracks you don't like quickly.

For power users or music lovers with a deep library of CDs, the CDPCX355 can synch up with another CD changer. 2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Quality - Poor Service
My CD changer performed flawlessly for about a year and a half. I did not experience any problem with dropping the CD's as it was described by others, and I was delighted with my purchase. I was especially enjoying the shuffle play feature, which allowed me to play all my favorite CD's without having to listen them in the same order. After the initial happy period, the player suddenly started to skip on every CD I had. I cleaned the CD lens, but did not solve the problem. Since it was already out of warranty, I decided to send the unit to Sony, hoping that the good performance will return after the repair. Well, after about a month waiting the unit arrived from Sony with a broken door panel and in a non-operating condition. I had returned the player to Sony and after countless telephone calls and aggravation, I had achieved that they repaired the damages. Another month passed by and the unit finally arrived this time in working condition. After a short time however, it had developed a problem that certain disks just do not play. I have to power off and power on the player and it works again. In my opinion, a CD player should last longer than a year and half and this is not the Sony quality that we were all used to. I will be avoiding Sony products in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Keep It The On The Level!
I just had to write this review for all the reviewers who are complaining about this machine dropping their discs in the back of the unit or getting jammed or destroying their CDs.HELLO,READ THE MANUAL!THIS PLAYER MUST BE ON A LEVEL SURFACE SO IT CAN DROP THE DISC IN THE RIGHT SPOT!I use this machine for hours on end every day for over a year and it's never had any problems so GET YOUR LEVEL OUT!

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing
I purchased this product from an online retailer and had it for a total of five days before it broke. I had loaded about 200 cd's into it, and one jammed while it was playing on the random feature. The jammed CD was eventually broken in half in order to remove the rest of the good ones. The turntable ceased to work and would make a grinding noise when the power was turned on. I have never owned a Sony product that did not malfunction in some way (walkman, discman, playstation, playstation 2). This exact problem happened to a friend of mine with the same product, but he had his for over a year before it broke. (Just long enough to expire the warranty.) If you're looking for a high capacity changer, I highly recommend you look into a Pioneer or JVC changer first. As long as people keep buying cheap junk, they're going to keep making it.

1-0 out of 5 stars CD Destroyer
At first we were delighted with this Sony CD player, but it was not long before we determined that it was destroying our CD collection. Fortunately, we read a review on Amazon from another customer that lost many of his CD's to the same Sony unit. Over 20 of our CD's were damaged before we pinpointed the problem to the changer and replaced it with a Pioneer 200 disc changer (which we've had only two weeks but so far it appears OK). I am disappointed that Sony continues to market this defective equipment and as a result, we generally try to shop for other brands. If you value your CD collection, a Sony CD changer is likely to disappoint you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Super!
I've had mine for four years, and never had a problem. I use it every day, often for hours on end. I love that I can store my cds in it, and it's very easy to use. I think it's just great, and would buy another in a heartbeat. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best picture for SDTV with HDTV capability for under $1000
I have spent the last two years looking at HDTV capable TVs. The technology is changing and the prices are dropping so much that you could literally spend thousands of dollars today and several months later you might see a better TV with a newer technology for a much lower price than what you just paid. Beyond the fact that the newest equipment is becoming yesterday's technology every few months, you also have to practically be a digital video display scientist to understand all these latest technologies. If you don't believe me then go ahead and try asking some questions at your favorite electronics and TV store and you will understand what I mean. What is an HDMI interface ? How is it different from a DVI interface ? What is 3:2 reverse pull down ?Can I watch SDTV (standard definition or NTSC standard) on a wide-screen HDTV ? Your mind will spin and you will become more confused as the questions go on and on as you realize that buying a TV has become a full time job in itself. To complicate things even worse is that the television stations, cable TV providers, and satellite TV companies keep delaying or changing their minds about how they want to offer HDTV. Do you want to pay extra for HD digital cable or satellite or are you happy with the limited but free over the air HD broadcasts ? Do you need a DVR ( digital video recorder) for HD ? Does your DVR support MPEG4 compression ? Get ready to spend $500-$1000 on the latest HDTV DVR receiver for your cable or satellite company only to have it become obsolete in a year or two. I do not want to write a technical essay on the details of what all this stuff means because after two years of studying it myself I am just beginning understand all this HDTV video mumbo jumbo.

