4-0 out of 5 stars First impressions for the Sony DPP-EX50
One of the first things I noticed upon opening up and unpacking the box, was that Sony does NOT include any ink (ribbon) or paper for this printer in the box. Not even one sheet. So, to avoid disappointment about not being able to immediately start using the printer, make sure you buy one of the ink/paper packages too.

The included software is "so-so". Sony's included photo application is rough, and I fell into fatal errors with it quite easily. Their photo application works directly with the printer, bypassing Window's printer drivers, which brings me to my next software comment.

It also includes a printer driver for Windows that allows other applications, presumably for photos, to print using the DPP-EX50. However, while it worked, it had a little annoying problem where the image was slightly off centered. This results in "borderless" prints actually getting a thin white border on the bottom and right sides. I found no way around this bug, including trying to manual re-size the image slightly larger, and trying to move it slightly down/right.

While the DPP-EX50 prints absolutely wonderful pictures, I am patiently waiting for Sony to release some software fixes.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Portable Printer
If you're going to a wedding or birthday party and want to leave some prints for the celebrants, the EX50 is a great toy to have. You can print up to 4x6 with very high quality on smudge-free paper - and for its intended use, that's important. You can print directly from Memory Stick or Compact Flash, or you can strap it to your laptop and work that way. You can use the video out jack to view the images on a TV. All this in a compact little package for about $180 - not cheap but this is a good quality tool.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an AWESOME printer
This printer is awesome! THe colors and print outs are so beautiful and i take this with me everywhere. my mom and i are now starting to take family photos at our house parties and printing them out on this printer for them to take home. its so neat and easy to use. I learned how to use it on the tv within minutes and actually prefer the tv then the computer.

I think the only problem is trying to find the paper. I can find the 4x6 post cards everywhere.. but the smaller ones are a little harder to find and I end up driving atleast 45 minutes to the nearest Sonystyle store to purchase it.

all in all this is a great picture especially if you have a good quality 3.0 megapixel camera. (The less quality the camera is, the more grainy the picture with be.)

sidenote: the pictures usually come out depending on how the pictures are taken with the camera. If the digital camera shows a bad picture, chances are the printer with print the bad picture.

p.s i think that printers that are so compact should come with a bag like camcorders and cameras do.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing little printer
If you want photo lab quality pics in the comfort of your home--this printer is it. It is Exif and Pict bridge compatible. You can print from your TV, PC (you will need to buy a USB cord), camera or memory card. The colors are gorgeous and the images are crystal clear.

The printer is small enough and light enough to take with you--just plug it into your camera or TV-and you have instant pics to give everyone on your vacation.

The photo packs are easy to install and if you don't like the color or contrast of the picture no need to take it back to the lab---fix it on the computer and make another print. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little player with some quirks
How much you like Sony's new flash-memory Network Walkmans is going to depend on what you use them for. I use mine to load seven or eight CDs onto for jogging, walking, and for my car. If you have a large collection of MP3s and other formats you want to load on and off of it, you might find another player that suits your needs.

Ripping CDs to Sony's ATRAC3 format at fairly low bit-rates sounds pretty darn good for such a small player, not to mention that ATRAC is a gapless format, which is excellent for dj-mix CDs, live albums, and so on. MP3s, however, occasionally crop up with some weird digital artifacts that I've noticed. It doesn't ruin them by any means, it's just up to you as to how good you want your MP3s to sound. Like other reviewers have said, though, the sound (regardless of format) is a little muffled. However, Sony was smart enough to allow users to adjust bass and treble levels on the unit (and save two seperate presets!). Cranking the treble to max remedies the muffled sound to a large degree, creating a very bright sound, if not exactly a colorful one.

Besides saving your own sound adjustments, the unit also lets you browse tracks on the player by "groups" (albums, playlists, etc.), which is very handy. Playback features are numerous, and let you shuffle songs by group, or every song, plus a variety of repeat options. The display is even customizable. One minor issue is the tricky hold/group slider and the sunken menu buttons on the back, but for a player this size there's probably not too much they could do. The rocking-faceplate buttons, hoever, are a neat trick. As for Sony's SonicStage software, at least it's semi-intuitive; I've seen a lot worse (ahem, Rio).

My 20GB Karma ruined me for features a lot of other hard drive (let alone flash) players didn't give you. Surprisingly, my little Network Walkman can keep up, with gapless playback, customizable sound, and excellent battery life, not to mention how cool it looks. Any one who is looking for a fun, inexpensive way to carry around some of their favorite tracks would do well to pick one of these guys up.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent little player better than Shuffle
I wanted to buy a small, flash-based music player primarily for jogging and taking to the gym, so naturally I compared the 2 premier products out right now, Sony PSYC vs. Ipod Shuffle. The PSYC comes out on top in SO many ways.

1) LCD screen a huge plus for navigating through albums and artists. Shuffle has no screen.
2) Tremendous amount of features for such a little player, such as shuffle, repeat, browse by artist or browse by song, sound equalizer...all intuitive to use. By contrast, the Shuffle practically forces you to play your songs on random. Looking for that favorite album? Good luck finding it with the shuffle.
3) ATRAC3Plus coding allows you to store MANY more songs in 512 MB compared to Apple's AAC. 64 kbs in ATRAC3Plus provides excellent sound quality, even through stock ear phones.
4) 1 AAA battery = 70 hours! That means no need to constantly have to plug the blasted Shuffle into your computer to recharge everyday.

