Amazon Product Description

The Basics
Brandishing top level accoutrements, awesome power and all the connectivity you'll need for the hottest electronic gadgetry, the Sony VAIO VGC-RA828G Desktop PC is the brightest star in the entire Sony computer lineup and one of the most capable desktop PCs available. Designed to efficiently handle anything you can throw at it, the system is a superb hub for a business, personal, home office, entertainment or gaming environment. It even features an innovative liquid heat pipe cooling system to squelch excess heat and minimize noise, but that's just one of many impressive innovations you'll find in this stunning example of high-tech wizardry.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. The VAIO VGC-RA828G incorporates one of the fastest CPUs currently in existence, an Intel Pentium 4 560. New for 2004, this is an upgraded version -- nicknamed "Prescott" -- of the venerable Pentium 4 chip, featuring one full MB of Level 2 cache and a more generous data "pipeline" than prior models. Operating at an astounding 3.6 GHz and of course sporting Intel's Hyper-Threading technology (Hyper-Threading allows a single CPU system to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end applications), this pricey but ultra-potent CPU delivers more than enough power for any environment or situation.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. For the VAIO VGC-RA828G, Sony has installed a whopping 1024 MB (1 GB) of fast PC3200 400 MHz DDR SDRAM memory. This is a ton of memory even for a high-end machine, and its rated speed is comparatively quick. As such, it is easily sufficient for any multitasking situation or complex application. Moreover, the system's mainboard is constructed to support RAM upgrades to a whopping 2 GB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). A graphics controller with "dedicated" video memory is preferable to a controller that's integrated on the mainboard and "shares" the system's main memory, as it will better handle complex procedures.

One of the problems with many high-end PCs is that they simply aren't equipped with a graphics card on par with the rest of the system. Not so with the VAIO VGC-RA828G, which features an ATI Radeon X600 XT with 256 MB of video memory. Not only will this card efficiently operate all your 2D and 3D apps (including the vast majority of demanding 3D games), but it also includes a television tuner and a Giga Pocket MPEG2 Realtime Encoder/Decoder to pause, rewind and replay live TV. Furthermore, Sony will package the system with a handy remote control to make TV and movie viewing even easier.

Display:
Sony has not included a display screen, thus allowing you to continue using your current monitor or select from today's many alternatives.

Sound
The VAIO VGC-RA828G produces stereo and surround sound via an Intel High Definition Audio chipset that supports for five distinct audio channels and a dedicated subwoofer. Sony will also enclose a 2.1 speaker system featuring two desktop satellites for clean middle and high frequencies and a subwoofer for added bass support.

Hard Drive
With an incredible storage capacity of 400 GB, the unit's internal hard drive is one of the largest ever manufactured and double the size of the hard drives found in many high-end PCs. It is thusly roomy enough for a massive allotment of files and applications and a comprehensive music, video/photo and multimedia library too. Indeed, even the most avid collectors of digital data will have a tough time filling this hard drive. Furthermore, it's exceptionally quick -- sporting a fast 7200-RPM speed, an 8 MB buffer, and a futuristic Serial ATA connection. These are all comparatively recent innovations, each increasing the overall speed and performance of the system.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing world. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can enjoy all of the above plus watch the same big budget DVD movies you watch on your home entertainment system. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can also "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of CDs).

This unit features two optical drives -- a DVD-ROM drive for playing music and data CDs and DVD movies, and a DVD +/- RW Double Layer Multi-Format drive through which you can not only do everything above but also take advantage of new double layer DVDs (twice the capacity of traditional DVDs and capable of four hours of DVD-quality video). Moreover, this two-drive setup allows you to make extremely fast CD or DVD copies.