The fact is that I became tired of waiting for HDTV broadcasts to take over, for the prices to drop, and for the confusion to end.I wanted a TV to replace my eighteen year old 27" Sony Trinitron which still works but its picture image quality is beginning to show its age. There are problems with most of the big screen HDTV technologies out there.Plasma TVs don't last, LCDs have poor contrast and ghosting, DLPs have the rainbow effect, LCoS (or JVC's D-ILA) is good but its very new and still too expensive.I want a high quality wide screen HDTV but I could not justify investing $3000 or more on becoming a beta tester for the latest technology while all these companies attempt to bring an HDTV to the market at an acceptable price.

This Sony KV-32HS420 32" HD-Ready TV was the answer to my two year HDTV shopping dillema. You can buy one of these impressive TV's for under $1000 or even as low as the $800 plus range if you look hard and work your salesman for a deal. The image quality is great for standard definition, great for high definition, it will display HDTV wide-screen signals with an approximate size of 28" diagonal image width (with the more acceptably annoying black bars above and below the picture image), it has a variety of inputs including one standard only, three S-Video with standard, two component video, and the latest digital HDMI output. It even has audio video outputs for your amplifier. On the video side it has 3D Digital comb filtering, Sony's Digital Reality Creation processors, progressive scan and 3:2 reverse pull-down technologies. What all this means is that you are able to view your SDTV where 90% of the programming is in normal 4:3 aspect ratio but with Sony's state of the art digital image enhancement processing, HDTV (with an add on HDTV digital receiver) and DVDs in 16:9 wide-screen mode, with most of the inputs and outputs you need to hook up your favorite DVD player, VCR, video games, cable and satellite box, etc.The picture quality is excellent and depends on your source.I recommend you use at least an s-video or component video cable to transfer the SDTV (NTSC) signal to the TV. As you would for any newer HDTV you buy expect to spend at least $150 for higher quality cables (monster cable is a good brand) although they are worth it.

There are some negatives to this TV. It's a big, heavy, bulky, older tube technology that we are all familiar with. It takes two strong men to move the entire 165 lbs. but its balanced well andlifting it was actually much easier than I expected. On the positive note this state of the art tube technology with all the latest Sony enhancements make your image near or sometimes even better than the $3000 plasma, LCD, DLP, and other newer technology TVs at less than one third of the price. If you can put up with the negatives this is the best 32" SDTV 4:3 aspect ratio picture with HDTV capability for under $1000 that you have ever seen.

PROS: Excellent picture quality for both standard definition TV (SDTV or NTSC), DVD, and for high definition broadcasts (HDTV with a needed HDTV receiver).A variety of inputs and outputs including the newest and most flexible HD digital input called HDMI. Great for playing Sony PS2, XBox, and GameCube video games in higher definition modes. A great value for the money compared to other HDTV solutions.Save your extra money for when the very large big flat screen HDTVs drop in price, really improve in quality, and the widescreen HDTV channels are the norm.

CONS: Heavy, bulky, difficult to move, a big strong TV stand is needed, uses more power while in use than more expensive flat screen HDTVs.Smaller viewable picture than most larger wide-screen HDTVs.Displays wide-screen with the familiar black bars in a slightly smaller size than a 30" wide-screen HDTV. You must purchase a separate over the air HDTV receiver or get an extra HDTV compatible box from your cable or satellite company to view HDTV broadcasts. Compared to the excellent picture image quality the sound of the dual ten watt stereo speakers is of a very moderate quality.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Besides its size an weight issues there are a number of other lesser annoyances that you run into with while setting up this TV such as a limited preferences menu compared to Sony's XBR series of TVs and a curved front top surface prevents you from being able to place a center channel speaker or cable box on top of the TV. If you are used to a smaller screen size and you currently have a bad NTSC signal or poor image quality you will see more distortion from a bad image source and it will be enhanced on this or any other larger screen television. I have a standard definition Dish Satellite w/DVR box with a Monster Cable 3 brand of S-Video cable and the image quality is excellent. You will also want to spend a few hours reading the manual and adjusting your brightness, sharpness, color levels, digital reality creation settings, etc. Test out using the different DRC Progressive, DRC Cinemotion, and Clear Edge modes to your liking. If you are using a satellite or digital cable TV service in standard definition use very high quality video S-Video or for DVDs or HDTV sources use component video interconnects between the receiver and this TV. I recommend the Monster Video 3, Z-300, Professional M series or an equivalent very high quality brand. This Sony TV shows the smallest details from your source signal including any signal interference distortion or artifacts that you never noticed before on your TV of a lesser image quality. For example if you happen to see a trail of square block image artifacts around any object that moves it may actually be an effect from the original digital video signal decompression process in your source signal. Properly setting the DRC modes such as Clear Edge and Progressive modes and using high quality cable interconnects can minimize this undesired effect. Give yourself a few days to adjust to the larger image of this TV and for the tube electronics to warm up and adjust to your particular signal source. You will find that the stereo sound quality is not great but not terrible and ultimately you may want a better external sound system to go along with that clear and sharp Sony Trinitron picture. If you have already committed to going with HDTV wide-screen programming and you don't mind spending $1500 or more then I recommend Sony's wide screen HDTV XBR series and for the larger flat screen HDTV technologiestake a look at the reasonably priced JVC D-ILA, Mitsubishi DLP, or the more expensive Sharp Aquos LCD.

