Amazon.com Product Description

The easy-to-use HP m7070n Media Center Photosmart PC is the complete home PC system that delivers more entertainment choices, and brings them together in one place with easy access from anywhere in the room. With the m7070n, you can watch, record, and pause live TV programming as well as schedule the PC to record upcoming episodes or entire series. It's powered by a blazing fast, hyper-threaded Pentium 4 processor and Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. It features a roomy 250 GB hard drive, 1 GB of installed RAM (4 GB maximum), a multiformat memory card reader, a multiformat, dual-layer DVD/CD burner and included Image Zone photo editing and management software.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The massive 250 GB Serial ATA hard drive (7200 RPM) offers a wealth of storage space, perfect for storing a vast multimedia collection or for editing digital video.
  • Processor: The hyper-threaded 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 640 processor allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system, helping to deliver faster transistors and increased performance. It also features a large 2 MB L2 cache and a blazingly fast 800 MHz front-side bus speed, which measures how fast a processor and the main memory communicate. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)

A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.

  • Memory: The 1 GB of installed RAM (PC3200) is a good start for this multimedia-centric desktop PC, so you'll want to take advantage of the ultra-roomy 4 GB of total RAM capacity (2 x 2 GB)for such multimedia needs as video editing and immersive 3D gaming.
  • CD/DVD Drive: Offering the latest in DVD writing technology, the m7070n multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer DVD+R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features16x DVD+R, 8x DVD-R, 4x DVD+/-RW, 2.4x DVD+R DL, 16x DVD-ROM, 40x CDR, 24x CD-RW, and 40x CD-ROM ROM speeds. It features the LightScribe direct disc labeling feature, which enables CD, DVD images and disk labels to be permanently etched onto discs--eliminating messy marker-scrawled labels. This desktop also has an additional 16x DVD-ROM drive.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This desktop comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and optical mouse (both PS/2).
Screen, Graphics and Sound
The ATI Radeon X300 SE is a strong performer, powerful enough to run one large virtual screen across two displays. It features 128 MB of dedicated video RAM, S-Video and the higher-fidelity DVI connections out, and PCI Express x16 support, which enables graphics to process faster. It also features the integrated Intel High Definition audio chip (Azalia), featuring THX certification and 8 channels for full Dolby 5.1/6.1/7.2 surround sound with Dolby Pro Logic IIx.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
The m7070n has three PCI expansion slots (all occupied), two external 5.25 drive bays (occupied), 1 internal 3.5 drive bay (occupied), one HP Personal Media Drive bay (available), three standard PCI slots, one PCI x16 Express slot (occupied), and the following external ports:

  • 6 USB 2.0 ports (4 in rear, 3 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link; 1 front and 1 back) ports for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • Composite video, S-Video, and audio inputs
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It includes an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
The pre-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is essentially Windows XP Professional Edition with a variety of tools to help you to create, organize, and enjoy digital media ranging from music to home movies to photo slide shows. Additionally, it enables you to control your television with the included remote and record and pause programs (much like a DVR--or digital video recorder--such as Tivo or ReplayTV). With the 250 GB hard drive, you'll be able to record and store up to 180 hours of video programming. It's compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV and antenna inputs, and it includes an FM tuner.

The included HP Image Zone Plus photo and imaging software makes it easy to organize, edit, share, print, protect, and store your photos and video clips. Organize and find your photos easily by timeline, keywords, and/or location using the unique photo-globe mapping tool. Remove red eye and fix other common problems. Share your photos quickly via e-mails that include thumbnails with links to the full-sized images--without downloading time-consuming attachments.

Other preloaded software includes InterVideo WinDVD Creator and WinDVD SE player, Muvee autoProducer, Apple iTunes, Sonic RecordNow, Norton AntiVirus 2005, Microsoft Works 8.0, MSN Encarta Standard, Microsoft Money, and Quicken 2004 New User Edition.

Dimensions and Weight
This desktop measures 15.16 x 7.6 x 15.54 inches (HxWxD).

