Don't Buy This Product
Video Tape recording quality poor and sometimes wouldn't record at all even after cleaning the heads and buying new tapes.Warranty is useless.

Remote is poorly designed.Also, you cannot use the numeric keypad to set the time when you want to record.

Switched to the Panasonic DVD Recorder with an 80 GB hard drive and will never go back to tape.

Sexy Yes, But Only Half-Baked
WOW!At first glance, Toshiba's SV-390 seems to do it all:home theater quality audio/visual plus support for your digital camera, camcorder, DVD/CD burner, etc. []WRONG!As it turns out, the SD-390 may be incompatible with some of your favorite DVD's.

There are several types of DVD's in use today, and the SD-390 works well with most of them most of the time. But sometimes the player will choke attempting to load a disc that it does not recognize.You are less likely to see this problem with "DVD-R" discs mastered by major film studio.These almost always load on the 1st attempt, or on a 2nd attempt if necessary.The problem seems to be more common with "DVD+R" discs recorded on home DVD burners and produced cheaply by independent film studios.Many of these will never load or play in the SD-V390.

Unfortunately, neither Amazon nor Toshiba explicity mention a compatibility problem in the SV-390 marketing materials.Amazon's site specs include the "-" format and exclude the "+" format.Toshiba's site tapdances around conditional support for the "-" format while making no reference to the "+" format.You are expected to understand the subtleties and implications, "Buyer Beware"!

After enough irritating load failures, you will realize there is a problem, you may be surprised to learn that assistance is not readily available.Neither the SV-390 display panel nor the Owner's Manual do an adequate job of identifying what prevents a disc from loading.Toshiba Consumer Support will offer useless suggestions such as checking the disc, cleaning the lens, or taking an expensive trip to your authorized service center.It would cost more to diagnose and resolve the problem (if that is even possible) than to replace the unit.

Similar experiences from frustrated consumers can be found on the Internet, along with in-depth and limited-use advice from techy-guru's.Common suggestions are to download a firmware upgrade or to hack the existing firmware in your DVD device.This is better left to techy-guru's, as a firmware mishap can ruin your device.

How does a unit get to be sold, if it doesn't work?
Not knowing anything about DVD, I trusted Toshiba, cause they do have a pretty good reputation on electronic units. If I would have known a little about DVD, I would have ran,not walked, back to Best Buy and returned this. DVD's are not supposed to lose audio after you go out of pause. DVD's are supposed to read all region 1 DVDs. Simple. No ifs or maybes about it. This unit failed to read a brand new DVD. All I get is ?????|?? Write_Run_Start on the screen. and if I remove the Disk, it stays on the screen. This sounds like a bad eprom. But we will never know, cause customer service,except for Best Buy, didn't exist. 90 day warrenty. I think that said it all.
Very, very disapointing. oh, I tried the DVD on my ... computer DVD drive, it works great!

Audio failed
After 18 months the audio just stopped working due to an internal failure that was not repairable - warranty is only 1 year.

It Works, But Only A Cryptologist Would Enjoy the Menu
I got this DVD player after I tried a Samsung which choked on discs and had other problems. This Toshiba DVD player really works, delivering a crystal-clear picture and audio, is easy to set up, and plays DVDs without fuss or problem, but the interface is unnecessarily difficult to use. Press "MENU" and a bunch of tiny symbols come up which you have to laboriously arrow and toggle through using the tiny buttons on the remote control. I recommend the Toshiba 3900 DVD player instead.

Very nice picture, great player
After two years of using an Apex DVD, watching a movie on this baby is great. The picture is 10 times better, and the audio is sweet.
Another big plus (for me) is that it is very thin and doesn't take up too much space.

Supposed to play jpeg files, but . . .
I purchased this DVD player specifically because they claimed that you could copy jpg files to a CD-R and play them on your TV set through the DVD player. So far I haven't had much luck at doing this. It seems to be very finicky about what CDs it will accept or the format of the jpg image. They list only four CDs in the instruction manual that they say will work - the Kodak Picture CD, Canon QuickCD, Fujicolor CD and the Noritsu QSS CD. As a DVD player, it is mediocre, no better or worse than other DVDs in its price range - I have a another brand DVD that cost about the same but is a lot easier to use. ... Read more

Defective Product and Customer Support Stinks
First the good:
-the picture quality is good, the colors are rich.

