Amazon.com Product Description

Designed primarily for the mobile professional, the Toshiba Satellite A25-S279 Notebook PC is a solid choice for businesspeople and anyone else that needs a powerful and versatile mobile setup but doesn't require the extreme portability of an ultra-lightweight.

As the fastest member of Toshiba's midlevel A20 series of notebooks, the Satellite A25-S279 is driven by a potent 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to 1024 MB). These are solid components that should keep you computing at a top level for some time to come. However, if you operate a lot of 3-D applications such as high-end games or complex animation and design applications, the system's Trident CyberBlade graphics chipset with 32 MB of shared (not dedicated) memory is not sufficient. In this case, you may want to upgrade from the Trident or explore another Toshiba model.

Measuring 13.4 by 11.6 by 1.9 inches and weighing in at 7.9 pounds, the Satellite A25-S279 is a bit larger than average and may be too bulky for those who need their notebook with them on all their journeys. It is, however, packed with capable amenities. Toshiba has included an accommodating 60 GB hard disk, a full-size 85-key keyboard with hotkeys and dedicated CD controls, a generous 15-inch XGA TFT active-matrix display, and a convenient DVD/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and listen to audio CDs, archive files, and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. In its stock configuration, the unit does not permit DVD burning.

Connectivity options are solid. The system features three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, an S-Video TV-out jack, an RJ-11 modem port for dial-up communication, an RJ-45 LAN port for high-speed networking, and integrated 802.11g wireless support for those times when you just can't plug in. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works and Intuit Quicken New User Edition 2003. Typical battery life is estimated at an adequate 2.41 hours. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars amazon.com sucks
an amazon merchant under the name electrophreaky has advertised to sell this item as a new product. I have purchased it and the item was never shipped to me in spite of my numerous attempts to contact seller though his posted email on amazon.com. Tgeseller later dissapeared from the amazon website. Amazon.com has not made an attempt to chased down this lousy seller or provide contact ph no fo him. they insisted on applying their 30 days policy of do nothing and another 30 days and we may refund you. thats 60 days and i am out $1300 which they're banking. people stay away from amazon and its merhcants. no wonder they're losing their ass off as a company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ugly duckling that will grow on you
I just got my Toshiba A25-S279 yesterday so I can't say if it will last years and years like my buddy's did. The thing that jumped out as soon as I opened the box was how ugly the notebook was. Its large size is also a bit of a problem. At 13.4" x 11.6" x 1.9", it's very hard to find a bag that fits. Most "large" bags only fit up to 13" x 11". You have to go for an "oversized" bag. This notebook looks cheap when compared to other notebooks. And I don't mean Sony which is light years ahead in term of looks.

Here are the reasons why I bought this ugly duckling anyway.
1. It's the most reasonably priced notebook among other major brands. You can't find a better deal on P4 2.8, 60GB, 512MB, DVD-CDRW, built-in 802.11g than this one. Toshiba also gives out generous rebates. Check out their website for details. The store I bought mine from didn't advertise it. Lucky I found a $100 rebate on the Toshiba website.
2. Built quality. All of my friends who bought Toshiba never had problems with theirs. The battery stopped holding charges after over a year, but all notebooks have this problem.
3. It comes with a restore disk. If anything goes wrong, you don't have to scramble for a boot disk and install all the drivers. Just pop in this disk and click OK, OK, once in a while. Your notebook will be back to its original factory installed condition in an hour.
4. It runs directly off the A/C. To preserve the battery life, when I'm at home which is most of the time, I take out the battery completely. Plug the notebook into the UPS and let it run directly off the A/C plug. You can't do that with Dell's. The Dell's circuit isn't completed without a battery. My sister's Dell's battery is completely dead (doesn't hold charge for even one second) but she still need to put her battery in its slot anyway just so the computer would turn on. Very annoying.
5. Built-in wireless. At this price range, it's very hard to find ones that come with built-in 802.11g. Some come with 802.11b, yucks!
It's a lot nicer not having to haul around a wireless card that you may lose or forget to bring with you. Being built-in also means that it frees up the PC card slot for something else you may need.

