Amazon.com Product Description Anchoring the VAIO PCV-RS210 is a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU. This is a relatively fast desktop processor, especially when running in conjunction with the system's generous allotment of 512 MB of memory (upgradeable to 1 GB). Sony has skimped just a bit on the 3-D capabilities by installing an Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared memory. Though the unit will handle all 2-D and some 3-D tasks, it will require a graphics card upgrade to plow through the latest high-end 3-D apps. Sony has equipped the VAIO PCV-RS210 with an adequate 80 GB 7200 hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a convenient DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information and watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders and cameras, scanners, and external drives, the system also features four high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two i.Link (FireWire) ports, one on the rear and another at the front. The VAIO PCV-RS210 features numerous other amenities, including a VGA monitor port, two PS/2 ports, a pair of freestanding stereo speakers, a user-friendly VAIO keyboard, and a PS/2 wheel mouse. Sony has not included a monitor, thus allowing you to utilize your current display or select from the many alternatives currently available. Bundled software includes Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Corel WordPerfect Office 2002, Intuit Quicken 2003, and several Sony multimedia utilities. Reviews (1)

Amazon.com Product Description It won't, however, set any speed records. Driven by a 2.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor and 512 MB of fast PC-2100 DDR RAM (expandable to 1 full GB), the VAIO PCV-W30 offers solid but unspectacular performance. The unit's graphics chipset, a 32 MB SiS 651, will handle most common tasks but is not recommended for anyone who deals primarily with 3-D graphics or dabbles in 3-D games. Included inside the VAIO PCV-W30 is a combination CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive through which users can burn and play music compilations and enjoy the latest Hollywood blockbusters. Movie buffs in particular will appreciate the integrated 15.3-inch LCD display, especially for its DVD-friendly 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio. Music aficionados can store MP3s on the large 80 GB hard drive and play CDs through the integrated stereo speakers even when the unit is closed. Sony has enhanced the VAIO PCV-W30 with a variety of welcome amenities, including a V.90 data/fax modem for low-speed e-communication, a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet interface for high-speed LAN and Internet access, three lightning quick USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals, dual IEEE 1394 FireWire interfaces for outboard devices such as DV camcorders, and a hassle-free optical mouse. The keyboard is of particular interest, as it quickly folds up and out of the way to keep your desk free of clutter. Pre-installed software includes Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Works 7.0, Microsoft Age of Empire 2, and an impressive array of music, video and image editing utilities. Reviews (3)

Amazon.com Product Description For this model, Compaq has selected a 2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 256 KB of Level 2 cache. This speedy CPU is the brains of a capable processing engine that also features 512 MB of fast DDR DRAM (expandable to a whopping 2 GB) and an integrated 48 MB Intel Extreme Graphics chip. The system bus speed is a reasonable 266 MHz. In plain English, the Presario 6027US is ready to run virtually any application currently on the market, although ardent gamers or animators may want to add a faster graphics card at a later date. Sporting a substantial 80 GB hard disk, the unit offers plenty of onboard storage space for all your programs and files. It also features a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for your smaller applications and a 24x (write) CD-RW drive through which you can record and play audio CDs and transfer and archive your data. Amazon.com Product Description Anchoring the unit is a 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU. This is a relatively fast desktop processor, but Sony has opted to moderate the end price by pairing it with a minimal allotment of 256 MB PC-2100 266 MHz DDR RAM (upgradeable to 1 GB) and an Intel 845GV Integrated Graphics chipset with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) memory. Though the unit will handle all 2-D and some 3-D tasks, it won't do the latest games or breeze through instances of heavy multitasking. Sony has equipped the VAIO PCV-RS310 with an adequate 80 GB 7200 hard disk, a 3.5-inch diskette drive, and an extremely versatile DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters and turn your home movies into DVDs. Amazon.com Product Description If speed is what you crave, the Vaio PCV-RZ22G delivers. Outfitted with a fast 2.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512 MB of premium PC-2700 333 MHz DDR memory (expandable to 1 GB), and a 533 MHz bus, it's ready to blast through all but the most demanding applications. The system's graphics card, a TV tuner-equipped 64 MB nVidia GeForce4 MX440, will handle the vast majority of applications but may have some problems smoothly rendering ultrahigh-end 3-D games and drawing or animation packages. When it comes to data storage and movement, Sony has left nothing to chance. The Vaio PCV-RZ22G is fitted with a large 80 GB 7,200 rpm Ultra ATA/100 hard disk for your frequently accessed programs and files, a 3.5-inch floppy disk drive for older or smaller applications, and a combination DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters, and create your own DVDs. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners, and external drives, the system also features a half-dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports and front- and rear-mounted IEEE 1394 FireWire connectors. The Vaio PCV-RZ22G features numerous other amenities, including a VGA/DVI port for flat-panel displays, an S/PDIF out, two PS/2 ports, a pair of freestanding stereo speakers, and a handy Vaio Smart keyboard. Sony has not included a monitor, allowing you to use your current display or select from the many available alternatives. Reviews (6)
