3-0 out of 5 stars Works well ... Mostly
I've had this Toshiba DVD VCR combo for well over a year.Everything is still functioning very well.I've found it very easy to setup, use and program.

The VCR part is the weakest of the system and after a few months of use it developed a VERY annoying squeak that will drive a person insane while watching or recording any tape.It doesn't always do it though, like when you bring it in for repair (of course).Luckily I use the VCR half very infrequently.

I think I paid around $80 for it, so I guess it's not too bad for a less expensive combo unit.

4-0 out of 5 stars Older Version of DVD/VCR Combo Works Great
I have had the 1st generation of this product, the SD-V280A, for over 2 years now.It is used up to 5 times a day, 7 days a week, on both the VHS & DVD sides.

The only problem I have had with it is that the DVD door doesn't open fast enough (for me anyway!).I work at a small town store that sells these units and we rarely get a complaint. The store owner refuses to carry crappy merchandise and we encourage our customers to let us know if they have a problem with anything we sell.

If there were no bugs in the 1st generation, why would there be in the next?I have no problem with any kind of tape, pre-recorded or home-made (and I have HM tapes that are over 15 years old).

I have no problem recommending Toshiba products of any kind. They offer the best warranties and customer service in the business.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for 6 months
This combo unit seemed like a good buy - stylish, functional and reasonably priced. After six months of use - mostly for childrens videos, the playback quality deteriorated - even on brand new tapes, and after several cleanings. Now, a tape will not eject, and that malfunction has caused the entire unit to shut down. So, now I have a brand new tape stuck in the slot, my kids' favorite DVD is stuck in the other drive, and we have to take it in to retrieve our media. What a pain. Now I have read the reviews here, and I realize this product is lousy.Bad choice.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money
Hi,

I purchased the Toshiba SD-V290 DVD/VCR Combo for $136.94 on
8/27/03. It is now 1/4/04.

It broke this week. Less than four months of proper use.

When I put a VHS tape into the machine it is automatically ejected. Therefore I can not play VHS tapes at this time.

When playing a DVD there are pauses throughout playback.

Now I have to deal with calling support and probably paying to send this machine in for service. Then I believe I'll be going through the following process throughout the remainder of the warranty.

First I'll return the machine to Toshiba.
Then Toshiba will repair it.
Next, Toshiba will return it to me.
Then I'll use it.
At some point it will stop working again.
Finally, I'll send it back to Toshiba for repair.
Then Toshiba will repair it...

I can see this going go on for the life of the warranty.

This adds up to a lot of time and aggravation. Stay away from this product.

I believe this machine is poorly made. Poor parts, poor quality, and poor design.

1-0 out of 5 stars Total piece of Cr*P
My VHS loading mechanism broke after only 4 months of use. I'm now trying to negotiate a return. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The 35-inch Toshiba 35AF44 FST PURE Flat direct-view CRT TV delivers a big, beautiful picture using several unique technologies to give you the best viewing experience. Toshiba's Flatter Squarer Tube (FST) significantly reduces screen curvature on the horizontal, vertical, and diagonal axis of the panel. The FST PURE Flat picture tube delivers increased viewing angles along with the enhanced picture linearity necessary to produce accurate, lifelike images. Additionally, unwanted reflections from room lighting are taken care of, and sharpness and brightness are improved.

A 3-line digital comb filter with Vertical Contour Correction virtually eliminates dot crawl or cross-color interference--producing a superior picture. While digital comb filters improve the vertical edges of images, Vertical Contour Correction works with the comb filters to improve the horizontal edges for complete image enhancement. Color temperature controls allow you to adjust white balance. The "Warm" setting reduces the color temperature to an NTSC standard 6,500 degrees Kelvin and delivers a redder image that is ideal for display in a dimly lit room. "Medium" and "Cool" provide a progressively bluer image for the best picture as room light levels are increased. The Black Level Expander increases the black threshold level, so blacks are pure black, not dark gray. This improved contrast makes the picture appear sharper and more three-dimensional.