Sony has made an excellent product here, not to mention one that is very asthetically pleasing. You want substance AND style, get the PSYC.

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool and easy
After looking at Ipod shuffle, I opted for the PSYC at a few bucks less. It holds more songs if you use Sony's ATRAC system and has more navigation options than the Ipod. The sound quality is great even on the supplied earbuds. The software is easy to use, though the translations from Japanese can be strange in the instruction manuals. It runs on a single AAA battery for lots of hours, no worry about recharging. It also looks a lot neater than Ipod and not everyone is carring one, yet. Great LCD display. All in all a good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully lightweight and amazing battery life
Sony calls this new line of flash-based, coin-like (but they are thick coins!) MP3/ATRACT players the Psycs, and their new-age styling does psyc you out.Which is not a bad thing, as they are more euro-cool than the rather bland and boring iPod and the downright butt-ugly iRiver. The more I look at the Psyc, the more I like its looks.

The new Psyc MP3 player features 512MB of flash memory, which is great for those of you jogger jocks out there. You can shake this thing violently and it won't skip a beat, unlike those hard drive-based players. Before you insert an AAA battery, the Psyc weighs in at an amazingly light 0.9 oz. -- that's right, folks, it's less than an ounce! With the AAA battery, my guess is it's about 2 oz.It's very small although, relatively speaking, it looks a little thick.(About 0.75 in. at its thickest part.)

What, you ask, it uses an AAA battery?Yes my friend, and this one AAA alkaline battery can power the player up to 70 hours! That's almost three full days of continuous playing. The phrase "up to" here means that in order to get all 70 hours of playing, you must 1) play ATRAC3Plus songs encoded at 48kbps and 2) do not press buttons or do random play (i.e., just leave the player playing sequentially). In the real life we like to skip a song, fast forward, random play (a.k.a. shuffle play), turn it on and off and on and off, and most importantly, we play MP3 songs. All these operations reduce the battery life.Given my experience with previous Sony MP3 players, my estimate is one good AAA battery should last you 40 hours or more.(With my beloved Sony NW-HD3, I routinely get the advertised battery life of 30 hours even when playing MP3 files.)

Of course, the use of AAA means you get an abundant and ready supply of cheap power source, and you can trek in the Amazon for weeks on end without having to worry about finding an AC outlet.

The Psyc, which comes in three colors (green and blue for the 512MB version, and orange for the 256MB version), has a nice backlit LCD screen, so you always know what you are playing as opposed to having to guess as on some other certain MP3 player. It plays MP3 as well as Sony's ATRAC songs. If you are an ATRAC fan you'll like the sound quality of this little player; it's at least as good as Sony's MD players. For MP3's, the sound quality is a bit "muffled" compared to my NW-HD3 20GB player, but still quite good if you pair it with a good pair of headphones (i.e., ditch the stock earphones).

Sony still has a long, long way to go in the user interface department, as this has always been its weakness, whether it's digital music or digital video or anything else. The Psyc is not hard to use; its basic functions are no-brainers.But, for anything beyond play/pause/skip, its interface, whether on the unit itself or on the PC transfer side, is still not polished and was clearly designed for a Japanese audience -- Japanese consumers reportedly love to play with complicated gadgets; no surprise given how elaborate sushi-making and origami are.We American consumers like things that are elegant and simple, and Sony has a lot of room for improvement in this regard.

In short, I don't think you'll be disappointed in the new Psyc flash-based MP3 players. They are stylish and lightweight and lasts forever on cheap AAA batteries. They have good sound quality and are priced right.Just be prepared to spend some time with the manual and experimenting a little. If you are stuck, you are welcome to e-mail me at gadgester @t hotmail with your questions.

2-0 out of 5 stars Fake mp3 player!
Got mine (blue version of this) from Sonystyle.com just yesterday. After playing with it for a few hrs here are my impressions.

First and foremost the mp3 playback quality is atrocious. 128kbps files sound like 64kbps or lower. Even my no-brand-name cheap mp3/cd player has better mp3 quality.

I suspect the codec/DSP in the Sony are still designed for their propreitary ATRAC3 plus format with a secondary mp3 support. In fact converting a mp3 file to Atrac3plus (with included software) sounded better than just mp3 file. Inspite of this hassle, it was still below mp3 quality from other players.

The battery life seems to be in line with the specs listed by Sony. No complaints on that front. The backlight LCD display is a nice bonus too. The size/volume is significantly more than the iPod Shuffle.

The user interface is more loaded than such a small palyer can withstand. As a result it more cumbersome and confusing than Apple/iRiver players.

In short this awkwardly named "mp3" music player is a step in right direction for Sony but is still below average. Price is right but not the quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER EXCELLENT SONY CAMERA
Before you buy DSC-V1, here are some tips about it:
The camera is excellent, considering image quality and features. You can manually set the functions or set the automatic mode (helps beginners but provide features for more advanced photographers - get the manual in Sony Website). The image is better than P92, for V1 has bigger Carl Zeiss lens. P92 is very very easy to use, but V1 has a range of features not available in P92.
1) it requires extra memory stick (which, as you might now is more expensive than compact flash). 256Mb is recommended. 128Mb provides 80 photos full-quality. (any 5.0 Camera, whatever the brand, needs extra memory though.)
2) Spare battery would be useful. The NP-FC11 lasts about 80 minutes and take 2hrs to recharge.
3) Unlike old Sony cameras, you can take pictures faster (whether P32, P92 or V1), but when using V1 with flash, you need to wait few seconds to energy recharge (a bad thing if you need the flash and don't want to miss a thing) - but it's like 3 seconds.
4) A very nice feature is the nightframing and nightshots - it has infrared visor for very dark places.
Comparing to P92, the improvements are amazing. I used them both and found P92 easy to use, but V1 has many useful features, better for those who want to make creative or art photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars sony has a topnotch 5MP camera in the DSC-V1
the sony dsc-v1 is a top-notch camera that is more portable than its competition. it offers full manual control, 5MP resolution, and 4x optical zoom. i do have a few nits though...