Now the bad:
-the speakers produce distortion
-you cannot save settings associated with different inputs. This means every time you switch from one type of feed to another (watching a movie on DVD to watching regular TV via the satellite), you have to change the relevant settings. This gets to be time consuming and tiresome.

Now the unacceptable:
From the day I purchased this TV I have had sound synching problems. Sometimes the sound is off by as much as a second. My experience with Toshiba Customer support is very similar to the experience other reviewers have had: Toshiba tech support arranged for a local shop to examine the TV. They reported the problem to Toshiba and nothing has happened. I have had the TV almost two months now. Worse is, every time I call Toshiba to check the status, they cannot tell me anything, not even when they expect to repair or replace the TV.

My hoped for outcome from this will be that I will be able to return the TV and I will then purchase another brand, probably the highly rated Panasonic TH-42PA20U

Defective product--don't even think about buying!
We loved this TV for one month. Then a bright red line appeared from the top of the screen to the middle. Toshiba tech support arranged for a local shop to examine the tv. The repairmen determined that the line was from a failed circuit board. They said this "happens all the time" on Toshiba plasmas, something I never noticed in doing my due diligence on this product before I bought it. So here is a warning for anyone thinking about buying this or any other Toshiba plasma. Try another brand! By the way, since Amazon refuses to accept returns on any large tv, if you buy a lemon (like I did), you could lose thousands of dollars. You should not even consider ordering a large tv from Amazon. JUNE 11 UPDATE: after waiting 2 weeks for a service call and another 6 weeks for Toshiba to get the parts to the repair shop, the repair crew was unable to fix the problem. Toshiba now says it will send me a new set, but they can't say when this will happen. JUNE 16 UPDATE: Although Toshiba promised on June 11 to promptly replace my defective tv, today it said it had no idea when this might happen. Meanwhile, we have an unwatchable tv. For $5000, I expected customer service to be considerably better than this! Don't make the same mistake, buy any plasma tv other than a Toshiba. JULY 7 UPDATE: Finally, we have a new plasma tv and are rid of the old one. We should be glad, but we're terrified about having to deal with Toshiba's terrible customer service if the new one is defective, too.

Just got one
I have looked at all the HDTV Plasma in 42". This is the best model out there. The picture looks crystal clear, the colors look natural, and the image is very bright. J&R has this model next to the more expensive Sony Wega Plasma. If you have seen those two TV's side-by-side, you wouldn't pay $1000 more for the Sony Wega model. ... Read more

Not to bad
First got this and was really dissapointed.This repalced a 27" Sony Wega - non HDTV.Watchung tv, and dvd's with a progressive scan dvd player, well, the Sony was just as good or better with the picture. I then ordered HD through my local cable company. WHAT'S WITH THE COOLING FAN??
This unit is unusable in a bedroom because of an unbelievably loud cooling fan. The fan never shuts off, even when the machine is turned off; you have to unplug it to silence it! I'm of the opinion that Home Theater components should be silent, but this has a fan as loud as the fan on my desktop PC.Really poor, arrogant engineering.

The picture and features are fine, lots of connection options, easy to set up. I got it to work right out of the box. The machine is slow to acquire the programming guide, but they've done a good job with the guide itself.The remote also has channel and volume buttons that are too small and the RF doesn't work, it's basically only a line of sight IR.

Bottom line, if you use it in a media room, in a closed case (with a glass front, RF doesn't work) and you can get it for <$400, it might be a buy, but not for your bedroom. ... Read more

Decent price, decent pictures
I bought this camera in early 2002. Pictures are great for the computer viewing and e-mailing. Program that comes with it is easy to use to download pictures. Picture quality when you get prints done from a photo store aren't very clear unless you always use full size and quality for every picture you plan to get on prints. Even then they have a slight "fuzz" to them. When I bought this camera it was 3 times the price, but it has just now started having problems with picture taking 2 years later. At this current price you can't beat what it can give you. Has lots of options so you can mess with the pictures you take as if you had a regular SLR type of camera. Great for the "point and shoot" type also.