Connectivity and Expansion
With no less than seven high-speed USB 2.0 ports, you'll have lots of room for plug and play gadgets such as joysticks and printers. Sony has also installed two IEEE 1394 "FireWire" ports (often used for fast data transfer from digital camcorders), an S/PDIF jack for crystal clear digital audio, two S-Video inputs for lossless digital video, a DVI monitor port for the highest quality flat-panel display images, and a memory card reader for reading today's most popular memory cards from devices such as digital cameras, PDAs and more. Communication options include an integrated Gigabit Ethernet LAN interface for substantially faster network and Internet access than traditional 100Mbps and 10Mbps Ethernet, and a 56K data/fax modem for low-speed dial-up connections

Operating System and Software
The VAIO VGC-RA828G features a software package clearly aimed at fans of multimedia. Headed by Microsoft's Windows Media Center Edition 2005 operating system and Microsoft's Works 8.0 productivity pack, the bundle also features Adobe's Photoshop Elements 2.0 photo editing suite, Adobe's Premier Standard video editing solution, and a half dozen of Sony's respected audio, video and photo utilites.

Control
Apart from the aforementioned remote control, the system includes a convenient VAIO Keyboard and a no hassle PS/2 optical mouse. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

The Basics
An awesome roster of portable computers designed for those who won't accept anything less than the finest mobile performance, Toshiba's P25 series of Satellite notebooks will handle virtually any duty you might normally reserve for high-end desktop PCs. As powerful "desktop replacement" notebooks, they are somewhat bulkier and less battery efficient than today's new breed of ultra-lightweight notebooks. However, true power users will find the extra size a small price to pay for amenities such as high-end Pentium 4 processing, solid 3D graphic capabilities and massive 17-inch widescreen displays. This model, the Satellite P25-5263 Notebook PC, features all of the above plus DVD recording and a spacious 80 GB hard disk.

Processor
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, while others are quick enough only for basic duties such as word processing, email and the like. The Satellite P25-5263 lies firmly in the latter category, equipped with a blazing 3.2 GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor with Hyper-Threading. Hyper-Threading, a new Intel technology, allows a single CPU system (which most are) to behave at times as a dual CPU system, thus adding substantially more speed to some high-end tasks. Running at 3.2 GHz, this particular processor would be one of the fastest in any notebook, but it is nothing less than spectacular with its Hyper-Threading support.

Memory
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM) for faster retrieval. More RAM means more efficient computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite P25-5263 incorporates 512 MB of RAM, more than enough for most situations. Ultra-demanding users may want to expand their RAM, and with the Satellite P25-5263 they can, to a boggling maximum of 2048 MB.

Video
CPU's are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an nVidia GeForce FX Go5200 with 64 MB of dedicated video RAM. While a graphics card with 128 MB or more of video RAM is considered ideal for a completely smooth frame rate in state-of-the-art 3D games and 3D animation apps, this card is nevertheless comparatively powerful and more than enough for all but the most demanding gamers and 3D artisans.

Display
You'll love the way your DVD movies and 3D games look on the system's roomy 17-inch TFT WXGA display. Substantially larger than most notebook viewing screens, this display is especially notable for its widescreen format, the same panoramic configuration favored by movie-makers and some high-end game producers. And with a maximum resolution of 1440 by 900, you can expect super-sharp images no matter what application you're using.

Hard Disk
The Satellite P25-5263 features a massive 80 GB of hard disk space. This amount of data storage is a welcome perk indeed for those who want to operate a broad range of applications and also keep a large library of space-gobbling music and/or multimedia files.

Optical Drive
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination of all of these tasks. This system features a DVD-Super-Multi drive that supports all of the above in each of today's most common CD and DVD formats.

Audio
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound, and two harman-kardon speakers for powerful mobile stereo output.

Keyboard and Controls
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys, dedicated Windows keys support, and a TouchPad pointing device with scroll. CD controls include Play/Pause, Stop/Eject, Previous, and Skip/Next.

Connectivity and Expansion
The Satellite P25-5263 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an RJ-45 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated wireless LAN for cordless e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include four high-speed USB 2.0 ports for plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, an infrared port for interacting with wireless peripherals, an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders), and a digital (S-Video) TV-out port.

Operating System and Software
Toshiba has fitted the system with today's most widely accepted operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition.

Dimensions and Weight
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Satellite P25-5263 is definitely larger than average, yet more compact than many other "desktop replacements" at 16.4 by 11.5 by 1.8 inches and 9.9 lbs.

