2-0 out of 5 stars coffe table tv
In less that a year, the remote quit. Got another one from Remotes.Com. It didn't work either, so therefore assuming the problem is in the TV as I have been told by a technician. TV itself has nice picture, but no remote now. Disappointed.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy - Poor Quality Product
I bought this set, and almost ninety days to the minute after the warranty expired the set broke down, after which a perfectly pleasant customer service representative told me I was on my own.Nice concept, poor execution. My advice, find a better model. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The progressive-scanning SD-V391 is a convenient, one-unit source for high-quality DVD and VHS entertainment. The DVD deck plays a variety of optical content, including DVD-Video, DVD-R, audio CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD, as well as MP3 and WMA (Windows Media Audio) music files recorded on CD-R and CD-RW discs. A four-head, hi-fi VCR provides exciting stereo playback for your entire library of VHS tapes. You can even copy non-Macrovision-protected DVDs to videotape--perfect for sharing edited, DVD-based home movies with loved ones.

Whether your living room is currently home to an HDTV or you're merely thinking of "someday," the SD-V391 stands ready to deliver the full potential of DVDs. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The SD-V391 also performs 3:2 pulldown (Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive). DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

Into digital photography? This dual-deck model is a perfect complement to your hobby. Its JPEG feature makes it easy to view digital photo shots burned to recordable CDs from a variety of digital cameras. The unit's array of home-theater-ready video connections includes composite-, S-video, and ColorStream Pro component-video outputs (the VCR requires its own composite-video or RF audio/video connection). The DVD player's internal digital-to-analog converters work at 24-bit, 192 kHz resolution to ensure optimum sonic quality from a range of digital program material.

Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs (one each for the DVD player and the VCR) channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals from DVDs can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. In addition, readily accessible front-panel AV inputs permit easy connection for a game console or a camcorder for simple dubbing of home movies to the VHS deck.

For enhanced picture quality during VHS playback, the four-head hi-fi VCR uses a pair of 19-micron video heads, which deliver exceptional (near SP) picture quality of content recorded and played back in the extended play (EP) mode. Commercial skip lets you pass over commercials during playback. Other features include one-year, eight-event programming, high-speed (200x) rewind and fast-forward, index skip, auto head cleaner, and auto clock set--no more flashing "12:00"!

3-0 out of 5 stars Problem, but Awesom Customer Service
As I noted on 1 or 2 other reviews, when I got the unit the DVD drawer wouldn't open. Normally that would lead me to rate the unit a 1, but the Toshiba customer service was so exceptional and the unit (once working) decent enough that I rate a 3. First, the customer service was astounding. I had to call 4 or 5 times. Every time, they answered the phone on the first ring. The person spoke clearly and well and was knowledgeable - the call never had to be transferred. I was never put on hold. After they had me try a few things, they provided instructions for a return. As promised, the new unit showed up after about 7 days, and worked fine.

Combo units of this type, no matter who the manufacturer, are prone to problems, so it is critical to have that customer support.

I bought from Amazon because they were $20 cheaper than Best Buy or any other retailer. Best Buy wouldn't match the price, which surprised me - it's not like Amazon is generally cheaper. However, if the price is close would recommend buying from a retailer in case you need to return it. If you read reviews for combo players in general you will find lots of problems.

So far, happy with the replaced unit. Setup was easy and the remote is easy to use, which often isn't the case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Unit
This unit is simple to set up and use. Good Warranty, its great looking and has simple hook ups. Easy to connect to use with an inexpensive TV like my spare room TV with just a cable connector on the back. In from antenna (cable) and out to TV. (it does have s-video and other imputs and outputs if you need them) It works like a dream with a full feature remote. Play and watch a DVD, hit the one touch record button and your recording your personal DVD's to the VCR. (haven't tried a rental but I am sure most are copy protected anyway) So simple to use with excellent picture and sound quality. Will also play DVD-R and DVD+R. Haven't tried CD's but wouldn't use this unit for that anyway. You can't go wrong for the money. Now if it lasts as long and is as dependable as the Toshiba TV I have in my media room I will be very happy. Don't be afraid of this unit. Its Great!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba is sending me a new unit!!
I bought mine in Oct. of 2003. I have the same problem with the DVD player that others have been complaining about. I called Toshiba and a VERY nice lady is sending me a new updated model as soon as I send in my old unit. The trick is to call Toshiba's Customer Service number (800) 631-3811.

This certainly is much better than Panasonic or Sony has treated me in the recent past with my VCR players. I highly recommend anything Toshiba!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Loved it till it broke
Loved the easy hook-up, easy use of remote, looked nice and played fine. Purchased 11-06-03, and the DVD part stopped without warning 05-29-04. The kids never touched this one; it was all for Mommy and therefore subject to only gentle use. Now if you put a DVD in, it takes a long time to load, then comes up "ERR." And now the door makes a grinding noise when it opens. Severely disappointed, heartbroken, etc. Apparently VCRs, DVD players, and these combo units are meant to be disposable - work six months and then discard. If so, we may as well disregard brand names and buy the cheapest ones available. Forget quality, reliability, and pride of workmanship - those are things of the past.

3-0 out of 5 stars Globalization: You get what you pay for (and deserve)
Like cheap prices on products made in China? Do you actually expect them to work like Japanese electronics manufactured in the 1980's just because the Japanese brand is printed on the cabinet? Get real. There's no such a thing as a free-lunch. DVD margins are too low. So is quality. Period.