pros:
- 5MP, 4x optical zoom.
- great image quality.
- above average resolution, good tonal balance, good color response.
- full manual control.
- images exhibit very low noise, even at higher ISO.
- image processing parameter control (contrast, saturation and sharpening).
- very fast auto focus!
- quick startup, fast shot-to-shot times (except when shooting TIFF).
- fast write times to memory stick.
- has NightFraming which allows you to focus and compose your scene in total darkness with the aid of the infrared emitter, then shoot a full-color shot using the built-in flash. very cool.
- better than average movie mode.
- compared to the competition (canon g5 and nikon 5400), the dsc-v1 is more compact: dimensions are 4.0"W x 2.6"H x 2.3"D weighing 10.9 oz.
- solid build quality.
- bright, high resolution LCD monitor with anti-reflective coating that works.
- battery charges in-camera, charger doubles as AC adapter.
- hot shoe for external flash (limited to specific sony flashes, though).
- many optional accessory lenses (telephoto, wide angle, filter lenses) available.
- histogram in Live view, Record review and Playback modes
- USB 2.0 means faster downloads.

cons:
- colors a bit washed out.
- noise levels higher than expected
- some purple fringing.
- mild chromatic aberrations visible.
- higher redeye occurrence.
- RAW format not supported.
- saving a TIFF file locks up the camera.
- continuous shooting capability limited to 3 frames.
- minimum ISO setting at 100.
- zoom control is oriented differently so it will take a few tries to get used to it.
- ergonomic issues: tiny menu and resolution keys, very easy to block the flash and optical viewfinder with fingers, left index finger falls right on top of the pop-up flash, suppressing it.
- lots of key functions are buried in menus.
- below average battery performance.
- no separate user settings.
- like most sony products, you pay a premium, pushing up the price.
- expensive memory stick pro cards.
- uses a proprietary battery so add a few bucks to buy a spare (or maybe two given the battery performance).
- the supplied 32MB memory stick is inadequate - again, more $$ for more memory.
- you'll need to remove from tripod to get to the battery or memory stick.

sony has succeeded in delivering a camera that has virtually the same feature set as canon's g5 and nikon's 5400 but in a more compact package. it's not perfect though. RAW format is not supported and writing a TIFF file still takes way too much time. and there are some ergonomic nits that is uncharacteristic of sony. still, this is a great package and worthy of consideration.

i hope this helps your buying decision. peace.

4-0 out of 5 stars It's a Sony.
Excellent picture quality, I am no expert, yet I can easily see the diffence between my pictures and my friends' Canon and Kodak cameras. Size is pretty decent, I carry it everywhere in my pocket ( that's if I don't mind a bulky pocket though ). The night vision makes people go aaaawwww, but is not as practical as it initially sounds. I got a 256Mb pro stick for movies, and I am pretty happy with it. I could use a stronger optical zoom, and certainly a different location for the built-in flash.

Bottomline, I love my camera. It's helping me store my memories in better quality than ever.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sony CyberShot DSC-V1: To Buy or Not To Buy.
I must begin by explaining that I got back into the digital camera market having to replace my Kodak DC240 which was purchased (and cutting edge with 2.0MP) in 2000. The DC-240 finally went dead and I took it to Best Buy who, on their warranty, gave me the purchase value towards another camera, and thus the DSC-V1. I have had the DSC-v1 for a little over a week now and have some interesting insights. I generally look to Amazon for reviews and hope that you will find this one useful. Please know that I am not a professional, and don't know a whole lot about photography (had a couple of classes in undergrad.)

To set this up, I have a friend who, upon hearing that I had this money to spend, recommended that I buy a digital SLR. Sounded great, but I wanted something that would fit into my pocket. I was looking at a Kodak with 10x zoom, but when I went to purchase it, I realized that it did not fit into my pocket. I am more prone to grabbing my camera if I can just toss it in my pocket and take it to a party, to shoot art, or take pictures of my dog! So now to my take. Please note that these are not necessarily pro's or con's but observations.

-5MP WOW! Image quality is great. Coming from a 2MP, I am blown away!

-USB2.0 is fast and a definite sales point to this camera. Make sure you have 2.0 on your computer if you are planning on shooting large images!

-The rechargeable battery is nice. I don't know if I am sold on it yet though. I am still pondering buying another battery should I be on vacation away from an outlet.

-People have complained about the controls, I have big hands and they are not a problem.

-I do have a problem holding the camera. Go hold one before you buy it. I like the camera and knew this going into it. My left hand has the tendency to hold down or cover the flash, My right index finger has the tendency to cover the viewfinder. I will learn to live with it...

- The camera has tons of features, which was one of my reasons for purchasing it. They can get a little confusing though.

-If you are looking for a simple point and shoot, or a camera for your grandmother, this is not for her/you.

-The display, although small, is adequate and clear.

-I was looking into cameras with a greater zoom. This 4x works great.

-The camera works quickly with 5MP images allowing you to quickly zoom in and out and scroll through them. The LCD displays them clearly

-Menus are clear and precise.