Power
The system is equipped with a 12-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery that delivers 1.5 hours between charges. This is not particularly efficient when compared with less capable ultra-portables using Intel's Centrino technology and Pentium M processor, but is in keeping with standard desktop replacement battery longevity. ... Amazon.com Product Description

Whether editing your family photos, balancing your online checkbook, or listening to your digital music collection, Compaq's SR1410NX offers a versatile, strong base for your home computing needs. Focusing on affordability, the SR1410NX has room to grow with an available expansion slot, 2 available PCI slots, 5 USB ports for connecting peripherals, and the ability to add up to 2 GB of RAM. This desktop comes with an 80 GB hard drive, 256 MB of installed RAM, 2.8 GHz Intel Celeron processor, combo DVD/CD-RW drive, and a multi-format memory card reader. For a step up in price, the SR1420NX offers a faster Celeron processor, 512 MB of RAM, and a dual layer DVD-/+RW drive.

The Basics

  • Hard Drive: The 80 GB hard drive (7200 RPM) is average in size when compared to other budget-minded desktop PCs. It will provide ample storage space for your family digital photos as well as a large digital audio library--but it's not quite enough for editing digital video from camcorders.
  • Processor: The Intel Celeron D 335 processor might not be as sexy as a Pentium, but it still gets your work done speedily enough. It has a 2.8 GHz speed with a decently fast 533 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and 256K L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance.)
  • Memory: The 256 MB of installed RAM will get you started, but you'll want to add more to handle any kind of multimedia application and most business productivity suites. This desktop has a 2 GB maximum RAM capacity.
  • CD/DVD Drive: This desktop includes a speedy combo DVD-ROM/CD-RW drive, with 48x write/read and 32x rewrite speed for CDs and 16x read speed for DVDs.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: The SR1410NX comes with a Compaq keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections.
Screen, Graphcs and Sound
The integrated Intel Extreme Graphics video/graphics card (with 64 MB of shared video memory) is adequate for streaming Internet video, but won't be enough for today's demanding immersive 3D games. It also features an integrated audio card and headhphone, microphone, and line-in jacks.

Connectivity and Expansion Slots
For expansion, the SR1410NX has two 5.25-inch external bays (one available), one external 3.5-inch bay (available) and one internal 3.5-inch bay (occupied), and three PCI slots (two available). It comes with a built-in floppy drive and the following external connectors:

  • 5 USB 2.0 ports (1 in front, 4 in rear) for connecting a wide range of peripherals--from digital cameras to MP3 players
  • 2 FireWire (also known as IEEE 1394 or i.Link) port for connecting digital video camcorders and other peripherals (1 in front, 1 in rear)
  • 1 parallel port for connecting older printers and scanners
  • 2 PS/2 ports for connecting keyboards and mice
  • 1 VGA monitor port
  • 9-in-1 media card reader on the front, compatible with CompactFlash (Type I and II), MicroDrive, SmartMedia, Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro, MultiMedia Card, Secure Digital, and XD Picture Card
It also has an integrated 56K modem (V.90) and an RJ-45 LAN network port (for a 10/100 Ethernet connection to networks and DSL/cable modems).

Preloaded System and Software
This system comes with the Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2 operating system with Advanced Security Technologies, which helps to reduce unwanted downloads and pop-ups while surfing the Web. It also comes preloaded with Microsoft Works (for working with word processing and spreadsheet documents), Norton Internet Security 2005 (with 60 days of complimentary updates), InterMute SpySubtract Pro (with 60 days of complimentary updates), Microsoft Money 2005, Quicken 2005 New User Edition, Sonic RecordNow, Apple iTunes, Adobe Photoshop Album Starter Edition, and MSN Encarta 2005.

Dimensions and Weight
This desktop measures 15.35 x 7.17 x 16.54 inches (HxWxD) and weighs approximately 30 pounds.

What's in the Box
The Presario SR1410NX desktop PC comes with a power cord, keyboard, and scroller mouse. It is backed by a one-year warranty for parts and labor from date of purchase, and it includes 90 days of toll-free software technical assistance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I use my laptop for better and better things everyday.
I can see a lot of criticism of Apple on this product page and it shocks me. I made the switch in college, running the top Apple computers against the top Dell computers and Apple was easier to use, and ran faster. Today, I use Dell in the office, and Apple at home. I also use Apple at work, the laptop on this page, and it is still easier to use, and runs faster than the very nice Dell which sits on my desk.

