Nifty!
This mouse is a must-have for anyone who uses a laptop and doesn't like using the touchpad.

The mouse is smaller than the desktop version, but it's performance and comfort rivals a full size wireless mouse.It has an on/off switch on the underside that saves battery life, and it comes with a black travel case that stows easily for travel.

I highly recommend this mouse.

I can't live without mine
I've been using this portable mouse for nearly a year and love it.As I'm frequently travelling, I use the mouse about 30 hours a week.A little neoprene pouch is included, which even has a pocket for the USB receiver.Installation is painless under Windows XP.The mouse has a power switch to save batteries when not in use.

The one negative is a technical issue.An error message is generated when the laptop tries to hibernate.Fortunately, there is a simple workaround.Disable "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" option under the Device Manager.

Must have for notebooks
Highly recommended for laptops. Even though it has a "connect" button, never had to use it. Just plug and play installation. No need to download/install drivers. Used it with Win 2000 and Win XP.

Hard click
I love the red color, which is the main reason I ordered it. The click is a little hard and at first thought nothing of it.
Carpal tunnel was probably on the way, but I think the hard click made it come faster. The performance is great however. But If you have carpal tunnel or arthritis or some other nasty aging disease, don't get this one. It tires out my arm when using it a lot, which is pretty necessary when working a computer.

Left button is stiffer than the right one
I used this mouse for two days, overall it is pretty good: the color, the size, the weight, the wireless signal, and software.

Two issues:
1. The left button is stiffer than the rigth one. I don't know if it is common, but I saw other people bought the silver version mentioned this too, so it should be a design or manufacture issue. I don't know if I should return it, but I decided to give it some other days for trying, hoping that it will get softer after one or two weeks.

2. If you have already Logitech mouseware installed, it will recognize it as a MX500 wireless mouse, and you cannot configure it. You have to reinstall the software and then it will update the system and find the right mouse.

Impressed with Averatec
First and foremost, I too was hesitant about buying this laptop given it's mixed ratings. I'm pretty tech savy, so I do my research and I make sure I'm getting a good product before I buy ANY PC. So after reading reviews, I took the plunge, and I myself became a skeptic; the one I took home from a local store had a keyboard that was messed up, typing two characters for each key (talk about weird typing).

However, since buying mine about a month ago, I've been pleased with it's results. I've given serious thought to this review, and will try and point out all the good, and the bad. In a nutshell, you really need to think about WHAT you want to do with your labtop PC before you buy this computer. First let's look at the basics.

First, if you're looking for long battery life, this isn't the one for you. In fact, if battery life is very important to you, just spend the extra cash for one with Intel's Centrino Mobile Technology (you can't beat them for battery power). Averatec's PC will give you about 2.5 hours of battery life on this model (why they say 3 is beyond me). For most people doing typing, spreadsheet work, scanning, etc that's going to be enough. You could always buy a second battery too (they aren't THAT much.) It makes a good PC for Office, Library, Class, Home, etc work. If you're looking to run DVD's all the time, or constantly stay on the Wireless network, then you're not going to get good battery life. It's the ideal PC for a student in my opinion for class; especially given it's small size. The wireless network is also great, and it's easy to cut on and off (button right on the top)... so you can save battery life easily.

The next factor is Size. This labtop is one of the best money can buy for it's size and weight. That's one of the main reasons I looked at it, and purchased it. Sony's smaller labtops cost an arm and a leg, and just aren't worth it. If you need a small, compact PC, Averatec is for you. It's a powerful little PC with a lot built in... again, just consider how much battery life you need. I use mine mostly for work at the University and Documentation stuff. I also will use it for business when I travel for photo's, etc. So to me, this is ideal.

Next thing, like others have said, the keyboard may take some getting used to. But it's a trade for the small size, so I can't complain. It hasn't been a huge annoyance for me; nothing as bad as some make it sound anyway. My main complaint was the same as another reviewer; that the Control key (Ctrl) has been replaced with the Function key and is now situated to the right of this Function key. It can be annoying at times. Other than that, no problems honestly.

