    Amazon.com Product Description

Whether editing your family photos, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1401NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, the SR1401NX has room to grow with an available expansion slot, 2 available PCI slots, 5 USB ports for connecting peripherals, and the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM. This desktop comes with a 40 GB hard drive, 256 MB of installed RAM, 2.66 GHz Intel Celeron processor, 48x CD writer, and a multi-format memory card reader. For a step up in price, the SR1410NX offers a faster Celeron processor, 80 GB hard drive, and a combo DVD/CD-RW drive.

    The Basics

    • Hard Drive: Since the focus is on affordability, the SR1401NX comes with just a 40 GB hard drive (7200 RPM). While this may have sounded gigantic at one time, it is one of the smallest hard drives you'll find in a desktop computer. That said, it offers more than enough room for home office productivity software, storing family photos, and a decent-sized digital audio library.
    • Processor: The Intel Celeron D 330 processor might not be as sexy as a Pentium, but it still gets your work done speedily enough. It has a 2.66 GHz speed with a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 256K L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
    • Memory: The 256 MB of installed RAM will get you started, but you'll want to add more to handle any kind of multimedia application and most business productivity suites. This desktop has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
    • CD/DVD Drive: This desktop includes a speedy CD burner, with 48x write/read and 32x rewrite speeds. While this won't play DVDs, you can use one of the 5.25-inch expansion slots to add an optional DVD drive.
    • Keyboard & Mouse: The SR1401NX comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections.
    Screen, Graphcs and Sound
The integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video/graphics card (with 64 MB of shared video memory) is adequate for streaming Internet video, but won't be enough for today's demanding immersive 3D games. It also features an integrated audio card and headhphone, microphone, and line-in jacks.

    Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1401NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), and three PCI slots (two available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

    • 5 USB 2.0 ports (1 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
    • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
    • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
    • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
    • 1 VGA monitor port
    • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

    Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Norton Internet Security 2005 (with 60 days of complimentary updates), InterMute SpySubtract Pro (with 60 days of complimentary updates), Microsoft Money 2005, Quicken 2005 New User Edition, Sonic RecordNow, Apple iTunes, Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, and MSN Encarta 2005.

    Dimensions and Weight
This desktop measures 15.35 x 7.17 x 16.54 inches (HxWxD) and weighs approximately 30 pounds.

    What's in the Box
The Presario SR1401NX desktop PC comes with a power cord, keyboard, and scroller mouse. It is backed by a one-year warranty for parts and labor from date of purchase, and it includes 90 days of toll-free software technical assistance. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1320NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, the SR1320NX has room to grow with the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM and a wide variety of peripherals via its seven USB 2.0 ports. It's also ready for your multimedia needs, with a dual layer DVD/CD burner and a multiformat memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats. Other features include an 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3100+ processor.

    The Basics

    • Hard Drive: Offering more than enough room for everyday computing needs and a decent-sized multimedia library, the 80 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is average compared to other desktop PCs in this range. You can boost your storage space by adding optional external hard drives via the USB 2.0 or Firewire ports.
    • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 1.8 GHz AMD Sempron 3100+ found in this desktop is compatible in speed with Intel's 2.9 GHz Celeron processor. It's speedy enough for everyday computing needs and running office productivity software, but won't be quite enough for higher-end video editing or 3D gaming. It also features a 1600 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 256 KB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
    • Memory: The 512 MB of installed RAM (PC2700) is adequate for running office productivity and audio software, but you'll want to take advantage of the roomy 2 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 1 GB)for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
    • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the SR1320NX multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CDR, 24x CDRW, and 40x CD-ROM ROM speeds.
    • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop PC comes with the Compaq Productivity keyboard and scroller mouse, both of which connect to the PS/2 ports on the back of the machine.
    Graphics and Sound
The SR1320NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board. The sound card uses the AC'97 (Audio Codec '97) standard (configurable to 6 channels of audio). The video/graphics card has up to 64 MB of shared video memory. It is suitable for good range of gaming graphics and multimedia video playback, but might not stack up for ultra-realistic 3-D PC games.

    Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1320NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (one available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

    • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
    • 1 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
    • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
    • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
    • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
    • 1 VGA monitor port
    • 1 microphone, 1 headphone
    • 1 line-out, and 1 line-in jack

2-0 out of 5 stars ok for playing music, games not a high power pc at all
I bought this pc to replace an e machines t 3085 that had a damaged motherboard. at first it seemed to be better and i have owned earlier compaqs that i loved. I have since repaired the t3085 and have them running side by side( I broke it to begin with not the fault of the manufacturer.) there is no comparison!!!
the e machines is faster smoother and has no problem burning discs, playing games, and in short doing all of the tasks that you would expect to be able to do.
the compaq features a faster burner but it will fail to burn
a dvd -r 1/3rd of the time while the emachines has yet to fail
once in the same time frame.

prices are similar and compaq does not seem to be the same quality name they once were. i would not buy one again! ... Read more

Whether editing your family photos, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1430NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs and is ready to take on multimedia tasks such as 3D gaming and video editing. This desktop comes with a huge 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, 2.93 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, dual-layer DVD-/+RW drive (which also burns CDs), and a multi-format memory card reader.

    • Hard Drive: The extra-large 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video.
    • Processor: Compaq amps up the processing power with the 2.93 GHz Intel Pentium 4 515J processor, which is more befitting this multimedia model than the Celeron processor found in its brethren. It has a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and large 1 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)

    Product Description

The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is a Windows-based terminal popularly referred to as a "thin client". A Windows-based terminal or thin client is a client device that connects over a network to a Windows NT Server running Windows 2000 or NT Terminal Server Edition or either of those operating systems with Citrix MetaFrame software running atop the server OS. This combination of client and server running a thin client solution is referred to as Thin Client Server Computing. But the thin client is just a part of that overall solution.A thin client Windows-based terminal only processes keyboard input and screen output, leaving all application processing and storage to the server. Compaq thin client solutions can allow companies to dramatically lower the costs associated with their client/server infrastructure. Unlike a traditional PC with high-speed processors and data storage, these terminals are optimized to act solely as "windows" to the server where users' applications and data reside. Instead of applications running on individual PCs, all applications are run from a single server, greatly simplifying the administration and support needed to run an IT department. While some knowledge workers truly need the processing power of a PC (such as engineers, designers, or financial analysts), many workers perform task-oriented, transactional functions (such as travel agents and call center operators), in environments that would be ideal for the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Although Compaq's expansive Presario S5000nx series of computers is generally intended for light- to medium-use situations where cost is the overriding factor, this model, the midlevel Presario S5300nx Desktop PC, is fast and versatile enough to go beyond the basics. Sporting an affordable price point, a far superior processor than its less costly siblings and lots of storage space, the Presario S300nx Desktop will efficiently run most every home and home office chore apart from advanced 3-D graphics and DVD burning.

The Presario S5300nx Desktop is driven by a snappy Intel Pentium 4 processor operating at 2.5 GHz. Compaq has added enough RAM memory for most single task and multitask situations –- 512 MB (upgradeable to 1 GB) –- and an integrated Intel Extreme Graphics controller with 64 MB of shared (not dedicated) video memory. Certainly the video chipset is the weak link here, and as such the system will need a video card upgrade for advanced 3-D applications.