I highly recommend this notebook to anyone who's going to use this laptop as a replacement PC, who's not travelling a lot, who doesn't mind the ugly look knowing that its the inside (P4 2.8, 512, 60GB yada yada) that counts.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Tech Support
Toshiba may make good products, but their support is the worst i have ever come across. They have lost my laptop for over a month now and do not care a lick about it. They're tech support team is in Turkey and they dont care a thing about anybody. They kept hanging up on me and refused to help me saying it will take some time. When i called back- no one knew anything and had zero updates. DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA PRODUCTS! Get a Gateway or Dell instead...two companies that actually care about their customers.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good but bulky laptop
Before buying this laptop, I compared just two non-widescreen models, HP ZE5570US and this Toshi. The HP has too much silver plastic and it's just not my taste thought the HP is not that bulky as Toshi. For nearly one month ownership, A25-S279 is overall a good laptop as expected. The performance of 2.8P4+480M (512M-32M video) is more than enough for programming and some graphics s/w. Harddrive is very quiet. 54G wireless is no problem with my D-Link DI624 router. Not sure about PC game though.

However, you should notice there's no free CD burning s/w bundled but a trial one. Also the depth is a bit larger than a regular laptop. Be sure it'll fit your notebook case. They are the reasons I bought a Nero 6.0 Ultra and Samsanite carry case. ... Read more

Enjoy rich, full-bodied surround sound from a stylish, slim-design system with Toshiba's SD-43HT. The system consists of an audio/video receiver coupled with a single-disc DVD player, a 5.1-channel speaker package, and a powered subwoofer. The DVD player is equipped with a progressive-scan output for superlative images on high-definition and HD-ready televisions, and in addition to full surround processing the system also plays your homemade CDs filled with MP3, WMA, and JPEG sound and image files.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-43HT's ColorStream Pro DVD player stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. Composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

The SD-43HT also features Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive feature (3:2 pulldown). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The speaker package features four satellite speakers with 3-inch drivers (front and surround left/right, powered by 50 watts apiece), a larger center-channel speaker (for handling most dialogue and critical sound effects, also 50 watts), and a 70-watt, 8-inch subwoofer to drive home the foundation-shaking bass effects of your favorite movies. Surround processing includes decoding of Dolby Digital, DTS, and Dolby Pro Logic II (which generates surround output from stereo sources), and an optical digital-audio output facilitates hookup with a CD recorder or alternate surround processor.

The Digital Photo Viewer lets you see digital JPEG photographs on any television; an intuitive onscreen display helps you customize slideshows with a few simple clicks of the remote. You can zoom, rotate, and pan the photos, as well as set the actual viewing time of each slide. Other features include black-level expansion (which enables the DVD player to output a 0 IRE signal for richer, deeper black tones than standard players), picture zoom, two auxiliary video inputs (one with S-video) for your VCR or other devices, and a preset remote control. The color-coded connections add convenience and make set-up a snap.

What's in the Box

  • MP3, WMA, and JPEG CD-R/CD-RW compatibility, headphone jack
  • ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component video outputs for seamless, flicker-free images on high-definition and HD-ready TVs
  • Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 pulldown) optimizes DVD-based movies for their native 24 fps film rate
  • 6-speaker system with 50 watts per channel (left, right, center, left/right surround), 70-watt powered subwoofer

4-0 out of 5 stars could be a little better
pictur is great (in p-scan, of corese) it plays DVD+RW and +R (+R MUST be finelesed first) and it looks prity cool too.
but the sound is not as good as it should have been: its hardand somwhat cold and there is no tone control.
but overall its not bad.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hello...Protection...Goodbye
As others have mentioned, this machine fails with no warning.

Mine failed after less than 40 uses.Toshiba's reply was
essentially, "Have a nice day."

