Amazon Product Description

The Basics:
When is a notebook not just a notebook? When it's one of Toshiba's new Qosimo notebooks. Distinctive from other mobile computers by virtue of its strong multimedia and 3D graphics attributes and easy adaptability to home entertainment setups, the Qosimo F15-AV201 is a top of the line portable package that's impressive in virtually any environment. Powerful, exceedingly versatile and packed with cutting edge amenities, the Qosimo F15-AV201 is well suited to discriminating individuals with a passion for multimedia.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today’s notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU’s on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Qosimo F15-AV201 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M processor 745 running at 1.8 GHz. This is one of three components that comprise Intel’s efficient Centrino system (the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support). Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. This particular CPU is part of Intel’s new, upgraded Pentium M lineup, featuring an amazing 2 MB of Level 2 cache for extremely fast access to recently opened files and applications. Though its overall speed is not on par with that of a high-end Intel Pentium 4 processor, the Pentium M 745 will easily handle typical tasks.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Qosimo F15-AV201 incorporates 512 MB of fast PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM memory. Though ultra-demanding users may want to expand this total to the unit's boggling maximum of 2048 MB, the stock allotment of RAM is more than enough for the vast majority of situations.

Video:
CPU’s are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system’s main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures. This system’s graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5700 with an impressive 128 MB of dedicated DDR video memory. This is a very strong notebook graphics chipset - on par or superior to the graphics capabilities of many desktop PCs - that delivers top-notch images and smooth frame rates to virtually any 2D and most 3D applications, including many of today's most popular 3D games.

Display:
You’ll love the way your images look on the 15.4-inch WXGA display. Featuring Toshiba's TruBrite Technology for a better, brighter picture than typical notebooks, a maximum resolution of 1024 by 768 and a panoramic, movie-friendly widescreen format, this display is ready for any environment and source.

Hard Disk:
The Qosimo F15-AV201 features a massive 80 GB of hard disk space. This level of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for those who want to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a large library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-Super-Multi drive that supports all of the above in each of today’s most common CD and DVD formats.

Audio:
Toshiba has equipped the unit with an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound and two comparatively beefy harman-kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Keyboard and Controls:
You’ll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard, several one-touch multimedia and general function keys, and a TouchPad pointing device with scroll.

Connectivity and Expansion:
Whether you prefer wireless or corded connections, the Qosimo F15-AV201 is ready for anything the present or future may bring. The unit offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a standard dial-up 56K data/fax modem for low-speed communication, an IntelPRO/100 VE Network Connection for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g) for cordless e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via local public hotspots. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, Bluetooth 1.1 technology for interaction with wireless peripherals, an i.LINK 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), futuristic S-Video and Component TV-out ports, and a digital audio out (SPDIF) connection. Furthermore, all critical connections are positioned at the rear of the unit for clean lines and easy home entertainment setups.

Operating System and Software:
The bundled software package begins with Microsoft’s Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. Similar to the standard Windows XP but with several enhancements geared to the multimedia fan, this is one of today's most advanced operating systems. Other applications include Intuit's Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Office OneNote 2003 note-taking and management program, and several operational, multimedia and online utilities.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today’s most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren’t as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 14.7 by 11.22 by 1.70 inches and 8.6 lbs (without feet), the Qosimo F15-AV201 is slightly larger than today's norm.

Power:
The unit is equipped with a 6-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Amazon.com incompetence
I ordered a TV for my daughters birthday three weeks in advance. Not only did it not arrive, but Amazon.com didn't even have the decency to respond to any of my e-mails asking where it was, or what happened to it. Do your self a favor, and NEVER buy anything from these idiots!!!!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Decent flat-screen picture, the rest is so-so at best
I purchased one of these for the bedroom. I thought 24" would be a bit too big, but it's actually a nice size for widescreen letterbox DVDs when it's near the foot of your bed. The unit does take up a lot of space though, and it's heavy. 24-25 inches is kind of an awkward size for a TV--too big for a bedroom but too small for a living room. I thought it'd be convenient to have the DVD and VCR combined with the TV, especially only having one remote. Unfortunately while the TV picture quality's pretty good, the built-in VCR and DVD aren't up to par with units I could have bought separately.

The way you get the VCR to record, or stop recording, isn't completely intuitive to me, and the programming options are minimal. It doesn't rewind tapes too fast either. The good thing is, you can record a TV program while watching a DVD. The DVD player, however, is even worse--it takes forever to load a disc, move between chapters, etc. and it's very finicky about disc condition, sometimes refusing to load/play ones at all when my Pioneer unit in the living room doesn't even flinch.

Although it does have the desirable side-mounted speakers, there's only one on each side and they're a paltry 1.5 watts each, hardly adequate for DVD soundtracks or playing music CDs. But, at least is has digital audio output if you want to use an external amp and speakers.

The remote glows nicely if you've left it in direct light, doesn't have awkward buttons at the very bottom, and you can use many of the buttons by feel, however, a lot of them are same-sized and in a perfect grid pattern, and while the button glows the labels do not, so in the dark they really all look the same. The on-screen menus aren't the best I've seen either.