The RZ22G is designed to be a digital A/V (audio video) powerhorse, and it shines. The Sony DVD-R/RW/+R/RW burner (manufactured in Malaysia) is well integrated into the system, and you can use the Click-to-DVD program to burn your home-made DVDs quickly and painlessly. It also comes with Adobe Premiere LE which allows you to edit video clips. BTW, you can hook up MiniDV camcorders *as well as* RCA-connector analog devices, like 8mm camcorders, VCRs, etc. The included capture board can digitize the analog video. [Sidenote: Most Sony MiniDV camcorders come with built-in digitizers so you can always use them as a conduit to capture videos from analog devices.] The number of included ports is impressive. There are six USB 2.0 high-speed ports, with two in the front and four in the back. There are two IEEE 1394 ports, one 4-pin i.Link in the front and one 6-in regular IEEE 1394 in the back. You also get PS/2 mouse and keyboard ports as well as serial and parallel ports. Pretty much everything you need! The inclusion of MemoryStick slot and floppy drive (take note, Dell!) makes this a very complete system in terms of inputting information. I always thought Sony was expensive, but they've been aggressively pricing their VAIO computers and they now represent pretty good values. You can get a Dell for cheaper, but not when you consider what Sony gives you: IEEE 1394, tons and tons of software, a large hard drive, a dual-format ("minus" and "plus") fast DVD burner. I've done a lot of configuration comparisons, and I think the RZ-series totally beats Dell and HP in terms of overall value.

Amazon.com Product Description Driven by a cost-efficient Intel Celeron processor running at 2.7 GHz, a minimal alloent of 256 MB main memory and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video controller with 64 MB shared (not dedicated) video memory, the Presario SR1010NX is definitely not a world-class speed machine or a 3-D powerhouse. However, for basic computer duties such as word processing, spreadsheets, electronic communication and homework, it is more than adequate. Those who frequently multitask will need to double the system's memory, and anyone who stores large libraries of files will want to upgrade the enclosed hard disk, which at just 40 GB is certainly smallish. Compaq has installed a 3.5-inch diskette drive for small backups and older applications and a CD-RW optical drive through which you can load applications, play audio CDs and backup important data. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD playing or writing. Nor does it include an IEEE 1394 FireWire" port (normally used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), though it does feature a half dozen high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals and gadgets such as USB-capable digital cameras and printers. Other desirable amenities include an integrated 10/100Base-T networking interface for fast Internet and network communication, a low-speed dial-up 56K modem, a Compaq keyboard and scrolling Compaq mouse, and two free PCI slots for adding devices such as high-powered video and audio cards and additional connections. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to utilize your current monitor or select from the many alternatives currently available.

Amazon.com Product Description Anchoring the unit is a powerful 2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 CPU with Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading is a new Intel-developed process that allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system -- thus boosting performance during key high-drain procedures such as multitasking). Sony has added 512 MB of fast PC2700 333 MHz DDR RAM and an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card with 64 MB dedicated video memory and a DVI output for optimum connection with flat-panel LCD displays. The VAIO PCV-RS430G features several data storage options, including a massive 120 GB 7200 RPM hard disk, a handy 3.5-inch diskette drive for smaller backups and older programs, and an extremely versatile DVD-RW/CD-RW drive through which you can burn and play audio CDs, archive information, watch the latest Hollywood blockbusters and turn your home movies into DVDs. To ensure fast interaction with peripherals such as digital camcorders, scanners and external drives, Sony has added seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports and two i.Link FireWire ports. The unit also incorporates Sonys proprietary Giga Pocket Personal Video Recorder, an VCR-like application that converts television picture signals into MPEG2 data and thus allows users to record and later watch standard broadcast programming via the computer. Other desirable amenities include a 10Base-T/100Base-TX Fast Ethernet connection for fast networking and Internet speeds, a low-speed v.90 modem, a pair of small desktop speakers, a user-friendly VAIO keyboard, and a PS/2 wheel mouse. A display screen is not enclosed, thus allowing you to utilize your current monitor or select from the many alternatives currently available. Bundled software includes Microsoft Works 7.0, Intuit Quicken 2003, and oodles of Sony multimedia utilities. Reviews (5)
Giga Pocket is nice for recording right out of Cable outlet Nice chip speed (2.8 ghz). Nice HD size (120 gb). DVD-RW/CD-RW...Superb. 512 Ram (exp to 2 gb). ATI Radeon™ 9200 Video Card - 128MB Video Memory (128-bit DDR) Nothing left to say. I am currently looking for a laptop now. I will only look for Sony.