Product Description

Share one PC with up to 10 users! DoubleSight offers the world's first terminal device that does not requrie a CPU, hard-drive, or CD-ROM unlike your typical PCs. With the exclusive UTMA (Ultra Thin Multi-Access) technology, the PCExpanion and Neotus allow you to expand your existing PC to up to 10 computer terminals. Because your existing PC is being under utilized (see image above) PCExpanion and Neotus are programmed to access the host PC's excess computing power. By utilizing Windows XP/2000's multi-user feature with UTMA technology from Ncomputing, both PCExpanion and Neotus can operate like a separate PC terminal without decreasing the overall performance of either the host PC or each PCExpanion terminal. Therefore, each terminal unit can run any applications from the host PC independently and securely. Cost effective: Save up to 80% of your hardware cost versus buying a P4 or equivalent PC, PCExpanion gives any office or home users the opportunity to expand an existing host PC easily and affordably. No maintenance required: You only have to maintain and upgrade the host PC, PCExpanion requires no hardware maintenance, only occasional software updates. Compatibility: PCExpanion will run Windows based applications on your host PC: internet browsing, email, office suites, most games and much more. (except 3D games or applications) Simultaneous Windows operation: Both host PC and PCExpanion terminals can run independently and execute same application programs separately. S ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Item
The possibilities here are endless. At home with the help of a Netgear WGE101 wireless bridge you could put one of these in every room and run it off your pc connected to the Internet. At the office, they make great systems for training, data entry or people that just need to read thier email or write a word document.

I have had one here in my office for a few months now running off a Windows 2000 pc with 1.2Ghz AMD 512MB memory and plain old IDE HD. Everyone that comes in the door plays with it one way in one way or the other and I have seen no impact on my windows workstation during these times. Another very neat thing is that you can hav all your windows open, turn the thing off, un plug it, plug it back in somewere else on the network and when it loads everything is still there. Which to me indicates that this is not a thin client device. It is a mutli-user remote desktop. At 189.00 or less, We plan on putting one everwhere a simple pc is needed. I did have initial install problems as well because I let it check the Internet for a newer version during the install and it hosed the install process up. So don't do that. Support was little help either. I just erased it all and started over not using the Internet check and it all works fine.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for offices looking to upgrade
Any type of business can take advantage of this product. This thing is small and obviously dead quite. I have been stress testing one of these and there are a few things that need to be fixed in the future.

Video is awful, and it is not the system or network they are being served from. My network peaked at 25% with a full screen video trying to be played with a PCExpanion, CPU was 10%, and more then 512MB of RAM free.

Audio works fine no stuttering or pauses, but it is low quality and there is a bit of noise coming through.

The refresh of the screen could be bumped up just a little as well, but only because I am expecting quite a bit from this unit. People will have no problem typing or scrolling through pages and doing other office work.

I imagine these problems could be solved by them just upgrading the CPU or code in the current system. The audio controller should just completely be replaced as it is of low quality for a $199 US product.

Now that the bad is out of the way, this unit is actually quite good for a business environment. The quality of the screen output is actually quite good and is better then XP's remote desktop. The network utilization is less then 1% in most cases peaking at 5%. The CPU and RAM are the same obviously as running it locally, so if your PC is up to date and has enough RAM you will be set.

The keyboard and mouse respond quickly and is no comparison to the much more sluggish remote desktop.

I believe DoubleSight was actually being quite conservative with limiting the total number to 10 units. If you setup a XP machine with duel CPU's and at least 10K RPM drives with 4GB of RAM, 1Gb LAN, you could easily serve at least 30 machines and I think it could hit 50 off of one machine.

With all that said I hope they upgrade the processing unit in this thing to play video, as this could sneak into the home as well with MS Media Center PC's serving up extenders why not have them serve a few of these things as well.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good idea, badly executed
Maybe someone else who bought one of these had better luck than me, but after 3 hours wanking around on it, I finally threw in the towel, and decided to return it. Here's what happened:

Followed the directions in the documentation. After installing the terminal server software on my system, the first thing that I noticed is that my AthonXP 2500+ system with 512MB took about twice as long to boot and ran sluggishly thereafter. Getting the terminal server management window to come up took a minute and a half, and after any little adjustment to a setting, there was a long delay where the mouse cursor would disappear when moved over the management window, while the software very slowly responded.

