Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's VAIO PCV-RS210 delivers strong processing power and solid general performance at a very reasonable price. In its stock configuration, the VAIO PCV-RS210 won't allow you to burn DVD's or play the most recent 3-D games, but it's otherwise quite satisfactory for typical computer tasks.

Anchoring the VAIO PCV-RS210 is a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU. This is a relatively fast desktop processor, especially when running in conjunction with the system's generous allotment of 512 MB of memory (upgradeable to 1 GB). Sony has skimped just a bit on the 3-D capabilities by installing an Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared memory. Though the unit will handle all 2-D and some 3-D tasks, it will require a graphics card upgrade to plow through the latest high-end 3-D apps.

Sony has equipped the VAIO PCV-RS210 with an adequate 80 GB 7200 hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a convenient DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders and cameras, scanners, and external drives, the system also features four high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two i.Link (FireWire) ports, one on the rear and another at the front.

The VAIO PCV-RS210 features numerous other amenities, including a VGA monitor port, two PS/2 ports, a pair of freestanding stereo speakers, a user-friendly VAIO keyboard, and a PS/2 wheel mouse. Sony has not included a monitor, thus allowing you to utilize your current display or select from the many alternatives currently available. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2003, and several Sony multimedia utilities. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Computer/Lousy Speakers
This is my second Sony Computer. I bought another Sony as the first was reliable and had awesome sounding speakers. This Sony has a quality keyboard and mouse, and has performed well since purchase. Unfortunately it has one significant flaw, ...poor sounding speakers. How cheap, I saw the same "Made in China" speakers selling for six dollars a pair at a discount store. Shame on you Sony, not what I've come to expect from Sony products. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

The HP Pavilion a710n is a great entry level PC that's ready for your multimedia needs. It's powered by Windows XP Home Edition and it features a 2.20 GHz Athlon XP 3100+ processor, 512 MB RAM, and extra-large 160 GB hard drive. It's bundled with a variety of software, including HP Image Zone Plus digital photography software, aimed to get you online and capturing, editing, and sharing your digital photos, audio, and video.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The extra-large 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video.
  • Processor: The 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon XP 3100+ processor offers a high level of performance--speedy enough for PC gaming, graphic design software, and multimedia creation. It also features an advanced 462 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a 512 KB L2 cache.
  • Memory: The A710N comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (1 x 512 MB DDR SDRAM, PC2700)--a good start for power users. It only has a 1 GB maximum memory expansion (2 x 512 MB).
  • CD/DVD Drive: The combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive can write and read CDs at 48x and rewrite at 32x speeds. It can read DVDs at 16x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The A710N comes with an HP Internet keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Sound and Graphics
The A710N features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board. The sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The video/graphics card has up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for good range of gaming graphics and multimedia video playback, but might not stack up for ultra-realistic 3-D PC games.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the A710N has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), two 3.5-inch bays (one available), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP 8x slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
  • 1 microphone, 1 headphone, and 1 line-in jack in the front
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, Smaredia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digitial, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also has a hot-swappable bay for adding an optional optical drive or second battery.

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Quicken New User Edition 2004, Norton Antivirus 2004 (with 60-day LiveUpdate subscription) and Personal Firewall 2003, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Encarta Encyclopedia 2004 Standard Edition, HP Image Zone Plus, RecordNow 7.2 (for burning CDs), WinDVD SE 5.0 (for DVD playback), and Apple iTunes.

The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.

Amazon.com Product Description

Along with its slightly less powerful siblings, the VAIO PCV-W10 and PCV-W20, Sony's inventive VAIO PCV-W30 represents a bright new look for desktop PCs. In contrast to the bulky multi-component setup of traditional PCs, the VAIO PCV-W30 sports a sleek all-in-one fold-open design that more closely resembles a notebook. Fashionable, futuristic and very easy to setup and use, Sony's latest PC will appeal to those with limited space and an eye for style.

It won't, however, set any speed records. Driven by a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB), the VAIO PCV-W30 offers solid but unspectacular performance. The unit's graphics chipset, a 32 MB SiS 651, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics or dabbles in 3-D games.

Included inside the VAIO PCV-W30 is a combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which users can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the integrated 15.3-inch LCD display, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store MP3s on the large 80 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed.

Sony has enhanced the VAIO PCV-W30 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, three lightning quick USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, dual IEEE 1394 FireWire interfaces for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest, as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter.

Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Age of Empire 2, and an impressive array of music, video and image editing utilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Right out of the box
This Sony PC worked right out of the box. I just plugged it in and started using it. The ports are easy to find and use, although it does not support older legacy (non-USB) peripherals. It is a very elegant looking machine, and the screen resolution is superb. My only complaints are a smallish keyboard and weak sounding speakers. You can connect aftermarket speakers and keyboard, of course.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for college
Well, I was debating whether to get a laptop or a desktop for college, and then I came across this computer. It's sort of a hybrid between the two and came with many nice features at a decent price. This computer has given me no problems and has been very convient and easy to use. I recommend it for people with little space or who just want a computer that looks cool.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Computer, Great Value
I just picked my Vaio W30 up a few days ago and it is great. I think it is being marketed as a PC for people who don't know much about computers but as someone who is familiar with computers and technology, I really loved the size, the look, the functionality and the price. At 1600 dollars this is a gerat deal. Only drawback is that it does not come packaged with Office or anything which kind of sucks if you don't own Office already and have to pay another 400 bucks for it (like I do). Basically I use my personal computer for music, movies, iPod, digital camera, internet, Word and Excel. This is ample computer for that. 512 MB of RAM...as an average computer user you can't possibly need more than that. 2GHz processor, there are faster computers out there but really ask yourself if you need it. You probably don't unless you're doing graphic design or lots of intense digital movie editing. The screen is gorgeous and I am very pleasantly surprised by the speaker quality. Although I am hooking mine up to different speakers, these speakers are more than sufficient for a casual user. This is, as advertised, easy to set up. Plug in the mouse, plug in the computer and you're all set. My favorite aspect is the fact that on the side you have 2 USB 2.0 ports (there is a separate mouse port), 2 FireWire connections, a digital memory stick...this computer is made for the person with lots of gadgets.
I'd say the pros are all listed above (price, small size, functionality) and the cons are: inability to upgrade this (although for a casual user or a college student, etc. this will last for several years) and the lack of quality bundled software.
I truly recommend this for different types of people. It is great for young people who want a hip looking multi-media capable computer. It is great for first-time PC users b/c of it's simple design and streamlined approach. Sony is a good company (I'd buy from them directly though rather than here and get the 2 year warranty) and they've made a great computer. Buy it knowing you are getting a wonderful computer for a tremendous price. ... Read more

Targeting multimedia fans, the Sony VAIO PCV-RS310 Desktop with its built-in CD and DVD burning capabilities and generous audio-video software package, delivers strong processing power and solid general performance at a reasonable price. Businesspeople and serious gamers will either want to look elsewhere or perform after-purchase upgrades, but most home users with a penchant for music, movies, and photos should find the VAIO PCV-RS310 quite satisfactory.

Anchoring the unit is a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU. Though the unit will handle all 2-D and some 3-D tasks, it won't do the latest games or breeze through instances of heavy multitasking.

Sony has equipped the VAIO PCV-RS310 with an adequate 80 GB 7200 hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and an extremely versatile DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters and turn your home movies into DVDs. As the junior member of Sony's new Vaio PCV-RZ2 series of "Digital Studio" PCs, the Vaio PCV-RZ22G desktop offers solid performance and exceptional multimedia capabilities at a considerably more affordable price point than that of its power-packed siblings, the state-of-the-art PCV-RZ26G or the PCV-RZ24G.

If speed is what you crave, the Vaio PCV-RZ22G delivers. Outfitted with a fast 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB of premium PC-2700 333 MHz DDR memory (expandable to 1 GB), and a 533 MHz bus, it's ready to blast through all but the most demanding applications. The system's graphics card, a TV tuner-equipped 64 MB nVidia GeForce4 MX440, will handle the vast majority of applications but may have some problems smoothly rendering ultrahigh-end 3-D games and drawing or animation packages.

When it comes to data storage and movement, Sony has left nothing to chance. The Vaio PCV-RZ22G is fitted with a large 80 GB 7,200 rpm Ultra ATA/100 hard disk for your frequently accessed programs and files, a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for older or smaller applications, and a combination DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and create your own DVDs. 5-0 out of 5 stars Great "Household" System
Have had for 6 months with no problems. Networked with 2 other home based PC (Compaq and home made). Can hook your TV cable onto back of Sony and watch all cable channels on your Flatscreen!
This system is a very good deal. Everything you would ever need , all in one packet!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Machine - Sony Has No Customer Service Skills!
The Sony Vaio RZ22G is a nice system - with lots of software - DVD-RW/+RW / lots of ports / just about everything you might need. Except - hmmmm - the video software ... - Call Sony about a problem with it during the support period - and after an automated survey of questions - then someone that doesn't even know anything about the computer gets on the phone to help you - need I say more - you ask for a supervisor - they put an "expert" on the phone - and still nothing. SONY HAS NO CUSTOMER SERVICE!!! If they did - with their nice machines - they would be good competition for the big guys - e.g. DELL -but - SONY HAS NO CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid machine, good performance, lots of ports
The P4 2.4B processor is really a 2.0Ghz processor in disguise. Because of the improved chipset, Intel sells it as a "2.4 Ghz" processor, I guess kind of like how AMD names their processors (i.e., "1800+", "2400+", etc.)