I am a proud owner of this computer. Two thumbs up.
Cons: 1. I have not tried it, but looks like it not intuitive to upgrade it ( Most of the reviewers bashing it have tried to install new graphics card or Xp professional or something like that.) 2. The included remote might be flaky based on reviews, so I am so far staying clear from it. 3. Does not ship with recovery CDs. You can burn one once you get it running which is what I did. But it would have been nice to have one shipped with it. It shouldn't cost sony that much! ( Not a big minus in my opinion)

Amazon.com Product Description Driven by a reasonably efficient and cost-effective 2.08 GHz AMD Athlon 2800+ CPU, the Pavilion a320n Desktop is not blessed with top-notch processing speed. It does, however, feature quality components elsewhere that help keep the unit faster and more capable than expected. HP has added 512 MB DDR SDRAM memory, so multitasking is not a problem. It has equipped the system with an nVidia GeForce4 MX graphics card with 64 MB of dedicated video memory to allow you to blaze through all but high-end 3-D games and 3-D graphics packages. And it has included a massive 120 GB hard disk so you'll have plenty of room for programs, games, and a full multimedia library. Other key amenities include a CD-RW drive for playing and burning audio and data discs, a DVD-ROM drive through which you can play DVD movies, and a 7-in-1 digital card reader for accessing memory cards from PDAs, digital cameras, and the like. In its stock configuration, the system does not support DVD writing. HP has clearly built the Pavilion a320n Desktop to meet current and future expansion and connectivity needs. The unit features five high-speed USB 2.0 ports (one of the front) for exchanging information with external devices such as digital cameras and scanners, two FireWire ports (one on the front) for fast interaction with digital camcorders, front-mounted microphone and headphone ports, two available PCI slots, one available AGP slot, and a six-speaker surround sound audio controller. Communication options include a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up surfing and a 10/100Base-T Ethernet interface for high-speed e-communications. An HP multimedia keyboard with hotkeys and a PS/2 mouse with scrolling wheel complete the hardware picture. A monitor and speakers are not enclosed, thus allowing you to select from the wide variety of choices available today. Reviews (7)
It turns out the 2nd machine had a power supply issue which made the CD-RW and hard drive work intermittently; not a good thing. I determined that the noise from the 1st machine was the same problem, though I experienced no performance issues. Just to be safe, though, I'm returning both and upgrading to the 350. I wanted a DVD burner anyway and I'm eager to see what the "hyper-threading technology" can do for a processor. I'll probably review that one next week (1/04). So, all-in-all, I didn't have the machine long but really liked it. If there are no problems, it's fast, quiet, runs mid-level games very well (didn't try anything real high-end), has very easy-to-use recording software, has lots of storage device ports and looks great. Perfect for the intermediate user. I guess it's just a matter of getting one with everything working (as I've found several problem-filled reviews on-line). Note: A previous reviewer said that the PC doesn't come with any disks, which is true. If you've purchased any computers in the past 5 years however, you know that there is a trend towards pre-loaded everything without disks (cab files, etc.), including Windows. That is why you should create a set of system recovery disks when you first get the PC (finding out if the CD-RW works correctly while you're at it), though I'm not sure why they only allow you to do it once. Make copies of those disks, I guess! The rest of the disks you used to get with a PC was just useless software anyway. And there are multiple ways to "restore", including a Windows restore option. Read the manual. The reviewer also mentioned the fact that there is a lot of "junk" "trial software" and that it wasn't listed in the control panel. Unless you build your own PC, they pretty much all come like this and the software is easily deleted. No, you can't do it from "Add/Remove Programs" but if you know your way around a PC a little bit, it's not a problem. (If not, don't worry; you have a 120GB hard drive after all!) The software companies aren't subsidizing the PC makers just so you can remove all their software as soon as you get the machine! You can argue that you didn't pay all that money to have to take stuff out, but in actuality you probably did, considering the comparatively low price. Also at issue was the "HP Organizer". This isn't the type of program for me, but I can see it being handy to the novice PC user. There is a link right on the window for options, which allows you to tell it not to run at boot-up. Pretty simple. It only interferes with Windows as long as you keep it open. Just click the, "X". Again, pretty simple. Whatever you do, however, don't buy a Dell. I'd go into the horror stories about the Dell users I know, but it's the holidays and you don't need that kind of carnage on your mind.