Best bang for the buck !!
This has all the high-end features one needs (including video) in order to capture all the pictures you will need. 6x zoom works very well and the 3.2 ixels at this price are just a steal! Be sure to use the right rechargable batteries (not the cheap ones at Wal-mart, but get yourself eight 8 1800 mAh or higher "AA" batteries. I laso recommend the ac20 power supply if you do alot of desktop work or video through it!

Good Value
I have several digital cameras but I like this one the best. It has never failed to focus reliably and the shots are quite sharp.
Controls are easy to learn and use.

I think you will hard pressed to find another or better value for the money

Great sharp outdoor pics, full manual except for focus
I'll start with some of the negative aspects of this camera. It has no AF illuminator lamp which is a little light that is used to help focusing in dark situations. Now its focusing performance is reasonable but will not be as dependable as say the Sony or Canon cameras that have this feature standard. The bundle it comes with is very average . . this includes a dinky 8MB SD card and is only saved by the inclusion of a carrying pouch and remote control. You also have to purchase a rechargeable battery kit as only 4AA alkalines are included. This camera is made in China so the plastic feels a little coarse and the words are painted on. It does feel solid though. The LCD is bright and very useable outdoors but the pixel count is a little low, meaning you will not be able to determine if things are in focus and some detail is lost, but you should be able to roughly figure out if the exposure is right.
Now for the good. This camera takes very nice, very sharp outdoor pictures. To get great shots I had to change two of the default settings out of the box. I changed the color to VIVID and the ISO to 100 (default is 200). When the color is set to NORMAL things look slightly under saturated. The good thing is that these settings will be saved even if you turn off the camera. This is great cause I have some settings saved in automatic mode (for general point & shoot) and I have other settings saved in manual mode for indoor shots or shadowy situations which are typically under exposed by most cameras automatic mode. I believe outdoor shots on this look sharper and overall slightly more pleasing than on the Sony DSCP72 or the Canon A70. However in darker situations the Toshiba reveals a bit more noise. The Canon and Sony give smoother shadows with less noise in the dark (probably because of their noise reduction system and/or processing). The pictures on the Sony and Canon appear little softer however. A major part of the reason this Toshiba takes such nice pictures is bacause it uses a Canon made lens. Now if you like to play with settings or would like to learn more about photography then you have the option of a wide range of manual controls (full aperature and shutter speed control) along with settings for sharpness, color and contrast. Manual focus is however only limited to a few presets. Ease of use is where things get exceptional. Very easy to use and you can very quickly change settings with the mode dial and 'hat switch'. No need to press menu buttons during photography as the hat switch controls all major functions. This means your thumb is the only thing you need to quickly cycle through settings like focusing, shutter speed, aperature etc. I was very pleased with the Canon A70 and it was my primary target but I managed to get this camera at a much lower price. Of course everything is relative to the price you pay and for the price I paid this is a very good value. Happy hunting.

*** Exciting update: There are hidden manual focus and manual white balance functions. For manual focus just press and hold the 'down' button in the menu with focus options until 'MF' appears and then select it. To manually focus press and hold the 'disp' button and use the zoom controls to focus. For manual white balance do the same in the WB menu until 'Pre Set' appears and then select it. Point the camera at your reference white color (paper etc.) press the shutter button and then select 'ok'. You can also disable the power off timer by holding down 'Disp' while turning on the camera.

Good but could have been better
Despite my list of complaints, I'm not disappointed with this camera.