-The ability to control aperture, shutter speed, and focus is great. It gives me the ability to treat this camera like an SLR.

-The night framing/shot features are nice for shooting at night or indoors. They allow you to frame a scene on the LCD before shooting the image.

-The hot-shoe is a nice feature as I can connect this camera either to a professional flash OR a professional lighting kit to allow me to shoot artwork.

All in all, this is a great camera. If you are just looking for a point and shoot, this camera is not for you. It is a lot of camera packed in a small package. Be prepared to read the lengthy manual several times before getting SOME of the features down. Also beneficial is some knowledge of basic photography, as terms such as metering, ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed are used often, and to fully understand the camera, working knowledge of these terms is necessity.

Amazon.com Product Description

Home theater may be the rage, but there's no getting around the need for affordable, high-quality music playback, and Sony's STR-DE197 stereo receiver can be a huge help in that department. The integrated amplifier pumps out 100 watts per channel across both its 2 channels and uses discrete output transistors--that is, transistors in place of cheaper and lower-quality integrated-circuit chips--to ensure high-quality music presentations.

The receiver features an FM/AM tuner with 30 station presets (20 FM, 10 AM) and a UniCommander remote control with phosphorescent glow keys for easy access, even in the dark. Separate A and B speaker outputs (stereo left/right) let you listen to the same program across two sets of speakers placed in different parts of the house.

There's no phono input, but the unit's 4 stereo analog audio (left/right RCA) inputs accommodate, for instance, a cassette deck, a VCR, your cable-box outputs, or a DVD player. (Make sure your television has sufficient inputs for the number of video sources whose audio you plan to route through the receiver.) A bass-boost circuit enhances your program's low frequencies for greater musical or cinematic input.

A switched AC outlet lets you plug another device into the receiver, conserving wall sockets and powering up the plugged devices at the same time as the receiver. When the receiver powers on and off, so also will the component plugged into the power outlet, provided you leave its power set to "on." Listening at night? Plug into the receiver's .25-inch headphone jack so you won't wake the family or neighbors.

4-0 out of 5 stars rounds out my 5.1 system
I bought this sub to turn my 5.0 system into a 5.1.Since this is my first subwoofer I can't compare it to any other product. I can say it fills a void that my 2 fronts didn't.It doesn't shake walls or break glass and that is fine for my needs. If you have a small space and budget to match then this unit will do the job. One suggestion:replace the supplied 75ohm cable with a more expensive one. It makes a HUGE difference!

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon.com does not have this item
I can't tell you what I think of this because although Amazon says it is avaliable in 2 days they told me that they can't ship it to me for 2 months.I live in Boston, but given the delivery time you'd think I live in the middle of some remote ocean on a different planet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
I own a 500W Home Theater system with an included passive subwoofer. I wanted to upgrade my system and found this SONY active subwoofer at Radio Shack. I decided to buy it becauseit's a SONY, and for its affordable price and specifications.
And WOW what a sound difference after installing it.. An amazing bulky sound with a completely different music atmosphere specially when playing 5.1 channel DVD's.
The Speaker is nicely looking, video shielded, with a volume control, and a cut frequency control. There is a phase selection knob, a monoaural jack for connecting to a digital receiver (that's the one I use), and connections to the small satellite speakers of the system. Even the monoaural cable and the speaker's cables are included. What could I wish more?
I recommend this subwoofer for anyone seaking to upgrade his sound system with an affordable price and great specifications.

5-0 out of 5 stars WoW!
Bought a Sherwood home theater tuner/amp to take advantage of all those unused speakers in the basement bought over a 20 year period.Hooked up five speakers and had a great sound.Bought this damaged box special at Radio Shack warehouse outlet and then watched Starwars 4, 5 & 6 again. What an amazing differance. It doubled the intensity of the surround sound experience. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars A decent product with one serious flaw
This product description includes the following: "The cue and review feature provides sound to be heard as the fast forward and rewind modes are used, a helpful tool when searching for specific passages." Unfortunately there is no cue and review feature. There are buttons labeled cue and review, but they do nothing but fast forward and rewind, respectively. A call to SONY confirmed the fact: the agent said, "on this product cue means fast forward." Later she admitted that cue usually has another meaning. This makes the recording device nearly unusable for many purposes.
Otherwise, the recorder works pretty well for the price. The radio is less satisfactory, and the earphones must be plugged in to provide an aerial, even when the speakers are used.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very nice
I've had mine for a year now and it still works like brand new since the day I got it. My only complaint is the volume leveler when recording because sometimes on playback its too low. So its seems like I'm turning the volume dial to the max just to hear it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fills the bill!
I got this unit about 2 weeks ago and have been very pleased with it so far.
I purchased this Cassette/recorder to make some self-study drill tapes ,so I really didn't care about the built-in stereo speakers ,the FM tuner or even if it recorded in stereo or mono.
I just wanted the ability to record lectures on standard size casette tapes using an external microphone with a walk-man sized recorder. I looked at Sony's 'Pressman' line of recorders but none of them come with both an external microphone AND a set of headphones. This was the only Walkman I could find that came with a detachable microphone AND headphones.
The included stereo mic works very well for voice recordings and the included headphones sound very good for both voice AND music.
The FM stereo sound is of very good quality through both the headphones and the internal stereo speakers. the Bass boost and volume limiter are nice features that I wasn't looking for but found usefull once I tried them out.
All I needed was the ability to record lectures, since this unit provides 1/2 speed recording and playback ,to increase the amount you can fit on a single tape, I found that very handy and the recording quality of voice at half speed is excellent.