Overall though, I'm pretty happy with this product except for the slow and finicky DVD player. The flat screen does provide a good picture, and the speakers aren't too bad for low-volume listening. It's certainly nice to only have one remote for three devices, and which can actually control all the features. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

With its widescreen dimension and wealth of picture-enhancing technologies, Toshiba's remarkably affordable 30HF84 is set to bring you into the digital future. The set sports 2 high-definition component-video inputs and an HDMI direct-digital connection for hookup with a DTV set-top box or HD satellite receiver. What's more, the 30-inch set's FST PURE fine-pitch flat picture tube not only looks great, it minimizes unwanted reflections from room light and increases viewing angles while enhancing picture linearity.

Improving upon standard interlaced signals (like those from DVD player, cable box, and VCR composite-video outputs), Toshiba's CrystalScan HDSC upconverts all signals to 1080i resolution. A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction ensures sharp, clean pictures from RF (older VCR, laserdisc) and composite-video signals.

DFine high-speed VSM (velocity-scan modulation) also improves definition at picture edges by slowing the CRT (cathode-ray tube) beam's horizontal scanning during demanding work and speeding it up when scanning easily rendered sections, like broad dark areas. Finally, Cinema Mode (3:2 pulldown reversal) circuitry identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

As standard video amplifiers increase the gain of the video signal, video bandwidth tends to decrease. This eliminates the higher frequencies, reducing resolution. The 30HF84's wideband video amplifier maintains the higher frequencies, enabling higher resolution and greater sharpness and detail.

Dual ColorStream HD component-video inputs (Y, Pr, Pb) provide the ultimate picture quality from high-resolution component-video signals (as from compatible DVD players or satellite receivers). And, with direct video input selection, you can directly select inputs from the remote's numbered keypad instead of having to scroll through all of them.

Two sets of rear AV inputs and a set of front AV inputs (all including S-video) foster easy connection with a camcorder or gaming console, and a rear AV output lets you hook the set up with a surround receiver.

The set's stereo speakers are powered by 10 watts per channel, and SRS WOW processing combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass low-frequency enhancement, and Focus (which clarifies voices).

HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your television. HDMI supports standard-definition (SD), enhanced definition (ED), or high-definition (HD) video, plus multi-channel digital audio--all using a single cable. It transmits all ATSC HDTV standards and supports up to 8-channel digital audio, with bandwidth to spare to accommodate future enhancements and requirements.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far... A very good TV when viewing in HDTV.
I purchased this TV in 2/05. I was initially unimpressed with the picture quality. In standard definition cable signal the picture can appear to varying degrees, a bit out of focus and fuzzy. I was very concerned and called customer service to have the TV looked at. They were very helpful and located a local repair center for me so that I could then call to schedule anin home appointment. I later learned that HDTV's are designed to show there best picture with an HDTV signal. So I upgraded my cable service to HDTV. It made a tremendous difference when viewing a program on an HDTV channel. In high definition the picture is crystal clear with excellent brightness and color. Sound quality is very impressive even when at maximum volume (no distortion). The theatre type sound effect can be improved with the addition of a surround sound system but it is not needed.

One minor fault, I was not able to get the TV Guide feature to work as a previous writer had mentioned

1-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba has Poor Customer Support
I have trouble with the image on my Toshiba 62hm94 and since have been checking user reviews found on the web. Well I just thought I would share that I have had similar troubles getting anywhere with the repair of my television. When you call customer service they do thier best to not identify when you may expect a repair, or what you should expect of them. Very frustrating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally I picked a very good TV..
I was very skeptical to puy my 3K+ money into a TV if it wouldn't be worth it. i did a lot of online research going through lot of HDTV Reviews especially DLP ones because I wasn't interested in Plasma/LCD etc because of their few well-known prolems and comparatively higher-costs. Initially was interested in Samsung6163 but later thought of 5674 but because of higher/better features-to-Cost ratio I settled with Toshiba 62HM94. For last 5 weeks, I have been proud owner of this fabulaous jewel. I have hooked it up with my Onkyo NR801 Receiver and Infinity TSS1100 speakers and a simple cheaper progressive-scan DVD player (with Component Video and Digital Coaxial/Optical output). And i don't need to go to a Theater anymore. Excellent unbelievable (more that I had expected) picture quality which mattered me most in my selection, Audio was too pretty good but I am using my home-theater setup. It's pretty light-weight (100 lbs) and compact size. Only 1 thing I found in Samsung and wished Toshiba too could have..Slim Bezel and TV-speakers at bottom instead of sides. I am very happy with Toshiba which delivers standard digital-cable signal as good that I can think of what if I drop my plan to subscribe HDTV...

5-0 out of 5 stars HD on this set is unbelievable!
I have had this set for three weeks now. It looked pretty good right out of the box. Now it looks even better. The HD channels are fantastic, digital channels are chrystal clear and even SD channels look very good after some tweaking. The secret to a better SD picture on HDTVs seems to be to turn the contrast down and the sharpness way down! A couple of days ago I added a Motorola Signal Booster and that really made a big diffence. The SD channels look a lot clearer and the color is better. I am getting my HD programing through a Motorola 6208 DVR through my cable company. They don't have cable cards available yet. I have everything running througha Yamaha RX-V2500 receiver so I have the TV speakers turned off.