Another thing is how the PC can heat up. While I don't personally care how much it heats up, if you do, then you might want to avoid the PC. I've been surprised how heated it gets. Again, if you're using this thing on a desk, no problem. If it's sitting in your lab, just use a book; otherwise avoid the PC... it can get rather warm.

The last thing that I can think about is the Speakers and Sound. This is NOT a PC for good sound quality, it just sounds flat. Again, if you're using this for an Office/Classroom PC, that's not an issue.

One thing I love about Averatec's PC is the three USB ports on the front side on the right. While the location is a bit weird, it's great having them for flash cards, scanner, a mouse, etc.

The PC can also support great monitor resolution... another perk if you're using it in an Office setting with a larger monitor.

Another downside is the fact it lacks a normal Printer cable connection. Most printers use USB now anyway, but it still would be nice to have it at times.

I'll close out with one last thing. Performance wise I'm very impressed. I really pushed my labtop hard to see how much I could get it to run at the same time, and it did very well. I used heavy photo programs, Macromedia Flash, GIS software, etc all at once to test it; not bad if I may say so myself, and I'm very picky about speed. It was one of the reasons I was hesitant to buy it, but AMD has impressed me again here. I also loved the wireless network feature... it's great and I can go anywhere in my house now and surf the net, access files on my desktop PC's, etc. It's great! A lot of University's are building these wireless networks into their campuses now, which makes it even better for the student.

Finally, here's two tips I'd offer:

Calibrate the Battery. You can find the manual for this PC on Averatec's website, or in the "My Documents" folder of your labtop. It takes a loooong time to calibrate, but it's a good way to keep your battery alive longer.

Speaking of calibration, make sure you also calibrate the fan. It's easy to do, just follow the manual as before and it'll help keep the fan quite more.

Overall, I love this PC. I wouldn't trade it back for another one and have no regrets on buying it. It's not perfect by any means, but for the price, size, weight, and performance, you really cannot beat it. It had PC Mags Editor's Choice award for a reason. I too have found it impressive.

If you buy it locally, get the extended warranty. It's always smart to do this with a PC. I did, and I think it'll be worth it if something goes wrong.

Very Pleased
I've had it for about a week now and I'm very pleased. It's small and light and best of all, half the price of a Sony! I've seen both good and bad reviews for this item so I was hesitant to buy one. The construction seems good and it feels nice and solid. The keyboard layout is a little odd, but I'll get used to it. I wish they could remove those stupid "Windows" keys and make the space bar a bit wider. I plugged it into a desktop monitor and was surprised to see it supported up to 1600 x 1200 resolution... and that was just in 32MB video mode.

Pros:
- The price.
- Small and light, a notebook that is actually the size of a notebook!
- Performance, no complaints here! 512MB RAM, 40GB HD, 64MB video, and fast enough for anything I'm likely to do with it.
- DVD+CD-RW combo.

Cons:
- The USB ports could be in a better spot. It makes using a mouse difficult at times.
- The battery life isn't is good as I'd hoped.
- A little on the noise side.
- The speakers aren't very loud, especially with DVDs.

Finally a light, inexpensive laptop
I was tired of lugging heavy laptops around; to work, on trips. I didn't wnat to pay $2000+ for a 512 MB laptop. The IBM is light but expensive and you don't even get an optical drive. This laptop has a DVD/CD-burner built-in. This Averatec has been a value purchase. I took it with me to Macedonia on a Northwest Medical Team mission and was able to download digital pictures and recordings then select and burn mini-cds to give to our hosts.

The battery does not last 3 1/2 hours; more like a little over 2. It's a small negative when you literally save $1000.

It works great for me!
I think that this is the best notebook for the money. If you are looking for the basics...this is it! I was a little afraid of the name brand, but it's been great! It's fast and it works great for me! The built in wireless LAN is fantastic. My only gripe is that the battery does not last 3+ hours like it says on the label. I find that it lasts on average of 2 hrs and 45 mins at best. It has to be good...my daughter snags it whenever she can...we are pretty tough critics. Save your money and buy this one.