Toshiba's Advanced VSM (velocity scan modulation) improves contrast and overall picture sharpness, while the Invar shadow mask eliminates picture discoloration (doming) caused by heat and allows the tube to operate at a higher voltage, producing brighter whites, higher contrast, and purer colors. A 16:9 mode uses vertical compression to display content formatted for a widescreen.

The 35AF44's double-baffle speaker design uses side-mounted, front-firing speakers to deliver the most stereo sound reproduction available from a television's internal speaker system. Aside from the 5-watts-per-channel stereo speaker system, the 35AF44 uses MTS for programming with stereo sound, SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language. And if you really like to be immersed in the environments on screen, the set's surround sound abilities lets you enjoy an enhanced home theater experience without connection of external speakers. The StableSound volume leveler eliminates drastic volume spikes while changing channels or when channels go to a commercial break.

The 35AF44 has plenty of inputs for connecting all your audio and video components. In back you'll find one RF, two composite, one S-video, and one ColorStream component, as well as video and audio outputs. ColorStream component video inputs split the video signal into its base components--Y (the black and white part of the picture), Pr (red minus Y), and Pb (blue minus Y). The signal remains pure and unaffected by the TV's comb filter or NTSC decoder. The result is higher resolution and improved color purity. A front composite with S-Video input makes hooking up a game console or camcorder a snap.

Many convenience features have been incorporated into the 35AF44's design. A four-item glow universal remote with DVD controls give you access to the tri-lingual (English, Spanish, French) icon on-screen display, sleep timer, noise muting, and channel return as well as basics like channel changing, volume, and picture and audio adjustments. There are also V-Chip parental control options and closed captioning when the Mute is on.

Amazon.com Product Description

Perfect for smaller spaces like an office, bedroom, or den, Toshiba's slim and stylish 20-inch 20DL74 flat-panel LCD enhanced-definition TV (EDTV) can put a lot of screen in a little space. When connected to an optional HDTV receiver, its EDTV compatibility means all video sources are converted to crisp, clear 480p, a progressive-scan format that is capable of displaying an entire frame in a single pass, with 60 full frames per second. The advantage is a reduction in flicker and a more filmlike picture quality.

A digital four-line comb filter helps eliminate dot crawl and color bleeding, enhancing fine detail, cleaning up image outlines, and removing most extraneous colors. And with LCD TVs, you never have to worry about an image burn in, so you don't have to be concerned with still images on your screen. The high 500:1 contrast ratio gives you better subtle color details and the ability to see the picture in bright light conditions. Toshiba's CT-864 remote allows for immediate access to basics like channel changing and volume as well as picture and sound adjustments and input switching. And since it glows, you can do them all in low-light conditions.

Built-in speakers (2.5 watts per channel) sit below the 4:3 aspect ratio screen, giving you full stereo sound without needing to connect to an external speaker system. News, Hall, and Theater sound modes help recreate audio environment conditions for more realistic sound reproduction. The 20DL74 also has MTS support for watching television with stereo sound, SAP for receiving a second audio track in another language, an audio leveler to prevent volume spikes during commercial breaks, and virtual surround for simulating multiple-channel soundtracks through its stereo speakers.

The 20DL74 isn't without hookups, either. In addition to a standard jack for your cable or antenna feed for use with the internal 181-channel NTSC tuner, there are two rear-panel composite-video inputs as well as a rear component jack and two S-video inputs. These are perfect for connecting a VCR, camcorder, gaming system, or DVD player, letting you quickly create a complete entertainment center. Plus, there's an A/V output. A mini stereo headphone jack is available too, in case you want to keep the sound to yourself.

At less than 4 inches deep and just 14 pounds, this flat-panel LCD TV can easily be mounted on a wall (with an optional bracket) to keep it up and out of the way. Or use the included tilt-and-swivel stand to use on a shelf or entertainment center.