I am adding to this review to report one problem with the set. Actually the problem is not just with this particular model but will all Toshiba sets that include the built in TV Guide program. I have had the TV for about a month now and the set is great except that the built in TV Guide does not work at all. When I try to access the TV Guide I get a message saying "There is no data for this screen." I have gone through the set up several times but the problem persists. From listening in on the AVS forums I learned that this is an ongoing problem with the set. I called Toshiba who acknowledged the problem and said that they are working on it. They thought they had it fixed but it did not work. This is causing a big problem for people using the cable card because they have no other cable guide available. People who bought the Symbio at the same time that they bought their sets are partcularly upset because without the TV Guide the Symbio will not work. However this is the only problem that I have with the set right now. If you plan to use a STB with this set then the problems should be minimal because you can use the cable guide that comes with that. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent picture and great price
I bought this TV to replace a 25 inch Magnavox in my bedroom.Space was a critical issue as my stand would only accept a certain footprint.

I put the Toshiba in and attached my satellite receiver to it by the S-video cable and away we went.Great, bright picture that is very clear and sharp.I am not using the speakers as I have a JVC receiver and small 3-way speaker system in the room.

In any event, an excellent buy.I paid $229 at Best Buy.The Toshiba brand is known for durability.I own four now and have had problems with none of them...

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Analog TV
2004 model of last year's 27A33 which received rave reviews.Quality TV with high end features at an outstanding price ($229.00 at Best Buy)-bought to replace 27" Sony 2 months ago while waiting for the 2006 HDTV situation to evolve.Picture quality and clarity are excellent; colorstream component video produces HDTV quality DVD's and highly recommend purchasing component video cables; sound/stereo quality is adequate/good but a non-issue as this TV is running through Onkyo/Polk stereo system for theater quality sound.Highly recommend. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Early Adopters Pick: June 2003. This is the first combination DVD player-TiVo digital video recorder.

Toshiba's SD-H400 digital media server offers the convenience of no-fee PVR service with the option for immediate upgrades alongside high-quality, progressive-scan DVD-Video playback--all from a single, easy-to-use component. The SD-H400 houses an 80 GB TiVo Series2 PVR that comes with TiVo Basic service, providing free, limited TiVo features right out of the box, with no subscription fees.

TiVo Basic service offers the ability to control live TV through features like pause, fast forward, rewind, and slow motion playback of live television; three days of electronic program guide; and manual recording capability by time and channel. The SD-H400 is the first device to offer TiVo Basic service.

The SD-H400's DVD-video section is equipped with a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter for maximum color purity, detail, and resolution. When connected to a television via the unit's ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, you'll be ready to enjoy Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive technology with either DVDs or TiVo PVR playback. The SD-H400 can also play formats such as DVD-R, DVD-RW, video CD, CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3 CDs.

Because the SD-H400 is built on TiVo Series2 technology, you have the ability to upgrade to full TiVo service to enjoy features such as Season Pass (the ability to record every episode of a program no matter when it airs, automatically), WishList (which finds and records programs that feature your favorite actor, director, or genre), Search by Title (which helps you find any show when all you know is its title), 14 days of program guide data, richer recording options, and an easy-to-use scheduling interface. (Full TiVo service costs $12.95 a month or $299 for a lifetime subscription; visit www.TiVo.com for detailed information.)

Another upgrade available to the Toshiba SD-H400 is the TiVo Home Media Option, a premium package of networked home entertainment. This configuration takes full advantage of the SD-H400's capabilities as a digital media server. The Home Media Option--an upgrade available via phone or broadband connection--lets you use the SD-H400's USB port to connect the SD-H400 to your wired or wireless home network and PC.

The Home Media Option adds the following features to the SD-H400: streaming MP3 files and digital photo viewing from a PC or Macintosh for playback through your TV or home-entertainment system, remote scheduling (through which you can schedule TiVo recordings from anywhere you can access the Internet), and connection to another TiVo Series2 PVR within your home (so you can share programs between the two units--for, say, viewing a program in the bedroom that was recorded in the family room, and vice versa). ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A good machine!
I bought this a month ago and it's a pretty good little machine. I was surprised by the size of it -- I thought it would be a lot bigger.

The Tivo interface on this machine is the best feature -- Tivo Service rocks. One note is that this one comes with Tivo Basic -- a limited (but still good) version of the service. You get a 45 day free trial of Tivo Plus (the regular Tivo service). The Tivo unit is just a Tivo Series 2, 80 hour unit.

I'd like to point out that the network issues in the reviews of this machine is not unique to this one. It's a problem with all Tivos. This machine supports several USB network adapters, including the Microsoft MN510, which is still available in stores (most of the supported adapters aren't available anymore).