The only one I carry now!
I bought this machine to replace my Toshiba with something a little lighter as I also carry an iBook (need Unix for work) This gem has eclipsed the iBook as well as I have it dual booting Debian linux and windows XP. The battery life is a bit short (2 hours) but more batteries are reasonable.

The keyboard is well designed, something hard to find on a low-cost small machine.

If the Swiss made mice, they'd have this kind of movement
I have bought an insane number of pointing devices. I'm not sure why that is, exactly, but I'm sure that therapy will probably be needed to unravel the mystery. The practical upshot, however, is that I've owned and/or tested just about everything that's come on the market in the past few years--and this little device is right at the top of the list.

I find it to be far superior to its Microsoft competitor, which seems to be less fluid in its movements. Often, I've had to pick up the Microsoft Optical mouse from the desktop surface in order to "reset" it. Plus, when doing detailed graphical work, the Microsoft's tendency to randomly jump a few pixels is really annoying. Maybe my particular Microsoft mouse is a slight lemon, and in fact there's nothing generally wrong with the device, but for whatever reasons, I've had much fewer problems with this Logitech version. It's easily the most fluid, responsive pointing device I've ever used--outside of a graphics tablet.

I am baffled, somewhat, by other reviews which comment on it's less-than ergonomic design, or its appropriateness for small hands only. After all, an "ergonomic" mouse almost certainly means a mouse that is designed for right-handed users. This more egalitarian design can be used by hands of all persuasions.

Nor do I notice any unusually "cheap" clicking sound when I press the mouse buttons. It is certainly slightly louder than other mice I've owned, but it's hardly a sound connoting bad construction.

About the only problem I've encountered with the device, in fact, has to do with the controlling software. If you're buying this as a replacement for a Logitech device already installed on your machine, you do have to take care to uninstall all that old software before proceeding. I found that one game I play got really confused when I just installed the new Logitech MouseWare over the top of what was already there. All the problems cleared up, however, when I manually uninstalled all Logitech MouseWare and then did a fresh install.

Having said all this, and recognizing that the cord provided is a fair bit longer than most mice provide, I am intrigued by the future availability of a cordless version. I have a cordless Logitech roller ball mouse, and like the freedom it offers. If Logitech manages to pull off the same fluidity with the cordless version that they have with this one, it will be very hard to continue to prefer this one.

In the here and now, however, I really doubt you'll find a better, more precise mousing experience than the Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical.

Ergonomic, Smooth, and Loaded!
I bought the Logitech Wheel Mouse Optical as a replacement for my factory eMachines mouse. It must be the most ergonomic mouse I have ever used. I love it. I have not had a single problem with it even though it is hooked up through my USB Hub. The included software is also handy, although I have disabled it. It comes with Logitech's MouseWare which features WebWheel. WebWheel, when the center button is pressed down, opens a browser type function that allows you to go back, reload the page, or stop the page loading and a couple of other web links. If you don't like that or don't browse the web often, then you can set it to open a little box with windows program functions such as close program, minimize, and more. However, because I get many long emails, I have set it to the default windows provided alternative which allows you to move your pointed to control the scrollbars.

The plug and play option is also fabulous. Win98, WinME, and WinXP recognized it instantly through the USB port and let me use scroll features without any added software. The device also worked wonderfully with the Macintosh. I tested it on an iBook with Mac OS-9 and Mac OS-X and it worked instantly without any additional software. OS-X even let me use the scrolling feature on webpages and let me right click just like Windows. I highly suggest this mouse for ANYONE! If you don't have USB then there is an included PS/2 adapter.

Best mouse I ever used
I'm reading a lot of reviews that mention skipping or lag, and I can't imagine what's wrong, except to guess perhaps they are using the mouse on an inappropriate surface, perhaps very shiny?