The Bottom Line: Compared to the best of the expensive big wide screen HDTVs or the Sony XBR series of tube HDTVs I would give it Four Stars. But with all things considered I give it Five Stars since for under $1000 no other current television can come close to the combined SDTV and HDTV picture quality and the viewing flexibility in the normal 4:3 or widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio of this " Best of All Worlds " Sony 32" HDTV Ready television.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality with an unbeatable price!
When I decided to purchase a new TV, I have done my research.I knew I wasn't ready to spend $2000 - $4000 on a plasma or LCD and yet, I wanted a TV with outstanding picture quality.
This TV offers the best features in its price range than any other HDTV.As a matter of fact, for merely $800 (at J&R) for a Sony TV, it beats the Panasonics, Toshibas, JVCs and Samsungs. The difference is quite obvious when you look at those TVs side by side in the store.
This TV offers additional input/outputs and is more than enough to hook up all my equipment.
The only downside is the weight, make sure you have at least 2 strong people carrying it to your TV stand.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent HD Ready Television
Fantastic value for the quality and convenience of HD!Both my wife and I are not quite ready for a $4000 LCD television with a total surround sound system yet, so we decided upon this 32" gem.We are quite impressed with all the additional features this set has such as 4:3 pulldown, two HD inputs (for my XBOX and DVD player), and dual 10watt speakers that stimulate surround sound. The picture quality is unsurpasssed, even with other HDTV's standing side by side (Panasonic and Samsung). The on-screen menus are quite intuitive and easy to adjust.I highly reccomend this television.

1-0 out of 5 stars Always 16x9 mode in 4x3 set
When the TV is on, it is always 16x9 screen. After you zoom it to full screen, image clarity suffers. To be worse, about 25% of the screen on both sides is cut off leaving 5 day weather forcast to 4 days. What is Sony thinking?Forcing people to buy 34hs420 for $500 more?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic image
After doing my homework I decided that the features (HDTV ready, progressive scan) were value priced. What I didn't expect was how beautiful the image is with the Reality Engine at work.No raster lines and super sharp with some of the best color I have ever seen on a monitor. So good in fact that one can easily see the signal quality difference between channels. You will not believe how good widescreen DVDs look on this set.Excellent.

Amazon.com Product Description

The 4-head SLV-N750 hi-fi VHS recorder from Sony is an inexpensive, high-quality VCR that is perfect for your home theater or anywhere in the house. The SLV-N750 provides everything you need in a VCR. It's easy to use and offers you superior recording quality, even when you are recording in extended-play mode.

With a minimum of setup required, you can begin using the SLV-N750 almost immediately. Hooking the VCR up to your TV or your home theater is simple, and the SLV-N750 will automatically program all available TV channels as well as set the clock for you.

Picture and recording quality are enhanced with Sony's four dual recording and playback heads. Don't be afraid of getting the most out of your videotapes. Even when you record a full eight hours on a tape, the SLV-N750's 19-micron recording heads and the digital auto tracking system ensure a great picture. The SLV-N750 offers stereo sound as well.