The DVD player is excellent -- great picture quality. It also plays MP3, which is a handy feature if you have the machine hooked up to a stereo.

4-0 out of 5 stars Better TiVo than TiVo!!
I wanted something for my wife and me to better manage our TV viewing, yet I'm completely against paying a monthly-fee for recording TV programs. The Toshiba SD-H400 with TiVo Basic turned out to be a perfect product for us, until Media Center PCs go mainstream.

I didn't really need another DVD player at home (we already have 5 other stand-alone DVD players), but if that's the only way to get TiVo Basic service, so be it. Plus, the price I paid for this Toshiba (no rebate) is only (a bit) more than a stand-alone Series 2 TiVo (after rebate). For (the money), I got a progressive-scan DVD player, progressive output for TiVo, AND free life-time subscription to TiVo Basic service. What a bargain.

TiVo Basic Service:
Okay, so I don't get the Season Pass feature. However, once you're set to record a show (say, Friends at 8PM this Thursday), you can navigate to the To-Do list and select that program, and change the recording option to "Repeat this recording". Change it to weekly, then you're all set. The only risk if that if NBC changes the time of Friends to 9 due to say the State of the Union Address, then you'll record 30 minutes worth of a bunch of people clapping at nothing. But that's a risk I'm willing to take.

One feature I don't get with the Basic service is the show search feature. However, we got the TiVo to help with managing the shows that we KNOW we want to watch. With young children, we really don't have time to watch the programs that we didn't want to watch in the first place but are suggested to us. So I won't miss that feature. For new movies we have had Netflix 4-disc service since 2000. You can always navigate using the program guide to set up recording if you want to watch something.

If you visit TiVo forums such as tivocommunity.com, you'll see that other TiVo owners complaining about the fact that you can no longer use TiVo Series 2 for anything, including manual recording, without paying the (monthly) fee. With the Toshiba SD-H400, not only you can use it for manual recording, you have a 3-day program guide available to you over the phone or wireless network.

If the Plus features are important to you, then you can always upgrade to the full TiVo feature for the same fee as a stand-alone Series 2. It goes without saying that we have no intention of upgrading.

To get program guide via wireless network:
My Toshiba came with version 5.1.1 of the TiVo software, but version 5.1.1b is required for the newer version of the Linksys USB Wireless Adapter (v 2.8). It took a few tries to download the new version of the TiVo software. It would have done it over night, but I was impatient and wanted to pull the sw manually. Note that landline is required to get the software upgrade.

To record one channel while watching another:
I can watch a different channel than the one I'm recording because I split my cable signal so that one cable goes to the Toshiba and one goes to the TV. While recording on the Toshiba, I can use the regular TV remote to switch to other channels.

Any cons?
Remote: The Toshiba remote is not as nicely designed as that of the TiVo, which had just been recognized by the NY Times as one piece of industrial design mastery. The Toshiba remote is long and hard to use if you change channel via numeral buttons often.

Wireless adapter: Since the TiVo software it comes with is version 5.1.1, it does not support the newer versions of the Linksys USB wireless adapter (I got a v. 2.8). You will need a landline to download a new TiVo software to upgrade to version 5.1.1b for the Toshiba to recognize your network adapter.

Video extraction or copying: Like the stand-alone TiVo Series 2, there is no easy way of extracting the recorded video from the Toshiba device without opening it up (voiding the warranty) and load some files onto the base Linux operating system. The only other way is to video capture (analog cable to digital to analog to digital again) it back into a PC. Not the most elegant solution.

Upgrade: according to TiVo specialists at Weaknees, it's not simple to upgrade the HD on the Toshiba. You can replace the 80G HD with a larger one, but it will not see beyond the first 80G. Weaknees is working on a solution.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Product: Good Blend of Value and Function
I've had it for about a week and did not have any problems setting the system up. I was able to sign into the Tivo service quickly and am in the processing of connecting it into the wireless network and removing the phone lines.

For those who would like to simplfy their electronic gadgets for their TV, this is an excellent product. I was able to free up a DVD player for another TV in the house.

3-0 out of 5 stars Love It -- Failed in Seven Weeks
I wanted to get my wife a Tivo unit since her biggest hobbie is watching TV. The Toshiba SD-H400 intrigued me since the basic Tivo service is free and would save on the subscriptin service. So I bought the unit for Mother's Day.

I love the unit, and once you get used to it, the Tivo service is really great. However, after a mere seven weeks of use the Live TV function would "lock up". After powering off the unit, doing resets, and reformatting the hard drive, the unit would still lock up on a single frame every 2-3 hours of use. Toshiba Customer Service wasn't much help -- just told me to do a reset. I was able to finally get a replacement unit, but it took a lot of effort.

Great idea and cool features, but the reliability of the SD-H400 is suspect in my mind.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good value
I recently got this for $199. Excellent deal for the price. One of the best features is the free TIVO basic. This means if you upgrade later down the line, the resell value of this unit should be decent because you can get fairly good fuctionality without paying $12.95 per month. Or if you want to cancel your full TIVO, it will default to the free basic service. This is one feature real TIVO owners would like to have.