The iBook has plenty of power, has a great battery, and runs on my Windows network at work. It opens Windows files easily, and basically goes with me everywhere. It also does lots of things that it's windows counterpart cannot do, things that really matter--like not crashing. I haven't rebooted in months, and I use it daily. Everybody that sees how often and how easily I rely on my iBook is impressed. My iBook simply works and works, while my Dell finds new and innovative ways to slow me down each and every day. I only have one regret....I should have bought an iBook sooner.

4-0 out of 5 stars The jaguar of laptops for discerning users
I have had the Apple iBook 800MHz laptop for about 6 months and have yet to experience any technical difficulties.

If you're seeking a stable, reliable, high-performance, and visually appealing laptop, you should seriously consider the venerable Apple iBook. Though more expensive than today's P4 1.X laptop PCs, Mac OS X alone is enough to convert even the most diehard PC user. Though getting around the "unique" interface of the OS can take some getting used to, you will surely appreciate its stability and user-friendliness.

With upgraded memory, an AirPort card for wireless web surfing and Office:Mac, you will have everything you need to work or play with incredible performance for everyday tasks. Throw in the iLife suite of applications for DVD playback, music/MP3 management and much more, and you have an amazing productivity pack for multimedia, a longtime strength of Apple computers.

I would wholeheartedly recommend the iBook for those seeking a trusty companion for work, play, or multimedia. The 800MHz G3 processor has never been insufficient for any task I've thrown at it and the AirPort card makes an ideal accessory for connecting to the Internet without wires.

If you have $1400-2000 to spend on a laptop, don't overlook Apple.

Edit: My pre-owned iBook is now nearly 11 months old and has developed the rampant logic board failure, which has plagued many a user. Luckily, with about a month left in my 1-yr AppleCare warranty, I did not have to pay a cent and waited about a week and a half to get it back.

Please keep in mind that if you purchase a newer G3 iBook, you may very well be one of those who experiences a logic board failure, and apparently it can come back again and again. Buy the 3-yr AppleCare Protection Plan and you won't be sorry.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should work well...but doesn't.
I have used Mac's for a bout 4 years now and I quite like apple products for the most part (other than the usual complaints!). But I bought this ibook in Dec of 2002, and at this point I really wish I could get my money back. Maybe I just got a lemon, but it has already had to be sent back to apple once (took over a month to get back too!). After 2 months of heavy usage (I travel, and it's my only computer) the machine just died and would not start up. After much difficulty sending it off (and hours of stupid tech support walk throughs) they replaced the hard-drive and optical-drive. I don't really think it fixed the problem though. The machine gets very hot with extended use, and I am still having the same problems as I was before I had to send my machine off. Problems like slugish performance (that wasn't the case when i first got the machine, as it was very quick), programs crashing unexpectantly, modem errors, programs not performing correctly, etc. I am very afraid the hard-drive will just die on me again, so I neurotically back up my data every week. honestly I really think it has to do with the fact this machine gets so hot, but that is just my layman theory.
Basically I wish I had spent the extra cash and got a powerbook. Maybe that would have worked better.
I hope this reveiw helps you make a better buying decision. Maybe I just got a lemon, but I wouldn't buy an ibook ever again.

5-0 out of 5 stars The switch was worth it!
I love my new I-book. In addition to it's sleek appearance it offers everything my PC offered plus more. The picture is so crisp and clear, everyone at work mentioned it looked better than most of their television sets at home. The sound quality isn't the greatest, but isn't an I book all about portability. I bought some inexpensive headphones and the sound is now incredible. I couldn't be more pleased with my purchase. Buy an Ibook it's worth switching to!