I do have a few minor complaints - The headphone jack is very touchy and causes intermittent speaker drop-outs with very little motion of the headphone plug and /or cable.. You need to secure the plug and cable to get a reliable signal on both channels if you listen while walking or jogging.
There is no included belt holder or carrying case - something that could help alleviate the touchy headphone jack ,so if you use it while walking or jogging you are left with only two options - carry it in your hand or put it in a pocket.
The headphones that are includedhave a cable attached to each ear-piece which are then joined together ,under your neck ,into a single cord. This configuration makes it impossible to keep from twisting up the cord in short-order,and it is nearly impossible to completely untwist once that has happened. A single cable configuration would be simpler and better.

You will probably want to get an AC/DC adapter. Try ...first - they have an appropriate 3Vdc adapter for about $...Sony wants $...for theirs.
Overall this is a good recorder and Player with all the features you need plus some nice extras. If you are considering a Sony Pressman - take at look at the WM-GX221 it might be just what you are looking for! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Spin your commercial CDs, your homemade music CDs of almost any stripe, or listen to the radio, TV, or weather-band transmissions with Sony's versatile, full-circle D-NF400 Psyc-styled Walkman portable CD player. The snazzy player includes SonicStage software, which lets you take full advantage of ATRAC3plus (Sony's proprietary music-compression technology) when making custom MP3 CDs on your computer. Playback options include 32-track programming, repeat (track, disc, or program), random play, and--thanks to Sony's great work in DSP efficiency--more than 85 hours of ATRAC3plus CD or up to 50 hours of audio CD playback from 2 AA batteries (not included).

The D-NF400 Psyc offers a 2-line dot-matrix display, full ID3 tag recognition, and bookmark playback (which lets you program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back at the touch of a button). CD Text support displays artist and title information with compatible commercial audio CDs.

ATRAC3plus is a high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space (you'll get around 490 songs per disc at 48 kbps).

Compatible with ID3 tagging and most CD burners, SonicStage CD Simple Burner software transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.

The D-NF400 Psyc offers a whopping 51 station presets, which works out to 30 FM, 10 AM, 4 WB, and 7 TV stations so you're never far from your favorite channels. You can hook the player up with your home system through an optional analog stereo "Y" interconnect.

Skip-Free G-Protection technology boosts the laser pickup's shock protection to minimize read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music, providing quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks. The D-NF400's heat-resistant lid helps protect the player against high-temperature build up, especially when you're using it outdoors or in a vehicle.

Digital Mega Bass Sound boosts your music's low end without high clarity and low distortion, and there's also a built-in equalizer with 3 preset curves and 1 customizable setting. Sony's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) conserves batteries--and guards your hearing--by capping your listening level at either of two settings. The player works with an optional AC/DC 4.5V power adapter (AC-E45HG or -E45A).

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's WM-FX488 stereo cassette player is portable enough--and, at under half a pound--light enough to go anywhere. In addition to playing tapes, the Walkman offers drift-free, digitally synthesized FM stereo and wideband AM, TV (channels 2 to 13), and weather band (channels 1 to 7) reception.

The player's automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains an even volume level, guarding against unintended level increases and evening the output of musical passages that vary widely in level. Auto-reverse lets you enjoy uninterrupted listening to both sides of a cassette with no need to open the player and turn over the tape, while Mega Bass produces deep, rich bass tones.

For the radio, 40-station preset memory offers one-button tuning to your choice of seven TV stations, four weather-band stations, 24 FM stations, and five AM stations. At the press of a button, the "digital auto preset scanning" feature plays a few seconds of each memorized radio station, in sequence, to help select stations for listening and to determine which to set into memory. An FM local/distant (DX) switch improves reception of fuzzy stations.

Supplied MDR-027 over-ear headphones offer wide dynamic range and clear sound, and the unit also comes with a carry case and belt clip. A single AA battery provides up to 35 hours (maximum, using Sony Alkaline batteries) of continuous tape playback, or up to 40 hours of FM radio reception. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars AVLS
I've owned Sony Mini disc players - the first one I owned had this AVLS - I didn't like it at all and wrote to Sony to let them know. This AVLS feature limited the upper volume of my first mini-disc player. I told Sony that they had no right to "control" my choice of the amount of volume I wanted to listen to my music. The second Sony mini-disc player I bought (the first one was defective) did NOT have the AVLS and I was pleased that they removed this Sony control over my choice. This product (the cassette player) has this Sony "big brother control". I was ready to purchase this product until I saw the AVLS feature. Now I will not buy this product simply because of that feature. I will write to Sony again about this cassette player. Believe me, the highest volume that Sony sets the AVLS at was low, insufficient. It was frustrating to not be able to turn up my volume, especially while I power walk and I hardly think that when I'm at my football games, I would even be able to hear the TV bands at all. The other features are nice - but Sony has lost my purchase due to the AVLS.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy on my eyes, wallet, and muscles
I got this walkman about a week ago and I'm loving it. It weighs about half as much as the 12 year old sony walkman its replacing, and the digital tuning is a great feature. I learned to work it easily in about 5 minutes of playing around and mimimal instructions. The tapes load from the back, which is a little odd, but doesn't do anything bad. AM radio works GREAT, FM pretty good, TV good on some stations, and WB not at all, but I don't really need that anyways. The battery indicator is a great feature that they happened to throw in, and all the buttons are in good places and work well. It comes with a case and headphones which both work well, and look dorky. I recomend this cassette player!