I also like the fact that I can connect this to just one component input on my TV and both the TIVO and DVD work fine.

As for noise, I don't hear it at all.

DVD plays virtually every type disk I tried, including DVD+RW. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Not Worth The Bulb Hassle
Okay, digital projection on a budget? I bought this item a few years back. The first $400.00+ bulb blew out in less than 300 hours. I contacted Toshiba and they replaced it, since it didn't get anywhere near the 2,000 hour "lifespan" they claim. The next bulb blew out at 460 hours. I called again. Nothing. No replacement. No service. I was on the phone with them for 4.5 hours and all I could get was 2 promises to "get a call back from one of our supervisors". None of my messages were ever returned. No one ever "called back". No replacement, or offer to replace, or even service sans the attitude. If the bulbs lasted 1400 hours, or even 1,000, I wouldn't be nearly as upset about this hunk'o'junk, but at $400.00+ per bulb, I'm paying an extra $60 dollars for every hour I watch it! Also, I've been typing $400.00+, because the bulb cost has risen every time I've checked into it. The current SRP is $453.00 for one bulb. If you get over 400 hours on a bulb, you're lucky! Avoid this unit, and after my experiences with their "customer service"-less calls, avoid this company's products like the plauge.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is sooo cool!!!
My husband has wanted to get a video projector for a while, but just never took the plunge. (...).I convinced him to get this for himself for a late Christmas present.

We brought it home and hooked it up easily. My family is watching "LOTR - The Two Towers" right now.We can not believe how cool this is.

I am so glad that we bought this. This video projector isneat because it is lightweight and portable. We can use it in any room.We are not limited by screen size, only by the size of the wall.So far our picture is 70", but as soon as my kids move a couple of books shelves (ha ha) we will expand to 150". ... Amazon.com Product Description

The RD-XS32 DVD player/recorder from Toshiba combines a versatile video recorder and a high-end DVD player with a clear, realistic picture and warm, natural sound. The RD-XS32 is the perfect next-generation upgrade from your old VCR and a powerful addition to your home theater.

The multidrive recorders on the RD-XS32 allow you to record onto an internal 80 GB hard disk drive (HDD), a DVD-R disc, or rerecordable DVD-RW and DVD-RAM discs. The HDD holds up to 103 hours of programs, and you can rapidly dub shows from the HDD onto a DVD. A high-speed dub of a recording from the HDD onto a DVD-R disc can be completed 24 times faster than the length of the program. In other words, two hours of recording can move onto a disc in a matter of minutes. DVD-R copies of recordings made by the RD-XS32 will play on almost all DVD players and DVD-compatible computers.

Toshiba's time-slip playback feature allows you to watch a program that is being recorded from the beginning while the rest of the show records. You can also use the time-slip feature to pause a live broadcast that you are recording, and then resume watching it from where you left it, whenever you want.

Setting up a recording is simple. The RD-XS32 uses Gemstar's VCR Plus technology, which lets you select the programs you want to record by name, without worrying about setting the right time and channel. You can schedule up to 32 different shows with this timer recording feature.

The programs that you have recorded are logged into an adjustable menu that displays the date, time, and channel that you recorded. You will also see a still-video image of the show you recorded in the menu. You can rename the listings and create chapters within the recordings that allow you to easily skip to your favorite scenes or to dub a cleaned-up copy of the show you've recorded onto DVD. The easy-to-use menu also features a live action window that lets you monitor the program you are currently recording or playing.

In addition to high-quality recordings, you'll get the most out of your DVD library as well. The RD-XS32 utilizes Toshiba's ColorStream Pro progressive-scan video technology to yield vivid colors, clean resolution, and reduced onscreen distortion. The RD-XS32 uses digital cinema progressive scanning to reproduce your DVDs in theaterlike clarity. While the RD-XS32 is compatible with both analog and digital televisions, you will get the optimum effect by using the player with a high-definition-compatible television.

In addition to playing a full range of DVDs, the RD-XS32 plays CDs and MP3 audio files, so you can enjoy your favorite music. You can also view digital JPEG photos from CDs created in your computer with the RD-XS32.

The RD-XS32 features rear-panel composite audio and video inputs, and RCA inputs on the front panel to connect your camcorder for dubbing onto DVD. An additional digital IEEE1394 Firewire jack is included on the front panel for an instant connection with digital camcorders. The Firewire connection automatically synchs up with your camcorder and creates a customized onscreen menu for dubbing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Machine, Even Better Than Its Predecessor (RD-X2)
I loved the RD-X2 enough that I would only have considered another Toshiba. (Much as I love this machine, it *does not* do 90% of what a Tivo will do. Tivo has season passes, suggestions, wish lists, search functions, and other features that make it absolutely fantastic. Buy both -- they really compliment each other.)

This is an absolutely great DVD Recorder. Picture quality is very good. You can record programs onto the hard drive, edit out the commercials, create custom thumbnails and titles, even customize your menu screen, and with a 4x DVD-R burn a DVD in 15 minutes. Its definitely more difficult to use than a VCR, and the manual isn't particularly well written or organized (it lacks an index), but its not that hard to get the hang of it. It works like a computer, not a VCR.

