1-0 out of 5 stars The bottom of the barrell
Emachines are the worst on the market. I regret having bought mine. The computers malfunction often, and they have terrible customer service. The DVD & CD burners work seemingly when they want to, and half your time will be spent waiting while the computer is confused and figuring out what it's doing. If you want speed & reliability, don't get their products. I'm a writer, and have decided to transfer all my material to another unit before the Big One happens and I'm forced to turn its guts into sculpture.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't Let The Size Fool You
While this machine may look small, don't think that it is not powerful. I have had this computer for about two weeks now and am very satisfied with it. It is very user friendly and would be a great computer for the office or kids to play on. I have had about five different computers in my life and have liked this model the most. It comes with many built in software programs and office tools. If there was one drawback to this computer, it would have to be game controller. This computer was not meant to play the latest 3D games, but it's other features make up for that. I would recommend this computer to anyone. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

If you're looking for a system that doesn't have a lot of whistles and bells but is a good general-use computer, check out eMachines' eTower Desktop. It features a 1 GHz Celeron processor, 128 MB of RAM, a 20 GB hard disk, a CD-RW drive, an Intel Direct 3-D graphics card, and a 56K modem. However, it does come loaded with Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft's new operating system that combines the stability of Windows 2000 with better support for peripherals and games, plus a new user interface. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Effective little machine
Got this machine for myself Christmas 2001 as a bundle for $560 after rebates at a store in Tucson. Admittedly I've upgraded it quite a bit, but you can't beat the efficiency for the price. I wanted a cheap machine with potential to upgrade, as I've found this is a cheaper method than buying a packed system. For downloading and light application processing the 1Ghz Celeron easily does the job. I've now added 256mb of ram, 60gb hard drive storage, an ethernet card, and a dvd player. All the upgrades cost me $319 with free shipping right here on Amazon.com. I got my new Linksys cable modem and router here too for less than $100 dollars a piece. The machine has responded beautifully to the upgrades and I have since made it the workhorse of my home network. Overall I give it 4 stars because any company that sells windows XP with 128mb ram doesn't deserve 5. Any serious user would tell you the same, but if you have some patience when browsing through folders and such you'll be fine with the 128. And the eMachines tech support is a joke, but with this computer you shouldn't have to contact them with any hardware issues. Well, you can't beat the capabilities for the listed price and you can't beat my machine for ... after upgrades ANYWHERE!

5-0 out of 5 stars fantastic value for a great price
I bought this system as a bundle with monitor and printer from Best Buy for $479 and it's been incredible! Better than I expected and I even took my savings and added the extended warranty so I could have it serviced locally rather than shipping it to the manufacturer (one e-machines drawback). I just have to watch the CD-RW to make sure it doesn't get too warm. (I was forewarned this is an e-machines drawback) I did get a good response when I called their customer service after I did not receive my rebate--they were friendly and responded right away and did not keep me on hold for a long time--and I did finally receive my rebate! It burns great sounding CDs, and XP has been great--so if you just need an all-purpose system, this is definitely for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars bang for your buck
I bought the whole system with a yr of msn free for 499.00.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hunk of Garbage
I have had nothing but problems with my E-Machine. This was the first computer I bought. Actually it was a well intentioned gift from my mom, who knows nothing about computers.
This piece of garbage gave me troubel from the get-go. I bought it through Future Shop who are the worst bunch of crooks out there. They wouldn't fix the motherboard, even though it was faulty. Finally, they agreed to do the labor if I paid for the new motherboard., Fine. They even tried to rip me off on that by trying to charge me $250 Canadian as opposed to $200 like we originally agreed upon. Crooks.
The machine worked for another few months until more of the hardware stopped working. Once I had enough money for a new computer(not an E-machine), I took the E-Machine outside and smashed it on the ground. Then I took a big sledgehammer and smashed it into bits. Man that felt great.

Don't buy an E-Machine and don't buy from Future Shop. Future Shop will not honor any warranties whatsoever. Future Shop is also run by a bunch of crooks who do not want to give any refunds whatsoever as it will cut into their commission.