The RZ22G is designed to be a digital A/V (audio video) powerhorse, and it shines. The Sony DVD-R/RW/+R/RW burner (manufactured in Malaysia) is well integrated into the system, and you can use the Click-to-DVD program to burn your home-made DVDs quickly and painlessly. It also comes with Adobe Premiere LE which allows you to edit video clips. BTW, you can hook up MiniDV camcorders *as well as* RCA-connector analog devices, like 8mm camcorders, VCRs, etc. The included capture board can digitize the analog video.

[Sidenote: Most Sony MiniDV camcorders come with built-in digitizers so you can always use them as a conduit to capture videos from analog devices.]

The number of included ports is impressive. There are six USB 2.0 high-speed ports, with two in the front and four in the back. There are two IEEE 1394 ports, one 4-pin i.Link in the front and one 6-in regular IEEE 1394 in the back. You also get PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports as well as serial and parallel ports. Pretty much everything you need! The inclusion of MemoryStick slot and floppy drive (take note, Dell!) makes this a very complete system in terms of inputting information.

I always thought Sony was expensive, but they've been aggressively pricing their VAIO computers and they now represent pretty good values. You can get a Dell for cheaper, but not when you consider what Sony gives you: IEEE 1394, tons and tons of software, a large hard drive, a dual-format ("minus" and "plus") fast DVD burner. I've done a lot of configuration comparisons, and I think the RZ-series totally beats Dell and HP in terms of overall value.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very pleased (so far)
I'm very pleased so far with this computer. You could easily spend a few hundred dollars more outfitting a stripped down Compaq or HP with the hardware and software extras that this one comes with. The features I like the most are the built-in cable TV tuner (a real space saver), and the ability to hook up to my analog camcorder (I haven't gone digital yet + I have tons of 8 mm tapes that I need to save before they crumble to oblivion). I've tried putting together a simple DVD from one of my tapes using Sony's Click to DVD software and everything's worked flawlessly. Although it is true that Click to DVD feature set is very basic, you do have an option to jazz up your video clips beforehand in Adobe Premier, the LE version of which comes preloaded on the machine .... ...

2-0 out of 5 stars Sony should stick to TV's
I have been very disappointed with my new Sony Vaio. They advertise it as a media machine, however, it doesn't come with much of the software I needed. i.e. There is no Audio Capture software. The CD/DVD burning software is limited as to the number of formats it will burn.
However, most of my frustration has come from trying to get phone support from Sony. After a few hundred questions from the automated phone attendant and 30-40 minutes on hold, their support people seem to be less than knowledgeable and very disinterested in helping.
Bottom line: Buy a Dell! ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

There was a time not so very long ago that a desktop computer in this price range was incapable of anything other than absolute basic tasks. But with the new Presario SR1010NX Desktop PC, Compaq proves those days are over. Though it won't suit a demanding business environment or dedicated gaming studio, the Presario SR1010NX will fit right in to most home, home office or school dorm environments.

Driven by a cost-efficient Intel Celeron processor running at 2.7 GHz, a minimal alloent of 256 MB main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video controller with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario SR1010NX is definitely not a world-class speed machine or a 3-D powerhouse. However, for basic computer duties such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic communication and homework, it is more than adequate. Those who frequently multitask will need to double the system's memory, and anyone who stores large libraries of files will want to upgrade the enclosed hard disk, which at just 40 GB is certainly smallish.

Compaq has installed a 3.5-inch diskette drive for small backups and older applications and a CD-RW optical drive through which you can load applications, play audio CDs and backup important data. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD playing or writing. Nor does it include an IEEE 1394 FireWire" port (normally used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), though it does feature a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and gadgets such as USB-capable digital cameras and printers.