The next problem was a message from the terminal server software complaining about a "user.exe" mismatch, with instructions telling me either to uninstall my latest Windows Update patches, or download the latest fix from the Ncomputing site. After downloading the updated termserv fix file, the termserv download management program would hang. Canceling the download program would make the downloaded fix file disappear. After several attempts trying different save locations, filenames, etc. I finally resorted to killing the download manager with TaskMan, which left the downloaded fix file in place--this allowed me to install the updated terminal server software.

The result of that was that my host PC didn't complete its boot upon restart. Held down the power button until my host machine powered down, then restarted again. This time my system booted, but the speed was even slower, although the error message went away.

(As an aside, the manual states that there may be times when their terminal server software won't be kept up to date with the latest Windows Update patches, potentially leaving you in the situation of having to choose between running the latest security fixes, or your terminal. That made me uncomfortable.)

After finally getting the terminal server software to run without obvious errors on my host PC, I spent another frustrating chunk of time trying to get the terminal itself to work. Even after assigning static IP addresses as instructed to both the terminal and the PC host, the terminal never was able to make a connection to the host. It would see that the host exsited, but could not connect to it. This was over a standard 10/100 switch.

3 hours horsing around with all this was the limit. I never bothered to call DoubleSight's tech support, I just unregistered and unloaded the terminal server software from my host PC (which at least uninstalled properly) and repacked the terminal for return. If it doesn't at least work in a basic way out of the box, I'm not into wasting my time paying to be someone's beta tester.

Summary and recommendation: Steer clear of this one. With new low-end PCs hitting $350 for a decent system, $200 is a lot to pay for something like this. If it was reliable (or if it even worked at all) and cost $75, it might be a good value, but as it is, even if the terminal could be made to log on, it's just not worth the performance hit on the host system. Just get a new standalone low-end PC instead. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice eMachine
Intel Celeron D processor 335 (2.8 GHz)
256KB L2 Cache
533MHz FSB
256MB of PC2700 Dual Channel DDR SDRAM (expandable to 2GB)
Intel Extreme Graphics 2 with 64MB of shared DDR memory (memory is taken from the main system)
AC '97 Audio
80GB HDD
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive - (write speeds) up to 48x CD-R & 32x CD-RW
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive - (read speeds) up to 16x DVD-ROM & 48x CD-ROM
56k v.90 Fax Modem
Ports - 10/100 Ethernet, 6 USB 2.0 (2 front / 4 back), 1 VGA, 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, & 2 PS/2 (keyboard & mouse)
Slots - 3 PCI (2 available)
Bays - 4 3.5" (3 available) & 2 5.25" (1 available)

Ok, looking at those, unless you know a lot about computers, you probably have no clue what any of this means.

Intel Celeron D processor 335 (2.8 GHz)

A processor demands on speed and workness of programs. If you are a big gamer, the T3882 may not be very good for you. However, if you are using this to just surf the web, burn CDs, use Microsoft Word, etc., then this computer is perfect.

256KB L2 Cache

I honestly have no clue.

533MHz FSB

This is good. The processor speed is fast, so this should open a program in a matter of 3 seconds. This is excellent for impatient people.

256MB of PC2700 Dual Channel DDR SDRAM (expandable to 2GB)

I would expand the memory. This could make programs run slower if you are using more than 5 programs at a time, which could easily freeze your computer.

Intel Extreme Graphics 2 with 64MB of shared DDR memory (memory is taken from the main system)

This is probably the biggest positive of the computer. This means you have an excellent screen at all times. Games will look more real, and programs will look more stand-out.