Things I liked.
1. Zoom. It's good. Opticial zoom is great. Digital zoom starts pixelating but far less than other cameras I've played with. You can't see the pixelation if you don't zoom in further on your computer.
2. Manual controls. I appreciate the aperature priority, shutter priority, full manual, burst, etc. options.
3. Batteries: I'm glad it takes normal batteries, I can buy more if I out of power.
4. Has both viewfinder and LCD (which you can turn off if you want)

There are a few complaints/things I don't like about this camera:
1. Lack of AF (Autofocus) helper light. I've played with lots of friends' camera and they all have this little built in light (little flashlight) that helps the camera autofocus in dim or dark conditions. This camera doesn't. I've experimented and, sure enough, if I point a little flashlight at the center of the image, even in the dark the camera can focus. But the by itself the camera has a hard time focusing even if it's not that dark.
2. Manually focusing is only limited to the follwing options: macro, 1m, 3m, infinity.
3. It seems to cause redeye easily. It has a redeye reduction flash option and it does reduce the redeye but it's still there.
4. You have to buy a larger memory card. You have to buy rechargeable battery kit (it uses 4 AA). It says in the manual the included batteries are for testing only.
5. I didn't really like the pc software. Windows xp will automatically recognize the camera and you can use any software you want with for playing with pictures. No stiching/panorama software.
6. Movie mode is not really special. No microphone.
7. A little bigger than I thought it would be (Room probably needed for the 4 AA batteries).
8. LCD: If you're out of focus or over/underexposed, the LCD will not show this to you.

Not long ago, we would have considered Toshiba's SD-2200 a steal. After all, this DVD player performs flawlessly when it comes to audio-video processing, resulting in good picture quality and dynamite sound. The SD-2200 also has dual-disc capacity, includes a built-in Dolby Digital decoder, and plays High Definition Compatible Discs (HDCDs). However, other manufacturers have caught up to Toshiba's lead in the DVD player arena, producing players of equal quality and reducing the SD-2200 to a good value rather than a steal.

Toshiba has taken a step backwards in the SD-2200's design by offering a joystick-style remote control that inhibits your ability to easily access menus and perform setup functions.

If the presence of a built-in Dolby Digital decoder appeals to you, however, the SD-2200 is worth its weight. In addition to offering 5.1-channel audio jacks, it has optical and coaxial digital-audio outputs, as well as composite-, component-, and S-video outputs.

The front array of buttons and LEDs center around the disc tray, which loads a single disc at a time. We found the tray mechanism to be somewhat flimsy and prone to breakage. The automated mechanism also makes a disturbing humming noise for several seconds as it goes through its motions.

A pair of open/close buttons--labeled 1 and 2--are on the right of the disc tray. (Curiously, there are no matching open/close disc buttons on the remote control.) A pair of LEDs flanks the left side of the disc tray. With two DVDs in the machine, a red LED indicates that the first disc is in standby or play mode, while a green LED shows that a second disc is "on deck." Combined with the red power indicator, we found these lights distracting in our darkened home theater. Given the fact that the SD-2200 has a front-panel display-off switch, it seems counterproductive for Toshiba to include three brightly colored LEDs.

Other front-panel operating buttons include play, pause, stop, skip, and a redundant disc select button. Unfortunately, there is no menu access button in case the remote is lost or rendered inoperable. We also wished this unit had a headphone jack.

The onscreen setup display is identical to other Toshiba models. A button on the remote brings up a bar at the top of the display device that hosts icons for language, picture, audio, display, and operation. Although all of these setup functions are intuitive, the remote makes it difficult to easily access them.

The remote's "joystick" is actually a small toggle button that's designed to replace the standard up/down and left/right arrow buttons on most remotes. The toggle switch is overly sensitive and, when you are moving inside a given menu, it tends to move on to the next icon or accidentally select the wrong setting. For example, in picture setup, each time we attempted to select the 16:9 aspect ratio, we inadvertently moved over to the audio menu without completing our mission.

Fortunately, once we completed all our menu selections and dimmed the lights, the SD-2200 exhibited the usual high-quality sound and image we've come to expect from Toshiba. One of Toshiba's best selling points is the company's unwavering focus on accurate gray-scale levels. The company adheres to the philosophy that faithful colors begin with a video decoder's ability to produce true black and the SD-2200's image quality shows this philosophy. Dark scenes were well defined instead of murky, while bright scenes showed off the player's ability to offer good edge definition, resulting in a more three-dimensional image. We were also pleased to see that the SD-2200 showed no digital artifacts during problematic action sequences with high data compression. Plus, we loved the onscreen meter, which allows you to monitor the bit-rate allocation for a given scene.