Skipping commercials just got easier. With one touch, the commercial skip feature of the SLV-N750 allows you to automatically skip 30 seconds on the tape at a time, up to two minutes at once. Another common nuisance is a thing of the past with the flash rewind feature. A full-length tape can be rewound in about a minute.

The stylish, silver-toned SLV-N750 VCR is designed to be a perfect match with Sony WEGA TVs but works seamlessly with any brand of television. The wide body of the VCR is intended to mesh with other home theater, stereo, and video components, and will offer an appealing visual match with larger TVs.

The SLV-N750 provides two composite-video inputs and two analog audio inputs: one set in the rear of the unit and one set in front for quick hookups of your camcorder or other devices. The VCR has one composite-video output at the back of the unit.

You can schedule up to eight programs with the easy-to-use recording timer, and the multilingual onscreen display makes it easy to set up the VCR or record programs with instructions in English, Spanish, and French.

1-0 out of 5 stars Expected more from Sony.
I knew my expectations shouldn't be set that high for a lower priced VCR, but the poor playback quality and even poorer recording quality was way below my already low expectations. I tried several different combination of VHS tapes and recording speeds, including premium high grade tapes, but got the same poor results from recordings; fuzzy, blurred, dark, and even audio was sub-par. Playback of retail tapes while not as bad as the ones I recorded were the worst I have seen from any VCR. I thought perhaps the unit had a factory defect, but upon reading these other reviews I see that it is most likely not the case. The other complaint I have of this unit is the rewind and forward mode is very annoyingly loud. It also lacks VRC+ and s-video input/outputs. I really expected more from Sony. I am returning this unit pronto and doing my homework before purchasing another VCR.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sony has lost their quality
I am on my second VCR of this same model and am going to return it for a different brand, don't waste your money on this machine. It cannot record or play tapes correctly, my old Magnavox that was falling apart did better than this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars i love it
i dont know what the other guy is talking about but this vcr was great and it works great and it is beautiful would have paid more for this item its great love it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother
Words fail to describe how poor this product is. If someone wanted an example of the shortcomings of VHS, they would use this machine.
Panasonic still has machines out there, for a lower price that blow this piece of **** away, for a lower price. So don't waste your time or money buying this unit, because you'll only end up returning it, and buying something else, like I did. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The MZ-NE410 Net MD Walkman recorder has everything needed to create great-sounding music mixes. In addition to transferring music at up to 32x speed (using its LP4 mode), the unit's SonicStage Jukebox software stores and manages digital music files, custom playlists, and music transfers, making it a cinch to transfer music to the device. The MZ-NE410 offers high-speed transfer from a PC via a direct USB connection, and it can record more than five hours of music on one 80-minute minidisc (using LP4 mode). It also uses Sony's skip-free G-Protection technology, which eliminates or reduces skipping during many active uses. The MZ-NE410 is compatible with the RealOne music player and the pressplay.com online music subscription service. It plays back ATRAC3 files and supports multiple Internet audio formats, including MP3, WMA, and WAV. The unit provides up to 56 hours of continuous playback on one AA battery.

The Easy Skip group-folder function helps organize songs into albums or groups. Once the music is transferred to the MZ-NE410, you can easily skip from group to group. Besides the bundled SonicStage software and SonicStage simple burner application, the MZ-NE410 includes software for creatively organizing music. MoodLogic software goes beyond typical jukebox applications, letting you compile music by mood or tempo rather than simply by artists and song titles.

MoodLogic corrects file information by identifying and retitling mislabeled tracks during ID3 tag cleaning. It also has a feature called Music Marker, which lets you "tag" music during playback. Once the device is reconnected to a PC, MoodLogic retrieves the marks, connects to the Musiclub Web site, and provides information about the song and artist and links to download new tracks, purchase CDs, or discover similar artists.

Note: The MZ-NE410's recording features and bundled software are not compatible with the MacOS operating system

Here's how you can use the included Sonic Stage Software to manage your music files:

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Hardware, Worthless Software.
After quite a while of wanting an MD player, I bought my MZ-NE410 at the local electronics superstore yesterday. I'll start with the bad. The included software is almost totally useless. I have never encountered such a buggy program past its alpha stage. It crashed four times trying to catalouge my media. After I got about 20 MP3s in my list, it alerted me to the fact that all but 6 were unsupported, and couldn't be converted!. That was enough, so I went online, and downloaded Real One player. It works like a charm. I've been using Musicmatch to make playlists, then importing em in Real One.