Features I Really Love (in no particular order):
1. Burning a DVD-R in 15 minutes. If you want to control the burn speed, use a 1x or 2x disc instead of a 4x.
2. Editting functions. I can set the timer to record programs on the hard drive while I'm away, then come back and edit them with ease and speed. I mark the chapters, can batch delete (its quick) and then recombine the chapters to make a single title. Or I can manually set the chapters, almost down to the frame.
3. Recording quality settings. You can select the video and audio recording settings, from 1.4 (EP equilvalent) to 4.6 (SP)on up to 9.2. Adjust your settings to get the best possible PQ and still fit your movie on the disc. At 1.4, I can get about 6.5 hrs on a DVD-R, at 2.2, 4.25 hrs, at 4.6, 2 hrs 6 mins.
4. You can watch another program you've already recorded while you record "live" programming. Or you can use the "timeslip" feature to watch a program from the beginning while its still being recorded.
5. You can give titles to "timer recordings" so everything has a title in advance.
6. For DVDs you've created yourself (*not* prerecorded DVDs) you can recopy programming back onto the hard drive and burn additional DVDs.
7. To copy to VHS, you can create a "playlist" and have your VCR copy all six hours worth of programming at once.
8. Out of town for a 48 hour Star Trek marathon? No tapes or discs needed, you can record all 48 hours on your hard drive as long as you have enough free space (135 hours at lowest setting).

About the black level bug issue, I've seen it reported, but I've played DVDs I've created on a variety of different DVD players (Toshiba, Sony, Hitachi, a PC and a Mac) and never experienced what some of the reviewers have complained about.

2-0 out of 5 stars Serious black level bug, plus 2 minor bugs
This DVD recorder can be perfect if Toshiba fixes the following 3 items, especially the black level bug, which is very serious.

1. Black level bug:
Due to NTSC America's +7.5IRE issue, Toshiba should consider that almost all DVD players in the US add +7.5 IRE to output already. Currently, RD-XS32 does not consider this fact, so the recorded DVD looks "washed out" (too bright) in other DVD player.

The best way to solve this problem is to have an option of recording level to adjust the input signal boost. For details, go to avsforum or ask Pioneer enginners about how they fix the black level bug from old DVD recorder to E50.

2. There should be an option of "forcing to output 3 digits" to IR blaster.
A lot of digital cable box needs the input to be 3 digits to correctly change channel. For example, to switch to channel 9, IR blaster should output 009 instead of just "9". Toshiba should add an option of forcing the output to 3 digits to work with most cable box or STB.

3. Record speed selection:
There should be an option of selecting speed of recording instead of just looking at the maximun speed that the media can handle. This could solve a lot of problem when the media is not "that good as it claims".

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of both worlds at the best price
This machine is awesome! Previously I bought a cheep Cyberhome recorder that was disappointing. The Toshiba has many more features. It is a bit complicated at first but after studying the manual you can easly record high quality tv shows and edit out all of the commercials. The hard drive feature is the only way to go if you are going to record TV. The Toshiba is better than the Panasonic because it will record from the DVD drive back onto the hard drive to make copies and it will record to DVD-RW that the Panasonic will not. I highly recommend this machine.

3-0 out of 5 stars um.. 80 MEGABYTES??
i think the webmaster or whoever wrote the description of this dvd recorder need to know a little about the difference between MB and GB... there is no way in world that you can record 109 hours on 80MB.. this site needs to go on the back page of pcmagazine bluffs =) well. anyways, considering this DVD recorder has 80.. GB! it's not a bad recorder and although it's a little pricey, i'm still gonna go ahead and give it a 3 stars. Hopefully, soon, they are gonna change that 80MB to 80GB.. Goodluck!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing OSM and operation
This unit is so easy to set up right out of the box. As complicated and chock full of abilities its still a snap to set up a record time and walk away. For the more techo types out there.. there are tons of options to fool with.

Good Job Toshiba! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars terrible
I purchased this player about a year ago and rarely used it. the picture ,the sound and everything else worked just fine until today . the player won't play anything at all . this is terrible . its not like i use it everyday. i recommend this player to no one. stay away.

1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, Bad, Bad Supplier
No Stars would be better. My husband bought me this unit for Christmas. This was his first online shopping experience and he nor I will ever shop from Office Depot, Tech Depot etc..ever again! You think you are buying from Office Depot when your item get shipped from Tech Depot who then denies that they are the same company when you call them.It is impossible to know ahead of time but, they will not return ANY Toshiba products even if they are defective. They did apoligize that Amazon has an incorrect return policy posted on their site.....go figure!Do not purchase from them unless you want absolutely NO support.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool toy but limited
After reading all the positive reviews, I decided to buy this model instead of the 2700 (although there appears to be very little difference between the two).Upon opening the box and testing the unit, I immediately noticed a 'hung' pixel in the upper left of the screen. It stays lit (white) on many scenes and becomes annoying at times.I was told that this is not uncommon and that another unit may exhibit a similar flaw.