Amazon.com Product Description

Ideal for the bedroom, dorm, kitchen, boat, or RV, the nine-inch AC/DC MD9DN1 delivers the quality of DVD and the convenience of a combo unit, all with Toshiba's classy silver exterior and well-designed core. Front-panel audio/video inputs accommodate hookups of a camcorder or gaming console, while a front-panel headphone jack grants listening privacy. A key on the included remote control switches between the TV and the front inputs when a gaming device is connected.

The set offers stereo sound through two front-firing, side-mounted speakers. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's coaxial digital-audio output for direct connection to an audio/video receiver.

Other DVD features include picture zoom, DVD-R, DVD-RW, and VCD playback, and a tray lock, which secures a disc in the tray through a user-selectable onscreen code. This is perfect for securing retail demonstrations, as well as for keeping children from removing a specific music or movie title.

Use the "on" timer as an alarm clock to wake up to a favorite movie, or have the set turn off automatically when viewing in the evening (up to 360 minutes in either case). Violent or sexually explicit programming can be identified and blocked using V-Chip, prohibiting viewing by young children.

5-0 out of 5 stars Happy in Ohio
Bought this item from Amazon 2 months ago at 30.00 less than they are charging now. However, it has a bright, crisp picture and the DVD works perfectly. My large Panasonic skips and misses, but this one is smooth as can be. The picture is great! I keep it on the coffee table and use it always, instead of my 27" Phillips TV. The electric bill has gone down about $20 per month because of this. I haven't used it in the car or carried it around much, but I would have confidence in doing so. The remote works well, but have to hold it up to the light sometimes to read the small lettering until you get used to where the buttons are. I would reccommend this unit highly, just because it works so well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Junky product and service
I bought this TV in Fall 2003. The DVD drawer never opened. After driving many miles to the nearest authorized service station, I waited TWO MONTHS while they searched for the right parts. Now it's February, I've returned the original product to Toshiba, and continue to wait for its replacement to be shipped to me. At every contact with customer service, I've met with sullen and unhelpful people. They do not stand behind their product. I hugely regret buying from this manufacturer and will never again buy from Toshiba. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars 3 Years and still going
I actually purchased this camera while I was vacationing in Hong Kong in early 2002.The touch screen is a nice bonus, but it has done surprisingly nice 4x6 and 8x10 prints from my Epson (Stylus740) printer without "pixelating" or grainy distortion.I am printing on Epson photo paper. The main problem I've started to have is the flash gets stuck when popping open for shooting. Not a major killer, as I've taken this camera to HI, AK, and too many parties and last minute "crazy airfare deals" to remember.I've tried the camera in all three ISO modes, got some stunning Alaska wilderness pictures in Sepia and B&W color modes, and have taken most of my shots with "High Quality" picture mode.I've had to replace the battery once so far, and have been able to get more than 300 shots on a 256MB SD card.
The outside case has held up fairly well over the years. The chrome plastic lens cover that slides out of the way has taken a minor share of scratches.I've never used the accompanying soft case for this camera, preferring to just "coat pocket it" when necessary.
Overall this has been a great lightweight, point-and-shoot camera.People are surprised to see me pressing on the screen and tweaking the settings while setting up a shot or 3 clicks to force a flash when taking sunset subject shots. It continues to serve me well even with the addition of a 12x Panasonic DMC Leica digital for close-up wildlife shots. When it comes to pictures of the family, it will definitely be the one for getting the quick shots in.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best 2 Megapixels Camera Out There!!!
This camera is just amazing! All my friend who owns 3 and 4 megapixels camera are just looking at my camera and want it. I was afraid at first of purchasing this camera because of the lack of reviews but it is just such a smart purchase. How many camera out there have TOUCH SCREEN LCD ??? This must be about the only one that has it. There is a paintbrush tool in the camera so you can take notes directly on your pictures(recorded as a different file) and you can draw whatever you want. The picture quality is very good in most circumstances. The only problem I get is red eye which I quickly eliminate using a photo editing software. The battery is amazing and can last for over 150-200 pictures before recharging. Downloading picture to computer is very easy. The sliding cover protect the lense and is pretty cool. They could improve on the start-up time but it is ok if you know how to use to camera well. I am definitely happy with my camera and I am about to take my 2000th picture with it without having a single problem yet. I don't own a case and always carry it around in my pocket because of the tiny size. I highly suggest you getting this camera, the touch screen and picture quality is just amazing!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Starter Camera
This is a good Camera if you just want point and click. No having to worry about file formats (only does jpg) and focusing .If you need to do things manualy buy another camera. The LCD is easy to use and the internal battery is nice touch since you don't have to buy batteries. The main drawback is if you forget to charge it you can't just buy batteries. The software is easy to use both on the camera and supplied for the pc. It also supports a sd card which is really nice as well. Like I said before this camera is for those of us who just want to take quick pictures when were out without much hassle.Overall I am happy because that is all I want out of a camera. Much better then buying disposables or a cheap 35mm camera.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good deal
I Got this camera last week, ...
what makes this camera distinctive is it's touch and very sharp LCD , brilliantbody design and slim size,it comes with rechargeable battery which saves batteries drain.it's very easy to operate even from first time, resolution of this camera is minimum requirement for you needs. Only movie mode is not available in it which is the only the drawback I found. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I absolutely love this TV - pure eye candy.
With a TV this nice and top of the line cables you'll start to notice all of the visual flaws in movies. At first when I started watching DVD's I was some what disappointed by a lot of the less recent (and some recent) movies because I was able to see things like the grain from the film. If a movie contains visual flaws/imperfections you'll now notice them because the picture quality on this TV is so frigg'n great.