To store and transfer your data and give you plenty of room for a full library of multimedia files, the Presario S5300nx Desktop is equipped with a massive 120 GB hard disk, a convenient 3.5-inch diskette drive, and a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive that supports CD burning and CD and DVD playing, but no DVD writing. The system features a variety of connectivity options, including serial and parallel ports, a 56K V.90 flex modem for low-speed communication, a high-speed 10-Mbps/100-Mbps Ethernet network port for high-speed LAN and Internet access, and a half-dozen fast USB 2.0 ports for plug and play peripherals. Compaq has not included a FireWire port (normally reserved for fast data downloads from digital camcorders). Monitor and speakers are sold separately, thus allowing you to customize your desktop setup from the many options available today. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Good with one MAJOR weakness
The Compaq Presario S5300NX is a nice computer. With Pentium 4 at 2.5G and 512M ram (exapndable to 1GB) it's got good speed. The 120GB hard drive provides plenty of space for all application and storage - and a CD burner in case you need more.
However, with that kind of power, it has one glaring weakness: It's Intel Integrated video Chipset (64MB). With no AGP expansion, the 5300NX slows 3-D graphic-using programs way down. For example, Command and Conquer Generals (which states a minimum 32M card) runs very slowly. As I said, the annoying thing is that Compaq (HP) didn't even provide an AGP expansion slot - making it virtually impossible to fix this achilles heel - even if you wanted to.

Normally, I would have given it 4 stars, but with all the power it has, the inability to do even a fair job at handling graphics that most older computers can, is an unforgivable oversight.

4-0 out of 5 stars There are Strengths and Weaknesses...
The Compaq Presario S5300NX is a unit that has its ups and downs which will be detailed below. However, since its strengths outweigh its weaknessess, the Presario deserves a 4 star rating.

    STRENGTHS:

*Combination of DVD and CD-RW drives - A Tower which features only one drive (i.e. the RW drive) defeats the purpose of the RW drive. With dual drives, you can now burn much faster.

    * Appearance - Mostly black with a gray front panel it is a machine (a la Dell) that looks like it means business.

    * Front side USB 2.0 - The Presario features 2 Front side USB 2.0 prots as well as two in the rear. Front Side USB ports make it much more conevient to plug in Jump Drives and other transient USB devieces. In addition, there is a convenient pull down access panel to hide the USB ports when not in use.

    * Pentium 2.5 Ghz - The 2.5 Pentium 4 provides more than enough juice to power any applications you can throw at it.

    * 120 GB Hard Drive =- Provides plenty of storage space for files.

    * Quality keyboard - Finally... a name brand computer which features a quality, non-throwaway keyboard.

    * 3 1/2 disk drive - Yup, it's almost a relic... but not quite and the Presario has it.

    * Quiet running - The Presario runs quiet.

    * On-board Intel extreme Graphics - The on-board intel extreme graphics can handle the very latest in graphics requirements for todays games.

*Quality motherboard - Many name brand computerscome with cheap motherboards. The Presario however, features the ASUS mother board.

    WEAKNESSES:

    * No AGP expansions slot - There is no upwards expansion of the graphics capabilities of the Presario.

    * Minimum expansion slots - Again, provides minimum opporuntity for expansion of the Presario which limits its upgrade potential.

    * Clumsy tower design - It takes some effort to open the tower in order to upgrade the machine. In addition to removing the side panel, one must also remove the front panel.

    * Limited pre-packaged software - You get Windows XP... and not much else.

All in all, the S5300NX is a complete machine, but it better be since there is not much room for upgrades. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Compaq's Presario SR1210NX is one of the least expensive yet most cost-effective desktop PCs available today, a perfect fit for a wide variety of users--from financially strapped students to families with multimedia needs. While fitting within your budget is a high priority, the SR1210NX is well apportioned with an 80 GB hard drive, 2.66 GHz Intel Celeron D processor, a video/graphics card with 64 MB of shared memory, a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive, ultra-fast USB 2.0 ports, and a multi-format memory card reader.