The picture is very vivid once you get the proper alignment between yourself and the screen.Any movement up or down will necessitate a change in the screen angle to keep the picture quality the same. So, if you watch it from your lap in bed as I do, this may take some getting used to.Also, there are no color or picture adjustments that would allow you to customize the output to suit your tastes.I found this very limiting because some scenes are just too dark and the 4-way brightness adjustment is just not enough to get it right.

As far as the sound is concerned, the speakers are very weak and offer virtually no bass whatsoever (even though they are advertised as bass reflex).Headphones add a lot, but I also noticed quite a bit of distortion.Again, there are no sound controls that would otherwise give you control over this characteristic.

So, although others love this model, I cannot give it super high marks.Oh yes, the battery works fine and it has a remote that you need for many of the 'features', which seems ridiculous for a portable.I guess if you plan to use it to drive your home theater then the remote makes more sense, even though this model doesn't.

At $299 this would be a great value.Above that, it's average at best.

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor quality player for price!
Ok....I read all reviews about the 2600 before I bought it and was really looking forward to purchasing a high quality machine. Boy was I disappointed. The picture is heads above the other portable DVD's I have looked at, there's no argument about that. I find fault with this machine, in that, to change cinema screens you have to stop the machine. I hooked the player up to my television and the Video out, which is NOT seperate from the audio, (you have one plug in to the AV and three plugs going to audio and video)did not work. I hooked my daughters Polaroid DVD player up and it worked flawlessly! My Toshiba costs over twice what I paid for her's. Last, the navigation of the Toshiba is very hard to manuever around. They should have made things a lot simpler to get around this machine. I was really disappointed in this product. I sent it back immedietely.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good present!
I got it in the September for my husband as a wedding present and the month later it started skipping parts of the movie, or would not start the movie at all, you would have to turn it off and turn it back on. And later the screen would not show any picture, you can listen to the sound of the movie, but not watch it.
Since it has been over 3 months from the day I bought it Amazon would not let me return it.
Thank you Amazon and Toshiba for making my wedding gift the worse gift ever!
This product sucks!

Amazon.com Product Description

The Toshiba SD6915 five-disc DVD player offers up a whole host of advanced features in a sleek, silver package. The SD6915 is fitted with Super ColorStream Pro progressive-scan component-video (digital 3:2 pulldown) outputs, allowing for the highest-quality video signal to be sent from the DVD player to a component-video-equipped 480p TV for the smoothest, most filmlike images. When the player is utilized with an HD-ready set, typical NTSC artifacts--like video noise, dot crawl, and flicker--are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with excellent color purity. Working alongside is its 192 kHz/24-bit D/A converter to deliver warmer, more natural-sounding audio from many types of discs, including multichannel DVD-Audio and Super Audio CDs.

The player holds up to five discs, and you can set it to play them randomly. It'll play back songs randomly among each CD sequentially, or randomly among all the discs loaded at one time. The carousel tray allows access to load and unload discs while one is in play, so you'll never have to interrupt the music.

The SD6915 has playback options galore. Along with the aforementioned DVD-Audio and Super Audio CDs, you can play CD-R and CD-RW discs loaded with your music in either WMA or MP3 files, homemade DVD-Rs, and, of course, DVD-Video discs. You can even use it as a JPEG viewer to display digital photographs on a television set in the JPEG digital format. Just pop in a CD-R/RW with your favorite photos and start the show. Want to get a better look at something on the screen? Use the Digital Picture Zoom to select an area of the picture you want to magnify. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces superior color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. You can also expand letterboxed films to increase the viewable area onscreen.

Video isn't the only thing to benefit from this player. The SD6915 has a 5.1-channel output with Bass Management for onboard decoding of Dolby Digital, DVD-Audio, and SACD content with control of independent channel parameters (speaker size, delay time, etc.), including control for bass reproduction. Use this feature to customize the player's multichannel audio output to your particular home theater system. Coaxial and optical TosLink Dolby Digital and DTS surround-sound outputs are also available. These use a single RCA-type or optical output jack to send signature multichannel audio to an audio/video receiver with a compatible input.

1-0 out of 5 stars Horrible, buggy player
I've owned this player for a week now, and it's terribly buggy.

It won't turn on if it's set to output in progressive scan. It has annoying 1/4 second audio drops if you watch a DTS movie. It's response time to buttons pushed on the panel or remote is miserable. The ergonomics of the remote is horrible. It's picture isn't that good: http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=all&type=&manufacturer=1&maxprice=0&deInt=0&mpeg=0#ToshibaSD-6915

It'd be nice to have a working SACD/DVD-A/DVD-V changer, but this aint it. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars TechGeek's Review
Bought from BB (updated from 3960 model) in April. Will update as I use this product more.Hence the three stars only.Been running Elmo and workout dvds 2x a day without issues.
*No problems with the tray.
*Haven't tested out the SVideo or Component connections, but the RCA (red, white, yellow) connectors give pretty good quality hooked up to a 24" (Toshiba Flat Screen) TV.
*Slim profile fits nicely on top of the tv and looks good.
*Found an easy hack for it that works to enable multiple regions (search for SD 3860 or SD 240), although I haven't tried it yet.
*Using the TV remote exclusively so can't review the DVD's remote

1-0 out of 5 stars Keep away from Toshiba!!!
I bought SD-3960 and it died within 3 months' warranty period. Called Toshiba and they replaced it with a SD-3980. It has a very shallow tray comparing to other DVD players, which doesn't bother me too much. However, it keep frozen during the DVD play back. I have to unplug the power to reset the software according to Toshiba's technical support.
I bought sony and APEX DVD players from amazon before and they are always trouble free.