Other desirable amenities include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication, a low-speed dial-up 56K modem, a Compaq keyboard and scrolling Compaq mouse, and two free PCI slots for adding devices such as high-powered video and audio cards and additional connections. The Basics
Compaq’s new and exceedingly comprehensive Presario SR1100NX series of desktop PCs targets most every segment of the computer buyer market -- from financially strapped students to high-power business executives. This particular unit, the Presario SR1170NX, is the flagship model of the series, delivering lots of power and enough features for all but the most demanding power users. Equipped with luxuries such as CD and DVD recording, strong 3D graphics support and a huge 200 GB hard disk, the system is ready for virtually any situation -- from entertainment and gaming center to office hub. Compaq has moderated the price by installing a potent but not quite top-of-the-line CPU, and therefore the unit is not ideal for those seeking absolute cutting-edge performance. But for anyone else, the Presario SR1170NX should suffice quite nicely.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. For the Presario SR1170NX, Compaq has installed a fast yet comparatively cost-effective Intel Pentium 4 processor 2.80E processor, running at 2.8 GHz and supporting Intel's new Hyper-Threading technology. Hyper-Threading, a recent Intel innovation, allows a single CPU system -- which most are -- to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications. Sufficient even for challenging tasks, this CPU also delivers solid bang for the buck and is a wise choice for those who need power but don't want to pay for overkill.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Presario SR1170NX features 512 MB of fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory (expandable to two full GB). An average allotment for today's high-end computers, this RAM module's rated speed is nevertheless faster than that of the majority of RAM chips in today's market. As such, it is more than enough for most single task and multitasking assignments.

Video
CPU’s are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). The Presario SR1170NX features an nVidia GeForce FX5100XT AGP 8x graphics card with 128 MB of dedicated video memory (preferable to the "shared" memory found on many video cards). This card is capable of accurately displaying virtually any 2D application and delivering smooth frame rates and immersive, lifelike visuals to the 3D animations found in industry leading computer games and 3D animation packages.

Compaq has not included a monitor, thus allowing you to continue using your current display screen or select from today’s many alternatives.

Sound
The Presario SR1170NX produces six-channel sound via an audio chip integrated on the motherboard. This is a typical configuration, producing satisfying surround sound for DVD movies and traditional stereo for music. Users may wish to add a dedicated sound card if audiophile-level output is a priority. Speakers are not enclosed.

Hard Drive
The system's 200 GB hard drive is considered generous in any price range, sporting enough storage space for a massive allotment of files and applications and a huge music or multimedia collection too. Most users will have a hard time ever filling this hard drive.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today’s computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies and archive files to durable DVD discs (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD).

The Presario SR1170NX features dual optical drives - a 48X CD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs, and a fast DVD+R/RW drive for all that other fun stuff. Having two optical drives also allows you to copy from one CD to another with much less effort and much more speed than with a single drive.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports at your disposal -- three of which are conveniently located on the front of the unit -- you’ll have plenty of room for plug and play gadgets such as printers, scanners and joysticks. The system also includes two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (commonly used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders) and a built-in 9-in-1 memory card reader for accessing information stored on a wide variety of removable memory cards. Communication options include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication and a V.92 data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections. Two available PCI slots may be used for add-on audio cards, video cards, and the like.

Operating System and Software
The Presario SR1170NX features an impressive software package headed by Microsoft’s Windows XP Home Edition operating system. Compaq will also pre-install Microsoft’s Works 7.0 word processing and productivity suite, Microsoft Money Standard 2004, Quicken New User Edition 2004, and an assortment of multimedia and Internet utilities.

Keyboard and Mouse
A Compaq multimedia keyboard and accurate, hassle-free optical mouse are enclosed. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

As the high-end model in Sony’s "RS" series of Digital Studio Desktops, the Sony VAIO PCV-RS430G delivers everything a multimedia fan could want, including CD and DVD burning capabilities, television recording, and enough power for virtually any application. Gamers playing the most recent and most demanding 3-D titles may want to upgrade the graphics card, but most users should find the VAIO PCV-RS420 more than satisfactory.

Anchoring the unit is a powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading is a new Intel-developed process that allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking). Sony has added 512 MB of fast PC2700 333 MHz DDR RAM and an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card with 64 MB dedicated video memory and a DVI output for optimum connection with flat-panel LCD displays.

The VAIO PCV-RS430G features several data storage options, including a massive 120 GB 7200 RPM hard disk, a handy 3.5-inch diskette drive for smaller backups and older programs, and an extremely versatile DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters and turn your home movies into DVDs. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, Sony has added seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two i.Link FireWire ports.

The unit also incorporates Sony’s proprietary Giga Pocket Personal Video Recorder, an VCR-like application that converts television picture signals into MPEG2 data and thus allows users to record and later watch standard broadcast programming via the computer. Other desirable amenities include a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet connection for fast networking and Internet speeds, a low-speed v.90 modem, a pair of small desktop speakers, a user-friendly VAIO keyboard, and a PS/2 wheel mouse. 4-0 out of 5 stars Great RS430G
Great Computer.