If your unit is misbehaving, try to cool it off. I have two of these gizmos (one upstairs and one downstairs), and I when I re-arranged my cabinets to give them more air and when I run them with the cabinet doors open, they behave. When they warm up, they stop running properly. Both units suffer from a heat-related transient defect that probably comes from mediocre manufacturing quality and components.

All this delight derives from paying employees $400 per year and keeping them in working conditions that would scare an American coal miner during the 1890's. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Delivery and Defect Problems Resolved
I ordered this product on Febr. 24th and it was delivered to my home on March 2nd.The TV was unpackaged in the truck and carried just into the door of my home.It was not turned on and inspected as promised in the Amazon shipping information. My son signed for the delivery as I was out of town.Upon my return, I noticed there had been delivery damage. The fabric on the bottom of the speaker grill was scaped and torn when the TV had been dragged over the sliding-door jam. Also, the TV had a manufacturer defect with a fixed black spot on the screen.

When I contacted Amazon (via email), they initially said too bad--the TV had been signed for.I contacted the delivery company and they said they would be responsible for the damage even if Amazon does not cooperate with the claim.Through either my followup email with Amazon or the persistency of the delivery company, I was shipped a new TV so the problem was resolved with a little persistency. By the way, if you want to talk to Amazon, the phone number is 800-201-7575.

I also asked Amazon to not penalize my early purchase by honoring the $100 gift certificate promotion that started Febr 28th.Afterall, most companies have a 30 day low price guarantee.Again, I was told "too bad" by Amazon. Amazon does have a 30 day low price guarantee, but promotions are considered outside of the guarantee.

I contacted Toshiba about the defect and I was given the name of a local authorized service center. The TV was promptly repaired by removing a small speck of plastic from the lens, problably dislodged when a cabinet screw was installed. The service person said that he rarely works on Toshiba TV's as they are very reliable.

Apart from the delivery damage, the product is excellent, despite the old technology. Adequate space and a wide viewing angle are not issues with my location of this TV, so I went with the proven technology, longer expected product life and much lower price tag. I still have an analog cable signal, so a high definition TV accentuates flaws in the signal.Like all rear projection TV's, the blacks are not as intense and the picture suffers when viewed at wide angles.I will not be able to fully appreciate this product until I have a HD signal. But, cartoons, video games, and DVD's are really cool.

Prior to purchasing this TV, I tried to read a lot about the various technologies and I found the Crutchfield website to be one of the most informative about HDTV.Crutchfield does not sell this old technology. I also looked at other various on-line dealers.Beware of both delivery AND shipping charges.Frequently, prices are quoted without including both charges so the ultimate price is not disclosed until very late in the purchasing process.

I was hesitant about making such a large purchase through a mail order vendor because Amazon does not have the best reputation when it comes to problem resolution. However, I did have a good outcome with a little persistency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good as it gets!
This Toshiba projection TV was the best that I found. Nice picture and great sound. The TouchFocus set the conversion just right. It has plenty of inputs of different types. I was a little surprised that it had no digital audio inputs however. I would have expected to find an optical audio or coaxial audio input. However since I was running my audio though a surround sound system as well as the TV, it was no big deal. There is HDMI input instead of the more standard DVI interface. You have to buy a $129 converter cable to use it. The DVI cable is close to the same price.

The menu driven interface is easy to use and setup was a breeze. I got it the same day I received the new Star Wars box set from Amazon. I really love it. The main thing that I was a little disappointed with was the thick scan lines. They're really noticeable on a dark screen. Not too bad but it may take a while to get use to it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Disapponted with shipping times
I am very much pleased with the quality of the product. The price was a very competive one, the shipping quote was reasonable. I do however have a problem with the (11)days its gonna take to get to my address. I ordered the item on the 3rd of September, and according to the delivery company affiliated with Amazon(Eagle Delivery) its not gonna arrive until the 14th. Other than that I believe my purchase with Amazon was a quality one. I am however quite excited about experiencing High Definition TV on my new Toshiba 57h84(Whenever it gets here). I am so upset with the shipping company that I will not order any more big screen tv's from amazon. The shipping company blames amazon for inadequate information on the track shipment page, saying their estimates are wrong. I dont, wont, and will not seek to use Eagle shipping Company any more, because I dont understand how a shipment coming from Harrisburg, PA, can get to NC, and end up in Charlotte, completely bypassing the destination address in Greensboro. I am so disappointed to the point of being sick. Amazon needs to invest in another shipping company, or they are gonna lose customers.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased with product and Amazon.com
After careful research and looking at many large screen tv's, we ordered the Toshiba 57H84 HD-Ready Rear-Projection TV with HDMI Input. This tv has the best picture of any we looked at.Amazon.com was very easy to deal with and had speedy delivery with a very curtious and helpful delivery company.I ordered on a Thursday and was delivered the following Tuesday.

5-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba all the way
I decided to take the plundge into HDTV world and found myself knee deep with many different choices. After weeks and many long hours of research, I came across the Toshiba 57H84. And let me tell you it was hands down the best value for the money, which blew away the competion with stunning picture clarity and connectivity option's. In other words simply Amazing!!!! ... Amazon.com Product Description

Delivering great convenience on two fronts, Toshiba's D-VR3 combination DVD recorder and VCR opens a world of video recording and archiving options while saving valuable shelf space. It's a 4-head, hi-fi stereo VCR and a full-featured, progressive-scan DVD player that handles your DVDs, CDs, MP3 music discs, and JPEG-filled digital-photo discs, all wrapped into a component that stands just 3 inches tall. The recorder can store up to 12 hours of audio/video--whether broadcast programming or copies of your home movies to share with loved ones--on a 4.7 GB double-sided DVD-RAM disc and 6 hours on a write-once DVD-R or recordable DVD-RW.