AC '97 Audio

This is very good. The audio (using the supplied eMachines speakers) is very great sounding, featuring big bass and clear treble.

80GB HDD

This is excellent. For this, you can store thousands of files.

CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive - (write speeds) up to 48x CD-R & 32x CD-RW
CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive - (read speeds) up to 16x DVD-ROM & 48x CD-ROM

This is excellent. Though you cannot burn DVDs, you can watch them with PowerDVD (installed on all systems). You can make complications, and listen to music on the drive. All in all, if you enjoy entertainment, this computer is excellent.

56k v.90 Fax Modem

If you use a telephone line for your internet, you can use it on this computer.
Ports - 10/100 Ethernet, 6 USB 2.0 (2 front / 4 back), 1 VGA, 1 Serial, 1 Parallel, & 2 PS/2 (keyboard & mouse)

If you have a DSL or broadband connection, the T3882 has an ethernet cable line installed as well. The T3882 also features a mouse, and a multimedia keyboard (very nicely made keyboard, with easy access to Internet Explorer "the internet").
Slots - 3 PCI (2 available)
Bays - 4 3.5" (3 available) & 2 5.25" (1 available)

More connections for optional hardware.

Also, one moe thing, I purchased the bundle pack with the monitor included. The item at amazon.com is not the bundle pack, but the bundle (featuring the eView monitor) can be found at Best Buy and CompUSA. The monitor is very nice. Though it is a CRT monitor (with a big back), it is a flat screen monitor, which is great for games and movies.

Overall, the T3882 isn't the fastest computer, it is a very nice computer with tons of features anyone can enjoy. Recommended.

Amazon.com Product Description

Meet your new digital entertainment center--the HP Pavilion m490n Media Center desktop PC. In addition to offering a central library for your CD library and easy video editing, the m490n can also act as a TV and a personal video recorder (PVR), a la Tivo, as well as an FM tuner. The m490n is powered by the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2004 operating system (compatible with cable, digital cable, satellite TV, and antenna). It also features a remote control, fast 8x DVD+RW burner, GeForce FX 5200 video card, a ultra-massive 250 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and multi-format memory card reader.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The huge 250 GB Ultra IDE hard drive (7200 RPM) offers more than enough storage for all your documents, digital photos (approximately 250,000 2-megapixel images) and video (approximately 13.5 hours of .avi video), and MP3 collection (up to 3,000 CDs).
  • Processor: The top-of-the-line 3.4 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading technology (which allows a single CPU system to behave in some aspects like a dual-CPU system--see more in Tech Talk section below) is one of the fastest processors currently available on the market. What's in the Box

Tech Talk
Hyper-Threading: A Hyper-Threading processor helps a PC to run multiple demanding applications at the same time. This technology enables the processor to execute two threads (a part of a program) in parallel, boosting performance during key high-drain procedures. This results in more efficient software performance (such as faster reaction times in gaming applications) and enhanced multitasking.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of best
I am very happy with this HP media Center. What more can I ask? I can watch TV, record TV same time if I wanted to by pushing the record button on my remote control.

1-0 out of 5 stars At your own risk
This whole MediaCenter serie still needs a lot of improvements. The computer is decently priced but the applications are not all integrated with the MS MediaCenter. The MC application is often buggy and often crashes. It also makes use of additional external apps very hard. The motherboard on mine was faulty and made the computer unable to reboot after 2 weeks. Even the front bezel was defective. I noticed that the same problem was noticeable on demos in stores. Also, don't expect external soundcard or video card to be compatible...i learned it the hard way with my creative card.