This is a known problem and Toshiba could care less.

So scratch Toshiba off of my list.I will not buy their products
again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good while it lasts -- but they don't last
Up until a couple days ago I would have rated this home theater system at 4 or 5 stars. It has component video out and DVDs look great on my HDTV set. The sound is pretty good, not very loud however. The subwoofer puts out very weak bass but the surround sound works well. The DVD tray takes a very long time to open. The reason why I rated this at one star is that it lasted only 3 months longer than the one-year warranty. Others have mentioned the problem: you power up the system, it displays "HELLO" as usual. Then the display reads "PROTECTION", followed by "GOODBYE", and then the system shuts itself down. In my case, the system was working fine and then out of the blue it shut itself down. There is no reason for this to have happened. I called Toshiba and they had me power down and then power up my system. It didn't help. Then they had me unplug every wire from the system and let it sit for 1/2 hour, and try it again. No luck. They gave me the number for a repair service, but using the repair service will cost almost as much as the system does. When a piece of electronics can barely last longer than the warranty, you know you have a piece of junk on your hands. There is no other way to put it. I intend to join the class action suit. I have purchased a Samsung HT-DS610 from Circuit City and I hope it is of better quality.

2-0 out of 5 stars I got the protection fault
I have two systems. One has worked fine for probably about a year. But the second newer one just got the same "HELLO PROTECTION GOODBYE" fault that so many people seem to be getting.

The class action suit looks like it is at:
http://www.dvdnotice.com/

I'm not sure how directly it addresses this problem, but looks worth checking out.Deadline for claim forms is May 1, 2005

1-0 out of 5 stars Same Protection Fault
I am not sure that it lasted more than a month. I don't use it much and am so disappointed that not only do I need to get a new DVD player, but I need a new stereo receiver since I replaced my receiver when I got this system. I will have to look into that class action lawsuit. Save your money do not buy this. The speakers seem pretty good though, so I would like to save them. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Get the most from your DVDs and CDs with Toshiba's SD-3800 single-disc DVD player, whose ultimate Super ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video outputs produce seamless, flicker-free images with high-definition and HD-ready TVs. Built-in MP3 decoding let you compile music on your PC and listen to it on your stereo or TV, and you can even watch customized digital-picture slideshows using recordable CDs filled with standard JPEG image files.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-3800's Digital Cinema Progressive feature delivers the full potential of your DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

Digital Cinema Progressive also includes 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion. Conventional composite- and S-video outputs bring compatibility with nearly any television.

Grayscale in video is measured and tracked on a scale of 0 (black) to 100 (white) IRE units. A picture's NTSC video black cutoff level is traditionally assigned a 7.5 IRE value. The SD-3800's "expanded" mode lets the player output a 0 IRE signal for richer, deeper black tones in every image. PLUGE (Picture Line Up Generation Equipment) delivers black as well as below-black signals to televisions with exceptionally high contrast ratios.

The Toshiba Digital Photo Viewer lets you enjoy digital photographs on your television. The viewer supports a variety of popular digital formats, including Konica, Fuji Photo, Kodak Picture CD, as well as standard JPEG files created on a home PC. An intuitive onscreen display assists you in creating customized slideshows with just a few simple clicks of the remote. You can set the viewing time for each "slide," zoom in on parts of images, and rotate and pan the photos.

Onboard NAVI user interface uses graphical icons (rather than simple text) for quick access to key functions. The system includes an onscreen "virtual remote control," an angle viewer for titles encoded with multiple camera angles, preview for creation of thumbnail chapter views, strobe for a breakdown of a particular scene, and capture, which lets you choose custom wallpaper.

A set of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each coaxial and optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. The player's internal digital-to-analog converters work at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material.