    The Basics

    • Hard Drive: The 80 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) is small in comparison to other desktop PCs in this range, and certainly smaller than you'll need if editing a lot of digital video. It does have more than adequate storage for all your documents and a good-sized library of digital photos and MP3s.
    • Processor: While not as strong a performer as the Intel Pentium 4, the Intel Celeron D 330 processor helps make this package affordable. The 2.66 GHz speed is powerful enough for Internet, home office, educational and productivity applications. It also features a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 256 KB L2 cache.
    • Memory: The installed 256 MB of RAM (PC2700) is small compared to other desktops in this class, but it helps keep this package within your budget range. That said, you'll want to upgrade to at least 512 MB. The SR1210NX has a 1 GB maximum (2 x 512 MB).
    • CD/DVD Drive: The combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive can write and read CDs at 48x and rewrite at 32x speeds. It can read DVDs at 16x.
    • Keyboard & Mouse: The SR1210NX comes with Compaq productivity keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
    Sound and Graphics
The SR1210NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board.

For expansion, the SR1210NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), two 3.5-inch bays (one available), and three PCI slots (two available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

    • 5 USB 2.0 ports (1 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
    • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
    • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
    • 1 VGA monitor port
    • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
    • 1 microphone, 1 line-out, and 1 line-in jack
    • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, Smaredia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digitial, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems). It also has a hot-swappable bay for adding an optional optical drive or second battery.

    Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition operating system, and it also features Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents). Other preloaded software includes Quicken New User Edition 2004, Norton Antivirus 2004 (with 60-day LiveUpdate subscription) and Personal Firewall 2004, Adobe Acrobat Reader, Encarta Encyclopedia 2004 Standard Edition, RecordNow 7.2 (for burning CDs), WinDVD SE 5.0 (for DVD playback), Adobe Photoshop Album (starter edition), and Apple iTunes.

This inexpensive Deskpro EX model would be suitable as a low-end business system, though it ships with Windows 98 rather than the far more stable and reliable Windows 2000. That's no doubt because it comes with only 64 MB of memory. Amazon.com Product Description

Maximize your multimedia experience with the Compaq Presario SR1030NX desktop PC, featuring both DVD and CD writers and multi-format memory card reader. The SR1030NX also features a huge 160 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a fast 2.16 GHz AMD Athlon XP 3000+ processor. For even more speed and storage capacity, check out the Compaq SR1050NX (2.2 GHz Athlon XP 3200+) or SR1090NX (64-bit, 2.2 GHz AMD Athlon 3400+)--both with 200 GB hard drives.

    The Basics

    • Hard Drive: The extra-large 160 GB Ultra DMA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos, and MP3 collection.
    • Processor: The 2.16 GHz AMD Athlon XP 3000+ processor offers a high level of performance that's equivalent to a 3.0 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor--speedy enough for PC gaming, graphic design software, and multimedia creation. It also features a 333 MHz front-side bus (FSB) speed and a 512 KB L2 cache.
    • Memory: The SR1030NX comes with a 512 MB built-in memory (1 x 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 333 MHz)--a good start for power users. It has a 2 GB maximum memory expansion (2 x 1024 MB).
    • CD/DVD Drive: This desktop PC comes with two optical drives: a CD-ROM (48x read speed) and a DVD+RW (for writing data and video files from your camcorder to discs). The combo drive has 16x write, 10x re-write, 40x read speeds for CDs--which is slow in comparison to other desktop models of this caliber--while the DVD+RW portion has 4x write, 2.4x rewrite, and 8x playback speeds (DVD movie discs require 8x). It's compatible with the DVD+RW format, one of two formats for rewriteable DVDs.
    • Keyboard & Mouse: The SR1030NX comes with a HP Home Professional keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
    Sound and Graphics
The SR1030NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board.

For expansion, the SR1030NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (none available), two 3.5-inch bays (none available), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP 8x slot (available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

    • 7 USB 2.0 ports (3 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
    • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
    • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
    • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
    • 1 VGA monitor port
    • 1 serial port for older peripherals such as early PDAs
    • 1 microphone, 1 headphone, and 1 line-in jack in the front
    • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, Smaredia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digitial, and XD Picture Card

4-0 out of 5 stars Compaq see's the light
This is the first new computer I have bought from a manufacturer in all the years since the IBM PS/2 systems first arrived. I have always upgraded or built my own from components. Why the change you may ask. Its due to the fact that this machine has two unusual features .