Don't by an E-Machine even though they look like a good deal. They are mostly refurbished cheap JUNK!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed with E-Machines
One major problem with this computer is that the memory it comes with (128MB) is not quite enough for it to run a graphics heavy operating system like Windows XP. I get very annoying Virtual Memory warnings often and am now looking to buy some more memory for the computer.

Also, after two months of ownership, the monitor has blown out. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it, but the whole situation has left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I have vowed to never purchase e-machines products again.

So if you're looking to buy an e-machines computer, more than likely you'll be adding more memory to it down the road. Also keep in mind that it does not come with a CD/DVD drive. In my opinion, you'd most likely be better off purchasing a different brand of computer, even if it is a bit more expensive.

5-0 out of 5 stars Too bad I didn't get this one when I had a chance!
A good friend of mine has this machine, and from what I got to see of it,it's pretty good. Has enough features to let the budjet-minded and first-timers get started! I wish I had gotten this one instead of the Linare, but if you look closely it is simular to this computer. Only thing missing is Windows XP.
Great machine!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Daily Internet and Email Machine
Perfect 2nd machine for 90% of my daily tasks, including word processing, surfing and e-mailing. This is a suprisingly powerful little computer that is well worth twice the price. The ethernet card makes it a snap to get up and running on DSL or cable, too. The only downside is that it doesn't come w/ a CD-RW. Scavenge one, or buy one on sale and swap it for the CD-R. ...20 minutes should have you burning downloads like a pro. ... It seems to be a well engineered, tight, stable and bullet-proof little computer that is ready to go right out of the box. The entire package is well thought out, user-friendly and nicely documented.

My other machine is a tricked-out P4 with all the bells and whistles that I use for heavy lifting. Sure is nice, but it cost more than 10x what the E-Machines cost! Seems like a waste to crank it up when the E-Machines machine can so capably do the job for most of my daily needs. Get one for yourself. Get one for a friend...

3-0 out of 5 stars Okay for the price but no CDRW or DVD
This computer is okay for the price, and it is a good choice for people looking for a fast *no frills* computer who don't need the most powerful machine on the market. However it lacks a lot of things I like in a computer (such as a CDRW or DVD drive) so I suggest spending just a little more and get the next model up (T1840) which has these things built in.

The good:
The 1.7GHz Celeron is not my first choice of CPUs, but it's fast enough and cheap. The main difference it and a standard P4 is that the Celeron has 1/4 of the L2 cache (which makes it run about 10-20% slower than a P4 running at the same speed). I would consider this plenty of CPU power for now, and since it supports SSE2 (special instructions that will be used by more and more software in the future) it has a decent usable life span ahead of it. It has built in Ethernet for home networking or connecting to a DSL or cable modem, and USB 2.0 for scanners, MP3 players, digital cameras, and a host of other devices.

Windows XP which is (I hate to admit this) a great operating system that rivals the ease of a Mac, on a computer a fast as a three thousand dollar PowerMac.

I find the 128MB of PC2100 (also known as 266MHz DDR Ram) to be adequate for most users but it's easy to add more later.

A 40GB hard disk is frankly more than you will need for quite a while unless you want to load a ton of games on it. I can't tell you how many friends I have with a new 100GB hard disks with 80GB free!

The bad:
No DVD or CDRW drive. I don't watch DVDs on my computer often, but once in a while a DVD will let you access special features over the internet. It's not a big deal it only adds a few dollars onto the price of a computer, so I don't know why the left it out. The CDRW adds about fifty bucks onto the price, but it lets you share your pictures or other data with friends and family easily. It's the new floppy drive.

Another weak point for this system is the graphics. The graphics are built into the motherboard, and there is no AGP slot to add a video card later. The graphics fine for most software and will run any game on the market now, but newer games may not run at their highest settings. For that reason you should not buy this system if you want to keep buying the latest 3D games.

To sum it up: I really suggest spending a little more on the next model up, but if you are sure you don't want a DVD or CDRW drive then this is a good choice. ... Read more