The D-VR3's disc recorder offers the flexibility of recording on both DVD-RAM--perfect for instant chapter access and for multiple rerecordings--as well as DVD-R, the most widely compatible of the many DVD formats (great for sharing camcorder footage with loved ones). DVD-RW compatibility lets you erase and rewrite, though relatively few players and computer drives will play back DVD-RWs. DVD-RAM discs can be read, written, and erased more than 100,000 times.

Time Slip lets you use the device like a digital video recorder, or DVR. Because of DVD-RAM's speedy transfer rate, you can view the recorded portion of an ongoing program from the beginning, while still recording the show in progress.

The D-VR3 features a 181-channel cable-compatible tuner and advance programming accessible to both the VCR and the DVD recorder. Input your own program data or take advantage of built-in Gemstar VCR Plus+ (C3) technology for simplified programming. XDS auto clock set with Daylight Savings adjust ensures that your recorder will always be on time.

In addition to recording new video content, the D-VR3 lets you transfer and even enhance your favorite video recordings to durable, space-saving discs--a terrific way to archive, preserve, and access your movies and family videos. A convenient front-panel IEEE-1394 input is perfect for direct digital transfers of mini DV camcorder footage.

For superlative playback, the D-VR3 is equipped with a 10-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog converter capable of great color purity and detail. When connected to a high-definition or HD-ready television through its ColorStream Pro component-video outputs, the D-VR3 delivers a progressive-scan DVD picture. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, giving you higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts.

The D-VR3 also features Toshiba's Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 pulldown reversal) for DVD playback. DVD mastering commonly introduces a distortion when adjusting 24 frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown reversal digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture.

The deck's abundant connections include 2 composite-video and 1 S-video input, 2 sets of stereo analog (left/right) RCA inputs (with a choice, for DVD recording, of uncompressed, linear PCM or, to conserve disc space, Dolby Digital 2.0 audio encoding). The DVD and VCR sections share a single composite-video output and stereo analog audio output (saving input space on your TV or audio receiver), while the DVD player also offers the component-video outputs mentioned above, an S-video output, and a pair of digital-audio outputs (1 coaxial, 1 optical) for channeling Dolby Digital and DTS multichannel surround signals to a compatible digital surround receiver.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful picture--great tv
I've had this tv for just over a year and have been very happy with it in general, as well with the well-formatted remote and easily navigable menu. The 14" flat screen creates a larger-than-you'd-think, impressively vibrant picture, which, along with the surround sound speakers, is perfect for viewing movies. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I have not had any problems with either the tv itself or the remote. Ultimately, I liked this tv so much, and have had so many compliments on it, that I bought the 27" version for my living room. Great tv.

1-0 out of 5 stars Sorry I bought it.
Less than three months after purchase, it's in the shop; an authorized repair center. Picture started "snapping" 'till no more picture. They replaced the picture tube and something else. I took it home. Then, it started displaying flickering white lights across the top of the screen and a vertical rectangular discoloration on the left side of the screen. They've been working on it for a week ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for DVD
This set is awesome for conditions where a larger set is impractical (kitchen, workbench...), but you still want quality.

This set comes with component video inputs, colorstream, adjustable aspect ratio, headphone jack output and surround sound. This is PERFECT for ppl like me who watch DVDs with a headphone while working at the computer.

This set has good reception of local channels with a separate indoor antenna. This set is also bristling with inputs (front and back), so it doubles as an excellent little video monitor.

The built-in speakers are very small and do not have much bass. Use headphones (front panel jack) and crank the volume up. The sound is sharp and clear with DVDs, CDs and strong TV stations.

The picture with component video and colorstream is razor sharp and brilliant. There are no raster lines and the picture is flat. You can even adjust the aspect ratio to accomodate widescreen DVDs.

I compared similar 14" flat-screen TVs for 6 months, and the Toshiba 14AF44 offered the best performance for the price by a wide margin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great picture with flat screen
I purchased this unit to use in our travel trailer mainly for its small size and flat screen. It fits very tight, but serves it's purpose well since the flat screen makes it viewable from different angles, and with 6 people watching at once, thats important to us. The screen is clear and bright, best color and picture I have seen among all the top brands. Had it for 4 months- no problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive picture - s video, FST Pure picture tube
I just bought the set - my initial reaction is very good.I knew the sound wouldn't be a big plus as it is a 14" set....but comparing other 14" sets in the store it had the best sound and picture.Amazon offers it at a great price - I paid $15 more. This is a tv for my office I have a s-video capable dvd and a pc - I plan to hook everything up - so my sound card and pc will boost the dbx stereo the tv offers. For a non-primary tv I am quite pleased and I have had good experiences with Toshiba products. For the money and features and my intended use I give it a thumbs up - let's hope the other user who had his/her set fail was a rarity.Btw - there is a 1 year parts and 2 year warranty on the picture tube - pretty much standard for the industry. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Beware of image burn
I bought the Toshiba 46 inch rear projection TV in November. Decent set, HD looks really good. Good sound quality. Overall a good TV.