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Laptop
Over the years I have used a wide variety of computers. Recently, I decided to purchase a top-of-the-line iBook (800mhz-40gb-Combo Drive-640mb ram) for personal and professional use. Apple has really done a great job on this laptop. Besides looking great, the iBook provides a first rate user experience. The operating system is ingenious and has yet to crash. I get about 5.5 hours of run time on it's lithium-ion battery. I use my ibook for every imaginable task, from running large graphics through photoshop to testing sites via it's apache server application. I even do some 3D work on it from time to time. I run Word, Power Pt. and Excel with no problems. If fact, it runs these programs better than on the dell I use. If I wish I can even run XP on the rascal via virtual PC. I tried to think of any downshots to buying the iBook, and I can't think of many. My only suggestion would be to get a higher end model and purchase the maximum amount of ram. Two minor increases in the price, but definately well worth it. A word about the one star review - they couldn't have possiblely purchased the same product I did. I hear about this PC/apple rivalry taking this form and that's unfortunate. I guess it's a case of the fox and the grapes. What one of the previous reviews said is true, pc laptops are underclocked to extend battery life and reduce heat buildup. The OS is another matter, XP is a country mile behind the macintosh operating system. If you were to spend time working in both OS(s) it would be clear. The aqua environment is easier to look at and interact with than the interface Windows provides. If you intend to spend any time in front of one of these things that fact alone is a big consideration. ... Read more

Amazon.com Product Description

Early Adopters Pick: December 2002. First true tablet-format PC supporting the Tablet PC operating system.

ViewSonic's Tablet PC V1100 may be a portable computing solution, but its similarity to a conventional notebook ends there. Unlike a notebook, the Tablet PC V1100 dispenses with a traditional keyboard in favor of a stylus-activated tablet that allows users to enter data and run applications via handwritten input. And, at just 9.9 by 11.3 by 1.1 inches and a mere 3.4 lbs., the unit is substantially less cumbersome than a conventional mobile computer.

When compared to other portable computers in its price range, the Tablet PC V1100 is not particularly powerful. The system is equipped with an 866 MHz Mobile Intel Pentium III processor, 256 MB SDRAM, and an embedded 4X AGP video chip, which certainly won't be enough horsepower to drive high-end games or graphic design packages. It is, however, suitable for most day-to-day notebook purposes and business applications.

In fact, the Tablet PC V1100 is best used to enter, store, and share notes, ideas, and concepts that might otherwise be kept in a paper format. Sporting solid handwriting recognition capabilities and useful software such as Microsoft's Office XP Pack and Windows XP Tablet PC edition, the featherweight Tablet PC V1100 instantly improves coworker collaboration, from airport to boardroom.

The unit features a surprisingly large 20 GB hard drive, a high-luminance XGA 10.4-inch TFT LCD viewing screen, and dual display orientations (portrait and landscape). With integrated support for wireless and wired networking, connectivity to the Internet, LANs, and e-mail is ensured under any circumstance. Other features include a PC Card slot, a 56K modem, two USB ports, and a single FireWire connection for outboard peripherals such as CD drives and digital cameras and camcorders. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome, Intuitive, and Indispensible
This thing ROCKS! I've had it 9 months and use it every day. It was easy to use right out of the box. The handwriting recognition is surprisingly accurate, the virtual notepad is incredibly useful, and the form factor is great. And it is robust. I've dropped it and carted everywhere without problems. (Onto carpet. But still.)

It's not good for high end games, but it runs turn-based strategy games. (Sims, CivIII.) I recommend an extra battery and a spare stylus for emergencies.

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome
I've experienced a demo of this very machine, and I must say that I'm impressed. I was skeptical, until I held it for myself. The handwriting function to create documents does take some getting used to, but a sneaky use of it is to put notes on standard documents for later review.

The best use at home is to remotely connect to my MP3s and MPEG videos across my wireless network. I do that with a laptop computer now, but the tablet form would be so much easier. ... Read more

Amazon Product Description

Sleekly styled and comfortably ergonomic, Sony's K Series notebooks offer affordable, all-purpose portability for home computing, home office needs, and students. The PCG-K33P balances your productivity and entertainment needs, with an integrated 54G wireless LAN to keep you connected inside and outside your home and a suite of preloaded Sony multimedia applications for managing your digital audio and photo collections. Other features include a 15.4-inch screen, 80 GB hard drive, 512 MB of installed RAM, and a Memory Stick slot.

The PCG-K35 features a 15.4-inch WXGA widescreen display that is perfectly tailored to the aspect ratio favored by DVD movies.