Picture Quality:
- Excellent! With a TV whose picture quality is as good as this one you're going to want to make sure you have a very good (and new) DVD player, as well as top quality Component/HDMI cables. If you don't you'll definitely regret it. DVD players with HDMI outputs are still in their infancy, but if you can afford one I would highly suggest it. I used to think a DVD player connected via component cables were as good as it gets - until I got this TV. Since the screen is so large, and the picture quality is so high you want the highest quality cables (preferably HDMI). If you plan to use some cheap cables you bought at Radio Shack, then don't bother getting this TV.
- One annoyance I have with this TV is that the viewing angle isn't all that great in a well lit room. During the day I have to close all of the blinds in the living room to comfortably watch TV. When the room is dark the viewing angle is great, it's just when the room is bright that you might have problems.

Sound:
- The sound is excellent. I use my surround sound system for DVD's, and Toshiba's built in speakers for Cable TV. I'm able to crank the built in speakers all the way up without any loss of quality. Overall I have absolutely no complaints about the built in speakers, and thoroughly enjoy them.

Extras:
-The remote controller works fine, and has a backlight. However when the backlight is turned on it makes a very annoying 'buzzing' noise, so most of the time I leave that feature off. The flash card reader works without a problem, but it's pretty darn slow. I have a 2.1MP camera and my CompactFlash card takes a while to load onto the screen.

Conclusion:
- If you want to maximize picture quality with size and features, for a reasonable price, then get this Toshiba 57H94 TV (or a similar model) and you wont be disappointed. However, keep in mind that in order to utilize a TV as nice as this one you're definitely going to want the best cables and dvd player you can afford. It's important that you don't cheap out on those. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Toshiba's SD-P1200 is not only portable, but durable, fashioned with a rubberized, "sure grip" design made for travel. The player features a broad, 7-inch widescreen (16:9) active-matrix LCD and a built-in rechargeable battery (good for about 3.5 hours between charges). It handles DVD-Video and DVD-R playback as well as both standard and recordable CDs, including MP3 and JPEG-encoded discs. Storing over 10 hours of MP3 music per disc, you'll be able to travel lighter than ever. And with dual headphone jacks, you can watch or listen with a friend.

The SD-P1200 is serious about image quality, using a 12-bit/54 MHz video digital-to-analog conversion for maximum color purity, detail, and resolution across all 500 display lines. A handy feature called 3D virtual surround simulates surround sound effects from sources that contain only a two-channel (stereo) soundtrack.