This was my first big screen rear projection purchase. I'm not one to read the operation manuals so this problem I am having with "image burn?" is my fault. But the TV itself makes it hard to avoid this problem. I knew veiwing the PC on tv and video games are bad for rear projections. But so is watching the TV in "natural" mode. In the manual is staets a few time that you should watch programs sing the entire screen, no bars on the top and botton (widescreen dvds sometimes cause that) or bars on the right and left or the "natural" settings. OK, I'm fine with that now that I know, might have been nice if the sales guy mentione dthis to me :(

Any how, when you turn on your set it always defaults to the natural setting. I have an HD digital cable box and it only uses the "whole" screen on the HD channels. So if Toshiba knows about this problem why not have the TV default to full screen? It's a bit of a pain to turn on the TV (especially since I use the cable remote) and then set the TV to a setting other than natural.

I had the TV repair guy out (best buy warranty) and he said he sees alot of this with rear projection TV's but usually not in only 6 months of use. (this burning actually happened after 4 months if use) Replacing the tubes cost as much as the TV.

Learn from my mistake if you purchase this TV :)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Bang for the Buck
Excellent Set.Purchased from Amazon and their specialized delivery saved me the 1st time ordered.I returned the set with no problem and they shipped out another to replace the 1st shipment.(Broken in delivery). As far as the set quality goes you will get no better set than this for the price. There is a major difference, as you may imagine, whent the HDTV is hooked on,but pound for pound, even on regular cable, I would buy this TV again.

2-0 out of 5 stars Toshiba - poor customer service
I purchased a model 46H84 projection TV in September, 2004. It only worked properly for 2 weeks and then the image becameso distorted, the TV cannot be used. I called the local Toshiba service center on October 28.
They came out on November 4th and could not fix it and had to contact Toshiba.
On November 9 they called and said the red picture tube was bad and it would take 2 weeks to get parts.
On November 17 they changed the estimated time of arrival to December 15.
Since November 17 I have been calling Toshiba customer serviceand they keep telling me to wait.
I have had this TV 10 weeks now and it has worked properly for only 2 weeks. It looks like I won't even have a TV for Christmas.
And - these delays have used up 2 months of the warranty.
* UPDATE - Jan. 21 *
They delivered my TV on Dec. 23, but, without HDTV function. It was picked up again on Jan. 11 and returned on Jan. 14.
The TV is now working fine and the picture is good.
Be aware that that the matching stand is not included and is only6-1/2" high inside.

5-0 out of 5 stars what more do you need?
If you are looking at this unit, you are probably like me. A first time, budget-minded HDTV buyer.I researched many units, and decided to go with this one because it was on sale for $999.

Picture with HD: With HD (through Comcast) it is awesome. My friend has a TV that he spent $4000 on, and he says that he can't notice a difference in picture crispness.

Picture without HD: It is at least as good as what I had on my 27" TV prior to this.It ain't crisp, but it is very acceptable for a TV this large.

I do notice some "artifacts" on this TV. If you are looking at this level of unit to buy, you probably don't even know what that means.I didn't!It means that you see some "streaking" of white on fast moving images. It happens so rarely, though, that you won't notice much.

The TV has some great stretch settings, too.I was worried that any signal coming in at 4:3 would look distroted when I stretch it to 16:9, but this unit has a setting that only stretches the top and bottom, removing letterboxes but not distorting the main pic.It also has one that stretches left and right, making 4:3 fill the screen without distrotion.

The sound is better than the sound from my 27" unit.It is all I need for my small room, until I get a surround system.

Inputs:It does have an HDMI input. I'm told that is the top of the line input. I run my cable and DVD via the component inputs for ultra clear pic.

In short, get this TV. For the price, I have absolutely no regrets!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good TV, but a few things you should know ...
Just a few things you should know before buying this TV, or any rear projection HDTV in general:

1. If you live nearby a brick and mortar store that carries this TV, see if they will let you hook a DVD player up to it, and then get the TV out of 'torch mode' by lowering the brightness and contrast (easily done via the remote) to about 50 - this will give you a much better idea of how it will look in your home. Also, when you get the TV home, bringing it out of torch mode is the first thing you should do, as leaving these settings cranked up to the max could damage your TV. If you see this thing on display in a store, they usually have it connected to an HD signal running at 1080i, the best resolution possible. Movies on DVD will not look *quite* that good.
2. These TVs don't exactly come ready to watch, as they require a little tweaking, especially this TV, as it tends to have a 'red push' that you'll need to get rid of. Doing this is not exactly brain surgery, and the Avia Home Theater guide (also available on Amamzon) is a big help, but you should at least be aware of this.
3. Burn-in: While not as bad as Plasma TVs when it comes to image burn-in, you must be consciously aware (but not paranoid) about the possibility of burn-in with this set. If you're the type of person who likes to play video games (which usually display a lot of static images, such as health meters), for hours on end, you may want to go with an LCD or DLP rear projection TV, if you can afford one :) Otherwise, a direct view (conventional) CRT HDTV may be better for you.
4. If you plan to use a component video cable for DVD playback, some people will say that the kind of cable you use doesn't matter. While the kind of cable you use does not matter on other TVs, it DEFINITELY matters on this one. From my experience, there was a HUGE difference in picture quality between a set of $30 Acoustic Research cables and a $100 set of Monster Ultra THX cables. After trying the Monster cables, I ordered a set of component cables from www.bluejeanscable.com, which are about as good as the Monster cables for a much lower price. Even if you elect to start out with a cheap cable, you should look into upgrading the cable if you notice the picture quality is not as it should be.
5. There is no HDTV tuner built into this set, which means you'll either have to buy the tuner seperate ($200+) or get one from your cable or satellite company, which will usually provide one for you. You don't need a tuner simply for watching DVDs though.
6. About the look of the TV - previous reviewer said it doesn't look like the one in the picture. Actually, it looks very close, except Amazon shows the TV sitting on its optional stand - the bottom part of the TV is actually one piece, not two. If you want to see what it really looks like, search for the model number on www.bestbuy.com.
7. In regards to what the previous reviewer says about room size, since I have the TV in a small room, I don't think the size of the room matters, just as long as you're setting at least 6-8 feet from the set.
8. For more information about these topics and more, check out www.hdtvoice.com.