The Basics
  • Hard Drive: The 60 GB hard drive is becoming the average size for notebook PCs, and it's a good size for storing a decent sized digital audio library as well as an office productivity suite.
  • Processor: The 3.06 GHz Mobile Intel Pentium 4 is a powerful processor that was designed to be used with notebooks used as a desktop replacement PC. It includes Intel's Enhanced SpeedStep technology, which helps cut the power used by the chip and conserves battery power. It has a front-side bus (FSB) of 533 MHz and a 1 MB L2 cache.
  • Memory:The 512 MB of installed RAM (2 x 256 MB, PC2100, 266 MHz DDR SDRAM) has become standard with notebooks, and it's a good start. But you'll want to take advantage of the 1 GB expandability to get the most out of this computer.
  • CD/DVD Drive:The combo CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive can write and read and rewrite CDs at 24x speeds. It can read DVDs at 8x.
  • Keyboard & Mouse: This notebook has a standard 86-key keyboard with electrostatic touchpad.

Sound and Graphics
The included ATI Radeon IGP 345M video/graphics card provides competent, but not overpowering, 3D graphics. It features 64 MB of shared video memory. This is taken from the main system memory, so you'll want to increase your RAM from the installed 512 MB if you plan on doing much gaming or video work. The enhanced widescreen format function (1280 x 800 pixels) lets you watch DVDs in full cinema mode as well as easily view spreadsheets and Web browsers side-by-side. It also offers an integrated audio card, built-in speakers, A/V connection out, and the ability to drive an external monitor.

Dimensions and Weight
Measuring 1.6-2.2 x 14.1 x 10.9 inches (H x W x D) and weighing 8.2 pounds, the PCG-K33P is bit larger than other notebooks in its range. It's best used as a desktop replacement while offering portability when you need it.

Amazon.com Product Description

The Basics:
As the midlevel model in Toshiba's powerful, multimedia-friendly A75 roster of portable computers, the Satellite A75-S226 Notebook PC provides a good compromise between price and performance. Featuring a 15.4-inch widescreen display perfect for DVD viewing, an extremely potent Intel Pentium 4 processor and all the connectivity you'll need for the latest digital camcorders and cameras, the Satellite A75-S226 is a fast machine ready for most any remote or home application.

Processor:
At the heart of any computer lies the CPU (or processor), a massive collection of miniature transistors that governs the speed and power of the entire unit. Some of today's notebooks are equipped with high-end CPU's on par with those found in top-of-the-line desktop PCs, though these machines are usually noticeably larger and more power hungry than their less powerful counterparts. For the Satellite A75-S226, Toshiba has selected a super-fast 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 532. This CPU is part of the new second-generation of Intel's potent Pentium 4 series, offering improved power efficiency, extra "Level 2 cache" for quicker access to recently viewed data, and "Hyper-Threading" (a technology that allows a single-CPU system to behave at times like a two-CPU system). Running at 3.02 GHz, this is a very powerful CPU that'll handle virtually anything you can throw its way.

Memory:
Computers typically store information on their hard drive, but they keep frequently and recently accessed data in Random Access Memory (RAM). More RAM means faster computing, superior multitasking and less strain on your hard drive. The Satellite A75-S226 includes 512 MB of RAM, an allotment that's considered quite adequate even if you perform lots of multitasking. The system also allows you to expand to a whopping 1.5 GB of RAM, more than enough for any situation you'll ever come across.

Video:
CPUs are usually so busy doing basic calculations that they need help translating visual output to the viewing screen. This is the duty of the graphics card (or graphics controller). This system's graphics controller is an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 IGP with 128 MB of shared video memory. Though dedicated video memory would be ideal, the truth is that 128 MB is an impressive amount, even when shared. As such, the Satellite A75-S226 will smoothly and accurately display all 2D and most 3D applications. You may need to upgrade this video controller if you plan to operate super high-end games and 3D animation packages, but the system is otherwise a video powerhouse.

Display:
At 15.4 inches and featuring a widescreen format suitable for displaying DVD movies, the unit's WXGA TFT active matrix display is great for multimedia enthusiasts. The screen's highest supported resolution of 1280 by 800 is superior to the genre's average 1024 by 768, delivering crisp images and lots of fine detail.

Hard Disk:
The Satellite A75-S226 features a solid 60 GB of hard disk space. This is an average size for today's notebooks, offering enough room for general applications and files and a small library of music or multimedia files too.