First off it has completely standard hardware and the case is among the simplest to access. The interior is well organized and cleanly laid out. All the expansions slots are easy to use and the case can be entered without even a screwdriver. This is a major change for Compaq. A large number of their previous systems had little modifications to the ATX form that made hardware changes difficult for the end user.

The second reason is that the included hardware has a great price to power ratio. Nothing in it is unworkable or even truly bargain basement in quality. The included DVD writer truly closed the deal for me.

Also of note is the software bundle. It includes a few standard applications and some media management software. Nothing to special it would seem. And that to is a plus as Compaq used to install a plague of customized software that caused endless issues for me in the past. Small bits of custom software remain but are now easily uninstalled or disabled.

The systems includes every port needed for easy device connection except a standard joystick connector. This isn't much of a fault in this age of USB devices.

For the devoted non-Microsoft crowd I can proudly say that after a little bit of effort I managed to resize the NTFS partition on the installed 160 gig hard drive. This system now gladly dual boots mandrake Linux 9.2 without any issues.

I would suggest only two affordable changes depending on your needs. One is if you are going to do any gaming add a AGP video card. The integrated savage video will serve the email and video watching crowd well. But gaming seems to be very limited on it. The addition of a left over Geforce 5200 turned my system into a acceptable games station . Also the on-board audio is good but not great. Add a SoundBlaster live value if you have one laying around its easy and well worth it.

One last design feature to mention is the fact that it has front ports for most any device. This truly comes in handy for those who love their USB cameras and joysticks. As well as any devotees of 1394 fire wire and the various flash memory card standards. It even includes microphone and headphone jacks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Alot Of Computer For The Money!
I purchased the Compaq SR1030NX after looking at a number of other computers. I decided on this computer because it has a large 160GB Ultra DMA Hard Drive, a relitively fast AMD Athlon XP Processor (3000 + (2.16Hz), 512 MB RAM, DVD Writer/CD-Writer Combo, floppy disc drive and built in front access 9-in-1 memory card reader, USB 2.0 & Firewire Ports plus the ability to upgrade. The SR1030NX is a handsome unit and performed flawlessy for me. The CD Writer is a bit slow as it took about 8 minutes to make an exact copy of an 80 minute cd. Files and folders can be recorded on CDR's and CDRW's with ease. The DVD section of the SR1030NX performed flawlessly and the picture quality playing DVD's is outstanding (using the 7550 Compaq monitor). The only complaint I have is that you must create your own recovery discs (6 CDR's are needed or 1 DVD) as Compaq does not supply them for you in the box. It took me about 45 minutes to create the discs! There's also an abundance of software downloaded such as Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Record Now for creating your own music or data cd's and dvd's, InterVideo Win DVD Creator for editing digital home movies and recording them to DVD, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Money 2004 and Microsoft Encarta Online with a 1-year trial subscription. You also get a 60 day trial of Microsoft's Office 2003 which I felt should have been given to you with the trial two months. Kinda cheap on Compaq's part! For the money you get alot of computer and I highly recommend this unit. ... Read more

    Amazon.com Product Description

Whether you're e-mailing family and friends, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1300NX offers all the power and versatility you need for a home desktop PC. Focusing on affordability, the SR1300NX has room to grow with the ability to add up to 1 GB of RAM and a wide variety of peripherals via its seven USB 2.0 ports. It comes loaded with a 60 GB hard drive, 256 MB of installed RAM, 2.0 GHz AMD Sempron 3000+ processor, a CD burner, and a multiformat memory card reader that's compatible with today's most popular digital camera formats.