Hopefully, I didn't scare you away with all of this info, because this is probably the best 46" CRT rear projection HDTV you'll find in this price range - I highly recommend it! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Frustrated Customer
DO NOT GET THIS TV unless you want a really large paperweight!A few weeks after delivery the TV stopped working, and could not be repaired.Repairman said that he is called to repair several of this model a week and recommended returning it and getting something from a different manufacturer.Tohiba customer service was very unpleasant and it took sever weeks of arguing to get it returned.I have just purchased a SONY and am looking forward to receiving it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big bang for your buck !
I write reviews for various gadgets and restaurants and this is the 1st time when I do not have anything negative to write about the quality. I bought this TV back during 2004 Thanksgiving sale from BestBuy and paid about $1350. It took about few weeks for the picture tube to break in and show its real colors ! Then I had a technician from best buy come over and calibrate it (as you may already know that Rear Projection TVs need calibration, but if you have the bestbuy protection plan they would do it for free at your home). Ever since then all my friends come to my place to watch the big games, movies and even to play xbox in widescreen - and everyone just drools over the picture quality. The picture is crisp, specially when watching HD content and watching movies on DVD. I do not watch analog channels since almost all of them are in HD now for a small difference of $7 or so per month. I looked at Sony, Samsung and Toshiba - Toshiba won the race by a mile. Here are a few things worth mentioning about Toshiba 51H84:
- Picture is absolutely crisp
- Colors are beautiful (try watching Shrek on it)
- Even movies in 4:3 look great
- Size does matter ! I was about to settle for 42 and I am extremely glad I pushed myself to 51"
- The multi-choice zoom feature will satisfy your appetite to zoom any sort of programming.
- 7 inputs including HDMI (I use Component and am satisfied)

The only negative:
- Doesn't have a built in HD tuner, so you cannot use its cool Split (2 screens) and Channel Scan feature (split screen in 12 screens). It has 2 inputs for Antenna, I connected one to the cable box and other bypassing the cable box, so I can screen the channels in analog (using TV's analog tuner) and then watch it in HD.

There is a false rumor that Toshiba's doesn't do a good job with green - Not true ! Myself and few of my friends spent hours looking at 3 different brands and Toshibas (after calibration) does the Best job with all R G and B (Sony RPTV didn't do a good with Reds) !
Calibration is the key - make sure you spent some time to tune it after few weeks of picture tube breakin period.

I would recommend this TV as a big bang for your buck !

1-0 out of 5 stars Stay Away from this TV
I owned the tv for about 3 weeks, then all of a sudden the tv turned off.The little red light on the front was blinking and there was clicking sound when I unplugged it and tried to turn it on again.A service technician came out and ordered a new part for it.

Then less that 4 days later the unit made a pop sound and the picture schrunk about 3 inches on the left and right sides - no luck.

Luckily, I bought it from a local store and can return it , no questions asked.

I suspect from reading other posts that this Toshiba has put a real lemon on the market.

1-0 out of 5 stars Fun while it actually worked!!!
I just got this tv 15 days ago and was perfect up until today and it decided to make a slight pop noise and the screen turned black and then the power light started flashing red and now it wont turn back on. I unplugged it and all the cables and an hour later tried again and still the same thing, just a blinking red light. So I decide to call Toshiba and they dont even have 24x7 support. It was only 7:30pm and there normal hours are 8am - 7pm. Thats pretty bad when a multi billion dollar company cant even have 24x7 support. I am not the only person I see in these reviews that got the same kind of lemon. If Amazons return policy would except this back I would return it in a second. If it cant even work for a month thats pretty bad.

UPDATE!!!!!!
IT IS NOW 7 WEEKS LATER AND THE REPAIR SHOP DOING THE WARRANTY SERVICE STILL HAS MY TV. THEY HAVE ORDERED MULTIPLE PARTS AND STILL CAN'T FIX IT. I COMPLAINED TO TOSHIBA MULTIPLE TIMES IN THE LAST 3 WEEKS ABOUT THE QUALITY OF SERVICE I AM RECIECING AND THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. I HAVE TALKED TO 3 SUPERVISORS AND THEY ALL SAY I JUST HAVE TO WAIT FOR THEM TO FIX IT AND ALSO THEY WILL NOT OVERNIGHT PARTS TO HELP GET IT FIXED FASTER. THEY SAY THERE SHIPPING/PARTS DEPARTMENT ISNT CAPABLE OF OVERNIGHTING PARTS.

TOSHIBA WILL NOT JUST REPLACE THE TV EITHER THEY SAID IT HAS TO BE REPAIRED.

THE ONLY COMPENSATION TOSHIBA IS EVEN OFFERING ME IS A 3 MONTH EXTENDED WARRANTY. WHICH THEY SHOULD GIVE ME BY DEFAULT JUST BECAUSE THE REPAIR IS TAKING SO LONG.

I WILL NEVER BUY FROM TOSHIBA AGAIN AND I WILL NEVER ORDER ANYTHING OF THIS SIZE AND PRICE OFF THE NET EVER AGAIN.