4-0 out of 5 stars I'm Happy!
I recently purchased this player for my birthday as a gift to myself and I am so pleased with it that I actually just got done ordering another one as a back up, just incase I break my first one.
Very Happy, I love the Auto-Reverse feature because I listen to a lot of tapes at work and it saves me from having to stop my work to flip the tape over when side one has finished.
Wonderful unit, and reasonably priced, Great for the Audio Book fan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Great cassette player, but poor TV reception
This is a great lightweight cassette player, but if you want to listen to TV and/or radio be prepared to be disappointed. It is not as good as the older Sony model WMFX-281. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Great sound, eats batteries
I have to admit that these speakers sound great, especially for their size. However, batteries only last a couple of hours.I had ordered these for my computer system at work. So, I searched for the AC adapter, and it has been discontinued. And, even when it was available, it was $29.99!Almost as much as the speakers!Sometimes it gets frustrating that Sony makes all their adapters proprietary, so that universal adapters won't work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not as good as its elder brother T55
First of all, I would like to say that Sony T55 speaker is really an amazing product, I have friends heard the sound and immedialty asked me where to buy,and later, she got 2 sets, one for herself and the other as a gift to her boss@_@. Since I am so pleased with the now-discontinued-model T55 speak I brought last year, I went to Sony show room yesterday and wanted to get a new one. But the salesman told me that the model was discontinued, and he suggest me to get the new T57. Althougt I don't like the new color pattern of T57, I finally brought a blue one back home(after all, what matters most is the sound of speakers, not the looks of them,right?).... However, after 24 hours break-in, I found that the new T57 is not as good as my old T55, in terms of the sound quality: it lacks of the lovely mid-bass which T55 generate and is overall not as balance as the old model...I am disappointed to Sony this time...

So I strongly recommand anyone who are looking for a great sound quality, small and portable speaker to consider T55 before they are out of stock. Well, T57 is not that bad, but you will miss T55 if you had heard the sound of both model... ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Accessory Error
I purchased this product and specifically wanted to use it with an AC power source. As you can see from the technical specifications, it can use the optional AC-E60A AC Adapter.(The same note is provided on the Sony web site.)That is not true.I spent a long time today with Sony support and the same answer from everyone was that, in fact, this speaker is not compatible with an AC adapter. If you want to use batteries, fine (although it did sound "tinny"), but if you want to use an AC power source, look elsewhere.

4-0 out of 5 stars Gets the Job Done
I wanted a small, portable speaker for my mp3 player that didn't cost too much and had decent sound. This unit fits all of those criteria and I'm happy with it.No, the sound quality isn't extremely high fidelity and the bass lacks depth, but it gets the job done.

1-0 out of 5 stars A terrible choice for portable audio.
I find it hard to believe that any of the reviewers who have made positive comments have actually listened to and compared several different sets of portable speakers. If they had, they would tell you to avoid these losers.

The sound is tinny, even with the amplifier on.With only .15 watts per channel, you get volume only marginally above that of a typical set of headphones just lying on the table. These might do OK if you put them on the pillow next to your head, but I suspect that you will still be disappointed.

Instead, consider the Panasonic RP-SPT70 travel speakers. They are, when folded, only slightly larger than the T33s.They use four AA batteries and have 1 watt of power output per speaker. They also cost about $10 less than the Sonys.

To be fair, the Sonys DO fit in just about any handbag or briefcase. And they are very solidly constructed. But this does not compensate for the poor sound quality.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great speakers for the traveler
I personally bought this item in silver, but assume it's the same as the blue. I always travel with my laptop and have been wearing headphones to hear good sound or listening to very poor (if audible) quality from the speakers on my laptop. These speakers, at $40, do a great job; no more headphones in the motel room. Without batteries, it's useless, but I installed normal alkaline batteries and got as good, if not better sound than the TV in my expensive hotel room. I've listened to music and DVD's on this speaker and won't wear headphones on the road again. The cables from my amplifer to my speakers at home cost more than $40 and this certainly doesn't duplicate that sound, but for a traveler or for someone going on vacation with their family, this speaker, at $40, is a great value. The only reason I rated it a 4 stars rather than 5 stars is that, as we all know from experience, there will be better speakers tomorrow. (Today, it deserves 5 stars).

2-0 out of 5 stars Not so great
I purchased these based on a recommendation in one of my outdoor magazines.I was quite disappointed.

The sound is mediocre at best. The "megabass" advertised on the package is a joke. The speakers are easily overwhelmed and quick to distort.Have you listened to music on a very cheap clock-radio?These are step below that.

Definitely not worth the $40 I paid.I'm returning these and going back to a pair of Sony travel speakers I purchased about 15 years ago. They're larger, but sound much better.

If you're satisfied with weak sound and must have something very small, these might be acceptable. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy!
Target can do better and should stop selling this unit. I am on my second unit with same CD player failure waiting for the third replacement. Sony will not refund or give exchange voucher for a different unit. Target will not stand behind the unit either. Normally Sony products are reliable but not this one. I'm sorry I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE IT!
I received this as a Christmas gift. It was super easy to install. (Just use the enclosed template) The sound is terrific. and not only do I receive all of my favorite stations but also my not so favorite ones too! Everything works great. No problems as of yet. Thank you for an awesome product.