As for the good, this player is tiny, light, and has a cool matte black finish much like that on a B-2 or F-117. The amazing sound quality lets me hear things I never heard when listening to music through my computer, and I have a high quality home theater system connected to my comp. The player seems to excel with classical and soundtrack background scores, but everything else sounds incredible too. One unusual thing is that the included headphones actually sound great too. The display is tiny, but easy to read. It does only show track name at the beginning of a song, but you can switch to a mode that always shows the title quickly, with only a few clicks, so you can just switch back and forth if you really want to.

In closing, if you're in the market for an MD player, go with this unit, just make sure to download RealOne. I'm sure the newest high end models are great too, but they cost twice as much, and still have the same enraging SonicStage software.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stop Carrying All Those Cd's!
I've had this player for about 2 weeks now and in that time frame I've given away my portable cd player as well as my MP3 player. This little guy is the best! As with everything it could be better...but not much. It is the entry level product offered by Sony so you don't get some of the bells and whistles that you will with other players. Remember bells and whistles = $$. The portability factor alone makes it worth the price. I no longer have to carry books of cd's everywhere I go. I just pull the tracks off and make my own custom minicd's. I haven't had any problems with the software and I'm running XP (Professional). It could also be that I am using my 600 disc cd collection to make my minidiscs and not downloading files off the net. Incidentally, I use LP4 when recording and have come up with over 5 hours of music on one minidisc without the reported differences in sound quality... great for the road, the gym and the office. Battery consumption is awesome except when recording but then again, its only one battery. It would be nice if it had an AC Adapter and better headphones but for the price you're getting quite a bit already. Since it doesn't come with a carrying case you can purchase the armband case like I have and take your show on the road, blades, bike...just about everywhere. So Cool!! Get one you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Mindisc Player...Good Price!
I love this minidisc player. It is so easy to use and it was modestly priced. It it small so it fits in my pant pocket. I love how you can get 5.5 hours of music on one minidisc. It also lasts quiet a while on 1 battery. It has saved me lots of money. I love this minidisc player!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun gadget. Better than MP3 players
I have been eyeing on portable music players these days. Upon finding and getting this MD player, I'm quite sure I made a very good decision. These MDPs are just sold for very low price these days--happy price, happy quality.

So what's a good reason for my 4-star rating? First, I really can't trust HDD-based MP3 players. To my knowledge, HDDs are not made to endure severe shakings and bangings, which means they are not ideal storage device for portable use. On the other hand, the prices of HDD-based MP3-Ps run obscenely high.

Secondly, I love those small MDs, which are based on "magneto-optical" technology. For nuts, this technology is really the one made for long-term storage and multiple re-writing. Here, multiple doesn't mean clunky several hundred times like those of CD-RWs. MO technology used by minidiscs are meant for 1 million re-writes. Also, the chemical stability of MDs are far longer than CD-Rs or RWs, and with their hard-shell jackets built in, the physical strength of MDs can't just be compared with those of CD-variants.

Finally, because of the stability and strength of the MDs, I can burn them to build my own music collection. Thankfully, all Japanese-made MDs are colorful and just joyous to watch. Although they run upto $2.00 per pop, because you can erase and rewrite any compilation you don't like, you don't waste a cent from it.

Now, some worry that MDs use "lossy" compression format called ATRAC, but my ears, like many other sound-specialists' are, couldn't catch any difference. Just try them your self. You'll thank me for my advice.

Last words: This model doesn't have line-in or line-out. This one is pretty much a dumb box that can only receive data from a host computer. If you want to record without messing around with the computer, just get a better model.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Gadget Lover's and Music Lover's Dream!!! Best Value MD.
There are so many great reviews for this product. I don't want to be repetitive but this unit ROCKS!

PROS:
First of all, the price can't be beat. Compared with other Minidisk players, it performs fabulously and is easily the best value around.

Second of all, everything you've heard about battery life is TRUE! I've gone over 150 hours at a time without changing the battery. I'm talking about playing it every day at work for 3 weeks, not to mention when I get home at night. This alone makes this MD player head and shoulders above the more advanced models. Invest in some rechargeable batteries for digital electronics and you won't be disappointed.