Giga Pocket is nice for recording right out of Cable outlet
(co-ax). Multiple recording modes/speeds (LP/SP/AVI).

Nice chip speed (2.8 ghz). Nice HD size (120 gb).
Great Sony added tools: Click to DVD, PictureGear Studio,
DVgate Plus, SonicStage & VAIO Media. Have not even begun to
use all yet, nor max out their capabilities.

DVD-RW/CD-RW...Superb.

512 Ram (exp to 2 gb).

ATI Radeon™ 9200 Video Card - 128MB Video Memory (128-bit DDR)
really rocks. Using for high-end Cadd softwares. Max'd it with
really large complex multi-featured assembly & it blew away
the high-end graphics card on my work desktop.

Nothing left to say. I am currently looking for a laptop now.

I will only look for Sony.

1-0 out of 5 stars Extreme Disappointment
If you buy Sony Giga Pocket hoping to back up your "home video tapes" like the advertizing suggests, then you are in for an unpleasant surprise. This WILL NOT record anything that has copyright protection! So even if you own your VHS tapes, you are out of luck and may have wasted over a grand on the Sony computer. Sony doesn't make this clear, and they don't have the courtesy of acknowledging problems or comments on their help site. I have to be careful about the strength of my comments, or AMAZON will censure them! But this is a waste of money and much time!

5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely pleased
I have 3 weeks with this computer and so far it has been awesome, no problems at all. Fast and quiet, you burn cd's very fast and acurate. It comes with lots of software.
After doing a lot of research I can proudly say I made the right choice. Only thing you may want to change are the speakers, and maybe a wireless mouse.
Giga pocket is amazing! I definitely recommend this desktop computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of all
This is the best computer I ever had. The Giga Pocket Technology rocks. No more VCR or second TV, DVD Player etc. in your bedroom. I think this is right direction for the convergence. You can watch cable tv, record and burn dvd. You can set the timer to record the TV programs and watch whenever you want. It comes with good software.

I am a proud owner of this computer.

Two thumbs up.

5-0 out of 5 stars So far so good
Pros: I have been using this for a week with the default configuration and everything seems to work flawlessly. DVD burning is easy (though slow). Giga pocket recorder works good ( have not tried that remote yet, don't need it :)). All my software installed without problems. Speed is accpetable ( I am not a gamer). Speed is good enough to do video editing and photo manipulation and such. After owining a cheap compaq before; it seems like sony is more refined and has a lot less bugs. DVDs/CDs written with sony software play well on other devices.

Cons: 1. I have not tried it, but looks like it not intuitive to upgrade it ( Most of the reviewers bashing it have tried to install new graphics card or Xp professional or something like that.) 2. The included remote might be flaky based on reviews, so I am so far staying clear from it. 3. Does not ship with recovery CDs. You can burn one once you get it running which is what I did. But it would have been nice to have one shipped with it. It shouldn't cost sony that much! ( Not a big minus in my opinion)
4. It is best to lighten the load on the CPU while using Giga pocket explorer. Sometimes doing lot of things together with Giga can cause the system to freeze ( very infrequent so far) ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

As the midlevel model in HP's wide-ranging a300n series of desktop computers, the HP Pavilion a320n Desktop PC represents a happy medium between upscale performance and affordability. Though it doesn't feature state-of-the-art amenities such as a DVD writer or an Intel Pentium 4 Hyper-Threading processor, it is more than ready to handle most any home, home office, leisure and business application.

Driven by a reasonably efficient and cost-effective 2.08 GHz AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU, the Pavilion a320n Desktop is not blessed with top-notch processing speed. It does, however, feature quality components elsewhere that help keep the unit faster and more capable than expected. HP has added 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory, so multitasking is not a problem. It has equipped the system with an nVidia GeForce4 MX graphics card with 64 MB of dedicated video memory to allow you to blaze through all but high-end 3-D games and 3-D graphics packages. And it has included a massive 120 GB hard disk so you'll have plenty of room for programs, games, and a full multimedia library.

Other key amenities include a CD-RW drive for playing and burning audio and data discs, a DVD-ROM drive through which you can play DVD movies, and a 7-in-1 digital card reader for accessing memory cards from PDAs, digital cameras, and the like. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD writing.