I've owned three of these, for my PC, for my Powerbook and for an ex's PC. I also happen to be lucky enough to have one at work and all 3 of mine plus the 4th have always performed perfectly. No need to install the software at all on a Mac, and mor than accurate enough. As a gamer and a graphic designer I've had no problems with speed or accuracy, the buttons are responsive and natural and the wheel works great.

It's not "ergonomic" but I've found it more comfortable than my old MS Optical which was, and more reliable too. I'll never use a different mouse if I can avoid it, unless Logictech somehow improves on this one.

I KEEP RIGHT-CLICKING
The mouse works very well and would definitely be worth the money EXCEPT FOR ONE PROBLEM: the buttons on this mouse seem unusually sensitive or something, because I keep involuntarily hitting right when I don't want to. I don't recall ever having this problem with other mouses. It's possible that me accidentally hitting right click constantly is entirely the fault of my hand and not the mouse, but as I said, I've never had this problem with other mouses. Perhaps it'll take some more getting used to.

it works fine...
I was still on version 2001 when I received an email notice from quicken saying they were discontinuing support for this version, including the download of quotes to my portfolio.

I was rather upset by that, as Q 2001 worked perfectly for me... and also rather impressed. I will suggest this method to my company, i.e. tell to client they have to upgrade version of our applications, because soon we won't send data any more to old versions... that's a very good business model... for the seller anyway.

Having read all the negative reviews about Q 2005, I was a bit anxious when I did the upgrade... But Everything worked fine... the new version managed to import without any problems all the data from Q 2001.. Having move from 2001 to 2005 in one jump, I found that the user interface is drastically better... I like the possibility to call the report directly from the toolbar. and also to rename/aggregate easily vendor names into a single name, as I am using a few online vendors which keep changing their denominations/names...

All in all, a very good product...So far, the only thing missing is the lack of capacity for donwloading/accessing quote/historical price for non US stocks.

Quicken & Quicken support have gone down hill
Quicken used to be an easy product to use but over the last few years each successive upgrade has become more user unfriendly.Methods of entry are changed without notice and with little or no help support.The product is becoming more oriented to Intuit's online businesses and basic, simple features are disappearing.Menus and online pages offer to sell you more Intuit services.

Year-over-year updates delete or change features and leave it to you to figure out what they have done.User support is inadequate and confusing.They even go so far as to label self-serving product changes (capability deletions) as enhancements.A good example is the removal of the QIF format import/export capability for investment data without providing a comparable capability.This results in the loss of an ability to transfer or merge investment transactions.Quicken says that using a QIF file was a "poor customer experience".They changed the product to only use a format that works with their online download despite the fact that it also deleted the ability to move transactions about on your PC. It appears their "poor experience" with having a feature with some cross-product capability was traded for a "feature" that limits you to Quicken at the expense of leaving you a "no capability experience".

Detailed documentation, particularly of changes, is lacking.Online chat user support is limited; personnel are untrained on items and recommend that you call for live telephone help.You quickly find out that live telephone "support" is a profit center at $24.95 a call.Paying them $24.95 to explain that they deleted a useful feature because they didn't think it was needed is a typical Quicken experience.

Every release worse than the last.
I've been a Quicken user from day one.Prior to 2002, I used to upgrade virtually every year.I've done this reluctantly because with each upgrade, some feature or report I use frequently gets axed in the new and improved version.In the last 4 years I've returned two releases (2003 and 2004) because of my disgust with Intuit's penchant for making the program more difficult for me to use.I read most of the reviews posted for Premier 2005 and agree with the consensus that Intuit just can't seem to get it right.

All Intuit seems to have done in the last 4 or 5 releases is to change the look and feel of the software at the expense of ease of use.There's nothing materially "better" in this release but entering investment transactions became a downright pain in the behind.

examples:
Can't cut and paste inside the check writing window (admittedly, not a frequently used feature, but gone).

Stock transactions now pop up a much less user friendly entry window.The older 2002 version of register based entry was much easier to use.

Want to reconcile that brokerage account?You really gotta hunt for this command.Why, for Pete's sake, isn't there a command, button or icon anywhere on the window with the register?