1-0 out of 5 stars User-hostile.
I'd give it zero stars, if I could.Stay well away. It's a flawed design. The tray itself was skimped on -- it's got about half the lip of a normal DVD tray, the tolerances are all bad -- it's the single worst piece of consumer equipment I've ever seen.
I had to jiggle the tray to get a test DVD in it, then turn it over and physically shake it to get the DVD out.

I have been pleased with Toshiba players in the past, so the lack of quality in this one completely blindsided me. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice PDA -- Networking Still Weak
.
As a PDA, the Toshiba e740 is the best I've seen yet. However, it, like all PDAs based on Microsoft's Windows CE, falls short on networking.

I've been hoping that Microsoft and its partners would get networking right some day. The Toshiba e740 looked like it might be the answer. With its built-in WiFi wireless network adapter, it appeared that the e740 at least would provide useful local area network connectivity. However, like most WiFi devices, the e740's range is too short and the battery drain is too high.

Oh, well, how about wide area networking with a wireless modem? I was able to find one wireless modem that would plug into the e740's compact flash slot. This modem, its name escapes me, adds 5 inches to the e740's almost 5 inches and costs an arm and two legs in monthly fees. With the modem in place, the e740 takes on the form factor of a clamshell handheld Windows CE PC. Forget that. I'm trying to replace a Blackberry wireless e-mail device.

I'm now looking at Handspring's Treo 300. It's got everything that the Blackberry delivers including size plus it's a wireless phone, has a color screen and supports web browsing. Wireless networking is part of your phone service and the cost for wireless phone and networking (from Sprint) is about the same as I'm now paying for separate wireless phone and Blackberry wireless e-mail.

For the record, I'm an IT consultant and author specializing in electronic communications. The latest edition of my book "Mastering Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server" (Sybex), is available from Amazon.com.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Microsoft Pocket PC Available Today
I recently lost my Compaq iPAQ H3975 and decided to replace it with the Toshiba e470 - I could not have made a better choice. Cosmetically the Compaq is superior, however it's important to note that the Toshiba more than makes up for that with real and useful features.

Check out those built-in slots for memory cards on the e740. The Compaq requires a bulky "expansion sleeve" (which effectively doubles the width of it) to read the memory cards I use in my Canon digital camera - the Toshiba does not as the proper MMC slots are built-in.

Wireless is a big factor too. Compaq has "Bluetooth" wireless capability, but for me it was completely useless since I don't have any Bluetooth-compliant printers, etc. The Wi-Fi Wireless in the Toshiba allows me to leverage our Apple Airport network - ten minutes after the thing charged up I could surf the web wirelessly from anywhere in my home. I can't stress how cool this really is when you just want to check news headlines, etc. and not have to deal with the hassles of booting a laptop.

Battery life on the e740 is about the same as the Compaq (I play a lot of MP3's), but the Compaq did sound louder on my Sennheiser headphones.

My only complaint with the e740 is its design; cosmetically the device looks positively 1999, particularly with its round chrome operational button. The e740's features place it way high on a usability scale, which makes it this author's choice of Pocket PC's available today. I have heard that the next generation of wireless PDAs from all manufacturers will either feature Wi-Fi or wireless phone capabilities, so you may want to just wait four more months and see what the future brings, but if you must have a Pocket PC today then this one should suit your needs very well.

3-0 out of 5 stars E 740 problems
This is a a great PDA execpt for one thing. It is has NO built-in memory to save stored data. The E 750 took care of this problem and Toshiba essentially stifed the owner of the orignal -including my letter to them which was written before one year warrantee. They never even answered my letter.

Their answer was to give you a $40 credit towards their old defective E740. Good customer relations - Toshiba

1-0 out of 5 stars No Upgrade
I was pleased with its performance until I realized that Toshiba doesn't offer the upgrade to Pocket PC 2003. Seems like just a ploy for me to sell it and buy the 755, which is the same machine. Needless to say I'm not happy with Toshiba's support of this product.

3-0 out of 5 stars So-so, but mine still works!
I bought this shortly after the recall (November 2002). It's been over a year and a half, and I still use mine daily! I've only had the 1% battery problem once because I usually sit mine to recharge overnight. Is it a hassle? Not if I need to update information on it daily (e-mails, appointments, etc).

All in all, it's been frustrating to see poor reviews and then see Toshiba not support the e740 any more. However, with proper management, you can get a WiFi