Optical Drive:
An optical drive is essential in today's computing environment. A "CD-ROM" drive allows you to install CD-based applications and play music CDs. A "CD-RW" drive adds CD "burning", so you can also backup your important files to long-lasting discs and create personalized music CDs. With a DVD-ROM drive you can watch DVD movies. And with a DVD-RW drive, you can "write" home movies to durable discs and archive files to DVD (DVDs boast more than seven times the storage capacity of a CD). Some drives allow you to do a combination or all of these tasks. This particular system features an extremely versatile "SuperMulti" drive that supports that supports all of the above in every currently available CD or DVD format.

Audio:
The system features an integrated audio processor that mimics the spatial awareness of surround sound through its two stereo speakers.

Keyboard and Controls:
You'll control your notebook via an 85-key keyboard with 12 function keys and a TouchPad pointing device. CD control functions include play/pause, stop/eject, previous, and skip/next.

Connectivity and Expansion:
The Satellite A75-S226 offers a wide variety of ways to keep in touch, including a 56K modem for low-speed dial-up Internet and email access, an RJ-45 Ethernet port for high-speed wired network and Internet, and integrated wireless LAN for cordless e-communication at home, at the office or on the road via a local public hotspot. Other key amenities include three high-speed USB 2.0 ports for fast interaction with plug and play devices such as external drives and digital cameras, and an IEEE 1394 FireWire port (commonly used for quick data uploads from digital camcorders).

Operating System and Software:
Toshiba has fitted the system with today's most widely accepted operating system, Microsoft's Windows XP Home Edition.

Dimensions and Weight:
Notebook computers are manufactured in a wide variety of sizes and weights. Many of today's most powerful notebooks are also the largest, weighing ten or twelve lbs or more and therefore too big and cumbersome for extensive, continuous traveling. These are often referred to as "desktop replacements". On the other extreme are "thin and lights" or "ultra-portables", super-miniaturized units that typically aren't as powerful as their larger brethren but weigh as little as two lbs and will often fit comfortably inside a large purse. The Satellite A75-S206 is considered quite slim by today's standards, at just 1.1 inches thick. Otherwise, it is of average size at 14.4 by 10.8 inches and 7.7 lbs.

Power:
The system is equipped with a 12-cell Lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery. Though you won't experience the long battery life of today's ultra-light notebooks (often powered by super-efficient but less powerful Intel "Pentium M" processors), the Satellite A75-S226 will deliver in excess of 2 hours between charges, an impressive duration considering its level of power. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Does what its supposed to do
I bought the zd8060 2 months ago and havent had ANY problems whatsoever with the build quality. This thing IS a beast though. It has a P4 so it runs too hot to actually have it on your lap and only lasts 1.5 hrs on the battery. Its got a beautiful screen and a nice number pad on the right. The mouse pad is a little sketchy at times (cursor just goes wherever it feels like going) but the great thing about that is there's a button right above it so you can disable it (also, the space on the right of the mouse is big enough to use a usb mouse on).

For someone who's actually considering buying this thing, its great for people in a dorm room (limited space) or in the military and goes TDY and will set it up in a room and leave it for weeks or months. For someone who travels a lot or in my case just lazy (I hate dragging it from room to room with the monster power cable) and wont EVER use the Media Center/TV tuner functions it comes with, its an absolute waste. If you want something that wont be moved at all get a desktop, its less than half the price.

I give it 4 stars because it is a good computer. The price for the logic (limited mobility laptop) and the fact that after 2 months, I went ahead and ordered an IBM thats half the weight, 4x the battery life and doesnt create enough heat to cook my lap are why it doesnt get 5 stars.

Pros:nice bright screen, latest XP media center Operating system, number pad, ports and card readers for just about everything, good speakers.

Cons:It's a BEAST to carry around, heat, battery consumption, sketchy mouse, lack of bluetooth, price.

3-0 out of 5 stars Keyboard
I have a 16-month old HP-Pavilion ZE55..US laptop (pentium chip, 512MB ram) that I'm sending back for the second time because of problems with the keyboard. In the first incident, the "P"-key popped loose. This time, "R"-key has popped loose while the "N" and "M"-keys have become illegible.