Done reconciling and want to check the account value for the date of your statement?In 2002, you were sent to the portfolio view after reconciling with the "As of" date of the view set to the statement date you used in the reconcile.Not anymore.Now you are sent back to the TOP OF the register.Were you needing to enter another transaction, you would have to scroll down to the bottom.So, you click to the Summary Page instead.This displays the current date in the "As of" the Holdings window.You must change the date to go to your statement date.Also, the Holdings window in the Summary Page is annoyingly small and won't allow you to expand it, forcing you to go back to the Portfoio Window anyway to easily see what you need to see.

I'm so heavily entrenched into Quicken that I'm stuck (Money tells me if finds conversion errors - but won't specify what they are).I will have to live with 2005, but would have stayed with 2002 to keep the simplified register based entry for stock transactions.

I could go on and on but you'll see enough complaints posted here.

Prior to 2002 I bought the upgrades every year.Now, I'll stick it out for as many years as possible to prevent further erosion of features I've grown accustomed to.

If you're a casual user and only need to cut checks, get the basic version - or try MS Money.If you're a power user, hold off until the tone of these reviews improves.

Caveat Emptor

Upgraded from Quicken 2002 Deluxe
Since online banking updates were no longer going to be supported past mid-April 2005, even the loyal Quicken customers had to upgrade to the latest version.I can understand it in my case.I needed to upgrade.I upgraded directly from Intuit and supposedly got $20 off (for current customers).All I know is I paid the same price everyone is buying it for here on Amazon.

I've been using Quicken since it's original days in DOS.I have been completely satisfied with the program all these years.The new 2005 interface will take some getting used to, but so far I like it.It was a painless upgrade of my data files from 2002 to 2003, then to 2005 data file version.I have about 10mb in data files and it works flawlessly.I refuse to do a "year-end" each year and start with a new data file.

If you're on the 2003 or 2004 version, I would not recommend upgrading yet.If you are on 2002 or earlier, you'll have to upgrade by mid-April 2005 if you want to continue using account downloads via the Internet directly into Quicken.This is something that I could not live without, so here I am running Quicken 2005 Premiere.

A very flawed product--DO NOT BUY!!!
I had been a very happy camper with Quicken for many years...until Intuit forced the upgrade to the 2005 version.What used to work flawlessly (Quicken 2002)in terms of bank and stock data downloads now would not work.Four calls to the support line got nowhere, with much fumbling around about Quicken not working well on networks, having problems with firewalls and on and on...no solutions.I finally had to just demand a refund and will now spend the money on MS Money...at least one should expect that to work with Windows XP.I guess Intuit has just gotten too greedy and/or too big...beware... ... Justified Upgrade for some, but not all
Word 2003 is more powerful than ever.Unfortunately, most of the new features are aimed primarily towards large business.As a result, many end-users simply won't need them (or be able to use them).The users who will benefit most from upgrading are corporate users or users purchasing bundles with new PCs.

Pros:

Instant Messaging support is now integrated with Office applications.However, only MSN messenger is used.Users who predominantly use Yahoo, trillian, jabber, or ICQ will not find any utility in this feature, without signing up for a messenger account.

The user interface has changed for the better, and matches the Windows XP interface better.Personally, I like it.Also, fonts are rendered better, and consequently documents will look better on laptops (no more jagged edges).

The Reading Layout feature splits the text into a two column format for easier reading (think newspaper).

If you have Microsoft Server and SharePoint services installed on your network, you can share and track changes to word documents.Nice feature, but requires a significant investment on server software.

When typing an hypertext link, word no longer reformats the font of the URL.

Cons:

Product activation, which requires network access.

All of the Office applications now have a blended help system that first checks help files online first, before getting local help files.

XML is useless for end users.Programmers who use Word to write XML will find that Word no longer tries to autocorrect much of the XML, but you will still have the annoying red underline on many of your XML tags because the spellchecker flags them as misspelled.