    The Basics

    • Hard Drive: While it offers more than enough room for everyday computing needs and a decent-sized multimedia library, the 60 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is small compared to other desktop PCs in this range. However, you can boost your storage space by adding optional external hard drives via the USB 2.0 or Firewire ports.
    • Processor: A lower-end cousin to AMD's XP processor line, the 2.0 GHz AMD Sempron 3000+ found in this desktop is compatible in speed with Intel's 2.8 GHz Celeron processor.
    • Memory: The installed 256 MB (PC2700) is underpowered for today's demanding office productivity and multimedia applications and immersive 3D games. You'll want to take advantage of the 1 GB total RAM capability (2 x 512 MB); however, maxing this out requires the replacement of the installed 256 MB DIMM.
    • CD/DVD Drive: To keep this desktop as affordable as possible, the SR1300NX comes with just a CD-RW drive, which can burn audio, video, and data files to CD (instead of a combo DVD/CD drive). It has a fast 48x read/write speed and a 32x rewrite speed.
    • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop PC comes with the Compaq Productivity keyboard and scroller mouse, both of which connect to the PS/2 ports on the back of the machine.
    Graphics and Sound
The SR1300NX features audio and video cards that are integrated into the computer's main board.

For expansion, the SR1300NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (one available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), three PCI slots (two available), and one AGP slot (available).

It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005 (with 60 days of LiveUpdate),Norton Personal Firewall 2004 (60-day security update subscription), RecordNow, iTunes, PC Doctor, and SpySubtract.

    Amazon.com Product Description

How much speed do you need? If power and topnotch performance are what you crave, check out the Compaq Presario 6024US desktop. As a member of Compaq's cost-efficient 6000 series, the 6024US does not include speakers or a monitor, thus allowing you to customize the configuration of your own audio-video setup. It does, however, have everything else to make even your most taxing programs take flight.

From the ground up, the 6024US is built to impress. The unit is driven by a muscular 1.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with 32 KB of Level 1 pipeline burst cache, 256 KB of Level 2 pipeline burst cache and a 400 MHz system bus speed. Graphic processing is handled by a robust 64 MB nVidia GeForce2 MX200, and system memory is preconfigured at a massive 512 MB of 266 MHz DDR DRAM (expandable to 1 full gigabyte). Make no mistake--this is a seriously powerful machine for seriously demanding users.

Yet for all its hot-rod speed, the 6024US is also plenty roomy. Compaq has included a massive 80 GB hard drive for long-term storage and program installs, and a 3.5-inch diskette drive for smaller files and quick backups. It has installed a superfast 24-speed (write) CD-RW drive to make quick work of any data or audio recording, and a 16-speed DVD drive for error-free viewing of your favorite movies. And if you ever do want to add another drive, the unit's spare expansion bay is ready to accommodate.

The 6024US is convenient, too. Its 23.8-pound enclosure features a variety of input and output connections, including four USB ports, a parallel and serial port, line-in and line-out audio ports, a microphone-in jack and a 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port for LAN connectivity and high-speed Internet browsing. Its 56K modem delivers low-speed Internet and e-mail support for those who prefer to surf at a more leisurely pace, and its keyboard offers a number of one-touch multimedia, e-mail, and Web buttons to help streamline day-to-day computing tasks. Installed software includes the Home Edition of the Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Money 2001, Microsoft Works 6.0, Quicken Financial Center/Quicken New User Edition and Intervideo's WinDVD movie player.

Certainly not for computer users on a budget or those who'd rather not supply a separate monitor and speaker system, the Compaq Presario is nevertheless an extremely capable machine for virtually any 2-D and 3-D application. ... Read more

I should admit that I am far from an expert on computers. I picked up this one for about two hundred dolars. I had to have a modem installed, and a new video card to play my copy of Freedom Force. But it runs quietly and (reasonably) fast, so I have no complaints about it. ... Read more