Amazon.com Product Review Hailed as the fastest personal computer ever released and featuring a truly remarkable set of technological breakthroughs, Apple's Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A is clearly designed for discriminating individuals who simply won't settle for anything less than the very best. For extreme performance and unrelenting power, this, the top of the line Power Mac G5 model, is as good as it gets. Driven by not one but two 2 GHz Power PC G5 processors, 512 MB ultra-fast PC3200 DDR SDRAM memory per processor (expandable to a gargantuan 8 GB!), and an ATI RADEON 9600 Pro graphics card with 64 MB DDR SDRAM video memory, the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A certainly seems impressive. But those figures only begin to tell the story. For its latest desktop, Apple teamed with IBM to redesign its leading-edge CPU architecture. Accordingly, the new Power PC G5 is the world's first 64-bit processor. With two of these 2 GB powerhouses running in tandem -- each sporting an industry-leading 1 GHz frontside bus -- the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A delivers nearly double the throughout of a single 3 GHz Pentium 4-based machine and, according to Apple, runs standard Photoshop tests at 2.2 times the speed of a single 3 GHz Pentium. But there's more than raw power lurking inside the futuristic anodized aluminum case. For starters, Apple has compartmentalized the unit into four independent sections to direct appropriate airflow to each key component. A total of nine fans work to keep things cool, yet all are extremely low-speed. Thusly the Power Mac G5 M9032LL/A runs three times quieter than the previous Power Mac G4 enclosure. Apple has loaded the unit with data handling features, including a monstrous 160 GB 7200 RPM hard disk and a DVD-R/CD-RW combo drive (4X DVD write speed) through which you can archive information, play and burn audio CDs, enjoy the latest movies and record home videos. To help you transfer data to and from external peripherals such as optical drives and digital camcorders and cameras, the system also sports two high-speed FireWire 400 ports, one ultra-fast FireWire 800 port, three USB 2.0 ports and two USB 1.1 ports. Other key amenities include a convenient Apple Pro keyboard, an Apple Pro mouse, three available high-performance PCI-X slots for future expansion, and a broad array of multimedia and Internet software. Connectivity facilities include an integrated 10/100/1000BASE-T Ethernet port, a built-in 56K modem, and AirPort Extreme wireless support (with an AirPort Extreme card). Speakers and display are available separately. Reviews (24)
I actually appreciate the barebones nature of this machine, it allowed me to save money by pricewatching my memory instead of paying the out of box price. Try maxing out a Sony PC, or even a Dell out of the box, its way more money than if you just pop in some yourself. Compare this beauty to a Sony desktop, its every bit as slick and its actually usefully slick instead of just shiny to get you to pay more money. And seriosly, PC gamers are ruining the whole idea of computers as powerful tools, and Microsoft is doing a glorios job at promoting this. Win XP is THE video game platform for all the twenty somethings that should really just grow up. Big video graphics cards aren't even used by Windows except in games, OS X panther uses video hardware every chance it gets and enhances productivity. This machine is for work for Pete's sake, look at the price tag. If you're using this primarily for games, you simply have no respect for your dollar. Plain and simple. About OS X, I would pay 200-400 dollars extra just for this operating system. It is actually worth money to me, VS Win XP which is a dime a dozen. If the speed were the same or slower i would still want Panther, it is quite simply DESIRABLE. It makes me want to work, and it definitely promotes creativity. My PC is like creating inside a prison cell. Panther is like a summer cabin. Compare this to any similarly priced PC out of the box and you would see that there is little comparison. Compare this to a custom made PC, and you would have to admit that the case and cooling alone would have a market value of 400 bucks. Buy it barebones and add stuff if you're concerned about the bang for your buck. It's simply right for professionals to be open about these machines, Apple doesn't reverse engineer like Microsoft does... it actually comes up with things, and makes using a computer interesting again.
In my current firm, which is quite leading edge, we are now at about 75% pc based machines. The more experienced the designer, the more likely they are to have thrown in the towel on MAC. The fact is that for a given amount of money to spend on a system: $2,000; $2,500; $3000; $4,000, you name it, less or more, MAC is will deliver less performance, less upgradablity, and as anyone who has used panther (os x) knows (and this is incredible)...less stability. One example of how Apple has decided to treat us like fools is to equip this machine (and in the advertising copy breathless brag!) with 64 meg vidio card. Doesn't that say it all? I have spent years advocating Macs. All of us Apple fans have a hard time admitting it, but the truth is the entire G5 line is an overpriced insult. Price out what you will get in a pc for $3000, or even the $2600 you get this machine with the academic discount which you can get if you have a third cousin in grammer school (another insult is fixed pricing vs the "academic discount" option which rewards all apple buyers for lying). Look at the independent benchmarks (not the skewed ones where apple or its "friendly reviews have made with crippled win- pc's), compare them for the same money, Apple isn't slightly slower, it is way slower across the board. Don't even get me to start on the prices Apple charges for memory (the 1.8 dual comes with 256, that is just laughable, and here we have a $3,000 machine with only 512!!!).