SPEND THE FEW DOLLARS MORE AND BUY IT LOCALLY SO YOU CAN AT LEAST TAKE IT BACK.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!ANOTHER UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

IT IS NOW OVER 10 WEEKS LATER AND THE REPAIR SHOP STILL HAS NOT FIXED IT AFTER ORDERING OVER 8 DIFFERENT PARTS. TOSHIBA STILL REFUSES TO SEND ME A NEW REPLACEMENT. NOW AMAZON IS SAYING THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO HELP ME EITHER. DONT BUY NOTHING FROM TOSHIBA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

########## ANOTHER UPDATE TO THE OTHER UPDATE ############

It is now 3 months later. I still do not have my TV back from the repair shop. The Repair shop named J Rudy Associates in Pittsburgh Pa USA is the ones that have my TV and still are unable to fix it. Toshiba is STILL unwilling to do anything besides make me keep waiting for the TV Repair shop. Amazon WONT do nothing unless Toshiba sends them a Fax'd Paper saying they arent going to fix it. So no matter how I look at it I just spent all this money to be RIPPED OFF!@#@$@*^#%&$!@!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great TV
This is my first large screen TV and I have to say I am impressed.I got it about a month ago and was very surprised how easy it was to set up ( bass, treble, picture etc). The instruction booklet is actually easy to follow, which is a surprise in itself.I have a dvd and vcr hooked up to it and have to say the picture quality is excellent.
Just a couple of things I have found out when I got the set that should be known. When you get the set delivered wait an hour or so before you turn it on. This will bring the set to room temperture. It may sound foolish, but if the components of the tv are cold and you immediately turn the power on they could get expand to quickly and could crack. The set may have been in a delivery truck for a day or two in a cold climate.
When you finally do turn the set on make sure you hit the one touch control on the front, it automatically adjusts the unit for your environment. One other thing. For some reason the manufacturer adjusts the contrast to 100.I would knock it down to about half of that or whatever you are comfortable with.
Remember this is a projection tv so the best way to view it is about ten feet away and in a sitting position.
All in all, so far I am very pleased with the set and recommend it highly.

1-0 out of 5 stars Warning!Don't buy this item!
This item worked for approximately 120 days. I gave it to my daughter for Christmas and it quit working in mid-April.The the DVD player refused to open,we could not switch it from TV to DVD and we couldn't change the channels. When I took it to be repaired at a Toshiba approved repair shop,I discovered it was going to cost $140 to be fixed. This is definitely the last Toshiba product I will ever buy!

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this.
I gave one of these to my wife for a present. It quit working after 6 months of lite usage. It took months to get fixed, parts shortage. It went bad again in just over 2 months. This Toshiba TV is junk and should be recalled. It will be some time before I purchase Toshiba again.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy This Product
Originally, I purchased this unit because the size matched my needs and the price did not seem exorbitant.I also thought that a Toshiba would be dependable. But after only two months of light use-2 hours per week max-the DVD unit would play erratically and stop for no reason.I would also have trouble opening the slot so that the DVD could be removed. This would happen no matter which DVD was playing so I knew it was not the fault of any individual DVD but of the unit itself. The first time I called Toshiba, the customer service rep suggested that I unplug the unit so that it could "reset itself" and that I purchase a DVD cleaner to see if that would take care of the problem.I did as instructed but, not surprisingly, the problem persisted.

On my second call to Toshiba, I got the same service rep.We discussed my bringing it to an authorized Toshiba dealer, the procedure, he took information on me and the machine, and I was told that a file had been opened on my case.

On February 5, 2005, I brought my TV/DVD player to the closest authorized repair station. The shop's name had been given to me by the service rep and it also appeared on Toshiba's website.

At the beginning of March, because a month had elapsed and I had not heard from the repair company, I called them regarding my machine. They told me that due to the high number of these sets breaking down, Toshiba was not sending its repair agencies sufficient parts quickly enough so that they could keep up with the demand for repairs.I was concerned about this because I wanted my TV back and, furthermore, I knew that the warranty date had now expired so that if I had any further problems with the set it would not be covered by the warranty.

On Monday, March 7th, I decided to contact Toshiba itself to investigate the problem.(This was my third phone call to the company!)I spoke to another young man who could not find my file and, through conversations with his supervisors, I was told that my TV/DVD player was not being repaired because Toshiba did not have a file on it.This was absurd! As of that date, I had done everything the company had asked me to do and had spent time giving my purchasing information to two customer service reps. Not only did I have to waste time duplicating my efforts, but I was further insulted by the supervisor(s) who 1) initially tried to deny that I had brought the unit to an authorized repair shop and 2) then declared that it was my word against Toshiba's that I had ever spoken to any of their customer service personnel. The audacity-what ever happened to the business adage that the customer is always right? How dare Toshiba try to shift the blame for their inefficiency on to the consumer?

On Tuesday, March 15th, I received a call from Toshiba-they wanted to verify my choice of repair agent because, again, the information had not been entered into my "file."I had to call them back on Wednesday-my fourth phone call-to tell them that I was staring right at the company's name on their website, they were truly an authorized repair agency.I was told that this was the final bit of information that they needed to expedite my set's repair. We shall see. . . .

I have never been so dissatisfied with a company and its workings in all my years of purchasing computers and other electronics. This product is shoddy and Toshiba's commitment to customer service is non-existent. Stay away from this unit and this company!

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice features - but can't play music without screen on
I was pleased with the following:

- Quality of picture
- Quality of sound [good, not fantastic].
- Ease of use
- Technical support from Toshiba. In fact, I would say the support was nothing short of astonishing. For a mid-day call, a REAL person answered on first ring, and answered my question politely within 30 seconds. You could not ask for better support.