Toshiba's JPEG Viewer lets you view digital photographs from discs made on a personal computer in the JPEG format, on any television. There's even an intuitive onscreen display to help you make customized slideshows with just a few simple clicks of the DVD player's remote control. Other features include chapter preview, high-speed smooth-motion scan in forward and reverse, repeat mode, title/chapter search, and skip forward/reverse. Headphones are not included.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great player - Pretty high pricetag for 7-inch
I had this unit for a couple of hours when I thought my Initial 1810 was going to go back to the store. I liked this unit very much. It was ultra-cool looking with it's rubberized outer skin, and the black and red theme.
It played everything I threw at it. Very surprising, given that no other Toshiba player I have heard of will play SVCDs. I tried VCD, SVCD, anamorphic DVD, full screen DVD, and widescreen DVD. Imation CDr and Sony DVD+RW worked fine.
You might not be thrilled with the aspect ratio for SVCD, though. I thought things were a little squished vertically, and I could not find a setting that would render it correctly and use the whole screen from left to right.
If this unit had an 8 inch screen for $500, then I would have returned the Initial 1810 and kept this one. In my opinion, anything under 8 inches is just too small.
This unit was obviously more solid than my Initial 1810, but it didn't seem to be worthwhile to me to pay $100 more and lose an inch of screen.

2-0 out of 5 stars Has it's downfalls
So far I have owned an RCA5400P, a Mintek 1710 and the Toshiba SD-P1200. The Mintek unfortunatly started skipping on me and I would lose the right audio channel after a while but the price tag and the accessories such as the car adapter made it a great unit. I purchased the Toshiba today and it is going right back to the store. First off the screen is horrible compared to the Mintek, it is pixilated and dark, almost as if the contrast were turned all the way up and there is no way to turn it down. Also the dvd door is very flimsy and has to be completely shut all the way for it to operate, slight movements reset the player due to a bad push pin design and you have to start the disk over again. You would think that Toshiba would be making advancements in things like shock resistance and screen quality with a $499.00 price tag and not red rubber but right now I wish I just had my quirky Mintek back. :(

1-0 out of 5 stars JUNK - Do not buy
If you have not been able to tell from all the other comments, this will no longer be a portable once the battery dies. It will die and VERY Soon after you buy this DVD player. Mine lasted two uses, it is junk and the product support is misserable.<br /><br />Buy a Sony or something else but stay away from the Toshiba Players.

1-0 out of 5 stars AC ADAPTER TO RECHARGE BATTERY IS BAD
Yea, great picture-bad sound but even worse if you can't even take it on flights or trips that depend on the battery because the AC adapter to recharge the battery is a lemon. I have had this REPLACED by Toshiba THREE TIMES! And, I am on hold YET AGAIN with Toshiba right now because-you guessed it-it won't recharge! On a positive spin-they have replaced it and are fixing it yet again! But what a whip.

3-0 out of 5 stars Plays MPEGs From ROM discs
Great picture, poor quality sound from speakers but you have to expect that from such tiny speakers. The 2 headphone outlets are convenient and work well. But here's something they don't mention in the catalog-it can play MPEG Quicktime movies from a CD-Rom or a DVD-Rom. They do tell you that is plays JPEG photos and it does. The problem with JPEG and MPEG reading is that navigating the discs using the control panel is, to put it mildly, not intuitive. Also,it is sometimes necessary to turn the unit off and then on again to get it to load commercially produced DVD's. Homemade DVD's and VCD's are sometimes playable or not depending on the MFR of the blank disc and what program recorded it. It accepts and reads w/o complaint SVCD's recorded on Roxio Toast Titanium. Also sometimes it will not load a DVD until plugged into a wall socket even though the battery low power warning is not activated. The unit is generally reliable and has never failed me though there have been the minor nuisances listed above. Like I said the picture is great even playing MPEG's from a ROM disc. And you can adjust picture brightness with the Shift-EAM button on the remote.(Not Intuitive Again) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Handheld
Over the past two years, I've used iPAQs, Jornadas, and most recently the Audiovox Maestro Pocket PC. The Toshiba e330 outperforms them all as far as I'm concerned.