Still, I think it makes a worthy upgrade for 97/2000 users, but XP users will find the expense difficult to justify.More specifically, if you are an end user without a lot of Microsoft back end software installed on your network (Windows 2000/2003 Server, SharePoint services, etc.) I would think very carefully before upgrading. ... Absolutely COOL!
I am totally loving this little thing! Very slick design with those blue lights and the ability to put 4 different USB devices all into one super-mini hub. A must have for this price...

Great, compact usb hub for mobile or desktop users!
This is an excellent usb hub for the price. Very compact and very light. It doesn't take up too much space at all. Also, it's powered thru USB so you do not need to deal with an AC adaptor.

I have a couple of USB devices that are powered through the USB port as well and my concern was whether they would still be active through this hub. I plugged both into the hub and both were powered up!!

And the 4 ports light up with a nice blue led color that's looks really cool!! Targus should show this in their ads/marketing material because it definitely makes the hub look much cooler!

This is a great bargain and perfect for people that need a simple & compact USB hub for all their gadgets.

Definitely recommended!!

Does exactly what it is supposed to, at a good price
I chose this just because I wanted something cheap. I have heard bad things about some other brands overheating or having various problems, but I have been using this a few months and found no problems whatsoever.

It remains room temperature and has had no bandwidth or power problems for me. It appears to have a place to connect a power supply (not included), but that doesn't seem to be listed as a feature so I cannot guarantee it. It has two USB plugs so you can get the power from a second USB port if you need it. I have only needed one. My only complaint with the device is having that extra plug sitting around (attached to the cord), but of course that isn't a problem if you use it.

It's cheap and it works, so I recommend this item.

Great Device
This is a great product at a great price. I bought one of these for my laptop to add to the number of USB ports available. I liked it so much, I bought another for my desktop to simply make the ports more accessible. The supplied cord is plenty long to reach the desktop on the floor and then I simply Velcro'ed the Targus to my desk to make plugging and unplugging USB devices much more convenient. The Targus works right out of the box, no install required and it works on every computer I've tried -- no problems. I must confess, the blue LED's look pretty cool too!

I just got this item after reading just some of the confusing reviews and other positive ones.

It was inexpensive and worth the buy.

Upon getting it I unplugged by Logitech webcam and plugged in the targus. I then plugged in mouse, digi camer and webcam and it worked as smooth as silk. It is most recommended!

Linksys SD205
This Linksys SD205 switch rules. First, its mesmerizing because its the same size as the Ipod. Second, it does what its advertised such as connecting other computers together and most importantly, it regenerates signal. I was seriously considering buying a repeater, but they cost a couple hundred dollars. Technically, a hub is supposed to do the same thing but who wants that passive crap. The signal in my network started to attenuate and needed regeneration. This badboy fixed it and its back to full strength. These speakers are well made for certain areas
I purchased these speaker at walmart for 20$ they sound decent depending on what you want you want to use them for. There not made to be loud although they can sound fairly loud when playing music or dvds, or even games. When you turn the speakers up all the way they tend to make a type of rattling sound/buzzing sound. So if your wanting loud speakers dont buy these. Although they do sound good for instant messgaing music,things that dont require alot of bass or really high pitch. But these speakers are worht the 20$ for your tipical computer uses.

Can't play loudly
The speakers have a rating of 5 watts RMS, not ten as stated above. The sound is decent only at the lowest of levels - at least on my computer. They can't play loudly without considerable distortion.

Sounds good, but buzzes at high volumes
The speakers are pretty decent for the money.
I just picked them up because I just wanted a cheap pair to hold me over for a little while. The sound quality is decent. Not a lot of bass obviously, but decent.
However, if you turn the volume up more than halfway, you start hearing a constant buzzing sound which gets louder as you increase volume. A bit annoying.

But again, fo the money they aren't terrible.

amazing little speakers
This is the second set of these speakers I have purchased. These ones are going to be a gift. I've searched around for travel speakers and these guys are the best buy around: for under $20 you get 10 watts of power, adjustable bass and treble that actually works, and a very decent amount of sound.