I was not pleased with the fact that although the DVD player plays audio settings, you have tohave the TV screen displaying to do so.So if you are trying to go to sleep to music, you can't easily do this. The only work around Toshiba gave me was to turn down the brightness.

1-0 out of 5 stars --PLEASE-- avoid this product!
As many other reviews indicate, this Toshiba product is a waste of time and money.PLEASE save yourself the trouble and find an alternative product to purchase.

I bought this model at a retail store, and when I first turned it on, I was impressed by the crisp picture and sound quality.I ran through the brief set-up process, popped-in a DVD, and was happily enjoying it.After about fifteen minutes passed, I noticed that the screen began to "flicker": the brightness would momentarily increase on portions of the screen, anywhere from a 1-inch band at the bottom to 3/4 of the entire screen. The flicker continued in subsequent days, beginning anywhere from five to forty-five minutes after the TV was turned on and occurring about every ten or twenty seconds.I also connected my Playstation 2 to the television and observed the same flickering problem.I later moved the set away from all other electronics and power cords, but the problem remained.

I exchanged the set for another, and the new set had the SAME flicker but WORSE, as it began immediately upon turning on the set, and the flickering was accompanied by a quiet "snapping" noise.Within a half-hour of viewing a DVD, the flickering became accompanied by a intermittent DIMMING as well!Horrible!

My first set was manufactured in October '04, and the second set has a November '04 sticker, so this defect apparently goes beyond "one bad day in the factory;" defective sets may have been produced for weeks, or even months.

As I write this, there seem to be no top-name competitors offering a similar product, which is sad, because this set was -exactly- what I was looking for.

PLEASE take the numerous negative reviews into account and do not waste your time on this set.I usually trust Toshiba, but they sure released a lemon with this one. ... Read more

The 16:9 62HM84 uses a proprietary system called TALEN (Toshiba Advanced Light Engine); based on Texas Instruments' HD2+ DLP chip, it enhances brightness and contrast while keeping the 1,280 x 720-pixel progressive resolution (720p). Toshiba's TheaterWide TVs challenge direct-view CRT models when it comes to reproducing deep blacks and details in dark or shadowy scenes.

What is DLP?
The DLP processor DLP, or Digital Light Processing, is a technology that bounces a colored light beam across an array of hundreds of thousands of hinge-mounted microscopic mirrors attached to a single chip, called a "micro mirror device" (below, pictured with the head of a pin).
DLP mirrors dwarfed by the head of a pin
Each of the mirrors can be pointed toward or away from the light source thousands of times per second, providing not only minute color detail but also sharper resolution than even LCD displays.
Detail of resolution comparison between LCD and DLP
This set is HDTV-ready (it needs an optional hi-def receiver to get HD signals), but can improve standard-definition video thanks to Toshiba's multi-step PixelPure video processing system, which optimizes the three main picture quality factors: resolution, contrast, and color. All incoming signals are upconverted by the built-in "scaler" to match the DLP chip's native 720p resolution.

PixelPure encompasses 8 different processing circuits. Among its components are: 6.2 million-pixel oversampling (for higher perceived resolution), real-speed progressive scanning (which uses additional sampling points to create smoother diagonal lines), a Magic Square algorithm (for smooth, natural color gradation), Dynamic Contrast Enhancer (for higher perceived contrast and increased color saturation), and Color Detail Enhancer (to maintain fine image detail in color-saturated areas).

DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology uses an optical semiconductor, known as the Digital Micromirror Device, or DMD chip, to digitally manipulate light. The chip contains a rectangular array of up to 1.3 million microscopic mirrors, each of which measures less than one-fifth the width of a human hair. A DMD panel's micromirrors are mounted on tiny hinges that enable them to tilt either toward the light source (on) or away from it (off)--creating a light or dark pixel on the projection surface. The bit-streamed image code entering the semiconductor directs each mirror to switch on and off up to several thousand times per second, such that the mirrors can reflect pixels in up to 1,024 shades of gray.

The HD2+ DLP chip ensures an ultra-clean image by filling in the dimples, or vias, in the mirrors to avoid stray light. It increases both brightness and contrast, resulting in an impressive color-corrected contrast ratio (2,200:1) at 1,100 ANSI Lumens. The set's TheaterFine HD Super Fine Pitch screen reduces the physical space between the lines on the lenticular screen, resulting in a finer, sharper, more detailed picture.

Toshiba's DFine Hi-Speed VSM (velocity scan modulation) improves contrast and overall picture sharpness, while the CableClear DNR+ digital noise reduction optimizes poor NTSC signals from antenna or cable, further eliminating video noise ("snow") for a clean, crisp image. Cinema Mode circuitry (3:2 pulldown switch) identifies original film-based content from DVDs, then reassembles the frame sequence to more accurately reproduce the original 24-frame-per-second material.

A 3D Y/C (4 MB, 10-bit) digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleed and significantly reduces detail noise, seen as shimmering or flicker, in complex or intricately detailed scenes. Color temperature controls allow you to adjust white balance. The "Warm" setting reduces the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased.

The 62HM84 has plenty of inputs for connecting all your audio and video components. In back you'll find two RF, two composite video, two S-video, and two HD ColorStream component video, as well as an HDMI digital input. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface that supports standard, enhanced, or high-definition video, plus 8-channel digital audio--all on a single cable. A set of front composite and S-video inputs make hooking up a game console or camcorder a snap.