First, the e330 is small, thin, and ultra light. It has the same form-factor as the e310, but with some noteworthy enhancements. Most notably, the e330 has the new 300MHz XScale Processor from Intel. Although the individual programs don't seem much affected by the increased speed, when you're using multiple programs, you can really tell a difference in performance. The e330 also has 64MB of RAM, giving you more room for programs, games, files, etc. The scroll-wheel on the upper left-hand side of the unit makes flipping through web pages and eBooks a one-handed affair. Last, but certainly not least, the e330 has the MediaQ video chip. This not only makes on-screen animation less jerky, but also makes writing on the screen appear without a lag.

I highly recommend the e330 Pocket PC from Toshiba. Five stars without question.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great buy for a great price - Love this Pocket PC
I absolutely love this Toshiba Pocket PC. I had been a Compaq IPAQ user over the past 2 years since dumping the Palm OS and thought I would be an IPAQ user forever. That is until I first saw the new Toshiba e330.

My Toshiba Pocket PC e330 has the latest Intel XScale processor running at 300MHz with 64MB of RAM, Pocket PC 2002 OS and the familiar tools like Word, Excel, Outlook and Media Player. The device also has a built-in Secure Digital (SD) media slot for additional storage space. I've used my SD card to backup my PDA as well as a holding place for my MP3. The built in Media Player makes this a great portable MP3 player.

This PDA is fast and I typically amaze people by playing full-screen video on the beautiful color screen. And the best part of the device is its incredibly thin profile and lightweight. It easily fits in your pocket and it just a great device. I highly recommend this PDA for anyone looking for an entry level device Pocket PC device as the price keeps on dropping.

1-0 out of 5 stars The worst mistake I've ever made
I purchased my pocket PC on April 2003. This is so far the worst mistake I've ever made, it crashes constantly and it looses all the information stored in file at all times. The battery life is approximately close to garbage and their customer service is terrible, far from efficient, inpolite, and quite lazy. Had I known this product was a piece of garbage, I would have never, never bought it. In fact, I don't think I will ever purchase a Toshiba product EVER AGAIN.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't buy this if you want support or SDIO
I bought the E330 because of features, form and price over the HP1910 which was a BIG mistake.

Toshiba provide no ROM support and if you want wireless you have to use Toshiba's overpriced Bluetooth card.

Here is my letter to Toshiba.

Official Complaint.
Why does the SD slot on my E330 not operate as SDIO, why is there no ROM Upgrade and why is there no product support available for my E330?

This is a relatively new machine, I only purchased it last May and yet when I contacted customer support in June about the lack of a real SDIO Toshiba already did not provide any support for it. I have contacted Customer Service several times about product support with total dissatisfaction.

In particular your product labelling and it's feature claims are designed to deceive or dupe the consumer. The box says "Built-in SD slot for additional memory and devices" and "SD slot for expandability".

If you are not going to provide support for this product then that is tantamount to duping the consumer by false advertising.

I have to soft reset the device almost every week due to unexplained lockups.

Please let me know where you would like me to send this unmerchantable product and confirm that you will provide a full refund to me. (I am serious)

Very dissatisfied customer

1-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it - buy another product
I purchased this product and if I could do it all again I would not purchase it. I have had problems with it from almost the beginning. The unit constantly crashes and looses all battery power. This has happened during syncs or while just looking at the calendar. The PDA's batty level is high. Once it was at 96%. The only way to use it again is to do a hard reset - which erases all the data and to recharge it. This has happened several times. Toshiba support is awful and not helpful. another problem I've had is that the USB power sync cable I purchased broke a pin. This wasn't a part of the warrenty and Toshiba wanted $110 to repair the product. I am very dissatisfied and will not purchase another Toshiba product. ... Read more