Few manufacturers compare to Toshiba when it comes to offering superb digital-to-analog audio converters. With the SD-2200, explosions punched through the air with high velocity, while ambient sound effects trickled across the room with an eerie realism. Of course, there are many factors that contribute to a home theater system's ability to immerse the audience in a bug-infested jungle setting or to plop them down in the crowded streets of New York City. However, we have found that DVD players with inferior audio components invariably fail in this regard. Unlike lesser models, Toshiba's SD-2200 brought out the best in our test system.

The SD-2200 scored high on music reproduction as well. On well-recorded, standard CDs, the SD-2200 reinforced the notion that a good DVD player is more than capable of doubling up for music listening. Dynamic range--the ability to reproduce the highest highs and the lowest lows--was clear and relatively distortion free. On High Definition Compatible Discs, the SD-2200 kicked into cruise control and delivered satisfying renditions of everything from grunge guitar to slow sax.

If you're impartial about HDCDs and you already have a home theater system with Dolby Digital 5.1-channel processing, Toshiba's SD-2200 probably isn't a practical choice for a DVD player. After all, there are less expensive, single-disc players without built-in decoders, as well as higher-priced machines with more features and better build quality. If you want a DVD player that's well equipped for today's audio-video formats and does all the important things right, however, the SD-2200 is a good choice. --Eric Gill

Fantastic DVD Player
Great Picture, Crystal Clear. Extremely Quiet! Comes with Dolby 5.1 Decoder built in. Also includes Spatializer Virtual Surround Sound. I have hooked up the Dolby 5.1 & have tryed the Spatializer Surround Sound through my Stereo TV speakers. Was Extremely Impressive! Will also play CD RW a nice bonus. I am updating this review. It is now Dec.16 2002 and this unit still works like new. You cannot buy a better DVD player than this one. Has double DVD trays for movies that have two disks...I bought this one at [a]Clearance Auction ... Made in Japan (Very Good Quality!). I rate this unit at 5 Stars and Highly Recommend it to everyone young and old alike! Looks & Feels like a Quality piece of Audio/Video Equipment! Get Yours Now.. prefer the made in Japan version if you can still get one, quality is definately better.

High quality player
After receiving this DVD player, I was able to set it up and start watching movies in less than five minutes. The picture is excellent, comparable to DVD players that cost hundreds more. The remote takes some getting used to, but is actually quite functional and logical in its setup. The value gets even better when you realize that it supports DTS audio as well. And to those who complain about the lack of an eject button on the remote, it's because if you have an entertainment center like I do, you probably don't want the tray banging against the glass when it comes out of the player. The fact is this player is easy to use, produces great audio and video, and is priced well to match. If you want a good high-end DVD player, the 2200 does the trick in every aspect. Gotta go now, finding more DVD's to watch this weekend!

I AM NOT GOING INTO ALL OF THE SPECIFICS, BUT OUT OF 9 DVD PLAYERS I OWN, THIS IS MY FAVORITE----THOSE ANNOYING LETTERBOX MOVIES ZOOM INTO STANDARD AT ONE CLICK WITH VERY EQUAL BALANCING ON THE CUTOFF SO THAT IT LOOKS LIKE A STANDARD MOVIE, YOU DO NOT MISS ANYTHING...IT PLAYED ALL OF MY DVD-R'S AND MY SVCD'S...I WOULD NOT TRADE IT FOR ANYTHING, IN FACT I MAY BUY ANOTHER.

IT DOES PLAY BURNED CDS
i have had this player for a while now and i've loved it since day one. when i first got it, i was disappointed to find out that it did not play burned cds...but i later found out that it does play burned Cds as long as they are CD-RW. i was reading at a CDR faq and this is what they said.."CD-RW discs have a different formulation, and may work even on players that can't handle CD-R media. If CD-R media doesn't work, try copying the disc to CD-RW instead" i tried it and it works. i can even erase the CD-RW disc and burn the same disc again with different music..because of this, i enjoy my player even more