Disk storage is good at the highest quality. You can still get several hours on a disk and the sound is awesome.

CONS:
I really want to give this unit a 5, but a lot of the criticism can't be dismissed. TRUE: The software is bad. Sony's proprietary ATRAC3 music format ads an extra annoying step. There are limits to how many times you can record music on a disc. The display really does not give you any useful info. The panel controls are pretty bare (notice, no "Record" button) and you cannot record voice directly with this unit as with other MD players. Also note, this unit does not have the car-kit or wireless car radio play options of other Music players. Some MD players come packaged with these things, or other MP3 players like the Ipod have these features. Not to mention the Ipod will store Gigs of music; it will just set you back 3 times as much money. These cons all need to be factored in to your comparison with other units.

THE BOTTOM LINE:
Some have noted performace loss over time. Simple: get a MD cleaning disk to clean your lense. This unit is very durable and has a long play life. Software updates can also solve a lot of recording problems.

The cons pale in comparison with the pros. The sound quality is great. The unit is THE BEST VALUE in digital music. The battery life is UNBELIEVABLE. The MDs are getting CHEAPER BY THE DAY. An added bonus: Now that the new HD standard is out, you can buy these at deep discounts. Take advantage.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy by name, reap the benefits...
I had purchased the Network Walkman after my iPod was stolen.I had used the iPod and discovered all of its perks and downfalls. The Walkman, to me, is 10x as sexy and as functional. The only downfall is the digital equalizer, which doesn't help the sounds quality whatsoever. What you need is a good pair of headphones. The songs go on a lot easier than the iPod's music match and iTunes. My problem at the moment is finding an FM transmitter as good as the iTrip.Buy this product, it comes in your favorite color.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Sound is Incredible but I had to exchange the original
I bought the Sony HD3 in lieu of the IPOD because of all the reviews I read stating that Sony had the best sound. I was not disapointed with the sound--it's amazing. HOWEVER, I had to exchange it after only four days because the flimsy power button bent when my fingernail accidentally slipped under it. The power button on this device is very thin and should anything get caught underneath it, it will easily bend. This is something Sony should consider modifying with the HD5 that is scheduled to be out this year.

Also: The software is not the best but not as bad as some reviews would lead you to believe.

The best reason to buy this MP3 player: The sound--it's awesome. Also the battery life is a plus but don't count on getting 30 hours unless you convert to the Sony format.

4-0 out of 5 stars NW-HD5 IN MAY
IF you are considering this you might want to wait until may when sony releases the NW-HD5, it has an even longer battery life (40 hours ATRAC, 30 hours Mp3) and a user-replaceable battery. Pictures are on engadget.com

5-0 out of 5 stars Spend some TIME with it, and fall in love
If you spend some time with this player it is equal to or better then the ipod. I've used an ipod before and its great. But when researching to choose which player I wanted to invest $300 on, I downloaded the manual from each of the players respected manufacturers (apple, sony, iriver, creative). When directly comparing the HD-3 to the ipod (the "most popular player") they both have the same annoying features. Ipod uses only itunes to transfer music and sony uses sonicstage. Sonicstage version 3 was pretty simple to figure out. I loaded up my library from my pc and then transfered album by album to the hd3. It was the same procedure the ipod manual describes.
The HD3 does have a playlists option in which you bookmark songs. Ipod calls it "on the go something" but both have you holda button to add the track to a my favorite playlist which is a few menus away from the opening screen. Its no problem.

Shuffling is also easy to figure out. It's about the same explanation you would see with any sony audio device. I mean the manual came from Japan but its written in english. So stop whinning. The HD3 actually gives you more shuffling options than ipod. You can shuffle all the tracks, or all the albums, or all the artists, or choose to shuffle tracks within an artist or album group.

Overall the HD3 has way better sound and a much longer battery life than any other player including ipod. Plus if the battery dies YOU can replace instead of paying someone to do it. The HD3 is also smaller, sleeker, and looks cooler. Plus when do sony products break? I still use a six year old cd player.

So don't let U2 convince you to buy an ipod. Buy a freaking awesome player that is unique and much cooler.

No I don't work for sony, I work at Publix. Its a grocery store.