To top all this, HP Support is mediocre at best. They ask you to ship them your computer and return it back to you a week later with no comments, no names of repair person, and even in my case missing parts that got stolen. You won't know what they tried to repair and just hope they didn't wipe your hard disk for no reason. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars horrible
this IS the worse computer ever. I've had problems with this thing since day 1. Click on a file...yeah..be patient..only take about 5 minutes for it to pop up. and the damn thing freezes all the time..my shut down won't even work sometimes so i have to turn it off by hand, which can corrupt files (happened once..had to restart my whole computer) they say the Blaster worm is actually a worm but i think its just a glitch in the system cause i had it AGAIN after i restarted it, i've had troubles just to get on here and write this review because of all the annoying glitches and slowness of it. i dont even have 1/2 of my hard drive filled..ive checked for viruses, and i defraged and cleaned it up..so dont say its going slow becuz $hit on my computer..please steer away from this thing, go get a good brand..such as a sony..thats what im getting next a Vaio

bye-bye

1-0 out of 5 stars Very bad service
I bought an e-machines computer 3 months back and have had all sorts of problems with this computer in 3 months. I have been very unhappy the way I have been dealt with. I just talked to a guy call Dustin (or Justin) who would not tell me his real name and said Dustin in the corporate office is all I need to know. He also said there is no one else I could speak to and he had no supervisor (It all ended at him is what he said). He was extremely arrogant and had no tact to talk to a customer who has been frustrated by a bad product.

Stay away from e-machines

1-0 out of 5 stars bad service and low quality
I purchased a T2542 emachine® on 1 November 2003. The first computer had an Ethernet card that was defective out of the box. I called the technical service group at emachines. They recommended that I return this computer and get a new one - I did.

Approximately 3 weeks later, the power supply of the new computer stopped working. I called technical service again; they had a short (under 30 seconds) wait time. I was told that a new power supply could be sent and I could handle the repair (they said it was easy - they are probably right). Anyway, I was going out of town and said that I would request the part when I returned (I did). Four days later - no part.

So I called technical service again and they said that they didn't know why it didn't ship. They would put me on the top of the list but couldn't guarantee when or if a new part would be shipped in the next week. I asked to speak with a manager. Their management also told me that they have no control over distribution or shipping and I would have to just wait. When I asked to speak to the head manager, I was not allowed too. They gave me the corporate office number and said that was all they could do.

I have owned my emachine for 6 weeks and it has only worked for ½ of this time. This computer was inexpensive, but not worth the savings. The service and customer care is below standard and I question the ethics of the management organization. I would recommend that you do not purchase this computer.

5-0 out of 5 stars My new Kickin' Computer
I've been waiting years to buy a new computer and finally bought this one over the weekend. It's a really good buy. However, if you buy it in an actual Circuit City, you will get $350 in rebates with the monitor and printer included. This ends up with a actual purchase price around $390.

The computer itself is fast, and easy to use. Note that because it does not have the absolute latest versions of Windows XP and Norton Antivirus, you MUST register your virus software FIRST and then download the blaster worm patches from Microsoft. My computer had been infected in the first hour of use. After all was downloaded though it was fine.

Check out the Big Fix feature eMachines offers. It's very helpful. ... Read more

Asin: B00006BB6C
Catlog: CE
Manufacturer: Compaq
US | Canada | United Kingdom | Germany | France | Japan

Product Description

The Compaq Evo Thin Client T20 is a Windows-based terminal popularly referred to as a "thin client". A Windows-based terminal or thin client is a client device that connects over a network to a Windows NT Server running Windows 2000 or NT Terminal Server Edition or either of those operating systems with Citrix MetaFrame software running atop the server OS. This combination of client and server running a thin client solution is referred to as Thin Client Server Computing. But the thin client is just a part of that overall solution.A thin client Windows-based terminal only processes keyboard input and screen output, leaving all application processing and storage to the server. Compaq thin client solutions can allow companies to dramatically lower the costs associated with their client/server infrastructure. Unlike a traditional PC with high-speed processors and data storage, these terminals are optimized to act solely as "windows" to the server where users' applications and data reside. Instead of applications running on individual PCs, all applications are run from a single server, greatly simplifying the administration and support needed to run an IT department. While some knowledge workers truly need the processing power of a PC (such as engineers, designers, or financial analysts), many workers perform task-oriented, transactional functions (such as travel agents and call center operators), in environments that would be ideal for the Compaq Evo Thin Client T20. ...