Enhanced Audio Mode (E.A.M.) offers three sound settings: normal (off), 3-D (virtual surround sound enhancement), and dialogue expander (which enhances center-channel frequencies in the range of human voices during playback of multichannel content). Other playback options include picture zoom (which lets you magnify a select area of an image) and parental lock.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but..
Great performance and picture, though has the annoying habit of occasionally locking up during load/unload, have to pull the power plug (and dismember entertainment center to get at it) in order to regain control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent progressive scan DVD player
I bought the SD3800 to go with my Toshiba 57H82 HDTV. There was an obvious improvement in the picture and clarity over my old Toshiba 1600 which played many enjoyable DVDs. The SD3800 upconverts to 540 and that matches the Toshiba HDTV. It was easy to set up and has worked great for the last month. The remote is nice and large with easy access to buttons. It allows easy adjustment of audio settings and provides zoom controls that help you to fit the screen to your TV if you need it. It is nice and compact and fits well on top of my TV. There are many choices and you can find good info at [website]to help you make your decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine progressive scan DVD player at a bargain price.
Toshiba makes top-notch DVD players with an excellent reputation for outstanding performance as well as quality and reliability. The SD3800 has these desirable characteristics plus component video output for better picture quality and progressive scan technology for compatibility with HDTVs, all at a bargain price. You may not have an HDTV yet but you probably will have one within a year or two, so why not be prepared with a progressive scan DVD player when you can get one this good at such a low price? And the component video output will improve the picture quality even on non-HDTVs. This player is an outstanding performer at a terrific price.

4-0 out of 5 stars My first DVD player; great so far; sound is very low
After countless review reading for DVD players, I was set on either a Panasonic or Toshiba NON-PROGRESSIVE SCAN DVD player as my first. ... Luckily, I had a chance to buy this one WITH PRGRESSIVE SCAN..., so I grabbed it.

After pummeling the DVD player in its first 1-2 weeks of ownership with about 20 hours straight of Stargate SG-1 DVD collection viewing and rental movies, I can safely say that it's a great buy.

The menus are easy to use for setup, and the unit features nice zoom and image capture features, if you need that stuff. The documentation for some of the features could be a little better, as I couldn't find the section on storing bookmarks or memorized DVD chapters for viewing later. That may be something that I'll find on my laptop DVD player and software rather than a standalone unit.

Finally, the sound, through my piddly RCA-jack-only TV is VERY LOW. I have to turn the TV up about 5 extra notches to hear the dialogue on movies. There is a dialogue enhancement mode for sound, however, that helps with the quietest rentals that I've enjoyed.

Bottom line -- a great DVD player, if you can get it at a [good] price. Too bad it doesn't come in black.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD Player
I Love this DVD player. I used to have problems with DVD's skipping if they were scratched from the rental store, but have never had a problem with this machine. I also like how you can set the DVD player to beep every time you choose a command. This DVD player is full of features and an excellent product. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The Toshiba 20AF45 20 inch FST Pure TV packs a high-end feature set into a mid-sized, not-quite-traditional flat tube unit. The 20 inch FST Pure flat tube eliminates unwanted reflections from room light compared to conventional tube designs and increases viewing angle. An Invar shadow mask enhances color reproduction thanks to its nickel-alloy construction. There's even a 16:9 mode for viewing widescreen content--a feature almost always reserved for larger units.

Toshiba didn't forget the audio either. Double baffle speakers provide improved stereo, without connecting additional speakers. And the StableSound technology maintains volume, even when commercials try to shout at you. MTS Stereo/SAP with dbx provides full broadcast stereo quality with access to bilingual or secondary audio signals.

The TV boasts a wide array of input types too. There's the user-friendly front A/V connections, as well as rear A/V inputs, as well as S-Video, ColorStream component video, and the old school RF input. All these options mean you can connect most any device to this TV quickly and easily.

The 20AF45 includes trilingual display, offering English, French and Spanish. The font A/V inputs make it easy to connect video devices or game consoles. And the headphone jack lets you watch TV without disturbing friends and family.

This TV ranks high with parents too. A GameTimer allows for parental control of playing time. The V-Chip and channel lock features let parents control what their children view.