4-0 out of 5 stars Apple better watch out..but Sony has a few things to fix.
Sony has released a sure threat to the iPod. The HD3 is sleeker and has a better battery life than the iPod. The UI isn't the greatest but still quite good. The Sonic Stage software is what baffles me. Sony had a winner until they decided to throw in the SS software which I must say needs a lot to be desired. Its not the most user friendly and it frustrating at times.

Having said that this product is hands down better than the iPod. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ideal for Dictation
I found this Sony recorder perfect for making quick dictation notes, so much so that I constantly use it and may well purchase a second one as a backup. It is ergonomically well designed, the appropriate control buttons easily accessed, and doesn't attempt to look fancy like theOlympus models. It has a clear voice replay, with a very well designed Cue and Review Control (rather oval shaped, so you don't accidentally hit any wrong buttons), the record button is prominently red and the microphone silver, so it's hard to make any mistakes in recording or accidentally erasing information. Similarly, the Pause control reveals a red spot when activated, so you don't have to guess if the machine is actually on pause or not. An unexpected feature is the stereo sound when you plug in a pair of earphones: unlike your standard tape recorder that will only provide sound through one phone in a headset, this recorder feeds sounds to both sides of a headphone. As the manufacturer description indicates, it has two speeds to extend cassette length. If you want a personal dictation recorder that is as small as can be expected, is inconspicuous and literally compact, then this is a wise and economical purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars I have no idea what your talking about
Your recorder must have a fault mine doesn't make any sound at all and doesn't use any battery power when not listening or recording. That's what the red light is for.

Advantages:
One touch recording
Speed of tape switch
Clear voice thingy
Looks pretty cool

Disadvantages:
No voice activation

1-0 out of 5 stars No on/off switch?
I would not buy this product again. My unit emits a constant electronic hiss even when all controls are in the neutral position. As far as I can tell, there is--incredibly--no switch that disconnects battery power when the unit is not in use. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The CDPCX455 400-disc CD changer puts hours upon hours of music at your fingertips with features like cross-fade sound, text display, and an organization feature that makes it easy to find your favorite songs and albums. Because the CDPCX455 plays MP3s as well as CDs, you can expand the already-massive capacity of the player, and literally play the CDPCX455 for days on end.

The CDPCX455 can play audio CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs, as well as CDs with MP3 files. You can program the CDPCX455 to play CDs or tracks one by one, in random order, or in your own customized order. A history search allows you to return to CDs that you have recently played, and you can browse through all of your CDs by name, so you'll never lose track of what CDs are in the player or what order they are in. You can also custom-label CDs stored in the CDPCX455 for quicker retrieval. The CDPCX455 includes a jog dial control that gives you quick access to individual CDs or tracks. With the jog dial, you can listen to snippets of music or skip tracks you don't like quickly.

For power users or music lovers with a deep library of CDs, the CDPCX455 can synch up with another CD changer. You'll never have to wait for a disc to change to keep the music playing, thanks to a cross-fade feature that brings the audio of one CD down at the same time that a new disc starts to play. By adding a second changer, you can expand your access up to 800 CDs total, and both changers can be controlled by a single remote.

The hybrid pulse digital-to-audio converter reproduces a warm, natural sound from your CDs, making you feel like you were there when the music was recorded. You can easily connect the CDPCX455 to an audio receiver with analog RCA-type and digital optical outputs. An analog connection instantly synchs the CDPCX455 to another changer, and a Control A-1II cord links the CDPCX455 to any other Sony components in your audio system or home theater. A headphone jack is also featured.

They SAY they're fully linkable, but use extreme care when buying more that one unit for your very extensive collection. These things are all very intelligent machines-- too smart for their compatability with each other. They are "Master Drives," according to one Sony Rep, and are therefore not set up to be "Slaves." Sony will tell you that you can access 800 Total CDs, but instead of being able to purchase 2 of these guys at 400 each, you've got to get this one and 2 more 200 CD players. If you DO buy 2 of these, you have access to all 400 in your primary, but only 200 of the 400 possible in your secondary.

Now that I'm done writing to a miniscule portion of the public that might want to access 401-800 discs, I love mine. It's a convenient, wonderful machine. I feel like I'm in control of an entire radio station when I tell it to shuffle. Have fun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Forget the weaknesses, it's a ll in the sound!
I've read the other reviews (and you should too). Yes, the display isn't big enough. Yes, I am REAL frustrated that I can't change from continous play to shuffle without stopping. But, the bottom line is that EVERY family in the world NEEDS one of these. Think about it- 400 bloomin CD's! Not only YOUR favorite music in an amazingly personal and stirring random aural experieince, you can MUCH more easily tolerant the OCCASIONAL -let's say less than favorite tune, it is the primary appliance for ANY family.