Other features include HD Window dual-tuner POP (picture-on-picture) with PIP sound for listening to two programs simultaneously, the new Radiance DC Lamp with high brightness and lower power modes for extended life, individual audio/video settings by input type, sleep and wake timers, Real Speed progressive scanning to create smoother diagonal lines, Color Transient Improver for sharp transitions on color changes without bleeding, and Color Detail Enhancer to maintain fine image detail in color saturated areas.

Aside from the 20-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 62HM84 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language. Meanwhile, SRS WOW combines 3D Sound (simulated surround sound from any stereo audio) with TruBass (yet another low-frequency enhancement) and Focus (which clarifies voices). The StableSound volume leveler eliminates drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break.

The Basics
When is a notebook not just a notebook? When it's one of Toshiba's new Qosmio notebooks. Distinctive from other mobile computers by virtue of its strong multimedia attributes and easy adaptability to home entertainment setups, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is a superb portable package that impresses in virtually any environment. Powerful, exceedingly versatile, and packed with cutting-edge amenities, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is well-suited to discriminating individuals with a passion for multimedia.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPUs on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, e-mail, and the like. The Qosmio E15-AV101 is equipped with an Intel Pentium M processor 735 running at 1.7 GHz. This is one of three components that comprise Intel's efficient Centrino system, the others being a specialized Intel chipset and integrated wireless support. Centrino-equipped notebooks are generally smaller, easier on the batteries, and more versatile than their non-Centrino counterparts. This particular CPU is part of Intel's new, upgraded Pentium M lineup, featuring an amazing 2 MB of Level 2 cache for extremely fast access to recently opened files and applications. Though its overall speed is not on par with that of a high-end Intel Pentium 4 processor, this CPU will easily handle all common tasks while at the same time improving battery life.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drives, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in random access memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking, and less strain on your hard drive. The Qosmio E15-AV101 incorporates 512 MB of fast PC2700 DDR333 SDRAM memory. Though ultrademanding users may want to expand this total to the unit's boggling maximum of 2,048 MB, the stock allotment of RAM is more than enough for the vast majority of situations.

Video
CPUs are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with dedicated video memory is preferable to a controller that "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures. This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated DDR video memory. This is considered a strong notebook graphics chipset, delivering topnotch images and smooth frame rates to virtually any 2-D and most 3-D applications, including many of today's most popular 3-D games. Super-serious gamers may want to upgrade to an even more powerful 3-D card, though most users will be quite satisfied as is.

Display
You'll love the way your images look on the system's 15-inch XGA display. Featuring Toshiba's TruBrite technology for a better, brighter picture than with typical notebooks, a maximum resolution of 1,024 by 768 pixels, and extra-wide viewing angles, this display is ready for any environment and source.

Hard Disk
The Qosmio E15-AV101 features a massive 80 GB of hard disk space. This level of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for those who want to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a large library of space-gobbling music and multimedia files.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A CD-ROM drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A CD-RW drive adds CD burning, so you can also back up your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can write home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVDs, which boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs. Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-Super-Multi drive that supports all of the above in each of today's most common CD and DVD formats.

Audio
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound and two larger-than-average Harman-Kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard, several one-touch multimedia and general function keys, and a TouchPad pointing device with scroll.

Connectivity and Expansion
Whether you prefer wireless or corded connections, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is ready for anything the present or future may bring. The unit offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a standard dialup 56K data/fax modem for low-speed communication, an IntelPRO/100 VE network connection for high-speed wired networking and Internet, and integrated Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG (802.11b/g) for cordless e-communication at home, at the office, or on the road via local public hotspots. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug-and-play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, Bluetooth 1.1 technology for interaction with wireless peripherals, an i.LINK 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), futuristic S-video and component TV-out ports, and a digital audio-out (SPDIF) connection. Furthermore, all critical connections are positioned at the rear of the unit for clean lines and easy home entertainment setup.

Operating System and Software
Toshiba has fitted the Qosmio E15-AV101 with Microsoft's Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004. Similar to the standard Windows XP but with several enhancements geared to the multimedia fan, this is one of today's most advanced operating systems. Other applications include Intuit's Quicken New User Edition 2004 financial center, Microsoft's Office OneNote 2003 note-taking and management program, and several operational, multimedia, and online utilities.

Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve pounds or more, therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements." On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultraportables," super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two pounds and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. At 13.31 by 11.22 by 1.70 inches and 8.17 pounds without AC adapter, the Qosmio E15-AV101 is of average size.

Power
The unit is equipped with a six-cell lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 2.35 hours between charges. This is a shorter life expectancy than for many notebooks utilizing Intel's efficient Centrino technology, though not entirely unexpected given the system's impressive capabilities. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY TOSHIBA THROUGH WEGOTBETTERDEALS.COM
My experience with this unit echoes everything else you've read here. I made the mistake of buying this item "factory standard" refurbished, and obviously, all the company did was re-package a damaged product. The DVD player simply doesn't work and any slightly competent repairman would know that upon inserting a DVD. I ordered this unit two weeks ago, paid for it, and here it sits in my apartment, as it's now my responsibility to package it up and bring it to a UPS store. Easy shipping was half the reason I bought it online in the first place, not to mention the extra $30 it cost to have it delivered. The thing weighs 30 lbs., I don't have a car, and there's no UPS shop within a mile of my house. Basically, this is a $140 paper weight. It will be weeks before I have a TV, these guys are not being helpful, and surely, whomever buys through them next willget this defective TV/DVD unit; Don't let it be you.

Here's the response I got from Wegotbetterdeals.com when I told them the defective DVD player was coming back COD (Note the hillbilly spelling) :

Sorry. That's how it works.