2-0 out of 5 stars good while it lasted
We used ours for a couple of years and enjoyed it until the "down" volume button stopped working. Of course, someone pushed the up volume button, so now it's stuck on level 50, and completely unusable.

1-0 out of 5 stars Practically Unusable
It looks like I'm not the only one who had a problem. My CD player also stopped working after a couple of months. In addition, the radio "fuzzed out" most of the time. I'd steer clear of this brand. I discarded mine within the first year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Combination of Style, Functionality and Price
The Sony Clié PEG-TJ37 is the perfect combination of Style, Functionality and Price. The silver finish is very cool and distinctive. The Clié Stylus is retractable and made out of Metal, not cheap plastic. The navigation buttons are very simple and the Clíe Application Launcher (Sony's Display Format, similar to Windows CE) is quite simple to use and very original too.

It comes with the Documents To Go from Dataviz Application (You have to register your Clié to Download it first, but it's a simple process), which allows you to edit Word and Excel Documents, as well as viewing Powerpoint applications. The Camera is very good, I previosly owned a Palm Zire 71 and I have to say resolution is better with the Clié. The only downside is the lack of a Flash. Under low light conditions you get zero, nada... The MP3 player application is OK, although I prefer the Real Player application that comes with Palm Products than the AeroPlayer App that comes with your Clié. Overall it has improved Memo Pad (Clié Memo is something like a pocket paint), Adress (you can include pictures), and its comes with other handy apps like Contacts Pro, Agendus and the usual Date Book and To Do List which remain virtually unchanged. The Picsel Viewer technology is very nice, but you need a memory stick in order to use it (it allos you to see Word documents, PDF Documents, JPEG Images, Excel Worksheets and many other formats). Kinoma Player Version 2 is OK, I don't see too many changes from the first version. The Audible Player allows you to download audio like interviews, news, etc. The Presenter-To-Go application is a very neat idea, but its basically a tease for you to buy the Module which allows you to present Powerpoint Presentations directly from your Clié to a Data Show Screen Projector using a special Cable/ Software.

Internet and Mail apps are great, specially when using the IEEE 802.11b port which is similar to the Centrino Chip used by Intel. It allows you to connect wireless to the Internet so you can check mail, do some surfing, etc. Very handy, but it only works where public access points are available and they come with a charge, depending on the provider. Biggest problem is that it sucks battery life dry in just a couple of hours.

The only major complaint I have with this product, for which I didn't award it five stars, is that like all Sony Products, they force you to buy additional hardware like a Memory Stick if you want to listen to MP3, or if youn want to transfer pictures from your Clié to your Laptop or Desktop. I recommend you go for the Memory Stick Pro expansion card (256 will do, 512 is optimum). Finally, it does not come with a docking station / cradle, but just a simple USB connector that looks rather cheap. You have to buy the Docking Station separately.(standard with all Palms).

Overall its a very good product, just remember to buy a Memory Stick, Docking Station/ Cradle, and remember always to bring your Power Source with you cause Life Battery isn't exactly great. One last thing, try buying a solid Carrying Case if you want to avoid scratching your new toy...

4-0 out of 5 stars First week with the TJ37
I bought this pda to replace an clie sj-20, which I liked quite a bit.

I bought it primarily for the wireless connection, since I have access to wireless and home and work. Rather than run off to my computer to check email, I hoped to be able to pull out the pda, check email, and sync later.

So far my plan is working very well. As others have noted, the wireless connection settings are very easy. Setup of software was also easy. Unlike another reviewer, I like installing components one by one to avoid having things I don't want.

Palm OS v5.0 is somewhat of an improvement, although it isn't clear to me exactly what is palm and what is Sony. I do like the 'desktop,' which seems vaguely MacOS X-like.

I very much like that the TJ37 works with previous clie peripherals - I have a terrific fold up keyboard that is a marvel of engineering (the newer stowaway) which works much better with the 200mhz processor of the TJ37 than the 33mhz in the sj20.

And as others have noted, the camera is a great addition. Used closeup and without zoom the camera takes very serviceable pictures. And they are quick, without the annoying lag we experience no our 4megapixel Canon. Since I always have my palm with me, I'm taking many more pictures of the kids etc.

A couple of notes:
The TJ37 comes with a cover that opens like a book. It is the same material (which defies description) as my sj20. It opens like a book, I'm assuming, to facilitate the use of the camera. The sj20 has a flip up cover, which is more convenient. The TJ55 has a translucent plastic cover, which looks a lot better.

The version of intellisync included has less functionality than the version that came with my sj20, so I uninstalled the latest and reinstalled the sj20 one. In particular, the new version does not allow you to set date parameters for calendar sync...an annoyance.

The size of the stylus does not bother me in the least.

Netfront web browser is quite good.

I bought it for wireless and the unit really delivers. Highly recommend at this price point.

2-0 out of 5 stars A thorough look at a weak product
After much research, reading, thinking and more reading I was torn between 2 PDA models, the Clie TJ37 and another model (whom I shall not mention here because I don't want to come off as shilling for a competitor).

Since I was a return Clie customer I thought it a good move at the time to lean toward the Clie line. Once I waded through the nay-sayers and detracters of the Clie line, I arrived at the store with money in pocket. Spending a few minutes alone with the stylus-less floor model & the runner-up, I finally decided to purchase the TJ37. I and ran home with it tucked under my arm. (after paying of course)

The out-of-box experience was excellent, everything you need packaged neatly in a sturdy, green, cardboard box. Ahhh, just like the first time, I thought as I opened it up. After patiently charging it for four hours, I was ready to rock & roll with my new Clie. This is the first color-PDA I have ever owned, oh how I looked forward to this moment.