HP has clearly built the Pavilion a320n Desktop to meet current and future expansion and connectivity needs. The unit features five high-speed USB 2.0 ports (one of the front) for exchanging information with external devices such as digital cameras and scanners, two FireWire ports (one on the front) for fast interaction with digital camcorders, front-mounted microphone and headphone ports, two available PCI slots, one available AGP slot, and a six-speaker surround sound audio controller. Communication options include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up surfing and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface for high-speed e-communications. An HP multimedia keyboard with hotkeys and a PS/2 mouse with scrolling wheel complete the hardware picture.

A monitor and speakers are not enclosed, thus allowing you to select from the wide variety of choices available today. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice computer after?
I bought this computer Dec.28th 2003. It has a lot of great features and is fast.
My problems came when my monitor wouldn`t always come up the first try. I then called tech support twice and tried a few things with no help. I then purchased a nice graphics card which solved my problem reminding me that on board graphics aren`t always good.
I removed all the buy this and that stuff and then I have a very nice computer.
I also forgot to mention that Best Buy`s low price guarentee is a lie. I found the computer 100.00 cheaper at circuit city and they would only refund 50.00 even after they verified it.

1-0 out of 5 stars If it doesn't work, take it back DAY 1
I bought the a320n on the last day of the year for my business. Good thing I had a weeks worth of vacation and some slack time because this lemon became my new hobby! I got it all booted up and yes, uninstalled all of the HP "let's sell you something" software. I then tried to install my new HP printer (4110). CRASH, CRASH, CRASH. After 14 hours on customer support (OK, I'm tenacious) to Nova Scotia and India, I received 8 different reasons this might be happening. The last one was what made me bring it back and swear off HP products. Customer support told me that I had getten a virus from my Internet use. Ya know those viruses are REALLY tricky when you can get them without ever being able to connect to the net. I can laugh now but beware. I am writing from my new emachine. Easy set up, so far so good and with luck, I'll never get to know tech support.
One thing I can't get back is the tax break for '03.

4-0 out of 5 stars So far, so good
I bought this PC as a replacement for a Compaq Pressario that burned out after a year.
It had the features I wanted for a sane amount of money,
namely CD/RW and DVD player. Also a hard drive big enough
for a small radio station worth of music files (My own,
thank you music industry lawyers!)
I can't see an appreciable difference in performance from
my old pentium 4.
It's quiet, generally smooth, runs my CD software and some
good sized games without difficulty.
All the drawbacks relate to Windows XP. It took a weekend to
locate and properly install drivers for printer and other
common items, and the machine was loaded with ads and spy-ware.
(I believe Microsoft's term for this is "clients".)
Once I got rid of all the Microsoft garbage, "free" (as in enter your credit card number just for fun) offers and put some
brakes on it's internet access (I swear, XP is worse than
having a teenager) everything seems to work well.
The memory card slots, front end audio jacks and 5 USB ports are a nice touch. It also comes with a real instruction manual
with step by step illustrated directions for upgrading the system.
I'd recommend it for the money- it was much cheaper than my Compaq- but I'm curious to see how it holds up.
My only other gripe is a lack of back-up software. It comes
pre-loaded on the hard drive (and can be copied and removed,
but only once). This strikes me as not terribly smart if
you can't get the PC booted right out of the box.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great machine, but...
I bought two of these machines, one for me and one for my mother-in-law, because of the great deal. My machine worked great except for a little bit of intermittent "whirring" that I paid no attention to. The other machine had problems even burning a full set of the system recovery disks, however.

It turns out the 2nd machine had a power supply issue which made the CD-RW and hard drive work intermittently; not a good thing. I determined that the noise from the 1st machine was the same problem, though I experienced no performance issues.

Just to be safe, though, I'm returning both and upgrading to the 350. I wanted a DVD burner anyway and I'm eager to see what the "hyper-threading technology" can do for a processor. I'll probably review that one next week (1/04).

So, all-in-all, I didn't have the machine long but really liked it. If there are no problems, it's fast, quiet, runs mid-level games very well (didn't try anything real high-end), has very easy-to-use recording software, has lots of storage device ports and looks great. Perfect for the intermediate user. I guess it's just a matter of getting one with everything working (as I've found several problem-filled reviews on-line).

Note: A previous reviewer said that the PC doesn't come with any disks, which is true. If you've purchased any computers in the past 5 years however, you know that there is a trend towards pre-loaded everything without disks (cab files, etc.), including Windows. That is why you should create a set of system recovery disks when you first get the PC (finding out if the CD-RW works correctly while you're at it), though I'm not sure why they only allow you to do it once. Make copies of those disks, I guess! The rest of the disks you used to get with a PC was just useless software anyway. And there are multiple ways to "restore", including a Windows restore option. Read the manual.