If you're looking for a mid-sized TV that includes high-end features typically reserved for big units, the Toshiba 20AF45 is definitely worth a look. You'll be hard-pressed to find a comparable mid-sized, feature-rich TV.

3-0 out of 5 stars Still not good enough for a 20" flat screen
Toshiba has always had superior picture and sound compared to other TVs in the same size range, even Sony. However this new model doesn't quite cut it.First of all, when watching regular antenna signals or cable, there is a ghosting bar down the left side of the screen (not just my product, the display at Best Buy did the same thing, but I thought it might just be that one...I was wrong), and there is an upward curve of the picture on all inputs from the bottom-left corner up.If you can deal with this, so be it, but I cannot. What's the point of having a flat screen if it isn't straight and clear across the whole screen? This one's going back to Best Buy just like all the others.

NO GHOSTING ON NEW MODELS!!!GET IT STRAIGHT!!!I'M TALKING TO YOU TOSHIBA, SONY, MAGNAVOX, PHILIPS, SAMSUNG, PANASONIC!!!YOU ALL ARE MAKING CRAPPY TELEVISIONS!!!!!! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The stylish and compact 14VL43U offers a 20-inch, 4:3 LCD screen, an internal NTSC tuner for convenient broadcast-television viewing, and a 640 x 480-resolution picture. It's an EDTV, not a computer monitor--easily moveable and equipped to render vivid images from cable or antenna feeds as well as seamless, flicker-free pictures from progressive-scan DVD players and satellite receivers. Image quality is enhanced by a four-line digital comb filter, a high (400:1) contrast ratio, and impressive peak brightness of 500 candles/square meter.

The 14VL43U goes simply from room to room, and you can set the TV on a table or mount it on a wall (using an optional wall bracket). It emits exactly zero radioactivity, too, so you can sit as far or near as inclination or viewing space dictates. The 14VL43U features Toshiba's proprietary ColorStream HD component-video inputs capable of receiving both 480i and 480p signals. Composite- and S-video inputs (with accompanying left/right analog audio jacks) ensure compatibility with a range of audio/video equipment. The built-in NTSC tuner gives 181-channel tuning for convenient broadcast-TV viewing, and a set of AV output jacks lets you hook the TV into an audio receiver for listening over home speakers.

SRS WOW sound enhancement offers a combination of three types of processing. SRS 3D creates a wide, three-dimensional sound from two TV speakers. TruBass boosts bass-frequency perception for more dramatic low-frequency effects. And FOCUS raises the perceived sound image vertically to create clearer voices, even at lower volume levels. The combination of these features dramatically improves home-theater sound. A headphone jack fosters private listening.

Its unique space-saving tilt-panel design provides 160-degree viewing angles, and the television also offers an on/off timer, parental controls, closed captioning, and a handy remote control.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV if you're looking for an LCD flat panel!
I spent a great deal of time looking at flat-panel, 20" televisions before settling on the Toshiba. The starting price on the Toshiba was higher than comparable sets when it hit the market, but now the prices on all have dropped to about the same point, so price (when compared with other 20" LCDs) is not the issue it once was.

The picture on most sets is similar (I watched several sets in two different stores for quite a while), but I thought the Toshiba had a slight edge. In addition, unlike many sets, the Toshiba's screen tilts, just as most computer monitors would. Therefore, you can adjust it to get the best possible viewing angle.

The Toshiba also has very easy-to reach connections, whereas several other sets require the removal of a large panel to use. There's a small panel on the Toshiba that hides the D/C power and cable connections, but the panel can be replaced over the cords. WIth many sets, you have to leave the panel off while the cords are plugged in--so what's the point of the panel?

Summary: fantastic and clear picture, very lightweight at only 14 lbs, easy-to-move (even has a handle, unlike some flat-panel sets), hooks up in less than two minutes (VERY simple), easy-to-understand remote, and easy on-screen programming that anyone can figure out. Highly recommended!! ... Read more