I picked it up and pulled out the stylus. And that's where the disenchantment began, that cruddy little telescoping stylus. Here are the bad points of the TJ37 as I see them (and each one made me madder)

Cover - at least Sony included a cover with the Clie, one of the few things they are good enough to throw in. The old Clie's had the cover attach to the top of the unit. That was a good, ambidextrous orientation and was easy to flip up and out of your way to use the unit. The TJ37 however, has one clipped to the left side of the Clie, like a small book. Making it harder & less comfortable to hold out of the way.

Stylus - there's no excuse for a stylus this small and this bad. Uncomfortable, hard to hold, cheap, difficult to use and you cannot even replace it with a normal sized stylus because the holder won't accept it. I have average sized hands and this stylus was way too small. Hard to use and easy to loose!

Lack of base - I am also quite tired of paying good money for a PDA and then have to shell out MORE money for a deskcharger base when it should come standard with the unit! This goes for ALL makers of PDAs. But, I especially ding Sony here b/c they squandered their development money on frivolity (integrated weak-camera, their own cruddy software) instead of being pragmatic or even innovative they chose the route of often made mistakes. Next time include a deskcharger base with the product.

Sony's proprietary s/w - I am sick of companies overwriting standard software with their own interpretation. It wastes system resources and you cannot delete it! The money it took Sony to develop that crappy Clie Manager software, which no one will use, could have been saved and help deliver a more affordable unit to market. I buy Palm PDA's for PALM o/s not to use your idea of what PALM should look like!

Chinsy cameras - and chinsy is a nice way of saying cheap-a** garbage!! Cameras have been integrated into phones to such an extent that you cannot purchase a decent cellphone without an integrated camera, a camera you probably won't ever use btw. And Sony follows suite with a cheap, weak performing 310k pixel camera - why bother? A third of a mega-pixel camera? You have to be within 5 feet of a really well lit subject to get a blurry, washed out image. Wow - what a feature! Again, waste of development time and construction materials to deliver something no one will use, and few wanted. Again, that money could have been saved to offer a more affordable unit on the market. Why not include a Swiss Army knife next time at least that would be a useful feature!

Connection adapter - the IO/power adapter used to plug into the bottom of the Clie gave me my first, real "what the H! were they thinking" moment with Sony! A cheap little piece of plastic less than 1 inch square needed as a go-between for the USB & power cord. So, what happens if I loose it? Or if it breaks? Guess I'll have to stuff more money into their pockets to buy one - and while I wait, I won't be able to use my PDA...another great idea from the cheap marketing-driven minds at Sony! Clearly Japanese traditions of quality are being replaced at Sony with marketing delusions, when they could benefit by marrying pragmatism.

By the time I was done, I threw it back in the box (none too happy), went back and returned the TJ37. I read someplace that this is one of the last Clie releases Sony plans for the US. GOOD, I say, because I do not plan to purchase another Clie (unless my demands, above, are met). What a waste of time, effort and money ... steer clear of this Clie.

The upshot, I learned some new things on PDA's and I purchased the runner-up, which is excellent!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great PDA
My husband used to support the Microsoft Pocket PC products and they were buggy as heck. As part of his job he got them free. After all the aggrivation he had with his, he spent the money on his TJ37 and loves it.
His HP product had to be hard reset every two weeks. He had several MS approved apps on the Pocket PC that had to be reinstalled, a 30-40 minute ordeal. A hard reset on a Pocket PC is similar to reformatting your hard drive. Hard resets also caused him to run out of validations on his ebooks. Contrast that to the TJ37. He's never had to do a hard or soft reset on the Clie. Like a Timex watch, it takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin. He did try a hard reset on the Clie once, but everything returned when he synchronized the newly reset Clie with the PC.
My husband's associates at his firm asked advise on which palm device to purchase. He enthustically recommended the Clie, but his associates purchased Compaq's at 50% off. Consequently, they're having to perform hard resets, the alarms quit working, etc., yet my husband's Clie just keeps plugging along.

5-0 out of 5 stars My first PDA
I've held off for a few years before going to a PDA..basically because I was so used to paper day planners. I am glad I finally got a PDA. I guess I got tired of going to meetings and watching everyone deep into their Palms while I looked out of place with my paper notes. But aside from image, I can honestly say that I am very impressed with this device. I did some reasearch and found that Palm OS is better than the other MS devices because there is much more software. Palm OS is also more user friendly. I really like all of the enterainment options on the TJ37. I haven't been able to figure out how to connect the mobile internet and the MP3 stuff yet but I'll make that a careful study. But I did download tons of cool software and this thing has more than enough memory to handle all of the software up-grades, e-books, games, etc. The graffiti works pretty good too..it didn't take me long to get the hang of it. I recommend this to those of you who are contemplating taking the big leap to a PDA. The TJ37 is the perfect little mobile office and coupled with a nice leather case (you have to kinda search for one that'll fit on the internet becasue they don't supply one to you) you'll have a nice little executive mobile office. I can tell you that the stylus is pretty annoying. It is a thin piece of metal that is retractable. It is too flimsly and contracts in your hand sometimes as you using the device and does not pull smoothly from the device..it kind of tugs a bit. Also the battery life kind of drains pretty quickly. But the bottomline is that for the price and what you get it's a very good deal..highly recommended. This thing has everything and the Sony brand is about the best you can get from a electronic device..the quality is very good. ... Read more