The reviewer also mentioned the fact that there is a lot of "junk" "trial software" and that it wasn't listed in the control panel. Unless you build your own PC, they pretty much all come like this and the software is easily deleted. No, you can't do it from "Add/Remove Programs" but if you know your way around a PC a little bit, it's not a problem. (If not, don't worry; you have a 120GB hard drive after all!) The software companies aren't subsidizing the PC makers just so you can remove all their software as soon as you get the machine! You can argue that you didn't pay all that money to have to take stuff out, but in actuality you probably did, considering the comparatively low price.

Also at issue was the "HP Organizer". This isn't the type of program for me, but I can see it being handy to the novice PC user. There is a link right on the window for options, which allows you to tell it not to run at boot-up. Pretty simple. It only interferes with Windows as long as you keep it open. Just click the, "X". Again, pretty simple.

Whatever you do, however, don't buy a Dell. I'd go into the horror stories about the Dell users I know, but it's the holidays and you don't need that kind of carnage on your mind.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Computer
I bought this computer about a month ago and absolutly love it. The 7 in one media bay on the front is suprisingly handy for digital cameras, and the software seems to be flawless. Everything you could possibly need for your home computer is included. I would also like to add that this computer really includes just about any of the software you will need to use right out of the box. Except for installing a couple drivers, this computer is good to go the moment you plug it in. Everything seems to work extrememly smoothly. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Review

Early Adopters Pick: June 2003 The world's fastest personal computer and the first with a 64-bit processor -- which means it breaks the 4 GB barrier and can use up to 8 GB of main memory.

Hailed as the fastest personal computer ever released and featuring a truly remarkable set of technological breakthroughs, Apple's Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A is clearly designed for discriminating individuals who simply won't settle for anything less than the very best. For extreme performance and unrelenting power, this, the top of the line Power Mac G5 model, is as good as it gets.

Driven by not one but two 2 GHz Power PC G5 processors, 512 MB ultra-fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory per processor (expandable to a gargantuan 8 GB!), and an ATI RADEON 9600 Pro graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM video memory, the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A certainly seems impressive. But those figures only begin to tell the story. For its latest desktop, Apple teamed with IBM to redesign its leading-edge CPU architecture. Accordingly, the new Power PC G5 is the world's first 64-bit processor. With two of these 2 GB powerhouses running in tandem -- each sporting an industry-leading 1 GHz frontside bus -- the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A delivers nearly double the throughout of a single 3 GHz Pentium 4-based machine and, according to Apple, runs standard Photoshop tests at 2.2 times the speed of a single 3 GHz Pentium.

But there's more than raw power lurking inside the futuristic anodized aluminum case. For starters, Apple has compartmentalized the unit into four independent sections to direct appropriate airflow to each key component. A total of nine fans work to keep things cool, yet all are extremely low-speed. Thusly the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A runs three times quieter than the previous Power Mac G4 enclosure.

Apple has loaded the unit with data handling features, including a monstrous 160 GB 7200 RPM hard disk and a DVD-R/CD-RW combo drive (4X DVD write speed) through which you can archive information, play and burn audio CDs, enjoy the latest movies and record home videos. To help you transfer data to and from external peripherals such as optical drives and digital camcorders and cameras, the system also sports two high-speed FireWire 400 ports, one ultra-fast FireWire 800 port, three USB 2.0 ports and two USB 1.1 ports.

Other key amenities include a convenient Apple Pro keyboard, an Apple Pro mouse, three available high-performance PCI-X slots for future expansion, and a broad array of multimedia and Internet software. Connectivity facilities include an integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port, a built-in 56K modem, and AirPort Extreme wireless support (with an AirPort Extreme card). Speakers and display are available separately. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Video Card a Minor Problem at Best
I've been a PC user since the good old days of the soldering iron, my last mac was an old powerbook running OS 6 or 7, either way - it was a long time ago. The main thing thats been keeping me from getting a Mac was price, and I must say - it's getting a lot better. I bought the dual 2.0Ghz configuration from the apple store along with the new 20" LCD (that still hasn't shipped ~_~) and it rocks. The biggest problem people have mentioned on the various reviews is the 64mb card - if it means that much to you, go to the Apple Store on their site and configure your own system with a 9800 or an x800 or a different 9600 if you'd like. I got a 9800 personally. I don't understand how anyone can claim a PC runs faster than this, perhaps with video games but for standard use (this coming from a person to whome standard refers to compiling java) its much better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic machine
The guy who is obviously dumping on Apple and the G5 to get his jollies needs to go elsewhere. I'm quite sure he knows nothing about Macs or Apple. The hardware on this Mac blows Intel out of the water and it's OS blows XP away. Early reviews before the latest version of OS X called "Panther" showed slower results than the new version of the OS which is designed for the G5 and is much faster. For the guy who gave it one star because it doesn't run Virtual PC all I can say is Puh-lease. First of all that is no reason to give it one star plus it is not true that the G5 can only run one OS it can also run multiple versions of Linux. Finally there IS a new version of Virtual PC coming out soon that will run on the G5.