This is my second CD changer. I out grew the first 200 CD changer, and yes the A1 II cable is an antequated technology and a hard to find critical stinking "leettle" cable that is required to make the whole unit function ... - because it enables the second CD changer in your component system queue up the next song as the current one is playing. But COME ON FOLKS. 400 of your favorite CDs all in your own personal mix!! Unless you are a drone, top-pop radio listening, commercialistic fool, this is a must have!

Buy one today! "Heck", buy two of 'em! Best value for ANY money you have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Product
It is difficult to get hold of all those CD's crammed into it, but if you add the SAVR and JukeBox from Panther Studios, it becomes a dream machine! I can see all the CD's I have and make play lists that shuffle between my changers like butter. I love it!

1-0 out of 5 stars If You Value Your CD Collection, Don't Buy This CD Changer.
I owned a perfectly wonderful Pioneer, 100 Disc CD changer. Since my CD collection had approached the 400 mark, I decided to purchase the Sony CDP-CX455 unit, so that I could randomly listen to my entire collection, without constantly changing CD's. After reading some of the reviews on Amazon, I was reluctant to purchase this unit. Unable to find another unit that would accomodate 400 CD's, I decided to take a chance and went ahead with the purchase. Big mistake! After spending hours loading the CD's into the system and setting it to play on random(shuffle), I soon discovered that several of my CD's were skipping. I am meticulous with the handling of my CD's, so I know that the problem was not caused by my mishandling of them. I removed the CD's that were skipping, hoping that this was an isolated incident. The next day, I turned on the unit and again set it to play songs randomly. Once again, some of the CD's started skipping. When I removed them from the unit, I noticed that there were scratches on both CD's. I then called up Sony to explain to them that this particular CD changer has an engineering defect, and that it scratches CD's. Their response was that they have had no reports of such incidences. I asked to speak with a supervisor, who informed me that this CD changer has been taken off the market and is not being replaced with a similar unit. He said that stores still had them in stock, but once the stock was exhausted there would be no more available. I then asked him why they were not replacing this unit with another 400 CD changer model, and was told that they are getting out of the CD changer business, in favor of DVD/CD combo units. I offered the comment that the reason they are not replacing the CDP-CX455 with a similar unit, is because they know that the CDP-CX455 has an engineering defect, and they are not capable of building a 400 CD unit that is problem free. At any rate, I called the store where I purchased my changer from, and told them that I was returning it because it was scratching my CD's. I then started the long process of removing the CD's from the system and was astounded to find that almost 1 out of every 3 CD's had been scratched by this CD changer. I called back Sony, and their attitude was basically that they couldn't care less. Once you buy a Sony product, you are on your own. Their customer support is non existent. Despite the fact that over 100 of my CD's have been damaged by this unit, their response was that they were sorry, but there is nothing they could do about it. Based on this incident, I will never purchase another Sony product again. If you are planning to purchase this CD player, my advice to you, "Buyer Beware."

4-0 out of 5 stars Makes listening to music easy.
This is the first CD changer that we purchased. What a difference it has made! We don't have to keep changing discs and we can jump to any disc we want quckily without having to search through a stack of CD's. My partner has his favorite CD's under his "artist's" name and I have mine under my name. We can then play our set anytime we want either in continuous mode or shuffle. We have 198 more "artist's" slots that we can program any number of discs to. If you have a combination of CD albums and individual tracks you can program upto 32 of them in one program. There are three program slots. Entering data was a pain but it was easier with a key board but once that is done you can sit back and enjoy the music. We made a list of all our CD's so we could refer to it. Also we put the CD's in different categories and left several slots open in each category so we can add more CD's in the future. I called Sony's customer service number twice on a Saturday afternoon and got through each time with out any problems. You first have to go through this very "real" sounding voice recognizing machine but then you will get to speak to somebody and they were very helpful with some functions that I did not follow.
We have used this great gadget for about two months and we have not had any scratches on our CD's. We are very happy with this product! ... Read more