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and full understanding
To complain about prices or chosen base graphics card is ridiculous. If you want to compare this product with a custom made computer... CUSTOM ADD SOME STUFF TO IT! The price of PC3200 memory is exactly the same for this as for a P4 system. Find 512MB sticks for 115 bucks each and then pop 8 in. Presto, 4 gigs for 900 bucks (AN ABSOLUTE BARGAIN!)It would cost more than twice that on a Dell (Dell=gag!).

I actually appreciate the barebones nature of this machine, it allowed me to save money by pricewatching my memory instead of paying the out of box price. Try maxing out a Sony PC, or even a Dell out of the box, its way more money than if you just pop in some yourself.

Compare this beauty to a Sony desktop, its every bit as slick and its actually usefully slick instead of just shiny to get you to pay more money. And seriosly, PC gamers are ruining the whole idea of computers as powerful tools, and Microsoft is doing a glorios job at promoting this. Win XP is THE video game platform for all the twenty somethings that should really just grow up. Big video graphics cards aren't even used by Windows except in games, OS X panther uses video hardware every chance it gets and enhances productivity. This machine is for work for Pete's sake, look at the price tag. If you're using this primarily for games, you simply have no respect for your dollar. Plain and simple.

About OS X, I would pay 200-400 dollars extra just for this operating system. It is actually worth money to me, VS Win XP which is a dime a dozen. If the speed were the same or slower i would still want Panther, it is quite simply DESIRABLE. It makes me want to work, and it definitely promotes creativity. My PC is like creating inside a prison cell. Panther is like a summer cabin.

Compare this to any similarly priced PC out of the box and you would see that there is little comparison. Compare this to a custom made PC, and you would have to admit that the case and cooling alone would have a market value of 400 bucks. Buy it barebones and add stuff if you're concerned about the bang for your buck. It's simply right for professionals to be open about these machines, Apple doesn't reverse engineer like Microsoft does... it actually comes up with things, and makes using a computer interesting again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sure it's fast, but do you want a Boeing 747 in your room?
On Apple's web site it says "Designed for whisper-quiet operation." Well, *maybe* it is *designed* for it. But it doesn't *achieve* it. This thing is loud! I'd like to know if anyone with the 2.5GHz model knows whether that is quieter, because maybe that is what I should buy instead. The 2.0 GHz model is one loud puppy, the fan noise is easily as lound as some servers at my office.

1-0 out of 5 stars Even pros don't see the vaulue anymore
I have been a Mac afficianado for 20 years and owned or useed at least 20 models professionally. I know I will get a low "helpful" rating on this review, but I suspect professionals and some people who really understand where Mac has failed will agree.

In my current firm, which is quite leading edge, we are now at about 75% pc based machines. The more experienced the designer, the more likely they are to have thrown in the towel on MAC. The fact is that for a given amount of money to spend on a system: $2,000; $2,500; $3000; $4,000, you name it, less or more, MAC is will deliver less performance, less upgradablity, and as anyone who has used panther (os x) knows (and this is incredible)...less stability.

One example of how Apple has decided to treat us like fools is to equip this machine (and in the advertising copy breathless brag!) with 64 meg vidio card. Doesn't that say it all?

I have spent years advocating Macs. All of us Apple fans have a hard time admitting it, but the truth is the entire G5 line is an overpriced insult.

Price out what you will get in a pc for $3000, or even the $2600 you get this machine with the academic discount which you can get if you have a third cousin in grammer school (another insult is fixed pricing vs the "academic discount" option which rewards all apple buyers for lying).

Look at the independent benchmarks (not the skewed ones where apple or its "friendly reviews have made with crippled win- pc's), compare them for the same money, Apple isn't slightly slower, it is way slower across the board. Don't even get me to start on the prices Apple charges for memory (the 1.8 dual comes with 256, that is just laughable, and here we have a $3,000 machine with only 512!!!). I mean it is gouging that is shameless. Now look at the apple cinema displays. 50% more money for what eveyone knows are the lowest spec displays on the market. they won't even publish the refresh rates .. and we know why. ... Read more
